Is it just me or are women stepping into their power like never ever before?

I’m obsessed with women lately. OBSESSED. (Don’t worry Nick – you still my number one boo thang). But I’ve absolutely loved learning more about the women in my life, and wider community, through following their journeys, having really deep conversations about their pursuits and passions and the projects, cheerleading their wins and watching them (marvelling) at their lows or set backs.

Women are made from something special. We are resilient, yet we are simultaneously soft and surrendering. We are powerful, yet delicate. Focused, yet carefree. We are nailing the poetic dance between the masculine and the feminine – and it’s created a shift.

Women creatives are everywhere – women creating homes and spaces, women creating families, women creating businesses and enterprises, women creating (literal) magic, women creating art and music. I think we have tapped into this little well of inspiration, and I think a little sprinkle of permission too, which has empowered us to just frikkin SHINE! I don’t mean to sound naive and starry eyed, but there’s no other way to describe it. Women are rocking a glow and a sense of self assuredness that I don’t think has existed in a very long time!

Cue another one of my obsessions. Lineage. After reading “The Red Tent”, I was enthralled in the storylines of women’s strength in adversity, their ability to overcome, of their fortitude despite being whacked with the adage “a women’s lot in life is to suffer. To be a woman is to suffer”. Which, I’d like to quickly add, has serendipitously come up a number of times in recent weeks in the books I’ve been reading, podcasts I’ve been listening too and films I’ve been watching. I get it Universe, womanhood equals suffering.

Women today certainly don’t have it all figured out and haven’t been “cured” of any inequalities. At the top of the social pyramid, middle to upper class women might not see the overwhelming presence of patriarchal systems and we are pretty frikkin lucky with how much things have seemingly changed. But it’s ignorant to think that our privileged experience is the only experience. When women in situations different to ours – in different socio economic states, of different cultures and countries, of different gender identities and sexualities – continue to experience oppression and violence and silencing, we can’t say the battle is over.

I say all this because I don’t want this current train of thought and exploration of “the wonder that is women” to be said without FULL acknowledgement of the very very privileged place from which I write.

But the sacrifice and journeys of the women before us are just so staggering to me and this sense of lineage – of the women who have all led lives that have culminated in me having this life right here and now – is all prevailing. I’ve got SUCH a richer appreciation for my mama, grandmothers, great grandmothers, and the women before them. The ones who did it frikkin tough. And who made way for the women of today, who are the ones that I write about today. Making, doing, living and inspiring.

I’m so proud of my double X chromosomes, of the women around me and the rise of the feminine.

Because, guess what? It’s never been more clear that “The Future is Female”.

Blessings and titties and fannies x

Does anyone else love those stories of ‘late in life’ successes? You know, the ole ‘you’re never too young to get started’ adage? I have been known to POUR over articles that tell me that Julia Child was 49 when she changed the cooking game, that Ellen started her talk show at 45, that a woman recently gave birth to a healthy baby at 72. If there lives have only JUST hit these milestones, goals and aspirations – then I’m sure it’s fine that I haven’t yet achieved x, y and z. And then it kind of dawned on me. As tolerant and accepting and open minded as I try to be – not wanting to buy into any prejudice or any ‘-isms’, I am a full blown agist*.

But this agism only really applies to myself. Something I think we are all guilty of, applying a unique set of standards and criteria to ourselves, while allowing fluidity and exceptions to our loved ones.

My friend gets their first promotion at 41? Go girl, you’re killing it. My mum launches a business at 60? Epic, power to ya! My mate gets married at 50? YAS, celebrate that love.

But when I reflect on my upcoming 31st rotation round the sun? No dice. I’m overwhelmed by thoughts of ‘but this isn’t what 31 was meant to look like’, ‘I should be/have x, y or z at this point!’ and ‘now I can NEVER make the 30 under 30 list!’ (the last one was a legit epiphany that struck me a few weeks back. Tragic, I know). I called my partner saying ‘I wish I was turning 27 on Friday. It would just feel so good to be where I am right now, but still have 4 years to get to this birthday’.

