Busy parents juggling work and wellness, caregivers carrying everyone else’s needs, and shift workers running on odd hours often notice the same thing: life looks fine on paper, but the mood feels off. The hard part is that everyday mental wellness doesn’t usually collapse all at once, it frays in small moments, and finding emotional health support can feel like one more task to manage. That’s where unique mental health strategies come in, especially for general readers who want realistic options that fit normal days and build steady mental health engagement. This is a simple, doable way to reconnect with what “well-being” actually means day to day.

Understanding Emotional Wellness Basics

It helps to name what’s going on. Emotional wellness is about understanding and managing emotions, keeping a steadier outlook, and bouncing back when stress hits. It’s less about feeling great all the time and more about staying responsive, not stuck.

This matters because chasing one “perfect” habit can turn into another way to fail. When 44% of U.S. employees feel burned out, a mix of small supports often works better than a single big fix. Variety gives you options on the hard days.

Think of it like a basic toolkit. Some days you need a five minute reset, other days a walk, a friend text, or an earlier bedtime. The point is having more than one lever to pull. That same structure and momentum can come from returning to school in a flexible way.

Use Learning as an Anchor: Build Confidence Through School

When your emotions feel wobbly, having something steady to move toward can make day-to-day life feel a lot more manageable. Going back to school to support your career can be that anchor, something with built-in structure, clear progress, and the kind of momentum that boosts your confidence when everything else feels like it’s pulling in different directions.

If healthcare is calling, working toward a degree can also tap into a deeper sense of purpose: you’re building skills that help you make a positive impact on the health of individuals and families, which can be grounding in itself. And you don’t have to press pause on the rest of your life to do it, earning an online degree can give you the flexibility to keep balancing work, family, and whatever else is on your plate while you move forward. When you’re ready to explore what that could look like, you can get the details you need about flexible healthcare degree options.

Pick One Today: 9 Quirky, Real-World Ways to Feel Better

When life feels noisy, I do better with “one small weird thing” than a whole wellness overhaul. Here are nine options you can try today, think of them like mini electives for your brain, the same way a good class schedule gives your week some structure.1. Do a 10-minute “messy page” brain dump: Set a timer and write the most unfiltered, chaotic version of what’s on your mind, no grammar, no solutions. Then underline one sentence that feels most true and turn it into a tiny action: send the email, refill the meds, ask for help. It works because it turns vague stress into something you can actually hold.2. Try a “two-sense reset” snack: Pick one drink and one texture (tea + crunchy crackers, fruit + yogurt, etc.). For five minutes, only focus on two senses, taste and touch, or smell and sound, like you’re doing a lab observation. This kind of micro-mindfulness is a mind-body practice for wellness that can settle a racing brain fast.3. Make a tiny “learning plan” for your feelings: Borrow the school trick: choose a theme for the week (sleep, patience, confidence) and track it like a simple course. Give yourself three checkboxes a day, example: “outside for 5 minutes,” “text one friend,” “stretch after work.” The structure is the point; you’re building momentum, not perfection.4. Go on a “forest immersion” walk with one rule: Walk slowly in a park or trail and commit to noticing five specific things, two colors, one sound, one texture, one smell. Forest immersion therapy doesn’t require a retreat; it’s basically giving your nervous system a nature-heavy input. The Cleveland Clinic summary of a 2010 study describes higher levels of immune cells after repeated forest walks, which is a nice reminder that your mind and body really are on the same team.5. Borrow animal-assisted comfort (even if you don’t own a pet): If you can, ask a friend to walk their dog with you, or volunteer for a shift where animals are around. Animal-assisted therapy benefits often show up as “I can breathe again” moments, steady companionship, gentle routine, and an easy reason to get outside. If live animals aren’t accessible, even watching fish at a store or listening to cat purr audio can be a decent substitute.6. Use artistic expression for healing with a “bad art” rule: Make a playlist and do 15 minutes of scribble-drawing, collage from junk mail, or painting shapes with a cheap brush. You’re not trying to create; you’re trying to externalize. If emotions feel stuck in your body, art gives them a non-verbal exit.7. Do a 3-minute wall sit + sigh combo: Set a timer: 30–60 seconds of wall sit, then stand and take five slow “physiological sighs” (double inhale, long exhale). Repeat twice. This is a quick mind-body practice that tells your system, “We’re safe enough to downshift,” especially when you’re spiraling.8. Volunteer in the smallest possible way: Pick something so small it’s almost silly: 20 minutes packing supplies, writing two cards, pulling weeds at a community garden, or helping a neighbor carry groceries. The volunteering impact on mood is real for many people because it adds purpose and connection, two things stress loves to steal. Bonus: it also widens your “community support network” without a big social commitment.9. Create a “low-stakes courage script” for awkward moments: Write two sentences you can reuse when you feel weird starting something new: “I’m trying this as an experiment, mind if I join?” or “I’m new at this, so I’m keeping it simple today.” Keep it in your notes and use it at a class, a walking group, a volunteer shift, or even a study session. Having words ready lowers the friction so you actually show up.

