Your first ultrasound can make everything feel more “real.” Until this point, you may have been working with a positive pregnancy test and a lot of unanswered questions. Now you have an appointment that can provide new information about your pregnancy and help you determine your next steps.

It makes sense if you’re nervous about the scan or wondering how you’ll react to the results. Knowing what the appointment may involve can make it feel less unfamiliar.

Avenues Clinic offers pregnancy services, including no-cost limited ultrasound scans, to help you learn more about your pregnancy and health. Schedule an appointment today to get started.

Learn What Happens During an Ultrasound

An ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of structures inside your body. It does not use radiation.

Depending on how far along you are, your ultrasound may be abdominal or transvaginal. During an abdominal ultrasound, gel is placed on your abdomen, and a handheld device called a transducer is moved across your skin.

Early in pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound may provide clearer images. For this scan, a transducer is inserted into the vagina.

Don’t hesitate to ask what will happen before the scan begins or speak up if you’re uncomfortable during the exam. It’s natural to feel a little anxious, especially if you’ve never had an ultrasound before. The medical staff is there to answer your questions and help you feel more at ease.

Remember What You’re There to Find Out

It can be easy to focus on what you might see on the screen, but an ultrasound also provides important medical information.

A pregnancy test detects hCG, a pregnancy hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin, but it can’t tell you details like where the pregnancy is located or how far along you are. An ultrasound can help determine this information and whether the pregnancy is developing.

Location is particularly important because an ectopic pregnancy occurs when a pregnancy implants outside the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube. This condition requires immediate medical treatment, so receiving an ultrasound is vital to staying proactive and safeguarding your health.

Come With a Few Questions

Before leaving home, write down anything you want to ask. Pregnancy appointments can bring up nerves, and questions that seemed impossible to forget can disappear once you’re in the exam room.

You can also ask beforehand whether someone is allowed to accompany you. If so, decide whether having your partner, friend, or family member there would make you feel more comfortable.

Remember, there is no script for how you’re supposed to feel during your first ultrasound. You could also feel nervous, surprised, or unsure. If your pregnancy was unexpected, you may experience several emotions at once.

We can help you process these emotions and discuss whatever you are feeling.

Make the Appointment About Getting Information

Your first ultrasound doesn’t need to be something you have perfectly prepared for. Its purpose is to give you more information about your pregnancy and health.

If you are ready to learn more about how we can help, schedule complimentary lab-grade pregnancy testing with Avenues Clinic today. If your test is positive, we may be able to offer a limited ultrasound scan

Come with your questions and give yourself time afterward to absorb what you’ve learned. We’re here to support you.

A positive pregnancy test detects hCG, but the result cannot provide details about the pregnancy itself. An ultrasound can offer additional information that may be relevant to your health and next steps.

Schedule a no-cost, confidential appointment at Avenues Clinic in Frankfort.

What an Ultrasound Actually Shows

An ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images from inside the uterus. During the scan, three key details are evaluated: the pregnancy’s estimated gestational age, the pregnancy’s location, and signs whether the pregnancy is continuing to develop. Together, these findings provide a more complete picture than pregnancy testing alone.

Estimate Gestational Age

Gestational age is initially calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period. That estimate may be less reliable if your cycles are irregular or you are uncertain when your last period began.

Measurements taken during an ultrasound can provide another estimate of how far along the pregnancy is. The abortion pill is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks gestation. Knowing your gestational age can help you understand your options.

Look for Signs of a Continuing Pregnancy

According to the Mayo Clinic, 10% to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. The hormone hCG can remain elevated for days or weeks after, so a positive test alone doesn’t confirm the pregnancy is ongoing.

Identify the Pregnancy’s Location

A pregnancy typically develops inside the uterus. An ectopic pregnancy develops elsewhere, and more than 90% occur in a fallopian tube.

