My wife’s cousin Maria in Sweden told me “You don’t shower with clothes on, why would you sauna with clothes on?”
And (perhaps a bit of overreaction) from a Finnish friend: “It is greatly unsanitary to bring dirty, chlorinated swimsuits—drenched in dirt and bacteria, which are well fostered in the fabric until the suit hits the heat of the sauna and its nasty abominations dissolve and desecrate the senses of women and men, their bodies and souls, so that they return to the world sickly and diseased, and not invigorated and spirited, as they had planned.”
Quite definitely the number one issue for Americans regarding sauna outside of North America is …nudity.
We often look askance at Europe’s legal prostitution, legal pot, high speed autobahns, allowing 16-year-olds to drink beer & wine (or any age with parents), and yes, comfort with nudity – but perhaps we shouldn’t.
Something I’ve learned in a few decades of research comparing the US and EU is that many of the ‘different things’ that Europeans do are for very good reasons. They are often more focused on achieving real practical positive outcomes than hung up on the shallower and often misguided beliefs that dominate in the U.S. And they have good results to show for it. They’re healthier and live longer, kids are much more likely to grow up in a stable home and more likely with two biological parents, they have less violent crime overall and very significantly less rape, sex crimes and human trafficking*, they have 1/5 the road deaths and 1/4 the drunk driving deaths, they are much more law-abiding and they incarcerate about 1/8 as many people as we do. They clearly do a lot of things right.
In most countries (just about all outside the U.S.) everyone enjoys sauna together naked and nobody gives it a second thought. People sauna without clothes because it is more comfortable, makes sauna more enjoyable and importantly, is more hygienic.
But not so much Americans.
Nudity is amazingly complicated. As we looked in to this and read research and analyzed statistics and talked to psychologists we found a variety of nuances that can have critical and sometimes life altering implications. Even with years of researching and writing about family systems, health and other bits comparing the U.S. and Europe I was still quite surprised by what we learned. I hope that the following will provide some useful context to U.S. approach to nudity vs that of the rest of western and other cultures.
(My apologies for how long this is – personal writings don’t have editors and I’m a writer who very much benefits from a good editor.)
Americans have an interesting relationship with nudity and one that is quite different from the rest of the western and other worlds. On the one hand discomfort, fear and a bit of Victorian overreaction. Europeans were enamored, confused and for the most part totally baffled by our reaction to Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction. Most really had no concept of what the hullabaloo was about. They are somewhat baffled by our fear of nudity in saunas generally and totally gobsmacked that most Americans are fearful even of being nude in a single-sex sauna in a gym locker room. As one woman told me, it’s understandable when some individuals have some reticence, but an entire nation?
On the flip side, according to PornHub, gals in the U.S. lead the world, by a considerable margin, in providing the internet with nude porn of themselves (and these amateur nude selfies, usually uploaded by themselves or former boyfriends, are one of the most popular categories of porn on the internet). Within the travel industry American girls are well known for being much easier to get nude selfies from, and get in to bed, than girls from other countries.
We appear to be rather backwards from everyone else – fearful of that which is not harmful and excelling in doing that which is.
In Europe and most of the rest of the world there is a distinction between natural functional nudity and sexual nudity. Not so in the U.S., where we have sexualized nudity so that all nudity is considered sexual.
Victoria & Albert – Though moves towards very strict codes of morality began slightly before Victoria’s reign, she and Albert embraced these changes with some passion and pushed onward with them. Some Victorian principles were certainly quite good such as the push to end slavery. Others perhaps not so good.
Up until this time natural functional nudity was not a thing. It wasn’t good or bad, it just was. Children throughout the world, including the English world and the still new U.S., grew up seeing each other, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends nude on occasion and thought nothing of it. And this likely included the most fervent of religious folk. Bathing was done openly by everyone in a river, lake or tub in the back yard. Parents often had sex in the same room their children were sleeping in. And this appears to have been so throughout all of history and nobody gave it much thought.
While gratuitous erotic or sexual nudity has seen all manner of ebb and flow, support and demonization throughout history and across cultures, natural functional nudity was just a normal part of daily life that wasn’t given any thought.
This all changed during Victoria’s reign. It appears a belief was spread that simple functional nudity itself was sexual (and shameful?) and that children being exposed to any nudity at all would corrupt them – so children must be protected and should never ever see a nude form until they marry.
This took hold somewhat in Britain but was most strictly embraced in the U.S. Nudity was now sexualized and the results haven’t been so good.
Today, while someone in Sweden or Germany might think nothing of natural nudity on a beach or especially in a sauna, as they have for centuries, they wouldn’t consider sending a nude selfie because they know the harm to their future marriage and home stability for their children that could result. Our Victorian English speaking world is the exact opposite – happy to send nude selfies but no way we’ll go nude in a sauna.
Nudity itself is not bad. Nude at a beach isn’t nor in a sauna. Nude art isn’t bad nor is posing for it necessarily bad.
Nobody, including children of any age, is harmed simply by seeing someone nude. It’s actually good for children to be exposed to natural nudity. Many (most?) cultures have a belief in children younger than puberty or early teens going nude at beaches, pools and elsewhere; for their own comfort with their own body and that children seeing each other, parents and friends naturally lessens some of the more harmful sexual nudity in teen years. And this appears to be proven true.

FWIW, I think it would be good for parents of young children to not close the door when showering or changing clothes (but to also let children know as they approach puberty that it’s certainly acceptable if they want to do so). Similarly children under perhaps 10 or 12 should be allowed to skip the swimsuit at beaches and pools (and backyards). And of course, if you have a sauna, then sauna nude. I think that destigmatizing natural nudity for our children (and us) would be a good and healthy thing as our current Victorian culture certainly hasn’t worked out well.
Nudity is also kind of fascinating. Most of us don’t care if someone else sees our hand. We walk around all day with it exposed and anyone who wants can see it. Our genitals are another story. And perhaps one of the oldest stories when we consider that nudity figures prominently in the earliest writings and was one of the first topics discussed in The Bible.
Why so different? It’s just skin. We’re all the same down there. …Well, one of two varieties.
Just as with pre or extra-marital sex, nudity or more specifically erotic or sexual nudity can be a significant issue for marital/relationship bliss.
From the CDC’s National Survey of Family Growth we know that her pre-marital sexual activities are likely the number one predictor of how stable a family she and her children will have. If she’s a virgin at the alter or at least has no partners of any kind of sexual activity other than her husband then she’s very likely to have a stable family. Otherwise, things begin to look not so good for her.
The results are the same regardless of income, religion, educational attainment or age when married (the other key factors) so we can be somewhat certain that there is direct cause and effect. Other factors change the percent of population in each category (column width) but the divorce rates remain largely the same. For instance, as level of education or wealth increases so do the widths of the light blue No or 0 other partners columns as the other columns get narrower. The heights of each column remain about the same however.
(Note: In the following I am, for simplicity, using the word ‘marriage’ to refer to a formal marriage as well as committed-for-life/cohabitation relationships.)
There are a few things that likely contribute to this but the core appears to be weakened commitment for making it through routine struggles that every marriage faces – an underlying foundational thing, not a surface let’s-talk-about-this thing.
One key cause of this weakened commitment, and perhaps the key cause, is her having multiple Oxytocin induced pair-bonds. Any time she does anything sexual with someone, from mutual masturbation to oral to intercourse, she develops a pair-bond with that person and these appear to take some years to subside and likely never go away fully. Her having multiple pair-bonds appears to result in weaker commitment for her and sometimes or often also increased anxiety and depression. This is all baggage that she takes in to her marriage/relationship.
(Note: She/Her here refers to anyone who was female sex at birth, not to gender or gender preference. How our Endocrine system, and thus Oxytocin, functions is based on our physical sex at birth and does not change with gender preference nor so far as we can tell with sex change procedures).
Lacking a similar pair-bond system, his commitment strength appears to somewhat mirror her pair-bond strength. The stronger her pair-bond with him the stronger his commitment and devotion to her and her children. If she has no other pair-bonds and so a 100% strong pair-bond with him then he will likely have a similarly strong bond/commitment towards her. If she has one or more older pair bonds from prior sexual activities and so her bond with her husband is only 30% or 80% as strong then his commitment is similarly weaker.
A marriage is much more likely to survive and thrive through a variety of difficulties with a stronger commitment rather than weaker.
There is also an issue of his being bothered by feeling like he’s sharing his wife with others – every guy she did anything sexual with before (and every guy who has a photo of her nude). This is not an issue in every marriage but is in many. This likely has some roots in her Oxytocin induced pair-bonds though we don’t know for sure.
Whether purely Oxytocin pair-bond based or something else, there is a clear link between her sexual activity and the stability of her marriage, what psychologists refer to as accumulated relationship baggage.
On the other hand, his pre-marital activities do not appear to have any effect on his marriage – statistically nor for the most part based on counselor and psychologist experience. This partially or perhaps primarily because he does not develop pair-bonds as she does.
And yes, it seems unfair that the stability of a family for her children is all up to her but that appears to be the human package that we have to live with. It’s physiology and we do not currently posses any technology for changing it. For perspective, far more unfair is life as a single mom. Fair or not, the outcome will be what it is.

So, how does simple nudity fit in?
We know that prior nudity, just like prior sexual stuff, can negatively affect her marriage. We don’t, or at least I don’t, fully understand why. We know for instance that if she went skinny dipping with some coed friends in uni that in the future her husband might be bothered by this and it might affect his depth of commitment to her and their marriage. Not outwardly with him saying anything but at a foundational level that he may not even connect himself.
I don’t really know why this is though. Why would he care if those guys saw her nude? I’ve asked a lot of guys this question and the majority said that they’d be at least somewhat bothered by it and many that they’d be very bothered by it. None really knew why though. Some say that it’s jealousy but I’m not sure that makes sense as those other guys got to see his wife nude once or twice and he gets to see her nude frequently. What does he have to be jealous of?
And, why is this such a one-way thing? Why are guys so bothered by other guys seeing their wife nude but gals mostly couldn’t care less who sees their husband nude?
There appear to be two key bits to this. First is that for guys sex is purely a physical thing. No emotions or oxytocin pair-bonds or romance. No relationship necessary. This is one reason why guys will so willingly pay a prostitute $200 or $2,000 for sex and gals say ‘that just doesn’t do it for us’. Psychologists are fond of saying that she goes home after sex thinking about him and wondering when he’ll text (her pair-bond system at work), he goes home and flips through Tinder while wondering when his pizza will come (his lack of pair-bond system).
The second is that guys are extremely visually oriented, her genitals in particular, when it comes to sexual arousal. Oh, and variety, variety is huge. This is visual sex. There’s a reason that Playboy was astoundingly successful and Playgirl flopped or that we have 17 strip clubs in our city for guys to see nude gals and 0 for gals to see nude guys (and the business is down over 85% since the introduction of phone cams and selfies) or why he really really really wants her to send him nudes of her and she’s not as interested in nudes of him. Or as some gals have screamed at amazingly dense guys “stop it with the dick pics!”
One rather honest guy once told me “I don’t like the idea of other guys having visual sex with my wife, whom they don’t love and don’t care about. I don’t like that they used or are using her body …the way I did with gals in real life or on the internet. And, I don’t like that she invited them to do this and that on any night there are likely guys jerking off to her (photos).”
We can debate if what he’s feeling is right or wrong. Should he be bothered that a bunch of their uni guy friends saw her nude when they went skinny dipping together? Or not a thing and he should man up and get over it? Or that she sent a nude selfie to a former boyfriend who later shared it and so now it’s on the ‘net for thousands of guys to jerk off on? I don’t know the answer to these questions. Or if there is an answer. And, some of this goes against my rather libertarian/egalitarian tendencies which makes it even more complicated for me.
What we do know is that this does appear to be an issue and does in some or many cases lead to a weakening of his commitment. Rather than coming out strong on the other side of a disagreement thanks to a deep strong (single pair bond?) commitment they come out somewhat damaged, or they don’t come out at all.
Marriage or cohab can be tough at times. The less baggage brought in to the relationship that people need to deal with the better and for many guys this can, rightly or wrongly, and for whatever reason that I still don’t understand, prove to be some surprisingly serious relationship weakening baggage.
What then is risky for marital stability and what not so much?
First, anything up through perhaps pre or even early teens is a non-issue. Playing doctor is not going to affect anyone’s marriage (and may help it). From mid teens on it’s a different story.
If guys getting aroused by seeing her nude is a purpose, even if not her intent, then let’s call that Erotic Nudity. This will likely to have some negative effect on her marriage, some weakened commitment from him, though the extent varies considerably from nothing to an underlying element of divorce. Skinny dipping, nude fun runs, WNBR and a variety of other things fall in to this category. I think perhaps even sauna parties where the primary purpose is seeing gals nude might qualify.
Acts intended by her to arouse one or more guys are Sexual Nudity. These may result in her developing an Oxytocin induced pair-bond and are typically things involving her and one other guy and in particular a guy she’s romantically interested in though that’s perhaps not necessary. Showering or skinny dipping together or perhaps even a group skinny dip if there’s one guy she’s romantically interested in. This falls within the Tech Virgin category and will have similar effect on her marriage.
Finally, if guys getting aroused is not a purpose and there is a practical purpose for being nude, then it’s Natural or Functional Nudity. Bathing, in a shower, sauna, or Turkish bath is functional nudity. Changing in to a swimsuit at the beach generally is. Nude sunbathing in a private yard probably is. Nude sunbathing at a public beach falls somewhere between Functional and Erotic. Any of these might sometimes be an issue in marital stability, especially if other similar age guys were present, but not usually.
I don’t know that there is necessarily a right or wrong here – for who does what or for anyone’s reaction. Erotic and sexual nudity both carry some risk and possibly considerable risk to her marriage. Natural nudity not so much. It will vary from person to person though – one size does not fit all. Someone who will not have children has a lot less to be concerned with here than someone who will.
On the flip side, none of these appear to be a risk for his marriage. Usually, even if she is bothered by something, his having played strip poker in college (or even sex with a number of people) for instance, it’s not something that undermines her commitment to him in any way, as opposed to her having done so appearing to frequently undermine his commitment to her. She may not like what he did but his past is not the relationship breaker that her past is.
For guys being bothered by others seeing their wife nude and how it affects his commitment to her there’s no indication of why it’s an issue for one and another not. It appears to largely be innate and not a choice nor anything he can change though it does sometimes change over time. We can say that this is all terribly unequal and sexist but perhaps far more sexist is her being left to care for her children alone. When our ideals clash with reality, what then?
Whatever she does before marriage appears to have about the same effect on her marriage as doing so during her marriage – there’s not a magic before/after switch that switches off her prior activities.
The likelihood of divorce for her is about the same, ± 84%, whether she has sex with another guy before she gets married or an extra-marital affair after. This possibly because she appears to carry all prior pair-bonds with her in to marriage or cohab.
If her participating in a World Naked Bike Ride after they’re married is OK then her having done so before is likely not an issue. If her playing strip poker or going skinny dipping with some guys after marriage would be an issue then having done so before will be as well.
It is for this reason that some women in Europe will limit who they sauna with prior to marriage.
Time may make a difference though. A significant time period between her pre-marital activities and anything with her husband does appear to somewhat lessen the likelihood of a failed marriage. This may be, or likely is, related to Oxytocin induced pair-bonds with prior partners subsiding over time and that they may subside faster in the absence of new Oxytocin releases. It would not be unreasonable to posit that those 16% of marriages that survive her pre-marital activities are cases where there was a several year period of no activity at all with anyone prior to any activity with her husband. More study is needed to understand this better though.
Nude photos are their own category with their own complications and generally carry higher levels of risk. This is still rather new though so we don’t yet have good data. Some psychologists speculate that nude photos of her being in existence may carry a greater risk to her marriage than her having had sex with someone else. Sending a nude selfie or posing for someone may also create a pair-bond with them which carries its own complications. As one guy said “It’s like being cheated on every day. How many guys are jerking off to pictures they have of my wife?”
There are a number of elements that play in to all of this and this is something where one size certainly does not fit all.
The more similar in age the more of an issue there seems to be. Sauna, skinny dipping or anything else with guys of similar age is often more of an issue than if they are much younger or older. This regardless of her having any romantic interest in them. This is particularly an issue if she or her husband know them in some way.
One example is a gal who spent a couple of years in Europe as an exchange student. Her fiancé knew that she’d been nude at beaches while there and said that it wasn’t a big issue. Some time later he learned that on one of those days she’d run in to some university friends of theirs and chatted for a bit. He told himself that it was not a big deal but it gnaws at him that these other guys had seen his wife nude. He said that it was definitely an issue in their relationship (though as of this writing they are still together and I expect that they will remain so).
Or a sauna example – a gal in Sweden who has grown up with sauna, usually mixed sex family and friends. In her teens, thinking about her future marriage, she decided that she’d not sauna with guys who were close in age until she got married and knew what her husband would be comfortable with. “Why take chances” she said.
One interesting bit about all of this is that single guys will fairly consistently say that they’d never be bothered by any of this. Ask the same guys after they’ve gotten engaged or married and the answer often changes. Part of this is their not wanting to interrupt the gravy train. They’ve got the greatest thing in history going – free sex, free porn of gals they know and variety of both – they don’t want anything to cause any hesitancy on gals part. As Carrie Pitzulo stated “If women can have consequence-free sex, that helps the guys”.
Another is that it’s not macho to be bothered by any of this and most guys are deathly afraid to let on that they’re vulnerable in any way. No way, no how, no matter what reality is. And, they’ve perhaps not yet experienced true love (if you’re imagining a scene from ‘Princess Bride’ you’re not alone…). Gals have largely been friends and sex toys, nobody they planned to devote their lives to, and then they suddenly fall in love with ‘the one’ – this is a whole new experience and they find their outlook changed.
And then some genuinely aren’t bothered and couldn’t care less who’s seen their wife nude or had sex with her. I know a couple of these guys.
This is all focused on her actions, not his. Unfair? This doesn’t perhaps fit well with what U.S. pop culture says but it does appear to be the reality of the human package. We can wish it were different all we want but I’m not sure that’s any more realistic than wishing that we’d never grow old or get cancer. This does not appear to be something that can be socialized away, oxytocin induced pair-bonds in particular.
It’s important to keep in mind, especially regarding that chart above, that some marriages do survive all kinds of stuff that would be predicted to end it. While 87% of marriages may not survive her having had multiple sex partners, 13% will and some or many of these will be strong solid relationships. Not great odds but not totally hopeless either.
One final point. If she’ll not be having children and a stable life-long relationship is not critical to her then this all may be largely mute. She can likely do whatever without much in the way of negative side effects. I’ve known several women for whom this was the case and most have seemed to live a good, happy and fulfilled lives. Three in particular chose to not have children so that they could pursue other goals; one in business, one in scientific research and one as an arctic explorer. It’s not for everyone but for some it works well.
We finally get to sauna. But now with better knowledge and understanding.
People sauna without clothes because it is more comfortable individually, makes sauna more comfortable and enjoyable for everyone and importantly, is more hygienic.
Individual Comfort – It is more comfortable in the sauna because swimsuits or towels wrapped around us keep our skin from breathing, sweating properly and cooling. Areas covered by a swimsuit can take longer to warm up and then can be much hotter, stuffy and uncomfortable feeling than the rest of our body. Our body cools itself by sweating and then this sweat evaporates resulting in cooling our skin (enthalpy of evaporation). Swimsuits hamper this evaporative cooling.
It’s especially more comfortable outside. Skin dries fairly quickly making it enjoyable to stand outside. Swimsuits not so much. A wet swimsuit and worse, a dripping swimsuit, isn’t comfortable, especially when it’s cold or breezy. The time spent out of the sauna cooling down between rounds is as important as the time spent in the sauna and an uncomfortable cold wet swimsuit can make this time less enjoyable, not relaxing and shorten the amount of time we want to stay outside so our body never properly cools.
This also makes the routine of showering before sauna and then rinsing well after each round a lot easier and more effective.
And finally, a sweaty swimsuit feels gross. And unfortunately showering does not rinse the sweat and bacteria from our swimsuit or our skin underneath it.
Hygiene & Health – there are three elements to this.
First is our skin – having all of our skin exposed to air reduces or eliminates bacteria growth and odors that happen any time we sweat. One of the great things about sauna is that we naturally rid ourselves of bacteria that has built up since our last sauna – and that’s good and healthy for our body and skin. But skin covered in cloth doesn’t breath well and becomes a haven for bacterial growth …and the odors that come with it.
It is also difficult (impossible really) to clean ourselves well with a swimsuit on (and thanks to apocrine glands, these are parts that need cleaning the most) so the bacteria doesn’t get rinsed off between rounds and continues to grow. There is also sometimes an issue of fecal matter or urine (it’s natural, it happens to everybody, but we should rinse it off). Inevitably someone wearing a swimsuit in a sauna can begin to smell by their second or third round and they also take all of this in to the plunge or other pools with them.
Some people, guys and gals, can develop a chafing rash from a swimsuit rubbing on sweaty skin. As well, wearing a swimsuit in a sauna may increase problems of candida and yeast infections.
Second is cloth – if it is not freshly cleaned with unscented detergent it can transport unappealing chemicals, scents and bacteria that become offensive in the heat of a sauna. This might include chemicals from detergents, chlorine or sweat. There can also be fecal matter or urine in swimsuits that, short of putting on a fresh clean suit every round, can’t be prevented. Then there’s the issue of people who don’t wash their suits frequently enough which isn’t obvious in a swimming pool but definitely can be in a hot sauna.
Third is micro plastics – this may be more educated speculation at this point in time than proven but something to consider. While we can smell the bacteria or strongly scented detergent emanating from offending swimwear, we don’t know for sure about micro plastics. We know that most swimsuits emit micro plastics (PM1.0) and we know that this is more likely to happen with the higher temps of a sauna. We also know that PFAS is more likely to be emitted from these plastics in higher heat. If the dose is enough to be concerned about is unknown. Some scientists have said it is but that I’m aware of there has been no study nor any solid evidence to prove this.
Egalitarian Comfort. There is a element of equality and equal vulnerability. Since it is more comfortable individually to be nude and results in a more pleasant and hygienic environment for everyone then most people do prefer to sauna naked. However, it can be uncomfortable for some, particularly women, to be naked when others are clothed. It is thus best for everyone to be naked so that everyone is equally vulnerable and so also equally comfortable.

