How is MSF responding in Venezuela?

Donating medical supplies

As one of the only international aid organizations present in the first hours following the disaster, MSF was able to fill critical supply gaps when hospitals exhausted their emergency stocks. Our teams distributed emergency trauma kits and medical supplies to hospitals in Caracas and La Guaira, covering about 10,000 injured patients. We have donated 8.5 tons of emergency medical supplies.

MSF is also supporting the central morgue with a donation of 1,000 body bags, personal protective equipment (PPE), and disinfectant.

Operating mobile clinics

MSF runs mobile clinics in areas facing some of the greatest humanitarian needs and operational gaps, including the cities of Naiguatá and Catia La Mar in La Guaira state. Our 12-person team — which includes a medical doctor, a psychologist, a health promoter, an environmental health specialist, and nurses — is primarily treating cases of diarrhea, respiratory illnesses, and skin conditions. All of these illnesses spread easily in the poor, crowded conditions in shelters where displaced people are living, often without water and sanitation access. Over the past month, our teams have conducted 2,217 medical consultations.

MSF also maintains permanent mobile clinic teams in Playa Verde and Caracas.

Supporting water and sanitation

Water and sanitation are a key part of MSF’s earthquake response, helping to prevent disease outbreaks and allow people to live in dignified conditions with access to safe water, showers, and toilets. Our teams are monitoring for waterborne diseases as well as mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. To reduce the risks, we are also assessing water sources, sanitation conditions, and disease surveillance needs in affected areas. Activities may include water trucking, chlorination of water supplies, emergency latrines, hygiene kit distributions, and regular mobile clinic visits to shelters and gathering sites.

M23 has been progressively taking over territory in eastern DRC since 2022, and the fighting intensified in January 2024, causing mass casualties and displacement. The conflict has impacted people’s access to health care, food, and other basic needs, triggering mass waves of displacement and raising the risk of disease outbreaks.

2025 escalation

M23/AFC is now in control of parts of North Kivu, including Goma, and has quickly continued its advance into South Kivu, capturing the strategic towns of Kalehe and Kavumu. As a result of the fighting, many people—including those who were already displaced—are now on the move again.

Despite the hostilities, MSF teams continue to provide medical assistance to affected communities through regular and emergency projects in North and South Kivu.

Armed clashes with the M23/AFC are also taking place in other parts of North Kivu, such as Masisi and Mweso, where we are carrying out medical activities, as well as in South Kivu, where M23/AFC have also made progress in recent weeks, taking over the town of Kalehe and moving the front line to just a few kilometers away from Kavumu. Fighting in the region is ongoing and continues to trigger population movements further south.

MSF response in Goma

In the first days of the escalation in Goma, the fighting forced MSF to partially reduce activities in some displacement camps and temporarily withdraw some staff from several medical facilities and offices in Goma, however we continued to care for the wounded at Kyeshero Hospital. After several days of violence and looting in Goma, the situation de-escalated somewhat, allowing MSF teams to resume activities in and around Goma. These activities include:

supporting Kyeshero and Virunga hospitals in treating wounded people;

collecting and distributing blood bags for overwhelmed hospitals;

returning to several displacement sites to support local health centers; expand or re-establish cholera treatment units and special clinics for survivors of sexual violence; provide food, water, and fuel for water pumping stations; and empty latrines and install hand-washing facilities.

Priorities at this stage remain caring for the wounded and reducing the risk of cholera outbreaks, which is a concern due to unsafe water sources, inadequate sanitation, and displacement. MSF teams continue to assess humanitarian needs every day, both in the camps and in the city of Goma, as the impact on the population is enormous. The next few days will allow us to assess the next steps.

Over 8 million people are internally displaced across DRC, including 500,000 who have been displaced by the current fighting since January 2025. The situation for displaced people was already dire before the current escalation, particularly in the camps around Goma. Over the years they have grown more crowded and living conditions have deteriorated further, with severely limited access to basic needs such as proper shelter, food, water, sanitation facilities, and health care. Displaced people living in these conditions face high risk of falling ill.

For people leaving the camps, MSF is particularly concerned about the level of access to health services when they arrive in their new location. After several years of war, many health facilities have been looted or abandoned and will be unable to provide adequate medical care to those who need it, either now or in the longer term. The situation in the places people have fled is likely to be equally disastrous if NGOs, UN agencies, and authorities fail to provide the minimum level of essential services.

To ensure a minimum level of health care for displaced people in areas of return, MSF has set up mobile clinics on roads leading out of Goma to the east and the north. MSF teams are also carrying out assessments in the areas to which people are returning.

Many of the already-displaced people living in these camps are fleeing yet again, as the fighting has taken place in and around Goma.

The war in Sudan has created one of the biggest humanitarian and displacement crises in the world, but it is receiving little international attention. Warring parties and their allies are inflicting severe suffering, attacking and killing civilians in blatant disregard of international humanitarian law. Both the SAF and RSF have attacked humanitarian and medical aid, while the country’s health system, already fragile before the conflict started, is struggling to cope with the medical needs under overwhelming pressure. A massive scale-up of aid is crucial but has failed to materialize. Here's what to know:

It’s led to the world’s largest displacement crisis.

The war in Sudan has forced 14 million people to flee their homes since it started in April 2023, including more than 9 million internally displaced and 4.5 million who have fled to other countries. In Darfur, displaced families have been sheltering in abandoned buildings like schools and orphanages, while those across the border in eastern Chad live in sprawling desert camps where water and other basic needs are scarce.

Sudan's health system has collapsed.

