260: Stickman Brews Exit Interview (or Beefie)

For nearly a decade, almost as long as we've been doing this podcast, Stickman Brews has been the unequivocal purveyor of the finest beers in Southeastern Pennsylvania. As of October 2023, this, like all good things, has come to an end. In all seriousness, Ethan Buckman – the inimitable proprietor and brewer for Stickman – along with partners Jim Buckman and Kate Sorrento, and many other fine folks who worked to make Stickman the unique endeavor that it was, have joined the ranks of our most loved and appreciated friends in the industry. We sit down this episode with Ethan for his "exit interview" to discuss the factors and decisions that lead to the closing, the state of the beer industry (and food and beverage generally) and where it may be headed, and of course some ruminations on what the future may hold for Ethan. While we are sad to see the end of Stickman Brews, the friendships we made along the way will endure, and we are certain there are great things coming from everyone who was a part of the Stickman team.

We catch up with a few old friends from some of the state's awesome breweries, and meet some new ones as well. This is one fest we've always enjoyed for its laid back feel, top-notch food, and – best of all – being surrounded by all the funducational wonders this incredible museum has to offer.

237: BrewStacheStrong (or Must-Have Mustache)

This episode we chat with Colin Gerner, President and Co-Founder of StacheStrong, a nonprofit that was born from brotherly love after Colin's brother, GJ Gerner, underwent his first brain cancer surgery for Glioblastoma. Sadly, GJ lost his battle with this horrible disease in 2019 at the age of 30. #BrewStacheStrong is a collaboration beer project, open to any breweries that wish to participate, to help raise funds that go to directly to cancer research. Along with Colin, we are joined by StacheStrong Board Member Lou McKercher and Juice Drapeau, Head Brewer at Oskar Blues, where the idea for BrewStacheStrong was first realized. And, finally, returning to the podcast for the first time since episode 28, is Devin Vogel, Head Brewer at ShawneeCraft Brewing. Last year, the local community in the relatively small town of Shawnee on Delaware, raised nearly $10,000 for the effort. A great group of people working for a wonderful cause. He has been responding very well to treatment and maintained his trademark high spirits, but the medical bills are adding up. If you don't know Bart or Hop Hedz, you have definitely seen his work if you've spent any time drinking beer in Pennsylvania or beer from our state. Bart has been a huge presence in PA craft beer for many years, designing beer themed apparel and merchandise as well as providing graphic design and branding for more breweries than you can count, plus planning and facilitating beer events of all kinds. More importantly, he is an amazing human being who has positively affected the lives of countless people, including us at Beer Busters. More detail in this episode, and we will soon be devoting an entire episode to this event, chatting with Tattered Flag, Hop Hedz, and Dean Pierce, a homebrewer and general beer guy who helped put this all together.

218: Hairless Dog Brewing (or Everybody's Got Access to Rocks)

This episode is a Beer Busters first, dedicated entirely to non-alcoholic beer. Joining us is the Co-Founder and CEO of Hairless Dog Brewing, Jeff Hollander. The Minneapolis based production brewery produces exclusively alcohol-free beer. And it's for real. Most "NA" beers are brewed traditionally – alcohol and all – and then have the booze removed, leaving a product that can legally be up to 0.5% ABV. Hairless Dog, however, has developed a process in which alcohol is never introduced at all, it is truly 0% ABV. While this concept may be a bit foreign to us, the demand for non-alcoholic, yet flavorful beers is on the rise. We chat about the many situations this product would be super welcome, whether you're cutting out the booze entirely, want to cut back, or just to slip in on those occasions where you have a drink in your hand all night and your not really counting those sips. Try as we might, though, Jeff would not divulge the process – who can blame him? Also, we played There's Weird in My Beer in Happy Fun Time, and sampled the trio of brews currently available from Hairless Dog.

212: Craft Tastings (or From the Pantry)

Welcome to a slapdash, socially distant installment of our annual Valentine's Day-ish tradition of a beer and food pairing session with Greg Orth, founder of Craft Tastings, LLC. Since we were unable to proceed in our normal fashion – gathered around the pool table in the Beer Busters basement with whiskey, popcorn, surprises, bacon, grilled cheese, or lots of chocolate – this time around we tried a free-for-all quarantine pairing. With various beers from our beer fridges and snacks from our pantries, we mixed and matched through the most DIY and off-the-rails Craft Tastings episode to date. In the midst of the madness, we played a round of There's Weird in My Beer in Happy Fun Time, and talked a lot about snack foods. As Greg likes to say, if you're drinking beer and eating snacks, you can't go wrong.

