Remembering Billy Graham. For more than 60 years, pastor Billy Graham inspired countless people around the world with his sermons. On Wednesday, February 21, he passed away at his home in North Carolina after struggling with numerous illnesses over the past few years. He was 99 years old. Raised on a dairy farm in N.C., Graham used the power of new technologies, like radio and television, to spread his message of personal salvation to an estimated 215 million people globally, while simultaneously reflecting on technology’s limitations. Reciting the story of King David to audiences at TED1998, “David found that there were many problems that technology could not solve. There were many problems still left. And they’re still with us, and you haven’t solved them, and I haven’t heard anybody here speak to that,” he said, referring to human evil, suffering, and death. To Graham, the answer to these problems was to be found in God. Even after his death, through the work of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, led by his son Franklin, his message of personal salvation will live on. (Watch Graham’s TED Talk)

Fashion inspired by Black Panther. TED Fellow and fashion designer Walé Oyéjidé draws on aesthetics from around the globe to create one-of-a-kind pieces that dismantle bias and celebrate often-marginalized groups. For New York Fashion Week, Oyéjidé designed a suit with a coat and scarf for a Black Panther-inspired showcase, sponsored by Marvel Studios. One of Oyéjidé’s scarves is also worn in the movie by its protagonist, King T’Challa. “The film is very much about the joy of seeing cultures represented in roles that they are generally not seen in. There’s villainy and heros, tech genius and romance,” Oyéjidé told the New York Times, “People of color are generally presented as a monolithic image. I’m hoping it smashes the door open to show that people can occupy all these spaces.” (Watch Oyéjidé’s TED Talk)

Nuclear energy advocate runs for governor. Environmentalist and nuclear energy advocate Michael Shellenberger has launched his campaign for governor of California as an independent candidate. “I think both parties are corrupt and broken. We need to start fresh with a fresh agenda,” he says. Shellenberger intends to run on an energy and environmental platform, and he hopes to involve student environmental activists in his campaign. California’s gubernatorial election will be held in November 2018. (Watch Shellenberger’s TED Talk)

Can UV light help us fight the flu? Radiation scientist David Brenner and his research team at Columbia University’s Irving Medical Center are exploring whether a type of ultraviolet light known as far-UVC could be used to kill the flu virus. To test their theory, they released a strain of the flu virus called H1N1 in an enclosed chamber and exposed it to low doses of UVC. In a paper published in Nature’s Scientific Reports, they report that far-UVC successfully deactivated the virus. Previous research has shown that far-UVC doesn’t penetrate the outer layer of human skin or eyes, unlike conventional UV rays, which means that it appears to be safe to use on humans. Brenner suggests that far-UVC could be used in public spaces to fight the flu. “Think about doctors’ waiting rooms, schools, airports and airplanes—any place where there’s a likelihood for airborne viruses,” Brenner told Time. A beautiful sculpture for Madrid. For the 400 anniversary of Madrid’s Plaza Mayor, artist Janet Echelman created a colorful, fibrous sculpture, which she suspended above the historic space. The sculpture, titled “1.78 Madrid,” aims to provoke contemplation of the interconnectedness of time and our spatial reality. The title refers to the number of microseconds that a day on Earth was shortened as a result of the 2011 earthquake in Japan, which was so strong it caused the planet’s rotation to accelerate. At night, colorful lights are projected onto the sculpture, which makes it an even more dynamic, mesmerizing sight for the city’s residents. (Watch Echelman’s TED Talk)

A graduate program that doesn’t require a high school degree. Economist Esther Duflo’s new master’s program at MIT is upending how we think about graduate school admissions. Rather than requiring the usual test scores and recommendation letters, the program allows anyone to take five rigorous, online courses for free. Students only pay to take the final exam, the cost of which ranges from $100 to $1,000 depending on income. If they do well on the final exam, they can apply to MIT’s master’s program in data, economics and development policy. “Anybody could do that. At this point, you don’t need to have gone to college. For that matter, you don’t need to have gone to high school,” Duflo told WBUR. Already, more than 8,000 students have enrolled online. The program intends to raise significant aid to cover the cost of the master’s program and living in Cambridge, with the first class arriving in 2020. (Watch Duflo’s TED Talk)

“It looks like it’s holding up the clouds.” “It’s like a sky jellyfish.” “I love how the light moves across it along with the sound.”

