Archbishop Richard G. Henning celebrated the Red Mass, an annual tradition for the Catholic Lawyers Guild of the Archdiocese of Boston, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Voyage in Boston’s Seaport District on Sept. 21.
It was Archbishop Henning’s first time celebrating the Red Mass as Archbishop of Boston. The Red Mass, first celebrated by Cardinal William O’Connell for Boston’s Catholic lawyers in 1941, is a tradition that dates back to England during the Middle Ages. The Mass gets its name from the red robes once worn by British judges, and the red vestments worn by clergy during the Solemn Mass of the Holy Spirit.
In his homily at the standing-room-only Mass, Archbishop Henning took the time to eulogize a close friend of his, whose funeral Mass he had recently celebrated back in his former Diocese of Providence — Judge Frank Caprio, the “nicest judge in the world” who died in August at 88. In his later years, Judge Caprio gained an international audience through the television show “Caught in Providence” and viral social media clips showing his compassion and gentleness as a judge.
Archbishop Henning remembered Judge Caprio as the son of poor Italian immigrants who rose from a childhood in a “cold water flat” to become the first college graduate in his family. When he first became a judge, he invited his father, Antonio, to see his first day on the bench. Antonio shocked his son with the criticism that came out of his mouth.
“I don’t know the law, but you’re not paying attention to the people in front of you,” Antonio said. “These are real people. They have real stories, real suffering. You were not kind. You didn’t show compassion for them.”
“He learned to appreciate the person in front of him, listen genuinely to their story and to show compassion,” Archbishop Henning said. “And of course, this overflowed in the rest of his life and all of his public service. He was a noted man for compassion, for generosity, for kindness, and for leading the way in this regard.”
The archbishop said that Judge Caprio had the biggest online following in countries with a much harsher justice system.
“I know that Judge Caprio certainly affected me, and I will always remember his example and the way in which he lived his faith, sort of transparently, without beating people over the head with it,” he said. “He wasn’t evangelizing in the courtroom, but it was his very manner of life and of work that showed to other people that faith and that family that was at his heart.”
He said that Judge Caprio is an example of how, even in the secular role of lawyer, Catholics “still have to be who we are.”
“I’m so grateful to you for being present here, in this place, in this moment, because it is a witness to me as the Archbishop of Boston that there are men and women of good will, men and women who are disciples of the Lord Jesus, who are venturing out beyond the realm of the church and into that secular society,” he said.
He said that such witness to the faith is especially important in a modern society where religion is treated as a hobby rather than a force animating one’s entire life.
“We do find ourselves at a cultural moment, don’t we, where it seems that bitterness and divides, anger and angry words, and now painful and awful violence, rends our society, undermines those foundations of natural law and even the consensus that there should be order, that government has to function in a way that is rational and objective,” he said.
The archbishop said that, like Judge Caprio, the lawyers at the Red Mass should be humble, filled with faith, and always cognizant of where they came from.
“To work in the law is sometimes to encounter the darker sides of the human heart,” he said. “There is a temptation, is there not, to grow cynical. I didn’t ever see that in Judge Caprio. He wanted to know people. He wanted to be with people. And so I hope and pray that by that light of the Holy Spirit, you will recognize one of those truths of our faith, that each person you encounter is in some sense an encounter with the Lord himself, an opportunity to do the Lord’s own work of compassion and healing.”