It goes much deeper than this though as this experience of being naked and vulnerable among others affects our psyche and helps us to accept our own vulnerabilities and view others with a more humane, respectful and equal vision.
I’ve also been told that some take someone wearing a swimsuit in an otherwise nude sauna as an insult, as if someone is saying ‘I’m better than you, I’m too good to be nude’.
Why Require Bathers To Be Nude? Most saunas forbid swimsuits, not just recommend not wearing them (and some require that you use their towels, not your own that may have detergent chemicals).
A Note On Chlorine In Pools. Salt systems produce a continuous lower level of chlorine – just enough to deal with bacteria and other germs. Besides less of it, the resulting chemical composition is also itself a more gentler natural solution. This can work well with lower bacterial loads such as most private pools, some general use public pools and textile-free spas. This does not work so well when bacterial and other germ loads are very high or highly variable such as those at textile spas where people have been sweating and growing bacteria under their swimsuits.
Additive chlorine on the other hand results in a cycle of high chlorine > high bacteria. About a minute after chlorine is added the amount of chlorine in the pool peaks and about a minute after that we start to smell the chloramine that’s being produced. This is the worst period for skin, eye, respiratory and hair irritation and damage. Over time, typically ≈2 hours in a public pool, the chlorine declines while the germ load may increase until chlorine is added again. Some textile spa operators have experimented with micro-dosing chlorine to try to emulate the better environment of a salt electrolysis systems but this is apparently quite difficult with the higher bacteria and germ load.
Overall it’s much better to reduce the amount of harmful/offensive germs and bacteria that enter pools to begin with – e.g., textile-free spas.
Note: Some germs and bacteria (bacteria is actually a type of germ along with viruses, fungi, and helminths/protozoans/parasites) are quite good for us. It’s actually unhealthy to have a germ free environment as it results in a weaker immune system and other health problems.
A spa that requires bathers be nude is overall cleaner and healthier for us than one that allows swimsuits.

Are Guys Checking Out Nude Gals? – Of course. That’s part of the human package. But it’s appreciation rather sexual in this context. This is I think a difficult concept for Americans to grasp given a culture that equates nudity with sex but it’s really not sexual. While those from outside of the U.S. are accustomed to non-sexual nudity, those from the U.S. are not. Skinny dipping in the U.S. is generally sexual – guys getting to see nude gals. Sauna in Europe is not, it’s just normal. I think that for most in the U.S., guys in particular, it may take numerous experiences to understand just how non-sexual this is.
Also, sauna etiquette says to not stare and to keep your eyes on people’s faces. Again, for Americans this becomes easier and more natural over time with more experience.
A note on this. Many people have some bit of difficulty looking others in their face. Some people are just very shy. There’s a joke that the best way to know if a Swede likes you is if they look at your feet instead of their own. Those on the autism spectrum, including those with Asperger’s, can have some difficulty here.
Also, a couple of guys, one from Germany and one from Sweden, have told me that being around a bunch of gals in bikini’s is much more sexually stimulating than the same people nude in a sauna.
For those confused by the first half discussing the risks of nudity and now kind of advocating for it, that’s life. Life is not simple cut and dried. I’ve done my best to present all sides as best I can. There may be some risks (beyond Americans embarrassing discomfort) to consider. Some may want to never go nude, some same-sex only, some only with family, some only close friends and family, some may avoid nudity with those similar in age, etc. And then many don’t care and will sauna nude anytime. We would much rather sauna with friends wearing swimsuits (and suits are the norm in America) than not sauna with them at all so we’re totally fine either way. There is no right or wrong here – people should simply make the best choices for their life plans.
While nude is the norm outside of the U.S., there are some nuanced variations.
Continental Tradition – Most cultures, including Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Northern Italy, Eastern Switzerland, French Alps and others are all nude all mixed all the time. This goes for public as well as private and sexes are mixed. You will actually be yelled at for attempting to wear a swimsuit in Germany and others (one of my more embarrassing experiences). It may be important to note however that survey’s indicate that ≈ 50% of Germans are not comfortable going nude at a beach and about 20% a mixed sex sauna with other than family. So while Germany’s ‘culture’ might be all nude all of the time, not everyone is comfortable with that culture. I’m told one difference in beach and sauna is due to cell phone cameras and people, quite understandably, not wanting photos posted online. Others have said that it’s simply not usually necessary at a beach though they’ll also defend any who prefer to be nude.
Sweden is somewhat more reserved. Private saunas for family and friends are usually mixed sex and nude. Brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, other relatives and friends all together. And it’s totally normal and natural. Depending on the group they will occasionally separate by sex though. It’s not unusual for girls to become selective about who they sauna with from about mid teens until marriage. Public saunas vary but mixed nude is the norm.
Norway is somewhat similar to Sweden for private saunas but public saunas are more likely to be separated by sex or require swimsuits (though this is changing).
Finland and Estonia are a bit more modest yet. Families and close extended family will all sauna together nude. When distant family or friends are included the default is women only going first and then anyone is welcome. If there is only one woman who wants women only then other women will join her even if they’d normally do mixed later. And there is zero judgement either way. The women only time is also somewhat cooler which many women prefer so sometimes this may be as much for temperature as modesty.
Businesses in Finland will often have either separate men’s and women’s saunas or often a single sauna with a schedule of times for women and mixed. Some will also have separate times for men.
France is kind of split. Eastern France, particularly Rhône-Alpes, where about 90% of France’s saunas are, is mixed nude. The rest is largely a swimsuit world though that seems to be slowly changing. The further you get from Germany or the Alps, the more likely you’ll need a suit.
Poland has, since WWII, leaned somewhat towards the American swimsuits culture though recently they’ve been moving back towards more of a Finnish, Nordic or German culture.
Public saunas across Europe (and elsewhere) are a mixed bag. Most are all nude and mixed sex. Of the rest, most are nude, no suits allowed, with variations in separating by sex or not. Some will be mixed much of the time but have some specific times for just women. A few for tourists are swimsuits optional or required and similarly some in France. Going to sauna with business associates, public or private sauna, varies but all together nude isn’t unusual though some will segregate by sex.
Larger spas and sauna worlds might have small sections (wet areas) for women only and men only and then a larger mixed section so that everyone has a comfortable option. Some however have found that the men’s section becomes the gay section and are considering eliminating it. This latter not because of anything negative against gays but that these sometimes become more of a sexualized environment.
Saunas may be mixed sex nude but there is a clear Male / Female modesty difference. If there are 30 German couples in an Alpine resort most of the men will go to sauna but only perhaps 20 of the women and one or two of these women will keep a towel partially wrapped around themselves. If 30 Finnish couples then maybe only 10-12 of the women will go to sauna. This has also been our experience at places like Adler Lodge Alpé.
In some cases the women or men are simply not comfortable being nude around others. From conversations with a number of people it is also clear that women don’t care who sees their husband nude but some men aren’t so comfortable with other men outside of family seeing their wife nude. The takeaway here is that it’s important to keep in mind that whatever anyone is or is not comfortable with is completely normal and acceptable. There is no right or wrong. There’s nothing wrong with being nude in a sauna nor being uncomfortable with it.
English Speaking Countries are the most reserved with the U.S. the most of the most. The U.S. is generally all swimsuits all the time and we’re pretty much the odd ones out on this. Or worse, it’s not unusual to see people wearing sweaty workout clothes in U.S. gym saunas. Fortunately this is changing, though very very slowly.
On the other hand, teens and 20-somethings in the U.S. will get together for nude sauna parties.
Editorial Comment: Our nudity-is-always-sexual or nudity-is-shameful ethos does not appear to have served us well. We have become leaders in many of the negative things that fearful people warned would happen …if we didn’t continue the belief that all nudity is sexual. I think changing this for those who’ve grown up with it is difficult and I don’t think any kind of mass change would be good anyway because I think it is something that for most you do need to grow up with. We can change it for our children though so that they can grow up with a healthier and more balanced attitude and hopefully avoid some of the negative bits that permeate U.S. sex culture today. I know this sounds nutty to most in the U.S. but that’s because we’ve grown up with and still think that nudity-is-always-sexual.
Editorial Comment II: On the backwards from everyone else bit… While not concerned about a bit of nudity, other cultures are concerned about violence in media. Us? Not so much. There was far more angst over Janet Jackson’s nipple slip than that U.S. drivers kill 5x as many of our children as drivers elsewhere. I’m not sure we have our priorities sorted very well.
Native American’s were traditionally all nude all the time in their sweat lodges though that changed somewhat with the advent of victorian principles.
Japan and many parts of Asia were traditionally all nude all the time, then somewhat Americanized after WWII and today seem to be reverting back to mixed nude.
Hammam culture in the Middle East and elsewhere varies. Most today are nude but with sexes separated. In Turkey and some other more secular countries mixed sex nude has been the norm though recently there has been pressure to change that.
I’ve talked with numerous secular and religious Jews, Christians and Evangelicals across Europe who all seem just as comfortable with being nude in a mixed sex sauna as anyone. For these religions this does seem to be purely a U.S. cultural thing and not a religious thing. My first nude sauna experience in Germany was actually with a evangelical Baptist pastor (who’s dad IIRC was a cousin and friend of Dietrich Bonhoeffer) I was interviewing for his work with drug addicts and he invited me to their sauna club.
No Judgement / No Coercion – I want to emphasize this again. Nobody, guy or gal, should ever be judged for their comfort or discomfort with nudity, their comfort or discomfort with their spouses nudity, nor coerced to do something they’re uncomfortable with. We are all different and there is no right or wrong with this.
For those who choose to wear a swimsuit in the sauna and for what to wear for a jump in the lake…
There are three key properties to cloth that are important here:
Breathability – Cloth doesn’t breath very well so any part of our bodies covered with cloth will, in the sauna, be hotter, sweatier and more uncomfortable than areas open to air.
Harbors Gook – Cloth can retain various substances from cleaning products to sweat to chlorine to whatever you can imagine. Sometimes these can affect the fresh environment in a sauna.
Retains/Drips Cold Water – Cloth retains water and moisture. After toweling skin drys in about 5-10 seconds. A thin skin tight swimsuit in about 3-5 minutes, looser swimsuits in about 20 minutes. There are two problems with this. The first is that it can be cold and the process of evaporation makes them even colder. Standing around outside between sauna rounds when it’s cool or cold with dry skin is quite comfortable but in a cold wet swimsuit not so much. Worse is that loose swimsuits drip and having cold water dripping on your legs and feet from your swimsuit isn’t very pleasant.
So, the important considerations are; cover as little skin as necessary with cloth, choose cloth that breaths well, dries quickly and retains as little water or chemicals as possible. Generally the thinner the better and the more tight fitting the better.
For guys; briefs (‘speedo’) are best but a tight fitting square leg, square cut or boxer (three names for the same thing) is a bit more modest for sensitive U.S. eyes and works well to avoid uncomfortable cold drips. Jammers are probably third best with loose trunks or board shorts the worst.
While nude is the norm outside of the U.S., it’s not in the U.S. and is not something we’re in any way hung up on. We’d much rather sauna with friends and family wearing suits than not sauna with them at all.

* Rape and human trafficking rates are both highly correlated to the criminalization of prostitution. Countries with legal prostitution have lower rates of both. Sweden since 2000, Norway since 2009 and France since 2016 have all seen continual increases in both after enacting ‘The Nordic Model’. In light of this some proponents of using the Nordic Model in support of women’s rights have begun to re-evaluate. The U.S., the only other developed country to criminalize prostitution, has consistently had the highest rates of rapes and was only recently passed by Sweden with Norway and France close behind. A lesbian relationship often experiences what some call an oxy-storm due to both having similar oxytocin induced pair-bond systems. This often causes relationships to develop very fast resulting in u-hauling where they move in together quickly and then move out just as quickly. A lesbian relationship that restrains the oxy-storm a bit and avoids u-hauling can be extremely strong however.
A lesbian relationship within a polygynous relationship is often quite stable as is the polygynous relationship itself.
Overall, Heterosexual and Polygynous relationships are the most stable, Female same-sex are a fairly close second while Male same-sex relationships and Polyamorous are very unstable.

Some notes on the U.S. Lifetime Divorce Rate Chart.
The Two Blue columns are; No sexual activity prior to marriage and No sexual activity prior to marriage with anyone other than her husband. There was some ambiguity in the wording of the NSFG that for some respondents could potentially result in an incorrect response so these columns might be slightly wider or narrower than reality but likely not appreciably different.
The slight dip for 3+ other partners is real and has been the subject of numerous conversations. Possibly the best guess is that as her number of sex partners increases the quality of her husband declines and this dip is a sort of crossover of better quality husbands to lessor quality husbands. While there is some solid info behind that it is far from proven in any way.
The numbers for cohabitating unions is fairly similar. The biggest difference is the blue No Partners Of Any Sort and 0 Partners Other Than Mate are about 3x as high while other columns are approximately 10-20% higher.
]]>Located in an alpine meadow above Merano Italy. Our group of four, who’ve travelled together often for the past 10 years, are somewhat split between San Luis and Adler. Though we all like both and will return to both, three think San Luis the better food and service by a slim margin over Adler. San Luis is a bit more formal than Adler or La Perla.
Most of the thermal suite is under the gardens which I thought a good idea. The nearest and smallest is the Turkish bath, the middle includes the Sauna and Hay Sauna and the largest and closest to the lodge includes a sun room on the lake side and fitness area on the back. The chef uses herbs from the garden in many preparations.
Here also was possibly our (two of us) favorite hike – from San Luis to Leadner Alm (1514m).

Each morning they delivered breakfast including ingredients for various egg dishes along with pancake batter. I think we preferred walking to the lodge and having them prepare everything but this was a fun alternative.
One nice bit about San Luis was having the village of Merano nearby. One day, rather than hiking, we visited the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle which was quite spectacular. The gardens are mostly up along a fairly steep hillside that in some places requires gardeners to use climbing kit to access.

This is a wine making region and often on steep slopes such as these of Innerleiterhof winery.
The Spa at San Luis includes massage rooms on the main level and then below on the lake level a fitness center, glass walled sunroom with loungers, indoor/outdoor pool and the sauna/wet area.
The wet area includes a Finnish Sauna, Hay Sauna, Turkish Bath and 4 showers. The interior is kind of spartan / industrial chic that works well.

This was the least of the sauna hot rooms on this trip – but the lake to cool off in after each round kind of almost made up for it. The benches are too low so bathers have the dreaded ‘cold feet’. Since it’s a larger sauna (≈13’ x 13’ x 9’) it wasn’t as bad as benches being too low in a smaller sauna but was still noticeable. EVERYONE using this sauna kept their feet hugged up on the sitting bench because of this. The funniest was two couples from Germany who came in together and about 1 minute after sitting down they all pulled their feet up at the same time.
Community – Not as many people went to the sauna as at Adler and not as often so opportunities to get to know people were somewhat limited. Everyone was quite pleasant though and included a few folks from Germany, newlyweds from New Zealand and a gal and her mom from Italy.
Chateau’s here also have personal saunas but sadly these are just a couple of steps above a typical North American kit sauna. Not only did this sauna have very cold toes compliments of too low of benches but due to the minimal heater wall to bench wall distance it did not have a good convective loop and instead heat kind of rises in to bathers faces. This combined with noticeable radiant from the stove resulted in a not so pleasant experience. The minimal air gap in the benches and skirts likely contributed to the poor convective loop and steam never descending below mid back.
A not so good sauna in our Chateau. A bit more height to get the foot bench above the stones and cold zone, some more depth to get bathers away from the heater and proper mechanical downdraft ventilation would have made a huge difference.
We finished off with a couple of nights in the village of Torno on the shore of Lake Como. We drove up to Bellagio for some exploration and lunch followed by a boat tour of one of the three arms of the lake.

Dinner our last night at Il Sereno before flying home the next day. The food that was served properly was excellent. Unfortunately the service was exceptionally poor so some food cooled too much, one dried out waiting on the sauce, and several times we had to wait on water or wine to be refilled that also degraded the food quality.

Yes, private and public saunas (and other thermal experiences) here as throughout Europe and most of the world outside of the U.S. are indeed nude and often mixed sex.
This is not really a big issue for most except U.S. Americans. We are the odd one’s out.
Most of these spas have a fairly large area, sometimes called a Thermal Suite, Wet Area, or Sauna Landscape that is in its entirety designated as nude. Thermal suites typically include a larger central room or corridor and then off of that the various thermal experiences such as sauna, Turkish bath and other options as well as showers and a place to cool down outside. These are sometimes very segregated from textile (clothing required) areas and sometimes only minimally. Similarly, some always require a towel or swimsuit outside of wet areas, a few allow nudity throughout the spa, pools and sun lounges and many fall somewhere in between where you might wear a towel to walk from the sauna to the pool or lake but dropping it and jumping in to cool off and swim is fine.
A typical routine is sauna for 10-15 minutes, cold shower or swim, cool off further outside, repeat. Most people will do all of this nude except for wrapping a towel on when leaving the wet area.
Why Sauna Nude?
Overall being nude makes for a cleaner, healthier, easier and more comfortable and enjoyable experience. It’s functional.