Everyday Mental Wellness: Quick Q&A

Q: What if these ideas feel silly or like they won’t actually help?
A: “Silly” is often a sign it’s low-pressure, not low-value. Treat it like a two-day experiment and look for tiny signals, like unclenched shoulders or fewer doom-scroll minutes. If it helps 5%, that’s still a real win.

Q: How much time do I need for this to make a difference?
A: Start with 3 to 10 minutes, and keep the bar embarrassingly low. Consistency beats intensity here, so pick a time you already have, like right after brushing your teeth. If you miss a day, you did not fail, you just paused.

Q: Can I do these safely if I’m dealing with anxiety, trauma, or panic?
A: Yes, but go gentle and choose options that feel grounding, not activating. The idea behind mind-body healing is that your body can carry stress signals, so downshifting your nervous system can be supportive. If anything spikes symptoms, stop, switch to something soothing, and consider professional support.

Q: Do I have to spend money to try “unconventional” mental wellness?
A: Nope. A notebook page, a glass of water, a short walk, or a free volunteer shift counts. If you want to buy something, make it optional and cheap, like a $2 pen you enjoy using.

Q: When should I skip DIY wellness and talk to someone instead?
A: If you’re having thoughts of self-harm, can’t function day-to-day, or symptoms are escalating, reach out for help right away. You’re not the only one going through it, and 58.9 million Americans have experienced mental illness, so support is normal, not dramatic. You can use small practices alongside therapy or medication, not as a replacement.

Turning Tiny Experiments Into Ongoing Mental Wellness Momentum

When life gets loud, mental wellness can start feeling like one more job on the to-do list, and that’s when we usually drop it. The way through is a lighter mindset: keep experimenting with positive emotional habits, stay curious, and lean on community mental health support instead of trying to “fix” everything alone. Over time, that approach builds real mental health empowerment, more steady days, quicker resets, and more inspiration for self-care that actually fits normal life. Small emotional habits, repeated often, build the strongest kind of calm.

Origami Box Tutorial http://aliciahanson.com/origami-box-tutorial/ Tue, 30 Jul 2019 19:55:53 +0000 http://aliciahanson.com/?p=1266
This is my favorite go to easy box when I need one for something small fast.  Follow the video steps below.

You will need 2 pieces of paper.  I recommend card stock. You will cut the card stock to squares that are 8″ & the other piece to 8-1/2″.  You can make any size box. You will just need to size the paper up accordingly.

IMG_4331

You will cut the card stock to squares that are 8″ and the other piece to 8-1/2″.

Then Fold the paper in half both ways.

Then fold each corner into the center.

Fold all four corners into the center.

Then Fold the side up to the center, do both sides this way.

Then Unfold and start forming your box.

Fold the sides in and then the ends up

Then you will fold the end up and over creating a sort of lock. You can put tape or glue here if you want to.

Then do the same to the other end of the box.

Complete the steps again for the other piece of the box. Or use the box as a lil dish.

The pieces fit nicely together

You can decorate the box.

