A-Basin kicks off 2013-14 ski season; Loveland set to open Thursday

The 2013-14 ski season officially kicked off Sunday with Arapahoe Basin becoming the first ski resort in North America to open to the public, according to Colorado Ski Country USA, and on Monday Loveland Ski Area announced it will open Thursday. “The race to host Opening Day is one of the highlights of the ski season, a title often held by Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin or Loveland [Ski Area],” CSCUSA officials said in a press release. “Both resorts are perched atop the Continental Divide, giving them higher elevations, earlier frosts and colder temperatures. This also allows them to stay open long into the spring, giving Colorado one of the longest ski seasons in the country.” A-Basin also won the race last year, opening on Oct. 17 and followed by Loveland on Oct. 23. Both resorts are ahead of that pace this season. “Our snowmaking crew has done a tremendous job getting the mountain ready for opening day,” said Rob Goodell, Loveland’s director of business operations. “The snow guns are still firing and there is more snow in the forecast, so the first turns of the season are going to be exceptional.”

Vail Town Council to weigh new plan to redevelop Timber Ridge housing project

Plans to redevelop the easternmost portion of the town-owned Timber Ridge affordable housing complex will take a significant step forward Tuesday, Oct. 15 when the Vail Town Council considers approval of a pre-development agreement with a third-party development group.

Since February, the town has been working on a redevelopment plan with representatives from Wright and Company, Inc., and Gorman and Company, Inc., after previous redevelopment attempts were discontinued due to financial considerations. The topic is listed sixth on the Oct. 15 Town Council meeting agenda, which begins at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers with opportunities for public comment.

The current redevelopment proposal includes demolishing 102 existing apartment units located on the easternmost 5.24 acres of the site and replacing them with at least 104 units. The new apartments would be constructed within a mix of three-story buildings surrounded by green space and surface parking. Seventy percent of the units are proposed to be deed restricted which is consistent with the zoning.

Under the proposed agreement, the town would retain ownership of the property using a long-term ground lease to facilitate the redevelopment. The property and improvements would revert to the town after 35 years in an arrangement similar to an agreement currently in place with Middle Creek Villa...

One month after torrential rains and flood-swollen rivers ripped through the heart of Colorado’s drilling infrastructure along the state’s northern Front Range, it’s clear there will be a great deal of discussion about better safeguards to prevent future oil spills when the State Legislature convenes early next year. The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) as of Tuesday was tracking 13 “notable releases” of oil totaling 43,134 gallons in the flood-impact zone (mostly Weld County), and 17 releases of produced water totaling 26,385 gallons. Inspectors for the state’s lead oil and gas drilling regulatory agency had evaluated 1,355 well sites, or approximately 80 percent of the flood-impact zone. The amount of oil released in the flooding, much of which spilled from damaged storage tanks, is equivalent to more than three full, 300-barrel storage tanks, and there are 42 gallons of oil in one barrel. State health officials who have been testing the flood waters announced this week that most of the oil has either dissipated or evaporated.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area opens for the season Sunday, officially kicking off the 2013-14 ski season. Early-season snow, low temperatures and snowmaking upgrades allowed A-Basin to open four days earlier than last season, resort officials reported. The Black Mountain Express lift will start running at 8:30 a.m. to take snow riders to the top of the intermediate High Noon trail at mid-mountain.

“This is a very exciting time for us, and all of Colorado,” A-Basin COO Alan Henceroth said in a press release. “We’ve had tremendous early season snowmaking and natural snow, and we can’t wait to kick off the 2013-14 ski and ride season.”

Copper Mountain started snowmaking on its U.S. Ski Team Speed Center this week to get ready for the U.S. Alpine Ski Team’s annual training. But this season, with the Sochi Winter Olympics only four months away, the stakes are much higher. Copper now has a little more than a month to make snow before the Nature Valley First Tracks Alpine Team Naming event on Nov. 8 -- a free-to-the public pep rally to kick off the ski and snowboard season and introduce gold-medal athletes such as Bode Miller, Ted Ligety, Lindsey Vonn, Julia Mancuso and Mikaela Shiffrin. “The U.S. Ski Team Speed Center at Copper was a huge step forward in supporting ski racing in North America,” said Ligety, an Olympic gold medalist and four-time world champion. “It's cool to now see that support evolve into a fan event that kicks off our road to Sochi and celebrates the start of the ski season.”

