Over the past three decades, we have seen an unprecedented rise in technology within our educational curriculum. This increase in technology has transformed students’ experiences in schools. Although analyzing the overall position of technology is subjective, no one can deny the impact it has had. Many positives have come from this, so have downsides.

Technology has altered the culture within schools in many positive ways. Teachers teach using presentations, students submit assignments through computers, and school information is passed through a website. With technology, schools have become efficient. Author Lulia Popescu writes, “Thanks to cloud services, virtual classrooms, mobile apps, and social media, sharing and accessing school content has become easier”. This quote proves the many positives of technology. Technology allows students today to access information from pleather of sources, which makes students more independent as they don’t need to rely as much on their educators. Additionally, resources such as AI, grammar assistance, and other apps have provided helpful tools to students.  With technology, virtual classrooms are implemented, allowing students to gain education without having be in the classroom physically. These classes have made gaining an education very convenient for millions of people. In fact, author Devlin Peck writes, “The number of online learning users is expected to increase to 57 million by 2027”. These people who use online learning sometimes don’t have the schedule to take in-person classes, thus making education available to a larger audience. These changes have seen a spike in students’ grades.

On the other hand, all these technological advancement has caused students to become too dependent on technology. Skills such as handwriting, proofreading, and attention span have tanked dramatically. Firstly, not all students have an equal chance at success with technology. Although most school districts provide technological tools for all students, internet connectivity varies between students. This gives an unfair advantage to certain students and districts, creating more academic inequality. Furthermore, with the rising popularity of AI, artificial intelligence, academic integrity is being compromised. This has caused students to cheat on assignments much more easily. Nothing has caused educators more hardship than tackling the use of AI in students’ assignments. Not only are students too dependent on AI, which is an issue on its own, but AI isn’t accurate, causing students to be misled. The most shocking realization is that even with the resources available online, technology has led to worse performance in schools. Due to the constant usage of phones within classrooms, students are focused on their academics, leading to worse performance.

Overall, the use of technology has brought many positives and negatives. Highlighted by the ease of use and Artificial Intelligence, students are having mixed emotions about technology. While certain students may benefit from technology, others have been negatively affected. However, no one can deny the impact it has had on education.

For any hockey player, if you ask them, “What helps you be a good hockey player?” they may answer with something like “you have to have good wrist action, or good speed.” But for Trevor Frischmon, the answer was his hard-nosed mentality. 

Trevor Frischmon first found himself on the ice when he was just three years old. “I got started mostly because of my two older brothers,” he recounts. “And the longer I played the sport, the more I grew to love it.” 

As the years went on, Frischmon began playing hockey for his local high school, Blaine, and eventually became a two-year captain. Moreso, he was an instrumental part of Blaine’s 2000 state championship team and was named to the All-Tournament Team. “I just always wanted to be the hardest worker on the ice,” Frischmon said. 

Frischmon’s never-quit mentality earned him a spot on Colorado College’s Division 1 team, a goal he had always dreamed of achieving.  However, Frischmon doesn’t just credit his hockey abilities; he also credits his relentless drive. “That was just something that really helped me to go farther in hockey than what I should have or what people thought I would have.” 

His dream didn’t just stop there, though. Once he was playing Division 1 college hockey, reality started to sink in, and he realized that professional hockey was something he could pursue.  “You’d start hearing about people playing in pro hockey, and you’d have teammates that’d go, and you’d want to do that too,” said Frischmon. Frischmon says that if you had told his younger self that he would be going on to play professional hockey, he wouldn’t have believed it. But his determination held fast, and he soon found himself playing in the National Hockey League and even in Europe. 

With over 500 professional games played, Frischmon didn’t think he’d stop. And then in Europe, at the height of his career, he was injured with a concussion that he could never recover from. “[It was] really hard to get over for nine months,” Frischmon said, speaking about his career-ending injury. “I got a chance to play again after[…]but it just wasn’t right anymore.” The injury may have ended his time playing on the ice, but for Frischmon, his love of the game always took over. It was this that moved him to become a coach. 

“It’s definitely not something easy that came to me,” he said, speaking about his first year as a coach. “Coming [into coaching], it was Xs and Os.” The transition from a player to a coach proved challenging, but once again, Frischmon’s love for the game took over, and he recounts, “[Having] multiple coaches that were amazing and really helped me learn and what it really takes to be a good human and not just an athlete.” That was what Frischmon wanted to be for his players – the coach they all looked up to. He realized that to effectively coach a team, he had to relate to other players and be open-minded. “I wasn’t ready to coach my first year. It takes some time to learn how to teach.”  This struggle forced him to apply another ethic, adding on to his ground-breaking discipline: people management. He realized that being a coach wasn’t just about the game itself. It was about being what a good human being was. 

