Flecicia Heise began her journey at Palomar College in November 1993 and since taking the helm as Head Athletic Trainer in 1997, she has become one of the most enduring and beloved figures within the department and across the state. For more than 30 years, she has been a constant, steady, trusted presence for countless student-athletes navigating the demands of competition, recovery and everything in between.

Her passion for athletic training took root long before arriving in San Marcos. While pursuing her degree in Kinesiology at California State University, Long Beach, she didn’t just study athletic training, she lived it by gaining hands on experience at A.C.I.C Physical Therapy that would shape her for years to come. From 1985 to 1990, she served as the athletic trainer at El Toro High School. She later earned her Master’s Degree of Education from Azusa Pacific University in 1996.When she’s not covering a game or in the training room, Heise is enjoying life in Oceanside alongside her husband, Tom, and cherishes time with their daughters, Cara and Morgan.

Brian Cable

Cerritos College

Brian Cable has worked as an AT in the Community College system for 27 years, spent 2 years at a high school, 1 year in professional soccer, and is in his 2nd year of working as an athletic trainer in professional motocross. Brian was hired in July 2000 to work with Bev Sweet as an Athletic Trainer at Cerritos College, which is a position in which he still serves.

He has been involved in the 3CATA for many years. He served as the South Coast Conference AT Representative, The Vice-President of the 3CATA, and President of the 3C2A from 2011-2014. As President he oversaw the Form 5 legislation to change Bylaw 9 from Guidelines to Medical Policies, and to create statewide legislation on the concussion policies. He continues to stay involved with our organization as he serves on the Legislation Committee. He also has served on the FWATA CUATC committee and with CATA on the Legislative Action Team.

Brian has always enjoyed teaching as his side job. He spent 15 years teaching in the Athletic Training Program at CSULB and about 20 years of teaching part-time at Cerritos College.

He has received honors including being the AT of the Year for 3CATA in 2015 and the Kinesiology Alumnus o the Year for CSULB in 2010.

Maria Castro has demonstrated a sustained commitment to the advancement of the athletic training profession through her service with the 3CATA. She served as Vice President from 2020–2026 and as President from 2023–2026, providing leadership focused on professional standards, education, and advocacy for athletic trainers across the state.

Her professional career includes more than two decades of service at the community college level as a Certified athletic trainer. Maria served as an athletic trainer at Riverside City College from 2001–2013, followed by Cerritos College from 2013–2019, where she consistently prioritized student-athlete health, safety, and well-being. She continues to be an advocate for the profession in her current role as Athletic Director at Rio Hondo College.

The 3CATA Athletic Trainer of the Year Award honors individuals who exemplify exceptional skills, professionalism and dedication to student-athlete well-being. Maria Castro’s contributions have gone above and beyond her call to service and have left a lasting impact on the organization and the student-athletes she has served.

Mary Aja
Long Beach City College

It is with great honor that we announce the induction of Mary Aja into the California Community College Athletic Trainer Association (3CATA) Hall of Fame, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the field of athletic training, her unwavering dedication to student-athletes, and her leadership within the 3CATA.

Mary Aja has served as the head athletic trainer at Long Beach City College (LBCC) since 1989, where she has been a pillar of support for student-athletes, ensuring their health and well-being throughout her distinguished career. With over 35 years of service at the community college level, Mary has been deeply involved with the 3CATA since its inception, shaping the organization’s foundational structure and contributing to its continued success.

From 1992 to 2001, Mary served as the South Vice President of 3CATA, where she played a critical role in developing the organization’s constitution and bylaws. Her leadership continued as a sport representative and South Coast Conference representative from 1990 to 1996. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mary was integral to the 3CATA’s working group, facilitating the safe return of sports at the community college level. Currently, she serves as the chair for the Professional Development Committee for 3CATA.

Mary’s commitment to education and training is equally exemplary. She began her academic journey at Modesto Junior College, later transferring to California State University, Long Beach, earning both her undergraduate and master’s degrees. As a preceptor and instructor at Long Beach State University’s athletic training program, Mary continues to mentor the next generation of athletic trainers.

Her unwavering dedication to the well-being of student-athletes and her constant pursuit of professional excellence make Mary Aja a deserving inductee into the Hall of Fame. This recognition is a testament to her lifelong commitment to the athletic training profession and to the countless lives she has positively impacted over her remarkable career.

Laurel (Lo) Stender
Cerro Coso College

It is with profound respect and honor that we announce the posthumous induction of Laurel “Lo” Stender into the 3CATA Hall of Fame for her exceptional contributions to Cerro Coso Community College, Coyote Athletics, and the Ridgecrest community.

Lo began her role as the athletic trainer at Cerro Coso Community College in 2016, and from the moment she stepped onto campus, she became the heart and soul of Coyote Athletics. Known for her infectious charisma, unwavering positivity, and unmistakable smile, Lo was the light and energy that radiated through every corner of the athletic program. She touched the lives of countless athletes, coaches, staff, and members of the community, becoming a beloved figure in Ridgecrest.

Tragically, Lo passed away in an accident while engaging in her beloved canyoneering activity along the Kern River. Those who knew her understand that Lo was driven by adventure, always challenging herself physically. She thrived in activities like ultra-marathons, hiking, snowshoeing, rock climbing, dirt biking, and anything that allowed her to embrace the outdoors and push her physical limits.

Born and raised in Barstow, California.  She pursued her bachelor’s degree at San Jose State University, where she competed at the Division I level in cross-country. After earning her bachelor’s degree from SJSU, Lo pursued a master’s degree in Kinesiology in Las Vegas, Nevada. 

