Kidney disease is easiest to manage when it’s caught early — which is why BKF runs a school-based prevention programme using a simple urine strip test to flag students who need further follow-up. Since the programme began in November 2016, it has reached 23 schools and screened over 6,200 students across Bangalore, with the goal of covering 10,000 students in the years ahead. It’s early, low-cost intervention at the scale where it matters most.

BKF holds an annual Patients & Caregivers Meet to keep our dialysis patients and their families motivated and connected. Patients take part in painting, singing and open conversations about their experiences, while caregivers are encouraged to join in too. It’s a day built around a simple idea: patients on long-term dialysis deserve moments of joy and community, not just treatment. We also use the occasion to recognise the staff whose everyday work makes our centres feel like a second home.

To mark International Women’s Day, BKF hosted a celebration for our dialysis patients featuring saree draping, nail art, hair styling and heartfelt speeches. Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Bangalore (Parijata, Mahalakshmipuram, Jnanabharathi, HSR Layout, South and South Parade chapters) visited our centre with a singing performance that brought real warmth to the day. The club also contributed towards free dialysis for our patients — a gesture that meant as much as the celebration itself.

BKF’s Kidney Health Awareness Walkathon brings together patients, families and supporters for a morning of movement with a purpose: promoting healthy kidneys for a healthy future. Participants choose between 3K and 5K routes through Jayanagar, and every registration includes a walkathon T-shirt, breakfast, a basic health check-up and a participation certificate. It’s one of our most visible ways of getting the message of kidney health out into the wider community.

Every year on World Kidney Day, BKF pauses to recognise the people who keep our dialysis centres running: our dialysis technicians. At this year’s event, several technicians from hospitals across Bangalore were felicitated for their dedication to patient care. Dr. P. Aravind from Bangalore Hospital joined us to speak on the vital role technicians play in the dialysis process, and how their skill and attentiveness directly affects patient outcomes.
