I feel the pain like real personal pain, like when you’ve had a fight with your partner and it breaks your heart and agitates you at the same time. You carry around a shadow, always wanting to know more, to get some further development, and yet wanting it to be over, however it ends, because the tension is too great to bear.
I remember when my heart began to open, and let love in. It was early in my healing journey, at the healing workshops that Martin Brofman ran. It was not love as I knew it I was uncovering, but a different kind of feeling that embraced pain and yet was at the same time infinitely tender and accepting so that the pain was visible but just melted away. I had begun to give this love to myself, or rather give it to that far away child within me who had stormed through all her disappointments and defeats and buried them deep in the past. Once she began to emerge from her cave and sweeten up my life I found she had brought with her a legacy: a heart that was open and sensitive – so sensitive that I could feel that sweet bitter taste of releasing pain as soon as I walked into a workshop where people had come to find healing. It seemed strange to me that I should feel overwhelmed by sadness when one of these workshops started, until I began to perceive a pattern and recognized that this is simply the nature of love.
Love creates everything – catalyses the energy of the unmeasurable and turns it into new objects, arrangements, new realities, new people. And everything that is created must at some point die, so the whole energy of love contains within it acceptance – acceptance of what is and of what must die. We want to hold what we love. We want to feel its physical presence. Grief is losing that. Compassion is loving and letting go. Love in its broadest sense encompasses us. It allows us to communicate and connect to that which is beyond our self. It is beautiful, powerful, but, as soon as we hold it, love is painful too.
So I remembered this feeling when I was thinking about Ukraine, and understanding that mentally or spiritually, we have truly reached a new era, because all over the world millions share this pain. We do not speak Ukrainian, we do not know the country or the people, and yet they are us. They are our brothers and sisters. We want to share our food with them, our clothes, our homes. But most of all we want to protect them and their homes and their food. And we are powerless. That is the pain of the paralysed person who suffers from locked in syndrome: we know, we see, we hear what they are suffering, and we can do nothing to prevent it.
Powerlessness is an acutely modern disease. It is not that others have not experienced it as we do. It is that we have had the illusion of power, because of our communications, our instant knowledge, and yet we turn around in circles and find there is nothing we can do that would make the situation better. This feeling can be dangerous too, when it becomes extreme. Because anger is an expression of powerlessness also. Anger is an attempt to control that which we feel we cannot control. Ask President Putin.
I do not feel anger, but I do recognize another dark friend. I feel guilt. And I know that guilt is heavy on my head. I remember then what I have discovered about guilt. It is that nobody else cares how guilty I feel. My guilt changes nothing. To everyone else my sense of guilt is invisible, trivial, perhaps annoying if they care at all. But to me my guilt is a heavy cloud, glued around me to obscure the view and pleasure of where I am, of what I’m doing. I have learned that once I see my guilt, I can gather it up like an old coat and bury it in an image of the all-consuming earth where everything that is dead can be buried. I do this and I feel physically relieved of a burden that is of no use to me or anyone else. And the space inside my head is clear. Electric circuits connect and confused feelings crystallize so that I see my way clearly again.

My grandfather, ‘digging for victory’ in WWII

What I see in the focused picture is an image of my family during the last European war. When this war began none of them knew how it would change their lives. My mother was an innocent 17 year old. My father was a barely trained soldier just past his 19th birthday. Perhaps my grandfather, who had won a medal for his escape from a German prisoner of war camp in the first World War, had more idea of what was coming, but the reaction of all of them was the same. It was to concentrate on the task in hand, to comply with whatever was asked of them, even though what was asked was often ridiculous and inappropriate to the situation, but to do it anyway. My mother and grandfather, and my father, as an army captain with unlooked for authority over 30 much more experienced men, concentrated on the moment in front of them while the world they knew burned and cruelty and abuse raged. This acceptance of authority was a kind of love, not love of authority, but love for humanity. They ‘dug for victory’, at the front, and at home. Social barriers broke down as they worked together, accepting chaos, lack of control, offering their bare hands and their homes where they could. It’s this kind of ‘digging’: digging deep into the unity of a shared humanity that is the one flicker of brightness in the cruel disaster of war.
So far, we are not much affected in England in a physical way by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, bobbing on the edge of continental Europe as we do. Perhaps it is this situation too that engenders all the intense feelings I have mentioned, because this is how it was for my parents and grandparents before me. We expect that we will be physically affected and currently we accept that. Strong emotion can act like an anaesthetic to physical pain.