For all of the players and the students he talks to, whether they play hockey or not, he tells them to “make the most of their time.” Whether it’s on the rink or in the classroom, you can push yourself to go even further than what you thought you could do. “Enjoy it,” Frischmon concludes, “But never be too comfortable. Always push yourself to do something more.”

On February 15, 2025, Blaine High School will be hosting their annual Multicultural show. Giftee Doll and Yvonne Mars, both seniors,” are a part of the multicultural club which is a group that thrives in working together to make this year’s multicultural show a success. The show gives students an opportunity to represent their cultures as well as their talents through various performances.

Since the multicultural show was canceled during covid years and not brought back until the 2023- 2024 school year it caused a lot of confusion among the Blaine BIPOC community as they felt they were not well represented.

The performers for this year’s multicultural show are excited to see how it comes together, and they have high expectations. As for right now, an East African group will be performing a cultural dance, ADC will be performing” and West African dance as well. Asian club students may be performing as well. Last year multiple students participated in the multicultural fashion show. The fashion show represented students and in their cultures traditional clothing. This show will take place during 1st hr (7:40 – 8:40), 2nd hour (8:47-10:02)” and 5th hour (10:08 – 11:16). 5th hour 1:07 Performers have to attend a Mandatory dress rehearsal February 10-12 if participating in a Fashion show. The show will happen On February 13 in the auditorium people allowed on stage. Mariam Fofana (11th grade) “I would want to expand that so everybody can dance, show off their culture and have fun” Yvonne Marsh would recommend the school makes the show bigger“ I feel like there

could be more decorations and sound effects “. Omar Hilowle “(12th grade”)“I wanna allow more people to perform and do it but they have a certain limit .” Everybody plays their part to make the show a success at the end of the day.

On the other hand, most students enjoy the show and are just happy it is back. Grace Ocean “Likes it as if it’s a pretty good show ”.  Last year’s theme was A kaleidoscope of cultures. This year’s theme is behind every face is a story. West African dance group ADC  incorporated the theme into their dance this year making it more thrilling to be able to perform the dance as a whole. Because at the end of the day, harmony is diversity.

This year’s team included players with different levels of experience. Scarlet Crews, a middle hitter on the 9A team, has been playing volleyball for four years. She shared, “I was worried at first, but my fears were gone once I got into the rhythm with the team.” Scarlet, who rated her experience an “eight out of ten,” appreciated the support from her teammates, which helped her adjust to high school volleyball.

Zaydie Tranberg, a libero on the 9B team, said high school volleyball feels more intense than anything she has played before. “High school volleyball is a lot faster and more intense than middle school. You have more games, more playing time, and you actually learn new skills rather than just repeating the same things over and over,” Zaydie explained. Her summer and spring training provided a solid foundation, helping her succeed on the high school team.

Sydney Schlichting, a middle hitter on the 9A team, has been playing volleyball for several years. “I’ve been doing club for a few years now, but this season felt different,” she said. “It was fun, and I really liked it because in high school we have more games and more time to develop our skills.”

Both teams had many memorable moments. Scarlet recalled, “The teammates were great. Everyone was committed to working together. Even when things got tough, we had each other’s backs.” Zaydie added, “We won most of our games, which was great. It made all the hard work worth it.” These wins and the effort that went into them helped strengthen the bond between teammates.

There were also special events that brought everyone together. Sydney remembered the “Blackout Cancer Day” event, where the team wore shirts to support cancer awareness. “It was really fun, and it meant a lot to us,” she said. Both teams also enjoyed Teacher Appreciation Day, which gave players the chance to invite teachers to their games, showing support and gratitude.

One thing that stood out for all players was the support from their coaches. Both teams had different coaches, but they felt encouraged to do their best across the board and were motivated to keep improving.

Looking forward to next year, many players are excited to return. “I’m definitely trying out again,” Scarlet said. Zaydie and Sydney echoed that enthusiasm, eager to keep improving their skills and be part of another great season.

