An annual bike donation drive aims to keep the generosity rolling for a third year, but some help is needed to make it happen.
Since the start of the pandemic, Forest Lawn resident Gar Gar has been spearheading an annual bike giveaway for kids in need.
Through three years and four drives, he and other volunteers with YYC Kids Ride have fixed up and redistributed hundreds of gently used bicycles.
“Applications come from all over Calgary,” said Gar. “They’re usually from low-income families. People are having to choose between paying the bills and putting the food on the table.”
He said people in those tight financial positions don’t always have the money to provide their kids with bikes, and that’s where YYC Kids Ride aims to step in and help.

Gar said bike donations have steadily increased since the program started in 2020, but so have applications from families in need.
This season, he said they have about 260 kids on the waiting list for a bike. Gar said more applications were coming in but they had to cap the requests for now to ensure they can meet demand for the June 4 deadline.
So far, 140 cycles are tuned up and ready to go, but they’re looking for technicians who can help fix up an additional 188 (and counting) bikes that could need some minor adjustments before they’re ready to be back on the road.
He said while more bicycle donations are welcomed, what they really need is more people to help tune up the donated bikes they have.
Gar said the bikes are stored at the Forest Lawn Community Association. Kids Ride YYC could make arrangements on any day of the week to go in and do tune-ups.
“It’s just a joy of the kids being able to enjoy this weather and enjoy the opportunity to enjoy a bike,” he said. “Hopefully this will give them the opportunity to have that freedom of just riding a bike.”

]]>Last week, I asked for ideas about interpreting the data from the city’s first publicly reported bicycle counter, set up last year on the Peace Bridge over the Bow River entering downtown, the results of which are now being posted daily to this website .
I received a number of insightful ideas, which I will post below, and one unexpected reply. Into my inbox popped a message from Jean-Francois Rheault, the director of Eco-Counter, the company that built and installed the bicycle counter. We later chatted by phone, and he offered some fascinating insight. I put to him many of the questions readers had asked, a well as a few of my own. Here’s what he had to say:
Many of you were wondering about the technical side of the bike counter: Does this thing actually work? According to Rheault, it certainly does.
The counter is a wire loop embedded in the asphalt at one end of the Peace Bridge (look for the diamonds on the ground). The loop creates a magnetic field. Each interruption of that field by a metal object is counted. Over the years, the company has honed the device to ascertain bikes from other objects, and tests the company has done (which involve comparing manual counts to those tallied by the device) show it to be between 97 and 99 per cent accurate (Calgary’s counter has been confirmed with manual counts). It doesn’t matter what kind of bike — even if the bike has a carbon or aluminum frame — the magnetic field is disrupted by the metal wheels. It can even count those rare bicycles with carbon wheels, albeit not as accurately. But, frankly, if you are riding on a bike with carbon wheels on a shared pathway, you may want to re-examine your priorities in light of the looming recession.
The counter works just as well when covered with snow, although Rheault said the risk is if a patch of ice or snow builds up on the space over the counter, prompting people to ride around it. The solution to that is for the city to plow the space well.
As far as the number of people on bikes using the bridge, Rheault has been watching the data, just like the rest of us, and he did have some insight gathered from the company’s counters in other cities — Eco-Counter has some 10,000 counters of different types installed in 40 countries, he said.
For one thing, Rheault said it takes some time for new infrastructure to become part of the habit of users. Normally, there’s an initial jump in users when a new piece of infrastructure opens, as existing users adjust their patterns to take in the new route (a new bike lane in Vancouver, for example, found an increase in cyclists of about three per cent right away). But the real jump comes after about two years, when people finally start to adjust their lifestyle in response (similar findings have also been found elsewhere. I wrote about them here ).
What does that mean for the Peace Bridge? Considering it opened in 2012, we’ve probably already seen that secondary jump. But we’ll be able to confirm that as more time passes and more data accumulates.
As far as the raw numbers goes, Rheault thinks they are falling in line with what he sees in other cities. He has, however, been surprised by a few things. For one, the peak number of users is pretty high. The highest day of use, in Canada Day, saw 3,465 bicycle trips (remember, “trip” counts are used to count traffic of all types, which doesn’t necessarily correspond to number of people. The same person could be measured entering and leaving downtown. This is generally how counts of cars and pedestrians are also done). That’s a pretty good number, Rheault says. His company has found that the two busiest spots for bikes in North America are usually the Hawthorne Bridge in Portland and Maisonneuve Boulevard in Montreal. Peak days on both streets see 8,000 to 9,000 bicycle trips. So to see Calgary’s peak in that context — consider Portland and Montreal are often called the most bike-friendly cities in North America — is quite strong. “Already having multiple days over 2,000 is pretty good in a Canadian context,” Rheault said.
And what about winter numbers? Staring at the data, it’s obvious the number of cyclists in the winter months crashes. That’s to be expected. But how much of a crash are we seeing in Calgary? Well, consider this: Rheault says in Montreal, the number of cyclists in winter tends to be about 10 per cent of the summer number. In Ottawa, that number is 20 per cent.
How is Calgary doing? Roughly, the average number of summer cyclists seems to be about 2,000. The winter number is about 500. That’s 25 per cent. That high number surprised even Rheault. His theory is that winter cycling numbers in Montreal are suppressed for two reasons: snow clearing is sporadic and unpredictable (Montreal infamously uses some of its bike lanes to store snow removed from roads). Also, Montreal’s huge number of summer cyclists is more made up of casual, everyday riders, who may be less likely to brave the elements in winter. Rheault thinks Ottawa is made up more of hardcore commuters willing to ride through any weather.
So if he’s right, Calgary’s strong winter numbers may be attributable to the city’s increasingly strong snow clearing efforts, and the makeup of bicycle commuters here. That’s the theory.
Lastly, my conversation with Rheault was filled with caveats. He kept cautioning that the best way to interpret commuter data such as this is over time, and with less than a year of results tabulated so far it’s much too early to draw too many conclusions. He also said it’s important to consider other pieces of data, such as the annual cordon count, in which flesh-and-blood people tally the number of cars, bikes and pedestrians entering downtown from all points. As cycling infrastructure develops, expect more counters of this type to supplement existing data, although Rheault said most cities simply can’t afford to measure every entry point or road.
But this is a good start, as Rheault pointed out. “The main thing with the numbers is it’s really great the city is collecting them because it will remove the emotion from the debate,” he said. “Quantifying is important.”
There you have it. Here are a few more things to consider that I’ve been thinking about in response to your ideas and my conversation Rheault.
We might also want to consider that the 10th Street bridge is not far from the Peace Bridge, and is actually better connected to commuter infrastructure thanks to the pedestrian overpass crossing Memorial Drive. That will have an impact on the Peace Bridge’s numbers. (Note: Several readers have pointed out that cyclists are required to walk their bike across the 10th Street bridge, although that rule is often ignored).
The Peace Bridge is one of nearly 20 entry points into downtown, so it’s probably a good idea to heed the advice that we view this as but one piece of data, not the complete picture.
And as the new downtown cycle track opens this summer for a one-year trial period, remember what Rheault said about new infrastructure, that it generally takes two years for commuters to adjust their habits. Rheault said there is useful data to collect in a one-year trial, but that two-year period is something to keep in mind.

It’s a nifty little gadget, embedded into the pavement and capable of counting passing bicycling. But for a little piece of machinery, Calgary’s first automated and publicly reported bicycle counter sure carries a lot of expectation.
The counter is important, not only because the city’s political debates over cycling numbers has become a sometimes absurd sideshow in recent months, but because it’s seen as a way of answering one of the big questions about urban cycling: Potential. How many people will ride a bike if taxpayer money is spent making it easier for them? Everybody seems to want this answer, and this bike counter is being looked at as some kind of crystal ball for the question. (Want another stand-in crystal ball? It’s called experience. Look at what’s happened in other cities. But I digress).
So you can understand why this bike counter is important, and the fact that it’s data is being posted publicly — it’s updated daily on this website — is a big step forward. I can hear you applauding. Me too. Cycling data is always important — a lack of data, especially about winter, has long plagued bicycling planning in North America, and it’s heartening to see it changing. This is a great move.
But here’s the thing: After a week of staring at the numbers from this bicycle counter, here’s my big revelation: I have no freaking idea what to make of these numbers. Is an average weekday count of 1,346 cyclist a lot, or a little? Is 369 bikes on a bitterly cold January day enough to justify more expenditures on bike infrastructure? Is this a heavily used bridge or a slow one? Are cyclist numbers increasing or not?
Beats me. As of yet, there’s no time, nor depth to these numbers. There’s little context. All we know at this point is that fewer people ride in winter, and fewer people ride on weekends (well, duh). So this is a start, and a good one.
I’ve been asking some experts for their thoughts on these early numbers, but I’d like to hear your thoughts too. What do you make of these numbers so far? Surprised by anything? What do you think we should take from this data? Where should we go in the future?

Most kitchens are strictly used for cooking, but one Calgary woman has converted her cookery into a space where she can spend her days oiling chains, changing tires and scrubbing rust off old bikes.
Stephanie Katelnikoff, 27, isn’t a bike fanatic — she’s just someone who wants to help. For the second year running, Katelnikoff has purchased used bikes she can fix up and donate to Calgary kids who can’t afford wheels of their own.
“I don’t have a garage, so my kitchen is now a bike repair shop,” she said with a laugh.
“Growing up, bikes were such a big part of my childhood and I think they should be a big part of everybody’s childhood. I found a lot of families were struggling, and I wanted to brighten up their spring.”
Katelnikoff started the bike giveback project last year when some extra money came her way, so she splurged. Heading to the closest Canadian Tire, Katelnikoff bought 20 brand-new bikes and gave them away to kids in the community.
A little strapped for cash herself this year, Katelnikoff sold her trailer so she could keep the project going and purchase used bikes she could fix up and donate.
With 40 recipients already pedalling off on their new set of wheels, Katelnikoff still has 20 bikes in her “shop” she’s busy polishing up.
“Even with the 60 bikes I’ve purchased and been given, it doesn’t even meet a fraction of the need that’s been demonstrated,” she said. “There’s a huge need for bikes in the city. I’ll do this all year if people have bikes to give away.”

]]>If you pop by a nondescript office at the University of Calgary, you can become part of the city’s newest bike-share program.
It’s a modest affair — eight bikes are available to be borrowed for two or seven days at a time — but organizers have bigger long-term plans (more on this later).
Perhaps more importantly, the scheme is a sign that after a half-decade of breakneck growth all over the world, the idea of what constitutes a bike-share system continues to evolve.
While the idea of an organized program to share bicycles for short-term use has been around for decades, it was Montreal’s famous Bixi program, which kicked off in 2009, that popularized the idea in North America. Today, there are more than 700 cities around the world that have some kind of bike-share program. Rare these days are the cities of note that don’t have some kind of formal city-wide bike-share program, such as the cities of the Canadian prairies.
Yet the idea is still so new that it continues to change. Here are a few things to update your thinking about bike shares.
They don’t pay for themselves: After the high-profile financial problems of Bixi, the company that runs Montreal’s program, many critics wrote off the entire idea of bike-share programs as financially untenable. That has proved to be a mistake. The incident, while widely misunderstood (the financial problems had nothing to do with the popularity or use of the system), did mark some changes in the basic approach to such systems.
Since Montreal tax money revived Bixi, most cities, with a few notable exceptions, have given up the illusion that civic bike-share programs can be funded exclusively by private money. Nearly all systems these days function, like public transit, with a mix of public money, user fees and private money, usually from advertisers buying the rights to plaster the bikes.
This isn’t a sign that bike-sharing systems aren’t popular. In fact, the opposite is often true, which creates its own problems — in New York, for example, citizens loved the bikes so much there weren’t enough left for tourists, who are charged higher rates.
Despite such realizations, however, most cities have found money to keep them running because they have decided they are a public good worth supporting. Some are organized by governments, others by contract companies, while others, such as in Minneapolis, are run by non-profits funded by a combination of public money, private donations and user fees.
Either way, cities are finding ways of making such systems work.
They are becoming integral parts of civic transportation systems: Rather than tourist attractions, as some early proponents saw them, bike-sharing systems have become crucial parts of urban transportation.
In some cities, bike-sharing has become an especially key part of the so-called last-mile of commuting. That means suburbanites are completing their commutes on bike-share machines after using transit to get close to work. Some cities are noticing this trend and improving bike-storage facilities at suburban transit hubs, enabling farther-flung commuters to ride their own bike from home to a transit stop, then take the train into the city, and use the bike-share system to complete the journey to work.
Bike-sharing is safe. Like really safe: A new study has found that, despite initial fears that peppering cities with a bunch of amateur cyclists riding unfamiliar machines would be a recipe for disaster, bike-sharing is surprisingly safe. How safe? So far, not one person has been killed in the U.S. riding a bike share, despite millions of trips and a high percentage of inexperienced riders pedalling without helmets.
There are several r easons for that great safety record. The bikes tend to be slow, sturdy and easy to ride. Most trips take place in dense areas with slow-moving traffic. Yes, accidents happen, but the death rate of people using bike-shares is much lower than that of typical cyclists.
Competition is breeding new ideas: Several companies are now building bike-sharing systems, and each is slightly different. The most well-known is the Bixi-inspired system in which bikes are held in docking stations sprinkled throughout the city. CycleHop took over Ottawa’s bike-share system in the wake of Bixi’s financial problems, and its smart bikes rely on GPS as well as docking stations. After years of fits and starts, Vancouver is now planning on rolling out a CycleHop system as well, although the system will may be bedeviled by the province’s law requiring helmets.
Even some private companies are stepping into the game. Spinlister is a bike-sharing company that relies completely on users, in a system similar to Uber or, perhaps more accurately, Airbnb. Bike owners list their bikes on the Spinlister app, and other app users sign up to rent the bike. The app is great for rentals longer than a single ride, and some cities already have dozens of users.
There are also smaller bike-sharing operations kicking off. Some companies are offering bikes for employees, and big U.S. employers are leaving bikes throughout their employment campuses for use by workers.
Which is where the U of C program comes in: Meagan Windle, a volunteer with the U of C’s bike-share system, said the idea of a campus bike-share program began as a class project in sustainability, but came into being when the students realized its potential on campus. A grant from the Students Union enable the purchase of eight bikes, locks and helmets, and volunteers are now running the system.
“It’s so expensive to drive, so we think it will work really well for international students and grad students,” she said. “It’s sort of a no-brainer.”
A $10 annual membership fee gives students the right to rent bikes for two or seven days at a time. A partnership with the campus community bike shop the Bike Root will keep the bikes in good shape. It’s all housed in The Sustainability Resource Centre in Science B.
A university campus full of young, active students without much money to spend on transportation may be the perfect market for a bike-share system.
The bigger question now is whether governments in those few cities that don’t have them will see enough value in them to pay for them.

