Origins of International Night

The tradition of hosting “International Nights” or “Multicultural Days” in schools grew significantly out of United Nations Day, a day established in 1947. International schools and public school districts began using UN Day (October 24th) to host cultural fashion shows, food tastings, and flag parades. The success of these events inspired Bethel students to host the celebration of culture.

I-Night Timeline

The Bethel event was founded by the African Student Association in collaboration with the Multicultural Club. The event kicked off with a cultural fashion show, where people walked the stage in traditional attire and the flags of their home countries. 13 countries were highlighted, from places as diverse as Kazakhstan, Ghana, Nicaragua, and Egypt!

Soon after, A.S.A. members: Denice Ansong, Michelle Chidebere, Saige Holden, Imani Stephens, and Maliah Clanton, choreographed and performed their own dance. The dances were an ethnic mix of multiple African regions. 

Soon after, in our Bruin Cafe, regions of Africa, North America/Central America, and Asia were displayed on tri-fold boards, with fun facts, landmarks, and history. Parents, Teachers, and community members walked around the stands, featuring regional snacks and decor. 

Executive principal Dr. Howard states, “ I loved everything about this evening…nothing makes me happier than to see students engaged in other cultures…”

This night set the seed for International Night at Bethel High School for years to come. So, students, today and tomorrow, can learn and enjoy culture from regions across the world. 

If you’ve been paying attention to the calendar, you’d know that Teacher Appreciation Week has recently passed.

Despite this passing, I believe it’s still important for you to know the person behind teaching Bethel High School’s incredible journalists: Ms. Teelia Lowery.

“I’ve always been drawn to storytelling,” Lowery said, an English and Journalism teacher at Bethel High School. “The idea that words have the power to inform, challenge, and change how people see the world.” 

Her background in communications and accomplishments as a published author helped her become the amazing teacher she is today, equipping her to share that knowledge with her students.

Ms. Lowery served in the U.S. Army and worked in communications. After retiring, she wished for a career that would allow her to influence and educate the next generation.

“There’s a multiplier effect in teaching that you don’t find in many other professions — every scholar I pour into goes on to influence dozens, hundreds, maybe thousands of people. That kind of reach is something I take seriously and feel deeply honored by.”

Her classroom is always filled with laughter, and she’s only ever as strict as she needs to be. She knows that all of her students have the potential to be great, and it shows in all she does.

Ms. Lowery shared that the most rewarding part of her job was watching scholars find their voices.

“When a student writes their first strong lead, conducts their first real interview, or sees their byline on a published piece, something shifts in them. They stand a little taller. That moment of confidence is something no rubric can capture, and I get to witness it regularly.”

Ms. Lowery encourages students striving to be in her shoes to “consume everything” and to “get your own experiences outside of the classroom”. She explained that the best journalism teachers she’s admired weren’t just teachers; They were journalists before anything else.

She encourages everyone to never stop learning and to be patient with themselves. Great teaching, like great writing, is a craft you keep refining until the end of your days.

Being part of her class has helped me grow into a better writer and person simply because of the positive vibes she brings to my life and to the lives of all my classmates.

Here at Bethel High School, the yearbook committee contributes to the overall production of the school’s annual yearbook — a process that takes time, creativity, and effort from students and staff alike. One of those students is Mackayla Patterson, a junior at Bethel High School who has made significant contributions to the yearbook, including an original art piece she specifically designed.

Mackayla has had a passion for art since she was nine years old, inspired by her uncle, who was also an artist and created comics. Witnessing his growth as an artist motivated Mackayla to start drawing, and she began by sketching characters from her favorite anime, Inuyasha.

When asked where she sees herself in the next 10 years, Mackayla says she would like to become a graphic designer — creating drawings for friends and family while also helping people build their own anime and game productions.

That goal has encouraged her to join the yearbook committee, where she has been designing artwork for the school’s annual book. She is also helping her friend Lawson, a fellow Bethel student, with the design portion of a video game he hopes to develop.

