Coral reefs around the world experienced the fourth mass coral bleaching event from 2023 to 2025, impacting the health of one of the ocean’s most valuable and colorful ecosystems. Recent findings from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) show how corals were affected.

In light of Coral Bleaching Awareness Month, a global movement led by the Coral Reef Alliance that includes hundreds of individuals and organizations, we are sharing our top takeaways from NOAA’s findings and looking at what mass bleaching events could mean for the future of coral reefs.

Heat Stress Impacted 84% of Coral Reef Area 

Mass bleaching events are linked to severe or prolonged heat stress from natural climate patterns and more frequent and severe marine heat waves driven by climate change. According to NOAA, bleaching-level heat stress from the fourth mass bleaching event was found to have impacted 84% of the world’s coral reef area. 

Corals bleach when they are stressed, expelling symbiotic photosynthetic algae, called zooxanthellae, from their tissues and revealing a white calcium carbonate skeleton underneath. Not only do zooxanthellae give corals their bright colors, but they also act as their main source of nutrients. Without them, corals are left vulnerable to disease unless stress is reduced and the zooxanthellae return.

Healthier Coral Reefs Are More Likely to Survive Bleaching

Even though 84% of the world’s coral reef area experienced bleaching-level heat stress, not all of these reefs experienced coral bleaching. This suggests that some coral reefs may be more resistant than others.

Scientists are studying this to learn why some reefs bleached and others did not, and whether biological factors, environmental factors, or a combination of both played a role. 

Even though we don’t have those answers yet, decades of scientific research show that healthy coral reefs are more likely to recover from stress. It works the same as a healthy person being better able to recover after a cold.

At the Coral Reef Alliance, we work with partners around the world to reduce local stressors and to develop diverse climate-resilient reef networks. This dual approach gives coral reefs a better chance to adapt and survive as the world gets warmer.

Coral Bleaching May Happen More Often. Reducing Stressors Can Help Corals Adapt to Climate Change. 

Climate change will continue to increase ocean temperatures, and NOAA’s recent findings back up what our research shows and what many scientists fear: coral bleaching events could soon become a regular occurrence. In fact, by 2050, 90% of coral reefs are projected to experience coral bleaching annually. 

While lowering CO2 emissions and slowing climate change are critical, we also need to help coral reefs adapt to changing ocean temperatures. That’s why we focus on strategies that advance science, grow partnerships, and support local efforts to reduce environmental stressors and keep coral reefs healthy. 

Ensuring Clean Water

We work with local partners and communities to reduce land-based pollution that enters our oceans. This includes minimizing sediment runoff and sewage pollution, which can smother reefs, increase algae growth, and block the sunlight that corals need to survive. 

In 2025, we treated over 30 million gallons of sewage across Honduras, keeping vital parts of the Mesoamerican Reef healthy.

Creating Well-Managed Protected Areas

Coral reefs also need enough herbivorous fish to graze on seaweed and keep algae growth in check. We work with local groups to monitor fisheries, implement protective regulations and enforcement, and expand Marine Protected Areas. In fact, one of our field sites saw a 70% increase in fish biomass last year after a seasonal fishing ban.

Building Climate-Resilient Reef Networks

We are also working to increase genetic diversity and ecological connectivity in reef networks, allowing coral larvae to spread heat-tolerant traits that help reefs evolve and adapt to warming ocean temperatures. Last year, alongside three partners, we launched a project in the Western Caribbean to identify regional reef networks that protect diversity and promote connectivity.

If you’ve ever searched for ways to help coral reefs, you’ve probably come across the opportunity to “adopt a coral.”

It’s easy to understand the appeal. You can picture the coral you’re helping, follow its story, and feel connected to something happening underwater thousands of miles away.

And coral restoration has an important role to play. Growing and outplanting corals can help rebuild damaged areas, support research, and accelerate recovery in places where coral has been lost.

But here’s another way to think about it: What does that coral need before and after it’s planted?

That’s where the story gets bigger.

A Coral Needs a Healthy Place to Live

A newly planted coral faces many of the same pressures as the reef around it.

Did you know? About 80% of global wastewater enters marine environments untreated, adding a major source of stress to coral reefs already facing warming oceans.

If untreated wastewater is flowing into the ocean, poor water quality can fuel algae growth and increase disease. If a reef has lost too many herbivorous fish, algae can compete with young corals for space. And as ocean temperatures rise, corals need the best possible conditions to survive periods of heat stress.

This doesn’t make restoration less important. It means restoration is one part of a much greater effort.

The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) takes a broad view of coral reef restoration, following NOAA’s definition of restoration as assisting the recovery of reefs that have been degraded, damaged, or destroyed. That can mean supporting direct restoration projects. It can also mean reducing the threats that make it harder for corals to recover in the first place.

Clean Water and Healthy Fish Go Hand in Hand

Giving corals a better chance to recover often means working on the conditions around them.

That starts with clean water. Wastewater, sediment, fertilizers, and other pollutants can make their way from land to the ocean, fueling algae growth and adding stress to already vulnerable corals. In Roatan, Honduras, CORAL’s support for a wastewater treatment plant in West End has helped keep over 30 million gallons of sewage out of nearby reefs each year.

