Try listening to Hejira Demos from the Joni Mitchell Archive series vol.4 as this sounds like what you’d be hoping to hear – unfortunately not all of the songs that ended up on Hejira are present (no Refuge of the Roads or Song for Sharon) but as a bonus a couple of early takes of songs that ended up on Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter are present.

This sequence of songs leaves out one important Dylan to Baez song (at least partially to Baez), which is Idiot wind and possibly abandoned love. In that song Dylan mentions “you hurt the ones that I loved best and covered up the truth with lies”. This prompts Baez to say “you are surrounded by parasites and sycophants”.

I have a much different view of highway 61. I think it symbolizes Biblical places like Sodom and Gomorrah. All the characters in the song are parables like Jesus used to describe how wicked the world had become.

I sang this song recently and, as it was written in 1967, had the feeling that it might relate to a drafted soldier in Vietnam. It gave me a new appreciation for the song.
