Ahmed Alani Recent content on Ahmed Alani Hugo -- gohugo.io en-us Mon, 18 Sep 2017 15:07:00 -0500 Moya, Decodable, and RxSwift Bindings Mon, 18 Sep 2017 15:07:00 -0500
If your application integrates with a REST API, one of the first things you’ll implement is a network abstraction and serialization layer. Moya and Decodable are examples of libraries that make this dead simple for Swift / iOS. You <a href="; target="_blank">don’t want to repeat the same boilerplate code accessing each resource, so let’s create generic extensions that will make our life easier.

Moya and Decodable

<a href="; target="_blank">Moya is a thin facade around the Alamofire HTTP client. Instead of writing
Alamofire.request("(userId)")
and managing parameters, paths, encoding, etc., we can implement <a href="; target="_blank">Moya’s protocol and access an endpoint via enum:
MoyaProvider<MyApi>().request(.getOrders(userId))
. Not only does this keep our API configuration encapsulated and consistent, but it’s much easier to read. The API call returns a
Moya.Response
, which ultimately needs to be converted into a model.

<a href="; target="_blank">Decodable is an object mapping library that handles JSON serialization and deserialization into Swift objects. Mappings are specified as extensions on models and–once specified–deserialization is a simple call to the
decode
extension:
let orders = try [Order].decode(json)
.

Even in the simplest case of making a request and mapping a response, we want to avoid writing the above code for every single resource we interact with. Here’s a generic extension that will handle mapping for us against any response; all we need to provide is the type information:

public extension Moya.Response { public func map<T: Decodable>(_ type: T.Type) throws -> T { return try type.decode(try self.mapJSON()) } public func map<T: Decodable>(_ type: [T.Type]) throws -> [T] { return try Array<T>.decode(try self.mapJSON()) } }

Here we see two
map
methods, the first for returning a single mapped object and second for an array of objects.

The
self.mapJSON()
call is just a Moya extension that will convert a Response to JSON using
JSONSerialization.jsonObject
. Feel free to use your own serialization code.

The net result is the API calls are now fluent, succinct, and readable for all resources:

internal func getOrders(userId: String) throws -> [Orders] { return provider.request(.getOrders(userId)) .map([Orders.self]) }

RxSwift-ifying our Code

If you use <a href="; target="_blank">RxSwift and want to utilize the above extensions in an Observable chain, we can employ the same strategy with the
flatMap
and
just
operators:

public extension ObservableType where E == Moya.Response { public func map<T: Decodable>(_ type: T.Type) -> Observable<T> { return flatMap { (response : Response) -> Observable<T> in return Observable.just(try response.map(type)) } } public func map<T: Decodable>(_ type: [T.Type]) -> Observable<[T]> { return flatMap { (response : Response) -> Observable<[T]> in return Observable.just(try response.map(type)) } } }

The reactive code is now just as clean and easy to read as the non-reactive code:

provider.rx.request(.getOrders(userId)) .map([Orders.self]) .subscribe { orders in // Handle orders ... }

Improvements

As an exercise, I suggest you consider these improvements for a “real” implementations:

Utilize ViewModels. Naturally, I’ll be perpetuating the hype train for both with my blog. Let’s run Hugo in a Docker container, generate my website, and host it using Amazon S3.

Why Hugo?

If I want to host a blog using a platform like Wordpress, I need to provision, maintain, and (most importantly) pay for a LAMP stack just to get started. Don’t get me wrong, I like Wordpress and I’ve hosted sites with it in the past. It comes with a rich set of features like post scheduling, WYSYWIG editors, extensive plugins, and so on. However, for my personal blog that’s entirely too much work. Static site generators like Hugo follow a different model. I download a website template, write a post in Markdown, then Hugo renders my content into a full HTML. Now I can host my site anywhere and all I need to worry about are bandwidth fees.

<img src=";
Hugo comes with <a href="; target="_blank">several pre-built binaries that allow you to run it out of the box on most OS’s. Sadly, extra features like syntax highlighting requires <a href="; target="_blank">installing additional dependencies to get up and running. I’m lazy, so memorizing OS-specific commands for a project is an immediate no-go. Which version of Python do I install? Which packages do I download with pip? Let’s use Docker containers to run Hugo with batteries included.

Docker to the rescue

Using Docker, we can create a tiny sandboxed environment—a container—that bundles everything we need to run Hugo. Containers can include almost anything, such as a filesystem, OS binaries, the Hugo binary, and additional dependencies for extra features. This is basically static linking on steroids. I no longer have to remember custom install instructions per machine to get the full Hugo experience. I just download the Docker image and I’m ready to go. Note that Docker is supported by <a href="; target="_blank">several operating systems.

<img src=";

Run Hugo with Docker to build our site

Images for containers can be shared, which means that once a Hugo image is defined, anyone with Docker installed can download and run it. Let’s grab Hugo from the public image I <a href="; target="_blank">uploaded to Docker Hub.

$ docker pull alani/hugo

Now that we have an image for Hugo, we can run a container with it and use Hugo to create a new site.

$ mkdir ahmedalani.com $ cd ahmedalani.com $ docker run --rm -v `pwd`:/src alani/hugo new site .

Breaking down the command quickly:

docker run --rm
- Run a temporary container. Try to build and use lean images and, at the end of the day, remember that this is just another tool in your belt.

I support the current Director, Peter Richardson. Our daughter has enjoyed the Atlantic Highland's summer rec program for the past two years. During this time she not only got to spend time and play with her friends but was also introduced to new games, sports, children and activities that she otherwise would not have been exposed to.

After recently talking to other parents in town about the program we discovered that much of what the program is today is due to Peter's efforts. We hope his leadership and accomplishments are recognized by the committee and that Peter is the person to direct this important program. My wife and I both look back fondly on our summers spent at summer camp and having gotten to know Peter over the past two years through summer rec, youth hockey and his employment at the local dining establishment, Bella's, we are confident that our daughter is being given the opportunity to create these same wonderful memories.

There's a Recreation Committee meeting tomorrow (Valentine's Day) at 8:00 pm. If you support Peter but can't make the meeting due to, uh, other committments, please email the Borough Administrator and show your support.2008/02/support-peter-richardson.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9755764.post-843849363030829788Wed, 16 Jan 2008 04:37:00 +00002008-01-16T00:15:11.326-05:00BellasDaveGorky RisesMusicThe Bella's Beat, 12/07<img src="; />

12/7/07 Dave Oberacker from <a href=" Homer boogied on down from Hoboken to jam at Bella's. Rast III at his swearing in ceremony on 1/1/08. In a, uh, nut shell, I find the speech ridiculous. In fact, there's really just too much ridiculousness for my brain to process. I trust Rast will provide his recommendation on how to fix Social Security at the next town Council meeting. As an <a href=" hunter and not-so-avid fan of Baby Boomers (see below) I can only imagine what he might propose. If you were born between the years 1946 to 1964 you might want to consider relocating somewhere far away from Atlantic Highlands. Remember though that Rast is a <a href=" dick so he'll probably end up tracking you down anyway. And then hunting you for sport. Hippie-hunting season is officially open!