So, because writing is therapy, I wanted to explore this concept of agism. Why we glorify youth and highlight achievements/accomplishments when they take place in certain decades versus a few years later. Why do we still treat life a little like a race, with certain ‘check in’ points and boxes to tick and places to ‘arrive at’? Everyone’s life is different – everyone has certain areas in which they are flying, and others that resemble a little more of a ‘crash zone’. Someone might be killing it at work, and struggling as a mama at home. ‘World’s best partner’ might be a hot mess when the doors close and they’re alone with their own thoughts. You might be on track to buy your first house at 52. Or planning an overseas holiday for 81. Lives aren’t made to be ‘cookie cutter’ in their uniformity. They’re more like those last minute batch cookies that you whip up and they grown inconsistently across the tray, no two alike, but all effing delicious.

As life often is when you keep an eye out for signs, it’s synchronicity can point you towards a lesson or learning that you need to wise up on. Case in point this week where, after having already penned the majority of this rambly little birthday article, I discovered the ‘Be-Bolder’ blog. It’s creators, in their mid thirties (do you see a trend here of 30 plus age crises), were so sick of the negative conversations and nuances around aging that they wanted to do a photo/profile project to capture what aging COULD look like. The result is an inspiring amalgamation of older people who refine getter ‘older’ as less limiting and more effing empowering.

So as I pour over stories of these incredible humans, whose age is but just a number, on the eve of my 31st birthday, I’m reminded that age is just a number and I hope (God willing) that I’m blessed with many more numbers to come.

Blessings and SO many fucking candles to blow out x

There’s been an ample (read: furgin’ gigantic) break between posts. And I finally think that I figured out why. Shit got too dang heavy. Whenever I sat down to write – I would often tackle a huge topic (i.e. death and grieving; spirituality; goals and ambition; purpose and passion etc). That’s all well and good but sometimes, we just want light.

Lightness in every sense of the word. Lightness in mind, body and spirit.

So coming at you today is a lightness prescription for 2019 to carpé that diem and lighten the bleep up.

Light Listening – My Dad Wrote a Porno. This has had me in stitches on my commutes up and back from the big smoke. And, for the first time in a long time, I’m not listening to something for ‘growth’ or ‘inspiration’ or ‘learning’, it’s for pure joy and a wee bit of smut. Winning combo.

Light Viewing How about some literal ‘light viewing’. Trade your hitting the snooze button for a few mornings down the beach and watching the sunrise. There are some banger sunrises that we are treated to over Summer here on the West Coast of Australia. I cannot emphasise enough how much joy it brings to your day AND how much more productive you are for having risen with the sun.

For some more light viewing – this is what I’ve been watching every hour on the hour since it was sent to me …

Light Reading Everything I Know About Love. So funny. So good. Super light.

Light Thinking – Headspace app. This is the bestest app ever ever. I adore it and it makes me feel so mentally light and spacious. It’s brilliantly packaged, marketed, accessible and incredibly powerful. Side note – I love Andy Puddicombe. Check out his TEDx talk below. Swoon slash inspo – an amazing mind doing amazing work.

Light Bodies – Beginning of a new year often calls for a bit of a reset and, maybe, the inclusion of some healthful resolutions. Health in terms of eating light (think salads, sautéed vegetables and nori or rice paper rolls) and moving da body. I’ve fallen back in love with home circuits and someone that got me super pumped for them during her ’12 days of Fitmas’ challenge. Dr Hazel Wallace is a phenomenal doctor, personal trainer and lifestyle expert. So there you go. Get light and get lit.

Happy 2019 my hunnies!

Blessings and epic vibes x

Heads up – I’m a female. A straight female. This is the only experience and reality that I personally know. So this is where I write from. The post below talks about women and men from a very heteronormative place. I don’t mean to offend or upset anyone who identifies differently.

Ok. Carry on.

Is it just me or is feminism and ‘yas queen’ and ‘girl power’ on roids right now? I’m all for women’s self empowerment, like completely and utterly, and believe that a strong woman is capable of anything she sets her sights on. So definitely no need to tar me with that old ‘you’re setting women back hundreds of years’ brush. I love being a woman, I love supporting women, I love being surrounded by women … but, in all honesty, I kind of love men just as much.

I just felt that I had to state that, and explain myself a little, because so often being feminist and advocating for equality is seen as synonymous with man-hating.