But why enforce nudity for everyone? Healthier air and avoiding offensive odors from those wearing suits is one reason. Cleaner water in pools and plunges is perhaps even more important. Another is that being nude is most comfortable for each of us individually so most people do prefer to be nude, but being naked also makes us somewhat vulnerable, which is itself good but it’s then also best and most comfortable for everyone, particularly women, if everyone is equally vulnerable.
Some also take others wearing a suit as an insult, as if someone is saying ‘I’m too good to be nude’.
Sexual? Not really, guys will certainly notice nude women but it’s perhaps more appreciation than sexual in this context and similar to noticing someone who has an attractive face. This is I think a very difficult concept for Americans to grasp given a culture that has sexualized all nudity and where most guys primary exposure to nudity is porn – but it’s really not sexual here. This is functional nudity that is very different than sexual or erotic nudity.
We in the U.S. today are very much the odd ones out on this – both culturally and historically. About 99% of saunas outside of the U.S. are and always have been nude and it has not been a problem. Natural functional nudity was normal in North America until the early 20th century when new Victorian principles and legalism fully took hold here (including prohibitions on alcohol, consenting adult prostitution, a long list of books, gambling and other bits). And this has not proven good for us.
Jews and Christians across Europe, including evangelicals, seem just as comfortable with nudity as anyone. My first nude sauna experience in Germany was actually with an evangelical Baptist pastor I was interviewing for his work with drug addicts and he invited me to his sauna club. That was almost 30 years ago. This does appear to be a U.S. cultural thing, not religious, though religious teachings certainly played a role in shaping our post Victorian culture.
If you are uncomfortable with this for yourself, as even many from Germany and elsewhere are, that’s totally fine and understandable – it’s purely personal choice. There are other options for the late afternoon relaxing including laying by the pool, in sunrooms, swimming or taking a nap in your chalet. Many people who are comfortable with nudity also don’t sauna every day and some days prefer to just relax by the pool.
Our home sauna is whatever everyone is comfortable with but the default is swimsuits or towels fully wrapped. Sauna is a wonderful social activity and we’d much prefer to sauna with friends than not sauna with them at all.
Some resorts will sometimes not strictly enforce nudity. San Luis for instance says that swimsuits are acceptable in the Hay Sauna and La Perla says that if it’s only Americans they’ll not enforce it in their sauna unless someone complains.
Twice at La Perla some Americans experienced the shock of going in to a sauna with suits on and being told by those already in there that they couldn’t wear them. Once was the second time I’ve heard a German woman point to the door and quietly but demandingly say “Aus”! The first time, about 25 years ago, I was the one on the receiving end. One of these American’s argued about it, left in quite a huff, complained to the front desk and was apparently quite outraged when the front desk told them that swimsuits were indeed not allowed.

Editorial Comment: We are fearful of that which is harmless and excel in doing that which is harmful.
Despite our fear of natural functional nudity, criminalizing consenting adult prostitution and similar bits, we have higher rates of rape, sexual assault and human trafficking, U.S. teens and 20’s gals provide the world with the bulk of its amateur selfie porn and a child here is more likely to grow up in a broken home. No wonder Europeans often view us with disdain as a country of perverts.
We have the highest legal drinking age and 4x the drunk driving deaths. We incarcerate 9x as many people (yes, per capita) and have higher crime rates.
We pour new human wine in to old stiff legalistic wineskins and are shocked when they explode. Our Victorian principles and legalism don’t seem to be working.
Could we perhaps learn something from these sinfully nude Europeans who have legal prostitution and allow 16-year-olds to drink?
Americans! Sadly I’ll add this. Americans are often not appreciated nor well liked in Europe. As one person told me “we tolerate Americans in tourist areas, not so much for our holidays”. And that from someone who enjoys visiting the U.S. every year.
We are, according to many in Europe, “far too loud, obnoxious, arrogant, ignorant and immature”. Oh, if we disagree with that statement then they’ll say, rightly, that we’re exemplifying three of those; arrogance, ignorance and immaturity.
I think it’s critical to understand what underlies some of this. First is that Consideration and Respect For Others is very important for Europeans vs American’s Me and My Rights attitude that they see as selfish and elitist. They think ‘My Community’ rather than ‘Me’ and My Community can be the people they are in the sauna with, the community they live in, their country, or in particular their family and the friend group they’ve had since they were teens. They also value Personal Space and this includes head space.
So, they talk quietly so that they don’t disturb or annoy others while we think it’s our right to talk as loud (and obnoxiously display our arrogance, ignorance and and immaturity) as we want. They understand that a loud environment suppresses our cognitive ability and believe that doing so is unhealthy and rude. Their rule of thumb is that somebody 1m (3 feet) shouldn’t be able to understand them and 2m away shouldn’t be able to hear them. Yes, that quiet.
When a server doesn’t ask how we’re doing or someone on the street doesn’t say ‘hello’ it’s because they believe that doing so is interrupting us (and it is) and that would be inconsiderate of them. They stay as far right as possible on multi-lane roads, don’t block the left lane and generally try to be considerate of other drivers and especially of people walking or riding a bicycle.
They believe that not being honest and direct with someone is disrespectful and inconsiderate so they are very honest and direct, which we are offended by, leaving them confused why we’re offended by honesty.
Many restaurant owners and chefs believe they have an obligation to their community to serve food that in its composition and portion is healthy and of high quality. Serving unhealthy or poor quality food or large portions is seen as being disrespectful toward their guests. Similarly, manufacturers and retailers feel a duty to offer quality products and to not mislead customers about them just to make more profit (consumers are also more knowledgable and would often rather have one quality product than five cheap products).
They feel a duty to walk or bicycle for local trips (less than 1-3 miles each way) rather than drive. This because they know it is critical to good health and they feel they shouldn’t become a burden to their healthcare system. They know it results in less air and noise pollution which is being considerate of others. And, it costs them less and costs their community less.
This even extends to traffic engineers who are considerate of everyone, not just drivers, and are very focused on comfort and safety for all, particularly more vulnerable who are walking, bicycling or using a mobility device. They are also very considerate of those nearby in homes or businesses and try not to negatively impact them, or ideally have a positive impact. American traffic engineers are focused almost exclusively on low delay for drivers with little or no consideration for people walking, bicycling, living or working nearby. That widening a roadway to increase traffic throughput will increase noise and air pollution for residents and make crossing a street more dangerous is not a consideration for U.S. traffic engineers.
They try not to negatively impact others in any way if possible.
Second, there is much less Class Hierarchy. Everyone is on the same level and of equal value. A CEO is expected to wash their lunch dishes just as anyone else. While there may be a chain-of-command in a business or other organization, in life as in the sauna everyone is equal and nobody has any greater rights or status than anyone else. In many countries this also includes a bit of consensus culture so a CEO or manager may have ultimate decision authority but they will value input from everyone at every level and will try to find a consensus solution (which sometimes involves increasing people’s knowledge so that they understand better, or a decision maker changing their mind based on knowledge from others further down the chain).
And Third, they have a High Regard for Learning and Knowledge. Part of this is simply that they know the benefits of good accurate knowledge for making good decisions – personal, business, or polis. They also believe that it is their responsibility to those in their community and that not doing so is… disrespectful and inconsiderate of others. They believe it’s important to take life somewhat seriously and to try to create a better world for everyone and that not doing so is inconsiderate and disrespectful of friends, family and especially children who will inherit this world. They have little regard for the ‘don’t overthink it’ ethos that’s increasingly engulfing the U.S. and more than a few have mentioned that American’s are quite gullible due to our lack of desire to learn and our love for the ‘easy button’.
It’s interesting how this comes across in different cultures. Germans are very direct ‘do this don’t do that’, a Finn will make a suggestion and if you don’t get the point they’ll make the suggestion again, …and again. After a while you get the message that what they really mean is ‘do this don’t do that’.
And no, I am not saying that they are perfect. Far from it. Every culture has it’s issues. Danes are fond of saying that Swedes are just the human form of Germans A few Finns have told me that they wish their culture was a little more open and friendly like the U.S. Only a little though, a tiny little
I think actually that most Europeans like Americans, or want to like Americans, they just don’t like these things about us. And there are many Americans who are not so ignorant and boorish, who are respectful, fit in and don’t stand out like a sore thumb.
If you want to understand Europe and Europeans better there are two books I’d recommend; ‘The Happiest Kids In The World’ by Rina Mae Acosta & Michele Hutchison and ‘Bringing Up Bebe’ by Pamela Druckerman. I’ve found that the best way to understand a culture is to study how they raise their children and these are two of the best. Others to consider; ‘There’s No Such Thing As Bad Weather’, ‘The Danish Way Of Parenting’, and ‘Achtung Baby’. Also, Rick Steve’s ‘Travel As A Political Act’ is a worthwhile read as well.
An American Friendly Option – For those uncomfortable with nudity or with children who may not enjoy a calmer atmosphere, a good option may be The Naturhotel Forsthofgut in Austria. In addition to the traditional wet area spa they also have a textile (swimsuits allowed) spa ‘for our international guests with different sauna traditions’. This can provide a good opportunity to enjoy a spa in the comfort of your swimsuit while still having the option of a true sauna experience if you want. Similarly, people can go to sauna at the same time but chose the option that’s most comfortable for each individual.
Similar to most alpine spa’s, I don’t believe they strictly enforce age restrictions unless children are ill-behaved, so if the whole family wants to experience the traditional wet area once or more while you’re there you’d likely be welcomed.
This is much larger than the more typical boutique alpine spa resorts so not as personal of service and not as calm or relaxing of an atmosphere but still a wonderful experience. It is family owned by a quite wonderful family, not a corporate entity. Children are still expected to behave but not to the level of other spas.

]]>The South Tyrol, though in Italy, is historically and culturally Germanic having formerly been a part of Bavaria and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This culture still predominates.
A typical day at an Alpine Spa Resort includes hiking, stopping at a mountain hut for lunch along the way, two or three hours of relaxing sauna (or swimming, reading or napping) in the evening followed by wonderful meals with friends old and new. It’s a great balance of exertion and relaxation (and luxury).
For those who want less exertion there’s the option of relaxing at the Spa all day. One couple we know from Germany visit Adler every fall – she goes on challenging hikes and climbs with her friends and he enjoys a wonderful day relaxing in the spa. And for those looking for greater challenges there are ample opportunities for both longer hikes and more technically challenging climbs.
These are all-inclusive (European style) so you have an assigned table for dinner. This allows you to get to know your dinner neighbors and servers. The food quality (fresh local ingredients and preparation) at all of these (and the huts and alms) is on par with or often superior to the best locavore restaurants in the U.S.
This all isn’t limited to just the South Tyrol though. You’ll find great spa resorts, spa hotels, spas, huts with great food, hiking and biking throughout the Alps in Monaco, France, Switzerland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Germany, Austria and Slovenia. There is also wonderful hut to hut hiking in the Pyrenees and hundreds (or thousands?) of options outside of major mountain ranges such as Papa Rhein Hotel & Spa. A key element of all of these are the thermal suites and in particular the saunas. For many people these are the primary reason for traveling and staying.

Like most cities outside of the U.S. they prioritize space and safety for people (walking & bicycling) rather than cars.
La Perla is located in the village of Corvara Italy. They have a few options for eating, all with very wonderful food, including a Michelin starred restaurant. For wine enthusiasts they have a great collection including Barolo’s back to the 1950’s. There are also other options for eating in the village but I think nothing better than what La Perla offers.
A favorite easier hike begins below one of the lifts, continues to some waterfalls and then for those up to it – up the mountain to a Hüüt for lunch. This is a great hike for getting acclimatized to the altitude.
Not gourmet but a wonderful local specialty.

La Perla

This is a terrific area for adventure bikes and there were a lot of them.
The Spa in the lower level of La Perla includes a pool area, sauna/wet area and massage rooms. The wet area is a fairly large area and yes, like pretty much all outside of the U.S. is designated as nude and includes two saunas, a Turkish bath, Kneipp hot/cold foot walk, showers, bucket shower and lounging areas.
Entry to the sauna/wet area is through the door in the middle. Through the windows to the left we could see out to cooler air but just couldn’t get there.

The most Finnish Sauna on our trip! Benches were at a good height, the foot bench about 15 cm above the stones, and this despite a somewhat low ceiling so we didn’t have cold feet and had quite good Finnish style löyly. Note that the foot bench is just 30cm (11”) below the sitting bench which actually worked quite well.
They have two saunas, one about 75°c and one about 92°c. The only drawback was no easy way to go outside. Showers allowed for a quick cooldown after each sauna round but then there was no place cool to relax.
Adler Lodge is located in what I believe is the largest alpine meadow in the alps and an area that’s popular for both nordic and alpine skiing. Numerous national nordic teams, including the U.S. team and Jessie Diggins spend part of their season here training.

They have interesting electric fencing with micro wire woven in to the webbing. It does seem to keep most of the cows where they should be.

Throughout the South Tyrol you’ll find safe walking paths along any road that gets more than about 10 cars / hr.
The upper level of the lodge is the wet area and thermal suite and includes two relaxation sunrooms, deck, indoor/outdoor pool, and thermal suite. The thermal suite includes a Sauna, Hay Sauna, Turkish Bath, and an outdoor deck.
There was no doubt their thoughts on the entire area being quiet and calm.

Not surprisingly this was a quite good sauna. The sitting bench (highest) was sufficiently high that there were no cold feet, convective heat was quite even head to toes and there was no noticeable radiant heat. After cooling down with a shower there were a few options for a cool place to relax including the deck in the thermal suite or the larger deck by the sunrooms.

One of the more enjoyable elements here was the sauna community who are quite pleasant and enjoyable. It’s a great way to get to know people, what conversations we had were just slightly above a whisper and for me, involved about the right amount of time in conversation vs quiet time.
There were a number of us who went to sauna every day about the same time so got to know each other somewhat.
Part II: San Luis & Lake Como.
]]>Before anything else, forget all that you know about sauna in the U.S., particularly those things in gyms that people call a sauna (but maybe aren’t), but also pretty much every sauna installed and used in the U.S. The vast majority are, unfortunately, not real saunas but poor replicas (hint, if the foot bench, which is the second to highest bench, is not above the top of the stones then it’s probably not a real sauna), even if built by a company with ‘Finn’ in the name. Clear your mind about what a sauna is and how to use it. Now… you’re in for a treat – the real thing!
If you’re really anxious to just get to the sauna then skip down to ‘Going To Sauna’ (If you have time though, don’t skip down and instead read everything between here and there!)
Sauna is about contrasts. The contrast of very hot vs very cold, of inside vs outside, of calming, quiet, relaxing and rejuvenating vs our daily life. And with Finnish Saunas of low humidity vs high humidity. We cycle between sauna and daily life, and within sauna we cycle between extreme heat inside the stove room and cool or cold outside, and within the stove room of a Finnish Sauna we cycle between dry and humid.
Finns will frequently say that sauna is the second holiest place next to church (and that we should behave similarly calmly and quietly in each).
Sauna (a Finnish word pronounced ‘SOW-na’, sow rhymes with how now cow) is extremely popular throughout Scandinavia, Germany, The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, The Tyrol of Northern Italy, the Baltics and elsewhere. And perhaps not coincidentally these are also the happiest countries in the world! Finland is estimated to have 3 million saunas for 5.3 million people, about one per household. Though not as pervasive as in Scandinavia, sauna or sauna-like experiences is still quite popular throughout much of Europe, Asia and indigenous Americans.
Why sauna? Primarily for enjoyment but there are some proven health benefits that come along with it.
Sauna is enjoyable alone and is wonderful as a social activity. Time in the sauna is often a part of having friends and family over. Many people in Europe who have a sauna at home will still take time each week for a few hours at a public spa – for the broader social enjoyment and for the variety of thermal experiences.
Sauna is also kind of about intentionally doing nothing. Taking time to relax, unwind, and slow down. This kind of rejuvenation while awake provides different benefits than sleeping. Dutch have a word for this – Niksen. The concept (and command for Jews and Christians?) of Shabbat or Sabbath is about very deliberate rest and contrary to what I thought it’s not necessarily about a specific day but about a rhythm of work/rest.
It is called sauna bathing because we are fully immersed in soft convective heat and it is truly cleansing. After a round of sauna and a dip in the lake or under a shower our skin is as clean as it’ll ever be.
Finns and many others grow up with sauna bathing from about 3 months old and do so throughout their lives, typically three to five sessions per week with each session involving two to five hot/cold rounds in the sauna. Finns say that sauna is a place for physical and mental cleansing, a place to relax, meditate and socialize.
Sauna has traditionally also been quite popular in Minnesota, Michigan and Maine thanks to Scandinavian immigrants. Around Wolf Lake and Cokato MN as well as parts of the Arrowhead region north of Lake Superior you’ll find a sauna at every home, a slight majority wood burning, and most used every day. A friend of mine grew up washing (with soap and water) in a sauna every night using water heated by the sauna stove and still does to this day. His kids, ranging in age from 2 to 18, do as well.
Sauna (verb in the english speaking world, not really used as a verb elsewhere as they will instead say ‘going to the sauna’) is the practice of sitting or laying in a sauna hot room for a short period of time, typically 5-20 minutes, until you’ve been sweating for a bit, and then cooling off in a lake, shower, roll in the snow, standing outside, relaxing in a cool room or whatever you desire. …And then Repeating as often as you want.
Sauna should be physically and mentally enjoyable, relaxing, invigorating and meditative.
Sauna is not a jump in the hot room once and then go shower. It’s taking our time for an invigorating ritual of hot cold hot cold hot cold.
What Is A Sauna?
A Sauna (noun) is a wood lined room heated by stones to temperatures of about 75-105°c (167-221°f) or sometimes hotter. Sauna’s are naturally very dry heat and bathers throw water on to the stones to create bursts of steam and raise the humidity.
Finns say that the best way to heat the stones is with a wood fire – not because it makes the sauna itself better but simply because fire is relaxing and enjoyable. (When you sit down to dinner tonight, light a candle and see if dinner time is more enjoyable.)
Traditionally this was an open fire with smoke that filled the room and so the fire and smoke had to be put out before anyone could use the sauna. Today these are called Smoke Saunas or Savusaunas and are still popular. Continuous burning wood stoves with chimneys to exhaust the smoke have largely replaced the savusaunas for everyday use though.
Electric (and gas) are also popular and while perhaps not as romantic, offer some welcomed convenience like being able to pre-heat our sauna from anywhere using an iPhone. For many people though the routine of building a fire in the sauna stove is a key part of the ritual and enjoyment of sauna – it’s foreplay.
The woods chosen for use in a sauna for the walls, ceiling and benches are not only aesthetic but quite practical. They don’t get too hot to touch, the hygroscopic properties help to regulate the heat and moisture for a wonderful soft löyly and it helps to absorb noise for a quieter, more peaceful and less annoyingly echoey space.
When you enter a sauna you’ll typically step up a few steps to a wood platform. Around this platform is an 16-18” high ‘foot bench’ that should ideally be above the top of the stones. You can sit on the foot bench for cooler temps or you can step up on to the foot bench to sit or lay on the higher sitting bench for warmer temps. Some saunas may have 3 or even 4 bench levels.
When on the sitting bench you ideally want all of your body above the top of the stones – that is why the benches are so high. Finns have a saying ‘feet above the stones’ meaning that the foot bench should be above the top of the stones. When the benches are too low you’ll experience uneven heat – hotter near your head and colder near your feet and hot on your front facing the stove and cooler on your back. Being up above the stones results in a softer, more even, comfortable and enveloping heat around your entire body – what Finns call löyly.
A sauna should be located so that it’s easy to go outside each round to cool off. A separate building with a hot room and vestibule/changing/shower room is ideal but an exterior door from an interior sauna changing room works well also. One of the best parts of going to sauna is the repeating hot/cold contrast.
This is all just the technical and functional side though. A sauna should also be a room that we enjoy being in and likewise the adjoining spaces, the vestibule, changing room and shower, should be a place we desire to spend time in not just functional.
Dry Sauna? There’s really no such thing. There’s just Sauna. No dry sauna nor wet sauna. During each round there will typically be periods of dry and periods of humid or wet. And then there’s the fun of pouring a bucket of water over our head for a truly wet experience.
Löyly
Löyly (pronounced kind of like ‘l – eu -i -loo’. Almost like Lou-Lou but more nuanced.) is a special word in Finnish for the environment in a sauna. It is “the purity, freshness, temperature and humidity of the air in the sauna”.
The air in a sauna should always be fresh, not stale and the temperature about 80-105°c at bathers heads. …Or 70 or 120°c if that’s your preference. It should be pure with no excess CO2, particulate matter, chemicals such as chlorine, perfumes, detergents, mold, or cleaning products.
Bather’s bodies should be enveloped in convective heat evenly from head to toe, front to back and second to second.
The steam from the stones is a critical element of löyly and so the environment in the sauna is not considered löyly until this steam has been added. It is not unusual for people to shout ‘LÖYLY!’ when this is done (and is perhaps the only way to elicit verbiage from a Finn:-).
There is a popular saying among Finns, Swedes and others that “90% of the saunas in the U.S. are bad and the other 10% are worse” – that not a sauna in the U.S. has löyly. Sadly this is largely true and is referring to lack of proper fresh air ventilation (that results in suffocatingly high CO2 levels) and temps and benches that are too low. Once you’ve experienced proper sauna and löyly you’ll never want to go back! Fortunately U.S. saunas are starting to improve.

