Jagged Alliance: Rage has been nudged back a bit. Fans shouldn’t worry too much though, you’ll still be playing by the end of the year.

EnRaged

Announced not all that long ago, Jagged Alliance: Rage is the first new title in a while for the long-lived series. Now from publisher HandyGames, it’s looking sharp and seems to keep pretty well to the originals. The title sports a new graphical look, and some fresh bells and whistles too. But Rage also carries over that same classic turn-based gameplay that made the original titles so much fun.

  • 2 Player online co-op mode
  • Deep turn-based tactical gameplay mixed with adventure elements
  • Choose a variety of tactics ranging from stealth to brute force
  • Strong character personalities with own skills, desires and personal conflicts
  • Rage skills: Unique character abilities that get more powerful over the course of the battle
  • Powerful Commanders coordinate enemy troops on the battlefields
  • Face terrifying experimental drugs and use them to manipulate your enemies

In all, you’l be able to play as three characters with Ivan Dolvich, Helmut “Grunty” Grunther, and Charlene “Raven” Higgins all available. You can do that in both single and co-op play, in a campaign that’s promised to be an impressive 20 hours long.

Before you get to all that though, the game has to actually hit retail. Originally set to land next month, Jagged Alliance: Rage has indeed been pushed back. Though not by too much. The game will land on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC this December, on the 6th.

Turn-based strategy fans will know the name Jagged Alliance, but it’s been a while since we’ve seen a new entry in the series. Enter Rage.

En-Rage-d

Jagged Alliance is back – With a new take on turn-based tactics, adventure elements and the well-known quirky mercenaries! Set 20 years after the first Jagged Alliance, this spin-off lets you experience a road trip into a jungle hell to test your mind and body to the limits!

This time it’s just you and a few allies versus an entire island ruled by a drug overlord and his crazed army.

A fairly unique turn-based affair, Jagged Alliance went with a much more realistic bent than the genre usually gets. There are no knights or monsters here, just men and women armed to the teeth.

The newest game in the series keeps much of what made its forebears too addictive. It’s got turn-based gameplay, stealth and “brute force” tactics, some actual characters to play with, and a new Rage system.

That’s the biggest alteration it seems, and it’s a decent sized one. “Rage skills” are skills that can build up over the course of missions. It sounds like that could be a game changing effect. Also worth noting is that Jagged Alliance: Rage features a 2 player co-op mode. So you’ll be able to plan joint missions with a pal.

The game is set to arrive for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on September 27th.

RAGE

Lots to like there for shooter fans. I was firmly in the “we don’t really need a sequel to Rage” camp too, but I might not be now. Honestly, it’s kind of hard not to be excited about this game after seeing that trailer. Everything looks good in this one, including the enemies, the weaponry, and the setting. The graphics are looking sharp as well, defying the wasteland setting from the previous game to produce something colorful and beautifully detailed.

I have to add to, that I’m particularly excited by iD Software’s continued involvement. I kind of assumed tYes, Avalanche has a solid rep, but iD just came off of making one of the best FPS’ in years. To have them getting back into Rage

This trailer and the screens that you see below though, are all you’ll be getting till Bethesda’s E3 showcase. That’ll be on June the 10th, at 6:30pm. As to when the game itself will be hitting platforms, that’s much further off. Rage 2 arrives next spring, in 2019.

In the meantime though, have a peek at the first volley of screens. Looks like Rage 2 is going to be bringing one pretty apocalypse with it.

Walmart’s Canadian wing might’ve spoiled what looks to be all the biggest reveals on tap for E3 2018. That includes Gears of War 5, a new Splinter Cell, Borderlands 3, and Rage 2. And now it looks like one of those has been loosely confirmed.

It could be a very big year

First, most of this should still be considered in the realm of rumor. There’s really nothing to substantiate the list that Walmart Canada had on its website after all. Well, almost nothing. First spotted by Twitter user Wario64, the list includes a whole mess of tantalizing games that haven’t really even been hinted at.

Those include the aforementioned, as well as a new (untitled) Assassin’s Creed, Just Cause 4, and more. Lending credence to the “rumor”, some of the games are semi-known quantities. DC LEGO Villains, Borderlands 3, and a new Splinter Cell are all suspected to be on the way already. So seeing them confirmed wouldn’t be all that big of a deal.

As for the rest, there’s no confirmation… well almost none. Bethesda had a very interesting reaction to the Rage 2 mention. They commented by tweeting all the things wrong with the image that Walmart had posted, with the “errors” highlighted in pink. After that, they shared a picture of a rocket with this coming Monday’s date on it (5/14), also highlighted in pink. So could there be a Rage sequel announcement set for this coming Monday? Seems possible.

And if that’s true, what does it mean for the rest of the Walmart list? Could all of these games be hitting this year, or in the near future? Stay tuned, we’ll have any additional info as it breaks.

