We have a long way to go before architecture offers equal opportunity to all – and Culturally and Racially Marginalised (CARM) practitioners bear the brunt of systemic inequity. Sonia Sarangi reflects on the grim realities revealed through two decades of private conversations, the urgent need for action, and the potential for structural change offered by psychosocial safety legislation. When others share their reality, don’t immediately dismiss them because their reality is dissimilar to yours or because the reality makes you uncomfortable and forces you to see things you prefer to ignore. Avoid creating a hierarchy of human suffering, as if compassion were a finite resource. Lymesmith Colour Workshop

Sonia van de Haar of Lymesmith is running a colour workshop, Foundations of Architectural Colour Design, in Melbourne on 3 September, focused on developing essential and thoughtful colour design skills for architectural practice. A 2015 study of practising architects by Deakin University and the University of Melbourne revealed “… a significant gap between what architects are taught about colour at university and what they feel they ought to know in practice”. Designers know how important colour is for architecture, but many lack confidence in their colour design skills. Colour literally is everywhere, all at once, all the time, but most colour training focuses on colour design for two dimensions, or teaches colour psychology in a simplistic or formulaic way. Spatial designers need colour training attuned to architectural thinking. Lymesmith’s workshops focus on colour in the world, and colour in the wild – colour and its applications in complex environments. Through a combination of colour selection, colour strategy and architectural style, intelligent colour design can create engaging, place-sensitive environments that benefit the people who will use the architecture.