What’s the perfect winter bike?
That’s the question I’m most often asked by people interested in riding in winter, and it’s also the question I most often dodge. There is no easy answer because everybody’s city, winter and route is so different. My short answer is that you don’t need a special bike. Just give it a try.
That, however, isn’t satisfying for some people, so I built the flow chart below. I hope it helps.

]]>Minneapolis often ranks high on those moderately scientific lists of most bike-friendly cities in North America, and after a few days exploring the city by bike I can certainly see how it earns its spot. I had a blast cycling in the city, even in the middle of a snowstorm.
So, in my short and sporadic tradition of stealing the best cycling ideas from the cities I visit and presenting them for your consideration (such as this from Finland , this from Montreal , this from the Netherlands and this from Copenhagen and friends) , here are some of the things I’ve learned at this year’s Winter Cycling Congress (where I was both speaker and journalist) in Minneapolis.
Winter doesn’t have to stop you
I entered the city into a civic sense of dread this week. A big dump of snow was predicted and, as seems to happen in all winter cities, TV weather forecasters used the opportunity to lose control over their own hyperbole. Rural schools were closed. Warnings were issued. I couldn’t help but feel a little wary.
But when the snow came down in big, beautiful Midwestern flakes, the bikes kept coming. The plows were out on the bike routes, sometimes several times through the day, and bikes continued to stream through the city. Granted, I was attending a conference about winter cycling full of hundreds of people who get off on this kind of thing, but I was impressed how many regular people — especially students — just took the snowstorm in stride amid the overblown reactions elsewhere. Helping them was, of course, the city’s strong bike infrastructure and its committed winter maintenance regime.
The next morning, I spend hours riding around the city. By then, about 20 centimetres of snow had come down, and was already turning to slush, but it didn’t stop my group. There were, of course, some dodgy areas (for all its great off-street bike pathways, Minneapolis is light on separated on-street bike paths, so sharing road space with cars and snow was the same type of challenge as most other cities), but the bike paths were navigable, easy and — dare I say it — fun. A bike is a great way to see a city, even when chasing the beauty of winter.
Minneapolis’s spot on those best-of bike lists is one piece of evidence that you don’t need a California climate to build a bike-friendly city. For me, riding through the city that morning was proof.
Get creative
One of the projects that put Minneapolis on the cycling map, and made a huge difference in the lives of the city’s commuters, was the the Midtown Greenway . Basically, it’s a rail trail — it was originally a trenched route for freight trains serving warehouses and industrial buildings along the route. As the route fell into disuse by the railroad, forward thinking civic leaders recognized the land’s potential for a pathway.
Today, the old train tracks have been removed and replaced with pathways for both cyclists and pedestrians (there are long-term plans for an LRT or streetcar to share the route, but nothing concrete yet). While the pathway is only about 10 kilometres long, it has created a crucial east-west route for leg-powered commuters crossing the city, offers links to big adjacent employment centres, and has strong connections to the city’s impressive pathway network. In other words, it’s a nice, efficient, dedicated and safe route for people on bikes to get where they need to go.
Beyond that, it’s also pretty cool. On a February day, it felt a bit magical riding over plowed snow beneath a series of overpasses for the roads passing above. Safely tucked away from cars, the greenway it made me realize nearly every Minneapolis residents I met gushed about it.
What I took from it was importance of having the vision to see such a project within what was a derelict and easily overlooked part of the city. City politicians often dig in their heels over proposals to add cycling to streets, so being creative with other options can be key. I know of at least one city’s metro core ( *cough* Calgary *cough* ) that is severed by a historic freight train route. Seeing something beyond what exists today can transform the future.
Help out the cyclists
It’s not often you can see a shower as anything more than a place to get clean, but one shower spot in Minneapolis just might exist as a symbol
Located smack in the middle of the Midtown Greenway, the bike centre is a hybrid of a number of ideas: bike shop, mechanic, bike storage space, bike rental spot, community gathering place, coffee shop and, yes, a shower facility. On one level, it’s simply a practical place for members to stop on their commutes to safely store their bike, clean up for work and perhaps pick up a few bike parts for the ride home.
On another level, however the bike centre is a sign that Minneapolis takes its bicyclists seriously. The centre was built with some federal grant money and keeps the doors opening by operating a for-profit bike shop, but its primary purpose is simply to make life a little easier for those who want to ride their bikes. For that purpose, the shop is not only useful in a practical way, it’s a useful philosophy as well.
Bike culture
Plenty of cycling advocates say the ultimate goal of urban cycling is to eliminate the idea of a “bike culture,” based on the idea that cycling should become as practical and ubiquitous as any other form of transportation. Until then, however, Minneapolis helps prove how much “bike culture” can further that goal.
The city excels at celebrating the bike as a machine and a lifestyle. Bike events run year-round in the form of rides, races and festivals. People show up at events looking like this.

This boosts the presence of the bicycle in both the city’s transportation hierarchy and in the minds of the people who live and move through the city. In all those respects, the city seems to benefit.
Fat bike city
Few cities seem to have embraced the fat bike as wholly as Minneapolis. Sales of the monster-truck bikes have taken off in the last half-decade all over the place, but mostly to recreationalists who love hitting snowy weekend trails. In Minneapolis, fat bikes seem to have become a real urban transportation vehicles. I saw all kinds of fat bikes, and all kinds of people on them, rolling through streets and bike paths all over the city.
Fat bikes are certainly not required for anyone’s bike commute, but if you’re facing an unleashing of snowfall like the city encountered this week, they sure do come in handy. And as good as Minneapolis is for bikes, every North American city is a long way from having the infrastructure in place to rival those few European cities where safe, easy bike rides are available to almost anyone on any kind of bike. Until then, when facing a winter ride full of snow and ice and cold, Minneapolis proves that fat bikes can be a practical daily option.

]]>After months as refugees on the run from the war in Syria, and after completing the long trip to Canada, it didn’t take the six children of the Al Saeid family long to spot something to excite them: a bike helmet. “Where’s the bike?” the kids kept asking, through a translator.
That sent one of their Canadian sponsors named Lori Beattie off on a mission. Lori Beattie, a Calgary author and advocate of walking and cycling (and, full disclosure, a friend of this blog with whom I have shared occasional speaking engagements), is now on the hunt for six bikes for the Al Saeid children.
Beattie has worked for months with a group that sponsored the family’s entry to Canada as refugees. Working with about 10 friends and neighbours volunteering their time, and up to 40 others donating money and ideas, Beattie and friends greeted the Al Saeid family — mom, dad and six children between ages five and 14 — at the Calgary airport Sunday night for their arrival.
Beattie says thanks to the group’s efforts and Canada’s refugee system, the family has the basics covered. When she heard the kids asking about bikes only a few hours after their arrival, however, she made it her mission to find them.

Beattie said she’d love to see the initiative kick off a bigger program to get bicycles in the hands of all refugees coming to Calgary.

]]>Seeing as how we are stuck in the midst of the twin daylight-demons of winter and standard time, it’s important for cyclists to stay illuminated.
Let’s not get carried away on this — there’s no need to paint yourself phosphorescent, or wear a reflective sash to highlight your status an inferior road user (mutual respect and good city planning will do a lot more) — but staying well lit is never a bad idea. Even in bicycle havens like the Netherlands, there are high-profile public education campaigns encouraging cyclists to use lights.
Thankfully, this has gotten easier in the past decade because bike lights have gotten whole lot better, brighter and cheaper, thanks mostly to the ubiquity of LEDs.
Yet, without standards, choosing the right kind of lights, and how to arrange them on your bike, is an individual decision. I’m reminded of this whenever I pass a cyclist who seems to have strapped on a blinking locomotive headlight and directed it to inflict maximal corneal damage in passersby.
Even the seemingly simple question of whether a light should be solid or blinking recently sparked a days-long Twitter debate. Here’s the result of a poll I conducted, which only hints at the underlying passions.

Before this poll, I was solidly in the solid-light camp, based mostly on how annoying I find it to pass a blinking light.
But some good points were made against this idea, particularly the idea that blinking lights are more conspicuous to motorists. And after spending days debating lumens, wattages and beam shapes, I felt myself more confused than ever.
There’s precious little data on this question, save an oft-cited report into snowplows . The report attempted to get the bottom of why most collisions involving snowplows were rear-endings, despite a barrage of both solid and blinking red lights on the back of most plows. The report found that, while blinking lights may make the plow easier to see, they also make it difficult for motorists to judge the distance and movement of the plow. In the end, the report found “a steady-burning light bar resulted in the highest ratings of visibility and of confidence for passing.”
Case closed? Not so much. Bikes aren’t plows, and other reports have found that it’s difficult for motorists to judge distance and movement when their only point of reference is a single light, which is the configuration on most bikes.
So after a cooling down period, I’ve tried to boil the debate down to a few key points. Here are the ways, and reasons, that I’ll be lighting myself up this winter season.
Two solid white lights on the front. Two solid red lights on the back. Most of the time.
Here’s why:
On the front, white lights are key because that’s what motorists expect to see. Having two solid lights gives motorists a better frame of reference for judging their distance from me and my movement (an interpretation of the report on snowplows), and gives me enough illumination to pedal through areas without street lights. I’m avoiding blinking lights out of respect for fellow cyclists who may be blinded when we cross paths. For that reason, I also vow to direct the light downward onto the road in front of me, rather than into the eyeballs of others.
On the back, I’m going with two solid reds for the same reasons cited above. However, I will turn one of those lights to blinking mode if I feel an extra need for conspicuity, such as on roads with heavy traffic where the presence of bikes would be unexpected.
I won’t use a head-mounted light in the city. I will use a headlight only if I’m trail riding at night and need an extra boost of illumination.
If you’re looking for information on wattage, or lumens or beam shape, that debate is still raging. I’m going for the brightest rechargeable light at the most reasonable price, provided it provides enough light for me to feel confortable. If a future bike includes a hub dynamo (which generates electricity through the movement of a wheel) to power those lights, I certainly won’t complain, but I’m not going to install one on an existing bikes. Batteries will do just fine.
But that’s just me, If you have more to offer to these suggestions, please let me know. We all benefit when we can all be seen.

]]>Before the crash, Jim Fraser was a committed winter cyclist. He enjoyed the challenge. “I liked it when I checked the bike lockup (at work) and I could say ‘Yes! I’m the only guy who rode today.’ ”
The crash stopped that, at least temporarily. Broken ankles can do that. He hasn’t quite gotten back on the bike in winter yet, although he plans to. The crash, however, may have led to something bigger than his commute.
Fraser is central district manager of roads maintenance for the City of Calgary. He’s in charge of ensuring downtown roads are free of snow. A year ago, that rather thankless job (have you ever known anybody to praise snow clearing?) was, more or less, straightforward.
But the installation of the downtown cycle-track network this summer changed that. Now, instead of those tried-and-mostly-true methods of salting and sanding and plowing and dealing with withering complaints, Fraser and his team had to figure out how to keep these new bike lanes accessible to people using a vehicle that is more vulnerable in winter than a car or truck.
Thankfully, for cyclists if not for Fraser, the task fell to a guy whose ankle knows first-hand the potential dangers of winter.
In person, Fraser is a sturdy matter-of-fact guy who seems passionate about the intricacies of plowing, something most of us take for granted. When presented with the job of keeping the cycle tracks free of snow, he talks as if he relished the challenge.
The city’s first cycle track on 7th Street S.W. opened in 2013, two years before the wider network. Fraser admits keeping it clear of snow was, well, a learning experience. The city hired a contractor in 2013 that did the job well (so well it was criticized in a perverse bit of logic by those who felt more attention was being paid to the bike lane than the road), but it cost a small fortune — about $200,000 for the first year. One of Fraser’s missions over the wider network was to reduce that cost.
So far, that seems to be working. Fraser says the city has ditched the contractors in favour of doing it in-house, and the costs have been brought down. Much of the savings comes from having the same work crews clear the bike lanes and the adjacent road at the same time. In many cases, they are able to use the same equipment. He estimates clearing that same bit of bike lane on 7th Street S.W. last year cost between $16,000 and $20,000.
“They’re out there anyway, so the additional time to do the tracks isn’t as big,” Fraser told me. “It’s a more efficient use of the crew and of equipment.”
The two-way cycle tracks are wide enough for traditional sweepers and plows to access. There’s a buffer space between the bike lane and the road that can hold snow that’s been pushed aside. In some cases, the city removes snow from streets and bike lanes after plows push it into what perhaps only Fraser refers to as “beautiful” windrows.
For narrower one-way bike lanes, the city purchased a nifty piece of equipment from Finland called a Wille . It’s small enough to get where it counts, and also takes a number of attachments in the style of a Swiss Army Plow, so to speak, that enable it to be used for all sorts of other jobs.
Since the first snowfall of the season, Fraser has been experimenting. Before snowfalls, his crews have been laying down a brine mixture, which keeps salt in place better than dry salt mixes. The trick, which he admits his crews haven’t always gotten right, is using the right amount. Not enough renders the exercise useless. Too much leaves roads whitened with salt, which can wreak havoc on bike components (and yes, he sympathizes with those who worry about the impact of salt on both the environment and their precious bike drivetrains, but he knows of no better option. Salt isn’t great, goes the rationale, but it’s better than ice).
I’ve ridden the cycle tracks through the winter so far, and I’ve been mostly impressed with how well Fraser’s team has been doing. It hasn’t been perfect, but it’s a world better than trying to ride between moving traffic and a gutter-lane full of of slush like downtown riding once was. In fact, on the snowiest days, I’ve gone out of my way to use the cycle tracks because riding in them is so much easier than cycling a typical road.
The biggest problem so far, Fraser acknowledges, is the way snow from sidewalks tends to get shovelled into the bike lane. After Fraser’s crews do their work, it’s not uncommon to see a private sidewalk contractor pushing snow into the lane, leaving the cycle track striped with patches of snow. That can get dangerous.
Fraser says he’s noticed the problem too, and the city is trying to educate building owners and private snow-clearing companies about the importance of keeping snow out of the bike lane. The solution, he says, is for people to push the snow to the edge of the sidewalk, where city crews will later pick it up.
“We’re going out and educating (building owners) because it does create liability for both of us,” Fraser says. “The message has been sent, but I think it will take a little time.”
Perhaps things are getting better. During a ride in late December, I was stopped in the 12th Avenue S.W. bike lane by what looked like a private company worker driving a machine with a brush that was pushing the snow from the sidewalk into the cycle track. When I stopped to take a photo, the worker steered into the bike lane and cleared what he had deposited there. Whether that was because my camera shamed him into doing the right thing, or because that was simply part of his snow-clearing process I’ll never know, but I’m going to assume Fraser’s message is getting out and it was the latter.
Either way, Fraser says his team is learning as it goes. They pay attention to feedback from the public that comes in to 311 and through social media, and he says they are always looking at improving.
As for his own riding, Fraser says his ankle has been feeling good and he plans to get back on his bike as soon as he can. When he does, for his sake and ours, let’s hope his path is clear.