Dark times are not the worst times. They are the waiting times. Of course we all want clarity. We want certainty. We like vision and clear purpose. We prefer action…but sometimes we don’t know how to go forward. There is some invisible force it seems that is holding us back.

When we meet a challenge that seems to block us, it is a message. There is language in the block we are experiencing. When we meet such a challenge that sits in our own particular path, we feel confused, foggy, fearful or anxious.

Displacement activity is the favourite way of dealing with blocks. We each develop our own methods that are so effective that often we forget this is displacement activity at all. It feels really important. We might busy ourselves with other people’s tasks, or comfort ourselves with other people’s problems – because it can be a comfort to worry about someone else and perhaps see ourselves reflected as a saviour or an angel in their eyes. But the fog of our own darkness doesn’t go away. We still feel uncertain, disabled in some way.

When we look at the thing that frightens us most, it can feel very dark. But when we take the time to look inside and explore the heart of our fear, it is painful, but it is not so bad, it turns out, as not exploring our fear. And in focusing our attention on it, we find a key to the the way through. Our blocks are inviting us to overcome them and grow.

Break through

Take the time to focus on the thing that you least want to do, or to say, or to see, or to happen. Put it squarely in your mind’s eye and let the picture settle until it turns into the worst that it can be for you. You will feel some reaction in your body. This is your body beginning to speak. Identify where the reaction is and you are already beginning to find the way through.

How your body speaks

If you feel the reaction in your base, your bowels, your bones, your legs, hips or feet, the challenge you are facing threatens your sense of security. Your view of what you need to be secure began at birth, if not before and is strongly influenced by your relationship with your mother. When you see this, can your adult self present another scenario of security which in the place you are now you find acceptable? You are not bound to stay with your esrly impressions of what is ‘safe’. You are here to evolve.

If the physical reaction is in your lower belly, your reaction to the challenge is to do with your childish view of yourself and the way you responded to your environment as a small child. Consider how this action you are contemplating uncovers the vulnerabilities of your childish self. Once you have a view on this, allow your adult self to propose a solution that would be acceptable to the child within you. Cut the child some slack. Do you fear rejection for being yourself?

A reaction in your stomach indicates that your self image is challenged by this action you fear. Something is stirring beneath a firm image of yourself that you have adopted to keep yourself safe. You might feel anger in an attempt to fend off a challenge that you feel undermines you. Consider, would it be possible to have another ‘self identity’? Imagine yourself in another’s shoes. Imagine how it would be to be someone you admire. Now imagine being someone you pity. Imagine being someone you dislike. Imagine being someone you are jealous of. This is an interesting journey. Now come back to being yourself and contemplete the challengs you face again. You will know how to take action.

Most, if not all, fears will dissolve in one of these ways, and as they dissolve they will undo barriers that have been silently blocking your way. Give yourself the courage to go forward. Failure is also possible. But failure is not the end. Just the beginning of the way through.