Finns don’t ask what the temp was, they don’t really care, they ask how the löyly was.
‘The temperature’ is actually not that important. Far more important is that the temps on bathers bodies are fairly even head to toes and front to back and minute to minute, that the air is fresh without high levels of exhaled CO2 or built up moisture, bathers are experiencing the convective loop and steam descending down on them from the ceiling and are not experiencing any noticeable radiant heat. In other words, the quality of the heat and environment. These are the elements of good löyly and what distinguish a sauna from other forms of sweat bathing.
The official recommended temperature from ISA is 80-105°c (± 15°c) (167-221°f (± 25°f)) – measured at a point 1m (39”) above the middle of the longest sitting bench opposite the heater. The ± portion is actually not part of the official definition (see below) but experts I’ve talked with including Risto Elomaa, Chair of the International Sauna Association, all agree that this bit of variation still fits within a liberal interpretation of what is a sauna.
Another way to look at it for a Finnish Sauna is that the proper temperature is one that results in someone staying in 10-15 minutes. Less than 10 minutes is perhaps too hot, more than 15-20 minutes is not hot enough.
The best temperature though is whatever you desire. If 60°c is your thing then that’s what you should do and enjoy it even if it may not officially be sauna at that temperature. I encourage you to occasionally experiment with different temps though. As you become more experienced and acclimated you may find that 82°c or 94°c is quite enjoyable.
Note that when outside humidity is high then the base humidity in the sauna might be higher than normal and so slightly lower temps might be a good idea. So while we might normally do around 96°c in our sauna, on a very humid summer day (91% RH) we find 80°c a nicer temp.
Women generally prefer lower temps than men and are often more sensitive to head to toes differences. In Finland it’s common for women to sauna first and then the sauna will be heated up a bit for those, both men and women, who want higher temps. When everyone want to be together then a temp between the two is often chosen.
Hot Feet – The foot bench should be somewhat hot. If it’s not then your feet and legs won’t be hot enough. Many people place their towel so that they sit on it and have their feet on it as well. This is not only better for reducing sweat (and required in many cultures) on the benches but protects our feet.
Another alternative is when you sit with your feet on the foot bench it can help to very briefly raise your heels and then put your heels down and very briefly raise the front of your foot. Two or three times doing this is usually sufficient for your feet to acclimate and be comfortable. If the foot bench is too hot for this to work then it is likely getting too much radiant heat from the heater.
Cold Feet / Hot Head – In a sauna with too much stratification, usually from too low of benches and ceiling, and sadly common in North America, our body will perceive temps as hotter than they are. Our body wants to be in homeostasis – equilibrium – and if our head is more than about 15-20°c warmer than our toes it will react to this temperature difference rather than to heat in general. That’s not what we want in a sauna.
Going to The Sauna
Going to the sauna should be relaxing and enjoyable and can be solitary or social. It is NOT A CONTEST. It is not a regimen to be endured (except in Germany ).
The enjoyment and health benefits of sauna come not from just sitting in the sauna but from the repetitive rounds of heating up and quickly cooling down. You sit in the sauna for the experience of quickly cooling down in a cold lake, not just for the experience of sitting in the sauna.
Many Finns will say that anything short of Hot Cold Hot Cold Hot Cold (3 rounds) is not sauna. This is the number one thing about sauna that Americans often miss. People in American gyms will get in the sauna for a bit and then take a warm shower. Or maybe do one cold plunge and then a warm shower. That’s not really sauna according to Finns and Swedes.
The hot room and time in it is actually fairly minor. Other places and elements like a dip in the lake, a walk in the snow or a shower often comprise more sauna ritual time than the hot room. You should allow at least one and ideally two to four hours or more per sauna session so that you have time to enjoy multiple rounds in a relaxing way without feeling rushed.
Sauna Etiquette
The key to etiquette is consideration for others.
1) Warm Up The Sauna:
Our sauna, like most, needs to warm up about 60-90 minutes prior to use. Ideally you want it to have been at your desired temp for at least 30 minutes so that the stones and walls have time to fully warm up. That said, I’d not let warm up time stand in the way of a sauna session.
2) Before Sauna:
Hygiene Before Heat – Or ‘first shower, then sauna’. Shower with soap before first entering the sauna and then rinse well. As my father-in-law would say “as far down as possible, as far up as possible …and possible”.
Why shower if you’re just going to get sweaty? Bacteria. Our bodies can build up a significant amount of bacteria (it’s the primary ingredient in BO). But you also want to get off any makeup, chlorine, sunscreen, cologne, dirt or other gook.
This is especially important if you have suntan lotion on or have been in a pool or hot tub. You (and your sauna mates!) want your skin and pores to be as clean as possible. You’ll not necessarily need soap after this, though some people do choose to wash with soap after their final round.
To dry or not to dry? Many Finns enter the sauna dripping wet from their shower, others have a strong belief that you should dry off first. This one I think, despite it seeming almost religious to Finns on both sides, is personal preference. I do both and I’m not sure there’s much difference. I do always dry off if I’ll be standing outside in cool/cold temps though which I often do.
Drink water! It’s a good idea to wait a couple of hours after a meal but a light snack just before sauna is fine. Many Scandinavians will drink beer or Finnish Long Drink during their sauna sessions and roasting sausages on the rocks is a sometimes Finnish tradition but these are totally optional. Be cautious of alcohol though as drunk + sauna heat is not a good thing. High CO2 that’s common in U.S. saunas makes the affects of alcohol much worse.
If you’re wearing a swim suit (sauna is typically done nude) then it should be freshly clean (ideally with non-scented detergent) and not have been in the hot tub or any other chlorine source.
ALWAYS wipe your feet well before entering the sauna to keep the benches clean.
3) In The Sauna (5-20 minutes):
Always sit on a towel, even if wearing a swimsuit.
Sauna is typically done nude but swimsuits are certainly acceptable in North America (for more: Sauna’s, Nudity and Victoria)
Stay in as long as you are comfortable and leave when you want or when jumping through a hole in the ice sounds like a really great idea. There is no magic time to spend in a sauna and it may vary from day to day. Finns and Swedes consistently say 5-20 minutes and I’ve been told by a few people to not stay in longer than 15-20. While my preference is 10-14 minutes at 94-98°c (200-210°f), I sometimes like to stay in longer with cooler 75-80°c (167-185°f) temps and sometimes 8-9 minutes at 112°c (233°f) is my thing.
If you find that you are able to stay in longer than others that may just be that you’ve more body fat and less muscle. Muscle transfers heat better than fat so someone with more muscle and less fat will heat up faster internally. And you thought being able to stay in a long time as macho
In Scandinavia children are taught “in the sauna you must be as quiet as in church”. A Finnish friend told me “Silence is Gold, Talking is Silver.” Quiet conversation is wonderful as is sitting in total silence. I love both.
Steam (the final element of Löyly)
Steam in a well designed sauna is quite wonderful as you feel it envelope your body in its caressing warmth.
Ask others before throwing water on the stones. It’s impolite to throw water on the stones and then leave or for anyone to open the door for the first minute or so after throwing water on the stones).
Some natural eucalyptus oil may be added to the water bucket – typically about 1/2 to 1 dropper full. We use only pure natural oils, I am not a fan of Rento and other scents with unnatural chemicals. Alternatively you can add some birch leaves or redcurrant.
Ovi kii or ovi perkele are special epithets in Finnish for, roughly, ‘CLOSE THE DOOR’.
3.1) Optional: Cooling In The Sauna (1 second):
There’s nothing like getting warmed up well in a sauna and then pouring a bucket of cold water over your head (or having a cute Finnish singer do it for you). Shocking for about 1 second and then wonderful enveloping warmth.
Only do this in a sauna with a proper drain though.
4) Out Cooling Down (5-60+ minutes):
Go jump in a lake! Really. No matter how cold it is. If it’s frozen we’ll cut a hole in the ice (and maybe plant a warning tree forest like my wife’s cousins Mikael and Maria do in Sweden)*.
My friend Kimmo (SaunaSherpa – check them out for a tour) notes that Finns even have a special word for a hole in the ice to go swimming in – Avanto! Not to be left out, Swedes have their own word for a swimming hole in the ice – Isvak! Kimmo adds “A slight push outside one’s comfort zone can be intimating – both in sauna, as well in avanto to get deeper sensations. For avanto first timers: enter steady, determined, stay calm, remember to breathe(!), Hardly anyone enjoys staying in the water but jumping in is worth it as bliss/euforia comes as a reward afterwards.” He also notes that some people never get fully use to it.
Feeling a bit of trepidation on your way to the lake, like this is going to be cold and I’m nuts for doing this, is a good thing. That means that you’re in for a treat. It’s indeed a bit intimidating but well worth it.
Ideally you want to preserve as much sauna warmth in your body as possible when you jump in the lake. Taking a cue from firefighters, I always hang my swimsuit with strings up so I can get in it quickly (yeah, good idea to pull a swimsuit on before heading to the lake during the day in North America) and I’ll wrap my drying towel around my shoulders for the trip down. A terry cloth robe can work well also.
Next best is a cold plunge pool. Large enough that you can easily get your whole body in quickly. Personally I’ve found 18°c (64°f) to be about ideal and this is also the temp found at most spas in Europe. If possible something about 1.25m deep. Outside (and ideally in-ground) is best in my opinion but inside works well also. Some way to freshen the water and remove sweat and bacteria is a very good idea, especially if it’s shared. A recirculating filter system or perhaps a constant slow drain and fresh water filler are options.
Or go under a cool or cold shower. You ideally want to cool off quickly. Yep, it’s a bit shocking for 2 seconds and then you feel great. If you’re a loofa person this is ideal loofa! Two to five minutes under the shower and then walking outside to dry off and finish cooling down is a wonderful experience.
When you shower after your first round you may smell some body odor. This is not sweat (sweat doesn’t smell) but bacteria in your skin that soap didn’t remove (and possibly bacteria from soap). You’ll not smell it after further rounds!
Or no water necessary. Popping outside for a bit, rolling in the snow, relaxing on a lounge chair are all options.
If it’s below about 40-50°f then you may find sandals outside to be a good thing.
If it’s below about 10°f (-13°c)… drying off before going outside is a good idea. Be careful grabbing cold metal door handles with wet hands. And yes, that is ice in your formerly wet hair.
For me personally the ideal is lake water about 40°f (4°c) and air 20-40°f (-6°c – 4°c) but almost any weather will do.
Remember to take a few deep breaths of fresh air while you’re outside.
The first round is kind of an acclimatization round. Your body is relaxing and waking up at the same time, your pores are opening. In a well designed sauna with good ventilation the subsequent rounds will get better and better with each round.
When doing any kind of a cold plunge – sea, lake, shower, tub or bucket of water – a key is immediate total immersion from head to toe.
5) Repeat:
Repeat as often as you want. Three rounds is kind of the average but two, seven or whatever is OK. Even occasionally doing just one round is fine.
Hydrate with every round. Or not. Some people believe it’s best to hydrate well before your session and then not again until after all of your rounds. Personally I think it best to drink a bunch of water with each round.
Warm up kind of slowly. While a very quick cool down is wonderful, the opposite is not so true, especially if you’ve been outside in very cool or cold temps. Spend a minute or three in the changing room letting your body warm to that temp. Then enter the hot room and spend a few seconds at the lowest level before slowly climbing up in to the heat of the löyly cavity. This gradual entry to the heat makes for a much more enjoyable sauna experience.
6) After:
After your last round there is no necessary need of soap. Just rinse off well under a cool shower and you’re as clean as you’ll ever be and much cleaner than after a typical soap shower. Many people find the feeling of totally clean and clear skin with open pores and no chemicals quite wonderful.
Most people do however prefer to use soap or shampoo afterwards. It will not remove any more sweat than just water and it will clog your pores but many of us just don’t feel clean if we’ve not used it. Some people like it just for the fragrance and some rinse with water but shampoo their hair for the shampoo fragrance. This is all personal preference.
Hydrate! Water or maybe a beer, Finnish long drink or glass of wine if you like.
This is a great time for a nap or a relaxing read. Most importantly, enjoy the blissful post-sauna feeling of having cleaned both your body and your mind.

And, given American sensibilities and judgementalism, perhaps no discussion with others about who wore what or not in the sauna.
The First Time
If this is your first time then take it easy, maybe sit on the lower bench if you want, and don’t push how long you stay in the sauna. Different people have different tolerances and the more you do it the more you’ll get to know your body and what you do and do not enjoy.
Maybe take it slow with jumping in a cold lake or under a cold shower. The shower’s easy – adjust the temp up some (about 10 o’clock on ours in the black tile shower or the one just outside on the patio). You can’t turn the temp up on the lake so I’ll take back what I said earlier about taking it slow – jump in and enjoy!
Sauna can take some getting use to. For many people it can take two to five 3-round sessions to learn to really enjoy it. People who’ve done it for decades often comment that it continues to get better and more enjoyable year after year.
Going to the sauna may differ each time. Some days we may want to do six rounds and another day decide that one round is enough for that day. And this is OK.
While from a health/medical standpoint it’s generally recommended to stay in the heat no longer than 15-20 minutes per round, it’s OK for most people to occasionally do so.
Regimen, Ritual and Grounding
This is one place where we may sometimes need to be different from Finns. Finns, Swedes, Estonians and others have a culture of going to sauna. They do it frequently and have for their entire lives. Going to sauna is embedded in their being. And perhaps most importantly, they frequently experience many different saunas and sauna rituals with friends.
Finns rarely talk among themselves about how many rounds they do or how long they stay in. They know. They are also big on freedom and ‘doing what feels good’ whatever that is. However, if you go to sauna with a Finn you will almost always do three or four rounds of 10-17 minutes in the sauna and 15-45 minutes outside cooling down. Finns say that there is no ‘average’ sauna ritual. …but there is.
These are actually quite huge benefits. And we lack them.
For Americans it’s easy to develop not so good habits (or start with them) or to forget how good proper sauna can be. This especially with our rush-to-this-rush-to-that culture. It’s good for us to occasionally plan two or three intentionally ‘average’ and relaxing sessions of three or four rounds and taking at least 30-60 minutes per round split between hot/cold and perhaps 2-4 hours overall to help stay grounded. Finns get this grounding naturally as part of their culture, we do not.
It’s Not Sweat That You Smell
How do you get rid of the smell of sweat if you don’t use soap?
The smell that we associate with sweat is not sweat but bacteria. Bacteria thrive in warm places like folds of skin or skin sweating under a swimsuit unable to breath. When you sauna and then rinse off with cool water you get rid of bacteria that soap can’t.
This is why people can ride an upright Dutch bike in hot weather and not smell offensive. Firstly they don’t sweat as much as someone who’s leaning forward and wearing a helmet because they don’t get as hot – even if they’ve been riding the same speed. The big thing though is that they’ve not given bacteria a chance to grow. Leaning forward creates skin folds and reduced cooling both of which lead to bacteria gardens.
Attire
In most countries everyone enjoys sauna together naked and nobody gives it a second thought. People sauna without clothes because it is more comfortable and more hygienic.