]]>Apparently, there’s urban planner within all of us.
Earlier this week, I launched an experiment asking readers to redesign Calgary’s 20th Street S.W . into a more complete street that works for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. We used the rather enjoyable online tool Streetmix.net , which is kind of like Minecraft for city nerds.
The results are in, and colour me impressed. There have been some really innovative, thoughtful responses, including submissions from professional urban planners (but I won’t tell you who they are to keep the playing field level). Now the real fun begins. We get to choose which one we like the best.
Here’s how it will work. Below, I’ve pasted your creations (if I missed yours, I’m very sorry. Please drop me an email and I will add it). Check them out, decide which one you think would work best (check out my previous post for the criteria), and then vote using the poll at the bottom.

1. Jenna Peters
A classic new street design that expands the corridor to enable the maintenance of parking and sidewalks on both sides of the road while also adding painted bike lanes, and more space for street furniture and landscaping.
2. Meika West
Nobody will accuse Mieka of being unambitious with her plan, dropping two-way car traffic in favour of a separated bike lane, a central pedestrian corridor and even a streetcar.
3. Rioj Jacob Thomas
Rioj’s redesign does away with street parking in favour of a bike lane on one side, a shared bike-bus lane on the other, and expanded sidewalks.
4. David Zhao
Some clever ideas from David. He did away with parking and segregated bike lanes with a barrier that can accommodate transit shelters. Plus, he plans to keep car traffic moving efficiently by utilizing a centre turn lane.
5. James Liswed
James replaced straight parking lanes with the opportunity for parklets, which are little on-street public spaces that transform parking areas into things like patios and relaxations spaces. He also expanded the pedestrian area, and put at two-way painted bike lane on the opposite side of the street.
6. Donna Dempsey
Donna kept street parking on one side of the street, and accommodated bikes by including a sharrow (shared lane) on one side, and a segregated bike lane on the other. Plus, expanded sidewalks can accommodate more bike parking.
7. Brendan Seymour
Brendan expanded the space and squeezed the parking lanes to make room for all users, and to slow car traffic: Good-sized sidewalks with space for trees and other street furniture, segregated bike lanes on both sides, all while managing to maintain parking lanes and two driving lanes.
8. Peter Dormaar
Peter implemented a few ideas to reduce the speed of cars, including narrowing lanes and including a median, with trees all around that also offers shade for parked cars. That left room for segregated bikes lanes and good-sized sidewalks. He also noted those parking lanes will become turning lanes at intersections, and the centre tree area can also be used for snow, so it isn’t plowed onto the bike lanes.
9. Kyle Olsen
Kyle has a number of interesting ideas. He would rebuild the street to keep a two-way cycle track off on one side, while keeping parking on both sides of the driving lanes, and add a centre turning lane to keep traffic moving.

Kyle also submitted this rather more ambitious plan, that eliminates parking (for more function and less congestion, he says), and adds LRT lines down the street.
11. Christopher Doyle
Christopher resisted the urge to put aspirational palm trees in his design, and instead settled on a plan that removes parking in favour of bike lanes segregated by planters, and a much expanded pedestrian area.
12. Jordan Vine
Jordan managed to find room for all users, with wide sidewalks, painted bike lanes, all while maintaining two narrower parking and two driving lanes, separated by a small, treed median, all of which can help bring down the speed of traffic.
13. Jackson Wiebe
Jackson says he was inspired by Dutch cycle paths with his design that incorporates the same vehicle accommodation that exists now, but adds bike paths separated by trees or curbs. He also says key to this design is the use of “protected intersections,” like this .
Elisabeth Hoffmans
Elizabeth said she didn’t want to work with Streetmix, so I won’t include her in the voting. But she would like to see more trees, bushes and flowers, more “scramble” intersections that allows pedestrians to cross all directions at once (there’s one near Eau Claire downtown), more roundabouts, and more bike lanes — “I would love them to be a part of every major street,” she wrote.

]]>A new report shows how differently Canadian cities have accommodated cyclists over the years, and how each city is facing its own challenges in making improvements.
The report, Cycling Cities: Supporting Cycling in Canadian Cities , put together by Canadian environmental agency the Pembina Institute, looked at several factors that go into urban cycling in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa. While the report stops short of drawing conclusions about which cities are doing the best, or which type of infrastructure is most effective, it does show differences in how the cities have accommodated cyclists.
The report finds, for example, that Montreal — widely considered the most bike-friendly city in the country — leads the way in separated bike lanes and its famous Bixi bike-share system, but still struggles to connect bike lanes because of jurisdictional differences among its borough governments.
Calgary, by contrast, leads the way in total bicycle infrastructure thanks to its extensive network of off-street multi-use pathways, but still has the smallest number of on-street bicycle lanes.
Nithya Vijayakumar, one of the authors of the report, says the compiled data shows that Canadian cities are starting to take cycling seriously, with investments that are paying off by drawing more people on bikes.
“In general, we can see that just making the investment in cycling infrastructure is working,” Vijayakumar said. “I think it’s very important to make the investments.”
Vijayakumar did, however, warn against comparing cities because of jurisdictional differences and limitations on the available data. The number of cyclists cited in each city, for example, is from the 2011 census, which is before major investments were made in bike infrastructure in several cities, including Calgary’s downtown cycle-track network. Comparing cities, such as Vancouver and Calgary, is also troublesome, for example, because Vancouver’s data is focused on a small, dense metropolitan jurisdiction while Calgary’s includes its vast low-density suburban network.
Still, Vijayakumar says there’s value in looking at each city to see what’s working.
“There are a lot of factors that go into making a good cycling city,” she said. “(Montreal has) a culture of people always cycling, and … that tends to attract more cyclists. But Montreal doesn’t have the most cohesive (infrastructure) system.
“Vancouver has a dense population in downtown and also has a dense cycling network. But most of their routes are on-street routes on residential streets (where) they’ve also done a lot of traffic calming and lowered speeds.”
The report looks at other factors that make cities friendlier to cycling, including crash rates, distances between bike paths and transit stations and the number of bicycle shops.
Vijayakumar says all of these aspects go into making communities better for cyclists.
“It’s really about finding the right fit for the environment,” she said.
Update: Some questions about the methodology of this report have been raised, particularly by Velo Quebec’s Bartek Komorowski. While my read of the report didn’t find problems with Calgary’s data to the same extent (except its reliance on census data from 2011 that predates Calgary’s recent strides in bike infrastructure), it is worth keeping in mind the concerns raised by Komorowski.

]]>You’ve had 140 years to complain about Calgary roads. Now, let’s conduct a little experiment to fix those roads.
City planners are in the midst of a redesign of 20th Street S.W . There’s nothing particularly special about that street. It’s the kind of neighbourhood street moderately busy with cars that you can see all over the city. Like many roads of its ilk, too many people speed down it, which worries neighbours. There are many parked cars along the street, but it’s almost never full. There are a not-insignificant number of cyclists who use it, but there’s no infrastructure to support them, so they feel uneasy and often illegally ride the sidewalk. There are plenty of pedestrians too, but they don’t like crossing the street because of the speeding cars, especially when they have kids. There’s a well-used bus route on the street. So, yeah, a common Calgary street.
But that’s also what makes it perfect for this experiment. This street could exist pretty much anywhere in Calgary.
Here’s the task: Redesign 20th Street S.W. to better accommodate all users. We’ll use an online tool called Streetmix.net , which lets you easily redesign streets using drag-and-drop tools.
Here are the ground rules
- Redesign it anyway you want (add bike lanes, bus lanes, a streetcar, benches, a monorail, or leave it alone — anything), but remember the road is used in significant numbers by people in cars, on bikes, and on foot, and runs through a mostly residential neighbourhood.
- Keep your budget in check or you’ll be savaged by angry taxpayers.
- The width of the route must stay at 20 metres maximum.
- The goal of the redesign is to keep car traffic orderly and efficient, lower traffic speeds, and better accommodate cyclists and pedestrians.
Here’s what to do
- Visit Streetmix.net, and make your street look like the one above (use the specs below the image), which is an approximation of 20th Street S.W. currently (You can also see it here).
- Use the Streetmix tools to redesign the street to meet the goals stated above.
- Click the Share button in the top right, and send me your creation (Tweet me, or Email me).
- Voila. I’ll share all the creations I get, and we can then go about shamelessly judging each other’s creations.
The caveats
Yes, I know this is a blunt tool that doesn’t exactly represent the street. And there is plenty of more nuance to the real-life street, and it isn’t uniform throughout its entirety. And this tool doesn’t accommodate intersections, which are a big part of any street. But this is an experiment. Let’s see what happens.

]]>Forget that gran fondo you were contemplating, here’s a new kind of bicycle adventure you will be able to unself-consciously brag about to your friends: A guided trip across Antarctica to the south pole.
TDA Global Cycling , the Canadian company that made the pan-continental Tour D’Afrique the bucket-list trip for every adventure-seeking cyclist in the world, has just announced what it’s calling the The Last Degree , a group fat-bike trip from the 89th parallel to the south pole.

The 10-day trip will include the trip to the continent, and just over 100 kilometres of riding over ice and snow toward the pole. The distance on the bike isn’t huge, but the harsh conditions and logistics make it undoubtedly one of the most thrilling and challenging rides you can imagine.
“We’re really trying to find people who find this idea really captures their imagination,” said Shanny Hill, of TDA. “It’s sort of like the people who are attracted to Everest.”
It won’t be the first fat-bike trip to the pole — a handful of people have already completed the trip, including BBC TV host Helen Skelton back in 2012 — but this trip is being marketed as the first guided group tour. If you’ve ever nerded out on South Pole history (guilty as charged), you’d be forgiven for wondering if the trip that killed Scott and nearly did in Shackelton 100 years ago might be, well, a tad dangerous.
Hill says the company feels the risk is manageable. They plans to use Antarctica’s foremost logistics company to help carry out the trip, including the possibility of a rescue if necessary, and there are few companies in the world that regularly undertake epic, and sometimes dangerous, cycling trips with the gusto of TDA.
“We’d be fools to do it on our own, so we aren’t,” he said. “We feel this is something we can do.”
Still, the trip isn’t for any weekend warrior. Hill says you don’t need to be a world-class athlete, but you need the right attitude, and perhaps a little grit against the cold. And just in case you’re not sure if you’ve got the mettle, the company is planning a test, by taking interested customers out onto the ice of Lake Winnipeg in February for a week of frigid cycling.
Oh, and you’d better bring your chequebook. Hill says the cost for the Antarctica trip will likely be in the $70,000 US range.