After Mass, a sea of lawyers, including over 100 law students from colleges and universities across Massachusetts, walked to the nearby Seaport Hotel for the annual Red Mass Brunch.
Attendees each received a prayer card of St. Thomas More, patron saint of lawyers, and they were led in the “Lawyers’ Prayer” on the back of the cards by Judicial Vicar Msgr. Robert Oliver, who serves as the liaison between the archdiocese and the Catholic Lawyers Guild.
Guild President Michael K. Gillis posthumously presented the Honorable Joseph R. Nolan Award to Philip D. Moran. The award is named after the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Associate Justice who served as president of the Catholic Lawyers Guild from 1995 until his death in 2013. It is annually given to “a member of the legal profession who best exemplifies Justice Nolan’s excellence in the law, devotion to the Catholic faith, dedication to family, and unwavering compassion to all.” Moran, who died in May at age 87, co-founded Massachusetts Citizens for Life, was president of the Pro-Life Legal Defense Fund, and served on the board of National Right to Life.
Moran’s niece Beth Downey and granddaughter Alexia Moran received the award on behalf of Moran and his widow Carole, who was unable to attend the brunch in person.
The brunch was keynoted by Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Associate Justice Serge Georges Jr.
Justice Georges’s career took him through some of Boston’s biggest law firms before Gov. Deval Patrick appointed him to the Boston Municipal Court, serving primarily in Dorchester. Gillis called Justice Georges “our Judge Caprio,” recalling the way he would treat defendants, many of them first-time offenders who spoke little English, with empathy and respect.
In his remarks, Justice Georges said that he wanted to primarily address the law students in the room, recalling the life of the English poet John Donne, a Catholic who was persecuted for his faith at a time when it was illegal to be Catholic in England.
“His life, perhaps like some of us here in the room, was marked by this tension between his inner convictions and the demands of the world around him,” Justice Georges said. “But here’s why God is so good, because out of this tension came some of the most profound reflections on what it means to be human and what it means to live in a community with one another.”
He quoted Donne’s famous words: “Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”
“Our humanity is interconnected,” Justice Georges said. “My life is bound up in yours and yours in mine. What happens to one of us, for good or for ill, affects us all. For those of us that are called into the law, whether as judges or clergy who shepherd souls or law students preparing to take up the mantle, this message has profound meaning.”
He said that justice “isn’t this abstract concept,” but recognizing that when one person suffers injustice, all are diminished.
“You’re stepping into a vocation that is both demanding and sacred,” he told the students. “It requires courage, it requires humility, it requires perseverance, but most of all, it requires a steady moral compass. It requires a North Star — the pursuit of justice.”
The students’ pursuit of justice, Justice Georges said, must never waver in the face of adversity, bend to popular opinion, or back down from criticism.
“I want you to understand that you are to let your Catholic faith take that where it wants to go,” he said. “You can’t stop it. You can’t inhibit it. For people of faith, the pursuit of justice is not optional. It flows directly from our recognition of human dignity and our interconnectedness.”
He told the students that “it’s not enough to avoid doing harm,” and that they should be actively doing good whenever they can.
“Every time we tolerate injustice, every time we look away, every time we excuse corruption or inequity or ‘it’s just the way things are,’ we not only diminish mankind, but we diminish ourselves,” he said. “That is our command. That is what your Catholic faith calls you to do.”