SPEECH 1 JAN 2008 AT
SWEARING IN OF FREDERICK J. RAST III

Today should be a very happy and joyous day for my running mates and me. However, as I stand here in front of my beloved family, close friends and fellow residents of Atlantic Highlands, I feel troubled and afraid of the future!

As I look into the beautiful faces of my three grandchildren, I wonder what is in store for them in the future? We live in an environment where so many of our USA citizens, continually do everything they can to detract from our country’s greatness. They constantly find fault in the USA and praise the rest of the world. They blame us, “The USA” for the world’s ills, when the truth is, that we as Americans do more for the rest of humanity, than any other nation.

The United States I grew up in, does not exist anymore! It started to decline in the 60’s, when people who believed more in their personal pleasures and free life style, made it fashionable to hold up Hollywood and Sports figures, as well as some foreign leaders, as their Heroes. They continually condemned and criticized our Military, Law Enforcement and Our Country as a whole. Unfortunately not all USA Detractors from that tragic point in History, changed as they got older! Many became members of our Government and some became Elected Officials. Many of them encourage our youth to continue to run down our nation. Many trained or at least set examples to their children, that the only thing important in life is to be rich and famous. They put their pleasures first, before their Country and Community. They look down on People who are religious, who are community volunteers and those who are of middle or lower income.
When I see the “Political Correct Crowd” making people uncomfortable who wish someone Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukah, it sickens me!

When groups such as “ACLU” push their twisted anti-American agenda into our society, I get outraged! I think it is time for people to realize that we are heading down a very steep, slippery, hill. If we don’t act now and don’t defy the “Political Correct Crowd” immediately, we are doomed as a nation!

In my opinion, every citizen should give back to his or her community as a volunteer, not for money or glory but for our survival!

When a small group complains just because a town may endorse or support a traditional Christian, Jewish, Muslim or any other religious event, we cannot “Bow” to their pressure! We must stand strong and say it is time for the majority to win, not the minority!

All good citizens are tolerant of others in every way. Giving someone a smile and wishing them a Happy Hanukah or Merry Christmas during a religious holiday cannot be wrong! It is an expression of love and well wishing from one person to another, even if its not that persons religious holiday.

Elected officials who are of the “Me First Mindset” disgust me when they make new laws just so they can get their names in the papers or their faces on TV. There are more senseless laws made just for personal recognition of lawmakers, than legitimate ones!

A great example is the law about using a handheld cell phone while driving. It is not a violation to put on make up, read, eat or tend to screaming children while driving. But it is to hold a cell phone.

Careless and Reckless driving violations relate to the actions of the driver, they have existed for well over 75 years. We needed no new law!

Today’s “Political Correct Extremists”, have taught people to blame anything but one’s own actions for their conduct!.

When a person takes a gun and kills people, it is not their fault, it is the gun manufacturers fault, for making the gun. Someone puts hot coffee between their legs while driving and gets burned, it is not their fault. It is the company who sold the hot coffee to them.

Global warming extremists within the last several weeks announced that they think there will be a great flood due to the Earth’s polar ice cap melting, possibly within 10 years! Some people are making large sums of money preaching doom and gloom, dealing with Environmental issues. They don’t mention however, that the Polar Ice caps on “Mars” are also melting at the same rate as the Earth’s. Why don’t they demand SUV’s stop being used on Mars or could it be the elliptical patterns of Orbit of the Earth, Mars and other planets are nearer the Sun at this point in time?

Another thing the “Global Warming Extremists” have said is that people of the Jewish faith, should not light candles on the menorah. In Australia they want to “genetically alter” cows, pigs and sheep so when they FLATULANTE there is no methane gas coming out, just like kangaroos. I wonder how much taxpayer’s money was given to capture kangaroo FLATULANCE, to check for methane?

Also one of these groups said if you have over 2 kids, there should be a “carbon dioxide tax” levied upon the parents, to cover for the additional carbon dioxide that the kids will expel over their lifetime. Of course we as humans expel Carbon Dioxide as part of our breathing process.
Please someone get a Big Net!

We all agree that we should protect the environment, man should not pollute and we should do everything we can to save our Natural resources.

The clear thinking majority, has to speak up and the madness must stop!

This is the real reason I ran for mayor. I want to bring back common sense to government. I have no desire to get publicity, I will never be on an ego trip! I am Fred Rast, a local town boy, who was elected mayor. I don’t expect I will always make the right decisions, so you my fellow citizens, don’t expect it of me!

I guarantee that I am going to make some people unhappy about the way I provide leadership, as your mayor. I also pledge that I will accomplish things that have to be done! I will always, have the best interest of the majority of our people at the forefront of every decision I make, popular or unpopular!

I will not personally and will not stand for other elected officials, to micro-manage the operations of our town. The professionals we have, at all levels of our town’s operation, know better than I do, how to do their job. We as elected officials are here to make sure they do their job in an honest, economical and very town sensitive, manner!

We are now a Mayor and Council for all citizens, no longer representing a political party but representing all citizens. I hope all of you work with me and our council, give us time and we will keep our town solvent and a wonderful place to live.

Our town, unfortunately gained the reputation in recent years, as being one of the most unfriendly towns in the area. Unfriendly, towards Investors, Small Builders, Real Estate People, General Contractors and Homeowners trying to improve their property! Complaints range from extremely expensive permits, an over abundance of red tape, long delays and unreasonable thinking committees, who openly show their lack of willingness towards construction, expansion and improvements in our town!

Complaints about Board Members badgering and treating people as though they were criminals who appear before them have been occurring for years. I intend to make sure all members of committees, boards and utilities who have expressed attitudes unfriendly to people who come before them, based on their prejudices or preferences understand this will not be tolerated. Some individuals openly have spoken against projects and applications long before they even heard all the testimony and voted on applications. Members of Boards must have an open mind, be fair, honest, nonpartisan and never allow their personal preferences to prejudice their decisions.

The Council and I, will work very hard to make Atlantic Highlands a Destination place that will attract and keep businesses in our town, as well as bring customers to those businesses. We will do everything in our power to enhance First Ave and Home-based businesses, so that they can provide more local jobs, continue to pay taxes and provide services locally, so that our residents need not travel, to get life’s needs. Remember if commercial rateables are successful, it reduces the property taxes homeowners have to pay!

We will continue to work hard on the remediation of our sewer system, to stop infiltration of ground water. This will drop costs of processing sewerage, thus reducing our Sewer Rates.
We will insist on private clean up of contaminated property by owners or responsible parties in town!

We will ensure that all of our publicly owned parks are maintained and kept available for maximum use by our citizens.

We will work very hard to build a badly needed public library in our town, in the most economical way possible.