]]>Idaho, famous for potatoes and summering beach-deprived Calgarians, is in the news for something different: a 30-year-old traffic statute that is suddenly most-talked about new idea in urban transportation.
In the early 1980s, concerned that trivial traffic matters were cluttering the courts, a magistrate judge in Idaho changed the rules to allow cyclists to treat stop signs as yields. Rather than forcing people on bikes to come to a full stop at each red octagon, cyclists were allowed to slow and roll through them when safe.
For the next 30 years, Idahoans went yielding on their own merry way without drawing much attention, other than from cycling advocates elsewhere who looked on with envy. In the last few months, however, the “Idaho stop law” has suddenly become a talking point. Both Montreal and San Francisco are considering adopting similar rules, and a subsequent debate has ensued.
It’s easy to understand the appeal of this law to cyclists. Stop signs, to be frank, suck. They are hard work. Coming to a full stop and then pedalling back up to full acceleration is a huge expenditure of energy ( this study , pointed out to me by Kay Teschke , found that regular stop signs require so much energy they can drop a cyclist’s speed by 40 per cent). This is especially galling on a bike when there’s good visibility and the stop sign is in an inconvenient location, such as the bottom of a hill, there’s no risk to rolling through, and the sign was clearly intended for motor vehicles. And, let’s face it, the risk posed by a bike in such a situation is much less than a car.
Yet adoption of the law has been pretty much non-existent outside of Idaho. As more cities look to make life easier for cyclists, however, the law is getting a second look. There is, however, some opposition, mostly from car drivers resentful of some perceived advantage being given to people on bikes. Everybody, they say, should obey the same rules.
With that in mind, I called Kurt Holzer to see how the law works in the real world of Idaho. Holzer lives in Boise, is a personal injury attorney who often represents cyclists, and he rides his bike a lot, so he knows of which he speaks. His assessment of the law was simple.
“In my 20 years, I’ve never see a case where the stop-as-yield law has caused a problem,” he told me. As a lawyer, he likes that it “eliminated a bunch of tickets and unnecessary confrontations with police.” As a cyclist, he loves the little boost that comes with rolling through stop signs when safe to do so.
He’s not the only one. For most Idahoans, t he law has become a non-issue . In fact, Holzer says it works so well, he’s surprised it hasn’t been more widely adopted.
A study was done on the law in 2010. Researcher Jason Meggs at UC Berkeley found that bicycle injuries declined 14.5 per cent the year after the law was adopted. He also found Idaho cities fared 30.4 per cent better in bicycle safety than similar cities that lacked the law. “The law has been beneficial or had no negative effect,” he wrote. Another sign of the law’s efficacy is its rather low-key success in Idaho over 30 years.
Still, those arguments against the law persist. Holzer dismisses the standard oppositions to the law as “weak arguments.” As for the idea that cyclists would be given preferential treatment, Holzer points out that some road users already have different laws. Some jurisdictions, for example, require school buses to stop at railway crossings, or require big trucks to obey different speed limits than other vehicles. The same approach can apply to cyclists.
Others have argued against the law on the basis of protecting pedestrian rights , but Holzer also likes the law because it better reflects reality. Yes, that means the law acknowledges that some cyclists already roll through stop signs.
“It’s a rational statute that acknowledges vehicle and human behaviour, and enhances, rather than dismisses, safety on the road,” he said. “And for (vehicle drivers), I can get out of your dang way faster and not pose an obstacle to you because it allows me to . . . clear the intersection more quickly.”
The key point in this debate is probably this: The law works in Idaho when people obey it. There are still altercations at intersections, and sometimes cyclists blow through stop signs without yielding, but they are breaking the law. Every problem situation Holzer has seen is because somebody disobeyed the statute. People on bikes are still required to stop for safety. The law is not an excuse to ride like a jerk.
In the long run, however, the law remains appealing because it makes life just a little bit easier for law-abiding cyclists. With so many cities striving to do just that, it may be an Idahoan idea whose time has come.

In some places, cyclocross is all about the mud. Not just regular mud. Belgian mud. Trench mud. The kind that hits you with a thud, then clings on and weighs you down. Mud that seizes your bicycle’s drivetrain and refuses to surrender it, that builds up around your tires until they look as if they’ve been animated by a slapstick cartoonist. The kind of mud you remove from your shorts by the wet fistful hours after the race.
That mud is what everybody remembers when they watch a cyclocross race in Belgium, where the sport began and where it remains a mainstay. Elsewhere, cyclocross races lack that distinctive mud, but have maintained the sport’s other defining element: its spirit. The costumes, excessive quantities of Belgian beer and back-slapping obscenities, occasionally shouted in Flemish, may explain why cyclocross is the fastest-growing part of the bike-racing world.
The spirit, if not the esthetics, of cyclocross has made the trip to Calgary. Here, parks administrators tend to reject applications for bike races that promise to turn well-manicured lawns into seething mudholes, so ‘cross racers latch on to other parts of the sport’s essence. The elevator pitch for a cyclocross race is simple (“an off-road circuit obstacle course for bikes”), which leaves it wide-open for creative race directors. Last week’s Dark Knight Race at Canada Olympic Park, for example, featured no mud, but amateur racers had to ride over logs and flames as well as through a smoke-filled tunnel.
Bike racing can be an insular world. Road racing is driven by tactics indecipherable to noobs. Racing mountain bikes requires a touch of masochism. But cyclocross is accessible both in terms of skill and heart. If you can pedal and carry your bike on your shoulder, you’re in. The races are run on short circuits, so you won’t get left hours behind no matter how slow you are. The sport is so new to most North Americans, it still lacks the self-appointed elite cabal that tends to lord over most amateur sports. Its spirit ensures it remains mostly unserious. Heckling is encouraged.
Tutus on grown men are common. Liver damage is inflicted. It’s the kind of sport that draws guys like Mark McConnell, a Calgarian who is currently making his way up the world racing circuit as the only racer bankrolled by DIY sales of T-shirts featuring a likeness of his lavish Guy Fawkes moustache and his nickname, Hot Sauce.
While racing among Europe’s elite is beyond the imaginations of most Calgary ‘cross riders, that doesn’t mean they don’t have aspirations. Those post-race beers, after all, aren’t going to drink themselves. And someday, perhaps, they will experience the ultimate the sport has to offer and emerge from a race splattered with wet, cold, beautiful, mud.
]]>I was riding my bike down one of Calgary’s many sharrows the other day, on a bridge only a couple of hundred metres long, when something happened. I was passed by a car. Then a truck. Then another car, a truck, a car, and another car. Five vehicles passed me on the bridge. Why does this matter? Because I probably shouldn’t have been passed by any of them.
Let’s back up a bit first. A sharrow is a type of road designation indicating routes to be shared by people on bikes and in cars. The word is a portmanteau combining the words “shared” and “right of way” (or “row”), or “shared” and “arrow.” Here’s the symbol that indicates a road is a sharrow.
Sharrows were once the stars of North American bicycling infrastructure. Once cities finally clued in that encouraging cycling was a good idea, these things were slapped down on all kinds of roads in all kinds of cities. City planners happily had them painted, and then sat back congratulating themselves on how bike-friendly they’d become.
But here’s the thing: They don’t really do anything. Since they offer no real protection for cyclists, they have very little to encourage cycling. Many cyclists further hate them because they sometimes encourage cyclists to ride in the dreaded door-zone alongside parked cars. In fact, one Canadian study found that sharrows in some cases actually make roads more dangerous for people on bikes.
Part of the problem is a bigger one based on the idea of shared roads. Nobody, it seems, agrees on what the phrase “share the roads” should mean. Both motorists and cyclists seem to equate the phrase with the idea that they are entitled to hog the road and everybody else should yield to them. Some cities have already dropped signs labelled “share the road” completely.
A recent U.S. study seemed to put a final bullet in the idea. The study found share the road signage “did not increase comprehension or perceptions of safety,” and that sharrows were comprehended only slightly better. The study recommends such signage be replaced by the more simple signs that says “Bicycles May Use Full Lane.”
Sharrows, however, seem to live on, usually in places where there’s a need for some kind of bike infrastructure, but it’s too difficult, logistically or politically, to put in something that actually helps cyclists. In Calgary, they are currently under consideration as part of a plan to add bike lanes on 20th Street S.W . (to be fair, no design has been settled on yet, and sharrows are only proposed in a small area). Some cycling advocates still support sharrows, based on the idea that they are better than nothing, and they can work as wayfinding markers.
But their problems seem typified by my recent sharrow experience. What made that situation unique wasn’t that I was passed by vehicles — that happens on sharrows all the time, and is perfectly legal — but that this sharrow was accompanied by this sign:
Such a sign means I probably shouldn’t have been passed at all. But there I was, being overcome by five vehicles in a space of only a couple hundred metres. I guess that goes to show that creating good infrastructure that works for everyone is sometimes about more than signs and paint.

Here’s something you don’t see every day in most Canadian cities.
Yep, that’s a surfboard being pulled by a bicycle. I spotted that rig during a recent trip to Tofino, B.C., a magical little town on the west coast of Vancouver Island, and Canada’s top surfing location (granted, that’s not a long list). If you get a chance, you should go. (Roast a s’more and drink a 650 ML bottle of Tofino Brewing Company Spruce Tree Ale over a sunset beach fire. Trust me.).
One thing that jumped out at me while in the area was the types of bicycles that were being ridden everywhere. In most B.C. tourist towns, and in most burghs in western Canada for that matter, the default ride is a mountain bike. In, say, Fernie, B.C. or Canmore, Alberta, you can’t flick a Frisbee without hitting a beautiful $4,500 dual suspension carbon-fibre mountain bike just aching to hit the regions’ life-alteringly awesome single-track trails.
Even in Calgary, since the mountain bike boom of the 1980s, the default ride has been the mountain bike. With so many great trails in the region, it’s easy to see why somebody would pick a mountain bike when scoping a new ride, even if most of the never make it out to Moose Mountain.
So I was surprised at the lack of mountain bikes in Tofino. What was more common were rides like this.
I soon found out why. In chatting with Alan Churchill of Tofino Bike Co ., I learned the area is devoid of any mountain bike trails. Like, none. Well, there’s one, but it’s a rogue downhill bomb that is so dangerous he wouldn’t even tell me where it was. Churchill is trying to change that. He’s helped organize a series of stakeholder meetings and a Facebook group to get some trails built. Everyone thinks that’s a great idea — the area is ripe for some prime trails — but building trails is tough bit of organization and manpower (just ask any member of the hardworking mountain-bike groups in your area).
But the mountain-bike vaccum has opened up opportunities for a different kind of bike. Everywhere I looked, I saw simple, comfortable, practical rides. “The culture of bikes right now is single-speed cruisers,” Churchill told me. “Everybody rides them, lots of them with surfboard racks.”
Here’s what he means: a single-speed cruiser with a homemade surfboard rack built out of PVC piping, and the world’s most popular rear carrier: the classic milk crate (the handlebar banana peel is also a nice touch).
Most of the bikes I noticed were cheap, simple and practical, chosen not for recreational potential, but for their practicality. Such bikes make perfect sense for the region.
It was nice to see such practicality. For too long, utility has been an afterthought in bicycle purchases. Many of us use and enjoy specialized bicycles — mountain bikes for trails, road bikes for long country highways — but such models usually aren’t great for everyday city riding. They tend to be expensive, overbuilt, targets for thieves, saddled with too many gears and unnecessary features and, worst of all, finicky. Nothing is more discouraging to city riding than a bike that requires a derailleur adjustment when you are in a hurry to meet friends at the pub.
So if Tofino taught me anything about bikes, it’s that places develop and change their own style of (for lack of a better term) bike culture. That’s why we’re seeing a change in the urban areas of Calgary, as the new downtown cycle tracks prompt more people to choose practical city bikes over the old default choice. They may not be sexy, but they will get you to the pub on time.
There’s still a place for speciality recreation bikes, of course, but I’d expect to see more such utility rides as Calgarians adapt to the city’s changing bicycle environment. Even if they lack carriers for surfboards.

]]>Sean Carter has a grim outlook on the rising number of bike thefts in Calgary.
More than 700 bikes have been reported stolen in the city between January and May 2015, and the owner of cycling shop BikeBike says he doesn’t expect those numbers to go down.
“It’s happening all the time,” said Carter. “It’s gone off the hook and where we saw it start was at the flood time a few years ago. After the floods, it’s been pretty amazing the number of stolen bikes we’re hearing about.”
Police statistics show that downtown, the Beltline, Killarney/Glengarry and Bridgeland Riverside are the most commonly targeted by thieves. In all but one of those neighbourhoods — the Beltline — the number of bike thefts have increased since last year.
Those statistics don’t surprise Carter. With the higher density population in those communities and an increasing number of Calgarians using their bikes to commute in and out of downtown, stealing bikes from near the centre of the city just “makes sense” for thieves, he said.
“Every day you’ve got this swarm of people that roll downtown, so if you’re a thief, why would you bother rolling around a neighbourhood on the off chance that a garage door is unlocked or there’s a bike in a backyard?” Carter said.
It’s an outlook echoed by Sgt. Katrina O’Reilly.
“There’s no perfect lock out there and there’s tons of mechanisms to break those things,” she said. “You need to have better deterrents. I wouldn’t lock your bike up outside, especially if it’s a high-end bike. Keep your bike secured inside locked compounds or your home.”
“It’s a theft of opportunity,” she added.
Calgary police are working to curb the thefts by setting up operations in areas where repeat thefts have occurred, O’Reilly explained. Recently, officers worked with the owner of a parkade that had been the site of repeated thefts to install hidden cameras and added signage, in the hopes of deterring or catching thieves.
The force has no plans to introduce a bike bait program, citing a low rate of success, and Carter said he hopes police step up in other ways to combat the rising numbers.
He offered a number of tips to help prevent the thefts – buying a high quality bike lock, using more than one lock, parking the bike in a busy location and storing it inside when possible — but cautioned that it’s difficult to completely prevent a determined individual from taking a bike.
“You can buy the most expensive lock on the market, and if a thief wants your bike, the thief is going to get it.”