Lo’s legacy is woven deeply into the fabric of Cerro Coso Community College and Coyote Athletics. She was a constant, dependable presence—always available to her athletes, day or night. Lo dedicated herself to providing top-tier care to her athletes, earning their trust and respect in the process. Whether running across a field to treat an injured player, driving team vans, hitting fungoes for the baseball team, or sharing laughs with fans and family, Lo’s energy was contagious. She went above and beyond in every role she played, always with a smile on her face.

Lo’s professionalism, kindness, flexibility, and dedication were exemplary. She became more than just an athletic trainer to her athletes—she was a mentor, a friend, and a constant source of support. Her work ethic and compassion left a lasting impression on everyone she worked with, and her presence continues to be felt throughout the Coyote Athletics program.

Above all, Lo’s commitment to Cerro Coso, her community, and her athletes was unparalleled. She was a positive force who inspired others to give their best, on and off the field. As we honor Lo’s memory with her posthumous induction into the Hall of Fame, we do so with deep gratitude for the legacy she left behind. Coyote Athletics will continue to uphold the values Lo instilled in us—dedication, compassion, and excellence—and strive to honor her memory in all that we do.

Lo will be profoundly missed, but her spirit and impact will live on in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Appreciation Award:

Dr. Quincy Wang, Long Beach City & El Camino College

Dr. Wang is being honored for his outstanding service as a team physician for multiple community colleges in the southern Los Angeles area. His dedication to the athletic training profession is evident through his invaluable support in assisting athletic trainers with complex cases. Dr. Wang is a true ally to the profession, offering his time and expertise to ensure the best possible care for his patients and his community.

Kelly Wierema, Riverside City College

Kelly is being recognized for her instrumental role in growing membership within the 3CATA organization. Through her efforts to digitize administrative processes, Kelly has helped streamline operations and increase membership. She is also an active volunteer at the annual 3CATA meeting and consistently works to elevate the profession of athletic training.

Special Service Award:

Todd Babcock, Riverside City College

Todd has been an essential member of the 3CATA for over 20 years. His development of the 3CATA website and his role as treasurer have significantly strengthened the organization. Todd’s leadership has created greater transparency and accessibility, ensuring the continued success of the 3CATA and its initiatives.

Juan Cuevas, Fullerton College

Juan has been responsible for public relations and social media for the 3CATA, elevating the visibility of the organization and showcasing the hard work of its members. His efforts have enhanced the 3CATA’s outreach and engagement, contributing to the growth and recognition of the organization.

2025 Scholarship Award Winners:

We are proud to award scholarships to three outstanding student sports medicine interns who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and achievement in their studies and internships:

Karla Jimenez, Foothill College

Karla has interned at Foothill College since April 2024, assisting the sports medicine staff with rehabilitation plans and emergency care. She plans to transfer to the University of the Pacific to continue her studies in sports medicine.

Phoenix Keoki Ragasa Fontecha, Foothill College

Phoenix has been an integral part of the Foothill College sports medicine team since 2024, assisting with emergency care and strength & conditioning programs. He plans to transfer to San Jose State University to further his studies in sports medicine.

Jazmin Camarena Lopez, College of the Desert

Jazmin has shown exceptional commitment as an intern at the College of the Desert Sports Medicine Center since 2024. She has been involved in clinic coverage, volunteering at Division I softball tournaments, and presenting to COD’s Board of Trustees on behalf of the Sports Medicine Intern Program. Jazmin is exploring transfer options to continue her education.

Full-time (12 months) classified Certified Athletic Trainer.  Salary range is $6,161.15 to $7,795.81 monthly.  The closing date is 3/20/25.  The work schedule is listed as 6am – 2:30pm, Monday to Friday.

David has served as the athletic trainer at Hartnell College since 1994, marking 30 years of service at the community college level. Throughout his career, he has been an integral part of 3CATA, actively contributing to the advancement of athletic training in California.

Currently, David serves as the 3CATA conference representative for the Coast Conference (North), acting as a vital liaison for athletic trainers in the region. He is also the chair of the 3CATA Legislative Committee, where he plays a crucial role in ensuring the association remains up to date with evolving NCAA and 3C2A legislation. In addition, he serves as the athletic training representative for 3C2A Track and Field. His expertise and commitment to advocating for best practices in sports medicine have helped shape policies that enhance the safety and well-being of community college student-athletes.

“David Beymer has been a constant advocate for the student-athletes within 3CATA,” said Maria Castro, President of CCCATA. “His dedication to 3CATA as a conference representative, sports representative, and committee chair allows us to be at the forefront of healthcare for our community college athletic programs. This is a well-deserved honor for David.”

As the first shock and disbelief subside and we realize that our beloved 3CATA member from Cerro Coso Community College has transitioned from our world to eternity. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family as we honor her life, and hold her in fond memory.

Lo was everything a Community College Athletic Trainer should be. She was kind and soft spoken, yet held her line. She cared deeply about the wellbeing of her patients, whether they were members of her Coyote Family or visiting student athletes. Every student and coach who has come in contact with Lo always came back talking about how awesome she is. 

Her kind, composed nature and infectious smile made her very approachable. She was a light in our profession and in this world. Lo will be deeply missed far beyond the boundaries of Cerro Coso Community College, the Kern Community College District and the Inland Empire Athletic Conference. She has touched so many lives and shared so many smiles. The world truly is a better place because Lo walked on it. 

Many of us are grateful that we got to see and hug Lo one last time at the beginning of this month during the inaugural 3CATA conference in Palm Springs. 

We hope heaven has many adventures for Lo.