This was brought to my attention recently when I was back home, visiting my parents, and was talking about an article that I had heard about explaining that same sex reproduction was being trialed. That is, two ova were being joined to make a little human, and no man was required. In a nutshell – we are fast figuring out a way to allow same sex couples to reproduce. Same sex female couples. From what I understood, as women carry the double X chromosomes, they can successfully create another female baby using their genetic material. This is an option, exclusively available to women. Which sucks. I believe that all same sex couples are deserving of having biological children, and this is certainly a win for my same sex sisters, but I do really feel for men in this situation. Anyway, back to the household discussion. My dad, a very intelligent man and easily one of my favourite people on the planet, pipes up quite solemnly. ‘It’s scary. All of this feminism is waging war between the sexes. It’s been getting worse and worse. It’s going to get to the point, in years down the track, that women will make sure men are obsolete’. He emphasized that this wasn’t an attack on me, that he never felt like I was pushing an agenda on him and he infact said that I was a ‘good feminist’. But he honestly seemed so perturbed by the concept, almost a little scared, that the gender he identifies with and the role he’s played for nearly 60 years will become irrelevant. And, like Carey Bradshaw, it got me to thinking.

What if it’s the stories that we, as a female collective, are telling ourselves and one another about men and their stupidity/arrogance/sameness/faults, that are perpetuating this within our reality? The whole ‘if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?’. If a man is going about his world, and a woman never presumes that he is a dick, will he even act dickishly?

If men are constantly thinking that their every action is being judged by women, that their presence is a burden, that they are redundant, that they don’t bring anything to the table that a woman can’t do herself or find in her friends – then of course they’re going to act out or pull back or be a douche. Men want to feel appreciated (as do women), they want to feel loved (as do women), they want to feel like they’re providing for us. We all deserve love, respect and joy. These aren’t gender specific experiences.

I do believe that recent stories in our world and recent presidential elections have not painted men in the most flattering of lights. These men, and some men, are scumbags. That there’s an underlying misogyny that is at play, every single day, in our local and wider communities. But not every man subscribes to that And not every man is behaving the way we are being told they are. I do believe, totally and utterly, that something needs to change within the current culture. I don’t believe it’s right for a woman to have to be more cautious than males when out at night, that her right to a career and family and identify outside of all of these roles is compromised compared to her male partner, that women are expected to look, act, talk, think in a certain way. I don’t believe in any of that, and I will passionately explore this and fight for this in my own life with every passing day.

But not all men think in opposition to this.

I am privy to the old ‘I am woman, hear me roar’ adage. I have definitely shared memes with my girlfriends that have pertained to the concept of female superiority. But if we take a step back, and see things from the male perspective, it’s kind of messed up. “A woman without a man, is like a fish without a bicycle’ – Gloria Steinem. Can you even imagine if we were bombarded with empowering slogans shared by men that made our existence totally redundant. We would absolutely spit chips.

In all of my life choices, I consider all positions and perspectives and sides of the same coin. Because I believe in species equality, I don’t eat meat. That is, I don’t believe that the life of an animal is owed to me because I’m human. I believe in sharing this planet with compassion, kindness and without harm. I extend this same line of thinking to sex and gender. I wholeheartedly advocate for women’s rights because I’m passionate about women’s right to occupy space on this planet. We are smart, compassionate, powerful and strong. We deserve lives that exceed our wildest dreams, and deserve equal opportunity within all aspects of those lives. But making men the enemy, rather than seeing them as potential allies, is just problematic and scary. By all means, make enemies of those with a blatant disregard for equality, with those who lack understanding and respect and who are closed minded. But don’t assume that all men fit that bill.

A world without men is something we joke about in bars, over cocktails with the girls, giggling and saying that ‘oh if we were married instead, I’d write you love poems, and draw you a bath, and we’d only have sex if we both wanted to!’ cue laughter. But unless we really start to acknowledge and appreciate the men who are standing beside us and honouring our fight, then we are closer than we realise to losing them from our lives.

So here’s to the men who I have known, and those I’m yet to meet, who have been loving, respectful, patient, kind, supportive and accepting of everything I am and all that I stand for. The world needs more men like you. Stand tall and be a beacon.

Blessings and masculine hugs x

So in bumbling Emily fashion – here they are. Shit that I’m done with (the 29 to 30 edition).