Fish matter, too. Herbivores like parrotfish and surgeonfish graze on algae to keep the reef clear for corals to grow. When too many of these fish are removed, algae can take over and make it much harder for corals to survive.

Protection can sometimes look like patrolling MPAs or policy work. See how Honduras issued a nationwide fishing ban to protect grouper, key marine species, and ultimately coral reefs.

Clean water and healthy fish populations may not look like traditional coral restoration, but both help create something every restored coral needs: a healthy place to grow.

One reef can help another

There’s one more piece of the puzzle… Reefs aren’t isolated.

Ocean currents carry coral larvae between reefs. A healthy reef can send new generations of corals elsewhere, including corals with traits that may make them better able to tolerate warmer conditions.

That means protecting one healthy reef can contribute to recovery beyond its boundaries. 

It’s why CORAL’s conservation strategy increasingly focuses on connected reef networks, rather than treating every reef separately.

So, Should You Adopt a Coral?

If a credible coral adoption or restoration program speaks to you, supporting it can absolutely be worthwhile.

But it’s not the only way to help coral reefs.

You can also support the clean water, healthy fish populations, science, and conservation work that give corals (whether newly planted or thousands of years old) a better chance of survival against climate change.

Most people have a reef on their travel bucket list.

Maybe it’s Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Maybe it’s the crystal-clear waters of French Polynesia or the incredibly biodiverse reefs of the Philippines. Every year, millions of people travel the world hoping to experience one of nature’s greatest wonders.

But here’s the fun part: no two coral reefs are the same.

Some are famous for enormous schools of fish. Others are known for dramatic underwater walls, sea turtles, manta rays, or coral gardens that seem almost impossible in their color and complexity. Each reef tells its own story, shaped by the people who live nearby, the ocean that surrounds it, and thousands of years of growth.

Whether you’re planning your next dive trip or simply dreaming from home, these are some of the most extraordinary coral reefs on Earth (and why they’re worth protecting, of course).

Raja Ampat, Indonesia

If divers had to choose one place that feels like another planet, Raja Ampat would be at the top of the list.

Located in eastern Indonesia, this remote archipelago sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle, the global center of marine biodiversity. More than 1,600 species of reef fish and hundreds of coral species have been recorded here, making it one of the richest marine environments ever studied.

Underwater, every direction offers something different. Soft corals sway in the current. Tiny pygmy seahorses cling to sea fans. Reef sharks patrol the drop-offs while clouds of anthias shimmer above the coral.

What makes Raja Ampat remarkable isn’t just its beauty. It’s what happens when healthy reefs are given the chance to thrive. Local communities, governments, scientists, and conservation organizations have spent years working together to improve reef management, helping many reefs remain among the healthiest in the world.

It’s a reminder that conservation can work.

The Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The Great Barrier Reef hardly needs an introduction.

Stretching more than 1,400 miles along Australia’s northeast coast, it’s the largest coral reef system on Earth and can even be seen from space.

Its sheer size is difficult to imagine until you’re there. Thousands of individual reefs create a connected network filled with coral bommies, giant clams, sea turtles, reef sharks, and more than 1,500 species of fish.

The Great Barrier Reef has also become a symbol of what’s happening to coral reefs around the world. Marine heatwaves have caused widespread bleaching events in recent years, drawing global attention to the challenges reefs face as ocean temperatures rise.

Despite those challenges, the story isn’t over. Reefs respond differently to warming, and many areas continue to recover when local pressures like poor water quality and overfishing are reduced.

Palau

Palau has become something of a model for ocean conservation.

This small Pacific island nation has protected a large portion of its surrounding waters while continuing to welcome visitors from around the world.

Its reefs are famous for dramatic walls, clear water, and encounters with manta rays, reef sharks, and swirling schools of fish. Blue Corner, one of the world’s best-known dive sites, is often described as an underwater highway where ocean currents bring an incredible concentration of marine life.

Palau also reminds visitors that conservation isn’t something that happens in isolation. Healthy reefs depend on clean water, responsible tourism, sustainable fishing, and local leadership. Protecting reefs isn’t just about what happens underwater.

Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize Barrier Reef stretches for nearly 190 miles along the Caribbean coast and is the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere.

Many people know it because of the Great Blue Hole, but the reef itself is the real attraction.

Colorful coral gardens support sea turtles, nurse sharks, rays, and hundreds of fish species. Mangrove forests and seagrass beds nearby provide nursery habitat for young marine life before they move onto the reef.

Belize has also shown that conservation decisions matter. In recent years, stronger protections and efforts to reduce damaging activities have helped improve the reef’s outlook, proving that positive change is possible when science and policy work together.

French Polynesia

Imagine looking down through water so clear that the reef seems close enough to touch.

That’s everyday life in much of French Polynesia.

Spread across a vast area of the Pacific Ocean, these islands are surrounded by reefs that range from calm lagoons to dramatic outer reef slopes. Divers and snorkelers often encounter blacktip reef sharks, eagle rays, sea turtles, and dense coral gardens that seem to stretch forever.