We also caught up with our friend Mark Brault from Deer Creek Malthouse to chat about our involvement the upcoming Philadelphia Grain and Malt Symposium.

Episode 201: Human Robot Brewery (or Analog Trolling)

February 2020 was a time when Corona was just a beer, social distance meant cancelling your Friday plans to watch Netflix, masks were for surgeons, and Human Robot opened their doors in the former Saint Benjamin location in Philadelphia. Despite the subsequent slow-motion train-wreck apocalypse, the new brewery has managed to thrive with a solid offering of top class beers. We are joined this episode by two of the team behind Human Robot, Ken Correll and Chris Roller. Throughout a night of often random and meandering conversation, we discuss a few relevant topics such as: the history of the brewery, their philosophy and approach to beer, and the analog trolling of Memphis Taproom (one of our favorite spots in Philly, of which Ken is a co-owner). Episode 200: Black Is Beautiful Blowout (or I Learned How Loops Work)

It's hard to believe we've done 200 episodes of Beer Busters. One fateful day way back in the Spring of 2013, Dan and Steph sat down with a slapped together recording set up in Steph's basement and nervously tried to talk about beer in an insightful and entertaining way. Soon Wayne joined and, before we knew it, we were travelling to breweries far and wide (relatively), recording on site at festivals and other events, and constantly being shocked that people not only listened to us, but took our little project seriously. Unfortunately, here at 200 episodes, we are in a socially distant, Zoom call phase. But we're still having a blast and connecting with amazing people. For better or worse, this milestone episode was nothing like the giant live event for our 100th. The world has changed a lot since then, and, honestly, so have we.

It so happened that, in the course of following the Black is Beautiful beer project, we connected with the only distillery (so far) involved in it. McClintock Distilling and Idiom Brewing in Frederick, Maryland joined forces to create both a Black is Beautiful beer and a whiskey distilled from that beer. At the top of the episode, we chat with Braeden, co-founder and distiller at McClintock and Mike Clements, owner and brewer at Idiom, while sampling this unique pair of beverages. For the rest of the episode, the three of us embarked on a marathon tasting of all the various Black is Beautiful beers we've collected over the last few months. We rambled, unfettered from guests to interview (still remains to be seen if that was a good idea), about topics both trivial and consequential. We also revisited one of the first ever iterations of Libation or Fabrication in an impromptu Happy Fun Time Games segment. So, that was fun.

What had been scheduled long in advance as an on-site podcast recording for Pour Man's second anniversary became, in the age of Corona, another socially distant podcast. That didn't stop the fun, though. Sam and Ryan first appeared on Beer Busters when we were at Pour Man's in Ephrata, PA for episode 164, in which we had a pretty raucous evening. They return along with long-time partner, Mike King, to chat about the latest at the brewery, adding canning, expanding their offerings and distribution, doing deliveries, and planning a second anniversary event amidst the pandemic. In Happy Fun Time, Wayne hosted a round of There's Weird in My Beer … and Two Cocktails. At the top of the episode, we sampled another Black is Beautiful beer, this time a Brown Ale collaboration between Tröegs and Harris Family Brewing. In a rare feet of planning and organization, the guys were kind enough to get us a handful of their beers ahead of time so we could actually drink the product made by the people on the show.

Episode 196: Black is Beautiful

This episode we present a series of interviews around the Black is Beautiful Beer Collaboration Project. Over 900 breweries representing every state in the US and over 17 countries around the world have joined the effort to raise awareness for the injustices people of color face daily and raise funds for police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged. We start off the episode with the man who started the project, Marcus Baskerville, Founder and Head Brewer at Weathered Souls Brewing in San Antonio, Texas. Next, we are joined by Timothy White, Jr., one of the founders of the first wholly black owned brewery in Pennsylvania, Harris Family Brewing in Harrisburg. Harris Family has joined in the project with several brew day collaborations with Love City Brewing, Two Locals Brewing, and Tröegs. Finally, we catch up with our old friend, Sam Masotto, owner of Bonn Place Brewing in Bethlehem, PA. Bonn Place brewed their version of the Black is Beautiful beer with another local, minority owned brewery, Country Club Brewing and has committed to donating the proceeds to black-owned small businesses. Part of this project is encouraging breweries to commit to the long term work of promoting equality in their businesses. Though we're not brewing a beer, we are committed to making a concerted effort to do our part to promote diversity and representation in the world of beer.

This time Wayne was unfortunately unable to join - he was away in the distant, magical land of West Philadelphia (where he was neither born nor raised). We moved things around a little bit...Steph delivered some uplifting beer news, and Dan led his own version of Happy Fun Time Games. We all drank various beers, and Kevin told us about his fun new way to infuse more flavors into some already delicious brews.

