What happens when the next generation of young scientists discovers CanopyMeg?
At Peachtree Elementary School, fifth-grade students Malaika and Yeva recently chose Dr. Meg Lowman, better known as CanopyMeg, as the subject of their school’s Wax Museum project.
The students researched Meg’s life and career, from her childhood fascination with trees, animals, and insects to her pioneering work exploring rainforest canopies and helping people around the world understand and protect forests.
Then, they stepped into Meg’s shoes themselves! Malaika and Yeva created displays, dressed as CanopyMeg, and wrote first-person monologues to share her story with their school community.

Their CanopyMeg presentations even caught the attention of a special visitor! Malaika and Yeva had the opportunity to share their projects with Gwinnett County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Calvin Watts, giving them the chance to introduce CanopyMeg and her work to an even wider audience.
One part of Meg’s journey especially resonated with the students: her experience as the only girl in a science club filled with hundreds of boys. Rather than letting that discourage her, Meg continued pursuing what she loved: science.
That determination eventually led to a career exploring some of the world’s most extraordinary forests, pioneering methods for studying the treetops, and creating canopy walkways that give scientists, students, and communities new ways to experience and understand forests. Today, Meg continues her work in forest conservation and education as CEO of TREE Foundation.
Seeing young people discover Meg’s story, explore forest science, and imagine where their own curiosity might lead is a wonderful reminder of why inspiring the next generation matters!
The article reflects on a visit to the Amazon rainforest near Iquitos, Peru, where suspended canopy walkways and aerial bridges provided an immersive experience high within the forest canopy. Meg’s pioneering work studying treetops and advocating for forest conservation has inspired people around the world and helped bring greater awareness to the importance of protecting what she often calls “the eighth continent” — the forest canopy.

“When I was in the Amazon in March with Andreu Quesada to film footage for a special episode of Ecos, we were able to walk along a network of suspension bridges and walkways a couple of hours by boat from Iquitos, thanks to Meg Lowman, also known as “The Arbonaut,” an American botanist who specializes in the canopy, the upper part of the forest. She has spent her life climbing to the highest points and promoting the importance of what she calls “the eighth continent.” To this end, she has designed several aerial tours, at twenty, thirty, forty meters high, through primary forests on various continents, similar to the one I was fortunate enough to experience.
I learned about it from the architect Vicente Guallart, who created one of Barcelona’s most fascinating places: Valldaura Labs, a research space for ecological architecture located on a former estate in Collserola, whose farmhouse he transformed into a residence and postgraduate school. His students, from all over the world (as you can see in this documentary), construct a building each year using timber from the forest and with the help of robots. In 2023, the project was inspired by The Arbonaut, a book by Lowman. It inspired FLORA, an observatory of tree life that blends in with the trees themselves.”

CanopyMeg is delighted to share a recent feature from the French science magazine Les Explorateurs, which spotlighted the exciting world of canopy exploration and the global efforts to study forest biodiversity from above. The article follows Jérémie, an arborist-climber who travels the world, including France, Australia, and Canada, to assist scientists in reaching the highest layers of the forest.
Using ropes, harnesses, and a unique shoe-based climbing system, Jérémie ascends into the canopy, the sunlit upper tier of forests where countless species of insects, birds, and mammals make their home. His expertise allows researchers to safely navigate these heights, install cameras, and collect plant samples that would otherwise be impossible to reach.

Dr. Margaret (Meg) Lowman, Executive Director of the Sarasota-based TREE Foundation, has been awarded the 2023 Tällberg-SNF-Eliasson Global Leadership Prize by the Tällberg Foundation. Lowman was selected for this honor in recognition of her “scientific, educational and advocacy work globally to protect and restore forests.” The Prize is a $50,000 unrestricted grant awarded annually to visionaries from any country and any discipline who have a substantial track record of accomplishment and who are likely to continue to make extraordinary contributions to human welfare.
“Dr. Lowman is making an important contribution to changing the arc of the climate crisis through her science and her advocacy,” stated Alan Stoga, Chairman of the Tällberg Foundation via press release. Lowman received the award during the annual Aula Volta ceremony held at the University of Pavia in Italy on January 26, 2024.
Former Ambassador of Greece to the United States and current senior adviser to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Vassilis Kaskarelis presented the award to Lowman, alongside fellow prize winner Andrew Bastawrous, who was recognized for his work on behalf of the vision-impaired. Speaking of both recipients, Stoga stated, “They are exactly the sort of leaders that we seek to honor and nurture—because they are actually changing the world for the better.”

Known internationally as “Canopy Meg,” Lowman pioneered the science and exploration of the eighth continent — forest canopies. Over 45 years, she has worked to protect mature trees and forests around the globe and support tree canopy research. Through the TREE Foundation, she spearheaded the design and building of many canopy walkways and research stations throughout the US and in countries around the world. In Florida, the Myakka State River Park’s canopy walkway has had a local economic impact of over $10million annually and Canopy Meg has guided others in the fundraising and best practices for building canopy walkways in their communities.
Lowman is committed to educating children and adults across the globe about the urgent need to protect the oxygen-creating and carbon-storing big trees that sustain life on Earth. She was an early designer and user of tools for “arbornauts” — scientists, researchers and citizen scientists who climb trees, using everything from slingshots, ropes, and hot-air balloons, to canopy walkways and construction cranes to enable whole-tree exploration, not just the forest floor.

A fierce advocate for big trees, the lungs of the Earth, and endangered forests, Lowman is adamant that, “We must save our eighth continent if we are to save ourselves.” Over the last decade, she has assisted in the creation of a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve surrounding a Malaysian canopy walkway, established partnerships with Coptic priests in Ethiopia to save the country’s last remaining church forests, published a 2021 memoir, “The Arbornaut,” which chronicles her adventures as a female scientist and her dedication to mentoring girls in science, and launched her passion project “Mission Green,” an initiative of the nonprofit TREE Foundation which she co-founded in 1999.