We will spend our tax dollars on necessary things that will protect and enhance the lives of all our citizens.

We will always respect and protect the rights of Private Property Owners, with a rare exception if the owners actions create a direct threat to their neighbors or if the owners actions, are in violation of our laws.

We are going to conduct a complete review of our ordinances, rules and regulations to update where necessary, to amend where needed so that everyone can understand them and to shorten the Bureaucratic delays such ordinances, rules, and regulations have been found to cause!

As I said earlier “In my opinion, every citizen should give back to his or her community as a volunteer, not for money or glory but for our survival”. Therefore I have created a Senior Citizen committee headed by two of our former mayors, who truly love our town, Mayor Helen Marchetti and Mayor Robert Schoeffling. They will co-chair this committee of volunteer Senior Citizens, over 65 years old, who will be asked to help us with projects needed by the Borough in an effort to keep our town’s expenses down. We will ask experienced, community loving seniors, to become directly involved in the operation of our town. The co-chairs will identify a cadre of seniors, who’s experience in various areas of expertise, can again be used for the benefit of our community. With their help, often we can save or reduce the cost of outside “experts” or professionals wherever possible. Thus saving all of us, Tax Dollars.

I have also created a new committee, headed by former Councilwoman Kim Spatola, to coordinate efforts towards the promotion of Atlantic Highlands through beautification projects, advertising projects and a cooperative effort between the Chamber of Commerce, Arts Council and other groups who have our community at heart!

I promise that I will openly explain to those citizens interested, every project that I will be implementing and/or supporting over my tenure as Mayor.

Atlantic Highlands must remain a town where anyone, of any race, creed, religion, national origin or personal beliefs, can walk our streets safely and unmolested. The only people who should fear our town’s streets, must be people who wish to do our citizens harm! Towards such goals I will be encouraging Public Safety projects as needed!

Thank you all for coming today, God Bless you, Your Families Our Town and Our Great Nation!2008/01/ah-mayor-fred-rast-predicts-doom-and.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9755764.post-6733694405747160849Mon, 07 Jan 2008 03:00:00 +00002008-01-07T00:28:07.011-05:00SeastreakLocal Effort Being Made to Buy N.Y. Ferry Service CatamaransEd. note: some contents of the original <a href=" Park Press article have been, uh, updated. The original article can be purchased <a href=" />
By MICHAEL L. DIAMOND
BUSINESS WRITER
Asbury Park Press
December 18, 2007

A Wall Street executive said Monday he is working with local investors to buy four high-speed catamarans used by SeaStreak America Inc. to ferry passengers from Monmouth County to New York.

The possible bid from a group led by Michael Gooch, a Rumson resident and chief executive officer of the brokerage service GFI Group Inc., could ease fears that the boats will be sold to Trinidad and Tobago as part of a bankruptcy reorganization.

"Myself and other investors are not really, frankly, interested in being ferry operators," Gooch said. "We're just interested in seeing a quality ferry service continue."

The move comes as the future of the ferry service remains in doubt. SeaStreak's parent company, Sea Containers Ltd. of Bermuda, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy more than a year ago after it became burdened by debt. Among the creditors are unnamed banks which own the high-speed boats and charter them to SeaStreak.

Reports surfaced last summer that Trinidad & Tobago was prepared to offer $30 million for the boats to begin ferry service in the Caribbean nation.

Some 2,000 people a day take the boats — 400-passenger vessels that travel more than 40 mph — from Highlands and Atlantic Highlands to Manhattan, and the possibility of losing the service has unnerved them. Commuters say the ferry ride gets them to New York in about half the time it would take if they drove or took the train. Many of them said it is a major reason they live in Monmouth County . They worry that replacement boats would be much slower.

Losing the boats "would be an absolute disaster," said Robert Picard, who takes the ferry each day to get from his Rumson home to his office in midtown Manhattan. "There are no boats around that could replace those four."

In addition to working with investors, Gooch said he has talked to a ferry operator about taking over the service and investing in it. He declined to name the operator. But he said he is close to making what he called a "preliminary, nonbinding bid."

Gooch said there is little to prevent the vessels from being sold to Trinidad and Tobago — or to any other buyer. So local legislators have asked government agencies to intervene if the vessels are sold to a foreign country — if only to give Gooch and his investment group more time.

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, D-N.J. asked the U.S. Maritime Administration to block the vessels' sale to a foreign country. But Shannon Russell, a spokeswoman for the agency, said, the agency only regulates the sale of U.S. vessels that weigh more than 1,000 gross tons, which is bigger than the SeaStreak boats."

There's nothing that the Maritime Administration can do to stop this sale if, in fact, it happens," Russell said. "It's not against the law. It's nothing that we regulate."

In New Jersey, state Sen. Joseph M. Kyrillos Jr., Assemblywoman Jennifer Beck and Assemblyman Sean Kean, all R-Monmouth, last week wrote Attorney General Anne Milgram and asked her to investigate legal grounds to block the vessels' sale to a foreign country.

Lee Moore, a spokesman for the Attorney General's Office, said attorneys are reviewing the letter.

Gooch said other hurdles remain. Namely, the local investment group won't pay more than what the boats are worth, making it unlikely that it would get involved in a bidding war that would make it a money-losing venture.

The group approached a sample of the ridership to survey their thoughts on potential new services to increase revenues. Services mentioned in the survey include additional food and beverage offerings such as pork roll, egg and cheese sandwiches for the morning commutes and selections of gourmet hot dogs, beers on tap from local brewers and single malt scotch tasting events on the afternoon and evening routes.

Vessel naming rights are currently being negotiated should the group move forward with the purchase. Fantasies, a gentlemen's club in Keyport, is considering sponsorship of the current SeaStreak New Jersey. Gooch said other local business being approached include McLoone's Restaurant Group and Ray Cantena Motors.

Willie Graber, a spokesperson for Fantasies' management would not disclose how much his clients have bid for the vessel's naming rights but joked that the sponsorship would be paid for with singles. "We're still negotiating so there's really nothing to comment on at this time. SeaStreak's clientele ride in the lap of luxury, we want to put our brand in their laps," Graber said.

Gooch summed up the group's mentality at this point, "individuals are willing to put up money to save the service, but not lose money. They want to know if they did invest, it would be professionally run and the economics make sense. We're trying to put that together."2008/01/note-from-blogger.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9755764.post-113527587476786991Thu, 22 Dec 2005 18:22:00 +00002005-12-22T13:24:34.783-05:00Merry Chirstmas!Happy Holidays everybody. However, Dean doesn't name who's spreading these rumors. Why not? Is it because this rumor is a rumor itself? Is it that he read this post and now I'm an "otherwise reliable AH Dem(s)" now turned to the Dark Side? Is Dean serious when he states that politically motivated rumors (invented by Democrats) are beginning to fly and that politics are turning ugly (damn Democrats again) now that election season has started? Anyone who reads the <a href="; and its <a href="; knows that politically motivated rumors and ugly politics are what keep us reading the soap opera that is our town politics year in and year out and that Dean himself actively participates.

