August is National Overdose Awareness Month, a global campaign dedicated to honoring loved ones lost to drug overdoses, supporting grieving families, and reducing the stigma of addiction.

If you or know someone who is in need of support, the Christi Center offers in-person Loss to Overdose groups at the Christi Center, located at 2306 Hancock Dr., Austin, Texas 78756.  You can view our meeting dates at: christicenter.org/calendar/loss-to-overdose-in-person

Please complete our intake form at: christicenter.org/get-started or call our intake line at: 512-467-2600.

Participants benefit from the ability to talk about their loved ones’ struggles with addictions and the support of individuals who are also coping with a loss to overdose. We offer a safe space to express yourself and provide coping strategies to help manage the particularly complex emotions associated with loss to overdose.

Our Loss to Overdose and Addictions Group meets monthly on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month.

John Jeff Hutter of Gutsy Grief is hosting a two-day pop-up art gallery in downtown Austin, built entirely from work and objects that loss moved people to make. Features 30 artists, selected through an open community. The work spans painting, poetry, photography, artifacts, experiential art, and installation.

Each piece is displayed alongside the artist’s own written account of the loss that inspired it, which is the defining feature that separates this from a conventional gallery show. The stories are the exhibit as much as the objects are.

Visit this interactive experience on Friday, August 21, 6:30 to 9:00 PM, and Saturday, August 22, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (open gallery).  Located at411 Brazos Street, Suite 107

Tickets are free with optional donation to the Christi Center.  Learn more and RSVP at themuseum.johnjeffhutter.com

It’s officially summer here in the city! It is a time to enjoy yourself and your family. There are many things to enjoy in the summer: baseball, swimming, sleeping in, and live music! But if you’ve experienced the death of a loved one, everything you love about summer may be different.

You may be looking at all your normal activities through a different lens, or you may not feel motivated to do anything. Or you may have the inclination to fill up your and your family’s schedules so there’s little downtime to think. Sometimes grief is more intense in the summer – it’s hard to be sad when everyone else is having fun and being carefree.

Here are some tips that may help someone who is impacted by grief in the summer:

1. Try activities you used to enjoy and see if they are a good fit. If they’re not, that’s OK! If they are, continue to enjoy them!

2. Try an activity in a new way that honors or remembers the person who died. For example, if you lost your uncle who loved camping, plan a camping trip in his honor.

3. Go outside, take a walk, ride a bike, go for a swim. Sunshine helps us produce Vitamin D to help our bodies with its chemical balance.

4. Find others who share your experience. Find a Bereavement Summer Camp, or churches that may offer grief support groups.

5. Remember: it’s OK to have fun and enjoy life after death. Talking to your children and family about summer break can help children address emotions they may not know how to express.

One year ago, the devastating Hill Country floods changed the lives of families across Central Texas.  As emergency responders worked to rescue survivors and restore communities, another need quickly emerged: the need for grief support.

At the Christi Center, we believe that healing doesn’t end when the disaster response does. Grief has no timeline, and for many flood survivors, anniversaries can reopen wounds that never fully healed.

In the days following the floods, the Christi Center responded by providing free grief support and created an online Flood Resources Guide to help survivors navigate grief, trauma, and recovery, while connecting them with trusted local organizations. Our team also collaborated with emergency management agencies, first responders, and nonprofit partners to ensure those affected knew they did not have to face their grief alone.

Today, our commitment to the community continues.

Whether someone lost a family member, a friend, a home filled with memories, or simply the sense of security they once knew, grief can surface in unexpected ways. Anniversaries often bring renewed emotions, making this an important time to acknowledge loss and reach out for support.

Throughout the year, the Christi Center continues to offer:

  • Free, ongoing peer-based grief support groups for adults, children, and teens.
  • Compassionate intake support to help individuals find the services that best meet their needs.
  • Healing workshops that provide education and practical tools for navigating grief.
  • Community education and professional training to equip organizations and service providers with grief-informed practices.

As we reflect on the one-year anniversary of the Hill Country floods, we also honor the resilience of our community. We have witnessed neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers serving the community, and survivors finding strength through connection. Healing is rarely linear, but no one should have to walk the journey alone.

If you or someone you know continues to struggle with grief related to the floods or any loss, the Christi Center is here for you. Our services remain free because we believe that everyone deserves access to hope, healing, and community, regardless of their circumstances.

Together, we remember those we lost, honor the resilience of those who remain, and continue building a community where no one has to grieve alone.

Need support?
Call the Christi Center at 512-467-2600 or complete our intake form at ChristiCenter.org/Get-Started. Our team is here to help you take the first step toward healing.