An ultrasound can determine whether a pregnancy is visible in the uterus. If its location cannot be confirmed, further medical evaluation may be needed. An ectopic pregnancy requires separate treatment and cannot be treated with the abortion pill or a procedure intended for a pregnancy inside the uterus. Without treatment, a ruptured ectopic pregnancy can cause life-threatening internal bleeding.

Not every pregnancy announces itself. Some women feel changes right away. Others feel nothing at all, at least not at first. If you’ve had unprotected sex and you’re wondering whether pregnancy is possible despite the absence of obvious symptoms, the answer is yes. Schedule a free, confidential appointment at Avenues Clinic in Frankfort to find out for certain.

Why Symptoms Aren’t a Reliable Indicator

Every pregnancy, like every woman, is different. Hormone levels, cycle regularity, and individual body responses all affect whether early symptoms appear and how noticeable they are. Some women experience a full range of signs in the first weeks. Others have symptoms so mild they’re easy to attribute to something else entirely, stress, a stomach bug, or a change in sleep patterns. Some women have no symptoms at all.

When symptoms are present, they can include:

  • Missed or late period
  • Nausea, with or without vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Tender or swollen breasts
  • Frequent urination
  • Light spotting around the time of an expected period
  • Mood changes

Each of these can also point to other causes. The only way to know whether you’re pregnant is to test.

What a Test and Ultrasound Can Tell You

Pregnancy tests detect hCG, a hormone your body produces after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. For the most accurate result, the Mayo Clinic recommends testing at least one to two days after a missed period, when hCG levels are high enough to be detected reliably.

If the test is positive, a limited ultrasound provides information that a test alone cannot: how far along the pregnancy is, whether it is located inside the uterus, and whether it appears to be progressing. That information matters for any decision you make going forward.

Get Answers at Avenues Clinic

Avenues Clinic offers free, confidential pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds at no cost. There’s no charge, no insurance required, and no pressure. The team is there to give you accurate information so you can make a confident, informed decision about your next step.

When you suspect you might be pregnant, waiting for an answer can feel unbearable. Testing too soon, though, can produce a result that doesn’t reflect what’s actually happening in your body. Schedule a free, confidential appointment at Avenues Clinic in Frankfort to get an accurate result from a lab-quality test.

How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests detect hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a hormone your body produces after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. Implantation typically happens six to ten days after conception, and hCG levels rise steadily from there. Testing before those levels have built up enough often returns a false negative, even if you are pregnant.

When to Test

For women with regular cycles, the Mayo Clinic recommends waiting at least one to two days after a missed period. By that point, hCG has typically risen enough to produce a reliable result. Testing a day or two earlier increases the chance of a false negative, which can mean repeating the process.

A few other things that affect accuracy:

  • Irregular cycles. If you’re unsure when your period was due, the FDA recommends waiting one to two weeks after you think you may have conceived before testing.
  • Time of day. Morning urine is the most concentrated. Testing first thing tends to give the clearest result.
  • Negative results. A negative test before your missed period isn’t definitive. If your period doesn’t arrive, test again in a few days.

Avenues Clinic provides no-cost, confidential pregnancy testing using lab-quality urine tests, with results available at your appointment. If the test is positive, a free limited ultrasound is available to confirm gestational age, pregnancy location, and viability.

Early pregnancy can look and feel different for each woman. Some notice changes right away, while others don’t experience symptoms for several weeks. If you think you might be pregnant, understanding the most common early signs can help you decide whether to take a pregnancy test or seek further confirmation.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, Avenues offers free lab-grade pregnancy testing and support in a confidential setting. Reach out to schedule an appointment.

Below are some of the symptoms many women experience in the first few weeks of pregnancy.

Missed Period

A missed period is often the first noticeable sign of pregnancy. However, stress, hormonal changes, and certain health conditions can also affect your cycle. If your period is late and you are sexually active, taking a pregnancy test is a helpful first step.

Fatigue

Unusual tiredness is one of the earliest pregnancy symptoms. Rising progesterone levels can make you feel more exhausted than usual, even with adequate rest.