Many visitors leave talking about the color of the water, but they should also leave thinking about the reef beneath it.

The colors, the wildlife, and the clarity of the water are the kind of beauty that stays with you.

Hawaiʻi

Coral reefs around Hawaiʻi are unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Because of the islands’ isolation, many of the fish found here exist nowhere else. Bright yellow tangs, butterflyfish, triggerfish, and other endemic species have evolved over millions of years in these waters.

Hawaiian reefs are deeply connected to local communities and Native Hawaiian culture, providing food, recreation, and cultural significance that extends far beyond tourism.

Like reefs around the world, they also face growing pressure from warming oceans, pollution, invasive species, and coastal development. Across the islands, communities are working to improve water quality, restore fisheries, and protect places that have supported both people and marine life for generations.

The Maldives

From above, the Maldives looks like a scattering of turquoise rings floating in the Indian Ocean.

Those rings are coral atolls and are some of the most recognizable reef formations on Earth.

The reefs here attract whale sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and countless tropical fish. Many resorts have reefs just offshore, allowing visitors to snorkel within minutes of stepping onto the beach.

The Maldives has also become an important place for coral restoration research as scientists and local organizations explore ways to help reefs recover after bleaching events.

Fiji

Known as the “Soft Coral Capital of the World,” Fiji offers an underwater landscape unlike almost anywhere else.

Currents carry nutrients through narrow passages, creating ideal conditions for colorful soft corals that cover reef walls in shades of pink, orange, purple, and red.

The reefs also support healthy populations of reef fish, sharks, turtles, and invertebrates.

For many visitors, Fiji is where they truly understand how much life a healthy reef can hold.

Florida Keys, United States

The only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States lies just offshore of the Florida Keys.

Millions of people visit every year to snorkel, dive, fish, and experience this unique marine environment.

The reef has changed dramatically over the past several decades, affected by disease, bleaching, hurricanes, and declining coral cover. At the same time, restoration projects are growing, with scientists working to grow resilient corals and return them to damaged reefs.

It’s a reminder that restoration has an important role to play, but protecting the conditions reefs need to survive remains just as important.

Every Reef Is Worth Seeing

Lists like this always leave somewhere out.

The Red Sea. The Philippines. New Caledonia. The Solomon Islands. Bonaire.

Every reef has something special.

Some are famous around the world. Others are known only by the people who live beside them. Some are recovering. Others are struggling. All of them matter.

The good news is that coral reefs are remarkably resilient when we reduce the pressures they can actually control. Cleaner water. Sustainable fishing. Strong local management. These actions don’t stop climate change, but they can give reefs a much better chance to recover and adapt.

That’s exactly where CORAL focuses its work. By partnering with communities to improve water quality, strengthen reef management, and apply the latest science, we’re helping reefs become more resilient in a changing world.

The next time you visit a reef, remember that you’re seeing something that took thousands of years to grow. Swim carefully and give wildlife space. Leave everything exactly where you found it.

When people think about threats to coral reefs, they usually imagine coral bleaching or rising ocean temperatures. While climate change remains the greatest long-term challenge, another threat is harming reefs every day, and it often goes unnoticed.

Untreated wastewater.

Around the world, wastewater carries excess nutrients, bacteria, and other pollutants into coastal waters. These pollutants fuel algae growth, spread disease, reduce water quality, and make corals less able to survive the stress of a warming ocean. The encouraging news is that wastewater pollution is one of the threats we already know how to solve.

A Window of Opportunity

Belize is home to the Belize Barrier Reef—part of the largest reef system in the Western Hemisphere and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The reef supports fisheries, tourism, coastal protection, and thousands of livelihoods.

Yet many communities still struggle with inadequate wastewater systems. A 2022 water quality study found elevated nutrient pollution and pathogens across Belize’s reef environment, much of it linked to untreated sewage.

This is a serious threat, and addressing it requires more than choosing a treatment technology. Communities must determine where pollution is coming from, what kind of infrastructure is appropriate, how improvements will be financed, and who will operate and maintain the system over time.

The Pieces Are Coming Together

Wastewater treatment technology isn’t new. What has often been missing is the combination of funding, planning, local support, and coordination needed to move projects from good ideas to real improvements.

In Belize, those pieces are beginning to align.

A US$10.5 million loan has been approved to improve wastewater infrastructure in Caye Caulker, one of Belize’s most visited island communities and a gateway to the Belize Barrier Reef. That investment creates an extraordinary opportunity to reduce pollution before it reaches nearby coral reefs.

But infrastructure alone doesn’t guarantee success.

Building Long-Lasting Solutions

A wastewater treatment system is only one part of the solution. Lasting improvements happen when communities have the science to understand the problem, governments and utilities have a practical plan, financing is in place, systems can be operated and maintained, and residents and businesses can connect to the solution. Without those pieces working together, even well-funded infrastructure may fail to deliver lasting benefits for reefs or communities.

That’s where we focus our work. Rather than simply advocating for new infrastructure, the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) helps communities create the conditions that make wastewater investments successful.

