]]>Are you going through perimenopause or menopause and noticing changes in your skin? You are definitely not the only one, been there and done that! Many women notice during this phase that their skin starts reacting differently than it used to. Products that always worked suddenly seem less effective, or your skin may feel drier, more sensitive or look a bit dull.
During perimenopause and menopause so much changes in your body. Hormones play a much bigger role than most of us realize, and the result of that shows up in your skin as well. Research shows that three hormones in particular play an important role.
Progesterone
Supports estrogen and helps keep the skin supple and hydrated.
Estrogen
Stimulates collagen production and helps maintain skin thickness and firmness.
Testosterone
Regulates sebum production and supports skin elasticity.
When these hormones start fluctuating during perimenopause and menopause, your skin changes too. Sometimes these changes are subtle, sometimes they can feel a little frustrating. Knowing that this is a normal process already helps a lot.
Besides other changes happening in the body, such as hot flashes, night sweats, weight fluctuations or mood swings, your skin also changes.
You might notice that your skin:
becomes drier
shows more fine lines or wrinkles
feels thinner or slightly crepey
develops darker circles under the eyes
gets age spots or melasma
looks duller
becomes more sensitive to products
or even starts breaking out again (I personally had quite a lot of this on my chin)
It can be confusing, like everything is during (peri)menaupause (well that’s how it certainly felt for me), because I had a skincare routine that worked well and I wasn’t eating any differently than before. In fact, I was eating and drinking healthier than ever.
Knowledge helps tremendously, and since I was already mentoring women to lead a more holistic lifestyle I easily put 1 and 1 together. When you understand why your skin is changing and what it needs in this phase, it becomes much easier to make good choices. Usually it’s not about using more products, but about giving your skin the right support during this stage. When you know which ingredients or products suit your skin type and your current skin condition, you gain more control over how your skin looks and feels.
If you are curious which ingredients and products can actually support your skin during this phase, I will walk you through what helped me and many of my clients. And if you want to explore these products I, you can find them through my Olive Tree People shop.
The beauty world is full of products, literally thousands of them. But many contain fillers, synthetic additives or ingredients that do very little for the actual health of your skin. That is why I have always been a supporter of clean beauty, ingredients that support the skin rather than burden it.
During menopause, when skin often becomes more sensitive and the skin barrier may become thinner, choosing nourishing and protective ingredients can make a big difference. Something most of us probably never thought about before.
I discovered waterless skincare In the summer of 2024, a fascinating concept within the clean beauty industry. I had never really thought about how many traditional skincare products consist largely of water. Water itself is not bad, but I’ve learned it often dilutes the concentration of active ingredients. In waterless skincare, water is replaced with bioactive plant extracts. With Olive Tree People, for example, this is an olive leaf extract rich in hydroxytyrosol.
This means the formulas are often more concentrated and each drop contains active ingredients instead of fillers. I started trying a few products and quickly noticed that my skin responded very well to the more concentrated formulas. That is why I now share these products.
As your skin ages and goes through hormonal changes, it can be helpful to choose ingredients that support hydration, protection and repair.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is known for its ability to retain moisture in the skin. It helps the skin feel more hydrated and plump and can contribute to a smoother skin texture.
Collagen
Collagen is an important protein that supports the structure of the skin. As we age, natural collagen production decreases, which can contribute to wrinkles and reduced firmness.
And the magic ingredient that Oliveda offers:
Hydroxytyrosol
Hydroxytyrosol is a powerful polyphenol derived from olive leaves and is known for its strong antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect the skin against oxidative stress, a process that contributes to skin aging.
Menopause does not mean your skin is “going downhill”, it simply means it is changing. With the right care and ingredients, you can continue supporting your skin so it stays healthy, comfortable and radiant.
By choosing ingredients that nourish, protect and hydrate the skin, you help your skin adapt to this new phase. That is exactly what I did, and honestly my skin has never looked better.
Of course every skin is different, but over time I learned that certain products consistently work well for mature or menopausal skin. Below you will find some examples of products that many women, including myself, enjoy using for specific skin concerns. If you ever feel unsure about what might suit your skin best, feel free to reach out or take the skin quiz at the end of this article.
Hormonal changes can reduce the skin’s ability to retain moisture. As a result, the skin may feel tight or look dull. Products that can support the skin in this situation include:
F78 Arbequina Cleansing Oil – a gentle cleanser that does not dry out the skin
F63 Cell Active Oil Serum – a nourishing serum for extra support
F74 Regeneration Intense Face Cream – a rich cream that helps maintain hydration
Internal support can also play a role, for example:
I01 ORAC & Camu Camu
I70 The Beauty Molecule
Wrinkles are a natural part of aging, but you can still support the skin so it remains soft and resilient. Products often used for this include:
F72 Corrective Cleansing Oil
F67 Corrective Facial Tonic
F59 Corrective Face Serum
F65 Corrective Midnight Elixir
F60 Corrective Eye Cream
F42 Corrective Face Cream
These products contain hydroxytyrosol and other bioactive ingredients that help support the skin’s protection and regeneration.
Age spots and hyperpigmentation become more common as we get older and can also be influenced by hormonal changes. Products that can help the skin appear brighter include:
F81 AHA + HT Serum
F83 HT + Vitamin C Serum
F87 Kahai Corrective Elixir
Dark circles can be caused by hormones, lack of sleep or thinner skin around the eyes. Products specifically designed for the eye area include:
F64 Corrective Eye Elixir
F60 Corrective Eye Cream
F09 Anti Wrinkle Eye Cream
LA DOPE 007 Lifting Up Eye Elixir
LA DOPE 008 Shining Dope Eye Cream
Dull skin can be caused by slower cell turnover or reduced circulation. Supporting products can include:
I01 ORAC & Camu Camu
I70 The Beauty Molecule
F78 Arbequina Cleansing Oil
As unfair as it sounds, breakouts can still happen during menopause, products that may help include:
F38 Purifying Cleansing Gel
F11 Activating Face Toner
F81 AHA + HT Serum
F85 Acne SOS Face Drops
F84 Blemish Control Face Mask
When the skin barrier becomes weaker, the skin may become more sensitive. Products often used to soothe the skin include:
F08 Cell Active Cream
B14 SOS Olive Leaf Skin Gel
F82 Green Retinol Face Elixir
Some of my favorite Oliveda products and current facial routine include:
Internals; I01 ORAC & Camu Camu, I70 The Beauty Molecule, I66 The Beauty Fountain
Eyes; F64 Corrective Eye Elixir, F60 Corrective Eye Cream
Cleansing; F72 Corrective Cleansing Oil / F71 Corrective Cleansing Gel / F91 Corrective Cleansing Balm*
Moisturising; F67 Corrective Facial Tonic
F42 Corrective Face Cream (during the day since it contains a natural spf)
F74 Regeneration Intense Face Cream (at night)
Serums; F59 Corrective Face Serum, F86 Corrective Vegan Hyaluronic Serum
Elixers; F65 Corrective Midnight Elixir, F87 Kahai Elixer
Extra’s; F76 Honey Enzyme Mask
*I alternate these but the F91 balm is my absolute favorite
Every skin is different. That is why it can sometimes be difficult to determine which products are best for your skin at this moment. You can take my skin quiz to discover which products best match your skin type and current skin needs. Or you can explore and learn more about the products mentioned in this article through my Olive Tree People shop here.