For aspiring artists who struggle with motivation or don’t know where to start, Mackayla recommends using other people’s artwork as a reference or source of inspiration — just as she did. She also stresses the importance of not undervaluing your own work, because what you create could resonate with others and open doors you never expected.

Des rires, de la musique française et des tentatives spontanées de prononcer les « R » emplissent la salle de classe de Madame Coly presque tous les jours au lycée Bethel.

Madame Coly est le genre d’enseignante capable de mettre à l’aise même les élèves les plus timides lorsqu’il s’agit de s’exprimer à voix haute en langue étrangère. Même lorsqu’un élève écorche complètement une phrase, elle rit avec la classe au lieu de mettre quiconque mal à l’aise. Son énergie insuffle de la vie à la pièce et rend, d’une certaine manière, l’apprentissage du français moins stressant et plus ludique.

L’un des moments les plus cocasses de l’année s’est produit lors d’une activité orale, lorsqu’un élève s’est accidentellement qualifié de « pomme de terre » au lieu de dire qu’il était fatigué. Toute la classe a éclaté de rire, y compris Madame Coly. Au lieu de passer simplement à autre chose, elle a transformé cet incident en une leçon que personne n’a oubliée. Ce genre de moments distingue sa classe des autres, car les élèves y prennent un véritable plaisir à être présents.

« Petit à petit, l’oiseau fait son nid », dit Madame Coly.

Elle explique ensuite : « Ce proverbe français signifie que le succès s’acquiert progressivement grâce à la patience et à des efforts constants. À l’image de l’oiseau qui construit son nid petit à petit, chacun atteint ses objectifs par la persévérance et un travail assidu. »

Sa salle de classe regorge de décorations colorées, de musique et de conversations incessantes. Certains jours, les élèves entrent fatigués et silencieux, puis repartent le sourire aux lèvres après un cours ponctué de plaisanteries et de terribles accents français. Madame Coly ne se contente pas d’enseigner le vocabulaire et la grammaire ; elle crée un environnement où les élèves se sentent libres d’être eux-mêmes, même lorsqu’ils se présentent par erreur comme des légumes.

From Bonjour to Confidence: How Madame Coly Connects With Students

The sound of laughter, French music, and random attempts at rolling “R’s” fills Madame Coly’s classroom almost every day at Bethel High School.

Madame Coly is the kind of teacher who can make even the most awkward students feel comfortable speaking a different language out loud. Even when someone completely messes up a sentence, she laughs with the class instead of making anyone feel embarrassed. Her energy keeps the room alive and somehow makes learning French feel less stressful and more fun.

One of the funniest moments this year happened during a speaking activity when a student accidentally called himself a potato instead of saying he was tired. The whole class burst out laughing, including Madame Coly. Instead of moving on, she turned it into a lesson nobody forgot. Moments like that make her class stand out because students actually enjoy being there.

 “Petit à petit, l’oiseau fait son nid”, dit Madame Coly.

She goes further to explain, “The French proverb conveys that success is achieved gradually through patience and consistent effort. Similar to how a bird constructs its nest incrementally, individuals attain their objectives through perseverance and diligent work.”

Her classroom is full of colorful decorations, music, and constant conversation. Some days, students walk in tired and quiet, then leave smiling after a class full of jokes and terrible French accents. Madame Coly does more than teach vocabulary and grammar. She creates a classroom where students feel comfortable being themselves, even when they accidentally introduce themselves as vegetables.

Effective communication is one of the most important skills a sophomore at Bethel High School can develop, because it impacts nearly every area of daily life — from academics to relationships to future opportunities. At this stage in high school, the decisions made and habits formed begin to carry real weight. The way I communicate can either help me succeed or hold me back, and building strong communication skills now can make a significant difference later in life.

In school, communication helps me understand what I am learning and demonstrates what I know. When I do not understand something, I need to be able to ask clear questions so I can get the help I need. In group work, I have to share ideas, listen to my classmates, and make sure everyone is on the same page. When communication breaks down in a group, the whole team can fall behind. On the other hand, when everyone speaks up and listens actively, the work tends to be stronger, and the process runs much more smoothly.

