]]> For those of us living north of the equator, it’s nice to know that it’s spring somewhere in the world. And if you were one of the thousands that tuned in faithfully to the Iowa Bald Eagle nest this past spring, you may be ready for a new nest-cam fix.

You’re in luck! Spring started September 1 in South Africa — and a beautiful spotted eagle owl decided to start a family in a potted plant on a couple’s balcony in Johannesburg. Mother’s name = Potted Plant Owl or PPO. Pop the popcorn! (Sorry about the ad. I promise it’s worth it!)

Facts About the Spotted Eagle Owl:

  • Range: Lives in Africa, south of the equator, and in some parts of the Arabian peninsula.
  • Wingspan: 39-55 inches
  • Call: Hear what a spotted eagle owl sounds like.
  • Relatives: This owl is related to the Great Horned Owl of North America
  • Breeding: They mate for life!