Clictivism

Small acts of social media activism that don’t actually help to alleviate the cause. Education and awareness are vital tools within any humanitarian endeavour – I get that. But, for me, awareness alone just is not enough anymore. I want to learn more about how I can use my insane (and totally down to luck) privelage to support issues near and dear to my heart. Namely maternal and child health, period poverty and climate change. I will be dedicating a lot more of my time, energy and resources to helping these causes (really truly trying to make a dent in their cruel presence) over the coming months.

Comparison

Oh if ever there was a thing that I was well and truly over – it’s this bad boy! I’m (fucking) done spending even one more day or minute wishing I was someone different or wishing I was a more polished version of myself. I am instead impassioned to focus on all of me – the duality of my imperfections – my flaws and flawlessness. Not even a second of this life is going to go un-noted or unappreciated (she says very ambitiously but totally gets that this one will be an ongoing little battle).

Avoiding the keyboard and losing my voice

Writing has been absolutely lost on me in the last twelve months. Since the beginning of the year (and maybe even longer) I swapped creating content in favour of immersing myself in content. It’s been a year of reading, listening, reflecting, engaging and now I’m excited to pursue projects in which I am the author and can penn my experiences. This may also look like exploring the world a little differently with podcasts or video series or collaborations that allow me to create and explore.

Hangovers

They say you don’t quite shake hangovers in your 30s like you do in your 20s, and I’m starting to fear it’s all too true. I’m done with losing my Sunday mornings to side splitting headaches, missing sunrise because I can’t get off the loo and soaked in post drunk regret and guilt. I will never (never say never but … most likely it’s never) give up a celebratory glass of bubbles to cheer my loved ones’ promotions, engagements or birthdays. But six or seven cocktails is losing its appeal. Again, like booting comparison, this one is likely to lapse and I’ll forget my intentions whilst sinking a tenth shot with the girls at their Hens. But for now it feels inviting and right.

simple-sketch-drawing-1

Approaching 30 initially felt scary, as I mourned the loss of my youthful 20s. I found myself clinging to 29 like nobody’s bidniz. I think I was unconsciously subscribing to the societally perpetuated concept of “young is better” and that, at 30, I’m fast passing my prime.

But now, 30 feels like a big hug. A giant permission slip, and blank slate, to show up in the world as the exact, whole, perfectly flawed human that the past thirty years have chiseled. The past decade has shaped me far more than its predecessor (10 to 19 year old Emily was still a people pleasing goody good methinks) and I’m so grateful to these years of challenge, self discovery, growth, rebirth and, above all, so much fucking fortune and love.

So I salute my 20s, thanking them for all they’ve given me, but I walk willingly and gladly into the next age box of 30-39. Where there seems to be an overall “no fucks given” theme starting to emerge – where I refuse to give proverbials to anything that doesn’t serve me or my loved ones (which includes the planet and my fellow humans as a collective, not just my besties) and I see it as my birth rite and, pretty much, my duty (don’t overthink this one, I realise I’m not a leader or Monarch but you get the gist) to live and experience the world totally and completely without judgement, guilt or overthought.

Simple, kind, connected and awe inspired living. This is how 30 feels.

Fucking delicious.

Blessings and thirty rotations around the sun x

I came across the concept of multipotentialites in a TEDx talk by Emilie Wapnick (I know, even her name is like mine, but spelt cooler and weirdly incorporates my partner’s name into the surname … Weird) a few months back. As soon as I finished the podcast, I texted my boyfriend and sent him the link saying, ‘I have never felt more understood *allelujiah hands’. His reply? ‘Shit, this podcast is about you.’ The term ‘multipurposite’ was born of the premise it that, in life, we are often encouraged to #findourgifts. You know, our unique talents and underlying prowess that will, no doubt, steer the course of our lives? Those little buggers.

But what if, like me, you feel kind of shafted in the ‘special gifts’ department?

I’ve watched countless YouTube videos on ‘uncovering your passion’, ‘realising your gift’, ‘finding your purpose’, ‘unlocking your genius’ and … I feel no more uncovered, realised, found or unlocked. I feel frustrated that so many people whom I’ve crossed paths with, seem so ‘actualised’ and so certain of their role in this world. Meanwhile I’m jumping from yoga to cooking to environmentalism to language and books to relationships to psychology to spirituality – like it ain’t no thing.

