Shortcuts is a major step forward in automation for iOS. But there are still quite a few people who either don't "get" Shortcuts' appeal or still prefer their Mac for productivity. If Apple is serious about iOS replacing macOS for most people, and I think they are, then they need to keep chipping away at the things that make people pick the Mac today. Apple sent out an email last night that was crushing to a lot of people in the Apple community. They are ending their affiliate program for the App Store. This was a reliable, important revenue source for many creators out there, and this program's demise means that a lot of these people are going to have to reassess how they make a living.

Of course one should diversify their income as much as possible, but this is a big hit to people who do this as a passion, and it's even harder on those who put food on the table with this revenue.

The world will go on and people will figure out ways to make money, but this is a tough day.

113: Arguing With Myself About Apple Financials

Apple will announce their Q3 2018 financials, and I am as mildly interested as always. So instead of talking about the numbers (they're not out yet!) today I'm talking about how those numbers can and can't be used in debates on how good specific products that Apple makes.

The fact Apple makes billions of dollars a quarter on iPhones doesn't mean the iPhone is without fault. At the same time, the fact sales are going up likely indicates Apple is prioritizing the features that customers are looking for, as they convince more people to buy them.

I argue with myself a little in this episode, as it's a hard thing to nail down, especially if you are not a pro.

Sometimes a passion project you do on the side pays off in your regular day-to-day life. I have had this happen a few times in the past couple years and I find it to be incredibly rewarding every time. I was reminded of this phenomenon this week as I had to step slightly outside my product shoes and do some iOS development work at my 9-5 job.

Passion projects give you new skills and you never know when those skills will be useful down the line. If you find something fun, do it now for fun and you might be lucky enough to have someone pay you to do it in the future.

People have a tendency to always be looking for the latest and greatest software to do their work with. They want something new, something shiny. And while tools are important and when possible you should try to use the best tool for the job, this quest to always find something better will not magically make you better at what you do.

Photoshop doesn't make your ideas any better. Ulysses doesn't make your writing magically more profound. OnmiFocus won't make your more productive on its own. But we sometimes tell ourselves this is the case. We think we can get out of a slump by getting a new, cool app to work with. That may lead to a temporary surge, it's only temporary.

Focus on what tools remove friction from your life. That is my main motivator for software and I'm trying to get better at optimizing for that over looking for the new and flashy stuff.

It's always easier to look at an existing situation and suggest something that's better. This is in no small part because ideas (especially if they fit in a tweet) don't have to concern themselves with the trade offs that things do when they're actually implemented in the real world.

This week is a case study in how this impacts the Apple Pencil charging situation, which some have called bad design. I disagree, and I only do so after working out the implications of making other choices. There are complications with ever product decision, and the challenge is in picking the path that makes the best compromises.

HomePod is here and I've been using mine for a couple days now. It's a very good speaker with some challenges when it comes to other aspects. If you literally just want something that sounds good, then this likely will fit the bill for you. But if you want a little more, or something that just keeps up with the other wireless speakers on the market, this has a few challenges that it needs to overcome.
