Screens are no longer just a box to set on a table, plug in, and watch. Screens are a surface. They cover desks, walls, computers, telephones, and walls. They cover areas to convey information about the environment. They cover areas to brand a space, to entertain an audience, to transform a space. Screens immerse us in fabricated, artificial experiences, even outside the movie theatre. Screens transform simple handheld objects into complex media interfaces, such as phones and tablet computers. The capacity for screens and accompanying interfaces to transform objects and environments grows so quickly that this single development vies for one of the most transformative forces in our environment in the 21st century. It is a way to bring the vision of cyberspace, that is, the world of the Internet, into everyday life. The Internet, and audiovisual media in general, becomes an increasingly powerful fixture in our minute-to-minute existence. This would not be possible without screens.
Screens bridge the gap between the invisible signals pulsing inside computers and our human world of sensual experience. And what is fine art if not sensual experience?
Moving painting is an emerging genre of art designed specifically for use on screens. Also called video painting, dynamic painting, ambient painting, and ambient video, this medium exploits the ubiquity and affordability of screens and monitors. Evoking the western tradition of oil painting, these compositions are designed with form, shape, color, and narrative with the added element of time. Unlike traditional video art and film, the works are designed to be utilized daily in a living space. They are displayed on the wall as a traditional painting would be shown using flat screen or projection technology.

Moving Painting has been a quietly progressing genre for over one hundred years, in independent film, creative animation, video art, and new media and television installations. Not until the 21st century with the commercial availability of the flat screen and compact high-definition playback and projectors did moving painting become codified as an art form qualitatively different than other art forms displayed on a screen. The form factor of the flat screen allows this medium to be installed in a living space elegantly, blending into most any room. Instead of a large, unsightly cathode ray television heaved into a corner, the flat screen rests unobtrusively in a living space, offering a large, brilliantly colored and brightly lit canvas. Playback technology, ranging from solid-state hardware that plays from hard drives, memory cards, to live video streaming servers, high-definition imagery is possible on these screens with no visible hardware. The illusion of an “electric canvas” is now complete, affordable, and practical. This electric canvas brings together interior design and video playback to pave the way for a new kind of moving image different from film, video, or television: the moving image as fine art.
]]>There are a handful of topics in this book that some geniuses are historically terrible at, and communication is one of them. Henry Ford was a genius at communication, however, and made it a point of his personality and business. In a world before pagers and cell phones, he even went to the trouble of having buttons installed on his desk that summoned all his primary executives, managers, and thinkers as needed. They would come to his office and he would work things out with them. Like Ford, we can invite people into our room and exceed the communication skills of those lunkheaded geniuses we’ve heard about.

There are a few habits that can get in the way of good communication. Talking fast and incessantly. (Try and remember the power of brevity in Kennedy’s “NEED SMALL BOAT”.) If your engine runs hot try and check your mania at the door during conversations. The person you’re talking to will thank you for it. If you’re enamored of yourself you can forget that you’re talking to another person altogether. Those conversations tend not to go well either so here is where a dose of humility and acknowledgement can help. Letting depression and low self-esteem sideline your point of view is just as damaging since the other person won’t know what you have to say if you’re too shy to say it. Remind yourself that you’re worth hearing and speak up enough to be heard.
]]>Understanding someone is about stepping into their shoes and deeply comprehending their point of view. This does not mean a polite exchange about the weather. It means wanting to know their situation and how they feel about it. Enjoying someone is hearing the real meaning behind someone’s words so you can appreciate the person, their humor, and their spirit. It doesn’t mean waiting for your turn to talk; it reflects a desire to really get to know the person, even in a small way. Learning something requires a certain humility, to set aside your preconceptions and open yourself to what the person has to say. Giving help and solace means taking time out of your day to offer support. For all these intentions, the foundation of real listening is having a genuine interest in what the other person has to say. Here’s are some tips on how to be a great listener:
Being quiet is a good start in listening but there’s more to it. All of these points involve attention on the speaker and what they are trying to convey. We need to communicate to the person that we are listening while we listen. We ask questions in order to better understand what is being said. Eschew work and other parts of our life while we are listening; there is nothing more valuable in this situation than our attention. Our internal thoughts and feelings will try and intrude and we mustn’t let them.

For many years the focus of the moving image was on film and television, but when artists discovered portable video cameras, things began to change. Video production was no longer expensive.
“The framed screen of the television set could be a transformative space for painting and, me being the first video generation, the first television generation to grow up (I was also a painter and I grew up studying painting and sculpture) spending vast amounts of time in front of the TV. It was natural for me, once I was immersed in the conceptual pool of contemporary art in the mid-70s, to immediately gravitate to the moving image. I made a very conscious decision in 1975-76, and I just picked up the camera, a Portapack, to take a lot of the things I was painting that were really frustrating me because they were, in some profound way, feeling dated and hopelessly mired in art’s historical antecedents, and make them come alive when I was able to move things in time and space and animate them inside the TV frame. That said, I was also interested in turning the whole thing inside out again as soon as I got inside the picture frame.“ – Tony Oursler