Now, before this is perceived as a ‘I don’t got no talents and specialness’ piece, let me steer you a little more toward my way of thinking and the inspiration for today’s post. I’m not at all unhappy in my pursuit of my ‘purpose’. In fact, I’m dizzyingly happy and inspired. All the time. I’ve been told that I’d likely be one of those people who, thrown into any job, would find her feet and find enjoyment out of it. I own an epic private practice, where I proudly and loudly wear my speech pathology and manager hats, and I feel like I get to make a difference and really support and nurture other people’s voice and confidence. It’s amazing.

But then I get home, read an article or see a short video about someone doing something amazing that lights both them and myself up, and I’m like. THAT. That is what I’m chasing. Or I’ll be chatting to a friend and they’ll encourage me to pursue something, like teaching or coaching or collaborative workshops, and I’m all YES. For a few days. Or then I’ll be typing away at the keypad, write something that resonates with one or two people (or more if I’m lucky) and then they’ll emphatically tell me ‘keep writing, this is it!’.

And I love all of those things. Writing, speech pathology, teaching, coaching, collaborating. I love them all in equal measure. That’s the thing. And, since listening to Emilie’s TEDxtalk, it’s the thing I’ve realised we mulitpotentialites have in common.

There’s no one thing that lights us up. Every single day, our creative heart is being pulled in a million directions. We are constantly scribbling down business ideas, career pathways, courses to enrol in, books to buy, people to talk to – our mind is forever entertaining a multitude of possibilities and creative endeavours.

And the take away message is … that’s totally ok.

It’s ok to have one passion. It’s just as ok to have a thousand. It’s ok to have one career. It’s just as ok to have ten over the course of 5 years.

Because, my friends, here’s the crux of it and the reason we seek to grow and learn and expand and excel. We get one life. One. Depending on whether you believe in reincarnation or the recycling of our souls (I’m personally manifesting that I come back as Chris Pratt’s bedsheets), this is the one chance we get at total and complete self expression. Being able to figure out what turns you on, taps you in and lights you up and calling that into your life erry single day, THAT is the aim of the game baby.

So to all my fellow multipotentialites, with dizzingly high ambition and a thousand scrawled upon notebooks, this is just a love note to say – the world needs your magic too. It needs your relentless passion and exploration and insatiable curiosity. AND my girl Marie Forleo did an interview with Franchesca Ramsey all about navigating your multipassionate heart within business, check it our here.

And to my one-path, one-passion, one-divine gift amigos. Go you good things. Share your love and passion and interests with people far and wide. Become an expert in all things ‘you’ and magnify that with your work, learnings and teachings.

Blessings and about a million projects on the go (which is totes fine) x

Also – a disclaimer – This piece was kind of born from my struggling to come up with a post for, oh I don’t know, frikkin 1087 years. The hiatus is the epitomised reflection of my multipotentialites personality. I have been researching all kinds of things, looking into podcast hosting, more writing opportunities, collaborations, videos … and hence this humble blog was left on the backburner. Thank you for your love and patience.

For the past ten years, roughly, I have firmly established behaviours and practices that foster high levels of productivity (note – I just stopped writing to check my email) and have led me to being, accurately, perceived as a ‘do-er’. I juggle quite a few commitments at a time, I run a private practice, I balance my relationships, but …

I can not switch off.

Although the ability to switch ‘on’ and to be engaged and focused and to meet deadlines, tick off ‘to do lists’ and be organized is one that I am entirely grateful for, I’m starting to see a little more of its shadow side. The checking of phone calls, texts and emails far too many times throughout the day to make sure all possible actionable things are actioned; the over planning of routes and weekends and events because we account for every possible error or oversight; the overwhelming dread when, through factors beyond our control, we are uncharacteristically late or something important slips our mind. It doesn’t take Einstein to figure out what’s the driving force behind someone like me and why, perhaps, they’re so fixated on never derailing or ‘failing’. It’s caring too much. Caring too much about what others think, of how we’re showing up in the world, of ‘failing’, of not meeting the expectations and standards that we set for ourselves.