For the record, Mayor Donoghue wrote a letter to the editor of the Bayshore Courier stating that he's going to work to see that the McConnell property can be used for public green space. Councilman Carl Nolan has also gone on record saying he is working toward stopping any kind of development on our shores. I'm yet to read or hear Archibald and the Republicans come out against this development. He's used the issue to try to paint the Democrats as being lazy and incompetent, yet he's been on the Council for nine years, has been involved in the town's Master Plan, has worked to protect other green space in town and yet no word on this property. Thank you to Associate Editor Jackie Corley for providing a copy.

To The Editor:

The proposal by Hovnanian to build 42 condominium units on the Atlantic Highlands waterfront is an ill-conceived idea worthy of opposition by all officials and residents.

I am absolutely against this high-density housing proposal and will fight it in any way possible. It is my belief that under no circumstances should any developer be allowed to build any more homes on this sensitive land than the R-1 zone allows. Anything more would add considerably to area traffic and safety concerns, increase school enrollment and taxpayer costs and further burden the water and sewer systems.

As a matter of fact, I think it would be wise for the borough to look into the possibility and implications of acquiring the land for public use, taking advantage of Green Acres and other available funding. The McConnell tract is, after all, one of our last water front properties and its preservation would be a marvelous legacy to the people of our community.

But whatever use evolves, I believe Hovnanian has evidenced a lack of concern for the people of the borough by pursuing this proposal, now in the hands of the Planning Board, despite the clearly expressed views of both residents and borough officials.

More than that, they have challenged the borough's right to afford able housing certification under Mount Laurel II, an action that will cost the borough considerable taxpayers' money to contest. Therefore, let me make it clear that I oppose this proposed development and I have grave questions about whether Hovnanian has any other goal than making money, despite the impact on the shore and its residents.

Peter E. To which he said something to the effect of, "they can have their parade in Wanaque." Just a Jersey rookie when I read about the incident, I read the line as a parade in wä-nä-kē -- which sounded like a lot of fun to me. Wanakie eventually evolved into wä-nōō-kē so as to compliment Jay's line "schnookie nookie!" in <a href="; . Hence, Fridays (fun) = Wanookie. Now you know. Someday perhaps I'll tell you all about the Extremely Raritan Bridge and Say You, Say Me, Sayreville... Naturally.

Hey somebody's gotta have some fun 'round here. Sure as hell ain't no fun at Borough Hall. We gots ourselves a battle royale. And it's only August. The November Council election is still 74 days away but somebody tell Mean Gene Okerlund to git his monkey suit on and git on down here to start the show. In addition to the Borough Attorney circus there's another carnival in town called the McConnell Property. And like always, it's a game of he said, she said, leaving residents like me scratching their heads.

Councilman Jack Archibald (who is gearing up for his November campaign) supports the redevelopment of the McConnell Property by K. Hovnanian. Archibald's latest Body Politic column in the Atlantic Highlands Herald is entitled <a href=" PROPERTY SHOULD BE CLEANED UP BEFORE SALE TO HOVNANIAN (fait accompli, no?). Archibald believes if the borough forced New Jersey Natural Gas to clean up the site then Hovnanian would only need to build single-family homes and not multi-family units to subsidize the cost of the environmental clean-up. And who gets the blame for not forcing a cleanup of the property - the Donoghue Administration of course, who according to Archibald, have "neglected the issue for the past year."

However, Councilwoman Stephanie Ladiana writes, <a href=" the last 9 years he [Archibald] seems to have intentionally ignored this property. Now that it’s convenient for him to take a position on it, he does. The only problem he’s constantly contradicting himself."

Looks to me like Archibald is on the developer's side on this one. He worked to designate the area for residential development, left the area off of the Borough's Open Space and Recreation Plan and as such does not agree with a majority of residents.

So, enquiring minds want to know - clean or dirty? Development or green space? Oh and there's this whole thing about a lawsuit about Atlantic Highlands not providing affordable housing units which could somehow provide a loophole for Hovnanian to get in. I hope the Democratic candidates spell out a clear point-of-view on this issue and I hope that view is that this property should become waterfront green space for all residents to enjoy.

<a href="; pointed me to <a href=" article from the Wall Street Journal that takes another look at how the <a href=" Court's decision in the case of Kelo vs. City of New London could affect homeowners in Long Branch who continue to fight to keep their homes from being dozed for luxury condos.

And since it's Wanookie let's have some fun:

<a href=" Scientists Refute Gravity With New "Intelligent Falling" Theory

Mary Had a Little Lamb. His website, <a href=" Trick Pony, offers a collection of humor pieces written by Ben and assorted imaginary collaborators. Ben's list of "<a href=" Euphemisms That Won't Catch On" was recently published in the book <a href=" in Darkness By Troubled Americans: The Best of McSweeney's Humor Category. I recently corresponded with Ben via an interpreter using electronic mail; here's what we talked about.

Is it true you look like a mustached Jonathon Taylor Thomas? Thus the Mohwak, books, Tevas and toilet.

Are you funny because you really hurt inside?
I build a wall to keep people on the other side, but they keep waiting. And picking.

What is your caffeinated beverage of choice and have you ever stolen from someone you love to get a fix?
Caffeine keeps me up, so I avoid it. I once had a Pepsi at three P.M and couldn't fall asleep until one in the morning.

Describe The Catcher in the Rye in five words:
J.D. Salinger's only good book.

Are you one wild and crazy guy?
I give Dan Ackroyd and Steve Martin a run for their money.

Rt. 35 or Rt. 36 – which is one is da bomb?
Choosing between the two is like choosing between one's own children. I don't want to contribute to global over-population, so I don't have to worry about that.

Most people ride horses or in cars – what's your ride?
I drive a class III Armored Vehicle - a 1990 Cutlass Sierra. Watch out on the road because I will not hesitate to crush you.

Name two people if given the chance you would whisper sweet nothings in their ear and what would you say?
Whispering makes me uneasy and I wouldn't want to infringe on someone's comfort zone, so I wouldn't partake in such an activity.2005/06/interview-with-kharakh.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9755764.post-111928975600527614Tue, 21 Jun 2005 16:30:00 +00002005-06-21T11:39:05.846-05:00Hello, Hello AgainYikes, it's been a long time. I hope there are some people out there still reading the AH Muse. I suppose if worse comes to worst I could manufacture a few controversies to get some attention. It works for some AH republicans...

Congrats to local humorist <a href=" Kharakh (of Middletown I think) on the publishing of a list he submitted to the <a href=" website. Ben's list, <a href=" Euphemisms That Won't Catch On," was included in the book <a href=" in Darkness by Troubled Americans: The Best of McSweeney's Humor Category. I've been slacking off on putting together an interview with Ben but hope to share some of our email exchanges soon. For those of you who don't know, McSweeney's is a big deal. At least to me.