Because of the pervasiveness of the film genre however, and a few other reasons, moving painting did not begin to flourish until the 21st century. Two developments sped things along: the arrival of the flat screen television, and the increase in computer power. The flat screen TV looks like nothing if not a digital canvas. Now that this is the mainstream form of TV, wiping the older cathode ray tubes off the planet in less than a two decades, this display unit provides unique opportunities for the digital artist. The second development is the critical mass of PC power. Memory and computing power becoming affordable enough to permit professional grade video production workstations at prices accessible to the ambitious artist. This led, too, to the development of affordable video editing software, powerful suites of tools allowing all manner of manipulation and combining of moving images. Combined with the affordability of the high definition video camera, we now live in an age of hi-fi video ubiquity: powerful screens everywhere you look sporting millions of colors in high definitions and the tools to bring content to them.
Anne Spalter, artist, collector, and author of The Computer in the Visual Arts explains, “Not so long ago, there was enormous political risk. Artist and galleries had to fight tooth and nail to convince people that this was, in fact, art. Now people are used to seeing screens everywhere, they communicate through their smart phone and laptops–the fear of the technology is greatly diminished. “
Like traditional painting, most moving painting is strong on visual composition. The shapes and lines interlock to create composition and form. Visual dialects of color and gesture vary but bear much resemblance to the tongues spoken by generations of oil painters.
]]>The printing press was the world’s first global information super-highway. The invention of the Gutenberg Press resulted in the proliferation of etchings, monoprints, monotypes, and seminal fine art techniques such as single-color shading, or chiaroscuro. Advanced by artists such as Dürer, printing fundamentally changed the way artwork is disseminated, bought, and sold.
The industrialization of art materials, the invention of synthetic chemical pigments and the conveniently portable tin tubes used to hold them, cut a time-consuming step out of the painting process, the manufacture of paint by the artist, allowing the artist to focus on the expressive use of these durable, brilliant new colors. These advances gave birth to Impressionism and, subsequently, Cubism and Abstract Expressionism.
The manufacture of scientific equipment resulted in professional-grade lenses which were used in the design of cameras. What began as a hobbyist’s sport was shaped, in the hands of dedicated proponents such as Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams, into a serious and expressive art form: photography.
Portable video cameras such as Portapak and Super 8 became available to New York artists in the 1960’s resulting in a gritty medium designed for display on television and screens: video art.
Curator and director of Boston Cyberarts George Fifield explains, “Today video art has turned into a different thing – but in its history, video art was, in many cases, a reaction against television”
Television screens continue to undergo transformations, from cathode ray tubes to plasma screens, to the current generations of LCD and LED-based flat screens. In the same way that oil paint has proven durable, the moving image is now in its second century and shows no signs of waning. The recent flattening of the screen’s form factor supplies a canvas for moving images. Artists labor to explore this medium and lay a foundation for 21st century art. It remains to be seen how the art market will absorb these advances but their importance gathers momentum with each passing exhibition of moving paintings and moving painting-like works.

Rivera: This is the best anniversary I could have imagined, Frida. Thank you.

Kahlo: You’re obsessed, Diego, and I love that about you but here, take this brush. We’re going to paint a beautiful mural in our dining room together. It will have reds and browns and all the colors we love. We will paint trunks and roots of the forest of our love together!
Rivera: Please leave me be, mi pajarito.
Kahlo’s loving idea may have been wonderful in a different context, but her husband was already stressed out by a commission and didn’t want casual painting interruptions.
Imagination isn’t always disastrous for relationships. It can also help them to flourish. It just needs to be used judiciously.

Rivera: You don’t want a new chair? Why are you ungrateful? I know that you will love it.
Most conversations are not speeches, or at least they shouldn’t be. This goes also for conflict resolution, which is largely about listening. The number of times where straight up listening is required in human communication compared to imagination makes imagination barely necessary in effective communication sometimes.

[The imagination brainstorms new ideas which can be collected and recorded in an Idea Queue.]
Eventually, without a control on the imagination, the ideas become plentiful and have no quality control. This can become a burden rather than a boon. There is a need for some kind of control on the process. I’ll refer to this control as idea evaluation, a process to access the usefulness of a new product of the imagination. If it’s useful, then idea evaluation keeps it. If not, it discards it. I’m talking an approach where new ideas are brainstormed then run through a series of critical reviews and the candidates that make it through the gauntlet are pursued. Idea evaluation looks like this.

When creative ideas for new projects or major changes to existing projects present themselves, they can be documented somehow: written down, sketched, recorded (Idea Queue). At a later point they can be reviewed to see if they are worthwhile ideas. A pause in time before the idea is evaluated is often enough for objectivity to determine the usefulness of the concept. Once the idea passes this first review, it is then placed in another queue as a potentially actionable approach (Pass Queue). This pass queue is then periodically reviewed and anything that passes at that point can be made a likelihood for action.
]]>[Glenn Gould, the notable Canadian pianist, sang while he played. This was a way for him to stay engaged with the medium. His singing can be heard on his professional recordings. Recording engineers attempted to build a box around the front of the piano to try and isolate the sound of him singing but Gould tore it apart and continued singing. He needed to sing in order to engage with his instrument and with his music. His baritone singing is a part of a Gould recording.]
The more deeply we are engaged, the more deeply we will master our craft. How can you sing while you work? What is the best way for you to engage with your medium?
You may not use these approaches precisely and I’m sure you’ve devised some of your own. These techniques are here to foment your thinking about skill-building.