With Mad Max Month in full swing now, some of us though it might be fun to take a stroll through the archives of what we think are some can’t miss, best of the best, post-apocalyptic games of all time.

It might not be the cheeriest of topics, but the end of civilization has made for some awesome video games and movies over the years. Mad Max is the flavor of the month here on BG this September, but the theme doesn’t begin or end with that specific property, as there’ve been tons of well crafted narratives (and some terrible ones) about the fall of everything that we hold dear.

There seems to be a never-ending interest from the fan community as well, as goes this topic, as the genre really never goes away completely. Whether you’re talking about nuclear armageddon and the aftermath of that, the fallout from a comet strike, or just your old fashioned zombie apocalypse- the end of the world is a setting that doesn’t seem to go out of style.

In recent times too, the subject has become as hot as ever, and made for fodder for some of the best stories in gaming, stuff that really grabs the emotions and doesn’t let go. And with that, I’m talking about (of course) The Last of Us.

Sony and Naughty Dog’s masterpiece for the PS3 and PS4 is one of our favorites here at BG. It’s garnered tons of praise in reviews from both our Features Editor Jake C, who fell in love with it after not actually wanting to like it at all, and our PlayStation Editor Kiri. Kiri actually went one step further, saying about the game:

The plot is intense and so well researched it has you gripped from the get go, though the phenomenal graphics help of course. It is one of the most realistic scenarios I’ve seen as well, and that makes it all the better to play and enjoy over and over.

I’m almost ashamed to admit that I haven’t played TLoU yet, though it’s on my backlog list. I’ll get to it… at some point. I do have to wonder though if that game is almost a bit too much of a downer for me. Don’t get me wrong, I like serious stories (more than comical ones actually), but The Last of Us just seems so bleak.

Somewhat less bleak are the pics made by staff writer Lisa, who had three picks to add to our little list of post-civilization titles here. One of them we all should have seen coming a mile away, while the other two… well, see for yourself.

1) Borderlands: I love this cell-shaded world. The colors and art style are fantastic. I’m not for FPSs, but this series is one of my favorites. Borderlands 2 is the best, but The Presequel is not too far behind. I also love Tales from the Borderlands . The world is rich, the characters unique, and the art style matches the tone and game brilliantly. Definitely my favorite post-apocalyptic games
2) Fallout 3: This was a toughie to place 2nd. It was a close race and Fallout 4 may change this ranking. This game is amazing. Totally playable years after its release, Fallout 3 stands the test of video game evolution. Not to mention the impending release of Fallout 4 THIS YEAR! The story and graphics are amazing, but the real gem is the VATS system. VATS is a literal game changer. I loved playing Fallout 3 and look forward to Fallout 4 this Fall. Honestly, it’s pretty much a tie between Borderlands and Fallout.
Honorable mention) Splatoon: I saw this online just the other day and it keeps making me giggle. It’s an honorable mention, but I love the idea of Nintendo’s squid post apocalyptic world.

I don’t really know if she’s kidding with Splatoon or not, but I like it. As for Borderlands, while it’s not technically an ‘end of the world’ scenario, it is very much in keeping with all the main themes of that trope. It just kind of fits- and it’s like halfway to Mad Max too, so that counts for something as well.

And then there’s Fallout 3. One of the most celebrated titles of last-gen, and best-loved games of all time is very much welcome in this feature, or really any talk about a post-apocalyptic game from any age. I don’t know what more there is to day about the game than what’s been said already (and by Lisa above), so I’ll just leave it at that.

As for my personal picks, well they go little something like this:

4.) Wasteland – Not the prettiest of titles, but this bad boy started the genre off in many ways. It’s also Fallout’s forebear, so without this one…

3.) Doom II: Hell on Earth – A classic of the FPS genre, and while a relatively mindless shooter, was a game that’s very much fitting of the title ‘apocalyptic’.

2.) Rage – Not all that well received, Rage was a favorite of mine as it starred a world that ended in a very realistic way – an astroid strike. It also had a pretty gritty and realistic view of the aftermath… well, aside from the giant mutants.

1.) Fallout 3 – Yep, I said it. I know it’s probably an obvious choice, especially with someone else who contributed to this feature naming it, but it’s a classic. The game defined post-apocalyptic in the gaming realm and is still played by some today, years after its release. In fact, the only thing that’ll probably get people to stop playing it is the upcoming launch of Fallout 4. At least, it probably will.

Bear in mind, that while you’re looking at my picks above, I haven’t played Mad Max as of yet. I’m a pretty big Max fan myself, so I imagine that if the game’s halfway decent (which Jake who’s reviewing has said it is) I’d probably put it on there somewhere.

As for now though, that’s about that. So what did you think of our choices for the beat post-apocalyptic games of all time? Do you have a favorite that spilled by us? Maybe one that doesn’t fit exactly, but kind of does like Borderlands?

Let us know what it is in the comments below, we’d love to hear what it might be!
