And while an air temperature reading might seem like the key indicator, it is rarely enough to plan safe and efficient winter service. In fact, relying on it alone can be misleading.

Slightly above-freezing temperatures and dry conditions do not automatically guarantee safe roads and sidewalks. Rain at positive temperatures can still create dangerous black ice. At the same time, not every snowfall results in slippery surfaces, since ice develops directly on the ground—not in the air.

Air and weather provide the “ingredients.” The actual formation of ice happens at the surface—on roads, sidewalks, and bridges. That is why winter service needs forecasts that show how surface temperatures will evolve and which factors—such as residual moisture, rain, snow, sleet, or hail—are likely to crea

Why Air and Surface Temperatures Differ

Official air temperature is measured at two meters above the ground, with sensors shaded and ventilated to avoid distortions from sunlight. Surface temperatures, however, often tell a different story.

During the day, asphalt and stone can heat up far more than the surrounding air. At night, these same surfaces release heat quickly, cooling faster than the air above. That is why car windows can freeze even when the
Match: weather
After: app still shows plus degrees.

Surface materials also make a difference. Asphalt, concrete, grass, or marble all store and release heat in different ways. Air temperature alone can only provide rough guidance. To understand the risk of slipperiness, surface temperature must be measured and forecast precisely.

Surface temperature is influenced not only by the air and solar radiation but also by the properties of the material itself. Pavement types differ in how they conduct and store heat, and in how much sunlight they reflect (albedo). Past weather plays a role too: stored summer heat, prolonged thawing, or extended cold periods all leave their mark on surface conditions.

For reliable winter service, knowing the actual surface temperature is essential. Only then can the road condition be assessed correctly. This requires specialized road sensors and forecasting systems—such as the Weather Solutions METIS system. Concrete measurement data significantly improve for

Ice forms on the surface—not in the air. Surface temperature is the deciding factor.

  • Weather data alone are not sufficient. Road conditions become predictable only when combined with pavement properties.

  • Forecasts make winter service operations targeted, efficient, and plannable.

  • They help reduce the use of de-icing materials and cut workload—saving costs and protecting the environment.

  • They create a clear basis for internal decisions and external communication.

  • With the MeteoFocus portal, Weather Solutions provides exactly this: surface temperatures,

This holds true for Greenland, where proximity to the ice cap doesn’t shield researchers from the capriciousness of the climate. In August 2023, the Deep Purple ERC Project embarked on a two-week long mission to the remote 79°N in Qaanaaq, Greenland. Our mission: to unravel the mysteries of the darkening ice. Colored ice The Greenland Ice Sheet, under assault from accelerating melting rates, bears witness to an unlikely culprit – minuscule ice and snow algae. While invisible to the naked eye, these microorganisms wield a profound influence. Their growth on the glacier’s surface amplifies heat absorption, which, coupled with their purple, red, or green hues, diminishes the ice’s reflective albedo. The consequence is a hastening of environmental melt. Astonishingly, approximately 40% of Greenland’s annual mass

Planning a helicopter expedition to the remote snow line of the Greenland Ice Sheet thus becomes as much an art as a science. Our strategy hinges on a simple ritual: gazing out the window. If the sky is gray, our plans remain grounded; otherwise, hope endures. The final day The preceding three days had been characterized by persistent rain and overcast skies, which had effectively tethered our team to the ground. As we awoke on this particular morning, it seemed like déjà vu as we peered out the window, greeted once more by the familiar sight of rain and gray skies. As we settled into our daily routine, tending to apartment chores and monitoring our samples, the phone call from Air Greenland shattered our reverie. The caller hinted at a lifting cloud ceiling and a possible four-hour weather window. The catch? Uncertainty veiled the exact conditions on the Greenland Ice Sheet, leaving us

These diverse samples will help us unravel the enigma of how these resilient purple algae endure and thrive in an environment where they contribute to the very melting of their fragile home. The moment I had anticipated arrived, and I took a pause to absorb the profound solitude of this untouched realm, a place where no human had ever ventured, and likely, no one ever would again (Fig. 2). As far as the eye could see, there was no sign of life. It was a testament to the tenacity of these microscopic organisms, surviving in such a remote location without a visible source of carbon or micronutrients.