For any incoming freshmen or anyone considering volleyball, the message is clear “Just go for it,” said Zaydie. “The team and the coach will help you improve and have fun.” Blaine High School girls volleyball offers a fantastic opportunity to be part of a supportive and fun team.

Student-athletes have a lot on their plates during the on-season, here is a new look at what it’s like to be a student-athlete at Blaine High School. 

There are many roles high schoolers can play: employee, student, athlete, volunteer, etc. Combining student and athlete can be a heavy load to bear. Practices, conditioning, weights, games, sleep, nutrition, classes, homework, and required volunteer hours all have to fit into a short 24 hours. This can vary from sport to sport. Here’s how some BHS student-athletes manage to do it all.

David Diamond, a 12th-grade, point guard for the Blaine Boys Varsity Basketball Team says that he manages to make it work in his day by just finding the time. On the other hand, Lilliana Peterson, a 9th grade, back base for the Blaine Competition Cheer Team and the Blaine Winter Sideline Cheer Team tries to check as many of these boxes at once as possible. By combining her time with friends at cheer, and completing assignments with friends, she does it all in less time. 

Elyse Evans, a 10th-grade point guard for the Girls’ B-squad Basketball Team, has found that good communication and a solid schedule are keys to her success as a student-athlete. She only allows herself to work on the weekends, prioritizes family and her relationships, and sets time aside every day for homework. Colten Piedade, a 9th grade, right-wing and right defenseman for the Blaine Boys Youth Hockey Team on the other hand tries not to procrastinate. He tries to separate his work into groups of prioritization and how long the task will take him to complete. 

Even though these four athletes compete in a range of activities and are in different grade levels, they all are committed to both academics and their sports. This is what makes a great student-athlete: commitment to both. To compete as a high school athlete, you have to remain eligible. That means passing all of your classes, staying on top of your work, and maintaining progress toward graduation. But you also have to keep improving your skill level in your sport to stay on the team. This is a balancing act that takes practice and discipline.

When asked what it is like being a part of a Blaine High School sports team, Diamond said, “It’s a very fun experience. I love the guys, I love our coaches, and even though it’s a lot of time, I think that the fact that everybody likes each other and wants to be there, it’s worth it.” Peterson shared, “It’s like a party every day.” Evans stated, “It has its perks, it’s a very kind group of people… it’s very lively, lots of commotion.” Piedade concluded, “You just end up building relationships…, and you get to have fun while doing it.”

Blaine High School applauds you for your hard work, dedication, and commitment. We are so proud of all of our student-athletes and all that they have accomplished.

Blaine High School boys’ soccer team ended the 2024 season with a 10-6-3 record ‒ grabbing the #1 spot in their section for the first time in eight years. This big moment came from strong teamwork and standout performances at Blaine High School, setting high hopes for the future.

Sophomore forward Samuel Sporneac led the team with 14 goals, making him the top scorer of the season. “It felt great,” Sporneac shared. “I’m aiming to get more goals and more assists next season.

His teammate Jonathan Yani, also a forward and a junior, was close with 10 goals and will come back next year as one of the team captains. “It feels great to be captain,” Yani said. “I know not many people get to have that role and I will take this duty with pride.”       

Senior defender Ali Aljumaili who played an important leadership role this season, thought about his proudest moments. “Watching all my teammates come together during team bonding,  I loved every second,” he said. For Aljumaili the hardest challenge happened in the section final against Andover, a high energy match that ended the Bengals’ season. “It was very hard and it was sad that we lost,” he added.

The team also got important help from sophomore forwards Damir Secic and Yousef Sherian and junior defenders Samir Secic and Landon Peterson who will all return next season. With 13 players coming back and a leadership group that includes captains Samir Secic, Jonathan Yani and Landon Peterson the Bengals are already making plans for next year. “We’re aiming to win sections and go to state,” said Sporneac. The players feel confident that with hard work and determination, the Bengals will probably reach even greater success in the coming year.

With an unfortunate double penalty shootout loss to Andover after double overtime the Bengals are looking forward to an even more successful season. For Blaine High School Boys soccer program, the 2024 season was more than just numbers on a scoreboard. It was about building a talented young group that was made successful because of teamwork, resilience, and ambition that will carry into the future.

If you look around in almost any higher level math classroom in the US, you’ll find yourself surrounded with calculators made by Texas Instruments. The ubiquitous TI-84 Plus series of graphing calculators is the most popular among students going into high school math classes, alongside a smaller share of the company’s other offerings.

