How to improve your mental health during the pandemic
Don’t isolate yourself from the world reconnect with friends and family regularly, drop them a message or give them a call to keep in touch. Video communications like FaceTime, Zoom and Teams are great for face to face contact. Otherwise you can contact a helpline for emotional support if you don’t feel comfortable talking to family and friends.

Social media is an addiction which can cause detrimental effects from too much exposure, this dependence is harmful to us socially, physically and mentally. It’s important we separate the real world from our digital worlds, we often get in a harsh cycle of self-comparison, jealousy and unsatisfactory expectations. We should instead try using social media as a reward after completing an important task.

Learn something new, take up hobbies or carry on doing activities that you enjoy. You could try reading a book, watching a movie, exercising, cooking new recipes or experiment with relaxation techniques.

Eat well-balanced meals and make sure you are drinking the recommended amount of water (1.2 liters). A healthy body creates a healthy mind.

Daily exercise is essential, it can relieve stress, help your sleep better and improve your overall mood. If the gyms not for you why not try a live online class at home via Instagram or stick on a fitness YouTube video.

Create a daily routine that priorities looking after yourself, experiment with setting new goals each day, and work to achieve them. This will give your day a sense of purpose which will contribute to a healthy mind.

Take time to relax, meditate or try yoga this will help us have a clearer and calmer mind aiding positive thinking and concentration.

It’s important we recharge our bodies for the next day, try to maintain a regular sleeping pattern, and stick to it. This is essential for helping a person maintain optimal health and well-being. The NHS advises an average person needs between 6-9 hours of sleep each night, they also have tips on how to ensure you get that right amount if you’re finding it difficult. There are also many apps available such as Calm and Headspace that focus on helping you sleep. How To Sleep Better: 25 Tips From 25 People

When at home open windows when possible to ensure a fresh air supply or sit in your garden and take in the natural surroundings. Remember you can still see six friends and go for a long socially distanced walk in the park, seeing familiar faces will brighten up your day.

There are now a range of apps on the market focused on helping individuals cope with anxiety, depression and not being able to sleep.

Try to do as many of the above as possible and always remember there are people at hand to help you in difficult times no matter how big or small your problem may be.
Available on iOS and Android
Headspace has one aim, to improve the health and happiness of the world. The app does this by teaching meditation and mindfulness with guided meditations, animations, articles and videos.
ReWi offers a simple way of creating and tracking goals as well as making you think about how you feel once you have completed it and why that’s important.
Calm has a wide selection of uses from meditation to stories that are specifically designed to help you get to sleep.
Silver Cloud sees users work through a series of topics picked out by a therapist to address specific needs. The app uses Cognitive Behavioural therapy techniques which lasts eight weeks and is designed to be completed at a pace that works best for you.
Feeling Good offers audio tracks that blend soothing music with gentle coaching to help with stress, anxiety and depression.

]]>The post Black owned beauty brands that are not just for now but forever appeared first on Benito.
]]>It’s Black history month and here at Benito HQ we are here to showcase tried and tested black owned beauty brands that we are loving right now. In the past the beauty industry hasn’t been as inclusive as we may have liked, with brands offering minimal shade options that don’t cater to different skin textures. Finding the right products for skin, hair and body may still be a disappointing experience for black women, however we are starting to see a shift when it comes to brands designing products that are diverse and can be used by anybody no matter their skin type and tone. This initial shift is down to the black owned beauty brand founders who have highlighted the lack of diversity and took it upon themselves to change this. Although the industry still has a long way to go with brands needing to listen and learn how they can improve to accommodate all consumers.
The British makeup artist Pat McGrath owns a global beauty company that’s now valued at more than 1 billion dollars. She’s worked on endless runway shows and became very popular over the years working with big brands such as Christian Dior, Prada and Giorgio Armani. Her main aim for the brand was to bring makeup for all skin tones to the forefront working with pigments to make sure they work on all skin tones. The brand has 36 universal colour choices and five shade levels curated for all skin tones, types and undertones. The brand shows inclusivity is by using a wide range of models including all shapes, sizes and genders.
“I was always mixing up colours because there wasn’t anything out there for black skin” Pat McGrath.

Fenty Beauty is a cosmetics brand known for its wide inclusivity across all skin tones and genders. After seeing a gap in the industry, founder Rihanna launched the makeup line to ensure everyone could be catered for. Fenty focuses on producing products for hard to match skin tones by creating formulas that work for all skin types and textures. The range is created for everyone to love with 50 universal foundation shades to match any skin tone.