Communication also shapes how others perceive me. The way I speak to teachers, classmates, and staff leaves a lasting impression. When I am respectful and clear, people are more likely to take me seriously and want to collaborate with me — and teachers are more willing to offer their time and support. Poor communication, however, can damage those same relationships and close doors that might otherwise have been open.

The communication habits I build now will also follow me into the future. As I grow older, I will face more high-stakes situations — job interviews, college applications, and professional environments where articulating ideas clearly and confidently will matter enormously. Employers and admissions officers actively look for people who can express themselves well and work effectively with others. No matter how talented or intelligent a person may be, weak communication skills can cause them to be overlooked for opportunities they deserve.

During the first week of May (May 4-8), we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week to honor educators who have dedicated their lives to teaching and inspiring students, ensuring they will be ready for what the future has in store for them. 

Many Bethel High School teachers have made an impact on their students, including Mr. Fultz, who has been a teacher for four years, two of them at Bethel, and teaches English 11.

Mr. Fultz is very passionate about the English language, which motivates him to guide students towards a successful future. Through his hard work and dedication, he wants students to remember that English is a part of our daily lives and is very hard to escape. 

When asked about the keys to a student’s success and how he fosters that, he said, “Students are responsible for their own success. Success requires hard work, dedication, and motivation. I foster an environment of continuous learning by reminding students that every day is a new opportunity and that our mistakes make us human. We should learn from them and allow those mistakes to lead to personal growth”.

Being a student of Mr. Fultz, I have always appreciated his ability to create a warm, inclusive classroom environment that encourages students to come together, and I wanted to use this opportunity to acknowledge the care and gratitude that he and many teachers at Bethel High School have shown to their students.

The field experience was coordinated with the support of Ms. Beck G, Principal and Senior Publicist at Beck’s Management Public Relations, whose media access enabled the student journalists to operate with full press credentials on the arena floor. Faculty advisors Ms. Coleman, Mr. Rascoe, and Ms. Lowery accompanied the scholars throughout the event, guiding them through the experience of covering a professional sports production from the inside.

Press Passes and a Place on the Floor

Walking into Chartway Arena with official Harlem Globetrotters press credentials hanging from their lanyards, the MAD Academy scholars immediately understood the weight of the assignment. The laminated passes granted them access that the general public does not receive — direct floor access before, during, and after the game, putting them face-to-face with one of the most recognizable touring sports brands in the world.

The 100 Year Tour is itself a historic event — a once-in-a-century milestone celebrating 100 years of the Harlem Globetrotters, an organization that has played more than 26,000 exhibition games across 124 countries and territories since their founding in 1926. For the first time, the tour debuted the team’s new 100 Year jerseys, and the arena atmosphere reflected the significance of the occasion.

Face to Face with “Ace”: A Live Interview with Arysia Porter

The highlight of the evening came when MAD Academy scholars had the rare opportunity to interview Harlem Globetrotters player Arysia “Ace” Porter — #1 on the roster and one of the most recognizable figures in the organization’s historic run of female athletes.

Porter, known throughout the league for her brilliant ball-handling, signature multicolored braids, and on-court joy, joined the Globetrotters in 2023. She is widely regarded as one of the standout voices for women in professional basketball entertainment, and has spoken openly about her mission: “I became a Harlem Globetrotter to travel the world spreading joy and laughter, to play the game that I love, and to inspire, motivate, and encourage people to follow their dreams despite what people say.”

A student journalist from Bethel’s MAD Academy stepped forward confidently, microphone in hand, to conduct the interview directly on the arena floor as the post-game crowd buzzed around them. Photographs from the exchange capture the seriousness and professionalism of the moment: a young reporter holding her recording device toward the player, both standing squarely in conversation on the hardwood. Porter engaged fully — answering questions with energy, making eye contact, and offering what witnesses described as a warm and encouraging exchange with the aspiring journalist.