With a head-start in educational calculators TI has monopolized the market almost entirely in its favor, pushing manufacturers such as Casio into the back-ranks in the classroom. Now, though, the monopoly is under fire as online tools are starting to be considered as more capable, accessible, and versatile alternatives to the venerable denizen of backpacks dating back to the 1990s.

TI Has Monopoly On Calculators?

In the United States, the company’s offerings outsell their competitors by a wide margin. The Wall Street Journal estimated that approximately 80% of graphing calculators sold in the US were made by TI, leaving only 20% for the four competing companies (Wall Street Journal, 2014).

Additionally, TI sells half of the models of College Board-approved graphing calculators available today. Counting the TI-Nspire CX-II CAS and standard editions separately, they offer six separate models that can still be bought new today (including the TI-83 plus!). Researching manufacturer catalogs, I turned up with that same number of calculators that can still be bought new from all other manufacturers combined: Casio, HP, NumWorks, and Sharp.

Despite the presence of other offerings, you will find that almost nobody else uses them. I know only one person who has a calculator that isn’t made by TI. Almost all the calculators on loan from math classrooms are either a TI-84 Plus or a TI-84 Plus CE. If you’ve found a calculator at just about any school in the USA, chances are that it’s made by TI.

The company effectively controls the market, and their prices reflect that. They don’t have the single most expensive offering (though that does depend on the retailer you buy from), but the value for the dollar offered by TI is among the lowest offered by any manufacturer.

How it Affects Students, Teachers, and Schools

As mentioned, possibly the most noticeable artifact of TI’s Rule over the calculator is their prices. The TI-83 Plus was released in 1999, and still costs $75 or more. Some retailers will sell it for as much as $120 (Office Depot, n.d.), the same price it had during its launch before Y2K turned the corner (Datamath, 2020).

The high price tag is not the only effect, though. In fact, it is responsible for a number of other effects that much more significantly impact anybody involved in what goes on inside the math classroom.

Particularly for struggling students, the amount of money that even a relatively basic TI-84 Plus costs can hinder them in the classroom (MIC, 2015). The lower cost of used calculators helps with this issue, but still doesn’t solve it completely. Particularly with the relative ease of access to new calculators, many still choose to spend the $100 at almost any big box store over trying to hunt down a used option.

Schools and Students are drained of money that could be put into other areas of education or life due to the high prices, and it’s even more expensive for those who choose TI’s more advanced offerings such as the TI-84 Plus CE or the TI-Nspire CX II. Those aren’t available for under $115 at any of the retailers investigated.

In the case of schools, outfitting a 30-kid classroom with the fairly standard “school property” labeled TI-84 would cost about $2500 (Math4Sale, n.d.). For high schools with a large number of math classrooms, that number can exceed $10,000. Even though it is often a one-time expense, that money would be better spent on other improvements to the quality of life of both students and teachers alike instead of on outdated, overpriced hardware.

Aside from that problem, there’s also the fact that the TI-84 plus just isn’t a very good calculator. The low-resolution screen makes rendering higher levels of detail almost impossible for the device, and skipping to specific points on a graph can be particularly irritating.

The similarly priced Casio FX-CG50 has a screen which is significantly more readable than that of the TI-84, can display color, and is even backlit. As a bonus it has a feature called “natural textbook display” (called “mathprint” by TI and yet more names by others) which, as one might guess, allows equations to be typed into the calculator so that they look the same as equations printed in a textbook.

Casio sells a cheaper model, the FX-9750GIII, which is priced at $55 (Amazon, n.d.). That’s cheaper than many used TI-84s, and the calculator has a number of features that the TI lacks. It has the same “natural textbook display” feature that the FX-CG50 does, and they also both share the ability to be programmed in python. TI doesn’t offer that feature until you get to their TI-84 Plus CE Python Edition (TI, n.d.), which often costs twice as much as what Casio sells their budget python-capable offering for.

Texas Instruments’ calculators are also slower than most of the competition. Built on the Zilog Z80, a CPU that came out competing with the Intel 8080 over 30 years ago, TI’s offerings are struggling to keep up with the more modern processors in other calculators. The TI-Nspire rectifies this, but comes into price competition with the HP Prime. There, HP offers a touch screen and a CPU fast enough to seamlessly scroll the graphs of simpler functions.

This all begs the question though: if TI’s calculators aren’t very good, then why do they even have a monopoly in the first place?