If you’re new to healing it can seem like a mysterious process. Indeed it works at levels on energy we are not usually conscious of. You may ask yourself what its effect will be and since each individual is different, no one can say for sure how it will affect you. But the effect is always beneficial and reflects what you need in your life at that moment. To help you understand how it works, here are some responses from people who have experienced healing with me:
These responses to healing from some of Anna’s clients help to understand what this mysterious process is like.
This is a woman in her seventies who came with a constriction in her throat that she had been unable to shake off for a couple of years. Of course she had seen all kinds of doctors and specialists but my understanding is that the origin of her throat problem was buried deep in her mental energy and this is where we needed to go to release it. She had one session of healing and this is her response.
Dear Anna, Thank you so much that was an amazing experience unlike anything I have ever known. I feel like a different being and my throat is a thing of the past. You are truly amazing and i feel so privileged to have met you. I am reading and enjoying your book too it is all miraculous and wonderful and also inspirational. What more can I say? ! You lifted a huge weight off me and made me feel positive again, I am truly, truly grateful. I hope we can meet again one day as you are such a fund of interesting knowledge.
How should others respond when you need to heal your body? What relationship can you have with family members and other loved ones? The difficulty with healing is that it is a highly personal and, if you like, selfish process. You can do so much for yourself, but it is difficult for another person to participate or even help, beyond giving you guidance, as in a healer, or allowing you the space to do it, as in a loved one or partner. It’s very difficult for anyone to take this journey with you, however close you are. So you need to take time for yourself when you need to heal. This woman had breast cancer when she came to see me, and this is closely related to one’s experience and expectations of love. Inevitably, one’s closest relationships come under scrutiny. This was her response to healing:
Dear Anna, Some of the observations you came up with last week have been so spot on and helpful in leading me to understand how my disease has come about and how I can move forwards in a better state of balance.
My understanding is that healing is a collaboration between the healer and the person who wishes to be healed. Sometimes this produces results that are really surprising. I was called to one home after a man in his forties developed a brain tumour suddenly. He underwent two operations to remove the tumour, but he was told that the growth was grade 4 cancer cells, the most aggressive kind, and the surgeons had been unable to remove the cancerous tissue, so there was no more that they could do for him. I met him after these operations and gave him healing as I had been asked to do. After the healing he felt better and immediately began to walk better, but I was delighted and, quite honestly, a bit astonished, to hear from him a year later, when he told me that his latest scan showed that he had no more cancer in his brain. These results are what we all wish for, but they do not always happen. We have far more power than we generally think we do, and a healer’s job is to help you to find the way to your own power, but, ultimately control over our birth and death is beyond our conscious minds.
The healing tools I use and have developed over my years of working with people do have an astonishing range and depth. They extend beyond the limits of geographical and physical space, so that they work across thousands of miles with people I have never met. This was the response I had from a young woman who had developed eating difficulties, who I have worked with on several occasions, but I have never met her:
Dear Anna, Listening to our session everything you saw and told me it is so true and gradually makes more and more sense.
Much of my work as a healer involves helping people to open their hearts and minds to the power of the lives they have been given. Of course most of us do not begin to do this until pain forces us to change the direction in which we’ve been travelling. Yet people can readily adapt when this path is explained to them and the power of healing energy helps them to do so. This man was battling a brain tumour and regular seizures when he came to me, as I once did, but he found that he was able to use this approach for himself when it mattered most:
Dear Anna, The last scan that I had to check whether the tumour was changing was fine, so despite our fears our belief in a positive outcome I’m sure contributed to this and they don’t want to see me now until August…..
When I give healing it is not my energy that I am giving, but simply the energy that envelops us all passing through my consciousness. It is a profound privilege to work with every one of those who has come to me for healing over the past decade. Each one has taught me and expanded my understanding of what it means to be a human being on this planet. What I can give is only a reflection of what has been given to me. Like a mirror, I smile back at you. This last comment is from a man who was suffering from prostate cancer.
Dear Anna, The healing was one of the most profound experiences of my life. I didn’t imagine that it would release blocked emotions and energies in such a way. It was truly astonishing how you were able to reveal aspects of myself that even close members of my family would not be aware of. After the healing I felt a tremendous sense of peace and connection to others and the wider world. Strangely, I feel lighter and taller. I will always be grateful to you. I know that I have to stop fighting myself. In that sense I am all ready cured.

I’m in writing mode again. This would be fine. It’s what I do after all. I’m a healer AND a writer. The problem is that once I begin I don’t want to stop – like being interrupted in the middle of a really good movie, it is unsettling.
I use stories to spell things out for me, crystallize the vague rumblings at the back of my mind so that I can see what I know to be true and start to use it as a tool. Because life doesn’t start with certainties. We don’t progress with certainties either. But once we turn our uncertain past into something we can understand, then we have a tool with which to tackle the uncertainties of the present. The more we reflect on what we have experienced and learned, the more of the these tools we accumulate.
Strangely these tools turn out to be effective ways of creating desirable pathways for ourselves, but also for others. But if I’ve shut the door on everyone while I figure things out, how is that going to help?
So I remind myself that spring happens. Each thing you do has a time and place that harmonises with everything else around you. Roll with the season and let it be part of the thing you want to do. When life gets in the way, that’s what it’s meant to do.

Nothing is more important than the present moment, and if that moment is your mother on the phone needing a doctor, an old friend dying, or even doing the grocery shopping, this moment is meant to be.
Enjoy your momentary spring.

Isn’t it funny how just when it seems you have everything in place, all your goals lined up, all the moves you need to achieve them worked out, all jazzed up and ready to give yourself the discipline you need to stick to the plan… wham! something completely out of the blue puts the whole thing on hold! When that happens to me it’s always my body telling me it has other plans. I don’t very often get ill. In fact I can’t remember the last time I had so much as a cold. But when I do get ill, I go down like a falling tree. And there’s nothing I can do until my body has fought its battle with the bacteria, which involves abandoning all my plans and starting again from zero. Zero is really a good place to start. In this quiet time while I wait for my body to stop aching and win its battle, I have reflected on the timing of these occasional disabling periods. My mind, with its planning ahead was having a party right before. “I’m going to do that, I want to do this, and I can do that at the same time and then I will….” Bam! “Oh no you won’t” says Body, “Slow down. Your plan will put everything out of balance. You can only get where you want to get, do what you want to do, if you listen to ME. There’s no other way. That is the balance you need. Listen to me. Stay grounded in the present. And we’ll get there together.” No contest really.