The Honorable Serge Georges, Jr.
Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court
Serge Georges, Jr., Associate Justice, was appointed to the Supreme Judicial Court by Governor Charlie Baker on December 16, 2020. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Boston College in 1992 and his law degree from Suffolk University Law School in 1996.
Following law school, Justice Georges began his legal career as a litigation associate at Rackemann, Sawyer & Brewster, P.C. and Todd & Weld, LLP. In 2007 he joined the firm of Barron & Stadfeld, P.C., eventually becoming a partner. He had a diverse practice focused on commercial litigation and criminal defense practice in state and federal courts. Governor Deval Patrick appointed Justice Georges as an Associate Justice of the Boston Municipal Court in 2013.
Justice Georges’ teaching positions include adjunct professorships at Suffolk University Law School (2000 – present) and University of Massachusetts School of Law (2019 to present) where he teaches courses in Evidence, Professional Responsibility and Trial Advocacy and frequently presents educational programs at Judicial Education programs, MCLE and Bar Association programs.

One-hundred-fifty lawyers and law students filled the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Voyage in Boston on Oct. 6 for the Red Mass, the annual social centerpiece of the Catholic Lawyers Guild of the Archdiocese of Boston. The Mass is traditionally celebrated by Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, but since he was in Rome to participate in the Synod on Synodality, Bishop Mark O’Connell, himself a canon lawyer, was the principal celebrant and homilist.
“We are so grateful to the cardinal for all his years of service and celebrating the Red Mass many times over the years,” Catholic Lawyers Guild President Michael Gillis told The Pilot on Oct. 15, “but we greatly enjoy Bishop Mark, who, for many years, was the judicial vicar and served as our conduit with the archdiocese.”
In his homily, Bishop O’Connell described the differences between annulment and civil divorce, and the common misconceptions which confuse the two.
“Civil divorce deals with ending a contract into which the parties entered,” Gillis explained, “and annulment examines the formation of the bond to see if it was joined by God.”
Since the Middle Ages, the Red Mass has been traditionally celebrated at the beginning of each judicial year. The Mass takes its name from the red vestments worn by clergy celebrating the Solemn Mass of the Holy Spirit, and the red robes once worn by judges. The Red Mass was first celebrated in Boston by Cardinal William O’Connell in 1941. The Mass is sponsored by the Catholic Lawyers Guild each year.
After Mass, the lawyers had brunch at the Seaport Hotel. Maura Doyle, clerk of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts, received the Honorable Joseph R. Nolan Award, which goes to “a member of the legal profession who best exemplifies Justice Nolan’s devotion to the faith, excellence in the law, dedication to family, and unwavering compassion for all.”
As clerk, Doyle has sworn in 55,000 lawyers. She begins each day with a morning offering to God to center herself and her work.
“She reminded the more than 70 law students in the audience that they should remember four things,” Gillis said. “Remember from where you came, be peacemakers instead of hired guns, be judged by who you are, not what you make, and finally, lighten up and try not to be too serious.”
The afternoon’s featured speaker was Bill Burke.
“He spoke about the importance of what we as lawyers do on a daily basis and how important it is to remember mercy when dispensing justice,” Gillis said. “To love the sinner, not the sin.”
Gillis said that being in the Catholic Lawyers Guild has made him a better lawyer, as well as a better human being.
“The practice of law, particularly as a trial attorney, is so competitive that one can easily lose focus on the real goal,” he said. “Being faithful makes me a better lawyer. If we start each day like Maura Doyle with a daily offering, and follow the words of Bill Burke to love God, work hard, and take care of one another, we better represent our clients and improve our lives at work and at home.”

Headmaster Emeritus at St. Sebastian’s School
William L. Burke, III, spent his career as an educator, coach and mentor teaching in the Boston Public Schools, Holderness School, and Canterbury School before serving 34 years as Headmaster of St. Sebastian’s School.
He received a B.A. at Middlebury College, where he was a goaltender on the hockey team, and an M.A. with Distinction at Boston College. He served as President of the Headmaster’s Association (now named the Heads and Principals Association), as well as a board member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the Association of Independent Schools in New England, Pope John Paul II Academy (Dorchester) and Trinity Catholic Academy (Brockton) where he currently serves as Board President. He has thrice chaired the Steering Committee of the Independent School League. Mr. Burke is married to Dr. Patricia B. Burke, a psychologist in private practice. The Burkes have been blessed with four sons and seven grandchildren.