<a href=" New Jersey Dept. of Transportation will be building a <strike>suicide lane</strike> bike path along the northbound and southbound sides of Route 36, extending the Henry Hudson Bike Trail from Atlantic Highlands to Sandy Hook. This better not be the completion of the decades-in-the- making Bayshore bike trail. Nuts! The idea of the bike path is for me and my family to be able to enjoy a leisurely ride to the beach, not get run off the road by cars speeding by at 60 mph and throwing cans of Mountain Dew out the window.

As the Bike Trail currently ends around Route 36 and Ave. D, I had to put my legs to work last Friday when I hooked up my daughter's trailer to my mountain bike and climbed the "highland" in Atlantic Highlands to get to the bay beach in Highlands. While the exhilaration of feeling like Lance Armstrong climbing the Pyrenees was fun my legs felt like they were made of chum chutney by the time I got home. If they don't finish the bike path by next summer my <strike>little</strike> not-so-little girl ain't gettin' any more free rides to the beach.

(PS - Gatorade is bunk - Long Trail Ale will replace any lost electrolytes and get you back on your feet in no time, especially if your BOF (Beer Only Fridge - thank you <a href=". Beerman) is about 15 feet away from your lounge chair.

Please Mister Beerman/look and see/oh yeah
If there's a summer wheat beer in your fridge for me
Please, please Mister Beerman
Why's it takin' such a long time/oh yeah
For me to ride that bike trail of mine

Anyway. So apparently there's yet another "scandal" at Borough Hall (gasp gasp!). <a href=" Borough appointed a new Chief Financial Officer - Dawn L. Babcock - and, as always, our own <a href="; and <a href="; (registration required) are on the case. This episode leads us down a trail of conspiracies and cover-ups and takes us to the spooky swamplands of Rutherford, NJ. You know weird stuff goes on there near dem Meadowlands - people with green faces, giants, devils, little men in silk. But it gets weirder. The new CFO was employed by Rutherford for only two-and-a-half months. THE HORROR!!

Thus our latest controversy. When the Council came out of an executive session in which the offer to Ms. Babcock was debated the people demanded to know who she was, where she worked, what she would be making, what her favorite pizza topping is and what dirt they could use to further the relentless assault on the dreaded Democratic Donoghue Regime. When <a href=" Ladiana refused to answer these questions all hell broke loose - though I did hear the Councilwoman said that the new CFO likes pineapple on her pizza, which is weirder still (and unconfirmed). And why didn't our elected official cave into the demands of the angry mob? Because she's a tyrant on a power binge? A mad scientist that likes to tie residents up (preferably midgets) and throw food bits at them? No, she didn't make any announcements or answer questions because the prospective job candidate had not officially accepted the Council's offer. Thus, nothing to talk to about. Ah, but plenty to write about on the Atlantic Highlands Herald Forums, beginning in the wee hours and <a href=" with phone calls to Ms. Babcok's former (then current) employer (which is how her former employer learned that Ms. Babcock would be resigning). Nice work folks! What if Ms. Babcock decided not to accept AH's offer? Now her employer knows she's interviewing. And not because she was working on her resume on company time or saying she was taking a long lunch to go on an interview or two or being just plain sloppy. No, a rabid pack of dogs had to chase down and manufacture a controversy.

Because that's how you get attention. Remind me to never apply for a job at Borough Hall.

Hey folks - buried in today's post is an allusion to an influential scientist who did strange things to midgets. Your neighborhood blogger will purchase you a cold brewski if you can name that scientist.2005/06/hello-hello-again.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9755764.post-111781872093307009Fri, 03 Jun 2005 21:00:00 +00002005-06-03T16:00:12.833-05:00Hee-haw?........Holy Sh%&!Have you heard about <a href=" black bear popping up all over Monmouth County this week?

The latest sighting happened sometime around 5 a.m. Thursday, when workers at Earle reported seeing the bear on the pier that extends into Sandy Hook Bay, said Nancy Eldridge, a spokeswoman for the military base.

No one is sure how the bear found its way onto the base and out to the pier, which is off limits to the public.

"It's restricted to military personnel, so I guess we could give him a $500 fine for trespassing," Eldridge joked Thursday afternoon. "We do have wildlife on the base, but this is the first time I can remember hearing about a bear on the base."