Individually it is more comfortable in the sauna because swimsuits or towels wrapped around us keep our skin from breathing and cooling us. This can create uneven heat across our body which isn’t so comfortable. Finns and others say that you cannot experience löyly if you are at all covered. FWIW, everyone I’ve talked to who has done both many times prefers, often strongly, nude.
Outside, exposed skin dries fairly quickly making it enjoyable to stand outside, swimsuits not so much. A wet swimsuit just isn’t comfortable, especially when it’s cold or breezy and doubly worse when dripping cold water down our legs.
The time spent out of the sauna cooling down between rounds is as important as the time spent in the sauna hot room and an uncomfortable cold wet swimsuit can make this time less enjoyable and shorten the amount of time you want to stay outside.
This also makes the routine of showering (with soap before sauna, rinsing well after or before each round in the hot room, and before getting dressed) a lot easier and more beneficial. The sweat glands that result in the most bacteria are the apocrine glands in our genitals – rinsing these areas is particularly important, for us and others, and that’s impossible when they’re covered.
There are two elements for hygiene. First is that having all of our skin exposed to air eliminates the bacteria growth that happens under swimsuits. One of the great things about sauna is that we get rid of all of this bacteria that has built up since our last sauna – and that’s good and healthy for our skin.
Why require everyone to be nude as is the case with about 97% of saunas in the world?
Cloth that is not freshly cleaned with unscented detergent can bring unappealing scents and bacteria. The smell of sweat, chlorine, bacteria or other things that swimsuits can harbor is kind of like cigarette smoke. This is why most public saunas forbid swimsuits, not just recommend not wearing them. People who are nude also tend to shower/rinse better than those who are wearing a swimsuit.
Being naked also makes us somewhat vulnerable, which is also good but it’s best and most comfortable for everyone then, particularly women, if everyone is equally vulnerable. Interestingly the people in Europe who are quickest to sound the alarm are women – they don’t want to wear a suit themselves and don’t want the discomfort of being around others who are.
Scandinavians also say that not having clothes on makes everyone more equal.
There are two semi exceptions. Outside of immediate and extended family or close friends, Finland’s default is separate male & female rather than everyone together but mixed if all agree. “Finnish families including cousins aunts and uncles all sauna together naked – as in everyone, from grandparents to tots as young as four months old.” You will however find public tourist saunas in Finland that allow or even require swimsuits.
In the U.S. and somewhat in the UK, Canada and parts of France people often wear swimsuits, though that is slowly changing.
For mixed sex public saunas in Europe there is a clear male / female difference. Most of the men and a few of the women will walk around nude while most of the women will wear a robe except when in a sauna or showering.
If there are 18 German couples in an Alpine resort, all of the men will go to sauna but only perhaps a dozen of the women and one or two of these women will keep a towel fully or partially wrapped around themselves. If 18 Finnish couples then maybe only half of the women will go to sauna. One element of this is that women can be more uncomfortable with nudity than men. As well, from conversations with a number of people, it is clear that women don’t care who sees their husband nude but some men aren’t so comfortable with other men outside of immediate/extended family seeing their wife nude.
The default for our sauna when visitors are here is everyone wearing a swimsuit or towel. However, if all agree then it may be swimsuit optional or nude required. We can also setup separate male/female/family times if people want to give it a go in private.
FWIW, we are fine with whatever and most important for us is enjoying time with family and friends. We much prefer to sauna with friends and everyone wearing suits than not sauna with friends at all.
The sunken sauna patio is fairly well protected (and will be better protected when new plants grow), especially the outdoor shower area. So there, the lower level of the house and of course in the sauna and changing/shower you are welcome to wear whatever you do or do not want. Beyond these a towel, shorts or swimsuit is a good idea. If it’s dark out then two presses on the ‘exterior’ button will turn down the outside lights and then a towel or robe is sufficient to get safely down to the lake. It’s easy to get comfortable walking around or laying in the sun in the sauna patio and then deciding to go for a dip in the lake so be thoughtful to not wander off without your suit on ?
If you wear a suit. Breathability and fast drying are important and you want to cover as little skin as you are comfortable with.
For guys; briefs (‘speedo’) are likely best but a tight fitting square leg, square cut or boxer (three names for the same thing) is a bit more modest and works well to avoid uncomfortable cold drips. Jammers are probably third best with loose trunks or board shorts the worst.
Nude but wrapped in a towel is also an option. FWIW, on the very rare occasions that Finns and Swedes wear something, they seem to be equally divided between a towel or swimsuit and for guys equally divided between tight boxers or loose trunks.
No Judgement Zone
Many people are comfortable in sauna without clothes, others are not. Some are comfortable around others who are nude, some are not. Some guys are not comfortable with other guys, particularly similar aged guys, seeing their wife nude, some aren’t bothered in the least.
NONE of these are right or wrong. Nobody should ever be judged in any way nor should anyone feel pressured to do anything they are uncomfortable with.
Jewelry & Electronics
It is generally best to remove jewelry before sauna. Some, depending on the material, can get hot and be uncomfortable. VHP’s and similar piercings that are somewhat protected do not generally seem to be a problem and other piercings depend on the material and location. The first time you sauna with a piercing it’s a good idea to keep your mind on it so that you can exit before it gets too hot.
Euro Zone
When people are using our sauna: the sauna, sauna patio and the lower level may be a Euro Zone – you may encounter naked people. Be forewarned if you’re easily offended.
Sauna is generally safe for all people of all ages. Many people in Finland begin going to sauna as a baby and continue for their entire lives. And, even temps as high as 140°c (284°f) appear completely safe (though recommended temps are 75-105°c).
If you have any concerns about going to sauna then you should talk to your GP. This particularly if you are overweight, obese, sedentary, pregnant or have any cardiovascular conditions or high blood pressure. It’s likely completely safe for you but some caution isn’t a bad idea.
Going to sauna places increased stress on our cardiovascular and other systems. This is good but can be risky for people who are not already fit. If you are overweight or sedentary then it might be good to incorporate some lifestyle changes such as moderate activity each day and eating more wisely before beginning a regular sauna routine.
Cold Water vs Ears – Repeated or continued exposure of ears to cold water can lead to surfer’s ear, medically known as external auditory canal exostoses (EACE) or just exostoses. I’ve been unsuccessful in determining what dose is risky but know that it’s common among folks who swim, surf or dive (SCUBA, etc.) in colder water. Something to be cautious of. That said, if the water isn’t too cold then I’m a fan of full immersion – there’s really nothing like it that’s legal :-).
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU BELIEVE – There are a lot of claims about this or that health benefit from sauna. Many of these claims are based on junk science, lack of understanding of human physiology, or are outright lies to promote or sell saunas, IR booths and other things.
There are a lot of myths about sauna in the U.S. compliments of deceptive marketing by sauna companies. This is particularly a problem with IR booths (which are not actually sauna). The two big ones are weight loss and sweating out toxins:
1) Sauna does not cause weight loss. You’ll loose some water weight and maybe a calorie or two from a higher heart rate but that’s about it. And you should also drink enough water (or beer or longdrink) to make up for that.
Some people report that their sport watch says that they burned xxx calories in the sauna. The problem is that the sport watch is measuring heart rate and it’s assuming that the higher heart rate is caused by physical muscular activity which would indeed cause calorie burn. But in this case our higher heart rate is caused by heat, NOT by physical muscular activity. If Apple and Garmin had an activity called ‘Sauna’ then it would indicate little beyond normal metabolic burn.
In a podcast recently Dr Peter Attai noted that in measuring lactate levels while in the sauna that he did not even reach zone 2 (which is an extremely low caloric burn), much less anything higher where measurable calorie burn takes place.
2) As far as I know there is no real thing as sweating out toxins – not in a sauna nor steam room nor IR booth nor anything. Sweat is water and salt. And a very tiny bit of minerals. That’s it. Your liver and kidneys deal w/ mineral based toxins, they are simply ancillary in sweat and the amounts no more than a rounding error.
Sweating in a sauna can sweat out gook in your skin though. Bacteria and soap scum the primary elements for most people but also potentially the embedded particulate matter from things like spray painting or firefighting. It’s critical to have proper ventilation.
If you use mineral based sunblock which can be very tough to wash off, a round or two in the sauna AFTER a good soap shower will get some or most of what soap doesn’t.
First, sauna should be totally enjoyable. It should not be uncomfortable drudgery done purely for health benefits. If it’s not enjoyable then it is likely because the sauna does not have proper ventilation or proper heat so if you’re not enjoying it then find a real sauna. That said, there is a bit of acclimation necessary both for those new to sauna and to some extent with each sauna session. In a well-built sauna with proper ventilation and heat the first round is often a bit of a acclimation round and not quite as enjoyable as subsequent rounds that often get better and better with each round.
Finns frequently say that they never sauna for any reason. They don’t sauna for health benefits but only for enjoyment. The health benefits are just a side bonus. And that’s all very true. HOWEVER, I personally think it’s totally fine to go to sauna for the health benefits. Importantly, enjoyment is one of the key health benefits. If it’s not totally enjoyable then you likely need a better sauna with proper bench and ceiling heights, ample volume per bather, air gaps in and behind the benches, and other bits that make a good sauna a good sauna.
Proper ventilation is critical. Lack of proper ventilation, common in U.S. saunas, results in high ambient CO2 levels and so high blood CO2 thus negating some of the potential health benefits and potentially causing harm.
Perspective – In the overall scheme of things the health benefits of sauna are not particularly great and will likely not make up for lacking in other areas. Staying physically & mentally active and eating well are of far greater importance. Riding a bicycle for local transportation will provide perhaps 15-20x the benefit of sauna. So while there are indeed likely health benefits to sauna, keep their contribution to your wellbeing in perspective. As well, most of the studies have been on populations in Finland who lead a much healthier lifestyle than Americans. They live five years longer but more importantly have many fewer disability years so they may benefit more from sauna than a typical sedentary American.

There are a number of studied and proven health benefits to sauna. Some of these benefits are believed to come from the cycling of hot/cold/hot/cold/hot/cold – contrast therapy. Others from sweating, and others from relaxing heat. Potential health benefits include:

Laukkanen M.D., an internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases specialist, also observed that heart and cardiovascular disease mortality decreased as the number of minutes spent in the sauna increased: There were half as many deaths among those who spent more than 45 minutes a week in the sauna than among those who spent less than 15 minutes in the sauna.”
“Men who took four to seven saunas a week had a 66 percent smaller risk of a dementia diagnosis than those who sweated it out once a week.”

Some important caveats (so your results will likely vary):
Gym Saunas – EVERY gym sauna that I’ve been to in North America (and the UK) has had noticeably poor air quality and quite high stratification. These are not only not as enjoyable as a real sauna but likely offer no health benefits and likely do more harm than good. Personally I’d stay out of them.
A Word Of Caution – As time goes on we learn more and more about the world around us and our own physiology and neurobiology. We learn about what is good, not so good and downright bad. What we’ve learned about Oxytocin over just the past 5 to 10 years borders on astounding for example. Over the past 5 years we’ve learned that what we thought we knew for decades about lactic acid likely isn’t really so. And then of course we’ve learned a lot about CO2 and Indoor Air Quality over the past 5-20 years.
We are learning a lot currently about contrast therapy, both hot+cold bath and sauna+cold bath as well as cold therapy alone. I’m a fan of these. There’s good science to back up much of what we’re learning. But we’ve still much more to learn than we already know.
Many people, particularly bloggers and podcasters, get out ahead of the science and too often without any caveats. They too often say what will get them PR and paying members rather than what is accurate. Be careful what you believe. Including from people like Dr. Rhonda Patrick (FoundMyFitness) who has some very good information but also some misleading information.
* Some or many of the health benefits may not be realized in American saunas with poor quality heat and poor ventilation. Similarly, poor ventilation and large head to toe temperature differences, both common in American saunas, may have negative health consequences.
The healthiest people in the world do not, as far as I know, ever go to sauna nor do any kind of thermal therapy – hot, cold, contrast or anything. They stay active with things like bicycling for their local transportation, eating wisely, and other bits that result in an overall healthy lifestyle.
So, while there may be some health benefits to sauna, there are other things vastly more important to a healthy life. If you’ve not already I highly recommend reading Dan Buettner’s ‘The Blue Zones: Lessons For Living Longer’.
While a sauna round or three after a workout may feel great, it may not be beneficial in typical U.S. gym saunas. Things to consider:
Many, and perhaps all, of the benefits of post workout sauna are likely from the hot/cold contrast, not from just the sauna heat itself. Sauna alone may actually do more harm than good as it will cause inflammation and non-beneficial stress while hot/cold contrast appears to improve ventilation (intake of O2 and exhaust of CO2) and blood flow that leads to faster and better recovery and healing.
However, just as with contrast hydrotherapy, we don’t yet have very good data beyond anecdotal. There is also some evidence that post workout contrast therapy may aid recovery but reduce building of muscle so if gaining muscle is your goal then sauna or contrast therapy may not be the thing.
Many athletes report faster recovery and less likelihood of severe DOMS when workouts are followed by a 3 round sauna session. Some studies may indicate that cold hydrotherapy or cryotherapy may work almost as well (having done both, I’ll take the sauna!). The contrast therapy from multiple hot/cold sauna rounds appear to reduce lactic acid that’s built up during a workout or sporting event. So does cryotherapy, though sauna MAY be more effective.
Proper ventilation is critical. Too much CO2 (above about 550-700 ppm) in the sauna hot room will result in too high of blood CO2 which will hamper your body’s ability to recover. For this reason, going to a typical U.S. sauna with poor ventilation likely does more harm than good. Some good information on this is now publicly available here and in particular the article ‘Elevated CO2 Levels Delay Skeletal Muscle Repair by Increasing Fatty Acid Oxidation’. BTW, this applies to your gym as well. You can do a harder workout and get more benefit if CO2 levels are kept below about 700 ppm.
Stratification and Cold Feet. To get benefit from sauna you need to be heated evenly over your entire body. Most U.S. gym saunas have too low of benches so there is often a 60°c or greater head to toe difference (you want no more than about a 20°c head to toe difference). Your head is hot, your abdomen is warm (relative to your head) and your legs are cool (again, relative to your head). This can actually hurt recovery rather than help.

Where I’ve personally found it most beneficial is after weight days. My routine is Mon/Wed/Fri are weights and Tue/Thu/Sat are cardio (usually rowing, bicycle or nordic skiing). Post weight day workout I’ll typically do 3 rounds though it sometimes varies from one to five. Each round is 10-15 minutes in the sauna (usually about 203°f) followed by cooldown (jump in lake summer or winter, or cold shower and then outside for a bit in winter if there’s no hole in the ice). I usually lay down for the first half of the first round and then sit but that’s purely personal preference.
I do think that I notice a difference when I do and do not go to sauna afterwards. Whether there is actually a difference or just a difference in my head I don’t know.
If you like a post workout protein shake it may be a good idea to start it a bit earlier and drink it slowly over 15-20 minutes so that by the time you begin your sauna rounds it’s not all just sitting in your stomach which can be less than fun when you hit the first cold part.
Dr. Rhonda Patrick and Joe Rogan are known for promoting sauna use with workouts which is good. They have both also shown a lack of understanding of sauna (surprising for Patrick) and of how the health benefits work. Or perhaps they both just say what they believe will sell and get them listeners and paying members rather than honest info. FWIW, most Finns I know do not regard either of them very highly for their sauna knowledge. I would take anything they say with a giant grain of salt.
Sauna after a long days work has the benefits of helping us to relax mentally and physically, likely helps with muscle recovery and is enjoyable.
There’s one other benefit though – cleanliness. There’s no such thing as sweating out toxins, but we can sweat out some of the gook in or on our skin. Along with this, and similar to aiding muscle recovery, we may begin tomorrow with cleaner pores which may allow us to sweat easier and thus remain cooler on a hot day.
Not likely in a sauna but possibly in an IR booth.
Every heat source (and really everything) in the world emits EMF, including every light bulb and every surface in your home. And each of us. And sauna heaters. Here’s an image of the EMF spectrum.
Whether the EMF emitted from a sauna heater is harmful or not we kind of really don’t know as we’re still learning about physiology and how our bodies and the world around us interact.
What we do know is that well done studies (above) have indicated that people who sauna (room heated by stones) frequently tend to have fewer health problems (particularly heart ailments and dementia), live longer and show no obvious adverse effects compared to those who sauna less frequently or not at all. So if EMF is causing some harm then the benefits of sauna appear to outweigh any harm.
FWIW, I’m far more concerned about particulate matter (PM1.0, PM2.5, etc.) in a sauna than EMF.
IR Booths might be a greater EMF concern for a number of reasons but we don’t really know for sure. Unfortunately we also don’t have the health studies as we do for sauna. Any harm likely comes from dosage being built up slowly over time and it will vary by unit and the individuals using it. Not unlike getting skin cancer from being in the sun or a tanning bed – except slower. It could be that for a particular IR Booth and individual a total of 20 hrs of total lifetime exposure does little or no harm, 60 hrs total does minimal and 200 hrs does considerable harm. A different unit might be 2x or 3x those dosages. Or none cause any significant harm with less than 500 hrs. We don’t know.
Don’t believe anyone who states that there is no risk or minimal risk because again, we don’t know and will not know until some long-term studies can provide solid data one way or the other.
I was originally taught to somewhat slowly ladle water on to the stones so as not to ‘kill the stones’. Then some other Finns told me to just throw it on. And recently Kimmo mentioned again ladling rather than throwing. So what’s a person to do?
Throwing ladle fulls of water quickly on to the stones creates a faster burst of steam.
Or, to quote Kimmo: “Water is often thrown but I prefer pouring to get longer, less aggressive löyly. And in case of massive stone capacity water can be poured to one spot to reach lower hotter rocks. When throwing on top rocks they might cool down and take some time until heat is transferred from lower rocks.”
What Europeans Wish Americans Knew.
Flatulance is normal.
Erections and reverse (including, to a few peoples horror, the full retreat) are normal, especially in response to heat/cold of sauna.
Talking quietly is OK.
Sitting with other people in total silence is OK. As is healthy debate and discussion.
Yes, people come in all shapes and sizes with all kinds of attachments and decorations and that too is normal.
Variations On A Theme
Sweden – Sauna is called ‘bastu’ and Swedes have a reputation for drinking liquor in the sauna instead of the beer or long drink that Finns enjoy.
Germany (and Austria, Switzerland, Northern Italy, Netherlands, Czechia) – Germans are well known for four things; a strong smell of aromatherapy or infusions, regimented obedience to sand clocks for how long to stay in, hygiene being critical so bathers are required to be textile-free and place a towel under their feet, and with Aufgus a sauna master who is the only one allowed to throw water on the stones.
Germans actually have kind of four varieties of sauna. First is a sauna that is very similar to saunas in Finland with the primary difference being their routine with aromatherapy and sand clocks. These are largely in private residences and spas. Similar to Aufguss these will occasionally have lower benches (though this is less and less common with newer all having higher benches) with the expectation that bathers will fan heat and steam down themselves.
Next is Aufguss. These are built different than a Finnish Sauna. They’re often partial performance space (a theatre) for the Aufguss master and part of the ritual is the Aufguss master fanning heat and steam down from the ceiling – so they actually want the benches down lower. This is often also the case with a less formal Aufguss ritual where anyone in the sauna can perform the fanning with a regular towel (but make sure you know the rules before jumping up and doing it!). Bio-Saunas (and Bio-Infusion-Saunas) have become quite popular and hay saunas are cropping up more and more often.
And fourth are the Themed Saunas, Sauna Worlds and Spas that are popular throughout much of Europe and spreading elsewhere. One example is Badeparadies Schwarzwald with 12 themed saunas and various mineral pools in their Palais Vital that is part of a larger waterpark. Thermé Erding in Germany, The Well in Norway, AquaWorld in Hungary and dozens more. I have been advising a group who are planning to build one in the U.S. patterned after Thermé Wien in Austria.
Germans generally prefer a more lingering steam compared to Finns and Germans are sticklers for hygiene including that bathers must be textile-free and place a towel under their feet. You are also more likely to find cold plunge pools in Germanic areas vs Finland.
Denmark, Hungary, Croatia & Slovenia – These are somewhat similar to the Germanics above and could perhaps be included with them except that you are more likely to find a not so good sauna here among the good ones.
Many countries can be very strict about no swimsuits or clothes in saunas. Finns will be polite while eyeing the offender, Swedes will quietly say something while Germans will simply forbid entry or point and yell ‘Aus!’.
Spas & Sauna Worlds – Are popular throughout much of Europe. These often include at least one and often several saunas, steam baths, tepidarium, pools of various temps including cold plunge, salt grottos, relaxation rooms and treatment rooms. Saunas in these are usually well designed. The primary difference is that a sauna world is simply much larger than a spa. These are sometimes divided in to ‘Germanic’ and ‘Nordic’ though often there is little to no difference. Germanic require all bathers to be textile-free while Nordic, particularly in Norway, may allow textiles. Nordic are somewhat more likely to have simpler natural foods.
FWIW, I’m a fan of these and the variety they offer. As much as I like true Finnish Sauna I also enjoy steam baths, aufguss, some of the varieties of infusions and other thermal experiences. That said, my preference is towards the lower key places like those developed by VAMED rather than the Carnival Cruise environments developed by Thermégroup.
Other Thermal Experiences
Sauna is but one form of Thermal Experience. Following are some others. None of these are necessarily better or worse than the others nor than sauna, just different. Here’s a taxonomy of various thermal experiences.
What distinguishes sauna from other forms of sweat bathing and what’s made it so popular in Europe is an experience of convective heat with no or extremely minimal radiant and very little stratification. A Banya has a bit more radiant. Sweat Cabin’s have more radiant still and less convection while IR Booths are almost pure radiant.
While I prefer a true sauna, as it is known to Finns in Finland, I still enjoy some of these other similar experiences occasionally. Sticky Toffee Pudding, Banofee Pie and Peach Cobbler are three very different foods but I still love all three. I would never try to sell someone Sticky Toffee Pudding and call it Peach Cobbler though. Note: It has taken some bit of work to figure out what’s what with these, particularly Banya. I think I’m getting there but would appreciate any thoughts on making this more accurate.
Russian Banya – Banya’s generally sit kind of in the middle between Finnish Saunas and IR Booths. They look somewhat like saunas but there are some critical differences. There are three different types of Banya; Traditional, Modern and Hot.
The hot room or ‘Parilka’ in Russian Banya’s do not have the löyly that Finns value so much. Parilka’s are more constant humidity vs the contrast of dry with bursts of steam in a Finnish Sauna and Parilka’s don’t have the more even convective heat löyly pocket of saunas. While the key goal in a sauna is for there to be no noticeable harsh or point source radiant heat, there can be considerable radiant in a Banya where the very large floor to ceiling oven produces a large though also somewhat even, milder and more comfortable radiant than a smaller oven or stove.
Due to the radiant heat Banyas may have only two bench levels compared to the higher benches critical for a sauna.
Traditional Russian Banya ‘ovens’ (above) are typically much larger and more enclosed than a sauna stove and also function somewhat similarly to a steam generator than the open convective dryer heat of a sauna stove that you throw water on for temporary humidity. The very large stone surface that’s producing radiant heat is able to produce a ‘softer’ radiant that is more even on bathers since it is less point-source than a smaller stove and because of the size of the radiant surface the radiant heat dissipates much slower so a moderate amount of radiant produced by the oven can be felt more evenly by bathers.
There is also a smaller electric Modern Banya oven that can look somewhat similar to a sauna stove but differs in several ways including usually having heavy stone slabs for the carcass and an interior water reservoir that constantly drips water on to the stones (and typically on only the lower stones). These may also have a pot of water hanging over the stones that constantly drips water on the upper stones to help maintain the humidity. Many Russians say that these are very inferior to the larger traditional ovens because the radiant heat and steam are more harsh and not as even. Builders will often do floor to ceiling stone slabs on the walls behind these to help provide somewhat more even radiant to sort of emulate a larger traditional Banya oven.
Banya is traditionally lower temp (65°c ± 15°c / 131°f ± 27°f ) + higher and more constant humidity (30-70% RH) than a Sauna. There is also a Hot Banya experience that is quite high temps, about 140°c, and very low to nearly no humidity. And then some Russians will treat their Parilka somewhat like a Sauna with lower humidity and temps around 80-105°c though a major difference is that the oven in these is producing more radiant heat than would a sauna stove.
Banya includes Parenie thermal massage as an essential element, typically by a masseuse using a venik of birch, oak or eucalyptus. Using a venik is optional and less formal with sauna and often done by the bather themselves or whoever is sitting next to them. While saunas in Finland nearly always include a changing room, I’m told that having three rooms (steam or ‘parilka’, washing or ‘moyka’ and the critical ‘predbannik’ for relaxing) is essential to Banya.
Interestingly Russians will often say that Banya is just like Finnish Sauna while Finns say, rightly, that it is very different.
Sweat Lodge or Temazcal– These are common among many Indigenous Americans and seem somewhat similar to a Finnish Smoke Sauna except that typically the stones are heated outside and then carried in to the tent. Sweat lodges are more radiant heat vs the convective heat of a sauna. Sweat Lodges are also a spiritual ritual for many Indigenous Americans.
Sweat Cabin – These are heated by heavy steel stoves such as those from Kuuma, Nippa and others. Many in North America call these a sauna, though they are actually quite different. These are kind of a hybrid of a Sweat Lodge, Russian Banya and IR Cabin. They have radiant heat from a heavy steel stove rather than the convective heat and convective loop of a sauna. These generally do not have the löyly cavity that a sauna has. They will usually have lower ceilings and benches since with the radiant heat there is less benefit to higher as there is for a Sauna with convective heat. In practice bathers will typically use them like a Finnish Sauna by throwing water on the stones to increase humidity. In this they are perhaps similar to a Modern Banya though with harsher and less even radiant heat and less convective heat.
Turkish Bath / Steam Room / Steam Shower – Lower temperature (40°c ± 5°c / 105°f ± 9°f ) and very high humidity of 90-100%. Rather than the wood walls of a Sauna the walls of a Turkish Bath are typically tile or stone and the rooms are likely to be larger. Turkish Baths are less tranquil and intimate than Sauna. Turkish Baths do have a number of health benefits, some overlapping with Sauna. There is higher risk of bacterial transmission in a Turkish Bath so hygiene of bathers and the facility is critical.
A steam unit can be added to an enclosed shower to create a psuedo Turkish Bath.
It’s not unusual for someone to have both a sauna and a steam room or steam shower though these are separate rooms as they are designed very differently.
Hamman – A more formal proscribed ritual done in a larger multi-room facility that often includes a Sauna, Turkish Bath and other elements.
Roman Bath / Roman-Irish Bath – Somewhat similar to a Hamman. Generally the best is considered to be Friedrichsbad Spa in Baden-Baden Germany with their 17 step process.
Infrared Cabin / Booth – This is not sauna despite the misappropriation of the name in the U.S. and is a very different experience than sauna despite what marketing people say. Most people who have experienced both usually have a preference, often strong, for sauna. There are two flavors of IR; Far Infrared or FIR and Near Infrared or NIR. Each is a bit different from a comfort/enjoyment standpoint.
Both FIR and NIR include potential health benefits though the lists of benefits differ for NIR, FIR and Sauna. One studied benefit is using FIR for Waon Therapy to improve respiratory function for people with COPD. Other health benefits are being studied so as time goes on we’ll know more. There are some health concerns with IR such as EMF exposure though similar to the benefits these have not yet been studied enough to know if they are real or imagined.
Ozone Cabin – Similar to IR Cabins these are not saunas in any way except the misappropriation of the name and are also usually not a thermal experience.
Hot Springs, Onsen, Hot Tubs, Salt Baths and Mud Baths are other more liquid forms for thermal experiences. For the ultimate hot springs and mud baths experience spend a week in Bormio Italy. You can hike to mountain huts for lunch during the day and then enjoy a hot spring, mud bath or sauna in the evening before having a wonderful dinner. The Onsens of Japan (there are three varieties; rotenburo, utaseyu, and konyoku) are something everyone should experience once in their life.