Does Natural Weed Killer Work? http://aliciahanson.com/does-natural-weed-killer-work/ Tue, 30 Jul 2019 01:37:59 +0000 http://aliciahanson.com/?p=1253
I have been wondering if natural weed killer works.  I really don’t want to use any products with glyphosate.  It has been linked to so many bad things happening in the environment.  So I thought let’s do a test. Try out the natural stuff see if works.
Recently we relandscaped our front yard area that is in our large circle drive.  We live in Southern California in the coastal city of Oceanside.  I would describe our climate as fairly dry and but coastal and moderate.   When we relandscaped our circle drive. We dug out the existing dead grass and a few other plants that were not really looking very good.  Then we laid down weed cloth. Then over the weed cloth, we unloaded several loads of gravel.  The gravel was also donated by a friend of our landlord so that was wonderful. Then once we got the gravel spread out we went back and added plants.  I put out a notice on Nextdoor asking if anyone had any large Foxtail agaves I could have for free and low and behold one of my neighbors had a bunch.  So we picked them up and profusely Thanked my good-hearted neighbor and proceeded with planting the agaves.  We made holes in the weed cloth and dug out enough soil and then inserted the foxtail agaves. It was pretty easy and cleaned up the space from looking rundown to having some curb appeal.

I don’t seem to have a before photo but here is a pic with the weed cloth installed.IMG_8566

Here is a during the process photo.

Well after having hauled and heaved 3 truckloads of gravel on this frontyard and then to see weed springing up let’s just say I was disappointed in my weed cloth.  So upon the discovery of weeds, we decided we need an easy way to spray them and get rid of them. So hence the need to try the natural weed spray as mentioned above. So here are some photos of the invading weeds.

IMG_1286

IMG_4173

I purchased a sprayer from Harbor Freight. And I went ahead and just wrote the recipe right on to my sprayer.

IMG_6763

Here is the recipe I used

Although I didn’t have Dawn I used Ajax Grapefruit Dishsoap because that’s what I had under the sink.  And I also used lavender-scented Epsom Salt, again that’s what I had. I bought my 1 gallon bottle of vinegar at Costco.
Here are my results after one day of spraying them.

IMG_6605

The center root has died just some long tendrils were still green.  They did die off after a few more days.

IMG_7099

These were dandelions. They to after one day were shriveled and dead. Now I need to go to work pulling all the dead weeds. So in this instance, I have shown here in Southern California in these conditions the Natural Weed Killer works well.  I will use it again.

The World of Bunko and Creating Community http://aliciahanson.com/the-world-of-bunko-and-creating-community/ Fri, 28 Jun 2019 21:13:35 +0000 http://aliciahanson.com/?p=1227
Summer has kicked in full force over here and I thought it would be a good time to have a Bunko Reunion.  About 14 years we were living up in South Orange County, in the San Clemente Trestles Community. At the time I was home with my brand new baby girl Ginger.  I met some of the neighbor girls and they were starting a neighborhood Bunko group.  Not knowing what Bunko was I had to get an explanation which went something like this.  We get a group of women together, you put in $10 dollars towards the game

The host provides apps and drinks and a few of the players walk away with winnings. We all have a good time visiting and each month a different person hosts. For being a stay at home Mom fairly new to the area, it sounded awesome. It was some much-needed adult interaction. Our group got together for about 6-7 years on a monthly basis. Let me tell you having those women to relate to and talk parenting and adulting was a godsend. These girls supported our jewelry business over the years as well. Our Bunko nights turned into themed events with costumes and often included Holiday bunko with spouses so we could meet everyone’s other halves. We also branched off into Halloween Parties and Birthday parties.  Many of these women became my closest friends.

Recently Paperless Post hit me up to try out their product and I thought it sounded like a great opportunity to get the Bunko group back together. Let’s do this.

So Paperless Post is an online invitation web site.  You purchase coins or credits and then you can set up an event. You start with creating an online invitation and input your guest’s emails. The site tracks RSVPs and your guest’s questions. There is also a message board where you can post photos as well as set up reminder emails, so your guests don’t forget!

Paperless2 Here is an example of my invite.  Paperless Posts offers cool on-trend templates like this one.