Nausea or Morning Sickness

Nausea, sometimes with vomiting, can begin as early as weeks four to five. Despite the name, morning sickness can occur at any time of day. Not everyone experiences it, but it is a common early sign of pregnancy.

Breast Tenderness

Hormonal changes can cause breasts to feel swollen, sore, or more sensitive than usual. Some women also notice darkening of the areolas or changes in breast fullness.

Frequent Urination

Needing to use the restroom more often is another common early symptom. Hormonal shifts and increased blood flow can affect kidney function, leading to more frequent urination.

Food Aversions or Cravings

Some women notice changes in appetite early in pregnancy. Foods that once seemed appealing may suddenly feel unappetizing, while new cravings may develop. These changes are linked to hormonal fluctuations.

Mood Changes

Hormonal changes can also affect emotions, leading to irritability, sensitivity, or mood swings. These shifts are common but can feel unexpected.

Light Spotting or Cramping

Some women experience light spotting or mild cramping around implantation. This is typically lighter than a menstrual period. However, any bleeding during a possible pregnancy should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Need Clarity? We’re Here to Help

If you’re experiencing early pregnancy symptoms and aren’t sure what they mean, Avenues offers free, confidential lab-grade pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds.

Schedule your appointment today to get the care you deserve.

Is your period late, and you’re wondering if you’re pregnant? How do you know where to begin? You could take a home pregnancy test, but can you count on getting accurate results?

When you take a home test, experts recommend following the instructions closely and repeating the test if needed. Early pregnancy symptoms include nausea, breast tenderness, and fatigue, but that doesn’t necessarily indicate pregnancy.

It’s time to schedule an appointment at Avenues Clinic for your first pregnancy test or a retest. We’ll take excellent care of you and get you the facts you need.

What’s the First Step?

After your initial intake appointment, our medical staff will administer complimentary professional pregnancy testing. Our pregnancy tests are lab-quality urine tests with 99% accuracy. They detect the level of the hCG pregnancy hormone in a woman’s urine.

By having our medical staff administer the testing, you can be confident you’re getting accurate results. You won’t have to guess if you’ve taken it too early or if the results are correct.

What’s Next?

A late period and a positive pregnancy test may not be enough information to determine if you are actually pregnant. If you receive a positive pregnancy test at Avenues Clinic, we’ll schedule you for a complimentary limited ultrasound

Why Is an Ultrasound Important?

According to the Mayo Clinic, miscarriages are more common than people realize. Research suggests that 10 to 20% of known pregnancies end in a miscarriage, and the number may be higher, as some women miscarry before they even realize they’re pregnant.

Because it takes a woman’s body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, you may still get a positive pregnancy test days or weeks following a miscarriage. An ultrasound detects whether your pregnancy is developing or if you’ve had a miscarriage.

In addition, some pregnancies form outside the uterus. These pregnancies are known as “ectopic.” Only the uterus can support a developing pregnancy. If it is located anywhere else, it may be life-threatening.

An ultrasound also determines how far along you are in your pregnancy. You’ll know the exact number of weeks and days, which determines your options moving forward.

We’ll Review Your Situation and Your Options

Finally, once we’ve verified that you are indeed pregnant, we can discuss your situation and review all your available options. Your physical and emotional health are important to us.

We want you to have as much information as possible so you can confidently determine your next steps. All of this is possible on your very first appointment at Avenues.

Contact Us for Complimentary Services and Peace of Mind

Because the team at Avenues knows how stressful this time can be, we offer a 24-hour hotline. If you need to talk, don’t hesitate to call (502) 695-0500. Or, you can conveniently contact us using our online Contact Form

We’re here for you from your very first visit and beyond. Trust us to care for you.

Wondering whether you are pregnant can bring a lot of questions. Symptoms like nausea, fatigue, or a missed period can point in that direction, but they are not a definitive answer on their own. Knowing for certain requires two things: a pregnancy test and, if the result is positive, an ultrasound.