    Colored ice

The Greenland Ice Sheet, under assault from accelerating melting rates, bears witness to an unlikely culprit – minuscule ice and snow algae. While invisible to the naked eye, these microorganisms wield a profound influence. Their growth on the glacier’s surface amplifies heat absorption, which, coupled with their purple, red, or green hues,

Astonishingly, approximately 40% of Greenland’s annual mass loss is attributed to this biological darkening phenomenon (Chevrollier, et al. 2022). Yet, the question of why these organisms have chosen this harsh, resource-scarce, and weather-beaten terrain as their home remains unanswered.

The difficulty of planning in the Arctic

Cumulonimbus storm clouds can metamorphose into benign cumulus clouds within a matter of hours. The Arctic Circle’s erratic weather patterns, wrought by volatile currents, usher in daily fluctuations between warm and cold fronts. Planning a helicopter expedition to the remote snow line of the Greenland Ice Sheet thus becomes as much an art as a science. Our strategy hinges on a simple ritual: gazing out the window. If the sky is gray, our plans remain grounded; otherwise, hope endures.

    The final day

The preceding three days had been characterized by persistent rain and overcast skies, which had effectively tethered our team to the ground. As we awoke on this particular morning, it seemed like déjà vu as we peered out the window, greeted once more by the familiar sight of rain and gray skies. With equipment and backpacks in hand, we called for a ride to the airport, arriving just 30 minutes after giving the trip the green light. Anticipation gripped us as we awaited the helicopter, eyes glued to the airport windows. Spying the aircraft across the fjord, smiles spread across our faces. The window of opportunity was widening. In this blog, I want to bring you along my GC-Net fieldwork journey and tell you the story of how a new weather station is set up and the types of measurements it can provide. GC-Net weather stations In 2021, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) took over the GC-Net weather station network originally established by the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at Colorado University, Boulder, with support from NASA and NSF in 1995. Data from these weather stations are transmitted via satellite link in near-real time, not only to ensure they are still working, but so researchers all over the world can monitor current and past weather conditions. In fact, each weather station sends about 11,000 messages per year, and data scientists at GEUS are currently processing these data and working towards making them available as open access datasets to the broader community, similarly to the already published historical GC-Net data.   Although the weather stations are designed to be tough and rugged, the harsh conditions – especially during winter storms – can take a toll on their sensitive instruments. And because the GC-Net stations are set up in the accumulation zone, where there is more snowfall during winter than melt in summer, the weather stations gradually get buried over time. Therefore, we at GEUS have to visit and service these

These visits give us the opportunity to physically inspect each of the weather stations, and of course, comes with the welcome side-effect for us to get out of a usually rainy Copenhagen spring and into the field. In 2022, two GC-Net field trips to service existing – and install new – weather stations were undertaken; one covering the eastern part of Greenland (see blog post from Penny How) and one covering the southern and western areas, which I took part in. Setting up a new weather station To reach the weather stations, we fly in with a Twin Otter plane from either Kangerlussuaq, Ilulissat, Upernavik or Qaanaaq. To maximize the amount of time on the ice, we typically load the plane with our equipment the evening before. The packing process is a life-sized game of Tetris, and with all the loading, deloading and loading again due the many logistical- and weather-induced changes to our plans, we now are self-proclaimed masters

During the 1-2.5 hour flights to the weather station sites, we get to enjoy the absolutely stunning views of frozen fjords, outlet glaciers and the mesmerizing wind-blown and melt-feature patterned ice sheet surface – not a bad view for our flying office week! As soon as the plane gently lands at our field site, the “countdown” to take-off starts and we get to work. We typically have only 5-7 hours time to get the weather stations ready for another lonely year on the ice. Although we hadn’t worked together in the field before, we were a really well oiled team – maybe all the downtime due to weather and logistical delays was at least good in the sense that we had lots of opportunities to prepare for when, how, and what each of us needed to do in order to be efficient as possible as a whole when we’d get to our sites. While some of our team are offloading the plane, others are setting up the