Sauna bath – Saunaing is a healthy and relaxing hot air bath, alternating between warming up and cooling off. When taking a sauna, the whole body is heated several times in a wooden-surface room with a typical temperature of about 80-105 º C, measured from a height of about 100 cm above the level of the upper sitting bench. Warming is followed by cooling in the open air or with cold water.

Anyone and everyone who is building or buying a sauna should read Lassi Liikkanen’s ‘Secrets Of Finnish Sauna Design’. I’ve read over 20 books on sauna – this is the most accurate and most informative book available.
Other books largely have dated or inaccurate information from a design standpoint but may have useful ideas on sauna routines, ideas for aesthetics or provide some interesting historical context. Books by Alan Konya, Sakari Pälsi, and H. J. Viherjuuri fit this latter area.
‘Finnish Sauna: Design and Construction’ was the go-to book for accuracy prior to Lassi’s.
I cannot attest to the accuracy but overall seem good.

Note: While much of this is applicable to all saunas regardless of heat source, some of the following is focused on electric heated saunas. Wood fire saunas function a bit differently and need somewhat different and potentially greater ventilation. Designing ventilation to attain healthy air and a healthy CO2 level for bathers is applicable to all saunas.

Bad Air
If you put a plastic bag on your head and pull it tight around your neck, what will happen? After a few seconds you’ll start to feel a bit of confusion, then you’ll find it difficult to concentrate, you may feel dizzy or lightheaded, you’ll begin feeling like you’re suffocating (you are), you’ll pass out and eventually die.
What about something a bit larger? Perhaps being in a sealed up 6’x4’x3’ clear plastic box with a good book. Same as above except it will take a bit longer for our trip to heaven.
And a poorly ventilated sauna?
Those things we experienced above; the loss of our ability to think clearly, the feeling of suffocation, dizziness – are not due to lack of oxygen but too much CO2. It is too much CO2 in our blood that signals our autonomic nerve system to cause us to take a breath. We do need oxygen as well, but there is a huge amount of oxygen in the air so we nearly always get an abundance of oxygen with every breath. It’s getting rid of excess CO2 that’s the driver. (People in a sealed room will die from too high of CO2 levels before low O2 levels will begin to cause any negative effect.)
When we breathe in the partial pressure of O2 (pO2) in the air is greater than the pO2 in our blood and so O2 is transferred from the air to our blood. Similarly, going the other way, the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in our blood is greater than that of the air so a bunch of CO2 passes from our blood to the air and is exhaled. The greater the pressure differential, the greater the amount of CO2 transferred with each breath and the lower the pressure differential, the less CO2 transferred per breath. Similarly, at high altitudes the percentage of oxygen is actually the same as at lower altitudes, it’s the lower partial pressure of it that causes us to get less per breath.
Our body likes to maintain a blood CO2 level of about 23 to 29 mEq/L (the actual amount isn’t important here but I wanted to provide some context). As CO2 exceeds that range we begin to experience physical and mental problems such as loss of our ability to concentrate or control our muscles and eventually we’ll begin to feel light-headed or nauseous. So, we want it to stay in that range.
Fresh outside air is comprised of 20.96% O2 and just 0.038% CO2 which is often expressed as 380 parts per million or ppm. (CO2 was once below 300 ppm based on analysis of glacial air pockets.)
We breathe in, a bunch of CO2 gets transferred from our blood to the air in our lungs and exhaled (and dispersed, taken up by plants, converted to O2, lather rinse repeat – a very very cool system). If all is going well the CO2 in our exhaled breath is 40,000-60,000 ppm – about 100x that fresh air we sucked in. The air we exhale then is now about 15.4% oxygen, but 5.6% CO2 (my actual). We’re getting rid of a lot of CO2 with each breath. And that CO2 is going in to the sauna… And then where?
If the air we breathe in has more than 380 ppm of CO2 (higher partial pressure) then there is less of a pressure differential to our blood so less CO2 from our blood gets transferred with each breath and our blood CO2 level rises. If the CO2 levels in a sauna (or gym, classroom, bedroom or wherever) are too high then we have more difficulty eliminating excess CO2 from our blood resulting in our brain and body not functioning so well. The following chart provides some idea of what we generally experience with what levels of CO2 in the air for lower levels of CO2.
Our physical and mental abilities likely begin to decline somewhat with any ambient level over 400 ppm but we don’t really see noticeable or measurable effects until higher levels. We begin to notice cognitive impairment at about 550 ppm, decreased athletic performance at about 600 and declining motor skills at 800. Sleep quality may begin to measurably decline at 500. If you have a typical poorly ventilated U.S. sauna then at the end of your last round try threading a needle as soon as you get out (this usually becomes more difficult at about 2400 ppm).
We are still learning about CO2. For a long time it was not considered worthy of study. Twenty years ago it was of no concern for levels as high as 10,000 ppm. Six years ago we began getting some of the first research data on cognitive impairment. Today we know that an increase to just 550 ppm has a negative affect on us. And knowing how CO2 affects cognitive ability, companies with knowledge workers are investing considerable amounts to provide fresher air.
Except for most cases of death, these effects appear temporary and so perhaps of little concern other than discomfort during our sauna. However, we do not know what the long term affects of higher CO2 exposure may really be. (We do however know that people who sauna often in well ventilated saunas are healthier, less likely to suffer cardio problems or dementia and live longer.)
A poorly ventilated sauna is in this respect no different than a bag tied around our neck. If stale exhaled CO2 laden air is not removed and replenished by fresh outside air then CO2 levels (and potentially the levels of a variety of VOC’s) will rise and our blood CO2 will rise along with it. Our sauna needs to breath just as we do. It is in effect an extension of our own respiratory system.
That 6’x4’x3’ clear plastic box we’re sealed up in above? That’s how much space each person has in an average sauna.
Our first and primary ventilation goal then is removal of excess CO2 along with insuring a supply of clean healthy air.
Women, Men, Respiration and Bad Ventilation
As blood CO2 increases (because of lactate in our body or high levels of environmental CO2 that reduce our lungs ability to expel CO2), our bodies respond by increasing respiration to exhaust it. Women and men respond differently though. A man’s body first increases tidal volume (bigger/deeper breaths) while women increase respiratory rate (faster breathing / more breaths per minute). However, a big chunk of each breath we take is dead space, it’s not really doing anything, so increasing our rate of breathing is not as effective as bigger/deeper breaths for exhausting the CO2 that our body desperately wants to get rid of.
This is why athletes focus on breathing – ridding our body of CO2 is critical to mental and physical performance and we want to do so as effectively and efficiently as possible.
Importantly, this respiratory difference is not something lacking in women. It’s a necessary element for two things that are lacking in men; 1) Oxytocin, pair-bonds and how these bond a woman to a single mate and to her children*, and 2) Her ability to bear children.
The practical takeaway for us is that good ventilation is much more important for women than for men. Poor ventilation resulting in high levels of CO2 will cause both men and women to feel uncomfortable (suffocating feeling) and leave a sauna before gaining benefit from the heat but this will often happen much quicker in women.
If women want to leave the sauna before men this might be an indicator of poor ventilation.
Löyly
Löyly (pronounced low-lou) is not just the steam rising from the rocks as many in North America believe but is a combination of several critical elements.

For Finn’s, and anyone in Scandinavia, Löyly is sauna. And proper ventilation is a core element of Löyly. No proper ventilation, no Löyly, not sauna.
And as we saw above, for good reason.
That 1988 paper went on to say “The purity of the sauna air is above all a factor contributing to the enjoyment of the bathing experience. The sauna air must not contain any obnoxious extent gaseous impurities, particles, or micro-organisms. The purity of the sauna air is ensured primarily by effective ventilation.”
Today we know a lot more about CO2 and why proper ventilation is so critical to the enjoyment of sauna. But we also know that proper ventilation may be much more important than just the enjoyment part of sauna. And this not just for CO2 but for other impurities such as mold or bacteria that need to be dealt with as well as particulate matter (PM2.5, etc). Proper ventilation is key to good sauna and this is exceedingly obvious if you read much about sauna in Finland or talk to anyone in Finland about sauna – they will always mention proper ventilation.
Steam added to stale air is just that – steam added to stale air. It is not löyly. However, if you have a foundation of good fresh air that is not stale from too much CO2, that is free of perfumes, perspiration odors and other impurities and is of the proper temperature then when you add steam produced from ladling water on the stones you have löyly.
When people in a sauna shout LÖYLY as the steam is produced it is not for the steam itself but because the steam added to the other elements of fresh pure air of proper temperature creates löyly.
U.S. Saunas Are Not Sauna.
What most people in North America experience is not sauna but a warm room with bad air.

There are three areas where U.S. sauna’s seem to consistently fail:
Ventilation: My guess is that most people in the U.S. leave a sauna not because they’ve had enough heat and löyly nor benefited from heat and löyly, but because they’re beginning to feel like they’re suffocating from high CO2 levels – and mistaking that for heat exhaustion. Little or none of the enjoyable or health benefits, no löyly, and all of the bad of being closed up in a tiny room of stale air. That is not a very enjoyable experience.
Overall Temperature: The Finnish Sauna Society recommends temps of 85-100°c at the bathers heads and at least 65°c at their feet – for health, enjoyment and hygiene. To insure this they often place thermostats for electric sauna heaters where they will best approximate the temp at users heads – typically on a wall 12” below the ceiling and 12-20” to the right or left of the heater.
Someone at Underwriter’s Laboratories in the U.S. appears to have decided that the highest temp for U.S. saunas is to be 90°c – and not at bathers heads but at the hottest point (3” below the ceiling directly over the heater). The result is maximums of 70-80°c at bather’s heads and 35-70°c at the foot (lower) bench. These temps are much lower than recommended for health and enjoyment. Most concerning though is that these temps are too low to provide for very critical hygiene. Saunas are breading grounds for mold and bacteria, the high heat and resulting low humidity is needed to kill them. The bad air we experience in the U.S. is not just suffocatingly high CO2 but mold and bacteria allowed to grow because of limitations on proper temperatures. Lower temps also cause people to stay in longer and so exacerbate our already bad CO2 problems. In their ignorance of sauna, this person at UL is likely making our saunas actually less safe and less healthy.
Too hot is not good either. Finns I’ve talked seem to universally think that about 105-115°c is the hottest a sauna bather should experience and that much above this is only discomfort and health risks for no benefit. They also shun any bragging about this high temp or that high humidity and are not shy about expressing their love for enjoying lower temps below 85°c. Sauna is for enjoyment not bragging and record setting.
Some people, Russians in particular, do sauna at temps as high as 135°c though this is with lower humidity levels.
Temperature Variation: Sauna should feel about the same temp from head to toe and front to back and all around. You should feel even enveloping heat equally on all portions of your body. Traditionally this is accomplished by having the foot bench, and thus the bathers entire body, at or slightly above the top of the stones, the sitting bench then about 18” above that and the ceiling then about 40-48” above that. This accomplishes two critical things; 1) The vertical temperature differentials are much less above the top of the stones (12°c in mine) than below (39°c in mine) and 2) eliminates the problem of direct radiant heat from the heater that makes those portions of our body facing the heater much hotter than those facing away which is quite uncomfortable.
Being above the top of the stones generally results in a more even, enveloping and comfortable heat.
Better ventilation strategies such as fresh air supply above the heater with mechanized exhaust below the benches are also improving on this though even with this proper bench heights are still required.

A major sauna manufacturer wanted me to build just such a warm room with bad air. I and my dealer (thanks Devin and Jey) had to fight them every step of the way as they wanted the ceiling no more than 7’, benches too low, overall temps too low and a ventilation system that doesn’t ventilate well resulting in high levels of CO2.
But it’s not just this one manufacturer. These problems are pervasive throughout North America. Many people in North America build saunas with zero ventilation and the rest with poor ventilation.
Do we want a Finnish Sauna or American warm room with bad air? I think that for most people in the US experiencing real lõyly, good pure sauna air, and true enveloping heat for the first time will be a revelation.
A Reference Point
One problem we face in North America is that good information on sauna is difficult to come by. Not just how to build a sauna or how to take a sauna but what sauna is and what sauna should be or feel like.
Much of the knowledge of how to build a good sauna, how it should feel and how to ventilate it is contained in the heads and experience of people who build saunas – in Europe. For many it’s knowledge passed down to them from those who came before and it’s a lifetime of experiencing proper sauna embedded deep within them. They know bad sauna air when they breath it. There is little written about how to do it properly and much of that is in Finnish, Swedish and German (I’ve become intimately familiar w/ translate apps). Unless you talk to these knowledgeable people directly and really, unless they build your sauna for you (because there are a lot of details to get it right), it is extremely difficult to do it right here.
This is compounded by changes to how saunas are built. Historically sauna’s were quite leaky and breathed well on their own. Just like with our houses though, sauna’s today are much more tightly sealed up than ever before and with that we’ve sealed out a lot of natural ventilation and löyly. Planned ventilation is more important than ever before. And this is perhaps compounded further by the U.S. being behind on building/space ventilation in general.
And made worse by diagrams on the internet that show hoped for airflows that are simply impossible with actual physics.
And worse yet – our being unfamiliar with what true sauna should feel like. Our lack of a reference point embedded deep in us from a lifetime of real sauna. We think we’re experiencing sauna… Until we do.