Janet Echelman: Taking imagination seriously Janet Echelman: Taking imagination seriously These were some of the comments heard at TED2014 about Skies Painted with Unnumbered Sparks, a collaboration between sculptor Janet Echelman and data artist Aaron Koblin. This monumental sculpture stretched 745 feet, from the Vancouver Convention Centre where TED was held, over an open-air plaza on the edge of Vancouver Harbor and up to the top of the Fairmont Waterfront hotel. Every night while the temporary sculpture was installed, from March 15-22, 2014, dozens of people could be seen across the street setting up cameras and tripods to capture the glowing spectacle. Meanwhile, underneath the sculpture, even greater numbers of people gathered, most of them with their phones out. Using a phone, they could draw lines, squiggles, webs, and water drop rings onto the sculpture’s lush purples, blues, pinks and oranges.

“The lighting on the sculpture is actually a giant website,” Koblin says. “It’s one huge Google Chrome window spread across five HD projectors. The content is being rendered in WebGL. It uses Javascript and shaders to render particles and sprites based on user motion, which is transmitted from mobile browser to our rendering browser via websockets. There are a lot of moving pieces here, from the local area network to the server (written in Go), to the sound system (also running in Chrome with Web Audio API) all the way through the LED light control system, which pulls pixel data directly from the browser.”

The end result: Viewers of the art were also a part of its creation, swiping and tapping on their screen to change the piece overhead. (You at home can get a taste of what the experience was like using this interactive WebGL model of the sculpture.)

“It’s exciting to see so many people engaging with the sculpture,” Koblin told the TED Blog. “I’ve been particularly pleased with the conversations that have started between complete strangers standing beneath. It’s had the effect of bringing people together.”

Echelman sensed the same thing. “I’ve been surprised at how many people come up to tell me how much the sculpture has meant to them. One woman whose husband is undergoing cancer treatment told me the sculpture made her feel protected,” she said. “I’ve been surprised at the photographic response. So many people are sharing their phone photos, which are beautiful and ethereal, and dozens of people have been lining up each night with their tripods to photograph. I love that the sculpture could be a catalyst for all these people engaging in their own creative act.”

In a short talk at TED2014 about the sculpture, Echelman thanked the team of hundreds who helped. She especially thanked Autodesk, who designed custom 3D software to allow her ambitious vision to be manifested in reality and who were the principal sponsors of the work. She also thanked Koblin and Google for designing and powering the interactive artwork, enabling people to “choreograph light on the sculpture, to play with the sky.”

“I create sculpture that makes me feel protected, yet connected to limitless sky,” says Janet Echelman, the artist who gave the TED2011 talk “Taking imagination seriously.”

Echelman’s sculptures resemble netting — gigantic, beautifully draped, brightly colored and installed overhead. In fact, she’s noticed something about her installed works that she never expected to happen: People gather underneath the sculptures and use them as a social place.

“I started thinking about social spaces and how they’ve been built for millennia,” she says. “The Colosseum in Rome had a textile covering called a ‘velarium.’ In addition to shielding spectators, I imagine it gave them a sense of togetherness. I asked myself: what would a velarium for our time be?”

Echelman’s newest work may just be the answer. It’s a 745-foot sculpture hanging just outside the entrance to TED, suspended to the Vancouver Convention Centre and the Fairmont Waterfront hotel. Creating a sculpture of this size and magnitude was a vast undertaking and Echelman points out that she had help from a team of hundreds. Autodesk built a design tool for the project that helped her to “create sculpture at this scale and complexity.” Echelman also teamed with TED speaker Aaron Koblin—who she met at TED2011 when he gave the talk “Artfully visualizing our humanity.” The head of the Google Data Arts Group, Koblin “created this playful interactive artwork that enables people to choreograph light on the sculpture, to play with the sky,” she says.