Well I'm really happy that Ms. Eldridge can keep her sense of humor about all of this but let's get back to the part about no one knowing how the bear got onto the base and how it's like restricted and all. I don't think they're exactly transporting donuts out of Earle. farmblog towards actually sustainable farming in Ahualoa Tue, 02 Apr 2024 05:00:33 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Unloading a biochar pit with a vacuum /2024/03/unloading-a-biochar-pit-with-a-vacuum/ /2024/03/unloading-a-biochar-pit-with-a-vacuum/#respond Mon, 04 Mar 2024 03:06:14 +0000 Lots of people make small batches of biochar in kilns, retorts, rings and pits. To move the char, most people shovel it out. When your batches of char get bigger, unloading is a lot of time and energy. How to improve that? There are two main challenges: moving the char out of the kiln, and getting it to the desired size. One option for moving the char is to use a kiln vessel, off the ground, that can be tipped to pour its contents out. This isn’t an option for those of us using pits or rings, or much larger metal vessels. For these, the main options are shoveling the char out, or sucking it up with a large vacuum. It might be possible to find a grinder that you can shovel char directly into, which would grind it to the desired size (such as 1/2″-) without clogging or jamming or letting larger chunks through. It could then drop directly into the wheelbarrow, supersack or wherever you want the char to go. However, I have not yet found such a grinder to exist. Small shredders (leaf shredders, sink grinders) jam easily, have to be tended carefully, and are slow. Big hammer mills don’t readily jam, but pulverize the char to fine dust. In both cases, the moisture level has to be just right, or you get dust clouds (too dry) or a sticky slurry (too wet). One option, that accomplishes both moving and crushing, is mentioned in the following video, from a farm in 2013: “About scale, a better way to crush the char, well we operate on such a big scale that we can afford to use one of these, basically its a leaf vacuum, we jump in there and we vacuum it out, and it grinds it on the way out, and we capture it in those giant super sacks. We vacuum it through a chopper.” Further clarified, this farm uses a complete set of machinery: Bob Wells: “The unloader that we build for the retort that you are referring to is run on a 14 HP gas engine and it is basically a slightly overbuilt centrifugal fan/blower/vacuum. The biochar is sucked right through the stainless impeller and smashed as it goes through. It is immediately blown from there to a cyclone separator that drops the char into a container. There is also an adjustable water jet built into the housing of the blower just before the impeller,so that we can add just enough water to knock down the dust. It only takes 10 minutes to unload the retort. […] it doesn’t crush the biochar to a uniform or controlled particle size. That requires another step. We use a hopper fed trommel to sort out the size fractions. Any oversize particles go into a finger type crusher that gives us perfectly sized biochar” This sounds very powerful and convenient, but requires a long chain of equipment – huge vacuum, separator, water jet, hopper-fed trommel, finger-type crusher. Some of these can be bought (certainly large debris loaders exist, and cyclonic separators are common) but some parts have to be custom built, experimentation and welding is required, and the whole chain adds up to a major commitment of time and money – certainly tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. What can be done on a more moderate budget? Or closer to turnkey, instead of years of experimentation? I bought a powerful leaf blower, which can function as a vacuum, with a force of “up to 473 CFM” (Makita XBU04ZV, $276 on sale via Amazon.com, usually ~$400) and a cyclonic separator (Oneida Dust Deputy 2.5 Deluxe, $140 plus shipping). I took them to my kiln pit, and tried to suck up biochar. This is what I learned. Charcoal in pit -> hose -> separator -> vacuum. This kinda worked at first. The separator did a good job of separating, with the char getting sucked up the hose, then dropped by the separator into a bucket. However,It soon jammed, because large chunks got sucked up and stuck in the hose.It was fairly slow. Might work better with a more powerful vacuum.Lots of the chunks getting sucked up are bigger than desirable.Charcoal in pit -> sieve -> hose -> separator ->vacuum. This solved the problem of large chunks coming up the tube, but it was even slower, because I had to continuously move the hose with sieve around in the charpit. This was disappointing, because I had high hopes for this approach.Charcoal in pit -> hose -> vacuum -> bucket. This uses the vacuum’s own impeller to break up the char, and spit it out the back into a bucket. However,Again, the hose jams with larger chunks.It comes flying out the back at such high speed, it’s basically blowing out dust. The impeller is doing too good a job at breaking up the char. Maybe a large dust bag would work for catching the output without reducing airflow too much. To be fair to this Makita vacuum, it’s made to suck up leaves, and it expects to suck them up the included straight tube, so they’d be much less likely to get jammed. However, to use it that way, I’d have to wear the vacuum, aiming the straight tube down into the pit. That seemed too awkward, which is why I tried using a vacuum hose instead, only to find the curves in the hose jammed far too easily. These vacuum hoses are made for wet/dry shop vacs, which usually only suck up dust, not 1″ lumps of charcoal. In the video above with a farm using a vacuum, there are two key differences, their hose is much larger diameter (probably 8″ vs. 2.5″), and the suction is much higher (a 14 HP gas engine vs. the Makita’s motor which is probably ~1 HP). Things I could still try: Using a bigger hose. 4″ diameter hose is available and that matches the in/out ports of the Makita. It’s not a cheap experiment, though. It would also involve a bigger cyclonic separator, a 4″ is available for a few hundred bucks. I suspect it would work better and jam less, but still suffer from overall slow throughput.Using the straight hard tube, wearing the vacuum. I’m not optimistic about the ergonomic usability of that approach.Try a bigger vacuum – like a gas-powered debris loader. A good one costs at least $2k. A reasonable cost, if it works well, or an expensive experiment if it doesn’t.Give up on vacuums completely, and just shovel it out of the pit, into a hopper, where it drops through an appropriate grinder. The search for such a grinder continues. /2024/03/unloading-a-biochar-pit-with-a-vacuum/feed/ 0 Lithium Battery Tools: A Table /2023/04/lithium-battery-tools-a-table/ /2023/04/lithium-battery-tools-a-table/#respond Sun, 02 Apr 2023 16:53:00 +0000 /?p=718 Power tools are slowly moving from gas to battery, and dozens of companies are jumping in. Some are big general companies that have making battery tools for a long time (Makita, DeWalt) and some have traditionally made one gas-burning thing (like Toro for lawnmowers, Husqvarna for chainsaws) and now reluctantly, belatedly going electric. As they expand their product lines into each other’s turf, they are all on a collision course. The bad thing for consumers is that there is exactly ZERO standards for the lithium battery packs, although they are practically identical, every single vendor makes theirs incompatible with a slightly different plug. If there’s a tool you feel should be here, let me know and I’ll add it. You can see how some companies’ focus is construction, others landscaping, and some try to do it all There are good reasons for many of the gaps – a 24V battery wouldn’t make sense to power a riding mower, and a big 80V battery wouldn’t make sense for a hand-held drill. But, a lot of the gaps just represent where a company hasn’t managed to make one yet, or has decided not to compete there. You can see that powered wheelbarrows are rare, only Makita and Greenworks make them, and it’s possible that the Greenworks ones are discontinued. Also rare is being able to share your batteries between a riding mower and other tools, only Ego and Greenworks let you do that. Ryobi shares, but only with their lawnmower. Chainsaws are divided by motor power (under 1.5 kW, 1.5-2.5 kW, and 3.0 kW and up). As you saw in my blog post of last year, high-power battery chainsaws remain rare, only made by DeWalt, Stihl and Greenworks. Stihl’s MSA300 is finally available in the USA as of 2023, but still hard