Working alongside Belizean partners since 2017, CORAL has supported water quality research, strengthened cross-sector relationships, and helped gather the information needed to design wastewater solutions that communities can manage for years to come. That includes identifying pollution sources through water quality science, bringing governments, utilities, businesses, and community leaders together around shared priorities, helping secure financing, and supporting the planning and governance needed to sustain improvements over the long term.

Current assessments in Caye Caulker are helping determine the right combination of solutions. That may include upgrading existing infrastructure, expanding treatment capacity, improving household systems, or combining multiple approaches. The right solution will depend on local conditions and the community’s capacity to operate and maintain it over time.

The goal isn’t simply to build infrastructure. It’s to create wastewater solutions and community-led systems that continue protecting reefs long after construction is complete.

Why This Matters Beyond Belize

What’s happening in Belize could help shape reef conservation across the Caribbean.

Every successful wastewater project provides valuable lessons about financing, planning, governance, and long-term management. Those lessons can help other reef communities move more quickly toward solutions that improve both ocean health and community well-being.

For coral reefs, clean water is one of the most immediate opportunities we have to build resilience in a changing climate.

Climate change remains the biggest challenge facing coral reefs. Reducing wastewater pollution is one of the clearest opportunities to help reefs thrive. For decades, the playbook for saving our oceans has been relatively straightforward: draw a line on a map, declare it a Marine Protected Area (MPA), and restrict activities like commercial fishing, shipping, and industrial drilling. It sounds like a solid plan, and on paper, it looks even better. But there’s a glaring, dirty truth these ocean boundaries cannot stop.

The success of an MPA is closely tied to what happens on land. We spend immense resources managing boat traffic, enforcing fishing quotas, and patrolling blue water, yet we routinely ignore what is flowing into that water from our own coastlines. 

When raw or poorly treated sewage flows into a protected zone, it doesn’t care about conservation boundaries. This raises a critical question: can we actually protect a marine habitat if we do not fix plumbing on land?

The Unseen Invader Inside Our Ocean Refuges

Recent global research has brought this issue to the surface in a big way. A landmark study revealed that nearly three-quarters of the world’s marine protected areas are exposed to wastewater pollution. Even more startling, the problem is most severe in highly biodiverse tropical regions, where up to 92% of MPAs (home to coral reefs) are heavily impacted.

Because we establish protected areas near coastlines to shield coral reefs, we inadvertently place them right in the path of coastal runoff. The issue is not just about unsightly waste on a beach. Sewage acts as an invisible destroyer of marine life in several specific ways.

Nutrient Overload

Human waste is incredibly rich in nitrogen and phosphorus. When these elements flood the sea, they trigger massive, toxic algal blooms. These blooms block out critical sunlight and suck all the oxygen out of the water as they decay, effectively suffocating fish and bottom-dwelling creatures.

Weakened Corals

Excess nitrogen alters the delicate chemistry that corals rely on to build their skeletons. It lowers their tolerance to warming waters and disease, making them far more susceptible to bleaching and slower to recover if they do survive.

Pathogens and Toxins

Untreated wastewater introduces a cocktail of bacteria, viruses, prescription drugs, and heavy metals. Pathogens cause direct tissue infections in marine life, and chemical pollutants accumulate up the food chain, damaging the health of apex predators like dolphins.

Why Ocean Boundaries Aren’t Enough

The fundamental limitation of marine conservation policy is that it’s geographically siloed. A marine park manager has the authority to stop a fishing boat, but they have zero say over a municipal wastewater treatment plant five miles upstream.

If we continue to measure conservation success solely by the square mileage of ocean we rope off, we’re setting ourselves up for a quiet disaster. We might hit global targets to protect 30% of the ocean, but if those areas are constantly bathed in nutrients and pathogens, they will exist only as “paper parks,” protected on a map, but suffering under the surface.

Redefining True Protection

When we consider the immense pressure our oceans face, it becomes clear that drawing lines on a map is not enough. At the Coral Reef Alliance, we’ve learned that corals possess a remarkable natural ability to adapt to climate change, but only if we protect them from contaminated water. If we want our Marine Protected Areas to be fully effective, we have to treat wastewater infrastructure as a foundational pillar of ocean conservation.

That’s why our team works directly with coastal communities to install and upgrade septic systems, restore natural watersheds, and stop the flow of pollution at the source. By cleaning up the water on land, we give coral reefs the breathing room they desperately need to survive.

Healthy reefs depend on healthy watersheds, but they also depend on global action. Our partners at the Ocean Sewage Alliance are working to advance a Global Sewage Treaty (you should sign it), creating an international framework to help countries tackle sewage pollution and protect marine ecosystems.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Kaush, and I am a wildlife conservation biologist, award-winning photographer, and filmmaker from the UK. 

My passion is documenting the amazing creatures that we are lucky enough to share this planet with and sharing those moments with people around the world. I love being out in nature as much as possible! 

A fun fact about me is that (on a good day) I can speak 5 languages.

What was your first experience with the ocean?