With another fall snowstorm headed into Colorado Friday, Copper Mountain is looking to take advantage of colder temperatures and natural snow to open to the public and allow training to begin on Nov. 1. In wake of Colorado floods, debate shaping up over drilling for oil, gas near rivers, streams

A Colorado lawmaker responsible for one of the few successful pieces of oil-and-gas regulatory legislation last session says next year she’ll take up the issue of water contamination and greater setbacks in the wake of this month’s devastating flooding. Routt County Democrat Diane Mitsch Bush told Colorado Public News lawmakers need to consider new rules for keeping drilling away from rivers and streams similar to setback rules for homes and public buildings that went into effect Aug. 1. Current rules prohibit drilling within 300 feet of streams that provides municipal drinking water – extending five miles upstream of the water intake -- but that setback doesn’t apply to bodies of water in general. Rivers across Northeastern Colorado – including the South Platte and St. Vrain – have been inundated with a variety of contaminants from flooding that started Sept. 11, and Mitsch Bush said it’s important not to minimize the potential health impacts of the 1,042 barrels of oil regulators confirmed have spilled in the flood zone.

Both Loveland and Arapahoe Basin ski areas turned on their snow guns over the weekend as a cold front passed through the state on Friday and lowered overnight temperatures. The manmade snow supplements natural snow that fell in two separate storms over the past week, moving both resorts closer to opening day. “The surrounding peaks have been white all week and it is great to see our snowmaking team push the snow line a little further down the mountain,” said Loveland marketing director John Sellers said. “Every flake that falls from the sky or from one of our snow guns gets us that much closer to opening day. We look forward to turning the lifts for all the skiers and snowboarders that have patiently made it through another long summer.”

Vail Resorts, Inc. on Friday reported results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended July 31, 2013 and provided its outlook for the fiscal year ending July 31, 2014. Highlights * Resort Reported EBITDA increased 17.3% to $240.9 million for fiscal 2013, compared to the prior fiscal year. This includes incremental EBITDA of $5.5 million from the acquisitions of Kirkwood and the Urban ski areas, and $7.6 million of EBITDA losses related to the Canyons transaction, including transaction and transition costs on the acquisitions and Canyons transaction (the Canyons transaction, together with the acquisitions, referred to collectively as the "Acquisitions"). Excluding the Acquisitions, Resort Reported EBITDA increased 18.4% to $242.9 million.

Town of Vail's $54.3 million budget set for hearings Oct. 1, 15

Public hearings will take place on Oct. 1 and Oct. 15 as the Vail Town Council reviews the proposed 2014 municipal budget.

First reading of the budget ordinance is listed fifth on the Oct. 1 meeting agenda which begins at 6 p.m. in the Vail Town Council Chambers.

As proposed, the 2014 budget maintains current service levels as well as an investment in three iconic events that would be allocated from General Fund reserves. This includes $400,000 for the Burton US Open snowboarding championships to be held next March 3-8, plus $625,000 for the 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships, including town sponsorship of the Nation’s Team Event at Golden Peak.

The Town Council pledged contributions totaling $1.25 million to be dispersed over five years to support the 2015 championships and an additional $1.5 million over four years for the Nation’s Team Event. In addition, $75,000 has been identified in general reserve funding in anticipation of a bid to host the USA Pro Challenge Time Trial next summer.

Vail-area lawmakers calling for state, federal hearings on oil spills in wake of flooding

Congressman Jared Polis on Friday called for House Resources Committee hearings on oil and gas spills caused by the recent flooding in Colorado. Polis, a Boulder Democrat, represents Vail and part of Eagle County in Congress. He was joined by Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., ranking member of the House Natural Resources Committee, in sending a letter to Resource Committee Chairman Doc Hastings, R-Wash., calling for the hearings. “Not only have my constituents been dealing with damage to their homes, schools, and roads, they are increasingly concerned about the toxic spills that have occurred from the flooding,” Polis said. “Congress must deal with this issue to ensure that natural disasters do not also become public health disasters.”