The GC-Net weather station consists of a main mast and two sidebooms that hold all the different instruments. To begin the assembly, all instruments are installed on the two side booms, before being mounted on the main mast together with the recording box and the solar panel. Because the weather station is almost 4 m tall, with the instruments mounted as high above ground as possible to avoid getting buried in snow, most of the station is assembled on the ground before raising it vertically. Luckily for us, the engineers at the GEUS glaciolab prepared the weather station kit in an easy-to-assemble way – keeping true to Denmark, it’s almost like a giant Lego-kit. All one needs is a 13 mm wrench (the “golden tool” amongst our GEUS field team), a drill to bolt the mast toge

After most of the instruments are assembled on the weather station and all sensors have passed the “ground-test”, it is time to raise the station. This is an “all hands on deck” moment, and requires equal amounts of balance, strength and team-communication: “Up, left, forward, a little back, back, … wait, ok, go”, followed by loud cheering – and that’s the moment the new weather station is standing tall at its designated location. For me, this was certainly one of the most thrilling moments of our fieldwork, experiencing the “birth” of a new

The final touches on the newly-setup station include installing the thermistor string to measure subsurface snow and firn temperatures, burying the battery box, and securing any remaining cables. The battery box is buried 20-30 cm below the snow surface to shield the batteries from the extreme cold air temperatures during winter (snow is an excellent insulator). The thermistor string is installed in a 10m deep firn core hole, initially drilled to measure the firn density – measurement synergy at its best. The firn core and snow density measurements (from the snow pit) provide additional information that, along with the weather station data, allows to develop better mass balance models for Greenland. Once the final instrument checks are done, we play another round of Twin-Otter-Tetris, and it’s time to say good-bye to our weather station. As the plane takes off, the weather station quickly becomes a tiny dot behind us, standing

As soon as the plane gently lands at our field site, the “countdown” to take-off starts and we get to work. We typically have only 5-7 hours time to get the weather stations ready for another lonely year on the ice.

All one needs is a 13 mm wrench (the “golden tool” amongst our GEUS field team), a drill to bolt the mast together, and a few zip ties (or the all-so-versatile duct tape) to keep th

The total area of 1,000 hectares encompasses runways, taxiways, parking positions for aircraft and various logistics facilities.

Weather radios, specialized receivers that get alerts and can sound an alarm in an emergency, are something that every home and business should have, said Rick Smith, the warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s forecast office in Norman, Oklahoma.

“It does feel like old-school technology, but they are lifesaving devices,” Smith said.

Radios can be particularly valuable in the South, where many tornadoes strike at night when people are sleeping. “This can wake you up in the middle of the night with the alarm,” Smith said.

The National Weather Service encourages people to have multiple ways of being warned, which can include

    Where should I take shelter?

The ideal places to take shelter are enclosed, underground shelters and basements, or a safe room above ground that’s designed to withstand tornadic winds.

But many people don’t have that option — in Oklahoma, for example, the clay soil makes building basements expensive, so lots of homes don’t have them.

If you have to be above ground in a tornado, “your goal is to put as many walls and barriers between you and the outside as you possibly can,” Smith said.

Smith recommends using mattresses, couch cushions or other sturdy items to protect yourself from deadly flying or falling debris. Bicycle or sports helmets can provide crucial head protection. It’s important that they are stored in a convenient place so they can be retrieved quickly, when you have only

Dozens of tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued Wednesday and early Thursday from Texas to West Virginia as storms hit those and other states. Forecasters attributed the violent weather to daytime heating combining with an unstable atmosphere, strong wind shear and abundant moisture streaming into the nation’s midsection from the Gulf.

Garcia also reported downed trees and power lines in the county, and officials are preparing for more rain and strong storms Thursday.

“It looks like a swimming pool in my front yard,” he told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

The coming days were also forecast to bring the risk of potentially deadly flash flooding to the South and Midwest as severe thunderstorms blowing eastward become supercharged. PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Some residents in the Cape Fear are cleaning up damage after a strong storm made its way through the area Sunday night.

One area that was hit hard was Pender County, where an EF1 tornado, with wind gusts up to 95 mph, traveled more than 3 miles on the ground near Burgaw.

Just before 7:30 pm, a tornado touched down just south of Herrings Chapel Road and moved northeast.

The tornado knocked down many trees along its path.

Patrick Loid lives less than a mile from where the tornado crossed Herrings Chapel Road.

He was surprised to see all the damage so close to his home.