This pyramid represents the journey towards excellence in a field, beginning at the bottom as an Initiate then working your way towards the top towards Master. The more time you spend acquiring a skillset, the more skilled you’ll become, putting you in a smaller and smaller group of peers as you move up the pyramid. Many people have engaged with a medium to achieve a mundane level of achievement. There are a very small number of masters.
Are geniuses born or made? This is a key question if you’re trying to do something big in the world.
[“The first study for the man that wants to be a poet is true complete knowledge of himself: he looks for his soul; examines it, tests it, learns it. As soon as he knows it, he must develop it! That seems simple: a natural development takes place in every brain: so many egoists proclaim themselves authors: there are plenty of others who attribute their intellectual progress to themselves! – But the soul must be made monstrous: after the fashion of the comprachicos, yes! Imagine a man planting and cultivating warts on his face.” – Arthur Rimbaud writes in a letter to his friend Paul Demeny]
In his dramatic fashion the young poet seems to say that we can invent ourselves by cultivating the seeds of our own becoming. He does not seem to be saying that how we turn out is left to chance. Making ourselves brilliant, beautiful, or monstrous is best left up to the sower.
Rimbaud is notable because he was sixteen years old at the height of his achievements. He is a prodigy who is claiming to have some understanding of how he developed, and he claims to have developed himself. I agree with Rimbaud, that anyone can cultivate their own genius. It just requires work.
[You have to spend a very long time engaged in this acquisition of domain-specific expertise. You can’t do it in a single year, or even in 5 years. On the contrary, you need a full decade of devotion to expertise acquisition before you have what it takes to make your mark in the world. We refer to this as the 1—year rule. No decade of dedicated training, no genius! – Dean Keith Simonton (3)]
[Research on high achievers has proven that no one can escape a long period of apprenticeship, starting as a mere ignorant novice.(4)]

What is a genius? It depends on who you ask. There are quite a few definitions of a genius out there. Here are the main ones. A genius is a person who has:
There’s the IQ genius, sometimes referred to as a psychometric genius, a person whose psychology is used to measure their genius. Next there is the genius of deeds, sometimes referred to as the historiometric genius, a person whose ability is measured by their performance over time.

This could be further simplified; there are two types of geniuses: smart and accomplished. Plenty of smart people aren’t accomplished (we’ve never heard of them) and plenty of accomplished people aren’t the smartest. For example, Darwin is estimated to have had an IQ as low as 135(2). At the end of the day, however, deeds speak louder than test results. What good is intelligence if the person doesn’t do anything of import with it? Society confers titles upon individuals to reflect its relationship to that person. We say: that person is a celebrity. Or, he is a criminal. Or, she is a saint. The title of genius is societally conferred:
What a genius!
Psychometric geniuses still have something to prove and there is only one kind of genius worth their salt, and that is the kind that accomplishes notable and serviceable feats. Yes, that statement challenges the role of intelligence in genius. More on that later.

If you fall into the IQ genius category and you haven’t any intention of putting it to good use beyond winning at chess and poker, then this book is not for you. If you are interested in making good on the promise of your high IQ then read on.

In no case do I enumerate a person that thinks or says that they are a genius. There are, of course, self-proclaimed geniuses that are actually geniuses (ex. Salvador Dali) but in my book, genius is a title to be earned.

So what is a genius? What’s important is what it means to you.
These are feats in seemingly completely unrelated fields. Ives’ attention detail, his problem-solving skills, and his creativity led him to write both compositions and business tools that stand the test of time. Not to mention his success as a business owner. Although this may not be enough to qualify Ives as a Renaissance Man, he demonstrated an ability to cross over disciplines. The types of creative hybrid thought that can happen due to work in multiple fields shouldn’t be underrated. There are many such examples of advantages in multi-classing.
Advantages
There is a certain sense of repetitiveness that can set in when you’ve been practicing the same field for many, many years. Learning something new helps to allay the ennui and gives one something to be excited about once more. It can renew one’s sense of wonder and make everything seem fresh again. It also provides a new set of challenges so you can feel like a beginner once again and tackle simple challenges easily before moving onto the more complex problems in a field. In a word, it’s fun. There’s the matter of study of the new field.
Education
Depending upon the result you desire, you can approach different fields differently. Here is the range of approaches from an educational standpoint
There are advantages and disadvantages to each approach. Formal study provides a solid foundation putting you on similar footing as others entering your field. You are imbued with all of the skills, and understanding, and assumptions, and traditional habits as well. Assumptions require work to correct and replace with discovery. Habits require work to correct and replace with original technique. The more self-taught you are, the more you’re discovering for yourself and developing original technique. Self-taught pupils, on the other hand, can exhibit insufficient technique and their understanding of the field can be less thorough than their schooled peers. You see the tradeoffs.
Painter Francis Bacon couldn’t draw and was self-conscious about that fact. Drawing is often touted as a necessary foundation of painting and there are plenty of examples to support this: Van Gogh, Degas, Delacroix, etc. Somehow Bacon still does extraordinary work. I suspect it is his imagination that pulls him through. It certainly isn’t his painting technique, which is coarse and inconsistent. But his resulting imagery is dazzling, without formal schooling.
Leverage
You’ll find the change must easier if you can find ways to leverage your existing career before you undertake a new one. Perhaps there are disciplines in common? Similar foundational classes? Or perhaps the same schools teach both fields? Look for individuals that are known in both fields. In short, seek commonalities and leverage them. (In my book I cover the drawing of parallels between disciplines.)
Expect to make some mistakes in your new field. If you really must multi-class, do it with gusto or not at all.

