The Commercial Motorized Skylight Shades, shown in this video, have the appearance of one gigantic shade.  Truthfully there are 4 shades approximately 6 feet in width operating simultaneously by remote control.

The skylights in this building provide a brighter, more open and airy feeling beyond what standard windows can offer. The skylights, however, were also creating some issues in the work environment.   We chose Hunter Douglas, Motorized Skylight honeycomb shade for this project to address the issues.

Excessive Heat In Summer Months and Cold in the Winter

Honeycomb shades, also known as cellular shades, provide a layer of insulation at the window.  This is important because of the immense heat from the sun entering the building through the skylights. In addition, is the fact that up to 50% of a buildings heating and cooling energy can be lost through the windows.  Therefore energy efficient cellular shades were the best choice for these large windows.

Glare on Computer Screens

On sunny days the excessive light made it difficult for employees to see their computer screens.  Therefore to reduce the sun’s glare while still allowing filtered light to enter the space, we chose a light filtering honeycomb shade fabric.  The honeycomb shades with light filtering fabric allows light to enter the space without the harsh glare of the sun.

Out of Reach Window Coverings

Since the skylights were out of reach, the best option for this client was hard wired motorization.  This client provided a DC outlet at the skylight.  The Hunter Douglas skylight shades were able to have power near the installation, avoiding the use of batteries.  If the client opted for battery operated shades, there would be a need to change the batteries every 1 to 3 years.

In a building with lower ceilings the skylight shades could be operated manually.  For 8 to 12-foot ceilings the customer could easily operate their skylight shades using a specially designed pole.

An option with each of our shutter products, the Bi-Fold Track System allows up to six panels to be hinged together. Panels are connected to a top track, which supports the panels and guides their folding movements. By-pass shutters also run on a track with each panel stacking behind the other.  Shutters are made with different materials.  In Florida and other high humid climates will most likely do better with a Vinyl or Polymer Shutter.  Hybrid or Wood Composite shutters usually contain the same woods that are used in lumber, but they are combined with other materials to make them stronger and more durable.  If you are wanting a stain finish, nothing compares to a 100% wood shutter.  Wood Shutters are also lighter and a better choice for large openings.

We love honeycomb shades because of the energy efficiency. The unique design traps air in the “pockets” to help keep your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. There are several ways to operate your honeycombs; such as, with a cord, motorized or cordless.

The video below shows the Hunter Douglas Honeycomb shade with a cordless operation, called LiteRise. The LiteRise system has a handle to easily push up the shade with your hand to raise it or lower it. The shades will stay in any position where you put them without sliding. The cordless operation can work with the traditional shade that only goes up, top-down-bottom-up configuration and shades with side channels.