At Avenues Clinic, we offer complimentary lab-grade pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds to help you get clear, accurate answers from the start. Make an appointment today.

What a Pregnancy Test Actually Tells You

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which your body begins producing after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. When used correctly after a missed period, home pregnancy tests claim to be up to 99% accurate.

A few situations can create false results:

  • Testing too early: hCG levels may not yet be high enough to detect.
  • Diluted urine: Testing later in the day or after drinking a lot of fluids can affect sensitivity.
  • Fertility medications: Some medications containing hCG can produce a false positive.
  • Incorrect use: Following the instructions carefully matters.

If your result is negative but your period has not arrived, it is recommended to retest about a week later. Lab-grade pregnancy testing from a clinic will give you greater confidence in your result than a home test alone.

Why a Positive Test Is Only the Beginning

A positive pregnancy test tells you that hCG is present. What it cannot tell you is where the pregnancy is located, how far along it is, or whether it is progressing. Those answers require an ultrasound.

A first-trimester ultrasound can confirm:

  • The pregnancy is located inside the uterus
  • Gestational age, or how far along you are
  • Whether the pregnancy appears viable by detecting a fetal heartbeat

This information is important for your health and for understanding your options. For example, an ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube, and affects roughly 2% of all pregnancies. It requires prompt medical attention. Early pregnancy loss (miscarriage) is also more common than many realize, occurring in about 10–20% of known pregnancies. An ultrasound can identify these situations early so you can receive the care you need.

Get Answers at No Cost

You do not have to search for answers online or wait in uncertainty. Avenues Clinic provides complimentary lab-grade pregnancy testing and ultrasounds in a confidential, supportive setting. Give Yourself Space to Process

An unplanned pregnancy can trigger a stress response that makes everything feel urgent. Emotions may come in waves, and that’s normal. Acknowledging how you feel without pressure to decide right away can help you think more clearly.

Here are a few ways to find peace during this news:

  • Stepping outside for a few minutes, whether that’s standing in the sun or taking a short walk
  • Writing down what’s been looping in your mind, not to solve it, but to release it
  • Taking a break from social media or conversations that increase anxiety
  • Reaching out to one trusted person so you’re not carrying everything alone

It’s also okay to set boundaries as you process this news. This might look like a break from online chats and social media or limiting time with people who begin to pressure you.

Take care of your mental and physical health during this time.

Replace “What-Ifs” with Clear Medical Information

Uncertainty can make an already emotional situation feel heavier. Confirming your pregnancy and learning key medical details can provide clarity and help you understand what comes next.

A lab-quality pregnancy test and ultrasound can offer information that a home test alone cannot, including:

  • Viability, confirmed by detecting a fetal heartbeat and ruling out miscarriage
  • Pregnancy location, ensuring your pregnancy is in the uterus and not ectopic
  • Gestational age, or how far along you are in your pregnancy

Having this information can help you feel steadier and informed as you consider next steps.

Learn About Your Options

Understanding your options can reduce pressure and help you consider what aligns best with your life. At Avenues Clinic, you can receive accurate information, ask questions, and discuss each option in a supportive setting, including:

  • Parenting support, such as medical referrals, mentoring, and help with practical needs
  • Adoption information and referrals to reputable agencies at no cost to you
  • Abortion education, including time-sensitive medical considerations and health information

If you’re not ready to decide yet, that’s okay. Gathering reliable information and taking things one step at a time is often a helpful place to start.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Support can make a real difference.

Avenues Clinic is here to provide compassionate care, clear information, and a safe space to talk through your concerns. Schedule a free and confidential appointment today to take a step toward a confident decision.

When facing an unplanned pregnancy, the weight of the decision can feel isolating and create pressure to choose a path quickly.

Major medical and life decisions made under stress can make it more difficult to consider your long-term health, values, and overall well-being. Speaking with a compassionate, professional third party allows you to pause, gather accurate information, and approach your next steps with clarity and confidence.