This isn’t at all a ‘woe is me’ little wallow of a post. I’m epically grateful for my insane productive prowess and I know that this brain of mine, and how it’s wired, is 90% blessing. But this is just a post for others of you, like me, who find it increasingly difficult to unplug, switch off and be unproductive for a few hours.

Side note before we delve into some tips and tricks – ‘unproductive’ is not ‘counterproductive’. Counterproductive is an intentional derailing of productivity; being unproductive is a passive and more simplified process and is just … being. Not having an agenda, or goal list, but just enjoying the nothingness. Counter productiveness is tearing up the agenda, flipping off the goal list (or actively doing the opposite of everything on the list) and enjoying destructiveness.

THREE TIPS FOR UNPRODUCTIVITY

1 – be uncontactable (some of the time). This feels weird. But setting boundaries around the times that people can reach you (work, personal or other) is imperative to your unproductive self. 50 email checks a day is not healthy, setting aside 30min at 10am and 3pm (to catch the morning and afternoon email batches) is. Responding to every single text or notification on your phone within seconds is, generally, not healthy. Leaving your phone to go for a beach run, coming home and enjoying a glass of water, then settling in to respond, is.

2 – meditate. This isn’t me being preachy or new agey or whatever, but meditation and simple stillness fosters greater presence. It isn’t new information and it isn’t groundbreaking, but it can be lifechanging. Setting aside 10 to 20minutes (or whatever you can muster, 5 minutes is totally fine too) once or twice a day to simply sit, connect in with your breath and pause, can radically reduce your stress and anxiety. It can promote greater peace, positivity, mindfulness and presence. Don’t hesitate, just meditate, #rhyme.

3 – scrap the goal list. I have just revisited Danielle LaPorte’s The Desire Map as book number 23 for the year (… some goals stick) and I actually encountered something pretty amazing. Throughout the book, readers are encouraged to highlight and recognize their ‘core desired feelings’. These are the feelings that are at the crux of all of our decisions, goals and choices. These feelings govern much of what we choose to experience and participate in. I redid the exercises, defined my core desireds and then got to the tail end of the book when it comes to using these feelings to fuel your goals. How can a desired feeling of ‘love’ be explored in your life, for example? Maybe it’s signing up for that workshop, or signing up to a dating agency or saying ‘yes’ to that dress. But when it came to creating my ‘goals’ I drew blanks. It’s a time, now, to focus more on how I feel, and setting the intention to cultivate these feelings however I can in my day to day. Goals are the actionable tasks and to dos that we must ‘achieve’; intentions are the ways we infuse purpose and mindfulness into even the most mundane of tasks. Scrap the goals, just for a while, and opt for intentionality.

If this struck a chord with you, or you’re interested in learning more about productivity in the modern world, join me in my next read. Wisdom 2.0 is both the book title and labour of love for Soren Gordhamer. It’s his answer to the technologically saturated world that we live in and the exploration of its triumphs and pitfalls. With the colder weather closing in, the daylight hours growing less and less each day, the winding down of late nights and early mornings, we find ourselves called to pull back, pause and be still.

The Yang energy of summer, with its hustle and bustle, its ever mounting adventures, its allure of seemingly endless balmy evenings has propelled us forward in our goals and our lives. We may have been inspired to take that trip. Replant the garden. Spend time outdoors with our loves. Getting sweaty on hikes. Eat. Drink. Party. Repeat. The infectious energy of summer invigorates us and calls us to amp things up a notch. It’s the season of doing. Of action. And of drive.

Well. It’s easy to see then why I fucking love summer. It’s me in a nutshell. One part bounding energy, one part sunshine and one part happiness.

And on the flip side, it ain’t hard to see why winter can be a bit of a drag for Yang enthusiasts like myself.

Winter is all Yin baby. It’s the slowing down. The retreat and renewal. It’s about days spent nurturing ourselves and our families. Refilling our cup that was pretty much guzzled by its predecessing seasons. It’s warming meals. It’s fireplaces and books. It’s receiving, rather than giving. It’s cuddles and blankets. It’s the snooze button of our metaphorical alarm of life, that saw us jumping out of bed at crack of dawn just months before. It’s the plugging in of an iPhone as it’s glaring “1%” signals its overuse and that it’s overdone. We are the iPhone and it’s time to plug up and airplane mode, honey.