Welcome to our first podcast from the end of days! We couldn't think of anyone better to help us try to be silly in the current environment than our old pal, Kevin Keller. He's worn many hats in the local beer industry, but is venturing deeper with his new project, Prototype Brewery & Meadery. There was supposed to be a pretty rad event with several local breweries in attendance, but it's been postponed to make sure everyone involved can be as safe as possible. There was no news or Know Your Beers, but we did somehow find a way to play a recycled version of Happy Fun Time Games from 7 years ago. And most importantly, we made each other laugh while supporting some of our favorite breweries, while practicing social distancing.

We sincerely hope everyone out there is safe and healthy, and can't wait to raise a pint with you in person as soon as we're allowed.

Episode 189: Stolen Sun Craft Brewing & Roasting (or You Don't Know Their Cats)

This episode was recorded just before the pandemic roared into full swing, businesses like Stolen Sun were still operating mostly normally – but there was already unease. We brought sanitizer and disinfectant wipes to the recording, but we weren't yet living in full-on quarantine mode. Obviously, the subject of Corona came up, though not immediately, and we tried not to talk about it at length. We did address the uncertainty small businesses were facing – an uncertainty that has, unfortunately, only grown since. If your reading these words while all of this unpleasantness is still happening, please support local businesses like Stolen Sun any way you can. They are adapting, offering curbside pick up and delivery, trying to keep their livelihoods intact and their families, employees, and customers safe. If you're reading this in the future, maybe try to send a tweet back in time and tell us everything will be ok. All that said, this episode is not really a bummer, we promise. We drank and made merry and talked about a host of non-existentially threatening subjects. We played Libation or Fabrication and learned about malt varieties in Know Your Beer. Greg has been experimenting with using whiskey for his specialty pairing events, and we were more than happy to be his guinea pigs. After three years, we finally return to the Delaware Museum of Natural History for one of the most unique beer/wine/food events we've been lucky enough to be a part of. Now in its 13th year, the annual Wine & Dinosaurs festival serves to raise funds for the museum with an evening of wine and beer tasting, hors d'oeuvres, live music and more. Dan and Wayne are left to try to keep it together without Steph (and – more importantly – Rich), but with the help of our good friend and patron, Ron McDonel, things went perfectly. This was once again a great chance to tap into a beer scene that we don't often get to, in the great state of Delaware. And, as expected, The First State does not disappoint with a stellar lineup of amazing beers, from awesome breweries and cool people.

There is still hope, however, that the dream will be realized in some form and we would love to see that happen.

Our friends at Hop Hedz Gear put together an insane music and extreme sports event so intense it could only be contained in an airport hangar at Capital City Airport in New Cumberland, PA. Featuring live performances by some of the nation's top BMX bike stunt riders from BMX Trickstars, and local skateboarding teams, along with food, booze, and an amazing lineup of music acts, this was a party only the Hop Hedz crew could have thrown. Performers included Drew & the Blue, Gallowglas, Anthrophobia, and the nation's #1 Beastie Boys Tribute Band – The Brass Monkeys. In between jamming to the tunes, we got to sit down and catch up with some old friends in the house, and meet some new faces. This event was epic, a hell of a time, and we hope it turns into an annual thing, we will definitely be back.

