Elrond Lawrence Media Public relations, writing, photography Wed, 02 May 2018 22:12:10 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Route 66 Railway Day May 12 in LA, San Bernardino stations /railroads-and-transit/route-66-railway-day-may-12-in-la-san-bernardino-stations/ Mon, 23 Apr 2018 20:14:16 +0000 /?p=769 LA, San Bernardino book events mark ROUTE 66 RAILWAY DAY on Saturday, May 12 Celebrate the historic relationship of Route 66 and the Santa Fe Railway in California with “Route 66 Railway Day” on Saturday, May 12. It’s a family-friendly event on the rails and in two historic Southern California train stations, inspired by the colorful coffee table book Route 66 Railway. Hosted by the California Historic Route 66 Association, railfans and highway fans can choose from three great opportunities, or combine them into an entire day of fun and exploration. Los Angeles Union Station, 10-11:30 am: Enjoy a brief presentation by author Elrond Lawrence about Union Station history and significance with an informal walking tour of the station: We’ll gather at the information desk (just inside the street entrance) before 10:00 am. Union Station is located at 800 N. Alameda in Los Angeles. Visit the station website at www.unionstationla.com. Metrolink ride to San Bernardino Buy a weekend Metrolink pass at Union Station (only $10!), get food to go at the station, and board a Metrolink train to San Bernardino for the afternoon event at the depot museum. We will assemble in a single rail car on train 362, which departs LA at 12:10 pm and arrives San Bernardino at 1:48 pm. (*See Metrolink advisory below.) Along the way, author Elrond Lawrence will provide commentary on his book Route 66 Railway and about the former Santa Fe route and Route 66 between LA and San Bernardino. San Bernardino historic Santa Fe station, 2 pm to 4:30 pm Enjoy a separate presentation by the author at the Santa Fe Depot in San Bernardino, with a book signing and tours of the depot and railroad museum. Route 66 Railway books will be available to buy at the museum gift shop for $35 plus tax. The station is located at 1170 W. Third St. in San Bernardino; visit the museum website at www.sbdepotmuseum.com. The event is free except for the $10 weekend Metrolink pass and books. Register for the day at this Eventbrite link. 5/2 UPDATE – Metrolink has announced track maintenance on May 12-13 which will cause 45-minute delays on the San Bernardino Line. See this link for details. We encourage travel to Union Station by Metro or Metrolink to avoid traffic. Information can be found at www.metrolinktrains.com and www.metro.net Route 66 Railway is published by the Los Angeles Railroad Heritage Foundation, located at www.larhf.org. Elrond and LARHF are also on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Route 66 Railway recognized by California Historical Societies /railroads-and-transit/route-66-railway-recognized-by-california-historical-societies/ Wed, 21 Jun 2017 17:31:58 +0000 /?p=735 We’re excited to announce that Route 66 Railway is receiving a scholars’ award from the Conference of California Historical Societies! An event flyer can be downloaded and printed by clicking here. For model railroading fans, the Monterey & Salinas Valley Railroad museum will be open just a block away, in the Railway Express Building next to the Amtrak station, from 5-8 pm. Local Author Elrond Lawrence to Sign Copies of Route 66 Railway at National Steinbeck Center, April 7 Salinas author Elrond Lawrence will sign copies of his coffee table book Route 66 Railway on Friday, April 7, at the National Steinbeck Center in downtown Salinas. Part of the First Fridays Art Walk, the signing event will take place from 4:30-7 pm. The public can enjoy the Steinbeck Center’s permanent exhibit, plus wine tasting and live bluegrass music from Clear Blue Clay. Route 66 Railway explores the 90-year relationship between famed U.S Highway 66 and the Santa Fe Railway in the American Southwest, featuring dramatic color photography and lively essays. It examines the rise, fall