“But I can’t factor in some Yin lovin’ Em, I’ve got too much to do?!”. Firstly, I hear ya. I oppose yin energy like the plague so, so often. Since I first learnt about the masculine and feminine, the yang and yin, the doing and being – I quickly realised what side of the tracks I had set up camp in. I was/am a full time Yanger, Masculine, doer. So like I said, I hear ya.

But my darling, if you can visualise now that ever famous Ying and Yan symbol, a perfectly and symmetrically divided circle comprised of equal parts light and dark, a piece little of each spilling into its neighbours boundaries … We are that circle. A whole and ever perfect little entity, with equal parts light and dark, fast and slow, positive and negative, up and down, cold and hot. Ourselves and the world around us exist in an ever evolving dance between dualities such as these, with none really possibly existing without the other. The bad allows the good, the pain allows the joy, the emptiness allows fullness.

So too it works with seasons. The doing cannot exist without the being. The summer sun cannot be appreciated without the winter chills. The hustle cannot be achieved without the pause. And so, as if perfectly architectured, our physical world gives us little reminders of this intertwined and cyclical play of energies. The days shorten, luring us to stay in bed a little longer; our social commitments lull just a little, allowing space to unwind solo; our bodies crave something different, swapping sweaty park workouts for yoga by the fire.

This is simply a little reminder (cough, permission slip) for my fellow Yangers. A reminder that it’s in the interplay of the go and stop that magic happens, that when we slow down the pace of our lives (even just a fraction) we carve space for our next brilliant idea or project to come through.

Here’s to changing seasons and to loving the shit out of the change in pace.

Blessings and yin soaked day dreams x

Here’s the sitch.

Some of my nearest and dearest peoples in my life have traveled to Vietnam in the past, and swear by its beauty, uniqueness and wonder. I, on the other hand, haphazardly booked a flight to Vietnam sometime last year, when my UK based travel buddy and I decided to make the most of the 14 day school holidays in April and meet up ‘halfway’ for a little Asian rendezvous.

However, this holiday coincided with a few huge happenings. The settlement of my home, the crazy build up of my business, extra curricular commitments coming out of my eyeballs, and so on. SO when the trip finally, and excitedly, rolled around … I found myself sitting on a plane, bound for Hanoi, with absolutely no idea about where I was going, what I’d likely see and experience and what the heck Vietnam had to offer.

So this is my ‘learn on the fly’ guide to Vietnam and a bit of a reflection of two wonderful weeks spent abroad in this wonderful, dualistic, happy little country.

DEETS //

Dates – April to May 2018

Cities/Towns travelled – Hanoi; Halong Bay; Ninh Binh; Hue; Hoi Ann and Ho Chi Minh.

Forms of transport – Plane, boat, kayak, walk, bicycle, motorbike, vespa, train, taxi.

Currency – Vietnamese dong [Officially my favourite currency. Ever].

HANOI //

This was the first city of le tour and, thus, was my first taste into Vietnam culture and vibe. Holy hectic balls. I am a fully fledged country girl these days, crowds and frenetic energy overwhelms me, so you can imagine my (slight) overwhelm when it came to gettin’ dropped in this big city. It was a little smokey, a little (lotta) traffic laden and very very fast paced.

I did a self guided tour walk on the first way, making my way from the old quarter to the lake. Watching Vietnamese locals do Tai Chi is quite possibly my new favourite pastime, p.s. It felt safe to venture out solo but the navigation through this busy and bustling city was a little challenging at times, for me anyway. With my travel plus one in tow the next morning, we headed out to see a little more of the traditional and noted sights in the area. Kicking things off with a rip off taxi (when in Vietnam, right?) to the Botanical Gardens, we ventured to the Ho Chi Min mosaleum and the One Pillar Pagoda. They were … fine. Nothing to write home about, from my very humble perspective, but a good way to spend the day.

The night is where Hanoi really shows off. As soon as the sun goes down, the pace of life amps up a little more (if that’s even possible) but in a really contagious way. We were lucky enough to join Vespa Adventures for a food tour and, by George, it was amazing. Beer cocktails, deep fried sweet potato, Vietnamese salad, morning glory (the food kind), Bun Cha, Pho … the list of delicacies were endless and all enjoyed via vespa! If you’re in Hanoi, it’s definitely worth looking into a tour with these guys – their service and knowledge were second to none.