“They’re starting to become more frequent so, it’s definitely an eye-opener to take this stuff serious,” Loid said. “Storms are getting worse,

The tornado also hit the Washing Hunting Club, where around 50 dogs escaped from their kennels.

The club’s vice president said all the dogs have been found and are okay.

Meanwhile, in Hampstead, County Deputy Fire Marshal Townsend Link said that fire crews responded to a fishing boat struck by lightning on Washington Acres Road.

It happened just before 11 pm Sunday.

“They found a 40-foot center console offshore fishing boat. It was fully involved at the time,” Link said. “The owner stated that there was about 300 gallons of gasoline in it. So Pender EMS and Fire was first to arrive on scene, they had a knockdown of the fire and worked hard to make sure it gets extinguished.”

Link said the boat was a total loss.

One of the most important tools forecaster use daily is the Doppler radar. StormTrack 3 Meteorologist Helen Holt took a tour Thursday inside of our area’s radar.

Standing high above the treeline is the Weather Surveillance Radar System or the Doppler radar.

Within this big dome is a dish stretching 30 feet wide that rotates around collecting critical weather data.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Mark Bacon says, “Radar is by far the most valuable tool to assessing severe weather because your next more accurate form of remote sensing is things like satellites and they are tens of thousands of miles up in space.”

The radar sends out waves of energy, bounces off things like hail and rain within a thunderstorm and that information is reflected back to the dish, then anal

National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist Steve Pfaff says “the radar detects things like rain, hail, snow and from that they have logarithms that can be run to determine the size of the rain drops and get better rainfall estimates or the size of the hail which would help with a severe thunderstorm warning.”

Pfaff adds “the radar also determines velocity so we can analyze the wind within the thunderstorms and if we see a rotation start to develop within the storm and we see it develop down through the storm that would prompt us to issue a tornado warning.”

“It’s always looking up a little bit and then it goes around a couple of times and then it looks up every higher because we are trying to get a whole vertical picture of the thunderstorm which could be up to 40,000 feet tall,” Bacon said.

Before: ning, it’s that people are not heeding or often times even hearing the warning, especially at night.

“One of the big problems that we face, unfortunately, is is a warning useful if it’s never heard? And of course we know the answer to that,” said Steve Pfaff of the National Weather Service’s Wilmington office. “That’s a big challenge to us getting (the warning) to people, especially in North Carolina. We lead the way in nocturnal tornado fatalities. People are asleep. They don’t have a weather radio. They don’t have their TV on. The radio’s not on. We can’t get the warning to them.”

Of course, this can have tragic consequences, like last year in Joplin, MO, or 2006 when a tornado hit Riegelwood around dawn.

Many of these fatal disasters can be prevented just by buying some simple equipment. A NOAA

As part of severe weather awareness week, there will be a statewide tornado drill Wednesday at 9:30 am. Schools and government buildings will test their plans as they would during an actual tornado.

A NOAA

“It’s just keeping a high level of situational awareness, making sure your family has a plan and don’t assume that it can’t happen to you,” Pfaff said.

As part of severe weather awareness week, there will be a statewide tornado drill Wednesday at 9:30 am. Schools and government buildings will test their plans as they would during an actual tornado.

(AP) — Violent storms and tornadoes tore through cities from Oklahoma to Indiana during what could be a record-setting period of deadly weather and flooding, destroying homes and sending debris nearly 5 miles into the air in one location.

“It looks like a swimming pool in my front yard,” he told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

The coming days were also forecast to bring the risk of potentially deadly flash flooding to the South and Midwest as severe thunderstorms blowing eastward become supercharged. ATLANTA (AP) — U.S. government forecasters are using a relatively rare “high-risk” designation — the highest category they use — to warn that a major tornado outbreak appears likely Wednesday in an area that’s home to about 2.5 million people.

The Norman, Oklahoma-based Storm Prediction Center says that “multiple long-track EF3+ tornadoes, appear likely.” Tornadoes of that magnitude are among the strongest on the Enhanced Fujita scale, used to rate their intensity.

Historically, the “high-risk” designation has been used sparingly, but it did appear just a couple of weeks ago to warn of a deadly tornado outbreak in mid-March.

The Storm Prediction Center uses five categories to warn of expected severe weather, ranging from marginal to high. Its forecast maps are color-coded, with the lowest risk areas in green and the highest shown in magenta.