Nolan Award to a member of the legal profession who best exemplifies Justice Nolan’s devotion to the faith, excellence in the law, dedication to family, and unwavering compassion for all. The 2023 Nolan Award was presented to Attorney William F. Kennedy, Jr. Bill began his legal career in private practice in 1980. Since 1982 he has been a member of the adjunct faculty of Suffolk University Law School, teaching evidence, ethics, legislation, administrative law, criminal procedure and legal writing. He was the founder and associate director of the Suffolk University Legal Assistance Bureau. Bill is a former member of the Judicial Nominating Committee, and former chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Bar Examiners, the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees, the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Association and the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable. He is also a trustee of the Emmanuel College, the University of Massachusetts Building Authority, Project Bread and Pope John Paul Academy. Bill is also a member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) commission on Higher Education. Bill is also a member of the Boston Red Sox Foundation Advisory Council. He was honored in 2003 by the Children’s Trust Fund at the organization’s 2003 gala for his many years of service. Bill has also been recognized as the “Crusader of the Year” by Holy Cross College and “Father of the Year” by the American Diabetes Association. Bill was selected for Massachusetts Super Lawyers by Boston magazine.
The guest speaker was Commissioner Xavier L. Suarez, Miami-Dade County Commission, District 7. Commissioner Suarez was born in Las Villas, Cuba in 1949 and has lived in Miami since 1975. He attended Villanova University on a Presidential Scholarship where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and graduated summa cum laude in 1971. Subsequently, in 1975, he received joint degrees: a Juris Doctor and a master’s degree in Public Policy, from Harvard Law School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. He published a law review article on congressional immunities and performed a consulting study for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on the issue of performance standards for new sources of pollution.
Suarez served as Mayor of the City of Miami beginning in 1985 and was subsequently reelected in 1987 and 1989. During his tenure, he worked diligently towards the construction of affordable housing, prioritized community neighborhood improvements and received national praise for his effective handling of civil disturbances.
Suarez joined the Miami-Dade County Commission in 2011 and has focused on the issues of affordable housing and job creation by fostering a positive and supportive environment for current and future entrepreneurs and workers in various high-demand trades. Understanding that the children are our future, Commissioner Suarez also has spearheaded a number of innovative youth programs such as the Miami-Dade Youth Pre-Apprenticeship Career and Technical Training program, the Youth Summer Jobs Program, and the Envelopes of Safety afterschool program offering free STEAM activities to District 7 students.
Suarez also is the author of six books. The first, A Unified Theory of God: Mind and Matter, was published in 2005 by AuthorHouse. He is married to Rita Suarez and is the father of four children: Miami Mayor Francis Xavier, Olga Marie, Anna Teresita, and Carolina.

Commissioner Xavier L. Suarez

A genuine “idea man,” Xavier L. Suarez was elected to serve on the Miami-Dade County Commission as District 7 Commissioner on May 24, 2011, representing numerous municipalities including the City of Miami, the Village of Key Biscayne, Coral Gables, South Miami, and Pinecrest.

Due to the cancellation of the 2020 Red Mass brunch during to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Honorable Joseph R. Nolan Award will be presented posthumously to Attorney F. Beirne Lovely, Jr. Proud Marine, Vietnam war hero, stalwart attorney, community leader, advocate for the underprivileged, avid golfer, motivating coach, faithful Catholic, loyal friend, cherished Papa, beloved father, treasured father-in- law, adoring and adored husband–died at his home, surrounded by his family, on June 7, 2020. Even in the face of his sudden cancer diagnosis, Beirne displayed his trademark qualities of grit, fortitude, faith, humility, dignity, and, most of all, enduring love. Beirne leaves behind a widespread network of heartbroken friends, colleagues, fellow veterans, admirers, and family who, if they were lucky, were on the receiving end of his signature selflessness, unending gratitude, and, most certainly, his contagious belly laugh.
The 2022 Honorable Joseph R. Nolan Award was presented to Attorney Erika Bachiochi. Erika is a Catholic feminist, pro-life legal scholar, and fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Erika was a principal author of an amicus brief for Women Affirming Life that was filed in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. She currently serves as the director of The Wollstonecraft Project at the Abigail Adams Institute, where she is a Senior Fellow.
The guest speaker was Andreas E. Widmer. Andreas E. Widmer is director of the Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship at The Catholic University of America. He co-founded The SEVEN Fund, a philanthropic organization promoting enterprise solutions to poverty. He has worked internationally and brought more than 100 leading-edge technology products to market. Andreas is the author of The Pope & The CEO, exploring leadership lessons that Widmer learned serving as a Swiss Guard protecting Pope John Paul II and refined during his career as a successful business executive. His most recent book, The Art of Principled Entrepreneurship: Creating Enduring Value, came out in 2022. He is also a chapter author in multiple other books. Andreas is an advisor to the Zermatt Summit, an annual business leadership event that strives to humanize globalization, an advisor to Transforming Business, a research and development project at the University of Cambridge, UK, and on the board of directors at the New Paradigm Research Fund and Virtual Research Associates.
