The post Arts & Life Reviews: Laughing, cringing at classic ‘The Breakfast Club’ first appeared on The Baylor Lariat.]]> By Arden Berry | Arts & Life Editor For Arts & Life Reviews this week, we received a classic recommendation: “The Breakfast Club.” It’s a quintessential John Hughes film from 1985 and was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2016, so it seemed an appropriate watch over 40 years later. The movie opens with the classic “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds alongside the opening credits listed in big gold letters over a dark background. Following this introduction, a montage of various areas in the school sets the scene. The theme of stereotypes is clear from the way the characters’ roles are introduced before we even know their names. Brian Johnson is a brain, Andy Clark is an athlete, Allison Reynolds is a basket case, Claire Standish is a princess and John Bender is a criminal. We learn more about each character from the way they get dropped off for Saturday detention, their initial dialogue (or, in Allison’s case, lack thereof) and their actions throughout. Because they fit such different roles, the characters clash. Bender antagonizes Claire because of her high status, Andy’s adversarial nature leads to him taking Bender on, the group mostly ignores Brian or puts him down and Allison sits in the back corner making strange sounds and motions. Despite their interpersonal conflict, the group bands together when it comes to the man holding them there: Mr. Vernon. The group defends Bender each time Mr. Vernon tries to catch him in the act. The film is campy but iconic, filled with classic montages, silly scenes and a whole lot of yelling. The best parts of the movie come when the yelling stops and the characters are just absorbed in their own worlds. For example, at lunch time, Claire takes out her fancy sushi, Andy methodically pulls out his comically repetitive lunch and Allison is slinging food and putting Pixie Stix powder on a sandwich. And the montages are classic, especially the dance scene to “We Are Not Alone” by Karla DeVito. The movie takes you back to a different time, and I don’t just mean the ‘80s. It’s high school. All the pressure on these teenagers from their parents, teachers and peers. It’s claustrophobic, hormonal and everything is life or death. But the real emotional core of the movie is its characters. This is especially apparent as the pieces start to click together throughout the movie, as we discover why the characters are the way they are and why they are in detention in the first place. Allison is a “basket case” because her parents ignore her and she longs for attention. Claire is a pawn in her parents’ adversarial relationship and subject to peer pressure. Andy wants to impress his father but loses his own moral code and personhood in doing so. Brian’s self-worth is reliant upon his grades, and his parents place pressure on him to succeed. Bender is erratic, but he’s mainly a teenager completely messed up by his abusive father, and he’s not receiving proper support from school administrators. The acting in the film is great, especially when coupled with the camerawork. The close focus on the character’s faces while they yell, laugh or cry draws the viewer in and makes them want to understand who the characters are. Of course, the movie has its flaws. Bender creeped me out from the get-go, especially when it came to Claire. He walks in not even knowing her name and is already hitting on her doggedly, and the scene where he’s under the desk is especially unsettling. That sort of harassment is not the type you want to encourage with a happy ending. Additionally, Claire didn’t have to tell the group anything, and the general obsession with her private life felt uncomfortable. In summary, the movie is a classic for a reason. You go in seeing these characters for who they have been labeled as, but you keep watching to see what is below the surface, and you are rewarded for your time with heartwarming character development. For college students months or years out from graduating high school, it’s also a reminder of the world we left behind. In her final two weeks, which she spent with her beloved sons, grandchildren, husband, and closest friends, she did not ever lose her love of life, but she did turn her attention to her next great adventure. She made clear that, far from being afraid, after a lifetime spent equally fascinated by the scientific as by the mystical, she was excited to be on the cusp of discovering the ultimate mystery. Amanda lived this life to the fullest and she left satisfied that what she cared about most – her family and her vision for the future – will continue to thrive. Unfortunately, however, the treatment has not worked and as a result I have shifted my focus to spending more precious time with my family and friends. It is 60 years since I first tried LSD and discovered the extraordinary potential psychedelics have to help individuals and society. It struck me then that these were a “gift of the gods” that could expand one’s vision and understanding of reality. And what an exciting journey I have been on ever since! I feel immeasurable gratitude towards all the people who have inspired me, collaborated with me, and supported me up the long and winding path that has slowly led us all to today’s psychedelic renaissance. Looking back, I am filled with a tremendous sense of satisfaction about what we have all achieved together. The taboo has been broken. Science, medicine, and society are returning to psychedelics as invaluable tools for human health and flourishing. Looking forward, I am filled with hope that, more than ever and despite the seeming turmoil all around us, there are legions of people committed to take this vision forward with compassion and integrity. After decades of using art and political campaigns, I had come to realise that Science was the best way to overcome the taboo and break through the oppressive wall of the War on Drugs. For several years, our work at the Beckley Foundation was thought of as fringe and dangerous, not to be taken seriously. But in time, the data we produced spoke for itself. Now, after all this time, public opinion of psychedelics and altered states of consciousness is at an all-time high in our culture. We have witnessed significant strides in drug policy reform across multiple continents, including decriminalisation, legalisation, and medicalisation. Just recently, the UN officially shifted its stance towards harm reduction and human rights-based drug policies, and away from prohibitionist criminalisation. Still humanity faces the heavy costs of war, the ever-growing mental health epidemic, environmental disasters, and economic struggles. We know that psychedelics have the potential to help us heal at least some of humanity’s traumas and help guide us towards a better future. Thus, it’s vital that we fast forward our progress despite the remaining challenges and bureaucratic obstacles. Cutting-edge research is essential to break the enduring taboos that hinder our progress. I am therefore excited to be nearing a new era for the Beckley Foundation. As some of you may know, I have, over the last year or two, been developing the Double-Headed Research Programme, which focuses particularly on LSD, in macro- and micro- doses. This is some of the most cutting-edge research I have ever conceived, exploring the underlying mechanisms of the psychedelics and the mystical experience, as well as their potential to enhance cognitive function, restore mental health and help alleviate problems associated with aging, such as the decline of cerebral circulation and production of brain energy. Conducted with scientists from top universities around the world, the programme will investigate LSD in both macro- and micro- doses, and explore the realms of mechanistic, clinical and observational research. We believe this is the most ambitious research programme into LSD yet conceived.Long ago, I promised Albert Hoffmann, that for his 100th birthday present, I would bring his ‘problem child’ back into civilised society. But sadly, I failed because of unexpected taboos… as the saying goes: “the gods never tell the time“. But hopefully, now, this programme will help make it happen by exposing the incredible potential of LSD at so many different levels. By utilising the most advanced neuroimaging technologies, we will shine new light on many of the mechanisms involved, from the most transformative psychedelic experiences, to the most minute details of LSD’s effect on the microvascular system.Beyond mechanisms, we will be conducting clinical trials into the effect of LSD microdosing on a variety of indications which have not yet been studied, opening up the possibility of psychedelics being used as a powerful tool for healthy ageing and a more connected living for neurodivergent people.We are hopeful that at least three of the studies in the Programme will be launched in the first quarter of 2024.To bring this research to fruition, we have partnered with incredible new collaborators from world leading universities, and we look forward to giving more details in the New Year.We would like to give many thanks to our supporters, who make this work possible.
