Coolar Box Design:

Durch die thermo-physikalische Energiespeicherfähigkeit der Coolar-Technologie kann auch unterwegs verlässlich ohne große, schwere und häufig auch umweltschädliche Batterien gekühlt werden. Erste Muster können nach Ausheizen (vergleichbar mit Aufladen des Systems) zu Hause oder am Campingplatz vier Tage autark kühlen, ohne die Camping-Batterie zu belasten. Temperatur und Restkühldauer können über ein kleines akkubetriebenes Display abgelesen werden. Der Silica-gel und Wasser basierte thermo-physikalische Energiespeicher ist robust und sehr langlebig und muss nicht wie marktüblichen Camping-Akkus nach wenigen Jahren ausgetauscht werden. Das Kühlsystem benötigt keine schädlichen Kältemittel und es tritt kein störendes Kompressorgeräusch auf. Coolar successfully piloted its grid-independent refrigerator in Kenya. The 100% water-based adsorption cooling technology can provide reliable off-grid cooling for medicines and vaccines in clinics when permanently connected with solar thermal hot water as an energy source in a stationary setting.  Now the development team at Coolar is exploring new use cases for this uniquely sustainable cooling technology.

Not having to rely on power from the grid for reliable cooling is valuable not only to remote clinics in Kenya, but also for camping users. Together with the innovation unit of Erwin Hymer Group SE – the European market leader for camping vehicles – the Coolar product development team is discussing and testing applications of the water-based adsorption cooling system for camping enthusiasts.

Coolar Box Design:

With its thermo-physical energy storage capability the Coolar technology is able to provide cooling on the go without big, heavy and often environmentally harmful batteries. First prototypes were able to cool for four days off-grid after heat energy input (comparable to “charging” the system) at home or at the camp site – without draining the camper’s battery system. Temperature and remaining cooling time can be observed on a small battery-supported display. The silica-gel and water based thermo-physical energy storage is robust and very durable. Unlike conventional camping batteries it does not need to be replaced after only a couple of years of operation. The cooling system works without any harmful refrigerants and there is no annoying noise from a compressor. First tests with Erwin Hymer Group SE have also shown that the system can withstand night-time freezing temperatures if left in a vehicle over the winter.

Beyond this, the team is aiming to use as environmentally and recycling-friendly materials as possible to strengthen the unique sustainability of the camping box.

More and more people turn to air conditioning for relief as climate change drives temperature increases and life-threatening heat waves become more frequent around the globe. Unfortunately, the technology that is currently used for providing this relief is a double-edged sword. In the industrial economies of North America and Europe, the heating of buildings in winter accounts for the biggest share of energy use and carbon emissions that drive global warming. As more countries with warmer climates grow economically, the same is increasingly the case for energy use and carbon emissions linked to air conditioning for indoor comfort and refuge from the heat as well as various commercial applications.Over the past 20 years, energy used for space cooling has roughly doubled according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Unless there is an effective push into more sustainable cooling technologies, it is projected to almost double again over the next ten years and will continue to grow beyond that.

This is hardly surprising. Visitors traveling from the USA to southern Europe are puzzled by the lack of air conditioning across the region, having grown used to the comfort at home. When asked for reasons for Singapore’s economic success, Lee Kuan Yew – the political giant who oversaw the city state’s rise – credited air conditioning. Similarly, without the ubiquity of air conditioning one can’t begin to imagine recent boomtowns like Dubai or Doha – where in defiance of its natural environment the city implemented air conditioning even for certain outdoor spaces.

The IEA predicts that until 2050 the number of air conditioning units in private households will increase to 5.6 bn units from 1.6 bn units currently. The amount of energy required to run the additional 4 bn units is expected to be equivalent to the current annual energy consumption of the USA, EU and Japan combined (IEA, 2018), implying a devastating environmental burden in terms of CO2e emissions from additional energy consumption. This surge in air conditioning usage not only increases energy consumption but also raises concerns about the environmental impact of refrigerants used in these systems. Many current air conditioning units still use hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which have a potential of adding to global warming by thousands of times more than CO2. The release of these refrigerants, through leaks or improper disposal, can make climate change even worse.

This is why Coolar is expanding the use of its sorption technology into air conditioning. From spring 2024, the team has started to develop a hybrid air conditioning system that features a sorption circuit driven by waste heat. By utilising otherwise wasted thermal energy and focusing on sustainable refrigerants like water – as used in Coolar’s previous innovations – this design addresses the two critical environmental concerns in the space cooling industry: energy efficiency and the use of harmful refrigerants. With this approach, Coolar has won the support of Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB) via its Programme for Research, Innovation & Technology (IBB Pro FIT), co-financing by the European Union, and private investors. Over the coming months, Coolar plans to refine this technology further and implement it in a pilot aiming to validate its effectiveness in real-world conditions.

The challenge ahead lies in balancing the essential need for space cooling with our responsibility to protect the planet, making technologies like Coolar’s a potential game-changer in the fight against climate change.