As of Thursday, the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) has confirmed 890 barrels (37,380 gallons) of oil have spilled in 12 separate “substantial” releases in the flood zone. They added they still don’t know how much oil has spilled from two of those releases.

Officials say they’ve inspected about 70 percent of the flood zone and they’re still tracking 14 other locations with evidence of oil releases, such as a sheen on the water, and 60 locations where there appears to be damage to tanks or other equipment but no obvious indication of a release.

In an ever-warming world, Colorado’s long-running oil-shale experiment may finally be dead

One of the strongest arguments I’ve heard against continuing to pursue commercial oil shale production on Colorado’s Western Slope has always been the expense. In an ever-warming world, billions pumped into an unproven fossil-fuel technology would be better spent perfecting renewable forms of energy such as wind, solar and geothermal, oil-shale opponents have long argued. On the day the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded it’s “extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century,” it makes some degree of sense that the death knell for the state’s long-standing experiment with oil shale may finally have been sounded. In high-alpine, arid places like Colorado, the least amount of water and energy you can consume to produce more energy the better, one would think. But for a century speculators have been intrigued – some would say obsessed – with unlocking the organic kerogen trapped in rocks on the state’s Western Slope and converting it into oil. Back when I had a regular job covering energy and environmental issues for the Colorado Independent, I wrote extensively about the seemingly endless quest to make oil shale production commercially viable. Eagle County officials are seeking input on a draft amendment to its land -use regulations that would allow retail marijuana businesses to operate in certain zone districts within unincorporated Eagle County. On Saturday, Sept. 21 the Eagle Valley Land Trust (EVLT) and ECO Trails partnered with Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek Resort for the fourth annual Vail Resorts Echo Day, facilitated through the Vail Resorts Echo program.

More than 225 Vail and Beaver Creek employees, friends and families planted 250 trees and shrubs, removed over 60 cubic yards of noxious weeds, and performed trail work on over 2,600 feet of new public trails at the Duck Pond Conservation Area between Gypsum and Dotsero on Highway 6.

“The Eagle Valley Land Trust is proud to have Vail Resorts Echo as our partner in the environmental conservation and stewardship, especially on VR Echo Day,” said Kara Heide, executive director for the Land Trust. “The Echo program strongly supports our organizational missions by providing financial assistance to our programs, volunteer hours for our projects and community leadership in environmental protection. The television pictures that are beamed to the world throughout the two weeks of the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail and Beaver Creek will be provided by an internationally recognized industry leader as EUROVISION has been named as the official Host Broadcaster of the 2015 World Championships.

Under the recently-signed agreement with the Vail/Beaver Creek Organizing Committee, Eurovision Production Coordination (EPC), the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) production company, will build an ambitious broadcast installation to provide an international signal in High Definition for all events for all rights holders.

School is back in session and so is Vail Resorts’ and Lindsey Vonn’s “School of Shred” program, offering 5th and 6th grade students the best deal on skiing and snowboarding in Colorado with four free, unrestricted days on the snow at each of its Colorado resorts – Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone – plus four free days at Arapahoe Basin.

In addition first-timers will receive one complimentary beginner ski or snowboard lesson and rental equipment that can be used from Dec. 2-15, 2013 or Jan. 5-31, 2014 as part of “Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month.” Parents can enroll their 5th and 6th graders in the “School of Shred” program now through Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013.

Todd Helton is a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer. But, of course, he may never even be voted into Cooperstown because of an overwhelming East- and West-Coast bias against anything in the world of sports that happens in the middle of the country, especially the Mountain Time Zone. Helton, besides being the best defensive first baseman of his generation (although woefully shortchanged with just three gold gloves), has been a consistently brilliant hitter whose numbers are unfairly discounted because he plays half his games at hitter-friendly Coors Field. Guess what, Yankees Stadium and Wrigley Field rank right up there with Coors Field in terms of offensive stats, but there’s never any discussion about inflated stats for players on those teams. And by the same token, we would then have to add wins for Rockies’ pitchers.