How Texas Instruments Built its Calculator Empire

A monopoly of this magnitude doesn’t build itself in a day… at least, not usually. TI expended a lot of effort in cornering the educational graphing calculator market before just about anybody else had even thought of entering the field.

In 1990, Texas Instruments introduced the TI-81 to the world. It wasn’t the first graphing calculator, that honor is generally given to Casio with their FX-7000G coming out in 1985(Wikipedia, n.d.). What TI did make was, arguably, the first graphing calculator targeted at schools.

Simply being first isn’t all of what got TI to the top, however. A somewhat under-the-radar nonprofit by the name of “Teachers Teaching with Technology”, created in the late 1980s by TI, has done considerable work to push the company’s calculators to the forefront.

The nonprofit states openly on their website that they provide various forms of coaching centered on “the integration of effective pedagogy and TI technology” (T3, n.d.). Notice, specifically, the presence of TI in that sentence. T3, as it is sometimes called, gives TI a sizable one-up in the world of educational calculators by making sure that pretty much every teacher knows how to use their products.

The ubiquity of the TI-83/84 has gained it another point of leverage in the educational world, textbooks. A number of textbooks have instructions on how to perform operations on TI calculators, but few have the same instructions for calculators of another brand. I have not encountered any textbooks with non-TI calculator instructions.

The benefits of a unified platform are substantial, which is one of the primary reasons TI calculators corner the market. With teachers knowing how to teach them and textbooks having instructions on how to use them, it may be clear to see why the calculators remain so expensive. However, the costs that come with the monopoly generally significantly outweigh the benefits. TI calculators may be a standard in education, but they aren’t a very good one.

The Empire’s Shaky Foundations Leading into the Future

Despite the prevalence of the TI-84, all is not well at the throne of the Texas Instruments calculator empire. Online tools vastly more capable than a typical handheld system are chipping away at the empire’s foundation (QZ, 2017). Possibly the most notable of these tools is Desmos, but more capable analytical systems are also gaining more footing as time marches on.

A number of classrooms have at least begun to integrate these tools into their teaching portfolio. You may have encountered Desmos specifically before, particularly in an algebra or statistics class. Having access to a capable graphing system designed for computers opens up new ways for teachers to demonstrate phenomena to students, and gives students a responsive interface to explore in.

More common in higher education and business is a tool known as Wolfram Alpha, which can take in natural language inputs and give an explanation of the question asked, or produce information at a request. It is not commonly used in high schools right now, but makes a useful learning tool that could help more traditional systems like Desmos topple Texas Instruments’ monopoly. Wolfram Alpha can even evaluate more advanced things such as indefinite integrals, providing another way to explain calculus to students.

Standardized testing bodies, notably steadfast in maintaining the use of graphing calculators, are one of the most stable grounds for TI to stand on. Now, even they are beginning to consider switching away from the old graphing calculators and towards more technologically forward options.

Some tests have already moved digital, such as the SAT. The digital SAT integrates a calculator into the testing application itself (College Board, n.d.), which removes the need for students to bring their own calculator for the test . In fact, the new digital SAT has integrated Desmos itself into the learning tool portfolio. This could lead into a Desmos-led environment, but even so, that would be much better than the current situation.

It may take some time before a majority of tests go digital, but the computerized SAT is already laying the foundations for the force that could bring down Texas Instruments’ long-standing empire in the math classroom. It remains to be seen if, or how, TI will respond to this new threat to the calculator monopoly.

What This All Means

TI has a calculator monopoly, great. What significance does it have? For many, it has little meaning or is at most a minor inconvenience. For some, it is something that they think about enough to write an article about. For yet others, it means that they can not do as well in school as they could if they were able to afford a fancy calculator.

Now, though, there are services which are slowly chipping away at the walls of TI’s castle. As standardized tests begin to switch to digital modes, the graphing calculator market as a whole is seeing its foundations pulled out from under it. It may be soon that we witness the fall of TI’s great calculator empire.

The December of 1970, watching as the snow covers the ground, the air filled with the frost of winter, and the buzzing sound of students getting ready for Christmas break. All students and staff at Barton University boarding school get ready for their long awaited break where they get time to spend with friends, family, and their loved ones for a very merry Christmas. Except for 3 people. Professor Paul Hunman, hated by both students and staff, and content with having nowhere or no one to go to for Christmas. Angus Tully, top of his class, but forced to stay at Barton as his mother abruptly schedules a honeymoon with his new step-dad. And Mary Lamb, the cafeteria lady grieving the loss of her son Curtis, trying to stay at the one place where she shared memories with him for the last time. Stuck together for 2 weeks, all 3 grow begin to grow closer and gain an understanding of their differences and similarities.