Growing up in the suburbs of London, I didn’t have a lot of access to or experiences with the ocean. 

My first proper adventure with the ocean was when I was 17, and I travelled to South Africa to work with scientists conducting research on the reefs. My first time scuba diving (outside of a muddy quarry), I was mesmerised by what I was seeing. It truly was like I was living in a documentary. 

Over the course of a week, I saw more than I could have ever imagined, from pristine reefs to whale sharks and manta rays, and even newborn humpback whales. It was an unforgettable experience, which I think subconsciously shaped my future career.

What are some of your most memorable moments in or on the water?

Documenting sperm whales has to be up there as one of the most memorable moments I have had in the water so far. Feeling their echolocation clicks reverberating through my body and making eye contact with these giant predators is something that will stay with me forever.

I was lucky enough to spend a long time researching whale sharks in the Maldives, and ultimately, this is what kick-started the career path that I am on now. Spending countless hours in the water with these gentle giants, studying their movements and habits, you can’t help but fall in love with them.

How do coral reefs play a role in your life?

Coral reefs are the source of every encounter that I have ever had underwater. From moments with giant whales to mantas feeding on plankton, none of it would be possible without reefs. 

One of my greatest pleasures in life is snorkelling on reefs and seeing the sheer abundance of life. Checking under overhangs for cryptic species, the thrill of seeing a turtle feeding in the distance, listening to the cacophony of noises. 

I could spend all day on a healthy coral reef and not get bored.

Why join CORAL’s Ambassador program?

I love the approach that CORAL takes to protecting reefs. 

The holistic nature and their support of local communities in protecting and restoring coral reefs is something that I really admire. It is exactly the approach that I think is needed in the world at the moment – supporting local communities and science-based conservation.

As a scientist myself, I believe that science needs to be the foundation of any coral project. 

I especially like the way CORAL works across the spectrum from habitat protection to clean water, on projects that might not always make mainstream media, but are no less important to the oceans.

Is there anything you want other aspiring creatives to know about what you learned along the way?

Go out and start telling the stories that you are passionate about. There is never going to be a “right” moment. If you wait until you have a certain camera, or a certain level of experience, you will be waiting forever. 

Go out with the tools that you have right now and practice your craft. 

It probably won’t be good at the start. But this is a prerequisite for growth. 

When you’re working in nature, you always need to be prepared and have a plan. This includes being prepared for nothing to go as planned and to make things up as you go and think on your feet.

The most dangerous threats to coral reefs are the ones you can’t see. This World Oceans Month, we’re diving into these invisible threats and what we’re doing to address them.

Every year in June, we rally together around the world to celebrate our oceans. We talk about the ways our oceans give us life, how we live on a blue planet called “Earth” (oh, the irony), and all the nuances that keep our waters balanced and healthy.

But coral reefs around the world are facing growing threats from water pollution, overfishing, biodiversity loss, and climate change. These threats often happen out of sight, beneath the surface, making them easy to overlook until the damage becomes impossible to ignore.

This year, we’re still celebrating our oceans and all of their majesty, but more importantly, we’re fighting as we grieve the loss our oceans have endured over the past few decades. A lot of these tragedies are preventable and recoverable, and others aren’t. Stay with us as we walk through these threats and how we’re fighting to eliminate them as fast as possible.

Hint: You’ll notice a common thread here. When you work with local communities, you go further. They know their reefs, beaches, and waters, and we have resources to give. Togetherness is the common thread.

Our alliance is full of local communities who have partnered with us to achieve our collective vision: A world where coral reefs are healthy enough to withstand the pressures of climate change.

Water Pollution and Coral Reefs

Threat #1 – The Illusion of Clean Water

Our favorite coastal destinations include ocean views of turquoise waters. We post up on the beach, throw on snorkel gear, and dive into the water, hoping for high visibility and bountiful marine life—or maybe you prefer basking in the sun, no judgment here. 

The reasons we love (and need) clean water are obvious, but how about for coral reefs? Clean water can mean the difference between survival and collapse.

Even crystal clear water can carry pathogens and pollutants that stress coral reefs and disrupt entire marine ecosystems. Sediment runoff from development and agriculture can smother reefs, blocking the sunlight corals need to survive. Wastewater pollution can fuel harmful algae growth and introduce bacteria and excess nutrients into fragile reef ecosystems.

The good news is: We know this is an issue, and we have proven solutions to tackle these threats at the source (no band-aid fixes here).

Our alliance includes local organizations in Hawai‘i who invest in restoring native vegetation along waterways to reduce runoff and erosion, improving riparian zone health from ridge to reef. And in the Western Caribbean, implementing better wastewater management solutions. We’ve recently expanded our clean water efforts to the Eastern Caribbean, and our plans only grow from there.

For coastal communities, clean water supports more than reefs. It protects local food sources, tourism economies, cultural traditions, and public health. Healthy reefs and healthy communities go hand in hand.

By 2030, we will significantly reduce harmful bacteria and nutrients in our priority regions, keeping over 400 million gallons of sewage out of the ocean each year.