Those who’ve only experienced sauna in North America think that’s it. That’s their reference point. They think that the feeling of suffocation they experienced is the heat. They think it’s normal. But it’s not. It’s not normal and it’s not the heat. And they don’t know that until they experience proper sauna with proper ventilation.
Even for those of us who travel to and from Europe frequently (Ex-Covid) I think it is impossible to have a real reference point, a gauge of a sauna here vs one in Finland. After saunas there we spend hours on a plane with not so great air, we live in houses and work in offices that are poorly ventilated and have too high levels of CO2 and then we get in a sauna and the feeling of suffocation seems normal. It’s not. Glenn’s comment is about as good and accurate as we can get and he’s been experiencing and building saunas for 30 years.
Sauna in a properly ventilated sauna gets better and more refreshing with each round. That’s different than what many people in America have told me that they experience.
In considering ventilation it occurred to me that our primary problem is not how to ventilate, but what we’re aiming for. What are we trying to accomplish? What’s our goal?
Without objective measures I’m not sure that it is possible for us to build saunas in North America properly.
What follows is not a proscription for how to ventilate a sauna. Because right now I don’t know what that is. I’ve searched and, at least in English, there is a lot more inaccurate and bad information than good. I also don’t believe there is necessarily a single best way to accomplish it. It can successfully vary from one sauna to the next and this is part of why people say that each sauna has its own soul.
(Update: For an electrically heated sauna or a wood sauna with external combustion air intake the best and perhaps only way to achieve proper ventilation is a fresh air supply above the heater with mechanical exhaust on an opposite wall below the foot bench providing 15-25 CFM per person).
Rather, this is focused on better understanding what we are trying to accomplish – what is good air? What is the purity element of löyly? And how can we know. How can we have a reference point so that we get it right? So that we don’t build a sauna and use it for five years and then experience a proper sauna and realize how bad ours had been. How can we do it correctly from the start?
Some aspects of löyly cannot be measured. Some bits come from the soul of each individual sauna. One element, moisture content, is perhaps purely personal preference. But two elements, temperature and air purity, can and should be measured. They are definitive and air quality much more so than temperature. There is considerable personal preference in temperature but air quality is either good or bad – our body doesn’t care what our personal preference or opinion is. How we accomplish them is a separate discussion. Let’s first figure out what we are trying to accomplish.
Some CO2 Measurements
Over the past 6 months I’ve done informal testing in our sauna with my GasLab meter. This is a 6 person sauna of 12.6 m3 (444 cubic ft) or about 2 m3 (74 cubic ft) per person. It’s heated by a 9kw Tylö-Helo Himalaya. This image and the one at the beginning should give you a rough idea of the setup. My meter is at 1m above the sitting bench, approximately where a friend would be sitting and what is the generally accepted standard for temp measurements. (A friend would be much more enjoyable but with Covid we must make do and the meter is it.) Measurements from the floor (black tile) are 19” to the standing platform + 18” to the foot bench + 18” to the sitting bench + 43” to the ceiling. Due to height constraints we were unable to get the foot bench to above the rocks as we’d wanted. You can see the exhaust vent in the ceiling.
1) With my current venting (traditional Finnish/European venting of 4” gap below the door, convection vent to outside in the opposite corner ceiling) and just me in the sauna – the CO2 rises from an initial 397ppm to 651 ppm after 15 minutes. At 20 minutes it was 704 and 30 minutes 783.
That was just me alone and measured at the seating positions with the best airflow. With six people in there for 20 minutes the increase in CO2 would be about 1842 ppm resulting in an ambient of 2239 ppm (and higher for seating positions farther away from the exhaust vent).
2) When I repeated this with a venting solution recommended by Tylö-Helo U.S. in their manual the CO2 levels rose faster. From 400 at the start to 873 after 20 minutes and 1082 after 30 minutes. With six people then we’d expect the rise in CO2 after 20 minutes to be 2838 for an ambient CO2 level of 3235 ppm. This by the way is nearly the same result as when I closed off venting entirely, which isn’t surprising as the design of their ventilation solution would be expected to result in no effective ventilation. Again, that is with just me in a 6 person sauna.
These levels are all much too high and will have many bathers feeling suffocated and lightheaded.
It’s also important to note that the CO2 levels will often decline slowly. If you do rounds of 15 minutes in + 15 minutes out then the CO2 level will likely not return to 400 ppm before you start your next round. It will likely be higher when you start round 2 than when you started round 1. And a bit higher yet starting round 3. And so on.
With just me alone I saw cumulative increases of about 80 ppm per round. Four of us would be an increase of about 320 ppm per round or 960 after 3 rounds. Better ventilation will significantly reduce or hopefully eliminate this cumulative effect.
For comparison, a sauna of 2 cubic meters per person, 6 air changes per hour and good air distribution/mixing (E.G., a good Finnish sauna) with bathers spending 15 minutes in and 15 minutes out for 3 rounds calculates to CO2 levels of very roughly 582, 594 and 606 ppm. I say very roughly because I don’t know what the actual mix rate would be. I assume it is very high but we need a lot more tests to know for sure. Given my experience in Finnish saunas this seems about right. I felt better in Finnish saunas (≈600 ppm CO2) than in my current sauna alone (≈700-800 ppm CO2) and both of these better than our current sauna w/ multiple people.
Do we want a Finnish Sauna or American warm room with bad air?
Goals of Sauna Ventilation
1) First and foremost, removal of excess CO2 and replacement with fresh outside air.
2) Removal of all or as much of air impurities as possible. This includes a variety of VOCs, mold & bacteria and perspiration / body odor and particulate matter (PM1.0, PM2.5, etc.). Poorly ventilated saunas have alarmingly high levels of PM. This even for electrically heated saunas as the calrods used for these emit a high amount of PM2.5.
3) Heat distribution within the sauna. Air is actually a poor conductor of heat and then there is the issue of convection and hot air rising. Air movement is needed to conduct the heat around the sauna and well planned ventilation can greatly lessen cold feet.
4) Removal of humidity and perspiration after the end of the days sauna.
5) Maintain fresh air during periods of non-use.
How Much Ventilation Is Needed?
Some? A lot? 15 CFM per person? 6 changes per hour?
If nobody ever told you what temp a sauna should be but only said ‘hot’, what is the likelihood you’d get it right? Or they said that you need 9kw of heat? Turn on that 9kw and leave it on? Air freshness is much more difficult to gauge than temp. I’m still surprised how often someone is told to keep windows open to reduce the CO2 levels in their bedroom at night and how surprised they are with how much better they sleep and how much better they feel the next day. Just as with our saunas, they’d no idea how bad the air in their bedroom was.
In addition to the amount of ventilation we also need to pay attention to the dispersion or mixing within the sauna to insure that all bathers get sufficient fresh air. We could have great air for people in a direct line between the supply and exhaust vents but poor air for those farther away. The ventilation plan recommended by Tylö-Helo and Finnleo for our sauna would have resulted in much or all of the limited fresh air flowing across the floor to the exhaust vent without benefiting bathers, even with powered exhaust – plenty of air but largely useless.
An Objective Standard: 500-700 ppm CO2 For All Bathers.
How can you know if you’re being affected by healthy heat or by bad air? If you’re leaving the sauna because you’ve received max benefit from heat and löyly or because your blood is suffocating from too much CO2?
Our body’s response to bad air is fairly objective. X level of ambient CO2 results in Y level of blood CO2 and produces Z effect on our cognitive and physical systems.
What we want is fresh air to breath – so let’s measure that.
Based on what we currently know, if CO2 at bathers faces is below 500 ppm then you are likely experiencing the full benefits of sauna heat and löyly. If CO2 is above 700 ppm then you are likely experiencing bad air, not heat and löyly. It’s as simple as that.
Good ventilation that maintains healthy low levels of CO2 applies to our homes (particularly bedrooms at night), offices, gyms, restaurants and other indoor spaces as well. It may be more important in a sauna because of the heat stress our bodies are going through but it’s still important elsewhere.
Why Measure CO2?
1) CO2 is itself undesirable at levels above 500 ppm. We want to know what it is so that we can keep it low.
2) CO2 is an indicator gas for ventilation in occupied spaces. If CO2 levels are kept low then we know that we are getting relatively good ventilation, that any VOCs or impurities present are likely being exhausted and kept at healthy levels.
3) It takes the guesswork out of ventilation. Good ventilation requires exhausting stale air, supplying fresh make up air and insuring that the air throughout the sauna is being mixed well so that all bathers have good pure air Löyly. It can be complicated and easy to miss judge. We can debate this or that ventilation scheme until the cows come home but until we measure it we really have no idea. Measuring CO2 makes this much simpler, it’s absolute, no guessing – If under 500 ppm then we’re good, if over 700 ppm then we’ve work to do.
4) It’s affordable and easy to measure. (Be careful to observe the maximum operational temperatures of various measuring devices).
How Much Ventilation Is Needed?
Enough to insure that we do not get excessive build up of CO2 in our blood and experience negative effects from it. Enough to insure that other air impurities are exhausted.
Ideally then a sauna should have ventilation that results in CO2 remaining below 550 ppm but up to perhaps 700 is likely acceptable. Above 700 means that bathers are being negatively affected by bad air and the higher the CO2 level the greater the negative affect on bathers so over 700 should be avoided if possible.
Focusing on CO2 gets us to where we want to be – fresh pure healthy air for bathers – Löyly. It eliminates problems of too little ventilation or poor dispersion. If we’re maintaining proper low levels of CO2 and proper heat then the rest should be taking care of itself. There’s no need to question if this ventilation scheme or that ventilation scheme does or does not work (except for those of us who enjoy exploring those things) – if it results in maintaining appropriate levels of CO2, which in turn should be exhausting other impurities, then it works.
Realistically, staying below 550 ppm may prove difficult. We may have to find a balance between air purity and temperature.
Aiming for 6 air changes per hour or 8 CFM’s per person can likely work in many cases so long as people use the proper vent configuration to insure good dispersion. However, a clear problem we have in North America is a lot of diagrams of vent configurations that even with proper airflow will not provide sufficient fresh air to bathers. A CO2 measurement eliminates this problem.
(Update: further study is indicating that 15-25 CFM / person is likely needed to maintain healthy CO2 levels.)
The Analyzed Sauna
I’ve studied the effects of indoor air quality and CO2 enough to know that getting this right in our sauna will make for a much more enjoyable and beneficial experience for me and guests and be well worth the investment of time and money. To better understand what’s happening I’m hoping to embark on a bit of further analysis. The goal is to better understand heat, fresh air ventilation and how they interact in a sauna. This will involve several elements.
Temp logger and probes. I have a two port logger and probes but I’d ideally want 6 or 8 probes so that I can consistently track temps across many tests and routine sauna sessions. Test points might include; 3” below ceiling directly over heater (UL’s U.S. thermostat location), 12” below ceiling & 12-20” to side of heater (EU thermostat location), 2 or more seating locations at bather’s head height (1m above seat), foot bench, some lower point. Ventilation has the potential to create temperature problems but it can also help to distribute heat more evenly and reduce cold feet so it’s critical to monitor temps with various ventilation schemes.
Ideally I’ll have enough that they can be consistent through numerous tests and routine sauna sessions without moving any. Even so I’ll do some sessions with probes all along seating areas to better understand these differences and arrayed from ceiling to floor to better understand stratification.
These loggers are accurate to ±0.5°c which is much better than typical thermometers and thermostats that can be off by ±7°c or much more.
CO2 Logger and sensors. I’m currently using my handheld GasLab meter. It’s quite accurate but cannot log data when temps are over 60°c. And even though GasLab told me that it’s OK to use it in a sauna up to 99°c I’m a bit leary. And it’s only one measuring point.
I’m working with them on a setup of three sensors that will send data back to a logger located in a cooler environment such as the floor of the sauna or in the changing room. This will allow us to compare CO2 levels and thus fresh air ventilation at multiple locations. Mostly at head height along the seating areas but at some point also other parts of the room.
Smoke. There’s no better way to understand airflow (and lack of airflow) than smoke. I’m somewhat concerned about polluting my sauna though. That’s kind of funny when you think about the popularity of Smoke Sauna but airflow testing smoke is usually chemical based and I want to make sure I don’t create any long term odor/chemical problems so want to find a way to do this that does not leave any unpleasant or unhealthy after smell. Any ideas on this would be very welcomed. Dry Ice (CO2) sort of works but not very well.
Energy Use. This will come from IotaWatt and be correlated with various ventilation schemes. How much in energy use will better air quality cost?
CFM’s. I would like to know with some accuracy the actual CFM’s of exhaust. Measuring or logging this accurately on an ongoing basis may prove difficult given my duct layout but hopefully I can figure out something that is somewhat accurate.
Humidity. My industrial hygrometer can only work to 50°c. I may see if I can find budget to include humidity on one of the temp loggers. All of the inexpensive sauna hygrometers I’ve tried so far have been grossly inaccurate. This is, I think, very non-critical and more for curiosity. Two or three scoops of water on the rocks every so often produces a very comfortable level of humidity and I think that’s all we’re after.
Air Pressure. This is another fun to have for my own curiosity but not really necessary. Using a digital pressure differential manometer to measure pressure changes at various levels.
Maybe after Covid is over we can see about hauling some of this to other saunas to see how they perform.
Conclusion / Next Steps
Now that I’ve a good, measurable and attainable goal rather than something nebulous I can focus on doing it.
My goal is 500-600 ppm CO2 for all bathers which will make for a much more pleasant experience than the higher levels we currently have and be more similar to a properly ventilated sauna in Finland. I want to achieve this while maintaining sufficient and even temps throughout and with as little energy use as possible. So for me the next steps are some analysis to better understand sauna temps, air purity, and air movement with various ventilation schemes. Is keeping CO2 below 500 ppm a good and reasonable goal? Or is staying below 800 ppm difficult enough? What is a good goal for CO2 levels in a sauna?
I also want to better understand our physiology and how respiration works at 96°c vs 20°c and in a dry vs moist environment. Do our lungs transfer O2 and CO2 as effectively in a hot sauna? Informal sampling with an Oximeter indicates my blood oxygen is slightly lower than average after I’ve been in the sauna and slightly higher than average after cooling down. We know that this is not likely due to any changes in the amount of ambient oxygen in the air so is likely a change in how it’s transferred in my lungs. Dr. Jari Laukkanen is an expert on sauna health and I’ve a friend who’s an anesthesiologist at Mayo Clinic so hopefully more to come on this soon.
I would also like to better understand, besides bather comfort and enjoyment, what affects poor ventilation and high CO2 have specific to sauna. Does higher blood CO2 lower the affect of sauna on relaxing muscles after a workout? Or lower the affect on diminishing heart disease or dementia? Higher CO2 levels are likely to cause bathers to spend less time in the sauna due to a feeling of suffocation or dizziness, what affect does that have on health and other benefits? Or increased blood pressure, heart rate or heart rate variability?
In a sauna there is a bit greater air pressure near the ceiling than at the floor (stack effect, heat rises, etc.). Is it enough to make a difference in respiration? In theory we’d take in more O2 and eliminate less CO2, but my own blood oxygen indicates just the opposite. Does vent placement matter with this?
I want to better understand löyly. Some I can do here but mostly I require a trip to Finland this next winter!

Some random notes.
2021.04.28 – One thing that we’re playing with is using lactate levels to determine blood CO2 levels. Blood CO2 is best measured with blood samples which is difficult to do at home. Capnography, which measures exhaled CO2, is easier and less expensive (though still not cheap) but does not provide us with the information we want. By measuring lactate before and after sauna rounds we can possibly determine blood CO2. More to come on this.
2021.05.02 – I’ve been informally collecting a bit of data. On average, while in the sauna, my heart rate will increase to about 120-130bpm and my SpO2 (blood oxygen) will decrease from my normal of about 98 to 96 or 95 (20201.09.19 – we now know that it was actually higher in the sauna).
My heart rate pretty much always gets to 12x bpm regardless of where I start which ranges from about 50 (my resting heart rate) to around 90. It will typically decline to about 100-105 by the time I get to the end of our dock and then somewhat quickly decline after I dive in.
SpO2 is interesting. On MWF I sauna after my workout and on these days it will typically drop to 96. Otherwise, when I sauna in the evening, typically after being much less active, it will drop to 95 and occasionally/rarely 94. It has never dropped below this though. If I start with a SpO2 of 95 I’ll end with 95.
These do not appear to change winter or summer.
2021.06.01 – We’ve had a few different environmental monitors in our sauna over the past year. Two of them, our IQAir AVP and uRad A3, consistently show very high particulate matter when water is ladled on to the rocks. Steam itself should not be causing that though it is possible. More likely this is from the calrod heating elements. Studies by Dr Jari Laukkanen and others have show clear evidence that routine sauna bathing reduces probabilities of death overall and in particular from cardiac problems. Assuming that a decent number of the sauna’s used in these studies were electric then this should account for the effects of PM. I don’t know if this is a health issue or not but is something that should be investigated. If it is related to the calrods then there may be design options for reducing PM production that should be considered.
2021.06.27 – We’ll be playing with a new muscle oxygen sensor and blood lactate meter later this summer. I’m looking forward to seeing the results from these.
2021.07.25 – Compliments of recent wildfires in Canada we had a few days of very poor outdoor air quality. U.S. AQI over 150, PM2.5 over 50 and PM1.0 extremely high. I am currently only very lightly filtering the air coming in to our sauna (approx MERV-2) so the air quality in our sauna would have matched that outside. So, we didn’t use our sauna during this time. Good filtration on intake air is something to think about if you live in an area with frequent poor air quality.
FWIW, we normally use MERV-13 filters in our inside HVAC systems but during periods of high PM, particularly smoke, I have some MERV-16’s (From Lennox) that I swap in. I don’t use them normally because they do reduce airflow and increase energy use somewhat significantly, need to be changed more often, are expensive and under normal conditions they’d not provide much or any practical benefit over the MERV-13’s.
2021.09.19 – Heart rate can decline (recover) very quickly in some people as they are leaving the sauna. If I exit our sauna and immediately put on my apple watch I will see 110-132 bpm. Deciding to sacrifice an older chest HRM I learned that my actual heart rate in the sauna was 10-20 bpm higher than I’d thought previously. It drops considerably by the time I get out, get my apple watch on and apple watch begins to measure (I also learned that turning off security on my watch so that I didn’t have to try to enter my passcode with a wet finger helps). This also appears to vary by individual with some people recovering much faster than others though data on this is very limited. I’ve known for some time from wearing both during a workout that wrist HRM’s are also much slower to indicate changes in heart rate and do not indicate peaks and valleys as accurately as chest HRM’s.
NOTE: If you think you want to try this be very very careful. Batteries DO NOT like high heat.
Higher CO2 concentrations from poor ventilation appear to make a noticeable difference in heart rate. If I don’t turn on the sauna exhaust fan then heart rates appear a bit higher. Because the heart rate range varies so much normally anyway, a lot more samples are needed to determine what this effect is.