“The Holdovers” directed by Alexander Payne and written by David Hemingson was released into theaters on October 27th, 2023. I first learned of this film when I got bored and searched for “movie trailers 2023” on YouTube as one normally does. The moment I watched the trailer in full, I knew that I needed to watch this film. To me the film just seemed to click with my mind and made my brain tell me that I will absolutely love this film. I loved the cinematography of the film, having this old timey 1970-80’s classic film aesthetic that made my brain chemicals feel pleased. The plot explained in the trailer felt strong and intriguing, and had my expectations for the film heightened and heightened. So of course naturally I held off from watching the movie until a couple days ago on Monday of December 10th. But when I finished the movie, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that not only had it met my expectations, but had exceeded them.

My favorite part of the film by far was the stylistic choice to shoot the film as if it were a true classic 70’s/80’s movie. The camera quality isn’t perfect and it allows itself to look old and outdated at times. But through this choice, the movie is able to have this very nostalgic feeling that brings you back to a different time. The cinematography and scene composition makes the film feel like an old painting put into motion, a memory replaying onto the screen. Every shot feels like it was composed with the intent to be as artistic and visually stylistic as possible. Almost every shot is long enough to give a more natural feeling to them, letting the actions and dialogue of the characters convey more than the camera. One of my favorite shots in the whole film is of the professor Paul Hunman, where while in a movie theater decides to smoke his pipe, the light revealing his face while enveloped in the darkness around him.

But ultimately what made me absolutely love this film, was how the story masterfully puts these 3 seemingly different and incompatible characters together, and bring them all closer to one another through a single common trait. Loneliness. All 3 of these characters although each unique in their own circumstances, share the same feeling of loneliness and sadness with their lives. Mary Lamb, the cafeteria woman, who for the first time ever must celebrate without her son. Doing everything that she can to ensure that he could live the best life that he possibly have, only to lose him before he could truly live his life. Now deciding to spend her Christmas in the last place where felt connected with her son. Angus Tully, the last student left behind during Christmas break, stuck all alone while his mother spends her time honeymooning with her new husband. Breaking her promise with her son to spend time with each other in favor of creating a new life and family for her own benefit, while her old family lays hidden and broken. And Paul Hunman, the most hated professor in the whole school, stuck spending his break watching over the same delinquents he so despises. Wrongfully accused of plagiarism for his work at Harvard and now stuck spending his life fully committed as a professor for a group of students that have enough money to not care.

But through this shared sense of loneliness, do these 3 characters form a deep and personal bond throughout the film. With no one else to talk to, they’re all forced to interact with one another whether it be intentional or not. And through these interactions each character is given the chance to learn more and more about each other that they would never learn in any other circumstance.

Paul and Angus learn more about who Mary’s son truly was and how much he meant to her life. Allowing herself to be seen vulnerable and emotional while she grieves the loss of her child. We learn more about Paul and how he was framed for plagiarism while at Harvard, leading him to naturally respond by hitting the accuser with a car. Losing all of his dreams and ambitions because someone with more money decided to steal from him. Showing off that he did not choose his job as a professor for Barton of his own free will, but was his only choice after facing such downfall. But it also shows that even though Paul has fallen to where he is, he still upholds his own morals to give the best learning and information he can. It shows us that he still has a love for what he teaches and is not willing to allow others to pass through school solely through their family connections.

And most importantly, we learn more about Angus and his family. Paul initially thinks that Angus is just another spoiled rich kid, always defying his orders and causing as much trouble as he can on purpose. But as they talked more and more frequently, they both started to open up to each other on a personal level. But the moment that truly changed their relationship, was when Angus attempted to run away and see his father. Throughout the film it was assumed that Angus’s father was dead, with his mother quickly moving on to someone else to help cope. But when they do go to visit Angus’s father, we learn that he isn’t actually dead, but instead stuck in a mental hospital. His mother didn’t leave as a response to grief, she left because she didn’t want to handle his father for any longer.