Janet Echelman is installing her new sculpture as we speak. Not in a gallery or on a pedestal, but instead soaring over the middle of downtown Vancouver. The installation involves cranes, hard hats and anchor points engineered atop two buildings: a 24-story hotel and the Vancouver Convention Centre where TED2014 will be held.

“After three years of work, it’s hard to believe it’s finally becoming real,” says Echelman. “It’s the first test of my sculpture woven into the city at this scale.”

Janet Echelman: Taking imagination seriously Janet Echelman: Taking imagination seriously Echelman’s sculpture, titled Skies Painted with Unnumbered Sparks, is presented with an original interactive work created in collaboration with Aaron Koblin, who Echelman met when they both spoke at TED2011. The sculpture is an extension of the idea Echelman presented in her talk, “Taking imagination seriously.” In the talk, Echelman shares how she fell in love with a new material — fishing net — and began creating voluptuous forms that contrast with the hard edges generally found in cities. She revealed the challenge of making these sculptures both durable and permanent, but also able to react to the wind. She shared her dream of taking these sculptures to the next level by finding materials light enough to attach to existing buildings in a neighborhood rather than requiring a new supporting steel structure.

This sculpture does just that. When completed, it will span 745 feet, while her largest previous sculpture was less than half that.

“That’s half of the main span of the Brooklyn Bridge,” says Echelman. “It’s a huge jump, and it turns out that even for soft net sculpture when you increase the size, the wind forces grow exponentially. My engineer said to me, ‘You’ve doubled the length of your sculpture, but your wind forces are 10 times larger.’” In fact, the work is engineered right up to the available lateral loading force of the buildings involved, a limit the artist says she never expected to encounter with her work.

Echelman was able to think on this scale by finding an incredibly light material — Spectra, a fiber that is 15 times stronger by weight than steel. But the engineering still presented an incredible challenge, for which no good software design tools existed.

Echelman turned to Autodesk, a longtime TED partner and leader in 3D design and engineering software that seeks out interesting design problems. Autodesk worked with Echelman to create custom 3D software to model the piece and test its feasibility. “The challenge of modeling the stress and drape of my work under gravity and wind while being aware of the fabrication constraints of my craft was interesting to them, and they stepped in to collaborate,” says Echelman. Autodesk provided the missing link to make Echelman’s artistic dream a reality. They also sponsored the sculpture.

Echelman designed the sculpture specifically for its location, right outside TED2014 on the Vancouver waterfront. “It’s like custom-knitted sweater for the city,” she says. “We went building to building and asked them to be part of this, and to let me tap into their building structure to support art in the airspace between them …It is very much about taking space that is sort of invisible and turns it into a social space.” The Burrard Arts Foundation — a Vancouver-based non-profit — has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the installation of the work.

Even from blocks away, people in Vancouver will be able to see this gorgeous, flexing mesh as it mirrors the movement of the wind. “It’s a soft, delicate, yet monumental form,” Echelman explains. “In the day, it’s very subtle, blending in with clouds and sky. At night, it comes alive with illumination and some surprises.”

As the sun goes down, the sculpture becomes an enormous canvas which both the Vancouver public and TED attendees help color. Echelman worked with Koblin, a Creative Director at Google Creative Lab who gave the TED Talk “Artfully visualizing our humanity,” to create a colorful and interactive lighting experience using 160,000 lumens of light. As people view the sculpture overhead, they’ll be able to choreograph the lighting with their mobile device.

“We all carry devices in our pockets that have an enormous power to connect with other people around the world,” says Koblin. “But rarely do we get a chance to use it to connect and create with people standing next to us.”