Murals in your home http://aliciahanson.com/murals-in-your-home/ Thu, 20 Jun 2019 19:38:34 +0000 http://aliciahanson.com/?p=1187
So years ago I had come across this image on Pinterest for a Chinoiserie Mural.  The designer had painted it on her wall.  The design is based on a wallpaper & fabric design by Schumacher Chiang Mai. I have seen the design around on various sites and admired it.  And after seeing the cost of the wallpaper a square ft. I thought I want to create a similar mural someday. Chiang-Mai-Mural-gorgeousshinythings

Here is an example of the Schumacher Chiang Mai Wallpaper

So when we moved back to Oceanside, California from Hawaii, I thought this would be a good time.  My husband Brad was waiting on the arrival of our shipping container from Hawaii, so we thought the perfect time to take on a mural.  Brad loosely sketched the design on the wall freehand and then we went to work painting the design with various acrylic paints

The progression is from complete to start below, we painted the wall a nice blue that matched our retro stove.

So our design is based on our loose interpretation of Schumacher’s Chiang Mai Print. I just love this fabric.  It is a fabulous designer fabric textile and makes a great mural too.   If you’re interested in purchasing the fabric it can be purchased here at Decorator’s Best.

Boho Bedding http://aliciahanson.com/boho-bedding/ Thu, 18 Apr 2019 16:58:30 +0000 http://aliciahanson.com/?p=1169
I have a love of textiles. I absolutely love fabric and pattern design. Pattern, design, and color are usually what draws my eye to something I see and adore.  I have been playing with different types of pattern design and my own creative creations.  I just love embroidery and these patterns are some that caught my eye that I thought would be cool in another format

So I reworked them into larger scale designs and bedding.  They are for sale up on my SilverBotanica.com site as well.

Here are some of the designs. I think they would look really good say in your Bali Vacation Rental.  Maybe on a cool hand carved teak bed.

How can we make Trump’s Wall a good thing for America http://aliciahanson.com/how-can-we-make-trumps-wall-a-good-thing-for-america/ Thu, 10 Nov 2016 18:38:56 +0000 http://aliciahanson.com/?p=1125

So last night I was thinking about this post I saw on FB by Don Freeman:

And then I got to thinking “What are some of the ideas that Trump has that people object too”, and how could we create something that could be a win vs bad. And how could we get more people behind the idea and make it a great idea.  So my wheels starting turning and briefly a photo I saw somewhere went through my head of a pink wall described as what Trump’s wall might look like.

donald-trump-mexico-border-wall-pink-730115

And I thought no that’s lame.  What if this wall, could have all sorts of “GOOD” packed into and people would want it built.

What if the wall was large,

sort of imagine The Great Wall of China.

great-wallofchina

But a modern version of it.

solartunnel

And What if the wall was built from “good things” liked recycled plastic that they pulled out of the ocean like this product below by ByFusion from New Zealand.

plastic-brick

replast-wall

Here is a video on the product.

And what if the top of the wall has a Solar Road way on the surface, like this idea by Solar Roadways:

solarroad3

Where the surface of the road looked like this.

solarroad2

Or this, heck Solar Roads already has a contract with US DOT in place.

solar-road

And what if this solar road on Trump’s wall did things like this:

solarroad1

And in areas where bridges are needed what if the wall looked something like this:

wind-bridge

And generated wind energy.

wind-bridge2

We could take this wall even further, what if the sides of the recycled plastic bricks are clad in Tesla’s Solar Roof Tiles like this:

tesla-tile

How much energy do you think this wall could generate?  Maybe it would be 100% LEED Certified?

tesla-powerwall

And last but not least what if this wall had two more components, such as providing low income housing or housing for homeless within the wall, maybe something like this:

housing

And last but not least what if we built Trump’s wall by putting all the unemployed millennials that love tech and can’t find jobs, to work creating this wall of the future that maybe we should rename Trump’s Smartwall.

millenial1

Put America back to work.

millenial2

And so in closing, I side with Senator Elizabeth Warren, “Let’s put aside our differences and work with Trump on this task.”

And let’s build things that we can all get behind and create a lot of good..