Tim became part of our family in May 28th 2013
At a time when we thought he needed us. However in reality, it was us who needed him…

He was an aid dog that was no longer suitable for his work due to some behavior issues (insecurity and anxiety when shops were too busy) but he suitable as a family dog and perfect for our family!

Ed was unemployed so Tim gave him a reason to get out there and when he went back to work and I started working from home he ensured I took a break in between working.

It took Ed 3 months to get him to trust him enough to play in the water but he would never swim so we had to make sure not to throw a ball too far or we would have to collect it ourself or hope another dog would do it.

He was hopeless at finding balls in high grass and there have been search parties for a certain expensive ball …

He peed like a puppy and sometimes tried it like a grownup dog, but would almost fall over and could never hit a tree or marker. He loved rolling in the grass, come rain or shine….

When we left the room and came back you’d think we were gone for days, that’s how he would great us.

It was amazing how he could turn a frown into a smile whenever you took him for a walk!

Taught us patience when he was insecure and our boys to care for someone other than themselves when we were travelling which they did better than when we were home.

He gave us all a reason to venture out in fall and winter which we really needed because once baseball season ended we didn’t go out enough.

A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself.
Thank you Tim for loving us, for helping us through difficult times. It was our privilege to become your forever home.

RIP

If we've recently started following my blog you might not know I'm all about making things, selfcare, sharing a different lifestyle and personal growth. During this C-lockdown I've been focussing on implementing those more in my own life. Rather than just sharing "how to" with others. Now was the perfect time to do this, get back to journaling and transition back to blogging here. The preparation and focussing on my transformational growth is a process. It taking some time to create new habits and harmony in a schedule. It has been said it takes 20 days to form a new habit, I think it has more to do with commitment. What have you finally taken steps towards during the lockdown?