At Avenues Clinic, we offer a professional and supportive environment where you can explore your options without pressure. We offer free pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds, and more, so you can make informed choices.

Schedule a free, confidential appointment today to receive evidence-based guidance from our trained medical team.

Creating Space to Think Clearly

An unexpected pregnancy can trigger a heightened stress response, narrowing perspective and making decisions feel urgent. Speaking with a trained professional provides a private, structured space to sort your thoughts, reflect on your personal values, and process emotions safely.

Talking with someone at Avenues Clinic enables you to approach your options intentionally rather than reactively, providing confidence in your decision-making.

Understanding Your Medical Realities

Accurate medical information is essential when considering your options.

An ultrasound provides critical insights, including whether the pregnancy is progressing within the uterus. It will also estimate your gestational age and potential due date. These tests can also reveal situations such as a missed miscarriage, where the pregnancy may have stopped developing despite a positive test.

It also confirms that the pregnancy is in the uterus, ruling out an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus and requires urgent medical attention.

Reviewing these results with a trained medical professional ensures you have a complete picture, understand any health considerations or risks, and receive guidance on the next steps that are safest for your individual circumstances.

Navigating Outside Influences

Family, partners, friends, and online sources can create pressure that clouds judgment.

A professional consultation offers a neutral setting to focus on your personal needs and values. At Avenues Clinic, our team provides evidence-based education and guidance in a pressure-free environment, allowing you to reflect on your situation without external influence.

By separating external pressures from your personal values, you can make a choice that truly reflects what’s best for your health, well-being, and future.

A Path Toward Clarity

Speaking with a professional before making a decision can help you feel more relaxed as you consider your options. By combining compassionate conversation with lab-quality pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and options consultations, you will feel confident and informed.

You can explore parenting, adoption, and abortion, and learn of helpful resources in the community. Schedule a free, confidential appointment at Avenues Clinic today. Our team is here to provide professional care, clear information, and support as you consider your next steps.

Holidays often invite reflection. Even before the celebrations begin, you might find yourself thinking about where life has taken you this year and what you expected the future to hold.

Discovering you are pregnant, especially unexpectedly, can make this season feel different in ways you didn’t anticipate.

If the holidays feel heavier because of unanswered questions, Avenues Clinic provides free services, such as pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and education, so you can understand your pregnancy with compassionate support beside you.

Why This Season Can Feel Especially Intense

Unexpected pregnancy doesn’t erase the holidays around you, but it can change how you move through them. Many women describe a quiet contrast: the world is loud with celebration, while they quietly sort through questions that no one else can see. You may notice:

  • Ordinary conversations suddenly hold deeper weight
  • Events you once loved feel more tiring or emotional
  • Your mind is drifting toward decisions even while you’re surrounded by others

These reactions do not mean you’re out of step with the season; they mean you’re processing something important.

Create Emotional Room to Breathe

You don’t have to figure everything out between gatherings, and you don’t have to carry your thoughts nonstop. Try creating intentional pauses throughout the season:

  • A short drive alone before or after an event
  • Five minutes of quiet before getting out of the car
  • A walk around the block after a conversation that felt heavy

These small resets help your mind and emotions catch up with each other.

Let Information Be a Source of Calm

Even when emotions run high, reliable medical information can bring a sense of steadiness. An early ultrasound can help you understand:

  • Gestational age, which helps you understand how far along you are in your pregnancy
  • Whether there’s a fetal heartbeat, which is an important indicator of a progressing pregnancy
  • Whether the pregnancy is developing in the uterus, ruling out ectopic pregnancy

Having these answers can help you understand all your options and seek any necessary medical help for serious health conditions.

Support Can Make This Season Feel More Manageable

You deserve a space where you can get your questions answered and learn about resources. Avenues Clinic is here to walk with you, offering confidential care and clear information whenever you’re ready.

Reach out to schedule a complimentary appointment. You don’t have to do this alone.
