In reply to Ray Snyder. I was attending Froebel at that time. My mother worked upstairs on the 2nd floor (linen & bath towels?). As you walked into the store from Broadway, take a sharp right turn (past the wide stairs and the up-escalator) and there was the beloved lunch counter with great food and friendly servers.

@jpnearl Linux was like that for me over two decades ago. I started college and got tired of the extra management and things breaking especially with a new kernel update. Plus I had that bizarre need to compile software So two years into my college career I switched to Apple & I’m not ready to call it yet. It just takes a day of work with Windows 11….

That's such a specific, lovely kind of nostalgia being able to identify a washing machine by ear is a whole skill set most people never even knew existed. I've got my own version of that: I can smell rain before it starts falling. I love that you've made peace with the "tempering" impulse enough to still consider sneaking those laundromat photos. Honestly, take the photos. Best case you get some great shots of Filter-Flo survivors in the wild.

In reply to Anon. Your name? I also met my wife at the Copiague grants when we were both 18. Fast forward and we recently celebrated our 44th anniversary. After grants went under I went into another line of work. After 26 years I retired and took a part time position in a store to work in a store for one more Christmas.