Even when the idea of digital data as objet d’art is accepted, there is still the question of how to package, buy, and sell digital art. Digital files can be transferred for sale in two ways: by the changing hands of physical media or by download. Download is the moving of a digital file from one physical media to another using the Internet.

As consumers, digital media has changed the way we think of “possession”. The frequent use, download, and purchase of digital media has familiarized us with the buying of and using of things where we never need to see the actual thing. What we use is how the thing works on a device. At least when we bought a tape, CD, or DVD, there was a physical object to possess. Those days are coming swiftly to an end and downloadable digital media is becoming the norm. The time has come for this to impact our age-old concept of objet d’art.
Kurt Ralske explains: “The big problem is: art objects are expensive because they’re exclusive and unique. The painting by a dead artist is the most exclusive object and the most expensive one. A digital file, which can be duplicated indefinitely, will be worth way less. A screen isn’t really an object, a screen is just a device. For some artists, the way around this practical problem of “How do I sell screen-based work?” is to make the screen into an unique art object. By some unusual framing, or by its role as a part of an installation, the video becomes unique. Also, there are ways of presenting the image that are more creative than the stereotypical screen presentation. The video might be a funny size: it’s very big, or very small, or requires some special setup. Though they are harder to distribute, these objects and installations more likely to attract critical interest, and command a higher price in an art gallery.”
Of course, as art displayed on a screen is made to be an objet d’art, the line is blurred between the object and the technology.

With traditional mediums, such as oil painting, sculpture, even photography, the medium is the object. The material which causes the image to be transferred to the eye is an integral part of the artwork. With the use of screens in artwork, this issue becomes complicated. The artwork is primarily the digital information which contains the artwork, but the visual manifestation is a device manufactured in Asia. On a properly installed moving painting, the device goes unnoticed and only the artwork is perceived. This is part of the art and the illusion of the moving painting.
The objet d’art intersects with the world of digital art creating a portal through which the medium of electricity, code, and pixels can be experienced by the viewer as a complete and unified work of art. There is no device, only medium. There is no code, only experience. There is no electricity, only the transcendence of artistic message. This is what digital artists strive for in the creation of objects d’art and this is the promise of the moving painting.

A viewer’s ability to respond to an artwork is in direct proportion to the number and quality of human decisions that went into that artwork. This runs counter to the Duchamp school of readymade art, but is my position. That is a problem for computer art and will continue to be a problem until we have successfully taught computers how to feel.

Video and animation software provides a vast range of filters and algorithms designed to make a commercial artist’s life easier by automating visual decisions to produce a quick technically correct result. This automation takes small-scale visual decisions out of the artists hands, eroding the emotional and intellectual power that artist may have had. This problem has been compounded by the exponential growth of computing power, as video software developers wield this power with increasing creativity and frequency, providing automatic effects which transform any source content into briefly engaging eye candy. Unaware or unheeding of this trap, artists can easily produce large swaths of artificial content appearing visually complex but signifying nothing.
Artist Brian Knep solves it this way, “ I do most of my thinking on paper. So I tend to work not at a computer. If I work on a computer I get distracted. I’m drawing, I have a little journal, I draw, I write. I sketch out ideas.”
“The second way I do it is that I spend a lot of time making the interface to my work very intuitive. So there’s the piece, right? While the piece is running I can bring up a little interface where I change all the variables. Lots of people do this kind of thing. Say I have a variable called “speed”, the speed of the piece and when that’s color and when that’s size, of blobs. So the piece is running and I have a wireless keyboard, so I can work right in the piece, and I hit return and up in the corner comes up size and a number and with the arrow keys I can very quickly play with it. My program itself has a constrained interface. So I’m writing in C++ or Python or whatever I’m writing in and that’s very complicated but in there I put a lot of very easy ways to change all of the parameters in it…It lets me see in that way: “this feels too big”. I hit a key and boom, it’s better. “
“When you’re a potter you learn to make your own tools, particularly in the Japanese style, you make all your own tools. It becomes very personal. You make tools that fit the shape of your hands and fit the shape of the type of pots that you make. I am making tools. I learned as a tool-builder. I studied math and computer science. I was a tool-builder in academia. I was a tool-builder in the special effects industry. … There’s a part of me that loves that. I enjoy building systems and using them to create things… The building of the tool, there’s an elegance to it that I appreciate, even if you the visitor will never see that. To me there’s a joy in that.” – Brian Knep
The Screensaver Trap is so prevalent that it can induce an oversensitivity in evaluation of works. Robert Seidel says “They sometimes believe that the art is generated solely by some clever software: just hit some keys, and the work is done… most of the time it is months of work.”
The Screensaver Trap can be avoided through human intervention. Human decisions in a work of art determine the human response. Artist’s should show us their hand, the artist’s hand. This can be done through seeing physical evidence of artistic intervention, or by the creation of systems involving human decision-making.
Software art offers a broad array of types of artwork, some of which is meant to be fully commandeered and rendered by the computer. This is called generative or aleatoric art. The workmanship that goes into generative art must be distinguished carefully from screensavers, typically on goals, quality, and effect.