Coolar’s work was highlighted on the official website of Germany’s Ministry of Education and Research this month. The article covers the Coolar team’s successful completion of the EU-funded ARCTICOOL research and development project.

Throughout the project, Coolar developed and validated an innovative two-step adsorption process for the application in off-grid medical refrigerators. This new “double-lift” process proved its advantages over the previously used single-lift process – especially under hot ambient temperatures of 43°C while keeping the refrigerator at between 2 and 8°C.

With the help of this technology, Coolar and its partners aim to improve access to basic healthcare for the close to 1bn people worldwide that are still relying on clinics with no or unreliable electricity and therefore also difficulty of cooling lifesaving medicines and vaccines.

On the national level the project funding was administered by the ministry and the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft und Raumfahrt e.V. – DLR) while the funds originated from the EU’s Eureka Eurostars programme, which also supported the work by the project partner company in Denmark.

Building on the successful results of the project, Coolar and its partners are now taking steps to move the technology from prototype to production and commercialization.

During the field test the refrigerator operated completely independent from the electricity grid and managed to reliably cool the storage compartment inside the refrigerator cabinet to below 8°C, even as outside temperatures reached up to 36°C.

This is the first successful field test of a refrigerator operating with a solar heat powered continuous adsorption cooling system that only uses water as the refrigerant and can be considered a breakthrough for Coolar’s product development activities.

The work on this prototype and the preliminary testing of off-grid autonomous operation of the prototype in Berlin was enabled by the Expo 2020 Dubai’s Expo Live Innovation Impact Grant Programme. The team at Coolar is also grateful to EIT Climate-KIC, whose early-stage support was instrumental in getting the project off the ground, as well as to the students, journalists, members of NGOs, people from the development community or private persons, whose interest and enthusiasm keeps motivating the team to move forward.

After this achievement Coolar will pursue closing its first outside investment round to fund the improvement of the now proven technology for heavy-duty applications in off-grid communities and initiate projects to deploy pilot refrigerators to deliver sustainable cooling to such communities.

After competing in two written application rounds, as well as a final pitch in front of a jury of UN representatives, Expo 2020 management and leading UAE business executives, Coolar won the support of Expo’s Innovation Impact Grant Programme. Global Innovators were selected amongst 70 projects from 42 countries, making them the top three percent out of a total of 2300 applications of innovation projects from 136 countries.

With the support of Expo Live, Coolar will demonstrate its electricity-independent refrigerator in the field and seek a first pilot project with a partner facilitiy in an off-grid developing region of the Global South. There important substances such as life-saving vaccines are currently damaged in 75% of all cases due to inappropriate or unavailable cooling resulting from unreliable electricity supply. Access to reliable cooling can prevent billions in losses each year and contribute significantly to the development of underserved communities. Coolar’s technology can leverage abundant heat from the sun to warm up water and directly power a 100% water-based sorption cooling process to provide electricity-free cooling, without any harmful substances, emissions, or failure-prone and short-lived electronic components or batteries.
As Expo 2020 Vice President and head of Expo Live Yousuf Caires puts it: “Coolar’s ability to turn the problem into the solution demonstrates creativity and ingenuity, which is what we stand for at Expo 2020 Dubai. This environmentally-friendly technology has the potential to benefit both developing and developed countries.”

Successful completion of the project can also lead to being featured during Expo 2020 in Dubai. After having given keynote speech on sustainable cooling technologies at the topic-focused Expo 2017 in Astana,  this in-road to a World Expo marks an even greater chance to promote Coolar’s green cooling technology.
World Expos have a long history of introducing cutting edge technologies and innovations to a global audience. Solutions presented in Dubai will be able to count themselves as part of a long history of World Expo innovation showcases, including the telephone, television, or the first touch screen.

In February 2018 Julia Römer and Coolar were announced as one of 18 finalists who will have a chance at a USD 100,000 prize at the awards ceremony in Singapore on April 26th.

Leading up to the awards ceremony all finalists will receive one on one coaching from established female business leaders, as well as an intense executive education programme at INSEAD Singapore. Coolar and our CEO Julia Römer were selected from close to 2800 applications from around the world.

The awards are looking for female-led businesses that are 2-3 years old and show financial sustainability, high potential for social impact and a creative problem-solving approach. Coolar convinced assessors with the written application submitted in August 2017 and has proven itself in the rigorous on-site due diligence assessment that followed pre-selection.

It was the perfect opportunity to get feedback from the health workers that will use the Coolar refrigerator in the future. The field study was a great success as our miniature demonstrator was well received and questionnaire-based interviews with health centre staff demonstrated the relevance of our technology. 1.2 billion people live without electricity and therefore also have no access to cooling. Coolar offers a most sustainable solution to cool vaccines and medicines in regions with no access to electricity where the general need for health care and especially lifesaving medicines and vaccines that need stable cooling is critical.