Every once and a while on the podcast we get to talk about a liquid other than beer. Whether it's cider or kombucha or even soda, it can be a nice change of pace. This time, we got to learn a whole lot about coffee. We set up our brand new mixer (eternal thanks to our patrons) at Stolen Sun Craft Brewing & Roasting Company in Exton, PA. Don't worry, we did drink and chat about a lot of their great beers, but we also discussed the nuances of our second favorite beverage with owner Jon Zangwill and partner Travis Bailey. From traveling the world to select the best beans, to roasting techniques and more, we took a dive into what makes great coffee. We also talked about the brewery, the beer, and the idea of a hybrid coffee shop/tap room. Dan reported on basketball announcer Kevin Harlan calling a fan's beer mishap and Sony trademarking the homebrew from Breaking Bad, Schraderbräu. Wayne hosted a round of Libation or Fabrication (along with some interesting podcast statistics). In this unusual episode, we returned to Root Down Brewing in Phoenixville, PA for a rotating panel of guest from three breweries that share a unique friendship. Root Down owner Mike Hamara returned to the mic along with brewer Steve Bischoff. Founder of Tired Hands in Ardmore, Jean Broillet joined us next, followed by Sean, Dylan and Kevin from East Branch in Downingtown. Over a lineup of brews from each brewery, this eclectic group of friends discussed their relationship, the local beer scene, the state of craft beer, and – of course – a bit about each of their respective establishments. Roughly broken into three segments, this episode stayed a lot closer to the rails than was expected – though we devolve toward the end in traditional Beer Busters fashion. With Ethan Tripp, founder, brewer and blender, we talked about Form's unique position as a "blendery" – the beer is brewed at other local breweries, than aged and blended (and served) at the taproom. We talked about the business' history and growth, including being named one of the 50 best new breweries by Beer Advocate, and learned a ton about Belgian style approaches to beer and brewing, including the rich tradition of the Lambic style. Dan reported on a study by Founders Brewing comparing the characteristics of lager versus ale drinkers, and the Brewers Association end-of-year report on the state of the craft beer industry in 2018. First off, STEPH IS BACK! Our crew is complete once again as we hit up the First Annual Pennsylvania Dutch Brewers Fest at the Reading Liederkranz German Club in our hometown. This unique beer fest featured home brews from three area homebrew clubs: Bruclear Homebrew Club, Berks Homebrew Club and Lancaster Brewers – alongside commercial beers from area breweries. There was live music and awesome German food as locals sampled the craft of the regions finest home brewers and professionals alike. We chatted with members of the various clubs, as well as some of the commercial breweries on hand, and more. The weather was just right, not too cold but still felt like autumn was in the air, for this awesome event that we hope to return to in the future.

You knew it was only a matter of time before we came back to Evil Genius to get our podcast on. The impetus for our visit to the fine establishment in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philly this time was to discuss the brewery's commitment to sustainability and use of 100% wind power through Inspire. Once we got that covered, and without Steph to keep us in line, we pretty much just had an awesome hang with Evil Genius owner and longtime friend of Beer Busters, Trevor Hayward. Joining us for a bit in the middle was brewery General Manager Garrett Williams. We drank a bit too much and bounced from random topic to goofy reference to dirty joke. Good times. Also in this episode, a phone interview with Brendan Sindell, CEO of House Beer in Venice Beach, CA. House Beer has "One Beer, Done Right," a premium crafted lager. In Happy Fun Time, Wayne proctored a quiz on the environmental impact of beer – a relatively no-nonsense topic that still managed to turn into a cavalcade of shenanigans. Though Steph had to unfortunately sit out this episode (she'll be back next time – we promise), the four of us dunces tried to stumble our way through a Know Your Beers segment all about hop lingo. Plus, beer. Obvs.

Our podcast took a trip down the shore for Labor Day weekend to stop in at Ship Bottom Brewery in Beach Haven, NJ. Robert Zarko, returning to the podcast after appearing at the AC Beer and Music Fest this year, sat down with Head Brewer Jake Stablein to chat about the trials and triumphs of this (almost) beach front operation. Plus, an interview with one of the next generation of Yuenglings at America's oldest brewery, Jen Yuengling. We discussed Yuengling's newest year-round beer in 17 years, Golden Pilsner, as well as many other exciting facets of an upcoming new chapter for a brand we and our families grew up with. We've rarely, if ever, been this excited about – and impressed with – an up and coming brewery. After hearing what Workhorse has in store, you'll be just as stoked for its imminent opening. In the news, Dan reported on happenings in Constellation Brands, the official number of breweries in the US, and a punny cease and desist from everyone's favorite West Coast burger chain. Our wandering podcast found itself once again at the home of Stickman Brews in Royersford, PA. This time we got both Buckman boys on the mics at the same time along with partner-in-crime Kate Sorrento. As per usual, our conversation was dominated by thoughtful, in-depth, and at times depressing, discussion on the current state and future of beer. We also argued about Wawa versus Sheetz food and made many juvenile jokes. Dan dropped some knowledge with the return of the Brewers Association Top 50 Breweries List. But Canal Street remains an awesome spot and Brewphoria remains a can't-miss beer fest we are so glad to be a part of.

To kick things off we sat down with Trevor and Gordon to chat about the event and its inspiration. At The Lab, the Evil Genius tap room, scavenger hunt teams braved their penultimate task: participating in lighting rounds of Happy Fun Time Games live on the Beer Busters Podcast. After their brief brush with internet fame, the teams participated in a tournament of Ninja, Cowboy, Bear (like Rock, Paper, Scissors but with full-body involvement) to vie to be crowned the winners of the Hunt. Live play-by-play commentary was provided by Dan and Wayne during the tense battle.