]]>When I pulled the bicycle up to my home for the first time, a neighbour happened by. A very fit and committed road cyclist, he stopped and watched for a moment before he said it, in a voice packed with disdain: “That’s not yours, is it?”
No, I didn’t own the bike. But while I was riding the Cube, I did begin to own the comments that came along with it. From other cyclists mostly, the comments were a mix of skepticism and snobbery. And if I’m honest with myself, I shared those feelings at first.
The Cube, you see, is an e-bike, built with an electric motor. Along with that boost of power comes with some cultural baggage, especially from people who take pride in their ability to pedal. An electric motor is cheating. It’s logging kilometres without the effort. It’s for lazy people, seniors and smokers with early-stage emphysema. At least that’s the sentiment that greets e-bikes from certain quarters. And yes, I was in that quarter.
But anyone who follows the development of cycling, especially in cities, will have noticed an ever-expanding chorus of people trumpeting e-bikes as machines of the future. Bikes with motors have been around for generations, but have largely remained on the fringes mostly because of technological limitations. As those limitations have fallen away, however, e-bikes are being seen as an easier way for suburbanites with long commutes to finally ride bikes to work. In Europe, the chorus in support of e-bikes has risen as cities look to get more people on bikes beyond those living in inner cities with short trips for their daily needs. And if European suburbanites see their advantages, there are millions more North Americans with long commutes waiting in the wings.
So when the fine folks at Bow Cycle offered me a trial of one of their new Cube brand pedal assist e-bikes, I suppressed my skepticism and agreed to give it a try (I wasn’t the only one skeptical. While chatting with a worker at Bow Cycle, he said some staff members half-jokingly threatened to quit if the store ever started selling e-bikes).
The first thing I noticed about the Cube was how even its appearance defied my expectations. Dump from your mind those images of a moped, or those loud gas-powered DIY bikes you sometimes see belching their way down the pathway. The Cube is a slick, German-engineered machine that doesn’t work the way you might think.
For one thing, it’s a pedal-assist model, so it doesn’t include a motor that you switch on and off. The Bosch motor is built into the crankset, powered by a rechargeable battery that is fastened to the back rack and controlled by buttons built into a screen on the handlebars. Here’s how it works: You choose from four settings, from a low assist mode that basically compensates for the motor’s extra weight, to an extreme mode that offers the most assistance. From there, you simply pedal away, shifting gears using a rear derailleur like any other bike. At low speeds, or perhaps more accurately at low effort, the motor does nothing. But when your legs encounter some work, the motor kicks in, quietly taking some of the burden from your pedalling.
The first time the motor kicked in, I almost giggled in delight. On a flat stretch, the motor helped get me up to full speed easily and quickly, and held me there with less effort that I usually need. It’s when I encountered hills, however, that the utility of the pedal-assist motor really shined. I steered toward the 10th Street N.W. hill coming out of Kensington toward SAIT to test the bike, and was dazzled by the results. In kicking the motor setting up to its highest, I powered up the hill at nearly full speed barely breaking a sweat.
It’s a slick, well-built system that feels good because I always felt in control of the bike. To ease up on the motor, I simply stopped pedalling. I still got the benefits of a good bike ride because pedalling is still required, but I never felt the motor had taken over. Despite my initial skepticism, riding the Cube was a blast, and I was reluctant to give it back.
Other than being fun to ride, however, I was struggling to see myself riding one on a regular basis. Two of the things I like best about bikes is the exercise they give me, and their mechanical simplicity, two things the Cube does away with. But when my mother expressed some interest in the bike, saying it would help her keep up with other riders, I started to rethink that position.
One one of my last days with the bike, another neighbour happened by, this time an older gentleman I had never met before. He asked about the Cube (it does draw attention) and said he’s been considering one because he’s lost a step over the years from age and a nagging injury, and the pedal assist would help take the edge off on the hills and the longer days.
Even though pedal-assists are marketed to everyone (there’s a cadre of mountain bikers who love the hardtail and full-suspension models because they power up hills), it began to dawn on me that e-bikes can be a great equalizer. The Cube can help level the playing field for people with long or hilly commutes, who are aging and struggle to keep up on group rides, with health problems that limit their ability to ride, and even couples who want to ride together but one is weaker than the other.
So for me, someone who is lucky enough to still ride a plain-old pedal bike, an e-bike probably isn’t in a requirement right now. But it’s nice to know the Cube is out there should the need ever arise, for me or any of my neighbours.

]]>Five years, ago, A small group of Calgarians who love bikes kicked off a bicycle festival. But there was a twist. They decided not to organize the event themselves. Rather, they would serve as facilitators, and threw out an invitation to anybody who wanted to stage any kind of event on their own.
The result was Cyclepalooza , a wild and woolly festival that contained unique bike rides, gatherings and wacky events that were sometimes only loosely connected to bikes.
Despite, or perhaps because of, its freewheeling approach, the idea worked. Sometimes organizers got more than they bargained for, such as the controversy last year over the so-called Crowbomb , in which a group of riders blasted down Crowchild Trail during rush hour, something they were legally permitted to do but probably shouldn’t have. Still, the festival’s loose organizational structure has given it a unique grassroots vibe from the beginning.
Cyclepalooza kicks off its fifth anniversary on Friday with another loose collection of events that are as creative as ever. To mark the occasion, here are five highlights of this year’s festival:
Bike Prom
This event, the semi-official kickoff to the festival, is simply an excuse to have some fun. Participants dress for the prom (this year’s theme: Neon disco) and ride through the Beltline and downtown with a few choice stops along the way. The ride winds up at the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Centre for, well, a prom, featuring music from I Am the Mountain and The Bitterweed Draw . More information here .
Art on Wheels
There’s no better way to explore some of Calgary’s public art than on a bike. At night. This ride will hit some of the city’s most interesting examples of public art in the dark, when they are at their most delightful. More information here.

Girl’s Bike Ride to Chestermere
This event is intended to help women get over the macho/gearhead culture that can sometimes seep in to bicycle culture. But mostly it’s to have some fun. Cyclepalooza Bike Polo
Bike polo is just what you think it is: like polo, but with a bicycle instead of a horse. It’s also a lot of fun, and this event is perfect for noobs who are yearning to try the sport. In fact, newbies are promised some prizes just for showing up. More information here.

The first event of its kind in the city, the YYC Bike Awards is a red-carpet event that will offer prizes to six people and organizations who are making the city friendlier to bikes. ]]>Last year, when riding my bike to the Calgary Stampede, I came upon an area for parking bikes labelled “Bike Corral,” which was a nice accommodation except for one thing: There were no bike racks.
This year, it’s a different story. When I pulled up to the same spot, not only were there racks galore, but I was greeted by a smiling Leor Rotchild who agreed to watch over my bike for the day. A bike valet at the Calgary Stampede? What a change a year makes.
Rotchild was there on behalf of Dig Events , a local company that is kind of like an environmental event planner. It is hired to help event organizers operate in a more environmentally friendly way. At the Calgary Stampede , Dig helped institute a compost program at Stampede Park last year, Rotchild said. This year, the company saw an opportunity to expand its offerings by accommodating people on bikes.
It’s not just for environmental reasons. Driving and parking a car at the Stampede is notoriously difficult and expensive, and the new downtown cycle-track network makes riding a bike there easy and convenient.
“The new cycle track pretty much goes right here,” Rotchild said. “When we proposed the idea, (Stampede organizers) through it was a good idea.”
He’s right. My ride to Stampede Park was fast and easy, and got me to within steps of the front gates. Now that it’s here, offering bike parking seems like kind of a no-brainer. And considering Rotchild said the service was overflowing with users on the weekend — “we were nearly oversubscribed. We almost had to bring in more racks” — others agree.
Bikes are becoming de rigueur at many big Calgary summertime events. The bike valet service at the Calgary folk festival overflows with an eye-popping number of bikes every year. Canada Day celebrations prompted record numbers of bikes crossing the Peace Bridge this year. And if you’ve never taken a night ride downtown during the Sled Island music festival, you’re missing out on what’s becoming a quintessential Calgary experience — Amsterdam-like cycling numbers from the hordes of music lovers filling venues all around downtown.
Bike parking seems to be a bike catalyst too. Rotchild said he chatting with one cyclist on the weekend who said riding to the Stampede was her first opportunity to use the cycle tracks.
“The best thing I see is the positive reaction from people,” he said. “People really seem to like this service.”
Volunteers and Dig employees operate the bike valet service from the opening of the Stampede midway at 10:30 a.m. until 9 p.m every day of the Stampede. They are located near the north and south entrances to the park.

When the plan to build a cycle track network downtown was announced, I rode my bike down the proposed route and shot some video , to give people some insight into what it was like to those streets them on a bike. Included in that ride was 12th Avenue S.W.
Now that the separated bike lane on 12th has opened, I did that again, this time using the new bike lane. I placed the videos side by side, the older pre-cycle-track video on the left, to show the difference. Here’s what it looks like:
A few things to note (other than the fact I got way better at shooting video the second time):
In the original video, watch for the proximity of cars to me, not just the moving one, but the parked ones. When I originally posted that video, I wrote that I was deathly afraid of being doored — an unknowing parker can easily open a door into a bike, which is a dangerous proposition. Notice the difference in the second video.
I shot both videos in the morning at the tail end of rush hour, between about 8:45 and 9 a.m. Take note of car and bike traffic in both videos.

]]>Complaining about construction projects impeding your commute is practically a rite of passage in Calgary. But when that construction project is bicycle infrastructure, like the work being down right now on the forthcoming downtown cycle-track network? That gets the tweeters tweeting and the reporters reporting, and the columnists columnizing, and before you know it, that little bollard-installation job has become the symbol of commuter angst.
But lost in all of the commuter hand-wringing the past few weeks (the separated bicycle lanes don’t open until the end of June), are some important voices. We’ve heard from some car commuters upset with the yet-to-open lanes, but the voices of people most directly affected by those cycle tracks — those who live in the Beltline — have tended to be lost. And there are some pent-up demand to be heard, if my Twitter feed is to be believed (scroll down for a sampling).
Among those who responded to my Twitter request to people in the Beltline was Rob Taylor, president of the Beltline Communities. He, and many of this neighbours, can’t wait for the bike lanes to open. He thinks the lanes have been miscast as something for commuters. Taylor says the lanes may be even more important for people like him because they are going to make it easier, not just to get to work, but to get around his neighbourhood. Getting groceries, going to restaurants and visiting friends are all being simplified.
“It’s fabulous,” he told me over the phone. “For us, this is more than just alternative transportation. There’s a lifestyle benefit and a cultural benefit. It ties into generational change, and an urban way of life. All this emphasis on commuting, that’s made it harder (for people to accept). But there’s no problem here.”
The Beltline has a huge population. More than 20,000 people live there, making it among the third most populated community in the city. It’s also dense, and geographically small, which means using a bike to get around it makes perfect sense. But Kate Jones, who lives on 12th Avenue where a cycle track in being installed right now (“It’s so tempting to start using it,” she says with a laugh), said it’s rarely been easy to get around on a bike. She thinks that’s going to change with the new cycle tracks.
“For me, I usually tend to take the back streets to get around,” she said. “Now, we’ll have a main artery. It will be a no-brainer. It will help connect people, and pull them into their social environment. I think most people (here) think it’s a good thing.”
Both Taylor and Jones, who have been outspoken supporters of the bike network, say the addition of the lanes may be difficult for some commuters to accept, but they think most people in the Beltline intuitively understand the benefits. People who have chosen to live in the city’s most urban residential neighbourhood embrace urban living, and see how bike lanes have made life better in other cities.
“We’ve found the resistance — all this need to quantify everything, and the experimenting — it’s been frustrating,” Taylor said. “It’s not an experiment. It’s been going on in other cities for years. We don’t know why (the cycle-track network is) an experiment, why it’s so short, and why it goes nowhere to nowhere. Let’s get on with it already.”
It’s not all roses. Some people who live in the Beltline say the cycle tracks have already made it more difficult to access their residences. Construction has created congestion, which nobody likes.
Yet many people who live in the area are trying to remain open-minded about the bike lanes. On a philosophical level, some Beltliners say they feel gratified their needs are finally being accommodated after decades in which they felt like afterthoughts, as roads through their community were managed only to get people in and out of downtown efficiently.
It’s probably too early to pass judgement of any kind on the new bike lanes — they haven’t even opened yet, and traffic of all kinds will be monitored as part of the nearly 18-month pilot project — but at least some of the people who live in the neighbourhood are trying to tune out some of the negativity that has greeted them.
Here are some more thoughts from people living in the Beltline who responded to my request for comment on Twitter (most of whom, as has been pointed out, tend toward those who ride bikes because they follow me and I write about bikes. Go figure) .

]]>It’s as tragic a story as they come: a young Calgary father out for a bike ride on the highway, struck from behind by a vehicle and killed. That’s what happened to 42-year-old Deric Kryevnchuk earlier this month while riding on Highway 7, a straight-as-an-arrow, wide-shouldered prairie highway that links Okotoks and Black Diamond.
But was the case a tragic accident, or was it something different? According to Global News , police are now considering charges against the driver, which highlights a troubling debate.
Cyclist fatalities on highways are exceedingly rare in the area, but when they do happen, I always hear from cyclists who are frustrated when charges are not laid because that perpetuates the perception that such collisions are unavoidable accidents in the eyes of the law. For drivers, it’s horrific to think that a moment of inattention may end up killing a cyclist, and so it’s easy to brush off the idea of fault in such situations. It could happen to any of us, and nobody meant any harm, right?
Cyclists are increasingly frustrated with such reactions because it feels like it minimizes the importance of the dead. Last year, a New York Times piece provocatively titled Is it OK To Kill Cyclists argued that, based on the fact that serious charges are rarely laid against drivers, it would be logical to assume that killing cyclists is allowable.
With that in mind, seeing that charges may be laid in this case against the driver is probably heartening to many cyclists, especially because it seems like, given the limited information available in this case, the cyclist did nothing wrong (although we should be clear that we don’t know the whole story). But I think there’s a bigger problem at play here.
People who ride bikes tell me constantly how they are frustrated with the blame-the-victim mentality that greets such incidents. Police often issue warnings urging cyclists to use caution on highways, to stay as far to the right as possible, and to ride single file. Media reports usually include information on whether the cyclist was wearing a helmet, even if it’s irrelevant to the situation. That is all logical advice, but rarely do such no-brainer warnings apply to drivers. For cyclists who already feel like second-class citizens on many of our roads, those reactions feel as if drivers are given a free pass to maim and kill, while the blame falls on the most vulnerable.