The Coolar system’s key advantage is that it requires no electricity. In addition to that it operates without causing any CO2 or harmful refrigerant emissions. It has no significant running costs as it runs on solar heat, which is an abundant and essentially free energy resource in the target regions. Furthermore it works without without moving parts like compressors in conventional refrigerators that put wear on the system and therefore limit the refrigerator’s durability. Especially useful in the case of cooling vaccines is that Coolar’s system comes with no freezing-risk, as conventional solutions often damage vaccines due to accidental freezing.

The concept being validated by the field study, the Coolar team is determined to complete the last steps of the product development and put Coolar’s system on the market!

The feedback from Kenya on our miniature demonstrator was already extremely useful and Coolar is currently running further tests on the new 180 litres prototype with the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) in Potsdam as an independent scientific partner. With ATB, operating conditions under which Coolar’s system will be used are being simulated. This will help the team to foucs product development on the actual needs in the market and make a product fit for its use in remote regions with warm climates.

Coolar is developing an electricity independent, zero emission and highly durable refrigerator to solve the problem of unreliable cooling for lifesaving vaccines and medicine in remote regions. A startup competition The Venture, created by a premium Scotch whiskey brand from Chivas Regal, aims to reward social start-ups that seek to create a positive change in the world. Before the international final, Julia Römer will receive intensive coaching and participate with founders from 27 other countries in The Venture’s Accelerator Week at Oxford University’s Saïd Business School.

On the 5th of November Darboven Idee Prize – the most prestigious award for women with promising business concepts and pioneering business ideas – awarded the prize for the most talented female founders of 2015.

Darboven Idee Prize let young creative women describe their startup idea, become recognised and challenge themselves. “I am convinced that we need courageous women who dare to step into self-employment and who are willing to take an entrepreneurial risk,” said Albert Darboven, owner and managing director of the Hamburg-based company JJ Darboven. “We need more female role models, we need more mixed teams and more women in positions of responsibility”, he added in his speech during the ceremony.

After reviewing 215 applications, the jury invited five finalists to Hamburg to present their innovative ideas. Based on the degree of novelty, already achieved or expected commercial success, personal commitment of the founder and already created or potential jobs, the jury, chaired by Dr. Henning Voscherau, a former Mayor of the City of Hamburg, selected three award winners – Membrasenz, Coolar and HygieneApp.

Proving to be a strong contestant, Coolar, led by founder Julia Römer, claimed the second prize worth 10.000 Euros. “We are extremely proud that we won the second prize of the Darboven Idee Competition”, says Julia Römer. “It gives us a great deal of attention and really good reputation. The money will help us to achieve our goal to get the first pilot projects done.”

Coolar has an innovative solution for a common household appliance – the refrigerator. It involves green pioneer technology and faces the world-wide need to cool medicine and other products in regions where electricity access is still an issue.

“Because of our mission to bring this appliance to regions where cooling is a real problem, we are not only a hardware start-up, but also a social business,” says Julia Römer. Looking forward to starting the first pioneer projects in developing countries already in 2016, Coolar does not only change the way refrigerators work – it fights to make a real impact on people’s lives while preserving vaccines in countries where access to electrical energy is a challenge.

After being selected by an expert jury that screened more than 182 applicants. Who will advance to the final pitch competition is decided by an online public voting.
If Coolar wins the prize, the money will be invested to initiate the field testing for the first Coolar refrigerators for medical cooling in off-grid regions.
“I believe Coolar is an inspiring project, it’s potential impact on environmentally friendly cooling and health care in developing regions should motivate the audience to support us with their vote.” asserted Julia Römer, inventor and co-founder of Coolar.

In order to convince the audience to support Coolar with their votes, the team worked with the Berlin based visual media agency I Like Visuals and produced a video.

Previous to the award ceremony, Coolar co-founders Christoph Göller and Kilian Mähne attended the two-day workshop and met with various professionals working on solar technology, energy storage and micro-grids for remote off-grid applications that took an interest in Coolar’s technology.
“This conference brings together an audience that is highly skilled experiened regarding everything off-grid and particularly in solar technology. These were valuable two days for Coolar, the positive feedback from such an experienced audience encourages us to keep moving forward.” remarked Kilian Mähne, co-founder and responsible for mechanical engineering at Coolar.

From April 2015 onwards, this will not only allow two of the team members to devote all of their time to Coolar, it will also provide office space in the Green Garage on Berlin’s EUREF Campus. The campus is a hub for innovation dealing with energy efficiency and resource scarcity. On top of that and most importantly Coolar will be able to benefit from Climate-KIC Germany’s vast network of other founders, business angels, venture capital investors, as well as start-up coaches and advisors.
“As the original idea for Coolar emerged at the Climate-KIC 2012 Summer School in Zurich and was further developed with the Climate-KIC Greenhouse pre-incubation programme, we are particularly pleased to be able to continue building Coolar within this clean-tech start-up ecosystem”, commented Coolar’s Julia Römer.