]]>Boston Cyberarts and the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority have teamed up to create “Art on the Marquee,” an ongoing project to commission public media art for display on the new 80-foot-tall multi-screen LED marquee outside the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in South Boston. The largest urban screen in New England, this unique digital canvas is one of the first of its kind in the U.S. to integrate art alongside commercial and informational content as part of the MCCA’s longstanding neighborhood art program.
Traditional visual art involves the translation of three dimensional elements into two dimensional space. Early painters took the leap into perspective, depth, and form, and much of Western fine art has delved deeper. This translation requires many abbreviations, summations, cut corners, and visual decisions. Much of the expression and creative license in fine art happens during this process. The genesis of painting as fine art can be marked almost precisely with the beginning of this translation by liturgical painters such as Giotto. Literal adherence to horizon line perspective defined Classicism. Departure from literal translations between 3D and 2D resulted in many of the important aspects of Impressionism and most of Cubism. Many recent art movements owe their existence to this translation taken to the extreme, the ‘flat’ movements in the mid to late 20th century including Minimalism and Pop Art. The 21st century continuation of this trend is called ‘superflat’.
Today, in 3D computer graphics we use a literal approach to this process where the computer traces the paths of light rays. Graphics software uses algorithms to model light particle physics resulting in our image. Virtual photons emanate from virtual light sources, bounce off of virtual objects with simulated reflective textures and enter a simulated retina.
Computers are now handling most of this translation from 3D to 2D.
If much of the creativity and expression in visual art is involved in the handing of the 3D to 2D translation, what will happen to our centuries-old language of shapes and colors when delegated to a computer to run a photon simulation?

How do line, shape, and color behave when the gates of Time are suddenly opened to them?
I suggest that even the most skilled artisans have only just begun to explore this question. The prevalence of narrative in moving mediums has marginalized this question for many years. Of course a great film does wonders with line, shape, and color over time, but ultimately, it’s a film, and we’re there to get to know the characters and discover their fates. This question cannot be answered properly when narrative takes precedence. This is not a new conflict. We’ve seen it for centuries in the categorization of still images as paintings or illustrations. Although there is still a small, debated overlap, by and large illustrations are defined by What they depict rather than How. The power of paintings resides in How the depiction is made, through the heightened use of line, shape, and color(among other things). I argue that a similar distinction can be made regarding film and moving painting.
True moving paintings will make expert use of the How. Line, shape, and color as they proceed through time will form the basis for that.

What is it with the incessant lamentation that artists didn’t “get what they deserved while they were alive”?
It’s probably their own fault, so knock it off.
Take note of the artists who sought attention in their own time compared to those who did not. What sense does it make to mourn those who didn’t bother asking for recognition? Didn’t they get exactly what they asked for? Van Gogh detested marketing and business and was quite clear that he wished to “leave a memento before he died” as he did not “care much for his own life”. He got exactly what he wished for, did not ask for sympathy, and does not deserve any. If recognition was important to him, he could have gotten himself out of the boondocks and worked his substantial connections in Paris one or two months out of the year instead of pining and whining to his brother via mail. He had years to do this before he became ill. Van Gogh’s level of recognition in his lifetime was his own fault, and for people to continue to absolve him is ludicrous and doesn’t help living artists at all. It perpetuates the belief that promotional sloth for an artist is OK, even admirable!, even though Picasso, Dali, O’Keefe et. al. proved otherwise. O’Keefe is a perfect example. She did good, hard work out in the boondocks, New Mexico, then married into the hub of contemporary oil painting in the United States, Alfred Stieglitz in New York City. Say what you will about her motivations in that marriage but she got what she asked for: recognition of good work in her lifetime.
Artists choose their path. They tend to be intelligent people. They know that their life decisions have consequences. If they want stability they can become lawyers and doctors. Many forego respectable jobs, powerful family connections, and some are even trust fund babies! Stop pretending they don’t know what they are doing when they choose not to bother with recognition.
I suppose that brilliant dead artists are our “mythos”. They are “gods” that we characterize as underworshipped in their own day. So we have sympathy for them. Even if they never asked for it or if it’s too late to make a difference to them. We do it for us, because it makes us feel valiant. “If so-and-so were alive today I would appreciate her!” No you wouldn’t. You’d ignore her along with everyone else and pay attention to whomever is in the newspaper, magazine, blog, or whatever you deem a reliable source for who is “important”. If you really want to break out of this. If you really mean it. Start ignoring the news and the “arbiters of taste” and start thinking for yourself. If you’re already doing this, I am grateful to you. If you’re an artist, the ball is in your court.
You can’t help Van Gogh, but you can help the bright, promising artist down the street who is alive to appreciate your support.