This fest features a limited number of high ABV beers from some of Central PA's top breweries and caps off the weeklong celebration of craft beer in the state capitol. The brainchild of the Stouts and Stilettos crew and Sara Bozich, Harrisburg Beer Week has continued to grow in scope and success in its third year. We caught up with several old friends of the show as well as welcoming some new-comers. As usual, delicious brews and awesome people abounded at one of our favorite beer fests of the year.

Every year, guests dust off their rarest, yummiest brews to share and raise money for charity. The event has recently been added to the roster of Harrisburg Beer Week happenings and this year donations and raffle proceeds went to Goats of Anarchy, a charity that rescues and rehabilitates baby goats with special needs. Old friends and new joined us to talk about the event, the benefitting charity and, of course, beer.

Master of the "mouthgasm" Greg Orth joined us again for the fourth year in a row to once again guide us through the world of food an beer pairing. His less-than-silent-partner (this time), Mike Reaser also joined in. Mixing it up this time we embarked on a beer pairing free-for-all with several tasty goodies the guys brought along and a veritable king's ransom in beer. We want to truly and deeply thank all of you, everyone who has been on the show, everyone who has supported us and, especially, to all of our fans who have taken this journey with us. For our first podcast in the First State we set up at the 10th Annual Wine and Dinosaurs Festival at the Delaware Museum of Natural History. The annual festival boasts beer, wine, food, live music and a silent auction with all proceeds benefitting the museum and the incredible work they do in their community. This was definitely one of our favorite venues we've had the privilege of podcasting in. Surrounded by dino skeletons sporting fedoras and leis, we chatted with several people from local breweries, many of which have never been represented on Beer Busters before. We'd like to extend our thanks to the museum staff, festival volunteers and all of our guests and we would definitely come back next year!

Returning once again to the stage at the Abbey Bar at Appalachian Brewing in Harrisburg, we set up shop at the 18th Capital City Invitational Beer Fest to sample the amazing array of local brews and chat with the brewers, owners, reps and others pouring their quaffs. Some old friends returned to the mic and we met some new ones as well. Kicking things off were Artie Tafoya, Director of Operations, and Adam Cole, Head Brewer for Appalachian. Then we ran down the line and enjoyed the plethora of good beer and good people.

Philly Beer Week Evil Genius Scavenger Hunt at Lucha Cartel

Our good friends at Evil Genius invited us to be a part of their Philly Beer Week Old City Scavenger Hunt/Bar Crawl in which participants had to journey from bar to bar (sipping Evil Genius beers along the way) and participate in some activity at each stop. We held a Happy Fun Time Games Extravaganza at the last stop, Lucha Cartel, and the hunters had to step up to the mic and answer trivia questions to complete their beer-laden quest. Several of the Evil Geniuses also sat down to chat and we got to sample the debut 867-5309 IPA. Many questions were asked, prizes were awarded and craft beer celeb Ashley Rouston (aka The Beer Wench) happend to stop by and stepped up to the mic for a bit and talked about her book, The Beer Wench’s Guide to Beer. So that was pretty awesome.

Kick off Philly Beer Week with this episode at Free Will with renowned brewer John Stemler. John won a raffle for a trip to Belgium to brew at Hof ten DormaalFarmhouse brewery in Tildonk. Tragically, the brewery suffered a fire in January. We recorded this episode at a fundraising event at Free Will. Aside from chatting with John about his brewing experience and his trip to Belgium, we spread the love of Philly Beer Week in both the news and Know Your Beers segments, and played a Philly-themed Years of Beers in Happy Fun Time Games. The fest featured big beers from a limited number of local breweries. We managed to corral someone from just about every brewery represented (and a few other old and new friends) to come up on stage, sip some beers and chat. This was an awesome event and a fitting end to an incredible week of beer in Harrisburg, orchestrated by the ladies from Stouts and Stilletos and Sara Bozich. Brewphoria at the Canal Street Pub in Reading, Pennsylvania is a semi-annual beer fest that’s brought some of the best breweries from the region and beyond to our hometown since 2007. At the suggestion of Beer Busters Besties Luke and Trevor of Evil Genius Beer, we were lucky enough to arrange to set up shop and record at this year’s edition of the event. Canal Street is truly a gem of the city of Reading (and the host of the Berks County Homebrew Club meetings) and the perfect venue for this legendary but not-over-crowded beer fest. After sitting down pre-game with our featured guests, the aforementioned Evil Geniuses, our ever diligent photographer/DD/brand ambassador Rich gathered up the representatives from the majority of the 19 breweries pouring there to sit down, share some beers and chat a while.
