Priming the Battlefield

Battlefield fans are preparing for a new kind of experience with the FPS series, as it’s about to go multiplayer-only for this fall’s incarnation. That’s something of a gambit for EA, who of course stand the chance of alienating fans who like the series’ usual campaign offerings.

But even if that’s you, there’s a pretty rich history of BF titles for those who’ve yet to play them all. Right there with those, are both Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V. Set in WWI and II respectively, both entries in the core series are fairly recent, and are free right now for PC gamers.

Yep, the latest in Amazon’s Prime Gaming series of subscriber freebies, the two games are set to be a mini-series of free downloads. Battlefield 1 is up first, which then turns into parts V in early August. Both are timed though, so if you want them, you might want to act sooner than later.

Here’s the full description:

• Available today through August 4 – Battlefield 1 takes players across multiple and varied locations in a bid to fight through immersive battles. From tight urban fights in a besieged French city, to big open spaces in the Italian Alps and frantic combats in the deserts of Arabia, prime members can discover a world at war through an adventure-filled campaign. In a true multiplayer sandbox experience, take to the skies and engage in high-octane dogfights through treacherous landscapes, or have a battleship obliterating the coast from the sea, and engage in some of the biggest battles ever seen as empires clash for supremacy.

• Available August 2 through October 1 – Battlefield V delivers the most immersive gameplay of the franchise in a sandbox environment that takes players back in time to the battles of World War 2, allowing players to feel the force of the fight and truly shape the war as the war shapes them. Players’ soldiers can now tow stationary weapons, build fortifications and repair war-torn structures to turn the battlefield to the player’s advantage. Whether dragging a squad mate to safety or shooting a grenade out of the sky, players will forge a deeper connection to the ever-evolving world around them and achieve victory against the toughest odds. With the freedom to adapt and evolve the battlefield in new and unseen ways, the battlefield will never be the same.

Battlefield Leaks

Despite a pretty thorough showing-off of some familiar game modes and content coming to the cross-gen game when it launches in October being shown back at E3 2021, eager fans of the series are digging to try and learn more about one mode that’s listed as ‘redacted’ on the game’s website.

“Created as a love letter to our core fans, a new way to play Battlefield is coming,” reads a short description of this mystery mode. “Discover unexpected battles and enter the wide universe of Battlefield with this experience.”

With that said, famed leaker Tom Henderson has shed some light on the redacted mode fans are foaming at the mouth for.

“Battlefield Hub is going to contain remasters of maps from old Battlefield titles,” he says in a video. “It’s going to be [maps] on the Battlefield 2042 engine. The movement and stuff like that is going to be exactly the same, but you’re essentially playing on a remastered map with different weapons and vehicles from past Battlefield titles.”

Classic Maps On The Way

So, players can expect to have the Battlefield 2042 combat experience, but with some classic series maps thrown into the mix. This mode will hold up to 64 players for most maps, but 128 in certain locations and on new-gen consoles in others.

As disclosed by Henderson, there will be no inclusion of the ‘plus’ system on this mode – this is the ability to change your loadout on the go.

“The Battlefield Hub is going to be the ultimate sandbox experience and is going to be the “fun” game mode. The reason [my source] has described it as a fun game mode is because they say that this isn’t necessarily going to be a competitive experience or a balanced experience. Instead, this is going to be the ultimate sandbox experience when players are just going to be able to have fun — a Battlefield 1 tank vs. a Battlefield 3 tank.”

Pinch Of Salt In Hand

As with every leak or rumour, please have a pinch of salt in hand, as none of the above has been officially confirmed by EA themselves. However, with Henderson’s track record, these leaks may have some validity.

What is known for certain is that Battlefield 2042 will be hitting consoles on October 22nd on PC, PS5/PS4, Xbox One, Xbox series X/S.

Coming Up… and out already

Well, it’s happened before. Once before, scince we started this feature, we forgot about it and ended up posting it halfway through the month. And here we are again. This being November too, there are quite a few games worth mentioning here, in our monthly watch for what’s next.