and rebirth of these iconic routes, taking the reader on a journey that spans nine decades and more than 800 miles from California to New Mexico. A revised and expanded second edition of the book is now available six years after the first edition sold out. During the April 7 signing event, Elrond will also discuss his 30 years of photographing America’s historic railroads, vintage highways, forgotten towns, and other treasures across California and the Southwest. Elrond’s writing and photography appears in magazines, books, calendars and advertising; sample work can be viewed at his website, www.66rails.com. For more information, visit www.steinbeck.org or call the National Steinbeck Center museum at (831) 775-4721. Route 66 Railway is back! I’m happy to announce that book signing events are now being scheduled. The first two events will be in March and early April, with more planned for southern California. On Saturday, March 18, we attended Winterail, the annual railroad photography exposition and merchandise show in its new home in Corvallis, Oregon. Thanks to everyone who stopped by the booth! On Friday evening, April 7, I’ll be signing books at the National Steinbeck Center in oldtown Salinas, Cal. from 4:30-7 pm as part of the First Fridays Art Walk. The center’s John Steinbeck exhibits will be open for viewing at no charge, and you can also enjoy wine-tasting and live bluegrass music from Clear Blue Clay. Around 6pm I’ll talk about the book and show some photography. The press release can be read here. A third event is being planned for historic Philippe’s restaurant in downtown LA, which will feature dinner, an author’s talk, and photo show. Watch for a May date to be announced soon. Thanks for your support! Route 66 Railway is back! /uncategorized/route66-railway/ Sat, 03 Dec 2016 21:14:54 +0000 /?p=669 Expanded second edition! 16 more pages! Order in time for the holidays! Now available, Route 66 Railway is the only book to explore the relationship between the Santa Fe/BNSF Railways and historic U.S. 66 in the Southwest, using dramatic color photography and engaging text. Download an order form here or visit www.larhf.org. For 90 years and over 800 miles, the highway and railroad have been constant companions through California, Arizona and New Mexico. This hardcover book is a visual road trip across these iconic routes. Each has experienced rise, fall and rebirth. Route 66 has seen a renaissance among travelers seeking the mythic American road trip, far from soulless Interstates. The former Santa Fe (now BNSF Railway) is one of America’s busiest railroads — up to 100 trains a day pace the highway through deserts, forests, mountain passes, cities, and dusty towns. Published by the Los Angeles Railroad Heritage Foundation, Route 66 Railway takes you over Cajon Pass and the Mojave Desert, across the Arizona Divide, and past New Mexico’s red mesas to Albuquerque and to the Midwest. The occasion is Winterail, a photography and multimedia show that celebrated its 35th anniversary this year. The drive to and from Winterail is half the fun of going — the other half is seeing old friends and catching up in the dealers’ room. This year I made a little photo gallery of the three-day weekend, including some incredible scenes of almond blossoms that we discovered while following the BNSF rail line near Modesto. While those dreams were swept away, Union Pacific’s Yuma Subdivision hosts up to 35 trains a day through this searing desert terrain. A new article in Trains magazine examines the shared history of the sea and its companion railroad: tour this vital rail corridor that passes old seaside towns and a border patrol checkpoint straight out of “Border Wars.” Learn more about the March 2013 issue here. Lots of beautiful vintage clothes have been photographed, we just got the Spring Lookbook photos back from the photographer and the new website and shop are in their final stages. You probably noticed some updated branding as well.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="166" width="400" />