Overfishing and Biodiversity Loss on Coral Reefs

Threat #2 – Biodiversity, But A Lot Less of It

Coral reefs are home to some of the highest concentrations of marine biodiversity on Earth! Those who have gone scuba diving in the 90s and early 2000s have otherworldly stories about marine life in the Caribbean. Conchs as far as the eye can see, epic whale activity, and massive pods of dolphins. Today, many reefs are losing the species that keep ecosystems balanced and resilient.

Overfishing, destructive fishing practices, ghost nets and abandoned fishing gear, bottom trawling, and industrial fishing operations can remove key reef species faster than ecosystems can recover. When fish populations decline, coral reefs lose important grazers that help control algae growth and maintain ecological balance.

While a reef may seem to have abundant marine life, the truth is that biodiversity has been greatly depleted over time, all around the world… Except in well-managed marine protected areas (MPAs).

That’s why we work with partners and local communities to strengthen MPAs, improve sustainable fisheries management, and support policies (like fishing bans) that protect coral reef ecosystems for the long term. Our local partners strengthen community-led monitoring and patrolling efforts, improve enforcement, and protect the marine resources communities depend on every day.Our 2030 goal is to ensure 18.5 million acres (75,000km2) of protected areas are effectively managed, ensuring they deliver lasting benefits to reefs and the communities that depend on them.

Ocean Temperatures, Coral Bleaching, and Climate Change

Threat #3 – Invisible Heatwaves

Ocean heatwaves are becoming more frequent and more intense, pushing coral reefs beyond their physiological limits, increasing the occurrence of coral bleaching and coral mortality.

The good news?

Some corals are showing signs of natural adaptation, meaning they may have the genetic ability to better tolerate warmer waters caused by climate change. Scientists and local communities are working together to better understand these processes and identify reefs with the greatest potential for resilience.

Our conservation science work focuses on helping coral reefs adapt naturally by reducing local threats and protecting the reefs most likely to survive climate change. Learn all about our Roadmap to Reef Resilience in the video below.

Local communities and international partners are central to this work. Community members, fishers, and local organizations contribute knowledge, monitoring, and stewardship that help scientists better understand how reefs are changing in real time. By 2030, we’ll have the Roadmap to Reef Resilience implemented across 5 diverse, connected, and vast reef regions. And by 2050, we’ll integrate adaptation strategies into coral reef policies and management plans across 80% of reef regions globally!

The Cost of Inaction

Threat #4 – Doing Nothing

Humanity is going through a lot, we know. But that doesn’t mean we get to shut down. It means we get to double down on the things closest to our hearts. 

Coral reefs are still fighting. Local communities are still showing up for their reefs every day. Scientists, advocates, fishers, students, and supporters around the world are all part of this movement.

And the truth is, we still have a window to act.

Protecting coral reefs requires collective action, long-term conservation, and support for the communities working to protect reefs every single day.

A riparian zone is the area of land alongside rivers, streams, and other freshwater systems where water and land meet. These spaces are often lined with native vegetation, including trees, shrubs, grasses, and wetlands that help stabilize soil and support biodiversity.

Riparian zones may seem far removed from coral reefs, but they are deeply connected. Everything that flows through a watershed eventually reaches the ocean. When riparian areas are healthy, they help keep sediment, pollution, and excess nutrients out of coastal waters. When they are damaged or removed, reefs downstream often feel the impact.

In places like Hawaiʻi, where steep landscapes quickly funnel rainwater from mountains to the sea, riparian zones play a critical role in protecting nearshore ecosystems.

The Elements of a Riparian Zone

Riparian zones are made up of several interconnected features that work together to support clean water and healthy habitats.

Native Vegetation

Plants and tree roots help hold soil in place, reducing erosion during storms and heavy rainfall. Native vegetation also slows water flow, allowing sediment and pollutants to settle before entering streams.

Streams and Wetlands

Freshwater systems transport water, nutrients, and organic material through the landscape. Wetlands within riparian zones act like natural filters, trapping contaminants and absorbing excess runoff.

Wildlife Habitat

Riparian areas support birds, insects, fish, and other wildlife by providing food, shelter, and breeding grounds. Many species rely on these habitats to survive.

Flood Protection

Healthy riparian zones absorb and slow floodwaters, helping reduce damage during intense rain events and protecting nearby communities.

Together, these elements create a buffer between human activity and the ocean.

Healthy vs. Poor Riparian Zone

Not all riparian zones function the same way. Their condition can dramatically influence downstream ecosystems, including coral reefs.

Healthy riparian zones are typically lined with dense native vegetation that helps stabilize streambanks and reduce erosion. Their soils remain intact, waterways run clearer and slower, and wildlife thrives within connected floodplains and wetlands. These natural systems act as buffers, helping maintain water quality while reducing the amount of sediment and pollution that eventually reaches the ocean. Degraded riparian zones look very different. Streambanks may be bare or eroding, invasive plants can outcompete native species, and waterways often become murky with excess sediment. Development, agriculture, and altered water flow can further damage these ecosystems, making it easier for runoff to carry pollutants downstream.

