She works in the legal department of a large radiology company. She asked a member of her staff to contact an attorney who was requesting some medical records. The staff member said, “She (the attorney) is such a pain. Do I really have to call her? I’ll just send her an email.” “No, you need to call her,” my friend said. “We need to get in touch with her right away; track her down.” “She’s so difficult,” he said. The advancement in technology is staggering. But it’s not just in HTM. Think about the banking industry. In today’s world of ATMs, online banking, auto bill pay, direct deposits, mobile deposits, etc., I very rarely have to go in to the bank anymore. But I did the other day. My other cousins and I were trying to figure out what we could do to help the grieving family. There were 5 of us. Coming from an old school Italian family, there were those who wanted to send the big flower spray to the wake, others thought that was a waste. I suggested a compromise, “Let’s send something beautiful to the wake, but also, let’s send some food to the house so while they are making the arrangements, there would be something to nourish them without having to think about it.” Agreed, and, “Abbe, can you take care of it for us?” So off I went to make the arrangements. That can present a whole set of unique problems when your buddy is now your boss. Alternatively, someone can be brought in from the outside and then we may experience the feeling of, “Who does this guy think he is. In my experience, those words usually follow some underlying situation where there have been strong differences of [...] The post Karen Waninger: Make it Personal first appeared on TechNation.]]> /karen-waninger-make-personal/feed/ 0 Karen Waninger: What Are You Doing With That? /karen-waninger-what-are-you-doing-with-that/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=karen-waninger-what-are-you-doing-with-that /karen-waninger-what-are-you-doing-with-that/#respond Mon, 01 Aug 2016 11:35:41 +0000 A few weeks ago, the entire HTM team at one of our sites was displaced due to construction (destruction?) activities in preparation for a new hospital which will open on that site in 2018. My team was challenged to condense everyone and everything into an area less than half the size of our original space. I do appreciate the concept of the game, where there is a requirement for the combination of knowledge, skill and strategy, and a little luck is always beneficial. Who Cares … /karen-waninger-quality-who-cares/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=karen-waninger-quality-who-cares /karen-waninger-quality-who-cares/#respond Tue, 01 Dec 2015 14:00:47 +0000 Everything related to the delivery of health care in the United States is supposed to be guided by regulations and standards that are designed to assure high-quality outcomes for the patients, right? It’s a noble concept. Every manufacturer of health care devices or products, every health care organization, every provider’s office, and every service organization I have encountered during more than 20 years in this profession claims to be concerned about quality. From my observations and experiences, it appears that others are more likely to ignore, question or even challenge the decisions of someone who appears less than certain of his or her own course of action. Do not doubt your ability to be a contributing member of your team. Instead, take a serious look at what you can do to influence how others perceive you. The HTM profession is full of people who are analytical, maybe even cynical, and looking for anything they can question to begin with. Don’t give them any added ammunition for making you the target, especially if you are in, or aspiring to move to, a management role. I have also come to realize the value of lessons learned through life experiences. After completing any step along the formal education path, there is always the challenge of being able to retain and effectively apply what was learned. That same concept holds true with the lasting impact from life experiences. I reviewed my scribbles, then put the tablet back down, thinking to myself that “it just doesn’t matter.” There it was, my topic had revealed itself. Whether in government, business, or individual relationships, that word seems to somehow be tied to an image of success. Some pieces of some movies stick in my head more than others. The first time I heard the theme song to “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” it stuck.