What do you do when you visit a cathedral, an old church, a temple or a mosque? Do you look carefully at the labour and care that has been lavished on its stones, its contours and decoration? Do you whisper quietly as you enter its doors and listen to the powerful atmosphere that resonates within? Do you sit and allow yourself to absorb the vibrations that echo from the shadows and the reverence of ancestors who have created this place and filled its space with their passion?
Most of us are struck by the power of places of worship that reverberates through us. So how much more respect should you pay to the vehicle that got you there, to the one that perceives and receives these impressions and is moved to understanding or to action? To, in other words, your own body.
This weekend at an exhibition in London, I saw these beautiful words, attributed to a Tibetan sage who lived over a thousand years ago:
“I have seen in my wanderings great temples and shrines, but none are as blissful as my own body.”
The Mahasiddha Saraha lived in the 9th Century but the truth of the human experience has not changed in the intervening time. Hard though it is to remember sometimes, our bodies are blessed vehicles of untold sophistication which we have the privilege of inhabiting so we can enjoy our lifetime on this earth.
Perhaps there are improvements you would like to see in the fabric, places where the structure or the decoration has deteriorated, but in attempting repair or improvement you will always approach the building with respect. First you will listen for the vibrations and the ancestral resonances that echo within. Then you will look to see the causes of any damage to the structure and take care to repair the cause, not merely cover over the cracks. You will explore where there are tensions and stresses that have caused damage being sensitive to the channels of communication within. Working sympathetically with the body it will reward you. You will steadily improve what has gone wrong and enjoy the full harmony of its energy. Then truly you will feel that your body is as blissful and as peaceful as the finest temple.

Your life lit us up and your death too. This morning I asked my husband what he would do if he thought he only had 5 years left to live. He said ‘Stay in bed. It would seem longer that way.’ Ha. Each to their own. Your life is yours to spend as you wish. So how are you going to live your life this year, five years left or not? Maybe that staying in bed idea is not so daft after all. At least you need time for reflection, time for your mind to rest, if you are to make your outer life reflect your inner potential. You need to dig in and see what that potential is at your core. My daily medicine is meditation – what my husband once called my ‘medication’. Here’s why.

Meditation has been described as ‘weight training for the mind’ and I suppose that’s a pretty accurate description. But in case that makes it sound as though it’s a chore to you, pause a moment and think about who you are.

You are part animal. You have senses that are tuned to your survival. All your external senses : smell, taste, sight, touch and hearing are there to help you survive in the world: to protect your body, to keep you fed, and to stop you from walking into danger.  They are pretty useful and generally they do the job effectively. But this is not all you are. You have thoughts, feelings, memories, beliefs, imagination, ideas, desires.. None of these senses can be located anywhere exclusively in the body, in the way that our external senses depend on the function of specific organs. For a long time scientists have behaved as though our inner senses are restricted to our human brain, but our language shows that this is not what we experience.  When you feel fear or dread your ‘heart sinks’. When you are angry you ‘stomach twists.’ When you feel love your ‘heart melts’. The elements of our body know and reflect our inner feelings and faithfully speak this language if we listen to it.

So which of these senses do you feel defines your life and your sense of who you are, the outer or the inner? Do you feel more a reflection of what you eat or a reflection of what you feel or desire? Without question, I think , the answer is that your life reflects your inner senses, and yet how much time do you give to examining this inner world?

What you live in the external world is a reflection of your inner energy.  You need to know what your memories are. They have shaped your feelings. You need to know what your feelings are. They have shaped your beliefs. You need to know what your beliefs are. They have shaped the world you experience. You need to know what your desires are. They are shaping the world you are creating. This is what the daily practice of meditation is all about – deliberate communication with your inner world, the activities of your mind, so you can see how things are, and if you don’t like what you find, you can make a decision to change it, and this change will inevitably bring a change in your experience of life.

When a general fights a war, or a builder builds a house, or an artist paints a picture, he or she needs to know before beginning what the lie of the land is and how the materials at hand will behave, otherwise the physical result will not match the initial aim. You are creating your life with your own inner energy. You do to others as much as they do to you. How can you live the life you want if you don’t understand the materials you possess? How can you reach that understanding? You can give yourself time, on a daily basis, to look, explore and understand the activities of your mind. That is what people call meditation.

