If this is your first time here, a Community is like an “open-mic” night for Playwrights.

PLAYWRIGHTS: If you’ve got some pages (you can bring virtual pages if you need) that you want heard, a Community Night is the PERFECT place!

ACTORS: Bring YOURSELVES, and be ready to cold-read up to 10 pages of new work!

This one will be open to Female-identified playwrights, so if you have a couple pages (up to 10), come on by! Playwrights will be responsible for your own pages, so please bring copies. If that feels prohibitive, please reach out to us! ACTORS of all gender-indentities are welcomed to attend!

It’s always best to arrive prior to 7:30pm so that you can gather pages and cast. That’s the beauty and the fun of a community night!

REMEMBER, this event is IN PERSON. We’ll be at the Producers Hub offices at 561 7th Avenue on the corner of 7th and 40th.

He received his MFA from NYU’s Graduate Acting Program and is the founder of Thermostat Media. His producing credits include Ben and Suzanne: A Reunion in 4 Parts (SXSW), Close Talkers, and Self//Tape (with Cinereach). His play A Letter Too debuted at National Black Theatre. As an actor, Doron has appeared on Broadway in To Kill a Mockingbird, The Piano Lesson, and Our Town. Doron uses his wide variety of artistic talents as a vehicle for expanding the joy, curiosity and imagination of art in every story.

In 2020, Blackboard Plays and Parent Artist Advocacy League (PAAL) partnered to uplift the experiences of Black Parenthood. The Black Motherhood and Parenting New Play Festival was established to tell stories of Black families, by Black parents and caregivers.

Dismantling systemic racism through art requires the creation of platforms and opportunities to tell stories that illuminate the reality, obstacles, pain, joy, celebration, humor, revelation, and even mundane aspects of the human experience lived by BIPOC individuals.

BMPFest is our response to create storytelling representation through art.

That’s right… SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY is going to Broadway, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this news! The play has a very special place in Blackboard Plays history.

Ten years ago, on Monday, January 11, 2016, we gathered at our old home on 23rd street, the cell, for a feature reading of a new play by Jocelyn Bioh. We were excited to feature Jocelyn’s work and after a DM conversation and an email exchange in early November of 2015, settled on the date.

Looking back at the photos now, it’s incredible to see the collection of artists gathered, and the excitement the community had over Jocelyn’s work. This was back in the “Facebook Event RSVP via email” days. No Google form to capture. Each name that came in was marked down.

Founder, Garlia Cornelia Jones met the artists at the cell with her 18 month old in tow, opened the space and they rehearsed in the afternoon before the 7:30pm reading began.

It was a very packed house!

Just let those names sink in. You can find the artists on Broadway, off Broadway, on television and in films. We’re honored to be connected to such brilliance and history. If the photos say anything, we’re pretty sure you can feel the energy in that room. It was an incredible reading, and the beginning of something really special.

Since that Blackboard reading on a cold January evening, Jocelyn’s play has gone on to have more than 75 productions. It had a world premiere in October of 2017 at MCC, then a successful run until 2018 at MCC and Center Theatre Group. During the Summer of 2023, its U.K. premiere was at London’s Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. PLUS: it won the 2018 Lortel Award for Best Play and three Drama Desk Award nominations! Did we miss anything?? What. a. journey.

We’re proud to have played a tiny part, and cannot wait for what’s next! We will be following this production closely and sharing updates as SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY makes its way to Broadway in September of 2026 at Manhattan Theatre Club. The production will be directed by Whitney White, a trailblazing multi-hyphenate artist that also directed Jocelyn’s previous Broadway hit, “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding”.

Cristina is a multi-hyphenate artist from Puriscal, Costa Rica, working in acting, directing, playwriting, and dance. A University of Costa Rica graduate and Atlantic Acting School alumna, she most recently made her NYC debut with her one-woman show The Sisterhood at The Tank.

Travis Raeburn (Chima / Chauncey / Foreign Voice)

Travis Raeburn is a first-generation Grenadian-Haitian actor. He was recently honored at MCC’s 25 Years Miscast alongside Sheryl Lee Ralph for his accomplishments in theater and education. Selected theatre credits include Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival’s By The Queen and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd; MCC Theater’s Soft; Packages O’ The Things We Deliver with The National Black Theatre; Acting Company’s national tour of Romeo & Juliet / Three Musketeers; and In The Southern Breeze at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater.