When riparian zones are damaged, rain can wash sediment, fertilizers, bacteria, chemicals, and debris into coastal waters. This runoff can smother coral reefs, block sunlight, and fuel algae growth that competes with corals for space and resources.

How do Riparian Zones Affect Coral Reefs?

Coral reefs depend on clear, balanced ocean conditions to survive, and healthy riparian zones help maintain those conditions upstream.

When forests and vegetation near streams are removed, sediment washes into the ocean more easily. This sediment clouds the water, reducing the sunlight corals need to survive. Fine particles can also settle directly on corals, interfering with feeding, growth, and reproduction.

Runoff often carries additional pollutants into reef ecosystems, including excess nutrients from fertilizers, bacteria from wastewater, chemicals from roads and development, and plastic debris. Together, these stressors weaken reefs that are already facing rising ocean temperatures and coral bleaching.

In Hawaiʻi, the connection between land and sea is especially visible. During heavy rain events, brown sediment plumes can often be seen flowing from streams directly onto nearshore reefs. Protecting riparian zones is one way communities can improve reef health from the mountains to the ocean.

Riparian Zone Restoration Efforts in Maui Nui

Across Maui Nui, communities and local partners are restoring landscapes that help protect coral reefs downstream. In Hawaiʻi, what happens upstream directly affects what happens on the reef, making watershed health an important part of coral conservation.

At the Coral Reef Alliance, our local partners in Hawaiʻi focus on reducing land-based pollution before it reaches coral reefs. Together with partners including Kipuka Olowalu and Ka Honua Momona, we support ridge-to-reef conservation efforts that combine science, cultural knowledge, and community stewardship.

This work includes collecting water quality data to better understand how sediment and pollutants move through watersheds and into nearshore reef systems. We also support restoration efforts that remove invasive species, restore native and canoe plants, stabilize coastal areas, and strengthen natural systems like wetlands, loʻi kalo, and loko iʻa that can help slow runoff and improve water quality.

These efforts do more than protect reefs. They support local leadership and cultural practices, and help create healthier ecosystems from ridge to reef. Because healthy coral reefs start long before the shoreline.

In 1997-8, a powerful El Niño event spread across the Pacific Ocean, driving record-breaking sea surface temperatures and triggering the first documented global coral bleaching event. Reefs from the Indian Ocean to the Caribbean experienced widespread stress, and in some regions, significant coral mortality followed.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this event marked a turning point in how scientists understand the relationship between ocean temperature anomalies and coral reef survival.

What is El Niño vs. a Super El Niño?

El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern defined by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It disrupts circulation, which shifts weather patterns, rainfall, and ocean conditions across the globe. As described by NOAA, El Niño events typically develop every two to seven years and vary in intensity.

A “super” El Niño is a particularly strong event with unusually high ocean temperature anomalies and widespread global impacts. 

These stronger events amplify the stressors reefs already experience. 

Corals live within a narrow temperature range, and even sustained increases of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius above normal can disrupt the symbiotic relationship between corals and the algae that provide them with energy (zooxanthellae). This disruption leads to coral bleaching.

The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) notes that elevated sea temperatures remain the primary driver of mass coral bleaching events worldwide, with El Niño conditions often acting as a trigger.

When Was the Last Super El Niño and What Happened?

The most recent super El Niño occurred from 2015 to 2016 and triggered the longest global coral bleaching event on record. Prolonged heat stress affected reefs across multiple ocean basins, and in some areas, repeated bleaching led to significant coral loss.

The scale and duration of this showed how recovery becomes more difficult when extreme heat events happen too close together.

What Can We Expect to See with This Super El Niño on the Horizon?

Forecasts from NOAA point to above-average ocean temperatures during strong El Niño conditions, and therefore likely widespread coral bleaching.

Bleached corals can survive this stress in the short term, but prolonged exposure reduces their ability to recover. At the same time, stressed corals are less likely to reproduce, limiting recovery and reducing resilience over time. ICRI notes that repeated or severe bleaching leads to long-term reef decline.

El Niño also shifts weather patterns. In the Atlantic and Caribbean, fewer hurricanes may reduce physical damage but also remove a natural cooling effect, resulting in persistent heat stress. None of this is guaranteed, but around the world, we’ve seen some corals surviving heat stress. What Action Can We Take to Minimize the Impact?

At CORAL, we also work to reduce local stressors, which remains one of the most effective ways to support reefs during heat events. Because healthier reefs are more likely to withstand and survive bleaching.

For reef managers and operators, preparedness matters. Monitoring temperature thresholds, improving water quality, and managing tourism pressure can reduce additional stress.

Are Coral Reefs Doomed?

No. Coral reefs are under increasing pressure, but they are not universally doomed. Outcomes vary widely depending on local conditions, heat exposure, management, and evolutionary traits, like heat-tolerant genes.

Some reefs have experienced severe losses after repeated bleaching, while others have shown the ability to recover, particularly where local stressors are reduced. Some coral species and reef systems are more tolerant of heat, shaping which reefs persist.

Think of a coral reef as a bustling city, full of unique homes, buildings, and landscapes. And with that, unique residents who all serve different purposes. This diversity is key to any city.