You can’t possibly visit Hanoi without a quick ‘hello’ to Beer Junction//Beer Corner. Aptly named because the main export from kitchen to kerb is beer. All kinds of beer. A word of warning – because we were absolutely floored when it happened to us … if you notice errybody up in the street going nutso, an old Vietnmaese lady shoos you off your plastic stool and grabs it from under you and hurries you off, without even the chance to ask ‘what the heckkkkk?’ … chances are you’re in the midst of a random police patrol. The police vans, and po po themselves, cruise down the junction and if they’re able to snag a stool or two, it’s been a good night for the boys. Basically street drinking (i..e drinking beyond the borders of the kerb) is a no no, but in a weird “we’ll pretend we don’t see and make a game of it” kind of situation – the shop owners pretend to comply (getting people out who are beyond their bar borders), the police pretend to patrol (we literally saw a policeman sneak behind a group of people, to steal a $2 plastic stool from an unsuspecting middle aged Vietnamese woman with a clipboard) and, bizarrely, when the police have walked past a mere 15m – out come the stools and drinks and customers are warmly welcomed back. It’s amazing to watch and be a part of. Just try to nab a stool inside.

Coming up on ze blog … Halong Bay and Ninh Binh.

Blessings, beer and police patrols x

This isn’t a “love yourself”, “everyBODY is beautiful”, “YOU are perfectly imperfect” kind of post. Although … I’m sure those messages will inadvertently weave their way into here. I am writing this from a place that I haven’t ever gotten to in my years of self work, personal development and hustle …

Realising that that outward appearances aren’t all that furgin important. I know, revelationary isn’t it. While the sentiment of “you can’t judge a book by its cover” is one that I have both been exposed to, and preached, it has always still been a little more “oh that’s lovely in theory, but everyone knows it’s bullocks”.

Most of my little epiphanies and breakthroughs happen whilst I’m away. The new environment and constantly changing back drop clears the weeds out of my mind, and allows me to adopt a little difference in perspective. Thinking becomes easier, automated and free. So, why would this trip be any different?

On the beach and reading my way through my 4th book of the trip – I became insanely grateful for my mind. This brain of mine that constantly questions, challenges, grows, evolves and seeks is by far my strongest asset. And shouldn’t that always be our sexiest feature? Not our skin if we finally managed to make it #flawless, not our flat tummy after doing 1000 crunches daily, not our size 6 or 10 or 16 body (depending on societal ideologies) but rather the one part of us that allows us to experience, engage with and perceive this big ole world around us.

So often you become “snap happy” on holiday too. Everything becomes a photo op – whether it’s a temple, a beach, a meal or whatever. And, often, us humans get papped too. I, like I’m sure many of you, will often get caught up scrutinising what I look like in the photo. Whether the lighting enhanced my side flub, extra chin or bumpy skin and then berating myself for the imperfections. But this trip I have been trying to notice how happy I am in each picture or how stunning the scenery is that I’m fortunate enough to be in or just how full my bloody heart is.

If I woke up with a flat tummy or a 9 month preggo baby bloat – my experience of the day would not at all change. If I had clear vibrant skin or a face full of spots – my ability to savour the flavours and textures of an epic meal would not be impeded. If I was a size 2 or my current sturdy little bod – I imagine that scaling a mountain or riding a bike cross country wouldn’t be influenced. (Although my deliciously chunky Arnold Shwartz legs would likely put me in better stead).

Our ability to see and experience the world, and all of its beauty and ugliness, is our biggest gift. And it doesn’t matter whether we wore blue or pink shorts the day we watched that killer sunset, the size of the pimple on our forehead when we met our niece for the first time and her tiny hand held our finger, the few extra kilos we were carrying when the person we loved whispered “I love you”, the fact that you were too tall/short, fat/thin, clear skinned/pimply AF when you enjoyed a dinner party with your nearest and dearest. None of these things matter when you are present and immersed in the beauty of that moment.

So here’s to loving our minds, appreciating our unique physicalities and diving headfirst into every experience imaginable during our finite time on earth. Because THAT’S the most bangin’ and beautiful thing we could ever hope to achieve anyway, no?

Blessings and bountiful body love x