On screen, his credits include Hulu’s Wu-Tang: An American Saga, Only Murders in the Building (new season), the film Moonluck Wonton, Survival of the Thickest, and First Match on Netflix. He has appeared in commercials for MasterCard USA, Xfinity, and Pop Tarts. His self-published poetry collection, Kill Me In My Innocence, is available now. At an overwhelmingly white workplace where appearance is everything, a long-suffering receptionist finds herself in personal, professional, and psychic jeopardy when her ruthless boss hires a hip new employee in an effort to improve the company’s image and “culture.” Suddenly, the two young, Black social climbers are forced together and torn apart by their race, ambition, and otherworldly circumstances. JORDANS is a story of identity mistaken, power subverted, and rage unleashed. Don’t miss this bold new play directed by Obie Award winner Whitney White about what it takes to stay on top.

ABOUT THE PLAY: In The Underground Color Wheel, we follow the twenty-year journey of painter Ivory Nichols. Despite coming from humble beginnings, Ivory doesn’t dream of being a good artist, he dreams of being a great artist. As his success grows and he begins to see his biggest dreams coming true, he finds the support of his “Ebony Mona Lisa,” Ashlyn, his best friend, Enzo, and his assistant, Lorelei. As time goes by and the pressures of success weigh heavier, the line between his art and his life begin to blur, putting everything on the line.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Cris Eli Blak’s work has been produced around the world. He is the winner of the Black Broadway Men Playwriting Initiative and is currently the artist in residence at the State University of New York – Oswego and the recipient of the Emerging Playwrights Fellowship from The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre.

ABOUT THE PLAY: Before Abbott Elementary, there was Patrice at Dartmouth Day School….Shortly before Christmas break, a third grader named Sharifa stands in front of her class and says, “Santa Claus is a black man from Detroit,” sending the school into an uproar. To quell the storm, Patrice Patterson, the school’s only black teacher, is asked to create an ad campaign within the school to make Santa white again. As events unfold, Sharifa’s enrollment is placed in jeopardy, and Patrice must decide how to protect Sharifa and ultimately herself. This absurdist comedy examines how race and racial bias can have a foothold on one of the most benign figures—Santa Claus.

“The Golden Loc” by Prentiss Matthews III

Dates: Friday, June 28 and Sunday, June 30, 2024

ABOUT THE PLAY: The Golden Loc is a TYA (Theater for Young Audience) play inspired by African Mythology. The story centers on a little Black girl (Zia) who learns to embrace her unique locs, beauty, and magic within. The show explores Aziza Faires which are magical African Fairies who have elemental abilities. The Aziza Fairies also offer spiritual and emotional guidance to young Zia as she trains to become a Fairy protector. Will she succeed and learn to harness her power from within? We shall see. The play explores themes of Afrofantasy, Afrocentricity, Self Love, Healing, and sisterhood. 

“Crooked Parts” by Azure D. Osborne-Lee

Dates: Friday, June 28 and Sunday, June 30, 2024

ABOUT THE PLAY: “Crooked Parts” is a family dramedy set in yesterday and today. Freddy, a Black queer trans man, returns to his family home in the South after his fiancé breaks up with him. Once there, Freddy must navigate the tension created by his transition and his brother’s serial incarceration. Meanwhile, in his past, 13 year-old Winifred struggles to balance her relationship with her mother with her desire to better fit in with her peers. Crooked Parts is poignant, queer, funny, and definitely definitely Black.

“The Sisters Grey” by Lori Roper

Dates: Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30, 2024

The Sisters Grey, provides a true illumination of the relationships among African American and Jewish people. The Sisters Grey is a multi-ethnic, interdenominational work.  In addition to an honest discussion about race, The Sisters Grey unveils the unspoken complexities within female relationships; especially those which are interracial.  Furthermore, an intergenerational cast provides a stark discussion about the significance of roots, the mythology at the heart of prejudice and the lingering malaise from centuries of misunderstanding and bigotry.  This modern-day comedy centers on two sisters-in-law: one African American, the other European American.  The cast will consist of three African American characters, one African (Nigerian) character and two European-American Jewish characters.