]]>Our house is also as much an Inn for friends and relatives as a house for us and the kitchen is critical to this.
This is the fourth kitchen we’ve designed and built for ourselves with each making functional improvements on the previous. We’d take notes over time about what does and doesn’t work for us and apply them to the next version. We felt we’d largely got it right with the kitchen in our prior house (v3) that we had redone in 2004 so this v4 kitchen is only slightly modified from that one.
I view a kitchen primarily as a workshop for producing food. While a well designed workshop is a pleasure to work in, a poorly designed shop is frustrating and dismal no matter how nice it looks. I also believe that functional looks more appealing than something built for show. I’ve seen a number of ‘gorgeous’ kitchens but none are as aesthetically appealing to me as those that are functional, well used and well loved.
And, I find matchey matchey appliances/packages visually boring and blah.
I think the only form over function decision that we made is that everywhere in our new kitchen that is soapstone would have been stainless but I’m happy with the soapstone.
Form is still important though. Being able to enjoy how our kitchen looks does make it more enjoyable. It won’t overcome poor function but will add to good function. I think my wife, our designers and architects, builder, cabinet maker and others did a great job making our functional kitchen look great. There was a bit of frustration on the part of our designers over some unchangeable functional requirements that we had but in the end it all worked.
Our new kitchen (Jun 2020) is a slight modification of our previous kitchen that had worked very well for us for 15 years and that we’d built to be a very functional working kitchen. We replaced our 36” Wolf with a 48” Bluestar and went w/ a 24” griddle instead of 12” (thus the 36” to 48”). We added a CSO. We did much better ventilation.
Our new kitchen includes a 48” Bluestar RNB Range w/ 4 burners and a 24” griddle/flat-top, Miele XL CSO (combi-steam), Miele H6780 electric wall oven w/ moisture plus, GE Advantium Speed Bake / Microwave (240v), 2 Miele warming drawers, countertop induction hobs.
Sub-Zero Combi (Frig over 2 freezer drawers), Perlick under-counter beverage frig (Scullery), Scotsman under counter ice maker (Scullery), 2 Frigidaire Flexi-Freezers (Garage – each can be either all frig or all freezer). 2 Miele DW’s (one Kitchen, one Scullery).
The choice of a Bluestar RNB rather than a Wolf came down mostly to the burners. For burners you want as even of heat as possible across the bottom of the pan, slightly more heat towards the middle and slightly less towards the edges, and as much of the heat as possible applied to the pan.
The burners that Wolf (and others) now use are not really that good for cooking. They throw heat towards the outside edges of pans rather than spread it evenly across the bottom of the pan. This results in less even heat across the bottom of the pan and more heat (and byproducts of combustion) in to the cooks face. The sides of pans get hotter, which is the opposite of what you want. And it wastes btus.
The star burners on the Bluestar are simply much better for cooking. They produce more even heat across the bottom of pans with slightly more towards the center and slightly less towards the side and throw less heat in to the cooks face. More btu’s are applied to cooking so the difference in btu’s is actually much greater than the simple numbers imply. After 4 years (Jun 2024) in our new kitchen (after cooking on several Wolf’s for a couple of decades) we know we made the right choice.
The availability of good countertop induction hobs/burners allows us to have the best of both worlds – gas and induction. We’re not limited to one or the other. We have good gas burners for most stuff (some of which cannot be done on electric or induction) and we also have countertop induction hobs when we need them. Another advantage to this approach is that many of the countertop induction hobs such as the Control Freak or Avantco are much better and more accurate than any consumer induction range or rangetop currently available.
The RNB also has a thermostatic griddle which is much better than any type of burner top and provides considerable versatility. More on Why Good Griddles Are Important.
Top oven priority was a good gas oven. Gas ovens provide a moist environment which is better for most food, particularly meats and breads. Electric ovens provide a dry environment which is better for cakes. Some electric ovens such as our Miele have a moisture system that injects steam in to the oven to try to mimic the cooking environment of a gas oven. Commercial systems like this work fairly well, we’re still getting use to the moisture control on the Miele and so far it’s not quite the same as a gas oven.
We also have a Memphis pellet grill on our porch that gets used throughout the year – even during Minnesnowta winter. One night every week is pizza night and these are baked on a stone or steel in the grill. Besides the typical meats pellet grills also work well for veggies. FWIW, I’d recommend staying far far away from Memphis Grills. Their quality has taken a nose dive since late 2019. We along with many others have had considerable reliability problems that often make it unusable. When it works we love it and so we hope that these problems can be fixed rather than have to replace it with something else (more on the Memphis Grills problems: The Minnesota Problem).
Note (2024): Our Memphis Elite that had become unusable was replaced with a new ITC3 version Elite. This one is much better but unfortunately is still very problematic. WiFi and thus the app does not work reliably. In Indirect mode the temps will sometimes swing very wildly like ±100°f. Probe temps will sometimes jump around wildly. The touch screen is becoming increasingly unresponsive or doing things we don’t want it to do. The grates were all warped from the factory and we’ve still not received replacements. One meat probe fell apart (but was replaced).
FWIW, we’ve begun using Meatsticks for all of our temperature monitoring. Originally due to the various Memphis problems but we’ve found them extremely wonderful throughout our cooking world. We also use them with sous vide which allows us to know precisely what the temps are in the meat rather than guessing (example below). We played with a number of wireless options with the Meatsticks coming out on top, Thermoworks RFX a close second and Meater third.
For some random thoughts on small tools: Cookware.
Personally I prefer cooking over gas. Part of that is that it’s simply what I’m use to and part is that there are some cooking techniques that cannot be done on consumer level induction. On the other hand, our winter home has induction so I do get to use it for two or three months each year there and we also have countertop induction hobs that we use. Sadly, neither has made me a good cook. That said, we did run an 80a electric line to behind our range in case we or someone else wants something other than gas in the future.
Induction does have some advantages like being more energy efficient, not producing extra heat in the kitchen (very much appreciated in more tropical climates), and easier to clean up (if well made). Some, like the Control Freak, offer much greater control than can be had with gas.
One downside is that it works only with specific pans. Not a huge issue but a PITA in some cases. There is also induction squeal – a sound that can be extremely irritating. It can be minimized but not eliminated (physics!). Some people are much more bothered by it than others.
LESS VENTILATION IS NOT A BENEFIT – despite what marketing people say, cooking over induction requires as good of ventilation as cooking over gas.
Does it boil water faster? Than a lower power gas range (including Wolf), yes. Water boils faster on a Bluestar RNB (and would on similar gas ranges) as on any consumer induction.
Is Induction safer? WE DO NOT KNOW. From the research I’ve done there is no conclusive answer and likely will not be for 10 – 30 years. Twenty years from now we may be able to say that induction is very safe and everyone who chose induction in 2022 made a good safe choice. Or, we may be looking at epidemic levels of cancer and dementia in 40 and 50 year olds caused by induction. Again, WE DO NOT KNOW. We’ll very likely determine that some induction cooking is extremely dangerous and some not (thanks to better quality electronics, better shielding, etc.).
One issue that many medical and research types who have raised concerns about induction point out is that tests of induction have all been done at 30cm (about 1’) from the front of the range or cooktop. EMF, the primary health concern with induction, falls off very quickly. It is massively stronger at the front of the range than 1’ back. I don’t know about you but I rarely stand 1’ back from our range. More like maybe 3” and often leaning up against it. And what’s right there at induction EMF producing level is rather precious to me.
We know or think we know the risks and harms of gas and we know or think we know that good ventilation lessens or possibly eliminates that risk and harm. We do not know that about induction. Induction has the hallmarks of what we once thought about asbestos. For me I prefer the monster I know to the one I don’t.
FWIW, I’m a proponent of electric. I’ve driven battery electric cars for 14 years, yard tools (and in 2023 our big snowblower) are electric, and doubt that we will ever buy another combustion engine of any sort (car, boat, mower, etc.). We have held off on getting a pontoon until we can buy one that’s electric powered. I still prefer my non-electric Workcycles Opafiets bicycle for transportation whenever possible though I expect at some point in our 70’s or 80’s we’ll get e-bikes.

Ventilation is critical. We quite dislike the odors of meals past ourselves and we don’t want guests to be offended by them either. Perhaps more important is how much we’ve learned in recent years about the harmful effects on our health that comes with cooking. And this not just from the byproducts of gas combustion but Carcinogens, VOC’s and Particulate Matter produced by cooking itself. There was also the issue of how LOUD our Vent-A-Hood range hood was.
We wanted ventilation in our new kitchen that would be effective in removing not just the odors but also the Carcinogens, VOC’s and PM. We also wanted it to be as quiet as possible.
I’d long noticed that, unlike consumer hoods, those in restaurants are always giant boxes of empty space. I’d also noticed that these commercial hoods also seem much quieter. A bit of research and I found these two things are related. That big empty space is called Containment Area or Containment Volume. It contains the cooking effluent until it can be exhausted. One benefit of this is that commercial hoods can actually use fewer CFM’s (airflow) than residential hoods (who rely on big CFM numbers as part of their marketing campaigns).
We could not find a consumer/residential hood that had sufficient containment area and every one of them is louder than commercial hoods. SO, we installed a commercial hood. And it was one of the best decisions we made.
It works much better at removing effluent (you can’t smell my wok stir-fries from 10’ away, much less anywhere else in the house) and at the same time is much quieter. It’s so quiet that we actually adjusted the low setting that we use most often to a bit higher CFM’s so that we could hear it a little bit to know that it’s on. Prior to doing this you couldn’t even hear it on low.
The hood is 60” x 30” custom made by Accurex.
Besides doing a much better job getting rid of the effluent and with a lot less noise, there are other benefits. At 6’4” above the floor it is totally out of the way when cooking and so no head banging which I’ve really come to appreciate. The lights are up in the top and reflect off all of the hood interior surfaces so it provides much better, brighter and more even light with fewer shadows than consumer hoods.
We also installed a 400 CFM exhaust vent over the oven stack. In hindsight the vent itself should have been a bit larger and maybe a little further out from the stack but it still works fairly well.
Perhaps the biggest conflict point in our prior kitchen was cooking and coffee. There was often contention for the sink, counter space and the aisle in between them. Our new kitchen includes a dedicated coffee & tea space with it’s own sink. Keeping this out of way of other kitchen activities has proven a really good move.
I had originally planned to get a Jr Casa from Chris Coffee but that plan got interrupted and I’m glad it did. Our son and daughter (in-law) were on Fogo Island when Covid hit and all of their friends told them to not come back to Brooklyn (New York) so… they came to stay with us instead. He’s had a Breville Oracle Touch for some time and found my Rancillio Silvia to be sub standard to that. With numerous reminders that it was fully returnable if I didn’t like it he convinced me to order one.
After a few days of using it I was surprised at how good and consistent of espresso it made as well as the quality of the steamed milk and froth for lattés and other drinks. Making americano’s each morning is a breeze and they turn out quite good. As good as I’d be able to do with the Jr Casa? That’s difficult to say. My guess is that sometimes I’d do better with the Jr Casa and sometimes worse so on average about the same. The Oracle Touch is likely more consistent than I’d be with the Jr Casa but where it really shines is convenience and ease-of-use. And the latter really pays off when we have guests who can all make drinks themselves whenever they want which would not always be the case with the Jr Casa.
It was a good investment.
No matter how much of a workshop the kitchen is it is also, as in many homes, the central social place in our home. And this is far more important to us than cooking functionality or aesthetics.
We tried to balance the work vs social aspects by including space for people to gather that is in the kitchen space but not in the work space. We also thought through traffic patterns and tried to keep traffic movement mostly out of the work space.
At the same time we do want people in the kitchen and in the work space so aisles are a bit wider to welcome people in to the space and still give room for all of us to move about with little conflict. I love it when I’m prepping something and my brother-in-law or niece come stand beside me to chat.
Across the Scullery Hall from the kitchen is… The Scullery. Similar to other elements this was born out of function – to have prep along with dirty dishes from cooking, serving and eating out of the main kitchen.
It does quad duty:
Prep/catering – It functions as both a prep kitchen and catering space.
Scullery – It has a large sink for cleaning stuff, a dishwasher, and plenty of counter space for dirty or clean dishes.
Bar – It’s the bar for the main level and porch.
The window to the porch (to the left but not seen in the photo above) is counter level so when it’s open it can act as a bar for the porch.
Storage – A bit of extra nearby storage (we also have storage on the LL for extra larger pots, chafing dishes, induction hobs, roasters, etc.) Thanks to the recommendations of some people on Houzz we did almost all drawers for the lowers in the kitchen and scullery – no doored cabinets except under sinks. This is advice that’s proved totally golden!
Dedicated ice makers that make good clear ice, such as our Scotsman, are quite wonderful. They also waste a chunk of expensive energy and water. To do what they do they have some electronics, a motor to drive the ice out of the molds and a cooler to keep the ice… ice cold …so that it doesn’t melt. THEN, in order to insure that there’s always room in the top for fresh cold ice, they have a heating plate on the bottom that …melts the ice. And a pump to pump the resulting melted ice (water) up to a drain. This is all also not a quiet operation, particularly the pump.
A good ice maker is well insulated and without the heater turned on the ice in it will last several days. But we want fresh ice, not 2 day old stale ice. How fresh? In a diet coke it’s difficult/impossible to tell 1 minute old from 12 hr old. In a Negroni up to 6 hrs is unnoticeable and 12 hrs is only noticeable if directly comparing and 24 hrs can be very noticeable. Similarly, I make ice balls for cocktails with a Wintersmiths ice ball maker. These must be stored in sealed containers if they are to remain fresh and not interfere with the flavor of a good old fashioned.
Most days we don’t use a lot of ice. About 5 – 10 glasses worth. We experimented with turning it off at some point during the day and then back on the next morning. What we found is that running it just 3 hrs each day provides more than enough fresh ice – about 3x as much as we typically need.
After a conversation with Scotsman to verify that it’s OK to switch power to the outlet on/off each day we now have the outlet controlled by our HA system. It turns on at 7a each morning and off at 10a. Less noise, less wasted energy and water, plenty of fresh ice. If we’re entertaining then a push of a button keeps it on until 10p that day. So our ice maker now wastes about 1/10 as much electricity and water as it did before.
Why Scotsman and others don’t put timers in these to set a daily on/off time (along w/ a ‘keep on for the day’ button) is beyond me. $20 coffee makers from Target have timers, certainly Scotsman can figure it out. A built-in timer would be best as then it can still run the drain pump even when the heater is off. If you’re buying one make sure to ask your sales person about a timer. Maybe if enough people ask they’ll get the message and put one in.

]]>On 15 June Marita, Krysta and their band of wonderful people took possession (like literally, we weren’t allowed to be there and I got yelled at, with a smile, for even being outside to meet with our landscape architect!) for 3 days of turning a construction project in to a wonderful comfortable home.
On the evening of 17 Jun we were greeted at our front door and walked in to see this.
They called this our HGTV moment. And it was. Marita and Krysta nailed it. Their design work couldn’t have been more perfect and that and the transformation over the past three days brought tears to the eyes of a wonderful woman who’s endured a lot and really deserves this.
With glasses of champagne in our hands we were led through our new home room by gorgeous room.
Here, sitting in my sweeties office for the first time. Back in March our son and daughter-in-law were on Fogo Island when Covid really began to hit. Their friends in New York told them to skip coming back there as things weren’t so good so they flew here to stay with us for a while. Covid, for my sweetie and I, has been a bit of a blessing

Our first day living in our new house and a bit of cleaning before the ritual lighting of the lanterns.
And down to business. Our son telecommuting from the loft.
My wife did about 99% of the unpacking while I was busy dealing with a numerous other things.
Our house is really gorgeous and accomplishing it was a wonderful team effort. Jeff and TJ from Murphy & Co did a spectacular job on the overall design, awesome details and on coordinating a lot of input and making it all work. As with any good team though the lines often blurred and the end result incorporated ideas and knowledge from everyone on the core team of Jeff, TJ, Marita, Krysta, Rick Hendel, Bob Caswell, Scott Ritter, and Mark Latske. Steve Kothman joined the party kind of late but made his contributions as well. And beyond the core team were a plethora of people whose ideas and input proved vital to the end result. And no matter how good the design the end result wouldn’t be what it is without everyone at Hendel Homes, their knowledge and all of the skilled craftsfolk they brought in to turn ideas and paper designs in to the real thing. This though is a post for another day.
]]>There was a LOT of discussion, measuring and marking up paper for how to do the stair runner. A plaid like we have is more difficult than a solid color or other patterns.
We had our final blower door test. The overall result was disappointing. More on that later. Below is measuring the exhaust hood for the range. He said that it’s rare for any residential hood to measure any more than half its rated CFM and most are closer to about 1/3. Our blower is 1400 CFM on max so 992 CFM is quite good (and was the highest he’d ever seen and the quietest he’d ever heard). HOWEVER, we’ll rarely need that much and most of the time we’ll likely run it at maybe half or about 500 CFM.

The primary purpose of such a high volume is to remove fumes from hair spray. This is about the same as our former house which only did a moderate job of removing hair spray fumes.

A Covid Summer with Sid! One of the good things about Covid is that restaurants have had to create a lot more outdoor seating like this in a parking lot. It’d be nice if they’d keep it like this in future years.

There was some miscommunication on the fireplaces. These are wood burning fireplaces that we’d wanted gas starters in. Unlike gas logs the gas starters require a Danté valve to be installed nearby to shut off the gas. So, Bob did some rework to get the valve in.
Our dock has been having problems. I discovered the other day that the sway braces weren’t put on when the dock was put in this spring which is likely why this happened. I found them in the lake and under some pipes so hopefully once I get them on it will be more stable.
Curt and Ben brought the shutters and window boxes that they made and painted. We’re excited to see how these look and my sweetie is very anxious to begin planting in them.
Most of stair runner is done. The bottom three sections are temporary trial pieces to see how they do. With measurements from these they’ll make new ones that line up better.

Oops. We had a bit of a downpour that caused a lot of mud from our front yard to wash in to the back, then clog the drains for the sunken patio resulting in a bit of a lake. The water level was about 8” high on the doors.
We were quite thankful that this is all the damage that there was. After seeing how high the water level was against the doors we expected a good portion of the lower level to be flooded and damaged. Our Loewen doors did quite well keeping out the water.

Ben with Coldstone Shorelines building a new line of rip rap along our shore. He started by using his excavator to place large rocks down in the lakebed to create a work place for himself and then began building the rip rap. Ben is a civil engineer and does a great job making sure that the shorelines he does will remain stable for many many years (and decades!). Rip rap has become much more important than in years past. Boats that produce large wakes can cause a very considerable amount of damage to shorelines and rip rap has to be done well to withstand the large and periodically even waves.
Ben has an amazing sense for what he can do with his excavator (and nerves of steel I think). He was on the edge of tipping over a few times.
This seems a silly photo but there’s a lot behind it. It took us about four months and pressure from our city who holds the franchise agreement, our state and the FCC to get Comcast to install internet for us.

A bit of heartache. Balanced on top is one of the first ‘large’ dimmer systems I made. Eighteen 2.4kw and six 6kw dimmers were in that rack. It lit Little River Band, Kansas, Phil Keaggy, The Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, John Prine, Randy Stonehill, John McLoughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Alabama, Hotel, Crimson Tide and even that perennial favorite Peaches & Herb.

One of our favorite restaurants that we frequently ride out bicycles to. The old much smaller outdoor seating filled up fast so for us there’s one big benefit to Covid – AMPLE OUTDOOR SEATING! This is a quite enjoyable place to eat and many in the area are hoping that they keep it.