My ability to execute my creative ideas is far outstripped by my volume of thoughts of possible art to come. Therefore I present my first speculative essay. The topic is the use of computers to advance the practice of music composition and performance:
Due to it’s mathematical roots, music lends itself well to use in computing. Western classical music notation is discrete in nature with pitch, duration, dynamics, and phrasing meticulously spelled out for the performer. The framework of music theory and counterpoint both can be reduced to more or less mathematical relationships. 20th century twelve tone and tone clusters are, of course, mostly completely mathematical in nature to the point of being arguably musical. Even instrumental idiosyncrasies and ensemble approaches and relationships used to balance music between individual instruments, octaves, and sections can be modeled and represented in numeric and abstract terms. The compositional rules which govern the writing for a single instrument or group of instruments closely resembles an “interface” in object-oriented programming. Notation could be said to trigger “methods” and set “properties” of the instrumental treatment.
All this to say that we can teach a computer a great deal about music without losing much in the translation. Design patterns for many aspects of music can be derived and boiled down to algorithms. If this were accomplished, the next step would be to impress upon the machine higher-level considerations of musical form and style, rhythmic and melodic fashions of different ages. Then provide a tremendous amount of raw material, musical data for the machine to digest and learn from, comparing it’s models to reality and allowing it to adjust the models to it’s own satisfaction.
The most challenging consideration would be the introduction of the idea of emotion in music. I wonder if this has been attempted with much seriousness or success. First we might codify the body of emotional attitudes expressed through music, most of which are defined by their Italian or German names. Then the delicate procedure of performance approaches would be needed and here the water becomes deep indeed. It is unclear what defines the human concept of musical shape in emotional terms. Perhaps we might start with patterns of phrase and multi-phrase shapes, cuing on dynamics in relation to contrapuntal and harmonic context. Here we move into intangibles which must be demystified. What, exactly, is a turn of phrase? How, in precise terms, is a single note held without becoming static? In a piece with thousands of notes, what holds it together from moment to moment and from beginning to end? At this point the many simplified models and algorithms regarding melody, harmony, dynamics, phrase, and all the other variables available in music begin to work together in enormously complex ways to result in effective musical phrases, movements, and pieces. Most critical is the idea that emotion is a feedback of information. A composer or musician responds emotionally to their own output, adjusting their output accordingly to moderate this response, this “feeling”. It could be said that great compositions or great performances are not producing audio information as their end result, they are producing a response in the listener. I contend that machines will only be able to stimulate us intellectually through music when they have learned to stimulate us emotionally. In order to achieve this they must be taught to feel. Additionally, they must be taught to learn from experience to develop their ability to differentiate feelings and place them at their disposal for their use in music. I realize this is getting more than a bit sci-fi but this is precisely where this line of inquiry leads us and we have the means at our disposal to experiment with this.
So in order to build musically effective machines, we must first teach them the mechanics of music then give them a way to respond emotionally to their own sounds.

]]>His work recently showed on the world’s largest LCD display, mounted on the Seoul Square Building in Korea. The screen stands at 78 meters (256 feet) high, stretching 99 meters wide and covering a total 7,722 square meters (83,118 square feet). The display is made up of 42,000 LEDs fixed into Spanish terracotta tiles which cover the entire 19 floors of the Seoul Square building. The exhibit runs until Sept. 27th.

The Lytro camera employs a breakthrough technology called a microlens array to gather a significantly larger amount of data with each shot. The photographer, or others, can later sift through this data using computer tools, adjusting the focus point of the picture in post-production. The concept was first proposed by the founder of Lytro, Ren Ng, in his computer science dissertation in 2006 at Standford University. The paper won the Association of Computing Machinery’s worldwide competition that year. Now Mr. Ng is working to translate the idea into a saleable camera technology. The possibilities for the digital camera market as well as the 3D market are promising.
For the world of art this could mean cameras, and later, video cameras, that capture an order of magnitude more visual information, allowing the artist to explore different focus points later in the studio, or allowing the viewer to do so interactively in an installation.

The dramatic glass-enclosed Waterfront Square Atrium at Atlantic Wharf in downtown Boston is the site of an exhibition of slow-moving dynamic digital painting, digital animation, and algorithmically generated software that explores fluid dynamics and digital and artificial life. Works included by Brian Knep, Andrew Neumann, Robert Arnold, Dennis Miller and Dan Hermes. An unusual number of moving paintings are on display in this exhibition. Eric Sanner, another moving painter is exhibiting at Mobius this month.