to find. Greenworks added a powerful saw on their 60V line (the CS60L810) which is an amazing deal, if you’re already on that platform. Overall, the Makita 18V and Dewalt 20/60V lines have the best coverage / largest number of tools for the low-to-mid power range, and Greenworks 60V has the best coverage in the mid-to-high power range. /2023/04/lithium-battery-tools-a-table/feed/ 0 Chainsaw Milling: What I’ve Learned /2022/09/chainsaw-milling-what-ive-learned/ /2022/09/chainsaw-milling-what-ive-learned/#comments Tue, 27 Sep 2022 22:23:53 +0000 I’ve spent a couple weeks researching, and this is what I’ve learned about milling your own wood with a chainsaw, and in particular a battery-powered chainsaw. Note that I have not actually done any milling yet, but after so much reading, searching, shopping and youtube-ing, I feel like I’ve learned enough to share and be useful. First of all, some people will dismiss it completely, saying that chainsaw milling is too tedious, too slow, too limited. They point out a proper bandsaw mill is more efficient, faster, better, etc. No doubt they are right, but many of us already own a chainsaw and want to mill, and don’t have thousands of dollars for a “real” mill, or just aren’t going to mill often enough to justify buying one. There are four kinds of chainsaw mill, from most serious/expensive to least serious/cheapest: “Alaskan” horizontal milling rigs, which attach to your chainsaw bar in two places“Alaskan small log” horizontal milling rig, which attaches in one place “Edging” mill rigs, which cut vertically with the saw in a fixed orientationCheap vertical rigs which slide down a 2×4 with the saw able to rotate Type 1: “Alaskan” Horizontal Mill The quality models are made in the USA by Granberg, and cost around $300. There are many Chinese imitations on Amazon which can cost more like $100 and look like this: By all accounts, this type of mill works well enough, as long as you have a powerful chainsaw, and are patient enough for the many steps, slow cutting, a lot of gas and chain sharpening, etc. Many people say you shouldn’t even attempt this with a battery chainsaw, because the saw isn’t powerful enough, but there is another major issue: bar length. I borrowed my neighbor’s 36″ Granberg rig, attached it to my battery saw with 18″ bar, and this is what it looked like: As you can see, this rig is just too big for the 14-18″ bar typical of a battery chainsaw, and worse, the metal parts that clamp onto the bar are as wide as the bar, which pinches the chain. By attaching in two places on an 18″ bar, there is less than 11″ of bar left to mill with: Type 2: The Granberg “Small Log” Mill (G777) It costs around $170-$270 depending on shipping and where you buy it. Surprisingly, there don’t seem to be Chinese knock-off versions of it (yet?) It’s specifically made for saws with short bars up to 20″, which means this is the one to use with a battery chainsaw. By clamping to the bar in just one place, it’s a little less stable, but you get much more of your bar as usable cutting length. Type 3: Vertical Granberg “Edging” Rig (G555B) This Granberg unit costs around $125-$200, again depending on shipping and where it’s purchased. There are a few Chinese knockoffs on Amazon from $75-$100, but they have very poor reviews. To use this mill, you lock the saw at a fixed angle (nearly vertical) and push it thru the log, along a metal track: As the name implies, Granberg suggests you use this to cut the edges off logs to make beams, not to cut slabs, altho with patience you totally could cut boards this way. Many online videos show real people successfully milling with this rig. Type 4: The Cheap Vertical Rigs Some say the original mill of this type was the “Haddon Lumbermaker”, others claim it was a Canadian “Quadra Beam Machine”. Regardless of origin, amazon.com is now full of dozens of nearly-identical models, all from China, and all with significant quality and usability issues. A typical unit looks like this: This is super simple, the rig slides down a 2×4 or 2×6, the clamp holds your bar for vertical milling, while allowing it to rotate, as you pull it down the log. They are very affordable, typically $30 but can range from $22-$38. The Chinese brand names range from generic to comical (ZeroPone, Kweetle, HVUE, Wood-CNL, YEFA, TTF, TAUSOM, AGS, SurmountWay, Farmertec, Zchoutrade, TimberTuff). I was initially attracted to them based on simplicity and low cost, so I spent some hours trying to figure out if one was higher quality than the rest? Ultimately I had to conclude: no, they are all bad. Even if you get a unit without obvious manufacturing defects, you have issues: The metal guide inevitably has some “wiggle room” on the 2×4, so your bar will wobble and cuts won’t be straight.Getting your bar precisely perpendicular to the rig (to cut at a right angle, i.e. square) can be a real challenge.Clamping the guide to your bar is likely to be either too loose (saw vibration will shake it loose and destroy your chain) or too tight (which will either shred your bolt threads, or even snap the cast metal). The solution many people arrive at is using stronger bolts and drilling a hole through your chainsaw’s bar (!) There are YouTube videos showing unfortunate people using these rigs to produce rough, uneven boards with considerable difficulty. There are some people that claim it works “just fine” for them. There is even one fellow who, through luck, skill and determination, manages to mill slabs of hard Hawaiian trees using one of these rigs and a small, low-power Ryobi 14″ battery chainsaw. So, it can work. A note on chains Most people recommend using a special “ripping” chain for cutting down the length of any log. There are even some amazing videos of hard-core chainsaw guys evaluating different kinds of chains for milling, for their effect on cutting time, smoothness of resulting cuts, and how frequently you have to sharpen. It’s a potentially deep subject, but “use a ripping chain” is probably good enough advice for most of us. Beams vs. Slabs Videos like this one () show that cutting slabs with a vertical mill is possible but fussy, difficult, and error-prone – it involves a lot of fudging and shimming and tuning your rig to try to keep your log stable and your cut perpendicular. The vertical mills seem just fine, however, for just cutting off 4 sides to make a beam. So, for those of us who want nice slabs, not just beams, it’s an argument for spending the $200 for the type 2 (Granberg G777), not the types 3 or 4. Conclusion Based on everything I’ve learned, I wouldn’t get one of the cheapest rigs. The type 1 is too large, but either the type 2 or 3 (Granberg G777 or G555B) seem worth the investment – or both, because edging before slabbing is potentially better/easier than attempting to do all cuts vertically (or all horizontally, then needing to clean up each slab later with a track saw). /2022/09/chainsaw-milling-what-ive-learned/feed/ 2 Powerful Battery-Electric Chainsaws /2022/09/powerful-battery-electric-chainsaws/ /2022/09/powerful-battery-electric-chainsaws/#comments Tue, 13 Sep 2022 19:52:58 +0000 After a few weeks of research, I think I know what new chainsaw to buy. The Greenworks Commercial 82CS34 For context, battery chainsaws have not been considered “serious” in the past compared to gasoline models, but now (as of Summer 2022) there are abundant powerful options, for up to a 20″ bar. For nearly 4 years, I’ve been happily using a 14″ Makita XCU03 (LXTx2), and I’ve been delighted with the quality and reliability, but now I need something bigger and more powerful. The two saws marked with a (*) are, as far as I can tell, not yet released in the USA. My first impulse was to buy a more powerful Makita chainsaw, but it’s not sold in my country, and also, as you can see in the table, it’s surprisingly underpowered. The next saws (Ego, Kobalt, Greenworks) are just three examples of affordable 18″ saws under 3 HP that are sold under dozens of brand names by many companies. They appear fine, but… The last three saws are all new this year, and are the first three to reach 4 HP and directly support a 20″ bar. Stihl is a major German chainsaw manufacturer, and their MSA 300 looks amazing, but, once again, it’s not sold in the USA yet, and will certainly be very expensive when it does (probably $900 for saw, $400 for battery) That leaves a choice between the last two, the DeWalt and Greenworks Commercial. From online reviews, both are impressive. Both are affordable. The DeWalt saw seems to sell for around $390, the battery for another $390, but bundled together for only $550. The