Jorge de la Rosa (currently 16-6) should be considered a 20-game winner this season and solidly in the Cy Young chase, and Ubaldo Jimenez (19-8 in 2010) should have been the runaway winner that year. Never going to happen, because of a glaring double standard.

Even though the chairlifts won’t crank up for another couple of months and it’s still prime time for mountain biking and hiking, recent snowfall on the high mountains around Vail and Beaver Creek is starting to build anticipation for the coming ski season. Storms last week left a dusting of new snow above 13,000 feet, and forecasters are calling for much more significant snowfall this evening (Sunday) on slopes down to 10,000 feet. “Hopefully we'll even see the first dusting of snow on the Gore Range [Sunday] afternoon!” Vail officials wrote on the Vail Mountain Facebook page on Saturday. Opening day at Vail is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22, and opening day at Beaver Creek is set for Wednesday, Nov. 27.

According to meteorologist Joel Gratz of Opensnow.com, a cold front will move into Grand Junction between 2 and 4 p.m. on Sunday and then spread through the rest of the mountains between 5 and 7 p.m.

Vail Resorts chooses Colorado Red Cross for flood-relief contribution

Vail Resorts, which late last week announced an immediate $100,000 contribution to flood-relief efforts, decided on Wednesday to allocate that money to the Colorado Red Cross. The ski company will also donate $1 for every season ski pass sold in Colorado this season. “Given the magnitude of this historic disaster in Colorado and the vast number of people who have been evacuated and need immediate assistance, we have made the decision to [donate] to the Colorado Red Cross to assist with flood relief efforts,” Vail Resorts Chairman and CEO Rob Katz said in a press release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all of our friends, neighbors and employees in the Boulder and broader Colorado communities during this difficult time. There have been so many lives affected by these devastating floods, but Coloradans have tremendous spirit, drive and compassion and together we can rebuild our vibrant communities.”

The anticipation and excitement for the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships ran high Thursday evening, Sept. 12, as 500 people from throughout the Vail Valley gathered at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater for the official kickoff of the 2015 volunteer recruitment process. In addition to enjoying free barbeque and beverage, participants had the opportunity to talk to representatives of the various 2015 operational areas and committees in order to get a better idea of where they might like to volunteer their time prior to and during the Championships. “I was an awards volunteer for the 1989 World Championships,” offered Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation and head of the 2015 Organizing Committee. “It was an incredible experience that changed my life. We are so grateful for everyone’s commitment to helping us welcome the world back to our community in 2015.” Vail resident Susi Brenden earned the honor of being the first person to officially apply as a 2015 volunteer, completing her online application at 12:24 a.m. on September 12, just 24 minutes after the application went live online.

Eagle County Senior Health Expo and 9th Annual Health Fair set for Sept. 20

Eagle County Paramedic Services and Eagle County Healthy Aging will host a Senior Health Expo from 8 to 11 a.m. Sept. 20 at Colorado Mountain College in Edwards. The expo will include a keynote presentation by a panel of three physicians and a physical therapist, as well as over 20 booths providing information on healthy aging tips and senior services. Both agencies are also collaborating to host the 9th annual Senior Health Fair from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 27 at Colorado Mountain College in Edwards. The Senior Health Fair focuses on the health needs of older adults with a variety of screenings such as memory, vision, hearing, balance, strength, dental, vein and blood pressure. All services at both events are free and light refreshments will be provided. “We all know healthcare can be expensive and hard to come by for seniors. This is a great way for seniors to gain access to a variety of providers,” said Cathy Dulac, clinical coordinator with the Eagle County Paramedic Services. “The Senior Health Fair gives our older population the opportunity to focus on their individual health care needs with free screenings and information on aging and wellness. We want to try to catch any health issues in the early stages.
