One of the most important tools forecaster use daily is the Doppler radar. StormTrack 3 Meteorologist Helen Holt took a tour Thursday inside of our area’s radar.

Standing high above the treeline is the Weather Surveillance Radar System or the Doppler radar.

Within this big dome is a dish stretching 30 feet wide that rotates around collecting critical weather data.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Mark Bacon says, “Radar is by far the most valuable tool to assessing severe weather because your next more accurate form of remote sensing is things like satellites and they are tens of thousands of miles up in space.”

National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist Steve Pfaff says “the radar detects things like rain, hail, snow and from that they have logarithms that can be run to determine the size of the rain drops and get better rainfall estimates or the size of the hail which would help with a severe thunderstorm warning.”

Pfaff adds “the radar also determines velocity so we can analyze the wind within the thunderstorms and if we see a rotation start to develop within the storm and we see it develop down through the storm that would prompt us to issue a tornado warning.”

“It’s always looking up a little bit and then it goes around a couple of times and then it looks up every higher because we are trying to get a whole vertical picture of the thunderstorm which could be up to 40,000 feet tall,” Bacon said.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We have seen our fair share of rainy days this winter. The National Weather Service says 70% of our average annual rainfall has come in the last five months alone.

The NWS is looking to add more CoCoRaHs volunteers which that stands for “Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network” where you measure and map precipitation right from your own backyard.

“Each observers obtains a rain gauge and you take the training either online or via on our training classes where you learn how to use this gauge,” Weiss said. “What you do is measure the rain gauge every morning and report it on the CoCoRaHs website. Every day you’ll be able to see the map updated. They will see their reports, they will see everyone else’s around, and they become a national network reporting rain and snow to the program.”

In our state, there is currently more than 700 active CoCoRaHs volunteers and 58 in southeastern North Carolina alone.

“One of the big problems that we face, unfortunately, is is a warning useful if it’s never heard? And of course we know the answer to that,” said Steve Pfaff of the National Weather Service’s Wilmington office. “That’s a big challenge to us getting (the warning) to people, especially in North Carolina. We lead the way in nocturnal tornado fatalities. People are asleep. They don’t have a weather radio. They don’t have their TV on. The radio’s not on. We can’t get the warning to them.”

Of course, this can have tragic consequences, like last year in Joplin, MO, or 2006 when a tornado hit Riegelwood around dawn.

Many of these fatal disasters can be prevented just by buying some simple equipment. A NOAA

After: radio could save your life. It alerts you whenever there’s a severe thunderstorm warning or tornado warning issued for your area, and it will wake you up in the event of a tornado.

As we enter peak severe weather season, you have a responsibility to get yourself prepared.

Identify the safest room in your home far away from windows, with as many walls between you and the outside as possible, have a plan for you and your family, arm yourself with a weather radio, and follow warnings when they’re issued.

“It’s just keeping a high level of situational awareness, making sure your family has a plan and don’t assume that it can’t happen to you,” Pfaff said.

As part of severe weather awareness week, there will be a statewide tornado drill Wednesday at 9:30 am. Schools and government buildings will test their plans as they would during an actual tornado.

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — Gov. Josh Stein and state emergency officials are urging North Carolinians to prepare for potentially dangerous severe

Officials said the storm system could bring damaging wind gusts of 74 mph or higher, large hail and tornadoes.

“Unusually severe weather is moving into North Carolina, bringing a risk of damaging wind gusts, thunderstorms, hail, and even tornadoes,” Stein said in a statement. “Please make sure emergency alerts are enabled on your phone and make a plan for how to keep yourself and your family safe.”

Weather radios, specialized receivers that get alerts and can sound an alarm in an emergency, are something that every home and business should have, said Rick Smith, the warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s forecast office in Norman, Oklahoma.

“It does feel like old-school technology, but they are lifesaving devices,” Smith said.

Radios can be particularly valuable in the South, where many tornadoes strike at night when people are sleeping. “This can wake you up in the middle of the night with the alarm,” Smith said.

If you have to be above ground in a tornado, “your goal is to put as many walls and barriers between you and the outside as you possibly can,” Smith said.

Smith recommends using mattresses, couch cushions or other sturdy items to protect yourself from deadly flying or falling debris. Bicycle or sports helmets can provide crucial head protection. ATLANTA (AP) — U.S. government forecasters are using a relatively rare “high-risk” designation — the highest category they use — to warn that a major tornado outbreak appears likely Wednesday in an area that’s home to about 2.5 million people.

This drawing is a tribute to his courage, leadership and determination to save lives in storm conditions, rescuing a sailing vessel with 8 people on board, that was disabled and taking on water approximately two miles off Porthleven upon 31st October 2022, and justly awarded a silver medal for gallantry and thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum. Mechanic Marcel Le Breton, Navigator James Roberts and crew members Will Tremeer, Adrian Thomas, Dan Sell and Trevellyan Worth also awarded Silver Medal Service Certificates for their courage, determination and teamwork under pressure and in extreme conditions. This sort of heroism exemplifies the extreme conditions that RNLI crews have faced in so many rescues, since its inception in 1824

NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) — The Warming Shelter ILM at Grace United Methodist Church in downtown Wilmington opened up this weekend and will remain open through Saturday.

One of the biggest needs the shelter has right now is volunteers for the overnight shift from 10 pm to 5:30 am.

Charlene Zorn is the volunteer food coordinator for the Warming Shelter ILM, and she says these volunteers are essential for safety.