So how do you do it? There are many guides to meditation, none of which really capture the experience, because the experience is unique for each one of us. You are not trying to reach an externally measurable goal, as ‘weight training’ suggests. You are trying to reach yourself, the mind that you possess, and that is a lot more interesting, and a lot more complicated than you might have thought. I would recommend something simple for anyone who is new to meditation.

First, find a place to do it. Make yourself a space in your home that is your own, somewhere you can be private and relaxed. That may be just a corner of your bedroom. That will be fine so long as you can relax there. Don’t meditate in bed. Meditation is not sleeping! You need to be able to watch where your mind is going and you can’t do that if you’re asleep.

Second, make a daily appointment for yourself: 15 minutes in the morning, when you get up, or after you get home from work, or last thing at night before you go to bed. Whatever time you choose commit to giving yourself that time, even if you have to get up a little earlier than usual, and tell other people in your household that you would like to take this time for yourself every day. Commit yourself to a period of time to try this too, even if you find it very hard going at first. That is part of the process too. So decide before you begin that you will do this for at least three or four weeks, come what may.

Third, start with something simple. At the appointed time each day, sit down, get comfortable and warm, so you’re not distracted by your body, keep your back upright, propped against a chair or a wall if you need to, close your eyes and breathe out. Keep your eyes and mouth closed and focus your attention on the way you breathe in and out. Is there any restriction? Is it easier to breathe out than in. What are you breathing in? What are you letting go when you breathe out? How long can you do this for without thinking about something else? What do you find yourself thinking about? Try to make your breathing rhythmic and even and keep bringing your focus back to the way you are breathing. Notice what comes up while you refocus your mind on the breathing process. What feelings emerge? Where in your body do you feel them? Can you let them go, just by imagining that the feeling is something tangible like a balloon that you can cut loose from your body that has been holding it? Let go of everything that comes up, and note how you feel when you do.

For most people this simple activity is a lot harder than it sounds. At first you can keep a watch or a timer next to you so you can keep yourself to the time you have promised yourself. Soon, I predict you will begin to enjoy the space and the activity you find within yourself and you will easily fill the time you have allocated yourself and more. Breathing, simply in this way, is the way I began to meditate on a daily basis and this simple activity led me eventually to a world of understanding that brought me healing and transformed my life. My husband described my daily meditation as my ‘medication’ ( I was suffering from a brain tumour at the time ) and so it proved to be. The tumour eventually disappeared and I never needed pills or surgery!

Soon you will get to know the furniture of your mind better and detect progress in clearing unwanted thoughts or feelings. You may want to find more and sharper ways of cutting through old baggage, and you can find these in my book ‘Change Your Mind Heal Your Body’ pub. ‘Keen intelligence is two–edged. It may be used constructively or destructively, like a knife, either to cut the boil of ignorance or to decapitate oneself.’  Sri Yukteswar, yogi teacher of Paramahansa Yogananda

My first glimpse of 2016 was the red sun rising over my back garden. Alright it’s true that the clouds have come over and it has rained ever since, but this sunrise is a symbol for me of our new beginning.

I love the energy that comes with the new year. Over Christmas most of us are reminded of the baggage that we carry, whether that’s with our close family, our possessions or our selves: our minds and our bodies. A week after Christmas the new year arrives, and by this time we are ready to shed the loads we have accumulated and put new effort into our search for happiness.

What is happiness? It takes a different form for each of us and that is the beauty of our creativity, but searching for it is the life’s work of each and every one of us. Happiness brings with it peace, creativity, love and beauty as well as health and strength, so that we all want to see each other happy, because we all admire human beings who are like this.

I believe that for me happiness in 2016 takes the form of writing more, exploring more, as well as healing and teaching as I have been doing. I feel blessed that I love what I do, and loving what I do means that it brings me the renewing energy of endless discovery. The only baggage I want to carry is the love of my family, and that package seldom feels like a burden.

So to wish you a bright sunrise on your year of discovery in 2016 I pass on to you the best advice I have heard this year. It comes from Paramahansa Yogananda, the yogi who brought so much love to his teaching in the USA. He said:

“Drink vitality and receive mental nourishment from materially and spiritually progressive minds. Feast unstintingly on the creative thinking within yourself and others. Take long mental walks on the path of self-confidence. Exercise with the instruments of judgement, introspection and initiative.”

To help you with some of those things I have posted the new courses I will be running in 2016 on my Events page, and over the next few weeks I will be adding more guided meditations to the meditations page, so you can rid yourself of excess baggage. I wish you joy in 2016 and may we continue to use our success and happiness to make our world even better.
