Bouldering in the High Atlas at Oukaimeden

At Climb Morocco, we’re always searching for new rock and new areas to explore and help develop to promote climbing in Morocco. We’ve recently had our eyes opened to the enormous potential for bouldering in the high atlas in the area of Oukaimeden. There are a number of sectors spread out throughout the area and literally thousands of boulders of all shapes and sizes to be explored and climbed. The rock is largely good quality sandstone with all sorts of really interesting and challenging features that make for some great bouldering. There is a history of some bouldering activity primarily with the CAF who have a nice refuge in the nearby town. We’ve taken a number of trips to the area and have already discovered some great lines with countless more to be explored and huge boulders as far as the eye can see. The area could have potential to be a world-class bouldering destination in a beautiful high altitude setting surrounded by pine forests and breathtaking views. It makes for a great escape in the heat of the summer but can also be great in the winter while climbing in the sun. There are a number of really large features including this free-standing tower that’s just waiting to be climbed. Stay tuned for more updates on bouldering in Oukaimeden as we continue to explore and be a part of developing the area. Friends from Casablanca

This is a quick note to say “Thank you” or better yet, “Merci” to the French Alpine Club in Casablanca (Club Alpin Francais de Casablanca) for all the hard work they have put into developing one of Climb Morocco’s favorite climbing locations, Zuhelika. They have invested countless hours of hard work drilling and developing new routes and a good bit of money too into the gear and hardware needed to do a good job. Thank you. Jeremy and I had the opportunity to guide two excited clients last Monday in Zuhelika. What a fantastic day! Our clients were from Belgium and Germany and were really excited to climb, not only outdoors, but in Morocco! Jeremy and I were excited to show them some of the fun routes Zuhelika has to offer on solid rock in a picturesque village location. Anyway, when we arrived, we noticed a group from the French Alpine Club finishing up a five day trip to Zuhelika in order to development about 10+ new routes in the 5 to 6+ range (French Grade). We had the opportunity to benefit from them immediately as we quickly jumped on a couple of new climbs in the 5 range. I also spent some time meeting the chairman of the French Alpine Club in Casablanca, Jean-Pierre. He was there with a group of experienced route setting friends that had traveled from France in order to continue the development of Zuhelika. They were very friendly and passionate about doing a good job bolting these new lines. We were also thrilled to learn that we both share similar values concerning the climbing locations we enjoy. Jean-Pierre mentioned to me his desire to see Zuhelika remain the beautiful, peaceful, and clean area that it is which reminded me of Climb Morocco’s core values of cultural and environmental sensitivity. We are also committed to caring for not only the location where we climb but also for the people in the nearby villages that have been so hospitable and inviting to us. We are so happy to have finally met some climbers from the club we have heard so much about in Casablanca and are excited to see how we may be able to work together and spread a passion for rock climbing in Morocco in the future. So, French Alpine Club of Casablanca, thank you for your time, money, and hard work that you have invested in the beautiful climbing area of Zuhelika. We are so grateful for your expertise in route development and commitment to keeping this special climbing area so beautiful and clean. Also, thanks for the fun routes you have put up too! Climbing High in the Todra Gorge