My explant was performed by Dr. Frank Niessen he operates in Operatiecentrum Amstelveen. He has a great team, very sweet, caring and I practically had a private nurse sas there were only 2 other ladies after me. Whilst prepping they kept me very relaxed, even when it was super hard to find my vain. I was slapped on the hand one too many! The other anesthesiologist had to distracted me and hold my other hand to soothe me.
I meditated and listen to as much relaxing mantra’s as I could right before surgery and I came out like I was having a really nice nap with a nice dream. I was allowed to home the same day but they made sure I drank, ate (i brought some bananas), had a bathroom break and another nap. After that its all a cycle of (assisted obviously) bathroom breaks, feeding and outfit changes. Big thank you’s to the hubs and my mom for the 24/7 care even when it’s 5 am ….
The pain was not at all what I expected in a positive way mind you.
My lipo areas felt like i did an Ab Bootcamp from hell and my incisions had a burning sensation but I was never in any real pain. As for meds apparently i should have taken aspirin the morning of my surgery. Since we don’t use aspirine, they added it to my IV.
They gave me 3 prescriptions which my husband went to get just in case things would be bad over the weekend. But I never used them because the pain was not that bad and what I did have I could relieve with essential oils, just like normal discomfort.
Details: I explanted 240 cc mentor textured saline implants.
I had a reconstruction and 130 cc lipofilling (fat from other places, I had plenty to spare). The explant and lipo was the easy part but according to the surgeon, the reconstruction was the tricky part since my tissue was a bit tough. Just like me I guess
So far I’ve had my first checkup which I passed. Although my surgeon was in shock I was so weak. He was happy with the results so far, so am I, even though I am black and blue in all the places.
Fingers crossed my fat likes it’s new location!
So what’s different since I explanted?
– Biggest thing is I could take a deep breath for the first time in months! Without coughing up all kinda nasty gunk. It even happened right before surgery so imagine my surprise when I got out of surgery and I could breathe deeply with ease.
– I got rid of a bit of weight already, my itchy scalp is less.
– My skin is oiling up again (very noticeable in my face)
– No joint pain so far
– Mentally I’m feeling happier, less depressed
All the rest takes time and that’s fine! My symptoms didn’t pop up from one day till the other… They just krept up on me, slowly in stealth mode over the course of 2,5 years.
Still needing lots of rest & sleep but I went for a tiny walk around the block today to enjoy the sun and i can get out of bed by myself and i shower regularly so all in all #gratefulaf that I can start healing from #breastimplantillness

I used to be someone that did it all.
I sent bday cards, or digitally sent congrats.
I worked out at least 3 x a week.
I worked my business like a boss.
I planned, was structured and stress resistant.
I was a bubbly person.
I was a morning person.
I was young for my age.
I was supportive and positive.
I enjoyed spring.
I was outgoing.
I was all those things that I do not seem to be anymore…. Most days are PJ days.
Most days are days filled with tears.
Most days I feel like an old lady with my aching joints.
Most days I want to stay in bed, which I do half of the day.
Most days I don’t work at all.
Most days a walk into town is like I ran half a marathon.
Most days I see only fall.
Most days I think people are stupid and whiners, like me …. But this is not me, this is not who I want to be and this is not who I am going to stay!
In 7 days I will be explanting my toxic boobs, will get a reconstruction and start to heal. Start to find my way back and become the me I was, but 2.0 as I have plans to get not only my body back on track but my mind as well.
I am taking even more charge of my health and I will start detoxing my body, mind and soul before I am 50 because we all know that’s when life really starts
Nobody could figure it out, so I did it myself because friends and friends of friends shared their journey. So I am paying it forward by sharing my journey and not just my picture perfect social media life.

What women do when they feel something is off, with their minds, their body, their life.
They blame it on stress, or previous stress, on hormones, on their busy lives on everything other than what it could be. Especially if you doctor can’t find an explanation in your bloodwork and you seem perfectly healthy. But we never think it could be because of our breast implants, even the doctors don’t seen to think of that. Why would they everyone claims they are safe right?
Well newsflash, they are lying! If you have breast implants please research them and if you are suffering from unexplainable issues, do yourself a favor and think about explanting.
Not everyone that gets implants feels off right away, heck it didn’t happen till my second set and crazy enough I wasn’t planning getting them. But the plastic surgeon convinced me it was my best option to feeling normal and that they were perfectly safe. Yeah right….. 2,5 years these perfectly safe saline breast implants turned out to be Mentor implants, textured and not as safe as they are supposed to be. So this month I am getting an explant, a reconstruction so I can heal my body from the vast amount of symptoms that I thought were simply there because of my season in my life.

I am not a certified health coach, I am not a certified AFT, EFT practicioner, I am not a homeopath, I am not a certified personal coach, I am not …
Yet I bring enough to the table
What I am is a mom of teenagers, a wife to an amazing guy, a daughter of a strong woman and a friend to whomever is in need. With what I have learned I educate those around me and those seeking my advice. I mentor those who wish to grow a business like I have, they may not come from a situation of financial stress, from unemployment and great debt to retiring a husband and supporting a family. By by sharing how I have left that behind me I show them anything is possible.
So no I may not have what society expects a natural health and wellness educator to have, but I teach my friends to educate themselves not just take my advice since I am not a medically trained professional and even if I was I’d still say the same…
Do your own research, get second opinions, take steps and make the changes that you need in you life. For your body, mind, soul and maybe even your career, take control and if you need some help, I’m here for you!

There are different kinds therapies that are used for this and I’ve tried quite a few nei, journaling, soundingbowls, essential oils, meditation, AFT, Access bars consiousness, chunsoo, walk barefoot more in the grass and live more by my humandesign
Some may look or sound very WOOWOO but I have learned to that if I want to dig a little deeper and grow I have to keep an open mind.
Sounding bowls, walking in grass, essential oils for emotions and chunsoo are currently my faves from this list (sometimes combined). I like the way it helps me relax, release, refuel my inner QI and really feel all the emotions. What do you do to connect more with your inner child, voice, feelings?
