In today’s world of specialization, having one location for full maintenance of your travel machine is not all that easy. We all want to have a home for maintaining our car, jeep or truck, but then, what to do when it’s time for auto repair, when the engine is not running properly, who do you turn to? Uniquely, Autoworks1 is both a throwback to the local garage where you gassed up, changed oil and lubed when it was time, and knew that there was a top notch mechanic available; and a laboratory of trained auto maintenance engineers with the latest equipment to check out not only the computer in your car, but listen carefully to the engine with those gifted ears that hear what’s going on.

We also have one of the top auto repair gurus in the person of Kerry Singley who combines a lifelong passion for repairing motors to his experience as a winning race car driver who now provides track support for racing teams. And, at Autoworks1, Kerry is available to check out your own treasure on a regular basis. It’s like having the best of both worlds: traditional caring for your machine, maintaining it on a regular basis, and having a world class repair shop all rolled into one. Autoworks1 is the 21st Century version of the local garage grown up to support a regional family of regular and sophisticated customers. Let’s put it this way: If you love your machine, the guys and gals at Autoworks1 will love it with you and care for it in the manner you want. And all of this at a competitive price. Are you a car owner whose machine is an extension of the “real you” and for whom caring for your auto is not so much auto repair as it is a natural part of keeping yourself healthy and whole, like brushing your teeth? If keeping your machine healthy, whether it be a car, jeep, van or truck, is as natural to you as cleaning your socks regularly, then Autoworks1 may be the place you want. Here, customers are family and everyone knows that their chief mechanic, Kerry Singley, is a best of the best.

Kerry began his interest in fixing motors as a 12 year old when he traded a bicycle for a Honda motorcycle with a blown engine. As he took the engine apart and learned how to put it back together and make it work again, the sound of that engine purring anew became the calling to his new interest in fixing motors. Most likely, this was also influenced by the fact that at that time, he lived close by to a junkyard, and as a young boy enjoyed pulling parts from the junked cars for the owners to sell. By the time he was in high school he was hooked, so he studied auto repair in formal classes and even won a scholarship to Watterson Institute of Technology, a diesel college. Fortunately for all of us, his high school mentor had him check out some diesel repair shops which led to him deciding that auto repair was more important in his life, and he chose to continue working in auto repair. Simply put, “auto repair was more exciting to me”, he says. In fact, he started to work part time legally in the field at the tender age of 13 with special permission from the appropriate authorities.

Today, as the head of Autoworks1, Kerry is building a loyal customer base of “people who have a passion for their cars and treat them like a member of their families.” Way beyond auto repair, the typical Autoworks1 customer is interested in maintaining his or her machine in top shape. Some are professionals who look to Kerry to keep their race cars at the ready.

The Autoworks1 Newsletter will bring to you twice a month, information about maintaining your machine in “always ready to go” shape and regular articles about what Kerry is up to, the shop and what’s happening in the industry.

A shock absorber on your car or truck is a hydraulic system that slows the motion of the springs when turning or cornering. If you didn’t have the shock on each wheel, the car would shake a lot more and yaw on cornering or tighter curves on the highway. What shocks do is steady the car on turns, keeping the center of gravity and the car from swaying, and also reducing the impact of small ruts and abrasions on the road surface. It’s also a safety issue, if you don’t have good shocks, the vehicle could sway when cornering to the point of causing you to go off the road.

Note: Most drivers don’t realize that over time, the gas charge or oil contained in the shock deteriorates and eventually reaches the stage where the shock is no longer viable.

Unfortunately, most people do not know that their shocks are bad unless they experience extreme tire wear such as cupping. Some tire shops may identify feathering or heel-toe wear as cupping. A wheel that is out of balance may also cause cupping or bald spots to form. The cause is mainly underinflated tires.

Note: If the tire has a lot of hills and valleys, you probably have a failed shock absorber, not necessarily just the bad tires. In short, you can’t keep tires on the car, because of the worn shocks.

One of the important things about having good shocks is in an emergency. If something happens on the road and you have to swerve, when the car catches up with the wheels, it tends to tip in the opposite direction of the way the car is turning. Again, good shocks will change the center of gravity and help you to keep control of your vehicle. The taller the vehicle, such as an SUV or truck, the more important it is to have good shocks and struts for safety.

In general, the gas charged shocks are better. When you push against a regular shock, it stays; when you push against a gas charged shock it pushes back to the original position before it stays. That is why we use gas charged shocks on heavier vehicles and race cars. On race cars we usually use nitrogen charged gas shocks that are, of course, more expensive. With these particular gas charged shocks, we can change the pressure, thus changing the characteristics of the handling of the car.

Prices vary greatly with the sophistication of the product. Some cars have only shocks for which the cost can be as low as $40. Some vehicles have struts all around and those assemblies can go for $300 each. Then there are magnetic and air controlled packages that go for as much as a $1000 or more apiece. In Buddy’s case, the replacement cost for his shocks all round was about $3000 with parts and labor. It is important to consider that he had already gone through two sets of tires that cost him $1500 a set, so the maintenance cost would have saved him money in the long run. So he is already into $4500 in new tires and continuing to replace regularly. Ironically, changing the shocks would not only have made his ride safer for him and his family, he would have saved a lot of money with the recommended maintenance of his shocks.

The bottom line is that this is a safety issue. You can’t ignore the fact that at any time you might find yourself having to swerve out of the way of an obstruction on the road and that becomes dangerous when your shocks or struts are worn. Again, since these are both items that wear out slowly, we seldom notice that they are bad. That is why the American Safety Administration has set a 60,000 mile limit on what can be depended upon for the expected safety standard of these items. You simply will not know when your shocks or struts are wearing down to a point where it is becoming dangerous to the complete safe control of your vehicle.

Note: Ironically, when you change the shocks, the new ones are strong in character, so that when you are driving on a new smooth highway, the worn out shocks may have given you a smoother ride. The strength of the new shocks are a little bumpier, at first, while providing much better control of the vehicle and safety for you and your family.

Within a few minutes after leaving the shop with his new shocks and struts, Buddy called me and said, “Kerry, I don’t believe how much easier it is to handle. I should have listened to you and changed these out many miles ago.”

Unless there is a catastrophic failure of a shock, we are not able to “check the shocks” as a regular maintenance activity because general wear and tear does not show that much physically. While it is true that there are some seals where gas or oil can leak slowly, it doesn’t ordinarily cause a drip that you can see clearly. That is why we determine the time to replace these items by mileage rather than visual inspection when on the rack.

I had a friend who had over 200,000 miles on his truck, and I told him, “Buddy, you need to replace the shocks on this vehicle.” I had been attempting to convince him to change the shocks since he passed 100,000 miles on his odometer.

Note: If a shock has been on the car over 60,000 miles, then that is the time when the Automotive Safety Administration recommends changing the shocks and struts. Buddy had been going through tires on his truck, but finally allowed me to change the shocks and struts.