Anne Spalter’s digital video drawing, “Fracture”, shown at Stephan Stoyanov’s gallery in NYC in Feb 2011, has been acquired by the Albright-Knox museum in Buffalo NY. ‘It’s permanent collection, which includes works by most of the great artists of the late 19th and the 20th centuries, as well as many emerging artists, has been cited as one of the world’s top international surveys of modern and contemporary painting and sculpture.’

Drawing with Code: Works from the Anne and Michael Spalter Collection is a computer-generated art exhibition at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in early 2011. Pieces date from 1952 to 2007 and draw on twentieth century visual art inspiration, bold color juxtaposition, strong visual composition, and shapes speaking for themselves and largely devoid of cultural reference, social implication, or conceptual angle. Many artists in the exhibit identify collectively as “Algorists”, artists whose work is based on mathematical algorithms. All the works in this exhibit were produced using computer programs.
George Fifield, the curator of the exhibit, begins the journey with a counterpoint of curvaceous oscilloscope works by Ben F. Laposky against a plotted-line fugue of squares by Vera Molnar. Laposky’s stills caught a dancer-like figure in mid-gesture with the markedly un-artistic device of the oscilloscope while Molnar’s orderly black squares devolved into a cacophony of orange polygons similar to an ancient Chinese horizontal scroll art technique to achieve a time-based, film-like effect. Both achieved a strong sense of motion with a still image.

Impossible to overlook in this exhibition is the missing “hand of the artist”. Since this exhibit deliberately includes works that required actual programming of a computer to produce, the sense that a human being produced the marks on these pages is diminished if not absent. Pre-Impressionist painting largely sought to avoid any obvious signs of the artist’s brushstrokes and the consistency of the image was paramount. In the past one hundred years, however, visible evidence of the painter’s presence became desirable, oft described as “painterly”. In spite of this former trend, a new trend is upon us: humans, machines, and our output are gradually becoming unified. Successful content in any medium now depends entirely upon the blurring of flesh and metal, axioms firing in tandem with the CPU, our eyes enhanced by RGB monitors and our appendages mouse-extensible. Many of the auto-generated works were subsequently silk-screened, perhaps to lend a “handmade” quality to the works? If that was the intent, it worked at least as well than ever it did for Warhol, the “rehumanization” of factory-machined artwork.
A reflection of this more contemporary trend, the “hand of the artist” in this exhibition takes on a different form: the mark of the machine. Distinctive oscilloscope tracks, inkjet characters, plotter vectors, and both Cartesian and Polar graph structures. These are the marks of computers in the 70’s, 80’s, and decreasingly, the 90’s. As pixel size decreases and pixel count increases, computer graphics technology gallops towards the ideal which will finally fool our retina’s rods and cones into perceiving computer-generated imagery as real. By and large, this exhibit made clear that in this aesthetic reality, the computers unapologetically make the visual rules and our eyes are compelled to obey.
Manuel Barbadillo commits to the computer’s mark as a foundational particle in his Untitled, 1972, the entire work rendered from a single ASCII character, the asterisk: *. A handful of these white characters on a brown background form the atomic motif of a curved leaf or wave. This shape is repeated on the points of the compass and between to create a complex mandala reminiscent of an asterisk. This is a stark example of a meme self-replicating naturally into more complex structures and grammars then bloom into elaborate concepts and vocabularies. Marks mature into mediums.

Vera Molnar plots squares and their polygonal kin in keeping with evolution and mutation. Meticulous spacing and shading of square against square, square within square, and the gradual crookeding of the square into asymmetry: almost-but-not-quite-square inside almost-but-not-quite-square. Manfried Mohr examines this grammar, too, with fastidious devotion: the deconstruction of the symmetric polygon into all of it’s asymmetric cousins, using the very tool of symmetric construction to demarcate and plot the demise of shapes: the x-y axis. Mohr’s work springs forth from the xy axis as a fountainhead, an anchor, a home key from which to modulate. While the asymmetry of individual shapes may diverge and compete with one another, their unified bifurcation along the horizontal, the vertical, or both, allows them to share the canvas in harmony. As Darwin showed that life is infinite generative design, so does Mohr examines imaginary variations of life with his own flavor of generative mutation: flower petals as yet unbloomed, hard-edged leaves, branches, and trees in a curveless, Euclidean greenhouse.

From the black and white beginnings of Mohr, Desmond Paul Henry, and Edward Zajec, the colorists in this exhibition bloom with all the tenacity and unity of the Fauves. Silkscreen technique affords the bold, low-resolution primaries of Hiroshi Kawano’s Untitled, 1972, the bright oranges and and reds of George Nees Untitled, 1972, and the layered primaries in Frieder Nake’s Untitled, 1972. Increasingly subtle and complex use of color unfolds throughout the exhibition.

Wireframes, the grid that graphical computers splay across every surface, enable a machine’s sense of form . The addition of the Z axis brought computers into the human visual realm of three dimensions. Evenly spaced contour lines are the elastic rulers of the digital age, measuring form and space with mathematical precision. By removing the x-axis, Sture Johannessen, in Untitled, 1979, isolate the Y and Z axis, the entire work is rendered with a single, unbroken line, tracing the Braille-like surface of a single, rounded text character, the section symbol: §.