Echelman has noticed a unique energy created by her sculptures, and she hopes that this will greatly amplify that. “I’ve discovered that there is a certain kind of social space created underneath my sculptures that is contemplative and calm. People begin to talk to strangers about what they’re seeing,” says Echelman. “It’s really exciting for me as an artist to see the work grow and unfold in ways beyond what I could imagine. That’s what the collaboration [with Aaron] brings, because we each bring a completely different set of skills to the table.”

As for how people will interact with the sculpture, Echelman doesn’t want to guess. “I look forward to finding out what people feel and think, and how it affects them,” she says.

The installation is in progress now, and the artwork will be displayed in Vancouver from March 15-23. From there, it is designed to travel from city to city. Below, some initial sketches of the sculpture-in-the-making.

Oliver Sacks (watch his TED Talk) is coming to a small screen near you. Deadline reports that NBC is developing a TV drama called Sparks, based on the fascinating case studies of the neurological anthropologist.

GPS spoofer Todd Humphreys (watch his talk) is at it again! The MIT Technology Review reports that he and his students just knocked a multi-million-dollar yacht off course.

Jeff Smith (watch his TED Talk) discusses the experience of being well-off, white and in prison with Piper Kerman of Orange is the New Black fame. One great moment from this MSNBC segment: “What do you want to tell people who are living in the America where they don’t think the criminal justice system has anything to do with them?” the interviewer asks. Smith replies, “The people who are locked up really aren’t that different from you and I. We probably had a lot more privileges than a lot of them growing up — maybe an intact family, the opportunity for a great education, or financial security, but at the end of the day, they miss their kids just like we do, they miss their girlfriend or their wife or their mom or their friends just like we do, and they want a chance at a better life when they get out.”

The online magazine Bookslut asked poet Stephen Burt (read about his TEDGlobal 2013 talk) to list some of the delightful things he’s recently consumed. When Janet Echelman’s paints went missing, she didn’t let it stop her from making art for her upcoming show deadline. In this classic talk from TED2011, “Taking imagination seriously,” Echelman tells the story of her determination to use the materials surrounding her as inspiration. Despite numerous rejections from art school, she found that her constant creativity has helped her become an unorthodox public artist unbound by tradition.

Janet Echelman: Imagination Becomes Reality

One of the most gratifying results of my TED Talk has been to see volunteers translate it into 33 languages — from Armenian and Arabic to Turkish and Vietnamese — and receive comments from people around the world about how my story is affecting their lives.

I heard from Pedro Perea in Madrid, a volunteer at a juvenile prison who brings translated TED Talks to teenage inmates:

“They usually give up when confronting difficulties. But when your talk ended, they applauded, which means more than they just liked it: you can see a new energy in their faces, the energy of ‘I can also do difficult things’. Their usual excuses for not trying to change themselves started to disappear … they saw that persevering brings results.”

I was stunned. I could never have imagined my story traveling across oceans and languages to reach this audience, translating to different circumstances, my story of being rejected by art schools yet going on to become an artist on my own.

Thomas Fisher: The Rigor of Creativity

We have so mystified, romanticized, and idealized creativity, so convinced ourselves that it remains primarily the purview of artists or “geniuses,” that far too many people believe that they are not creative. In fact, they have not been allowed, or allowed themselves, to use the creativity that they and just about everyone else is born with. All human beings have a capacity for creativity because of how our brain works.

When we learn about some object, for instance, we store that knowledge in different parts of our brain. Its name goes one place, its shape and color in another, its weight and feel in yet another, and contextual information about it — its purpose, where it came from, how it is made — in yet another still. When we next encounter that object, our brain almost instantaneously recombines that information, enabling us to identify it, to use it, and to think or talk about it.

Our educational system largely tests this recombinant ability. Pupils get graded upon how well they retrieve the information that they have learned and they get marked down if they get some aspect it wrong: misspelling the word, misidentifying something, or misunderstanding some other aspect of it. Education has so focused on the correctness of our knowledge and the accuracy of our memory that it has almost completely repressed the complementary skill of creativity.
