The report finds that extremist violence, authoritarian governments, and religious nationalism are placing increasing pressure on Christian communities, while conflict is driving many from their homes in parts of Africa and Asia. The report, “Persecuted and Forgotten? A Report on Christians Oppressed for Their Faith 2024-26,” covers August 2024 to June 2026. It examines countries where religious freedom violations affecting Christians are considered particularly concerning. In many cases, persecution intensified in specific regions rather than nationwide. According to the latest ACN figures, 413 million Christians live in countries where serious violations of religious freedom occur. About 220 million Christians worldwide are directly exposed to persecution. Read More…

The Holy See confirmed the plans in a statement October 26, assuring both that the Pope is “deeply grateful” for the “prayers and affection” at the time of his surgery, and that he “looks forward with great joy and enthusiasm to this journey” to his second homeland. Here is the full text of the Vatican announcement: Two weeks after the surgical procedure undergone by Pope Leo XIV, the Holy See Press Office confirms that the Holy Father’s recovery continues to progress, in accordance with the favorable assessments communicated by his medical team. The Museo Poldi Pezzoli is hosting “Un Tiziano per Milano” until January 25, 2027 — a focused exhibition built around a Madonna with Child and Saint Mary Magdalene, dated to around 1540–1550, on long-term loan from a private collector (see images at the links). The painting has never been exhibited publicly. It left Milan in 1744 when an English Grand Tourist, Sir Thomas Saunders Sebright V, bought it from “a Milanese palace.” Its return is the occasion for a broader inquiry into Titian’s relationship with the city. The show, curated by Enrico Maria Dal Pozzolo and Lavinia Galli, marks the 450th anniversary of the painter’s death. It is a small exhibition — just a handful of works — but a carefully curated one. A close look at the newly surfaced painting reveals two different hands. The Virgin’s face has the refinement Titian is Read More…

While it certainly has been used by nearly every Christian non-profit and every parish priest asking for donations, the phrase is actually a direct quote from the Bible. The quote comes from St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians:  Consider this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:6-7) This image that St. Paul uses should remind us of another passage from the Gospels, when Jesus invited a rich young man to give up everything and follow him: Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to [the] poor, and you Read More…

The humorous exchange took place September 25, while Pope Leo was en route to France.  Despite the White Sox not advancing to the World Series past the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Division Series, “great things” indeed do happen in Chicago. More than 100 years before the United States declared independence from Great Britain, the French Jesuit missionary Fr. Jacques Marquette arrived in the area where Chicago would eventually spring up. On December 4, 1674, he and his companions landed at the mouth of the Chicago River. The Marquette Monument near the Damen Avenue Bridge now stands near the winter camp on the river’s south fork, which was the first recorded European settlement in the area.  In 2018, the Archdiocese of Chicago Read More…

So many people come to mind that we’d hope to give gifts to, especially if one of your love languages is gift-giving. But for many of us, budgets don’t come close to matching up with that long list of loved ones! An NRF consumer survey showed that in the United States alone, shoppers spent an average of $890.49 in 2025 on holiday gifts and seasonal items. That reaches a total in the U.S. on holiday retail sales near or above $1 trillion. While we hear these numbers and find ourselves imagining what good we could do in the world with that kind of money, many of us still open our wallets when the moment arises to buy and give. Sometimes the wallet is truly empty, though, and the gift-giver feels a bit down or Read More…

Nearly 500 years after the English king severed ties with Rome, Pope Leo XIV has accepted an honorary position at St George’s Chapel, with the enthusiastic approval of King Charles III. Even more remarkably, the Pope will have his own specially designated chair at Windsor, while the King has been accorded the same privilege in one of Rome’s great papal basilicas. Given the huge falling-out between the English Crown and the papacy in the 16th century, it’s a pretty spectacular turnaround. However, the exchange is far more than an exercise in ecclesiastical furniture arrangements. Pope Leo has accepted the title of Papal Confrater of the College of St George, while Charles was made Royal Confrater of the Papal Basilica and Abbey of St Paul Outside the Walls during his visit to the Vatican last year. The parliament had approved the bill by 13 votes to 12 in early September. Currently, Liechtenstein’s laws only allow for limited exceptions to its abortion ban, such as serious danger to the mother’s life or health, pregnancy involving a girl under the age of 14, or pregnancy resulting from a sexual crime. The proposed law would have permitted abortion during the first 12 weeks, repealed restrictions on advertising abortion services, and allowed the procedure to be covered by health insurance. Once the law was passed by the parliament, the Hereditary Prince had six months to approve or reject the law. Less than two months passed before he announced that he would not allow it to go forward. The Holy Father considered how we might be able to become people who love as Jesus asks us. ~ Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! In today’s Gospel, the Lord once again leads us to the heart of our faith (cf. Mt 22:34–40).  A teacher of the Law, seeking to test Jesus, asks him, “Which commandment in the law is the greatest?” (v. 36).  The Teacher responds by quoting a passage from Deuteronomy: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind” (v.37; cf. Deut 6:5).  Christ places love at the very center of our relationship with God.  Indeed, it is not enough to know that God exists, that he is the only God, or that he is the Almighty.  The Lord seeks a personal relationship with us: the one true Read More…