Greenworks Commercial is $600 for a similar bundle. The final points I considered, in favor of the DeWalt saw: DeWalt is a much bigger company with a much bigger user base.DeWalt has a better reputation for support. Some points against the DeWalt, in favor of the Greenworks saw: Some claim that the DeWalt might overheat more easily than other saws, or that the bar retention mechanism is a little better on other saws.Subjectively, to me the DeWalt looks clunky and blocky.The DeWalt has a strange low chain speed, which some YouTube videos indicate produces a rougher cut surface when doing chainsaw milling. /2022/09/powerful-battery-electric-chainsaws/feed/ 5 Gasoline vs. Battery-Electric Mower /2022/05/gasoline-vs-battery-electric-mower/ /2022/05/gasoline-vs-battery-electric-mower/#respond Sat, 21 May 2022 05:28:50 +0000 /?p=644 I bought a new lawnmower on 2022-05-13 – here’s a comparison to my previous mower. Toro model 20340 (“Toro Recycler® SmartStow (22”) 163cc Personal Pace® “)Makita XML08 (“36V (18V X2) LXT® Brushless 21″ Self-Propelled Commercial”)Typical cost:$450$700 (includes 4 5Ah batteries) Caveats: I can really only compare these two mowers, so this is not a general review of electric mowers. This is just one data point with my own experience. Also, our farm is in the wet subtropics so grass is typically wetter and taller than typical lawns, and the whole farm is sloped (no flat ground). I always use the bagger to catch all grass, which feeds our compost system (and hence the gardens). As gas mowers go, this Toro is reasonably quiet, reliable and affordable. It’s survived years of heavy use without any engine issues, and only minor repairs (like the starter cord). On our farm, it does struggle to fill the bagger. Unless I am (rarely) cutting a very small height of dry grass, it jams and requires me to stop the mower, lift the bag and manually clear the grass into the bag. The bag is not very large. This means I am re-starting the mower very frequently (no doubt contributing to the starter cord wearing out). Buying the Makita was influenced by the dozen other great Makita products we own that use the same LXT batteries. After a week of use, here are some key differences I experienced: Power. The Makita is actually a bit more powerful, and the batteries last well enough for my long mowing sessions. Bag. The Makita’s grass bag is a little larger, and (possibly because it is angled closer to the ground) the grass goes into it more reliably, which saves significant work.Noise and fumes: Electric is wonderful.Handling: The Makita is a little larger, a little heavier, and has more traction and rolling resistance. That means it’s significantly more effort to maneuver it, and it’s harder to push through grass, level or uphill. It does roll fairly easily backwards, or downhill. Thankfully, it is self-propelled, but:Self-propulsion. The Makita’s powerful drive has a speed knob, but the handle to engage it is either on or off, and pressing the bar requires waiting a second for the drive to engage. That also means when you ease off the handle, it abruptly halts. The Toro has what it calls “personal pace”, which is a variable speed that responds instantly to how hard you push the handle. This makes the Toro much easier to maneuver. Part of my struggle is surely due to the years I’ve spent with the Toro, my reflexes and habits have grown on it, so some of this will improve as I spent more time with the Makita. However, the lack of responsively variable drive on the Makita is undeniably more awkward. If another brand of electric mower has it, that would be a big deal.Height adjustment. The Makita has a single easy level to raise and lower the entire mower, the Toro has one stiff difficult level per wheel. To summarize: I give the Makita +1 for power, +1 for better bag, +2 for being electric, -2 for being harder to maneuver, and +1 for easy height adjustment. Overall, the pros outweigh the cons. /2022/05/gasoline-vs-battery-electric-mower/feed/ 0 CTAHR Potato Trial: Results /2020/10/ctahr-potato-trial-results/ /2020/10/ctahr-potato-trial-results/#respond Fri, 16 Oct 2020 09:18:41 +0000 /?p=636 I did the harvest today, and here are the results, in terms of grams of potato per plant: Yukon Gold144Dark Red Norland113Kennebec283Red Gold244Kattahdin75La Ratte13Papa Cacho27 This is pretty awful. For comparison, just planting random store-bought yellow potatoes gives around 250 g/plant, while better-performing varieties (Island Sunshine and Yukon Gem) on my farm have produced 400-800 g on average or even well over 1 kg in lucky cases. The one promising bit here is the Kennebec: Kennebec did the best in this trial, basically due to surviving a few days longer before dying back. I might try this variety again, starting from fresh imported seed potato, on newer garden beds. All the other varieties died back before producing any substantial potatoes. As I’m not a botanist with a laboratory, I have no way to determine what causes the die-back – presumably some fungal blight, but which one? From looking at online images, I would say that the die-back looks somewhat like late blight, but not really at all like early blight. There are also dozens of other potential fungal and viral potato issues, and no way to know which I’m encountering, which is frustrating. /2020/10/ctahr-potato-trial-results/feed/ 0 CTAHR Potato Trial: update, blight /2020/09/ctahr-potato-trial-update-blight/ /2020/09/ctahr-potato-trial-update-blight/#respond Tue, 15 Sep 2020 00:51:34 +0000 /?p=634 Here’s the chronology on the potato trial: 2020.07.20: planting day 2020.08.16 (day 16): all the potatoes have emerged and are growing nicely, except for the smallest varieties (Laratte and Papa Cacho), which are barely emerged and tiny plants. 2020.09.03 (day 38): The plants have been mounded (hilled) with regular garden soil. Nearly all plants are showing early signs of some kind of blight, starting with brown spots on the leaves: One of the yukon golds is already completely blighted, down to bare stems: 2020.09.12 (day 47): Almost all the plants are completely blighted to the point of losing almost all their leaves: The only exception is three plants in the middle of the bed, I believe they are the Kennebec, which appears almost unaffected by any blight: This is a good result. It is difficult to find details on Kennebec, but one reference did suggest it has “good field resistance to late blight”. The little “Papa Cacho” variety at the end of the bed also appears to be relatively unblighted, but since the plants are so small, it’s not as promising for yield. /2020/09/ctahr-potato-trial-update-blight/feed/ 0 Biochar pit volumes, and prices /2020/09/biochar-pit-volumes-prices/ /2020/09/biochar-pit-volumes-prices/#respond Wed, 02 Sep 2020 08:40:41 +0000 /?p=632 Concerning volume. In my previous biochar post, I summarized that my two rectangular lined pits were producing around 1.3 cubic yards of char per firing. Since then, I’ve been told that a simple earthen pit could produce as many as 5 yd3 in a single firing! Let’s calculate how large that would be. A round pit with a flat bottom is basically a truncated cone, which is like this but upside down: 5 cubic yards is 135 cubic feet. To be able to step down into the pit, I don’t imagine it being much deeper than 3′ deep (my current pits are around 2′ deep, and it’s quite a step to get in/out of them). Considering a truncated cone 3′ deep, with 4′ diameter at the bottom, and a 7′ diameter at the top, that’s only 73 ft3. That isn’t even considering compaction (char settles, so that as you walk on it and unload, it packs down, so the entire pit is not full of char). To get to 5 yd3 = 135 ft3, you’d need a pit 3′ deep, 5′ bottom diameter, and 10′ top diameter! That’s a huge area to build a fire in. What if we kept the current approach of a lined pit, but allow for sloped sides, and deeper, and wider? The sloped sides would allow for better aeration, allowing us to go deeper. The shape would be like this, upside down: With a depth of 2.5′, a bottom of 3×3′, and a top of 5×5′, that’s… only around 31 ft3, and considering compaction, probably more like 25 ft3. That’s not much better than my current “big” pit of 20 ft3, while being deeper to step into, and a much larger area to have to cover with soil. There’s just no way around it. To get a lot of char, you need a really massive pit, regardless of shape, or whether it’s dirt or bricks. Meanwhile, concerning price, I haven’t actually found anyone on the Island of Hawaii selling bulk char. Retail, all I’ve found is at Farm Supply Coop in Hilo, as of July, they were carry