Sudan’s health system is operating under extreme strain, bearing the weight of more than three years of war and its medical consequences. Shortages of essential medicines, staff, and medical equipment are compromising the quality of care and limiting the ability of health care facilities to respond to growing needs. But for many communities, even primary health services are becoming increasingly difficult to access, let alone specialized care.

Attacks on health care have only compounded the challenges communities face in accessing medical services. Since the war started on April 15, 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) has verified 217 attacks on health care in Sudan, leaving 2,052 health workers and patients dead and 810 injured. When care cannot be delivered safely or impartially, civilians lose access to essential medical services and the health system is further weakened. That’s why protecting health workers and facilities is essential for any meaningful access to care.

Sexual violence has become widespread.

Sexual violence has become a defining feature of this conflict. Survivor testimonies and MSF medical data indicate widespread, systematic attacks primarily affecting women and girls, who then face significant barriers to care, including stigma and limited protection services. Impunity, displacement, collapsing community support systems, lack of access to health care, and gender inequalities are allowing these abuses to continue across the country.

MSF responds to the needs of survivors and has worked to improve access to care by reinforcing referral pathways through four community-based centers in displacement camps.

Humanitarian funding cuts are causing visible harm.

Our teams in Sudan are witnessing the immediate impacts of international humanitarian funding cuts, including the disruption of national vaccination programs, water provision, sexual and reproductive health services, and mental health programs, as well as shortages of food and nutritional supplements. Hospitals are closing, with threats of further shutdowns, and an increasing number of patients are struggling to access care as the remaining facilities become increasingly overburdened.

MSF urges the donor community to increase their support and funding for Sudan to sustain a humanitarian response.

This followed an assessment conducted in late 2025, which identified huge health and humanitarian needs. We are currently assessing health needs in the community and water, sanitation, and hygiene needs in the main hospitals and in displacement camps.

In South Kordofan, MSF has launched an emergency intervention based in Abu Jubeiha in response to waves of displaced people moving through the town. MSF is currently the only organization with the operational capacity to mount a large-scale epidemic response in the area.

South Darfur

In South Darfur state, very few international organizations are present and access to health care is severely constrained. MSF supports Nyala Teaching Hospital with pediatric emergency and inpatient care, neonatology, and inpatient malnutrition treatment for severely malnourished children with complications. We also provide primary health care, nutritional support, care for survivors of sexual violence, sexual and reproductive health care, and other community-based services in and around Nyala, including areas hosting many displaced people. In Kas and South Jebel Marra, MSF supports hospital and primary health care services, including emergency care, pediatric and maternal care, nutritional support, care for survivors of sexual violence, and sexual and reproductive health care, as well as outreach activities in remote communities. MSF has played a significant role in revitalizing water systems in South Darfur by repairing infrastructure, including water networks that were heavily damaged during active fighting and community-based hand pumps.

At the same time, bureaucratic restrictions and administrative barriers hinder the ability of humanitarian organizations like MSF to reach people in need.

Food insecurity and malnutrition: Over the course of the war, food insecurity and malnutrition have reached catastrophic levels in parts of Sudan, such as Zamzam camp in North Darfur, once the largest displacement site in the country. Acute malnutrition is on the rise, compounding the risk of death from otherwise treatable illnesses. Between January and July 2026, MSF teams admitted 13,209 patients to inpatient and outpatient therapeutic feeding programs across Sudan.

Disease outbreaks: MSF has witnessed recurrent outbreaks of deadly, yet preventable, diseases across Sudan, including measles in Darfur, hepatitis E in Jazeera, and cholera in Khartoum and White Nile states. These surges are claiming the lives of the most vulnerable, especially children and pregnant women. The lack of availability and access to vaccinations has left many children unvaccinated, heightening the risks. In 2025, we treated 9,520 patients for measles and 40,800 for cholera.

Surgery and emergency care: The war has put intense pressure on hospitals with surgery and emergency departments as patients arrive with catastrophic injuries caused by explosions, bullets, and stabbings. In recent months, MSF has observed the extensive use of drones by both RSF and SAF, with strikes increasingly occurring far beyond front lines and targeting logistical infrastructure and populated civilian areas.

Maternal and pediatric care: Due to the scarcity of functional health care facilities, pregnant women in Sudan often seek care only after experiencing complications, which creates great risks for women and their newborns. And with the loss of livelihoods and disrupted access to food and clean water, many pregnant women arrive at hospitals malnourished. This also affects the health of their babies, who are often born preterm and malnourished as a result. These babies are frequently admitted to observation units to ensure their survival and well-being. In 2025, MSF assisted 34,400 births in Sudan. So far in 2026, we have assisted 14,838 deliveries.

Many arrive in fragile condition after undertaking the long and dangerous journey from Sudan’s Darfur region and require immediate assistance. More than 80 percent of those fleeing to Chad are women and children.

In border areas like Adré, what were initially intended as temporary reception sites have evolved into large, long-term settlements where thousands of people are living in precarious conditions and rely on humanitarian support. Many of the places refugees are living in Chad already had limited access to essential services, and the arrival of large numbers of refugees has only compounded the pressure. In Metché camp in eastern Chad, where MSF and Action Contre la Faim are the only health care providers, only 8 liters (slightly more than 2 gallons) of water are available per person daily — well below the 20-liter (5.3 gallons) emergency minimum. This has forced families to drink directly from unsafe water sources. Consequently, the number of patients with diarrhea surged from 634 in the first half of 2025 to 1,044 in 2026.

MSF teams work in camps across eastern Chad, including Adré, Metché, and Aboutengue, helping to fill critical gaps in health care and access to water and sanitation. We provide medical services including vaccination, trauma care, malnutrition treatment, maternal care, and treatment for diseases like malaria and cholera. We also support water and sanitation by drilling boreholes, constructing latrines, and distributing clean water.