And it’s not just cyclists. A rash of pedestrian deaths in recent months in Calgary were often greeted with warnings for pedestrians to pay attention and to cross roads only in marked areas, even in situations when the pedestrian was acting lawfully. To be fair, police often issue warnings to drivers, but the perception remains.
Obviously this is a legal issue — in other countries, fault in such collisions can fall on the person in the bigger vehicle as a way of protecting the most vulnerable — but there’s a larger societal issue at play here. It’s a symptom of the dominance of the car in society, and the absurd level of carnage that we’ve come to accept as the price of our transportation system. We all know vehicles take a horrific toll, even after 40 years of improved safety, but we’ve grown blasé about it. That’s the real issue here.
That, however, seems to be changing, at least in some places. Nobody is suggesting we do away with the motor vehicle, but some jurisdictions are finally facing up to its dangers. Much attention has been paid to a landmark program in Sweden called Vision Zero , which aims to reduce traffic fatalities to zero though a number of initiatives that include education, reducing speed limits and design changes. The program hasn’t quite reached its goal yet, but it’s made such huge strides that the idea has spread to cities all over the world. New York is among the latest to adopt the idea, and while it’s program isn’t as successful yet , at the very least, it challenges the idea that debilitation and death are simply the cost of getting around.
We could do with a little bit of such thinking around here. Last year, for example, news that the intersection of 16th Ave. and 10th Street N.W. , a road with a bike lane, was the site of more than 27,000 photo speeding tickets (that’s 75 a day!) sparked a curious reaction. Blame was spread to everybody — belligerent drivers not “getting the message,” students at SAIT, and even cash-grabbing police. But it’s time to start thinking deeper about such problems, and perhaps the intersection itself might be seen as part of the problem. Could design fix these dangers? It’s difficult to say, but worth thinking about.
There’s no simple solution to traffic fatalities, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. We owe it to the families of people like Deric Kryevnchuk.

]]>Most mornings, Stephane Roy begins his day with a bike ride alongside his wife through the rolling hills of the Quebec townships north of Montreal. If that sounds like an fantasy, considering the beauty of the area, wait until you hear about his day job.
Roy is the set and props designer for Cirque du Soleil’s Kurios , a new show currently running under the big tent in Calgary. Like most Cirque shows, Kurios offers up an entire fantastical universe that seems plucked straight from the imaginations of people like Roy. But what struck me while watching the show recently, because I’m a bike nerd, was the use of bicycles. Bikes seem to be everywhere in the show — transporting characters, spinning through acts and even being used as props for those trademark Cirque acrobats to contort their bodies around, which, unless you are lucky, may be the only time you’ll see a woman in tights using a bike in that way.
So I jumped at the chance to speak with Roy on the phone from Quebec about bikes. He told me that use of bicycles was no accident. The decision to build the bicycle into the show so intricately was made early in its conception, not only for practical reasons, but because of the feelings and sentiments the machines evoke. The show is inspired by Paris of the early 1900s, when excitement for the future was wrapped up in the technology of the day and the world was in the midst of an iPhone-like craze for bicycles. In creating the kind of fantastical turn-of-the-century steampunk world of Kurios, the bicycle was a perfect fit, a kind of visual short-cut for the technological optimism of the time.
Then there was the practical side of things. The simple mechanics of the bike were put to good use by Roy in moving props, sets and characters around the stage.
“In circus, it’s the body that makes things move. We try to use biomechanics as much as possible,” Roy said. “The bicycle is one of the best examples of technology that comes from manpower.”
Roy said building the perfect bikes for the show was a challenge. He experimented with the big-wheel-in-front penny farthing designs of the Victorian era, but eventually settled on more utilitarian models because he felt they fit the performance better. He was convinced that everyday Dutch-style bikes were the right fit, but tracking down suitable models with the right look was a bit of a challenge in Quebec. He eventually found some Second World War-era Dutch models with the right look online, and had them delivered to his workshop.
Once there, he stripped the bikes down and got to work turning them into machines that could exist in the Kurios world. Plastic parts where replaced with leather. Some were outfitted with hooks that enabled them to be elevated above the stage. For parts of the show in which bikes pedal themselves, a remote-controlled motor, not unlike those found in toy cars, was hidden in some luggage strapped to the back rack and connected to the bike’s transmission.
All of the bikes were converted to single-speed models for simplicity’s sake. But even that wasn’t as straightforward as you might think. For a scene involving a bike and a Russian cradle, in which a performer hangs by his knees while tossing a lithe acrobat about, the correct gear ratio had to be found. Too low might make for an awkward-looking start. Too high and the rider would have difficulty pedalling. Roy eventually settled on a gear that was big enough to allow for a smooth start while still enabling the performer to pedal smoothly.
At one point, there were more than 10 bikes in the show, but several were eventually cut to streamline the performance. But in speaking with Roy, who has worked on more than 100 stage productions in his career, that experimentation seems to be part of the joy of his job.
“It was a prop show, and it was crazy fun,” he said. “In the case of Kurios, the moment we started, it was a universe we loved. So it was easy.”
And there’s little doubt those early morning bike rides had a little hand in the inspiration.

]]>Is there a better beer than the one you drink after a long bike ride? Pouring some hoppy gold down your parched gullet is one of the great joys of life.
So why not bring those two great things together more formally? That’s the idea behind BikesnBrews , a new initiative co-founded by Richard Link, a well-known figure in Calgary’s cycling community, that will pair bikes with local craft beer into a series of cycling events that also raise money for charity.
The first event kicks off tomorrow at Tool Shed Brewing . The idea is simple: Nine local craft breweries and 12 local cycling groups, shops and organizations come together in a room to show off their stuff. Organizers will even pair the right beer with the right bike, bike shop or bike ride. A silent auction at the event will also raise money for Kids Cancer Care
“Cyclists have long been divided into different tribes including urban, mountain, road, racing and so forth,” said Link in a news release. “We plan to bring them all together through a mutual appreciation for craft beer and unusual activities connected to the cycling world.”
It sounds like a cool initiative, it’s totally local, and brings together some great ideas. I think it will be fun.

Also worth keeping on your radar is next week’s Bike to Work Day . The annual event, organized by Calgarian Lonny Balbi and small group of helpers, offers some simple encouragement to give bicycle commuting a try. Scattered throughout downtown will be pit stops with freebies and tuneups from local bike shops. The big event takes place at Eau Claire market where Lonny pays for a pancake breakfast for whoever makes it down in time.
This year Balbi has added a new twist. He’s promised to donate one dollar for every bicycle to the Nathan O’Brien Children’s Foundation. Nathan O’Brien’s family is also taking part in the event’s Suit Pursuit which takes place tomorrow. This is a commuter race in which celebrity cyclists (this year, it’s Nathan’s parents, Rod and Jennifer O’Brien) race a person in a car and another on public transit on a typical commute into downtown. I’m not going to give you a hint about who’s likely to win, suffice to say the event is not called Drive to Work Day.
Bike to Work Day has grown into a great stop on the bike calendar, and, if the number of bikes were seeing out on the trails already this year seems high, Balbi and company may have something to do with it.

]]>Is there a bicycle culture in your city?
It’s a term that gets tossed around a lot in discussions about urban cycling, even if it is rather amorphous. What is bicycle culture? Is it a lifestyle in which many people ride? Is it bike festivals and events? Is it gathering thousands of naked people together every year to go on an afternoon ride in a gratuitous test of saddle technology? Or is it meaningless?
One of the things that struck me while attending the recent Winter Cycling Congress in Leeuwarden, Netherlands (full disclosure: I was invited to speak at the event and organizers paid for my plane ticket), was the way the Dutch consider the idea of bike culture: With blank stares and confusion.
In the most bike-friendly country in the world, in a city with thousands of people who ride bikes every day for transportation, nearly every Dutch person I asked was genuinely baffled by the idea of a bike culture. “We don’t have a bike culture,” they all insisted. “We just ride bikes.”
It seems a weird contradiction, and I thought they were having me on until I chatted with an American photographer who had relocated to the Netherlands several years ago. Shirley Agudo recently published a book called The Dutch and their Bikes: Scenes From a Nation of Cyclists , filled with beautiful photographs of people on bikes throughout the country. Agudo said most Dutch people expressed surprise that somebody thought of such a book. They were confused about why anyone would be interested in something so ordinary as riding a bike in their everyday lives. To borrow a famous quote from Copenhagenize’s Mikael Colville-Andersen, they might equivocate it to releasing a photography book about vacuuming. It took an outsider like Agudo, it seems, to recognize how extraordinary cycling in the Netherlands really is.
That explains, I think, why the Dutch were so baffled by the idea of a cycling culture. There’s no culture around bike transportation any more than there is a culture around taking the bus in Canada.
Where cycling “culture” may exist, however, is in North America. Cycling has long been divided into tribes or subcultures of people who tend to identify with their own group. Mountain bikers, roadies, fat bikers. But what cycling doesn’t currently have is a mass culture, big enough to move beyond those distinctions.
The Dutch were able to move beyond that by doing such a good job at building bikes into their everyday lives and cities they’ve forgotten it’s exceptional. While trying to build new Amsterdams all over the world is probably a silly and misguided goal, we might consider another dream: bringing about the end of bike culture.

]]>There’s a buzzphrase about urban transportation these days. “Complete streets.” You’ve heard it. Cites are making it their goal to change many roads from the way they exist now, basically as smooth delivery platforms for cars, into something that works for everyone, not just drivers.
For many people, myself included, this always seemed like a nice notion that was difficult to visualize. Does it mean adding bike lanes? Expanding sidewalks? More space for street hockey? I think a lifetime in Canada made it difficult for me to truly understand what a complete street was supposed to be. That’s probably why I’ve been, like many Calgarians, nervously anticipating plans to introduce bikes onto Calgary’s pedestrian-only Stephen Avenue Walk later this year, worried about conflicts and potential accidents.
After attending the third Winter Cycling Congress in the Netherlands recently, I can officially say I now get what a complete street really is. I was invited to speak at the event (full disclosure: organizers paid for my plane ticket to attend), which took place in Leeuwarden, a northern city of about 100,000 people that may be most famous as the birthplace of Mata Hari. But what I’ll remember most is seeing a complete street in action. Of course, nobody there called it a complete street. It was just a street. But the way people used the road was a real eye-opener.
This idea didn’t exist on all of the roads. The fast and busy multi-lane roads and highways didn’t look much different than those in North America, except for the presence of weird brands of North American cars (Ford Ka? Wha?), and of course, for the ever-present cycle tracks and bike routes running alongside. You know the Dutch and their bikes. But on roads with slower speeds and less traffic, that separation was thrown out the window. Onto the road, everybody mixed. I mean everybody. People on bikes, cars, trucks, mopeds, strollers. And what was perhaps most surprising to me: they did this on streets nearly devoid of road signage.
Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. “Great idea, hippie. Throw everybody together with no rules and somebody’s gonna get killed.” I thought the same thing, especially the first time a car squeezed past me as I strolled down the middle of the road pulling my suitcase. But after a few hours in the city, I got used to the idea, felt safe, a little exhilarated (in a city-nerd kind of way) and I realized that people approached the road in a fundamentally different way. It’s almost as if the idea of a road was different.
Rather than fighting for space, with signage and a handbook telling everyone how to behave, people simply got along. I’m reluctant to say they “shared” the road, because of all the connotations that term has picked up in recent years, but that really was how people behaved. Drivers went slow, and manoeuvred around the eye-popping number of cyclists. Moped drivers slowed (most of the time) for pedestrians. Delivery trucks backed up in the middle of a street, and people simply went around. As one Dutch delegate to the conference said: “It’s based on relationships instead of rules.” What he meant was that people on the street made their way around by communicating with the people around them, with eye contact and social cues and body language. That’s a high falutin’ way of saying that people were just being people.
The roads seemed to function based on patience and respect as well. At one point, a large group of delegates gathered in the middle of the road for a photo and traffic in both ways stopped and, amazingly, waited. Us North Americans felt sheepish about stopping cars and were cringing in anticipation of an assault of car horns that never came. The Dutch carried on arranging people for the photo as if they, well, owned the road.
This doesn’t always work. Near the NHL University building (don’t get excited, Canadians, it has nothing to do with hockey. NHL stands for Noordelijke Hogeschool Leeuwarden) , the city had recently converted a large section of roadway to a “shared space,” which looked, basically, like a wide road with a bus stop on one side. Our group strolled to the middle of the space and hung out, but cars and buses came by rather quickly for my taste. Another delegate from Leeuwarden confessed the shared space hadn’t been a complete success. It was too wide, he felt, which gave a cue to car drivers that it was safe to go quickly. The city had recently installed a planter in the middle of the road in an attempt to slow the traffic, but he grumbled that it still wasn’t quite right. The point is that what makes shared space and complete streets work is making everybody feel safe and welcome. That doesn’t mean we all have to hold hands around a campfire – most of it comes through design.
What does all of this have to do with Stephen Avenue? I still share some of the consternation about the impact of adding bikes to what has been Calgary’s premier (and only) meaningful pedestrian street, but Leeuwarden showed me how people can get along when they are left to just be people. And without cars there to further complicate things, the process should be smoother still.
I expect there may still be problems from time to time, but hopefully, this move will make one street in Calgary a little more complete.