The wireframe appears at least once in all but one room of the show. Sven Hoglund and Bror Wikstorm’s cube-like solid faces a broken, meandering strip a half-inch wide in the diptych Untitled, 1979. Jean-Pierre Hebert soothes us with unmechanically delicate black, white, and sandy-hued spirals of shallow wireframe topography in a series of three untitled plotter works .(1995, 1997, 2001) Desmond Paul Henry reveals the only “hand of the artist” in the entire exhibit, embellishing a collection of interlaid wireframes in Androbulus, 1962 with black and white ink hand-applied in long, painterly daubs. This crude effect is nonetheless arresting and engaging against the wireframe foundation, as gauche can electrify charcoal, or a wash reinforces ink. Again we experience the effects of the rehumanization of computer-generated material. Rehumanization is a common technique across mediums and disciplines utilizing computer-generated content. Composers for film and television know that the addition of a single natural instrument performed by a human being can enliven and transform an entire artificial orchestra.
Symmetry and parallel lines are distinctive marks of a machine. Though plotter drawings can lend a sense of the human hand to a work, since a mechanical hand of sorts grips a real ink-bearing pen, and the vector lines are nuanced enough to generate smooth curves, plotter precision and tireless repetition evoke, too, the weaver’s mechanical loom. Verostko’s Untitled, 2006, depicts a pink draped woven cloth with prominent yellow fringe. Close inspection belies that the folds are not random but the result of a single line motif repeated over and over with slight variations and sizes. Every thread of the work bears some relationship to this single curvy-lined motif, a visual woven canon. Using a similar motivic approach, the artist’s second work in the exhibit, Untitled, 1990, could also have been created with threads, not woven but bunched, crumpled, and splayed in heaps and gnarled lumps. This is the only symmetrical work in the exhibit, but the predictability stops there. This bright, furry, Rorschach vision propels this exhibit into the surreal.

Mark Wilson brings this exhibition into resounding final cadences with large, masterful tapestries of color, composition, and space. Wilson steers us into the third dimension with a firm hand. Though the elements in these works are still distinctly two dimensional, their angles and curvatures carve spaces deep into the canvas. The atomic characters form molecules of geometric shapes, circles, polygons, and their subdivisions. In SKEW FF10, 1984, physical references to compact discs could just as easily be stadium diagrams or hard drive partitions. The general sense of smaller things filling larger things is undeniable. Composed entirely of typeset font-based characters, the mark of the machine is nowhere more apparent than in Mark Wilson’s work. A counterpoint to Molnar’s scroll-like study of squares in three colors, Structures de quadrilateres, 1986, Wilson’s study of circles, P9232, 2007, displays added layers of compositional consideration in a banquet of shapes and color. Less measured in material, treatment, and negative space than classically-inspired artists such as Mohr or Nake, Wilson embodies the modern Baroque, spoiling us with candy-wrapper-colored sprays of cloisonné, mosaic, or stained glass. The evolution of the “hand of the artist” and the adoption and acceptance of the “mark of the machine” is an ancient theme. Major technological advances cause the obsolescence of older technologies or manual techniques: Hand-written books gave way to the printing press. Hand-mixed oil paints vanished in lieu of factory-produced pigments sold in a tube. Stage performances evolved into live television and radio, then into recordings. The list is long. Proponents and stakeholders of the old method naturally resist the change until resistance is futile or is quelled naturally by the passing on of vested parties. Younger generations adopt new ideas and technologies more easily than the old guard, sometimes too easily, which is why the counterbalance of elder wisdom is important. Flying machines are an excellent example of a technology that failed to deliver on it’s promise for a long, long time, sending many visionaries and their machines plummeting to their deaths.
Technology-inspired artists, curators, academics, teachers, and collectors also play this delicate game of trying to fly towards the sun without succumbing to aesthetic peril. This exhibit of works from the Anne and Michael Spalter Collection documents a dizzying ascent.

Framed moving digital paintings range in size from six inches to sixty inches for single screen installations. Forty plus sized screens are arresting from a dozen feet awayand sixty inch screens can draw a viewer into a large room, such as a lobby or penthouse.Multiple screen installations can occupy an entire wall, or an entire hallway—bounded only by the designers imagination. Clients find that multiple screens can tie aspace together with an unforgettable room-sized multimedia experience with all the subtlety and grace of traditional canvassed art. Projection works well in a space with exposed walls and low light. Careful integration with surrounding details transforms a space into a room-sized moving sculpture. Multiple projections can wrap an entire space in a constantly evolving environment of shapeand color. Spa and club applications are particularly successful.
Licensed paintings are rendered on preexisting screens or video equipment such aspenthouse A/V theatres, bar televisions, guest room flat screens, fitness center displays,or lobby digital signage. We work with the building’s operations staff to determinethe most appropriate method of installation and integration to existing A/V systems. Clients license the use of moving digital paintings for existing screens that cry out for fine art that fits with their project vision.