Through these shared experiences of grief and loneliness, do the bonds between each of these 3 characters strengthen and allow and sort of found family relationship that just warms my heart up. “The Holdovers” is one of the most genuine and sincere films that I’ve seen to date. It’s not an overdramatic piece of art, nor is it a sad or moody drama. It’s a film that knows what it wanted to be, and executed it phenomenally. It’s been a long time since a Christmas movie actually brought back a sense of holiday nostalgia, and that could transport me back into a time that I never even lived through. It’s a film that shows its characters not as heroes or idols, but just as genuine people just as normal as me and you, building binds with each other in a time of weakness and vulnerability. It’s one of my favorite films of the year, and definitely an underrated masterpiece of directing to come out this year. Hoping that Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy win their awards at the Oscars.

In the magical world of Barbieland, a Barbie can be anything and everything. A doctor, a scientist, a chef, a dancer, and a President. In Barbieland the world is made for Barbie, ruled by Barbie, for all the Barbies. Oh, and Ken is there as well, same with Allan. However, one Barbie begins to feel…different. She begins to have these strange thoughts of death, feelings of anxiety, and her feet become flat. In order to fix herself and bring back her status quo, Barbie needs to go to the real world and find the child that gave her these emotions in the first place. Oh, and Ken comes along as well.

A movie based on the world famous children’s doll Barbie produced by Mattel was said to be in production for a long time. The project was first announced in September of 2009 under the production of Universal Studios, but would be adopted by Sony Pictures in April of 2014. However it wouldn’t be until October of 2018 for production and filming to fully begin when the project was adopted by Warner Bros. “Barbie” directed by director Greta Gerwig was released in theaters through the US on July 21st, 2023, sharing the same theatrical release with Christopher Nolan’s hit film Oppenheimer, creating the cultural event that would be known as “Barbenheimer”. The film would become a theatrical hit grossing over $1.44 billion dollars, becoming the highest grossing film of 2023, and 14th highest grossing film of all time. 

“Barbie”, unlike the real product it is referenced from, talks about many mature themes on gender roles, patriarchy, and how women are treated in our current society. In Barbieland, everything is run by women. The Supreme Court is all women, the President is a woman, all doctors are women, all CEOs are women. In Barbieland, a woman can be both anything and everything they want to be. However, when Barbie goes to the real world, she sees the complete opposite of how society is ruled in Barbieland. She’s catcalled and sexualized by almost every man that she meets, being seen as nothing but an object of pleasure to them. She sees almost every position of power being controlled by a man, even the company Mattel that created her. Upon reaching the real world, instead of being greeted with cheers and hugs, all she can see is hate and dehumanization. All she can think is that she has failed as a Barbie. 

However, there is someone that begins to feel the exact opposite once reaching the real world. A man by the name of Ken. In Barbieland, while all Barbie’s are seen as strong and powerful, all Ken’s are at the will of the Barbies. While Barbie’s can be anything they want, Ken is only there to be a partner for Barbie. Ken can only find joy when he is noticed by the eyes of Barbie. But when Ken makes it to the real world, he sees the opposite of everything he’s been through. In the real world, men control everything. A man can be a doctor, a scientist, a chef, a dancer, and a President. A man is meant to be strong and powerful, surrounding himself with “manly” things and acting like only he can control his destiny. It is a man’s job to enforce his superiority to all others. So learning all of this, Ken goes all the way back to Barbieland to spread ideas of patriarchy and male dominance, turning Barbieland into the grand Kendom. 

Both the perspectives of Barbie in the real world and Ken in the real world show off how women are treated in a patriarchal society. In Barbieland the roles of society are reversed, with all women being over men. In Barbieland women are in control, while all the men are only there to serve under the women. Barbieland is a reflection of our own society but instead of patriarchy, they stand underneath matriarchy. Barbie living as a woman of course doesn’t see anything wrong with how the system works, but the moment she goes out into the real world and sees how it’s like to be seen as “inferior” in society, she starts to have a mental breakdown. But what she also sees is the hardships that women face in our own society, and through learning that not everything can be perfect, she gathers the will to fight back and live. 

Ken however, brings out the opposite perspective. All throughout his life he has been belittled and seen as inferior all because he was a man. Ken couldn’t become anything more simply because he was born a Ken, and all Kens must follow the structure that society has upheld. The Ken’s reflect women in our society. So when Ken makes it to the real world, instead of feeling embarrassed or feeling harassed, Ken instead loves every second of it. Because for the first time in his life he feels like he’s being seen, like he’s actually seen as an individual instead of a backdrop for Barbie. He see’s how men are represented in society and how much power and freedom they seemingly have. So of course Ken would want to live in a patriarchal society, because he wants to be in a position of power for once instead of only living to serve. 