]]>There was some interesting feedback to my post the other day about complete streets . I want to share some of it.
Many people questioned whether the concept could truly work in North America, considering how clogged our streets are with cars. It’s a good question. Compared to the Netherlands, where the idea originated, the rate of car ownership is much higher here, and even quiet residential roads in North America tend to be overrun with vehicles.
Before exploring that question too deeply, however, a point of clarification. In the Netherlands, the idea of a complete street does not negate the need for bike infrastructure. The roads in which space is shared are limited to those with slow speed limits, and little car traffic. Those tend to be the older, sometimes medieval streets that are so narrow that most drivers hate them anyway. The speed limits on them are usually less than 30 km/h. In North America, that would include almost no streets. In Calgary, where I live, that would make a “complete street” nearly impossible, except for short stretches of roads considered school zones.
In Leeuwarden, every road with a speed limit greater than about 30 km/h includes separated bike and pedestrian infrastructure. Like this:

The Ottawa Bike Lanes Project debated the very idea of shared space, and pointed to the work of researcher David Hembrow.
Even on slow streets, they argued, the presence of too many cars can simply dominate the space.
Hembrow’s article is worth a read . He argues, basically, the “shared space” idea has been oversold. He says cars ruin the concept of shared space. Not only to the add danger to the spaces, their presence makes cyclists and pedestrians feel unsafe and discourages them from using the space.
I also received a thoughtful email from Mark Hottentot who disputed some of my ideas. He said there are some key differences between Dutch and North American cities that he felt I glossed over. Most of the differences have to do with cars. In the Netherlands, car ownership is less universal, and their use is discouraged, especially in inner cities. Some cities have even banned their use. Here is some of what he wrote:

These are all great points, and worth considering. One final thought: For a North American version of “complete streets,” it’s worth looking at the concept of neighbourhood greenways. This idea was popularized in Portland, and the concept is being implemented in many cities, including Calgary.
Basically, the idea is that slower, low-volume streets be better shared between people in cars and people using other modes, like feet and bikes. The film below details the idea.
The biggest drawback to the idea is one of volume: The concept is nice, but without enough cyclists and pedestrians to truly change the feel of the street, cars continue to dominate. Perhaps this idea is one to aspire to rather than rush to implement.

]]>Doug Dunlop remembers the first time he saw those treadmarks in the snow. They were big. Like, gigantic. Big enough that they dwarfed even the marks left by the tires of the mountain bike he was riding. He remembers it because he was in a winter bike race through the snow, desperately trying to catch up to whatever machine was leaving those giant tire tracks. He never did.
This was nearly 20 years ago, in Alaska, at one of the famed epically long midwinter mountain bike races that were inspired by the Iditarod sled dog race. Dunlop was part of a tiny group of amateur athletes who thrived on bike races through the snow at a time when most people thought they were nuts. Riding bikes in the winter was something for masochists and misguided ideologues, or at least that was the perception.
It’s a different story today. Dunlop says he rarely hits the snowy trails these days without encountering other fat bikes, and that growth is both fuel and evidence of a major change in what has nearly always been a summer pastime. Those old obstacles that made cycling something specific to fair weather are falling away. Winter cycling is having its day.
Part of that change is attributable to changes in bicycle technology, specifically the exploding popularity of fat bikes. Fat bikes are aptly named, considering the width of their tires is nearly twice the girth of some traditional mountain bike tires in some cases. Fat bikes can crush snowbanks and float over powder in ways that traditional bikes can’t.
Fat bikes were developed in Alaska by that core group of riders who got their kicks riding through the snow. Among those riders was an American named Mark Gronewald, a committed bike tinkerer who ran a small bike shop. When Gronewald and a friend visited a bike trade show in 1999, he came across a man named Ray Molina who had developed huge tires to help with his bicycle tours through the deserts of Mexico. Gronewald thought such tires might work in snow, so he ordered a few sets to be delivered north.
The trouble was, the tires were so wide they wouldn’t fit a traditional bike frame. So Gronewald sketched some modifications and worked with a welder friend to develop a new frame that would accommodate the wheels. The sniggers at this frankenbike didn’t last long.
“The bigger tires made a huge difference, and people started to see that,” Gronewald says. “We were just armchair riders, and we were leaving some of the pros in the dust.”
Despite his success in the races, Gronewald never imagined there would be a big market for his creation. So he also didn’t think much of it a few years later when he received a prototype fat bike from American bicycle company Surly. Gronewald says he was a little suspicious that several of his innovations also appeared on this bike, but he still couldn’t imagine fat bikes ever hitting the mainstream.
Less than a decade later, Surly’s Pugsley, the world’s first mass-produced fat bike, is now seen as a pioneering model. Today, nearly every big bicycle manufacturer has its own fat bike, and the development of these winter bikes has been one of the industry’s success stories of the decade.
Gronewald, meanwhile, has given up trying to sell his own models. He says there’s no way he can compete with bigger companies. Today, he makes a living clearing trails in the Alaskan bush, but he says he’s not bitter about missing out on the success of fat biking. Rather, he’s happy he had a hand in opening up winter to people who love bikes.
“I think it’s a good thing as an alternative to driving, and getting people out and active in winter,” Gronewald says. “I could be bitter, but life is too short.”
The growth of fat bikes also mirrors the growth of winter cycling in general. As more cities build infrastructure to accommodate bicycles, more cyclists are also starting to ride bicycles year-round in cities — and not just fat bikes. Separated bikes lanes, provided they are cleared of snow (or, in some cases, packed with snow, which makes for great traction for all types of bicycles), remove much of the danger of cycling in winter, and urban riders and commuters are responding. While the number of people riding in winter remains small, demand is growing.
Still, the real change being heralded by fat bikes is on previously seasonal mountain bike trails. Ski resorts are starting to allow fat bikes on some cross-country routes — the Canmore Nordic Centre, for example, has several well-used fat bike trails — and this year will see the first national U.S. fat bike championships.
Since that initial encounter in Alaska, Dunlop has become a fat bike convert. He was one of the first adoptees of Surly’s original Pugsley, and these days he’s even taken his 11-year-old son out for occasional winter camping trips on fully loaded fat bikes.
”Fat bikes let you go where you’re not sure you’re going to encounter other people. They can really buy you a lot of solitude,” he says. “(But) since 2012, it’s rare that I don’t see at least fat bike tracks on the trail. The growth has been exponential, and mostly good. . . It’s great to see other people enjoying it out there.”

While you were watching the royal wedding this morning (by “watching” I mean “sleeping”), provincial Tory leadership candidate Gary Mar mounted a bike and bested a driver and transit rider in the annual downtown commuter race, an event that’s part of the May 6 Bike to Work Day. While that has its own entertainment value, it does raise an issue that cropped up only hours after this blog launched yesterday.
In my introductory post, I mentioned the questions that surround bicycle commuting, and commenter Midtoad made a good point: “Tom, there’s no debate as to whether bikes belong on the road. Their “drivers” have all the rights and responsibilities of any driver on the road. And indeed, most motorists accept that.”
Indeed, most motorists do accept that, and not only because it’s law, as seen in the this page from the Alberta driver’s license manua l (it’s near the bottom):
If that’s the case, why is there still a debate? I’ve had two conversations in recent weeks in which drivers told me they didn’t think bicycles should be on roads. Both were from smart, reasonable people who knew the law, but still insisted “roads were for cars.” One even said cyclists should be disallowed until “they pay for the roads,” which is a common if absurd statement (everybody pays taxes for roads).
My sense is that most drivers accept the law and the logic behind it (in fact, when I wrote a story for the paper about cycling last year, I had real trouble finding a driver who would go on the record being opposed to the idea of cyclists on roads), but many still harbour doubts. If you want to be a crank about it, you could say they simply don’t want to share. More accurately, I think, is that many motorists worry about accidentally running over a cyclist. Nobody wants that.
So does Calgary still need to get over the very basic idea that cyclists belong on roads?

Look at this photo. It contains everything that is great about cycling.
The picture, swiped from Wikipedia, was taken in 1911 on a wooden bicycle track in Utah. A century later, you could still see this guy any day, on any street, in any city. His machine is not much different than one you would buy in any bike store today. Ditto his attire. Mustache? Maybe only if he’s a bike courier. Today or back then, he could take his bike on the track, for a Sunday spin, or off to the store for milk. But more importantly, perhaps, is that look on his face. It’s not smugness, that catchall term people these days like to throw at cyclists, nor conceit nor priggishness. It’s contentment. It’s the look you get when everything is just right. Cyclists know that feeling.
Since 1911, however, the world around cycling changed. Somehow, cycling became something reserved for athletes, kids and drunks who had their drivers licences revoked. But now, 100 years later, cycling is moving back to what it was originally (and, in actuality, always was); a fun, quick, healthy, green, practical way of getting around.
It hasn’t been a smooth transition. Cycling in a city today has become, to some, a political act. People who ride their bikes to work are seen as evangelists; a threat to a way of life.
It’s a hot issue in cities all over the world and now, after years of existing on the seams of Calgary’s transportation and recreational infrastructure, cycling seems poised for its own just-right moment.
City Hall is just weeks away from a new cycling strategy , and debate is heating up. Do bikes deserve space on our roads? What about our pathways? Who’s going to pay for it all? When did something as pure and simple as bike riding become something that needs a city hall committee and strategy?
Those questions sparked this blog. This isn’t a place for advocacy — that’s the job for others — but to carry on the conversation and to tell some of the stories. The politics, the professionals, the athletes, the recreationalists, the local scene, the culture, the fun — there are stories to share in all of it.
Most of the blog will come from me (an amateur cyclist if there ever was one) but one of my goals is to bring in as many voices as possible. ]]>It’s not as hot a topic as, say, massages, so perhaps it’s no surprise that cycling hasn’t exactly cracked the national debate during this election campaign. But that doesn’t mean it’s not an issue for many Canadians.
And granted, cycling is more a municipal issue — at least it has been in this country, despite calls for a national cycling strategy — but cycling does make a few appearances in the platforms of some federal parties. To find them, however, you’ll have to do a little digging.
That’s where I come in. If you haven’t already cast your vote today, before you cycle over to the polling station, here’s a quick look at what that digging turned up:

Conservatives
In the Tory platform, there’s no mention of the words bike, bicycle or cycle (nor tricycle, fixie or penny farthing, for that matter), but there is talk of supporting clean energy projects that will “assist regions and provinces in the replacement of fossil fuel with renewable fuel sources.” What’s more renewable than a pair of pedaling legs?
And the Tories have a pretty strong record on the preserving land for national parks, so if you’re a mountain biker who likes to tear through single track that is protected by law, you may be in luck.

Like the Tories, there’s no mention of cycling in the Liberal platform, but there is this photo of Michael Ignatieff in an oddly shaped hat that could resemble a cycling cap if you squint (squinting might also explain why he’s wearing a life jacket on the shore). Also like the Tories, the Liberal environmental platform meakes plenty of mention of renewable and clean energy that doesn’t mention cycling specifically and the preservation of national parks.

NDP leader Jack Layton was such a bike crusader when he served as a Toronto city councillor earlier in his career, he earned the nickname Bicycle Jack (uh, it wasn’t chosen by his supporters). The national NDP platform, however, makes little mention of cycling. I did, however, stumble across a platform for the party in B.C. that does contain the following bullet-point:
“Enact New Democrat MP Denise Savoie’s green commuter Bill C-466 to make employer-provided benefits for transit, carpooling and cycle commuting tax-free”
It’s not exactly Copenhagenesque, but at least the word “cycle” is mentioned.

The Greens have a section in their national strategy on Green urban transportation, which includes a number of philosophical and specific refrences to cycle commuting. The party promises to reduce urban sprawl, make cities more “livable” and do more to “take the lead in funding the ‘greening’ of Canada’s cities.” One of the proposals for that is to increase funding for “pedestrian, cycle and car-sharing infrastructure.”
The platform also makes mention of creating a tourism sector based on bicycle touring, dumping the GST on bikes and bike gear, and a section on matching investments intended to increase walking and cycling.

“Have you seen gas prices?” Lonny Balbi says, and erupts in laughter. He’s explaining a newly relevant reason to take part in Friday’s Bike to Work Day in his typically effusive manner.
Balbi is an overflowing well of bicycle enthusiasm. Luckily for Calgary cyclists, he’s focused that enthusiasm into the increasingly popular Bike to Work Day, a one-day spring event he organizes to encourage cycle commuting.
Balbi, a Calgary lawyer who cycles to his Beltline office, started Bike to Work Day several years ago simply as a way to get more people onto their bikes. While cycling has become embroiled in politics, with constant debates about urbanism and infrastructure money and bylaws, Balbi has little time for any of that. He just loves riding every morning, and he wants more people to feel what he feels.
“For us, it’s always been trying to get people to try it once,” Balbi said in an interview this week. “We think if people try it once they’ll see it’s not so bad. So we try to make it easy for them.”
From 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., there will be pit stops throughout downtown (see map below) with freebies, mechanics from local bike shops and a general aura of cycle friendliness intended to make getting to work on your bike easy. And lest you think this is some kind of initiative imported from Portland or Copenhagen, there’s a free pancake breakfast at Eau Claire for the first 500 people. What’s more Calgarian than that?
Balbi says one of his missions is to kill the notion that cycle commuting is only for athletes or masochists. Last week, his yearly commuter race once again had a cyclist, this time it was provincial politician Gary Mar, beating out a car, bus and C-Train on a downtown commute.”We want to show that anybody can do it,” Balbi says.
While Balbi does have a clear head about some of the issues facing cycling in Calgary — he knows that worries about safety are still the biggest obstacle — he seems determined to remind people how fun and invigorating a bicycle can be.
“Calgary is a young, vibrant city and we’ve got great paths,” he says. “Just try it once. I think people will like it.”

With Bike to Work Day in mind, I thought it would be a good time to ask readers to share their cycle commuting tips for newbies; a kind of Wikitips for Calgary commuters (I blame Julian Assange for making everything with “Wiki” in the prefix sound slightly sinister). Here’s my tip: Hauling shoes to work every day sucks. If you work in an office requiring business casual attire, buy two pairs of shoes. Keep one in your office to wear once you bike in to work, and another at home for those days when you must drive.

