It happened just before 6:15 p.m. Monday in Calumet, just west of Oklahoma City. Big, bright flames could be seen through the thick brush surrounding the home.

The Office of the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal said the 42-year-old woman just had her propane tank refilled after several months.

Authorities say the woman was bleeding out the air herself. Investigators say gas had accumulated in the basement, and the home went up in flames when the homeowner went to relight the water tank.

Covered in burns, she ran a quarter of a mile down the road to her closest neighbor.

Neighbors said they could hear her screaming and put her in the shower before calling 911.

The woman was flown by helicopter to Baptist Hospital. Her burns reportedly cover 30 percent of her body.”

A gas furnace uses combustion, a heat exchanger, and a blower to warm a home.
Each type of furnace needs a heating activation method to operate. In a natural gas furnace, heat is produced when the pilot light ignites the burner. The flame warms up a metal heat exchanger, which heats cold air from its intakes. The blower then pushes the warmed air through ducts in the home, raising the indoor temperature. The flame stays lit until the thermostat detects that the air has reached the desired temperature setting, at which point the gas heat will turn off.

An electric furnace uses electricity, coils, and a blower to produce heat.
In an electric furnace, an electronic ignition turns on the heating system. The furnace pulls cold air into an exchanger, where it’s heated over electric heating elements called coils. The unit then pushes warm air into the ductwork by use of a blower fan to heat the home. Of course, the thermostat controls whether an electric furnace is on or off throughout the day. All of the heat produced stays in the home since there’s no venting or flue loss through a chimney.”

That’s an egregious mistake on the part of manufacturers, too. Appliance repair manuals, like car repair manuals, are one of the five key requirements of the right to repair.

The investigation, submitted to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) by PIRG, iFixit, and Repair.org, surveyed 50 appliance makers, 37 appliance technicians, and industry experts. It also reviewed a wide range of academic research on the topic of appliance repair.

“The manufacturers that make our home appliances have an incentive to either monopolize repair or discourage it so that their customers are forced to buy new products,” said Nathan Proctor, senior director of PIRG’s Right to Repair campaign. “People are fed up. It shouldn’t be so hard to access a repair manual. We want dishwashers and refrigerators that are easy to fix and last a long time.””

Skip a Total Shutdown, Use Vacation Mode

If you have a newer tankless water heater, good news. There is little you have to do if you’ll be out of town. Tankless water heaters are largely hands-off. At most, you might consider turning off any features you’ve enabled, such as a high-recirculation frequency that keeps the water preheated, which won’t do any good (and will waste energy) if you’re out of town.

If you have a traditional water heater, however, It might be tempting to completely shut your water heater down if you are out of town for weeks or even months, but we’d recommend avoiding that unless you’re closing down a vacation home for the season and fully winterizing the plumbing.

Instead, it’s much wiser to use “vacation” mode if your water heater has it or to turn it to the lowest possible setting if it doesn’t have a vacation mode. Doing so lowers the temperature of the tank well below the regular operating temperature but still keeps the water heater on.”