What happens in the brain of a rock climber when they see rock? Not just your normal rock. Good rock. High rock. Rock the beckons and even begs to be climbed. I have spent quite a bit of time in the Todra Gorge now, guiding, climbing, relaxing, and I can tell you that the drive in still makes the hairs on my neck stand up. I can feel my forearms beginning to pulsate, a hint of climbing chalk seems to come from no where, my heart starts to beat a little faster. I am certain this is a normal occurrence for each and every climber driving into a canyon, gorge, or even their local crag. They sit forward in the seat of their car, turn the music down as if to pay homage to the rock they are gazing upon. They roll the window down in order to get a clearer look, maybe even a clearer smell. They start envisioning themselves stepping off the ground, working the crux on the climb they have never even touched, belaying high above the deck on pitch 4 or 5. If you have never climbed before, you may think your climber friend is a little crazy, a bit cooky. Is this some strange form of addiction? Is there something in the rock that you must know about? Are they keeping secrets from you? Will they see that car stopped in front of them in time? Well, that’s me every time I drive into the Todra Gorge. The rock towers above me, 300+ meters over my head like giants, frozen in time, casting even larger shadows across my path. I can never bend my neck back far enough or open my eyes wide enough to really take in all the rock! There is one particular route that I had been eyeing for a couple of months during each trip with our clients. There is a four pitch climb located within the Gorge proper called Smouf Ond Web. It slouches next to the bigger and more impressive Pilier du Cochet, but still provides an enjoyable challenge with the same beautiful view of the spring below. The climb offers four fun pitches, 5+, 6a+, 6a, and 4+. The second pitch, which represents the crux pitch, has one interesting reach over a small roof, but the rock is sticky, sometimes sharp, throughout the entire climb, offering lots of friction and endless options for good holds. Jeremy and I racked up and walked across the small spring about 7am. Like most days climbing in Morocco, we had the rock , nay, the Gorge all to ourselves! The morning was quiet and cool as we trusted our feet not to slip off the small traverse we did above the water in order to reach the first belay ledge. The climbing was fantastic and I was constantly reminded that I have the best job in the world! I felt so energized climbing early that morning. How blessed am I to be able to enjoy such a fun sport and passion in such an exotic country as Morocco? Jeremy started the climbing and we swapped leads all the way to the top where we took a minute to take in the view and snap some photos. We were thrilled to have finally climbed the first of many multi-pitch climbs in the Todra Gorge as we scrambled down into a small gully, found our first rappel anchor station and started flaking out our ropes for the long descent. Two rappels later, we were walking across the spring back to the car to make the 6 hour drive back to Marrakech. The three hours of tranquility, working fun climbing moves, building anchors, taking in the view, and being reminded how much I love climbing, really helped prepare me to head back into the business of city life in Marrakech. The experience also raised my stoke for multi-pitch climbing in the Gorge and I look forward to posting new blogs and photos of new climbs in the near future. I know for sure, the next time I am driving into the Todra Gorge, my climbing sixth sense will kick in as strong as ever as the rock pulls the climbing magnet within to it’s heights!

Rock Climbing in the High Atlas

Morocco is an amazing country with beauty everywhere but one of the problems we come across with trying to rock climb year round and guide trips year round is the weather. Most of the year, there are great places to climb in in beautiful weather but the summer can sometimes be very hot in the Todra Gorge and some of the other crags in the general area of Marrakech. Climb Morocco is always on the lookout for new climbing areas to develop, promote, and even take people to in the future.
For some time we had heard that there was some bolted sport climbing to be found close to the ski area up in the mountains at Oukaimeden. A couple of months ago we took some trips to the Oukaimeden area to see what the climbing was like, climb all of the routes and get a feel for the area. During the winter time, climbing is of course not possible due to the high altitude, cold temperatures and snow on the ground. In the summer time however when the temperatures are scorching hot at lower altitudes and around Marrakech, Oukaimeden is significantly cooler. Oukaimeden can be reached in 45mins to and hour from Marrakech and is a nice scenic drive as well as you wind up in the mountains to the Ourika Valley and then climb up to the high country. The views from the Oukaimeden climbing area are vast and you can see all the way down to the flat plain below.
The climbing is on good rock that is made up of a handful of gently sloping and slabby buttresses that jut out from the hillside. This is a great place to learn to climb or for those that are more on the beginner to intermediate on the scale of climbing difficulty. We’re excited to have Oukaimeden as another good option for a place to climb even in the heat of the summer and it makes a great location for a rock climbing day trip or for those that want to experience an Introduction to Rock Climbing. Petzl RocTrip China

Petzl invites their professional, sponsored climbers as well as other climbers from beginners to experts from all over the world to meet in exotic and exciting climbing locations every year. The goal is to highlight and help develop a new area as well as gather climbers from all over the world to climb together. Last year, in 2011, the Petzl RocTrip was held in the remote Guizhou province in Southwest China. Watch the final video below that highlights the RocTrip by Baraka Flims. The RocTrip is a great event and we’d love to see a Petzl RocTrip in Morocco sometime in the future. There are certainly plenty of huge, undeveloped, and exciting areas where the trip could be hosted.

High over Todra

An adventurous group from Spain just spent quite a bit of time in the Todra doing some climbing and establishing new slacklines. To our knowledge it is the first ever recorded highline crossed across the Todra Gorge or even in Morocco in general. Check out the trailer of the soon to be released video of their trip below. Although we at Climb Morocco don’t plan on doing any highlining ourselves anytime soon, this video highlights once again the huge potential that the beautiful Todra Gorge as well as other places in Morocco has for rock climbing and other adventures. This is the best and most versatile camera on the market for capturing adventure sports and Climb Morocco is excited to use it to get some great action footage and video of Rock Climbing in Morocco. This will help us highlight some of the beautiful and exciting places that we take people rock climbing and hopefully inspire many to give climbing in Morocco a shot and make it part of their next holiday in this great country.