Already out this month are the likes of Diablo III on the Switch, the packaged version of Hitman 2, developer Overkill’s take on The Walking Dead, the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection for the Switch, and the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Some interesting stuff mixed in there.

There’s plenty more to come too. Although, as important as November and December are for companies bottom lines, the release do start to dry up for the year. Release a game too close to the peak Christmas buying season after all, and you kind of cut your window short.

Again though, there are some biggies to come, and they start with today’s release of the all-new, online Fallout title.

Art of war

War will never be the same. Enter mankind’s greatest conflict as Battlefield goes back to its roots in a never-before-seen portrayal of World War II. Face intense all-out war and witness human drama set against global combat in epic, unexpected locations. This is Battlefield V. The richest and most immersive Battlefield yet.

Fans will probably remember that Dark Horse had produced an art book for Battlefield 1, so this is kind of the second in a series. Kind of. They do share some similarities though.

Aside from the fact that this one is obviously focused on WWII, whereas the BF1 book was all WW1 I mean. Both games share a gritty tone, and similar art style. It should be fun to follow that through the two books, if you happen to acquire both volumes.

Dark Horse is promising some beat stuff with this too. Expect “hundreds of pieces of concept art showcasing the creative process from rough sketch to final on-screen imagery, paired with exclusive commentary from the talented team who put it all together.”

Packed up with 200 pages of art and notes, the hardcover The Art of Battlefield V will be on the stands on October 16th. And yes, that’s just three days before Battlefield V hits consoles and the PC on the 19th. Going to be a good week for fans.

GOG’s sale is running right now, and Steam’s is right around the corner. So what’s left? Origin’ sInfinite Gaming Sale of course! EA’s online gaming storefront is live right now with its Summer Sale, and there are some great deals to be had.

Cops and robbers shooter Battlefield Hardline is just $4.99 USD, as is Battlefield 3. B4 meanwhile, is $7.49, and the likes of Star Wars Battlefront (deluxe edition) is just $24.99. There are plenty of other deals as well, on titles and series’ like Need for Speed, Dragon Age, Sin City (also $4.99) and Dead Space.

Remember too, that Origin isn’t just EA games. There’s stuff from Capcom (Resident Evil titles) and even The Witcher series there too, all on some form of discount. Despite the name though, not everything in the store is on sale, so you’ll have to hunt a bit, though if you do find something, chances are that the price will be pretty nice. EA says the deals can get as low as 75% off the usual price. Not bad at all.

Coming up in short order, DICE will be holding a little town hall presentation, online style, to tell the world what’s what with Battlefield. The first-person shooter franchise hasn’t been seen nor heard from since last year’s Battlefield Hard Line, which was a distinct departure for the series. Instead of being set in a military campaign, it was an elaborate game of cops and robbers, set inside the US.

Thought the game was met with some praise, it wasn’t really ‘Battlefield’ in the strictest sense, and felt like more of a spinoff. It’s as yet unclear just what path the franchise will be taking as we move forward, but you will find out a lot more than you know now on May 6th.

That’s the day, and 1pm pacific time is the hour, as DICE’s Creative Director Lars Gustavsson and Lead Producer Aleksander Grondal will be talking about the series from its beginnings in WWII, up through the present era and into the next incarnation… well, I guess anyway. The press release isn’t super-specific about what new info we can expect to glean from the talk, but it is about the future, so I think it’s safe to assume we’ll see/hear something new.

And this is going to be an interactive conversation too, not just a one-way presentation. Fans will be able to get in on the event and pose questions to the team in attendance, when the floor is opened up to them. So maybe get your queries ready now, if you plan on taking part.

There’s been a lot of talk about some of the big FPS’ returning to the second great war sometime soon, could that be what DICE will be revealing? Or might they br talking about something else? Maybe something in the future, or a revisitation of the modern era of battle?