“Barbie” at its core shows off how both patriarchy and toxic masculinity effects and harms everyone within a society. A male dominated society undermines and attacks the lives and opinions of women, who are forced to work twice as hard as men with less than half of the benefits or rewards. Simply for the fact that they were born a woman, and so society expects you to act and work as a woman. And paired with the rising surge of toxic masculinity, woman begin to become seen as less of as human beings, and more so as an object of desire and labor. On the other side, patriarchy and toxic masculinity also harm how men view themselves and how they control their public image. Toxic masculinity tells men who they have to be, and how they should act, simply because they are a man. You have to be strong, you have to be powerful, you have to be emotionless, you cannot show fear, you cannot show sadness, you have to carry everybody’s burden. Ironic when many men believe that they have to carry harder burdens than women, while shunning men that allow themselves to cry. “Barbie” tells the audience that we can’t allow our society to be dominated by one group of people, because allowing a majority to control, allows the minority to be oppressed. You need to create a society that allows for equality and allows the voices of different groups to be heard and understood.

“Barbie” was one of the funniest films I’ve seen all year, combining the wackiness of the idea with the more serious and mature underlying themes of womanhood. When people heard of a film about the doll Barbie, they most likely were not expecting the tone and meaning of the actual movie. The film is fun and entertaining, allowing the actors such as Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie to shine and have fun, while also allowing them to have their moments to be emotional.  A great surprise to come out this year, and will most likely become a film that will be rewatched throughout the years.

What is gender? What is sex? Starting sex doesn’t always equal a person(s) gender. Gender is a social construct created on roles, behavior, expression, and identities of girls, women, boys, men, and gender-diverse people. Sex is biological. You can determine a person(‘s) sex by the gene expression chromosomes hormones levels and function, and reproductive/sexual anatomy. 

The reason sex and gender are always mixed up is because of the argument that there are only 2 genders. People tend to confuse gender for sex. There is a difference between the two.

What is gender? 

As mentioned earlier, gender is a social construct. They are related to, but different from gender identity. Gender is a part of your identity and also how you express yourself.

Gender identity is a person‘s internal and individual experience of gender. It is a person’s sense of being a woman or a man, both, or neither. Anywhere along the gender spectrum. A person’s gender identity may or may not be the same as their birth-assigned sex. Gender expression is how a person expresses or presents their gender, such as through makeup, clothing style, body language,  voice, hair, etc. A person chooses a name or pronoun.

What is sex? 

Sex is the physical difference or biological differences between people who are male, female, or intersex. Which is usually assigned at birth. This is where terms like Afab (assigned female at birth) or Amab (assigned male at birth) are commonly used in the trans community. 

What is the Social Construct?

What is a social construct? It’s an idea that has been created and accepted by the people in society. For example, gender is a social construct because society has referred to it as the characteristics of a woman, man, girl, or boy. This would include behaviors and roles associated with girls or women and men or boys as well as relationships between the two.

Gender roles for example were socially constructed. Men go out working and women in the kitchen, and then on from there. These also included the masculinity and femininity referred to as “women” and “men.” Just means women are the feminine ones and boys are masculine ones in relationships or interactions with each other. 

Pronouns

Now pronouns play a big part in gender and sex. As you know, you have pronouns, everyone does. The most commonly used pronouns are she/her or he/him.

Pronouns do not dictate gender and vice versa. As she/her and he/him pronouns are not assigned a gender, for many they are used as examples of masculinity and femininity. As pronouns are for how a person wishes to be referred to. Pronouns do not automatically equal someone’s gender or sex ‘cause just as gender pronouns are a personal and internet thing. No matter if they use she/her or he/him, you don’t assume their gender or sex.

Gender doesn’t equal a person(s) sex. As gender plays a part in identity it is also a part of intersectionality. Now sex is a biological and physical difference between female and male-assigned people at birth, this includes hormone levels and chromosomes. Gender is a social construct created on the roles and behavior of girls and women or boys and men. Though some people identify with the gender-assigned sex given to them at birth others don’t identify with them. These genders such as nonbinary and gender fluid come into play. As does gender identity this one of many that have to do with internal and personal experiences of gender, so how many genders are well most of society says there are only two, but using the terms gender identity and sex right there are more than two genders. Sex and gender are different in many ways.