The scholars also had the chance to meet Porter in a more casual setting, with a handshake and a photo capturing the moment another student greeted the player — a snapshot that embodies exactly what field journalism is meant to produce: real human connection across the story.

A Team Effort Behind the Byline

The Bethel scholars operated as a coordinated press team throughout the night. While some conducted interviews, others captured photography, managed notes, and documented the sideline atmosphere. Advisors Ms. Coleman, Mr. Rascoe, and Ms. Lowery remained present throughout, coaching scholars in real time and modeling the standards of professional media coverage.

The giant Spalding Harlem Globetrotters display basketball — a centerpiece of the arena floor — served as the group’s natural gathering point. Images from the evening show the scholars posed before it in high spirits: striking playful stances, laughing together, and celebrating what was clearly a milestone night. One scholar wore official Globetrotters-branded warm-up pants as a souvenir of the occasion, drawing both smiles and admiration from the group.

The energy in the photographs is unmistakable. These scholars were not bystanders. They were professionals in training — and on this night, they carried themselves accordingly.

The field experience would not have been possible without the professional partnership of Ms. Beck G, Principal and Senior Publicist at Beck’s Management Public Relations. Her coordination on behalf of the scholars ensured that the MAD Academy students were treated not as visitors, but as credentialed media — a distinction that shaped every aspect of their experience from the moment they arrived.

For student journalists learning to navigate the media industry, access like this is rare — and transformative. Ms. Beck G’s investment in young journalists reflects the kind of industry mentorship that turns classroom lessons into lived experience.

What’s Next for MAD Academy Journalism

Following the event, MAD Academy journalists are expected to publish written recaps, produce broadcast-style reports, and develop social media content based on their courtside coverage. The Harlem Globetrotters assignment adds to a growing portfolio of real-world press experiences for the program this year, which has also included a visit to WTKR Channel 3 News in Norfolk and a media immersion at Norfolk State University’s BIZ Talk Experience.

For the scholars of Bethel High School’s MAD Academy, April 26, 2026, was not just a night at a basketball show — it was the night they proved they belong in the press box.

Since Virginia implemented its phone ban, curiosity about our relationship with technology has spiked. Have phones truly taken over our lives, or is that a dramatized observation?

Students at BHS see phones as something holding them back from achieving different objectives.

“My phone takes away my joy and activities. It makes me have a sedentary lifestyle,” said freshman Jiyahna Brown. 

Former BHS student Riley Gruner agrees, “My phone takes away the time that could have been used to be productive.”

Even staff aren’t immune. Mr. Tejada, a history teacher, admits that with just an hour of screen time daily, he still battles the pull of his phone — though he says reducing it has made life better.

When asked whether they would take up screen time as an option, many students felt negative about it.

“No, at least not by choice.” Says Junior Gabriel Newbill.

Mr. Tejada felt differently about the question, feeling as though “Life gets better.”

Though BHS students were aware of the downsides of having phones with them, they were also quick to point out what they value most about having them.

Jiyahna believes communication is important. “I like to feel safe, and without it I feel alone.” Riley adds on to that: “I enjoy having connections with my friends and family.”

As BHS students and staff debate whether phones do more harm than good, one thing is certain: the 2026–27 school year will bring major changes to the rules. Whether it changes minds remains to be seen.

An interview was conducted with Mrs. Ellis, who received the Teacher of the Year award, and she began to share information that could advise teachers in the future, which could later lead young scholars to success. Mr. Oliver, an academy principal who helps select the Teacher of the Year, explains that administrators, teachers, parents, and staff all help decide who has been an exceptional teacher this year. In her fourth year, Mrs. Ellis has been said to demonstrate clear, distinguished verbal communication, strong creativity, and proper initiative. As a Teacher, she has become an inspiring role model for students, helping them succeed. 

Mrs. Ellis agrees with Bethel High School’s mission statement because she sincerely believes it’s a teacher’s mission and responsibility: “To prepare students to be college, career, and life ready.” 