The same is true underwater.

The diversity of corals—along with the fish, invertebrates, and algae that live among them—is what keeps reef ecosystems healthy. Each species plays a different role, helping reefs grow, recover, and adapt to changing conditions.

Diversity does more than support daily reef life. It’s also what gives reefs the ability to adapt over time. Different coral species have varying levels of tolerance to heat, pollution, and disease. Some corals can withstand higher temperatures than others. Others recover more quickly after bleaching events than others. This genetic diversity will determine what the future of coral reefs will look like.

This range of traits also creates a kind of natural safety net for these precious ecosystems. When environmental conditions change, it’s clear that not all corals respond the same way, meaning some are more likely to survive, reproduce, and pass on those resilient traits while others die off after being too stressed. Over time, this is how reefs adapt and survive in different conditions.

When reefs lose diversity, they lose resilience. But when reefs are diverse, they’re stronger, more stable, and better able to survive.

Why Coral Diversity Matters

Different corals grow in different shapes. Some create branching structures that provide shelter for fish. Others form massive boulders that protect coastlines from waves. Some grow quickly and help reefs recover after disturbances, while others grow slowly but provide long-term stability.

Together, they form a balanced ecosystem.

A diverse reef can recover faster after storms and bleaching events, support more fish and marine life, resist disease and environmental stress, protect coastlines more effectively, and… Adapt to changing ocean conditions.

When diversity declines, reefs become more vulnerable. Losing just a few coral species can change the entire ecosystem.

That’s why protecting coral reef diversity matters and why conservation efforts like creating effectively-managed protected areas and improving water quality play such an important role. Reducing local stressors gives a wide range of coral species the chance to survive and thrive.

Let’s take a look at some of the corals that make up a healthy, diverse reef.

Soft Corals, Flexible and Flowing

Soft corals don’t build hard skeletons like reef-building corals. Instead, they move with the current, adding motion, color, and habitat to the reef. You’ll often spot them filling in the spaces between hard corals, creating a more dynamic and layered ecosystem.

As you move along a reef, a few types show up again and again:

Sea Fans

Sea fans spread out like underwater lace, positioned to catch passing currents that bring food.

Fun fact: Some sea fans can live for decades and grow in the same direction as prevailing currents.

Sea Whips

Long, slender, and flexible, sea whips bend easily with wave motion.

Fun fact: Tiny crustaceans often camouflage themselves along sea whips for protection.

Leather Corals

Leather corals have thick, rubbery bodies and can appear smooth or textured.

Fun fact: Leather corals periodically shed a thin outer layer to remove algae and debris.

Pulsing Corals (like Xenia)

Some soft corals actually pulse rhythmically, opening and closing their polyps in a way that looks almost like breathing.

Fun fact: This pulsing motion may help them regulate oxygen and nutrient exchange.

Soft corals add movement, shelter, and complexity — all of which support reef diversity.

Hard Corals, The Reef Builders

Hard corals are the architects of coral reefs. They build calcium carbonate skeletons that create a physical structure and give reefs their shape. Over time, these skeletons form the foundation for entire ecosystems.

Branching Corals, like Staghorn

These fast-growing corals form dense, antler-like thickets that provide critical shelter for fish and other marine life.

Fun fact: Staghorn coral is one of the fastest-growing corals, helping reefs recover after damage and sometimes growing up to several inches per year.

Boulder Corals, like Brain Coral

Large, rounded, and slow-growing, these corals often live for decades (or even centuries) forming the backbone of older reefs.

Fun fact: Brain corals form rounded colonies with maze-like ridges. Some brain corals can live for hundreds of years and are among the longest-living organisms on the reef.

Plate and Table Corals

These corals grow outward in flat, layered shapes, maximizing their exposure to sunlight.

Elkhorn Coral

With wide, flattened branches, elkhorn coral creates important habitat in shallow waters.

Fun fact: Elkhorn coral helps buffer coastlines by breaking up wave energy before it reaches shore.

Massive Corals

Slow-growing but incredibly durable, these corals can withstand tougher conditions and help stabilize reefs over time.

Fun fact: Their density makes them more resistant to storm damage than branching corals.

Hard corals build the reef’s foundation, but it’s the diversity of shapes, growth rates, and survival strategies that makes reefs resilient.

Protecting Reef Diversity

Protecting coral reef diversity means reducing the stressors that make it harder for species to survive.

Improving water quality helps sensitive corals thrive. Marine protected areas reduce damage from overfishing and anchor drops. Supporting local communities leads to better reef stewardship. Reducing pollution helps maintain balanced ecosystems.

When these protections are in place, reefs can maintain the diversity they need to survive. And when reefs survive, so do the people, wildlife, and coastlines that depend on them.

A Diverse Reef Is a Strong Reef

Coral reefs are strongest when they’re diverse. Different species working together create ecosystems that can recover, adapt, and endure.

Protecting that diversity is one of the most important things we can do for the future of coral reefs.

Because when reefs are diverse, they’re resilient. And resilience is what gives reefs a fighting chance.