There’s a tendency out there to think that the issue of urban cycling is one reserved for big cities, and towns or smaller cities have things better. I received an email from a reader in Lethbridge this week that belies that notion. Here’s what he had to say:

Last year there was a feeble attempt to address the needs of cyclists in our city which report resulted in a single bicycle lane on the north side of the city that does not fit in at all with cycle commuter needs.
There are three major issues that need to be resolved;
1. Skills. Know the rules of the road and how to safely operate the vehicle you are in control of both motorists and cyclists.
2. Respect. Follow the rules of the road. If you are in or using a traffic lane be aware of your obligations as a driver no matter your vehicle of choice.
3. Safety
I am both a driver and a cyclist and accident and ticket free for at least 30 years. I have celebrated my 60th birthday and choose to cycle whenever weather permits.
I have a few observations to share with other person’s I occupy the road with.
Most cyclists are complete ignoramuses when it comes to courtesy and make every other cyclist fair game in the eyes of the “macho 1 ton diesel jockey” who can’t see beyond the ram on the hood of his truck.
Most motorists no matter what their gender or what they drive would not dare to maneuver in the path of a bicycle if the driver was driving a motor vehicle.
Safety: No one wants to die or commit vehicular homicide.
When I cycle I use hand signals, take my turn at stop signs and obey traffic rules yet so many times I have had to evade the actions of idiots driving cars (of whom I marvel keep their drivers licenses) even though I am armed with fluorescent clothing and flashing lights.
I have had some rather animated discussions with drivers who have put my life in danger and will continue to advocate my personal safety with any incompetent of operator of any wheeled vehicle as is my right.

The New York Times ran this story on Sunday , about the leaders of a suburb of Boston who are planning to include a census question asking people to rate their happiness from one to 10. It’s just the latest example of ways policy makers and academics are trying to find better ways of measuring people’s happiness (which the Herald wrote about here (there’s a plug for my day job)).
What does that have to do with cycling? Twice in the story is the suggestion of a simple idea cities can do to improve the happiness of its citizens: bike lanes.
Many cities have keyed onto the idea that bike lanes improve the quality of life of its citizens. It’s intuitive — biking is a healthy, active, safe way of connecting with your community — and there’s some real science behind it too. The economic think tank NEF recently issued a report called Measuring Our Progress that pointed out the social and economic benefits of cycling to work.
“A wealth of literature from researchers studying stress and related effects reveals “persistent and significant costs associated with a long commute through heavy traffic,” the report said. “By contrast, studies comparing the experiences of commuting by bicycle and car report that cyclists find their mode of transport at least as flexible and convenient as those who use cars, with lower stress and greater feelings of freedom, relaxation and excitement.”

Last week, the rollout of Toronto’s much anticipated public-bike sharing program took off, with a few hitches , but for the most part, left cyclists and urbanites gushing and feeling quite sexy while doing so.
For those new to the idea of public bike sharing, here’s the Cole’s notes version: The idea of sharing public bikes has been kicking around for decades, but got a big boost in 2007 when Paris launched its Velib program, in which 2,000 stylishly red bikes were offered for short-term rent at a number of public bike stands around the city. The basic idea was this: you swipe a card to unlock a bike, ride it across town for lunch, then return it to a different bike stand. The system tracks the time you’ve had the bike and charges you a modest rate accordingly.
Despite a few hitches along the way (the cost to maintain the bikes and combat vandalism have been greater than anticipated), the program has been successful. So successful that a Montreal company called Bixi improved on it, and began selling similar systems around the world. Since 2009, Bixi has taken over Montreal, Melbourne, and Minneapolis and, most notably, London, England in 2010. Even though the London program was dubbed “Boris bikes” after the city’s bike-loving mayor (who recently gave a tandem Bixi to the royal couple as a wedding gift ), Bixi is becoming synonymous with new kind of cycling urbanism. It doesn’t hurt that the bikes are fawned over for their stylish, sturdy and sensible design. (to answer the first questions that comes to every Canadians’ minds, the bikes and stands are removed in Montreal for the winter, but they will remain year-round in Toronto’s more temperate climate).
So last week, Toronto launched its own Bixi program in the face of a full bike backlash that swept current Mayor Rob Ford to power, based partly on his opposition to the city’s “war on cars,” (a backlash that was focused as much on plans for a new train expansion as it was to the installation of some controversial bike lanes).
Now that several big Canadian cities have dived into Bixi, the idea is starting to circulate around Calgary. Last year, Calgary Ald. Brian Pincott expressed some support for the idea on Twitter, and was backed up by some local cycling advocates. There is some hesitation out there from some quarters, who worry that more bike infrastructure is needed first. If people are afraid to ride their own bikes downtown, the thinking goes, why would they ride a public bike downtown? They worry that nascent public support for cycling might be squandered if such a program fails. The counter argument, of course, is that cycling infrastructure and bike sharing are interdependend and should be developed simultaneously. And if it has worked in so many other cities, why not Calgary?

After posting this blog, I was updated on some of the Calgary city council history on this issue via Twitter. @cheriyyc reminded us that the idea of a bike share program did go to council back in 2008. Ald. Druh Farrell then said the motion to explore the idea lost by one vote. Farrell also added this: “I think YYC (Calgary) is ready to try again.”

Clara Hughes, Canada’s Olympic hero, and no stranger to Calgary because of her many speedskating victories at the Olympic Oval, won a gold medal in cycling today at the UCI Pan-American championships. She’s already won Olympic medals in both cycling and speedskating, but apparently she’s not finished yet. Oh yeah, she’s 38 years old.

Bike to Work Day Founder Lonny Balbi explains what he hopes cyclists get out of the event.
Two things caught my eye while taking in this year’s Bike to Work Day at Eau Claire Market today.
1. Like any true Calgarian, I’ve been to a lot of pancake breakfasts in my time, but never have I seen a pancake line so filled with people wearing helmets.
2. There was a rush-hour bike traffic jam down by the Louise Bridge.
For cyclists in the city, these are both welcome signs (the former, of course, being that nobody wants to see a head injury in a pancake lineup), and they both had founder Lonny Balbi smiling.
Balbi estimated 2,500 to 3,000 people took in the event at Eau Claire and a number of other locations downtown, which were set up to give out freebies and offer free tuneups donate by local bike shops.

The cycling lane heading into the East Village separates pedestrians, cyclists and cars.
I know I’m a year late, but earlier this week I took my inagural ride on the “new” dedicated cycling lane down in the East Village. It’s only a couple of kilometres long, stretching from around Eau Claire to Fort Calgary, but I was suitably impressed. I was less impressed with the cube van parked smack in the middle of the lane, and the baffled look on the driver’s face when I flashed him a dirty look, but impressed nonetheless.
With dedicated cycling lanes in their infancy in Calgary, I thought this was a nice start. The lane is clearly marked, with separate areas for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. Unlike many of the city-designated on-street bikeways, it has destinations on both sides (Eau Claire on one end and the East Village/Fort Calgary on the other, with connecting pathways on both ends), and, like much of the infrastructure the City has installed in the area, it’s attractive.
I’ve heard a few cyclists gripe under their breath about the lane, mostly that they were underwhelmed with the way it was cleared of snow in the winter, but those complaints mostly fall into the category of “it’s great to have, but…”
So I’m curious what everybody else thinks about the lane. Is this a model for the rest of the city? What could be improved?

Imagine cycling in a suburban city full of hills, where the wind rips off the Pacific and it rains 155 days a year.
Not exactly the ideal place to create a bike-friendly metropolis, does it? Well, that describes Portland, Ore., and 20 years ago, before an aggressive campaign to build bicycle infrastructure and change attitudes turned it into the model bike-friendly city in North America.
In other words, before Mia Birk.
In 1993, Birk, who grew up in Dallas, got a job as the Bicycle Co-ordinator for the city of Portland. In her new book Joy Ride , she recounts the subsequent two-decade battle to transform the city from a car haven to one teeming with bicycles.
Birk now works as a civic consultant and advocate and will be in Calgary to speak of her experiences on Thursday at the downtown library at 7 p.m. In an interview prior to her first visit to Calgary, in which she’ll also offer some advice to city planners, Birk offered a hard-fought practical and passionate perspective on the debate over bike infrastructure.
“There’s no magic recipe to making a city more bicycle friendly,” she says. “Every city is different, but we have learned some lessons that can help.”
First off, Birk had little time for that often heard argument that Calgary was just not built for bikes. We’re not Portland, I remind her.
“No city in North America was built for bikes,” she says. “Portland wasn’t. You’ve just got to start.”
Birk has worked as a consultant in dozens of North American cities, and she’s seen the lurches in progress followed by the backlash followed by more progress. It’s all part of the process, she says.
“Change is hard, and this is a big change,” she says. “Some people feel it very deeply. People feel threatened, like (bike advocates) are coming for their cars. That’s not what this is about… This isn’t a wholesale rejection of the North American way of life. But I’ve seen it over and over.”
Changing attitudes is a big part of making cities more friendly to bicycles, but Birk says infrastructure is a must. Good infrastrucutre will get more people on their bikes, which is the best way get get people on board with the idea.
“Opposition stems from the fact that it can be very frightening to think about riding in traffic,” she says. “Those mostly emotional things can be overcome, but we have to have the infrastrcuture to make it easy for them.”
She also says cities should take a longer term, practical look at things. Turning around a city doesn’t happen overnight.
“If we affect two, three, four per cent of (vehicle trips), that signals success,” she says. “We invest billions is transit to affect two, three, four per cent change. Cycling infrastructure is a lot cheaper.”
Birk has a wealth of practical tips for those hoping to to make their community more friendly to bikes — focus on improving short rides within communities first, get kids riding to school, host cycling events, market the idea — but there is one thing about Calgary that has even her stymied: winter. She confesses it would take a lot for her to get on a bike in the middle of a Calgary February, but says that doesn’t mean cycling isn’t appropriate in Calgary. She says northern European cities have succeeded all year round, and even in Portland, the number of cyclists in the winter today is equal to the number who rode in the summer 10 years ago.
“I don’t have a perfect solution, but if you do live in a place that is cold, there are ways,” she says. “And if we see a dip (in numbers) in the winter, so be it.”
In looking back over her 20 years, Birk says she was reminded that, despite all the battles — and she advises cycling advocates to grow skin as thick as a rhinocerous — it was worth it.
“It doesn’t work to tell people they should bike bcause it’s good for the environment or it will help (ease traffic) congestion or because they are overweight. People don’t want to be scolded,” she says. “But we’re doing the right thing. It’s good on every level. We have to have faith that it will pay off.
“This is about making the world better for our kids.”

Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong is making a trip back to Calgary for a cancer fundraising benefit in September.
Armstrong will be in Calgary on Sept. 8 to take part in LinkPink 2011, a fundraiser of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, that will see individual and team riders taking part on a 60 km ride with Armstrong. Later that day, he will deliver a speech and take part in a Q&A session with famous cycling commentator Phil Liggett.
Armstrong retired from cycling last year, but continues to raise money for cancer research.
He has made several fundraising trips to Calgary over the years, including one in 2008 .

Just a few more thoughts to share on Mia Birk’s visit to Calgary on Thursday.

It was nearly a packed house for her public lecture last night at the downtown library, and I think even Birk was a little surprised by the response. She told me she rarely gets as much media attention as she did in Calgary, even though she has visited dozens of cities during her work as a consultant and advocate. She also said was pleased so many aldermen joined the mayor for her presentation to the City earlier in the day.
And perhaps even more telling was a comment made by a presenter at the public event who said he couldn’t fathom getting such attention for cycling even two years ago. Having followed the cycling community sporadically through the last decade as a journalist, I have to agree. Thursday night’s speech by Birk was practically a love-in. Her jokes slayed the audience, people were whooping it up and shouting out quips. There was a mood in the room that reminded me of the feeling some supporters of Mayor Naheed Nenshi said they felt after his victory earlier this year — a feeling that finally their voices are being heard.
Of course you can’t judge a movement based on one jubilant event, and there’s a whole city out there that may not be as giddy as Birk’s audience was last night. But after last night’s event, Ald. Druh Farrell tweeted something that I think many people at the event were feeling “I get the impression that #yyc is ready for cycling.” There is a sense out there that Calgary is ready to seriously start developing itself as a cycling city.
Some of this mood can be attributed to anticipation of the city’s new cycling strategy, which is released June 10. It’s an important time for the development of transportation of all kinds in the city, and this will undoubtedly be an important document. There are plenty of things Calgarians can do to make the city more friendly to bikes without government help, but Birk said infrastructure has been a crucial part of every city’s cycling evolution.
Yet no matter how Calgarians react to the cyclist strategy, there’s something perhaps even more important looming on the horizon: the city budget. At a time when talk of the budget seems to dominate every conversation about municipal government, will money be found for cycling? That’s the big question.

]]>There should be a word to describe that feeling when your back tire slides out just a bit on a patch of gravel on the pathways and your heart leaps into your stomach and you envision one half of your body turned into a pulpy mess of stones and flesh only to recover and straighten things out and then become infused with an ego boost that makes you think you can handle any terrain the bike gods can throw at you, only to have that feeling fade at the next patch of gravel.
While I was pondering that, and surfing through the City’s fancy new interactive street sweeping schedule , I started wondering. Hey, when will the pathways be as clean as the streets?
So I called the City today and received the following information: The City’s lone sweeping machine dedicated to pathways is currently working 10 hours a day to remove those leg-skin threatening patches of gravel. The entire pathway is expected to be swept clean by mid-July. Which is exactly when the city expects to have the roads clean.

]]>If you thought Calgary was in the midst of a heated debate about bikes the last few months, you haven’t been following the New York battle.
After several years of ambitious growth of bike lanes, the city is now in backlash mode, with heated debate over the head of the city’s cycling commissioner as only New York can.
That’s why I got a kick out of this out of this piece from The Awl about a dream Utopian New York cycling future, including a car-free Broadway, written by a non-cyclist, who manages to be both insulting (“Bike people (have) a sweaty halo of superiority”) and envious ( “I appreciate bikes. It’s kind of like having gazelles in the city. Imagine if there were a million beautiful gazelles running around the city at all times.”) A fun read for a hump day.