Uoma Beauty is one of the most inclusive black owned beauty brands, founded by Nigerian born former beauty executive Sharon Chuter. The brand sees themselves as an empowered tribe that all are welcome to join. Uoma exists to “re-write the rules of inclusivity and diversity to create a world of beauty that truly is for all of us” offering a range of shades, colours and consistencies in all of its products. The brand sets out to celebrate consumers differences whether that be skin colour, size or sexual orientation.
“The world is beautiful because we are all different and colourful in our unique way, and this is why Uoma Beauty exists,” Shanon Chuter.

After years of trying to fit in with society Tracee Ellis Roos damaged her hair by using chemical relaxers, texturisers and tight ponytails. At 15 she decided to begin her healing journey by self-education and experimentation seeing what products worked for her natural hair. She created Pattern Beauty to focus on hair health to encourage each hair texture to take up as much space as it desires. The brand aims to celebrate and embrace natural hair focusing on curly, coiled and textured styles. Their affordable products help maintain, hydrate and nourish natural hair by using safe ingredients. The brand donates to organisations that support the empowerment of both women and people of colour.
“Don’t feel the need to tame, control or stifle your curls & coils. Let them free.” Pattern.

Liha Beauty is a natural, organic, 100% vegan, cruelty free skincare brand that’s free from parabens, sls and chemicals. Founded by Liha Okunniwa and Abi Oyepitan the brand fuses “African roots and quintessentially British attitudes”. Sustainability, self-care and slow living is at the heart of the brand, all the packaging is recyclable, reusable and produced in the UK by a family run business. Many of their products are multipurpose and can be applied everywhere on the body, face, hair, hands and feet. Their Gold Shea Butter is one of their best-selling products created using all-natural Nigerian ingredients. The brands website journal also highlights important themes of self-love, body acceptance and switching to a zero-waste lifestyle.

]]>For years shapewear has been given this negative stigma and we associate a ‘Mrs Doubfire’ moment when we think of shapewear. Last week Kim Kardashian West introduced Skims a new line of shapewear to the UK to get rid of that old image and change women’s minds and approach when choosing the right shapewear. The range is now available across all Selfridges stores; London, Manchester, Birmingham and online. This UK launch features over 160 Skims products ranging in price from £8-£150 including their popular body suits, waist trainers and solution shorts. All designed to enhance, lift, smooth and tone there’s an option for everybody!
Gone are days of having friends to help you get in and out of shapewear, no more deep lines across your waist from all of the digging in. Skims truly believes that solution wear is supposed to be comfortable and pain free and that’s why it’s so adaptable to everyday wear rather than just occasion wear. Skims offer “inclusive solution wear” focused to find the right support, coverage and shade for each individual. Their advanced construction techniques give a smoother flatter silhouette and seamless technology that sculpts and lifts.
We have tried the Skims core control high rise at Benito HQ and have raving reviews, it can be used under dresses, jeans yet you feel like you can breathe underneath even when eating a big meal. I did not feel conscious that anyone can see you have shapewear on as the colour was matched so perfectly.
“I believe that every person should have access to great shapewear, underwear and loungewear, I want women to feel comfortable and confident in whatever they are wearing” Kim Kardashian West.

Selfridges | Instagram
It wouldn’t be a Kim Kardashian moment if we didn’t have an instagrammable shopping experience. Head to Selfridges Instagram and check out their highlights page to experience their opening. If you can make a trip it would definitely be worth it and beneficial to see what colour you are and then you can make online purchases going forwards. Selfridges also launched a virtual life drawing class on their Instagram page where Kardashian West posed for a series of images wearing items from the collection. Fans were then able to interpret the image however they like and upload it via social media for a chance to be picked to feature on Selfridges Instagram page by Kardashian West herself.

The in-store experience included biscuits, napkins and coffee cups decorated with the Skims logo for the public to pick up. The coffee names even linked with the tonal theme “Coco Espresso”, “Sand Latte”, “Clay Cappuccino” and “Sienna Americano”.

Selfridges, Birmingham.
The collection includes nine different tonal hues to fit every skin tone.
The items are available in sizes from XXS to 5XL all designed to enhance, smooth and shape every curve.
The clothing line features shapewear, underwear, bras, loungewear, and accessories such as body tape, nipple covers and face masks.