 Mrs. Ellis continues to demonstrate integrity every day throughout her career; her passion is to educate kids and push them to exceed their own limits. It has also been stated that she still talks to some of her graduate students “TODAY.” Her work is more than just informative to youth; it is also informative to adults. Mrs. Ellis is appreciated by many. 

She helps with the metal detectors in the morning and has a connection with the school nurses. Her work doesn’t go unnoticed, and her strong ambition to advocate for her students is evident. Mrs. Ellis states, “Because she teaches life planning, it gives her an opportunity to bring real-world issues to the classroom, and that way they can learn to navigate throughout high school and beyond.” Overall, Mrs. Ellis’s passion, dedication, and influence leave lasting marks and impressions on those she teaches.

Insights From Students 

After gathering meaningful perspectives from students, a collective number of people believe Mrs. Ellis deserves the “Teacher of the Year” award. In students’ interviews based on why Mrs. Ellis is a great teacher; they have evidence to back it up. 

During the discussions, participants expressed that what makes her a great teacher is her ability to encourage them to achieve their goals. She prepares young scholars for the future and challenges them to reflect on their own personal growth. 

Mrs. Ellis empowers us to do our greatest work, not just put in minimum effort. Not only does she make us apply critical thinking to practical experiences, but she also creates a safe space for innovative thinking. It’s stated that she truly cares about her students and their success in the present and future. Mrs. Ellis provides guidance and stability and expands our thinking for future opportunities. 

Through her commitment to student growth and her significant impact on the community, Mrs. Ellis deserves to be named the “Teacher of the Year” and will continue to shape young minds. 

The Impact of Excellence

My classmates and I have truly experienced self-development while being in her class. Most of her students have demonstrated great responsibility and a strong work ethic as a result of her education. Her instruction is informative about future possibilities and teaches us our own values for navigating life. 

Mrs. Ellis is a great addition to our school community, and she has shown a great work ethic, responsibility, and integrity, which is reflected in her students. Her passion for teaching students an effective way of life is not just about scholarly excellence, but also about preparing them for life beyond the learning environment. Without her class, students wouldn’t be able to identify strong self-morals, manage their time effectively, and apply work-based learning in the workforce. 

Overall, Mrs. Ellis is a profound teacher who inspires others and leaves a lasting impact on her young scholars and the school community.

For many student-athletes, that growth begins with Coach Brehon.

“Success doesn’t happen by accident,” said a student-athlete.

Known for his serious mindset and unwavering expectations, Coach Brehon has developed a reputation for building disciplined, focused, and resilient players. After winning the State Championship in 1993, Coach Brehon was assigned to coach the boys’ basketball team. From the first whistle at practice to the final seconds of a game, he demands accountability, consistency, and maximum effort.

His coaching philosophy centers on hard work and mental toughness. During practices, players are expected to maintain full attention and give their best effort at all times. Excuses are not accepted. “No one is going to be perfect,” said Coach Brehon. He goes on to say he takes progression over perfection. He holds every athlete to the same high standard.

“I may bark at you, but I give all of my kids tough love,” Coach Brehon states.

Over time, players say they begin to understand that his strict approach reflects belief rather than criticism. The repetition, correction, and push for improvement are all part of a larger goal: preparation.

Coach Brehon is not just preparing his athletes to win games; he is preparing them to handle pressure, overcome adversity, and compete with confidence.

Tough but Approachable Leadership

What truly distinguishes Coach Brehon, however, is balance.

While his practices are intense and structured, his personality off the court reveals a calmer, approachable side. He knows when to lighten the mood, offer encouragement, or share a laugh with players who may be feeling overwhelmed. This balance between discipline and relatability helps foster a positive team culture.

Athletes describe feeling both challenged and supported; a combination that builds trust within the program.

“He’s not just teaching us basketball; he’s teaching us how to win at life,” said another student-athlete.

Under his leadership, players develop more than athletic skill. They build habits of responsibility, teamwork, and reliability that carry into the classroom and community.

His legacy is not measured solely by wins and losses but by growth. At Bethel High School, Coach Brehon is setting a standard of excellence; one practice, one lesson, and one player at a time.