This blog started in 2010 with the opening of an Etsy shop filled with vintage goods for the home. I enjoyed this new-to-me blogging phenomenon so much that I started posting about more things I liked: graphic design, interiors, DIY and personal adventures. Then, another 6 petals Etsy shop opened with a focus on vintage clothing and accessories. Obviously, we're really into the old and beautiful. But we also want to incorporate some new and modern. Part of why we love vintage and antiques is because of the craftsmanship and attention to detail you find. Many of these items were built to last– and the have!

We totally support the American-made trend that's taking shape and hope to build our own community of those that do too. I've been following lots of local, regional and national artist and makers that are dedicated to their craft. They're creating items that will last with great character and craftsmanship. We hope to bring those types of products into the mix of beautiful vintage goods.

You can sign up to receive updates at <a href=";. And when you do you'll receive an exclusive coupon code for the shop before it opens!

Thanks for visiting this blog. There's a ton of fun stuff happening, so stick around. -christina2014/02/the-new-refined-6-petals.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (christina)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001557279137169259.post-5361083224669230447Wed, 19 Feb 2014 18:05:00 +00002014-02-19T13:05:21.352-05:006 petals vintage clotheslookbookphoto shootspring6 petals spring lookbook // coming soon!I should really wait to get the photos back from our amazing photographer, but I'm too excited not to share. There's this amazing little place in Norfolk, <a href="; target="_blank">The Hermitage Museum & Gardens, that's bursting with character. It's nestled behind a residential neighborhood, and they have a building dedicated to Visual Arts. I really want to take the ceramics and weaving classes.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

I love the way the vines have taken over the facade.

The class was focused on succulent gardens, the terrarium-style. Summers in Virginia Beach are perfect for Chesapeake Bay blue crabs. You'll have to get a local to show you, but there's a whole science to eating these guys. After a day and a half, we already have two crabs. One is a male (the bluer one on the top shelf) and one female (the one with the reddish front craws). We throw females back in the water and hope for more males to climb into the pot.2013/08/crabbing.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (christina)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001557279137169259.post-963232788000154406Wed, 31 Jul 2013 04:00:00 +00002013-07-31T18:41:30.963-04:00my favorite thingsstylewhite t-shirts::plain white tee::An absolute favorite in my closet is a plain white t-shirt. I have a whole <a href=" board of things to make, and I'd like to actually make a few. I put this together in about 10 minutes a couple weekends ago.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

I usually find any excuse to make a stop at a thrift store, especially if I'm nearby. On one of these impromptu stops I found this little pot with two holes on each side and knew it would be perfect for a hanging plant. Luckily, I had some extra plants lying around that were perfect for the pot.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="; />

I'd like to find a vintage ceiling hook, but that black one was on hand and works for the time being. It's a nice addition to this corner of the kitchen.

So, this is just the beginning of a whole series of house projects.2013/07/house-project-1.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (christina)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001557279137169259.post-2376078805021570463Thu, 04 Jul 2013 17:37:00 +00002013-07-04T14:08:23.292-04:00AmericaFourth of July::celebrate independence::There's lots + lots to be thankful for.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

<a href=" />

P.S. for those of you look for an easy way to get updates from 6 petals, <a href=" with Bloglovin.2013/07/celebrate-independence.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (christina)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001557279137169259.post-7170763495967764779Tue, 25 Jun 2013 04:24:00 +00002013-06-25T15:46:12.063-04:00flower crowngarden weddinglovemy favorite thingswedding::welcome back, MRS::Let's take a moment to wipe off those cobwebs that gathered since...February!

On June 1st, Jay and I got married in a garden with our family and closest friends. Luckily, we've been able to acquire a couple big pieces (like <a href=" sofa -- oh, Restoration Hardware!) that we love. I started a secret board on Pinterest to hold a handful of special images that I'd like to recreate. And since it's not just my home, it's important that Jay can get behind it too. Here are a few things I've been itching to do lately to make our house OUR HOME...

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

1. hanging plants in windows
For some reason, I can't stop buying plants. We have a window box in our kitchen that's quickly filling up. But I love the idea of hanging them in a window. The string of pearls plant is perfect for this.

2. painting two thirds of the wall
All of the walls in our house are a creamy white. We also have a lot of wooden panel walls. I'm excited to add some color and I really like this treatment to make the ceilings look even higher.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

3. finding the perfect little tree holder
I picked up a cute <a href=" leaf fig for the corner of the living room. As you can see, he needs a decorative holder/pot. I'm all about the vintage pottery, so it'd be awesome to stumble on an old ceramic piece at the thrift store.

4. light fixtures
Jay and I were talking about this tonight. Most of our house has recessed lighting, which is nice, but I love pendant lights and decorative lamps. I think lighting plays a huge part in a home with style and ambiance. <a href=" one from Anthropologie would be nice.2013/02/making-house-home.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (christina)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001557279137169259.post-8159945182422703795Thu, 07 Feb 2013 02:46:00 +00002013-02-06T21:46:37.904-05:006 petals vintage clothesstylevintage clothingvintage fashion::soon::
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

It's almost here!