Staff and students will be required to work remotely with only essential staff on campus. There will be restricted access to some of the facilities and the majority of buildings within the campus will be closed.
Many universities are opting for online lectures this Autumn, video communication sites like Microsoft Teams and Zoom are becoming the norm for a lot of students.
This year’s freshers’ week will be virtual events that students will attend without having to leave their bedroom halls.
Walking around the campus may be different, universities are imposing a one-way pedestrian system to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Like every other public building it is compulsory to wear a face mask inside all university buildings unless you’re exempt from health reasons.
Social distancing is key when on campus, keeping 2 metres apart from those you do not live with where possible. Some universities have installed Perspex screens to keep social distancing in place.
Some universities are segregating halls by course topics allowing students to stay in their bubbles both at home and whilst learning reducing interaction with people from other bubbles.
Universities have introduced enhanced cleaning measures including more frequent cleaning of rooms and shared areas, also increased availability of handwashing and sanitisation facilities.
Improved ventilation has been introduced to help reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus, opening windows and doors will also increase the supply of fresh air flow.
Student timetables have been modified to stagger arrival and departure times reducing the number of students coming in and out the building at any one time.
Here are Benito’s top tips for the new ways of uni life
Stay fit and healthy by signing up to your local gym or simply exercise outdoors
Arrange a fun quiz night over Teams or Zoom with your friends
Clubs are closed but that doesn’t stop you from drinking with your roommates
Plan a weekly movie night with your household – don’t forget the snacks!
Discover and get involved with your university societies
Organise regular FaceTime calls with family and friends
Hopefully this has given you some inspiration on how to utilise your time whilst keeping positive. It’s difficult to say how long these restrictions will last however its possible they could be eased in the second term of university if the situation improves. Be mindful of your mental health during these times, Public Health England have published Guidance on mental health and wellbeing during COVID-19. Charities such as Mind exist to make sure no one has to face a mental health problem alone.
Despite all this, the good news is there is light at the end of the tunnel, students have been told they can go home at Christmas! How many will return if the current situation continues?

]]>The post Top 8 Tips to Avoid Maskne appeared first on Benito.
]]>Now that wearing a protective face mask has become a part of our daily routine you may have noticed the part of your skin that usually gets covered by the mask can get drier and breakouts may appear. We have some skincare tips that will help your skin get back to its healthier condition.
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser as oil and sweat can cause breakouts, it’s key to remove any signs before putting your mask on.
This cleanser gently exfoliates the skin with salicylic acid, to smooth dry rough and bumpy skin.

As the skin under the mask does not get to breathe it’s important to bring its balance back. Always opt for a gel textured moisturiser as it will hydrate and soothe your skin without being overly sticky and heavy. Stay away from products that have fragrance.
This calming gel hydrates and soothes sensitive skin without being greasy.

Dermaplaning is a great way of exfoliating it removes the layer of dead skin cells that may be clogging your pores. By doing this your skin will receive more oxygen resulting in a smoother complexation, it will also make your cleanser and moisturiser more effective.
For an at home product effortlessly decongest oily skin with this fast-absorbing formula that works to remove dead cells from both the surface of the skin and from within the pores.

If you have oily skin, we advise using an oil balancing toner this will help keep sebum production at bay. Also stay away from toners that contain alcohol as these will dry out your skin.
Described as a clarifying tonic with AHAs, antioxidants, and balancing probiotics, this toner aims to help clear skin and minimise the appearance of pores.

Chapped dry lips are common face-mask skin problems. You can prevent this by applying Vaseline regularly throughout the day.
Vaseline’s Lip Therapy balms ensure lips stay hydrated and smooth, choose from their four scents: Original, Aloe, Cocoa Butter and Rosy Lips.

To reduce breakouts, we advise opting for a cotton mask. Cotton is a natural fabric that feels soft, perfect for if you have sensitive skin as this will not cause any irritation. It’s also a breathable fabric which will fit snug but allow you to breathe comfortably. You should wash cotton masks daily, wear a clean mask each time and remember to wash your face after removing it, this will ensure you don’t get a build-up of bacteria on your skin.
Makeup worn under a mask is more likely to clog your pores and lead to acne breakouts. Try to keep your makeup to a minimum and avoid wearing it in the parts that will be covered by the mask, try only wearing eye and brow products. If wearing makeup under the mask is necessary, make sure to use oil free products.
If you do breakout in acne and blemishes after wearing makeup then a targeted spot treatment can speed up the healing process, while reducing irritation and redness. This specifically targets oily, blemished and acne prone skin, only apply to concerned areas.

We have found that taking a 10-minute break from the mask can help keep your skin clear as this allows the skin the breathe properly throughout the day. Only remove your mask when it’s safe to do so and after washing your hands. An example of a safe place to remove your mask would be outdoors when you are at least six feet away from people and inside a car when you’re either alone or with somebody from your household.
