Are you involved in launching or running a new artist residency program?

The 2022 Emerging Program Institute (EPI) is designed to help you create and sustain inclusive, just, joyful, and accessible artist residencies.

This three-day intensive includes faculty-led sessions, artist presentations, interactive exercises and group discussions to provide attendees with the strategies, tools and networks to develop and strengthen all elements of their program utilizing ACA’s Five Pillars of Healthy Residency Framework: Identity, Program Design, Operational Excellence, Resource Development, and Stewardship.

Topics explored during EPI sessions include:

Community engagement and relevance of place;
Resource-building to sustain residency programs;
Equity and access in artist outreach and selection; and
Business planning and ongoing assessment

Description and Qualifications

The Opportunity

MacDowell, America’s oldest multidisciplinary artist residency program, seeks an Admissions Director for a full-time position starting in December 2026. The position will be based in Peterborough, New Hampshire although exceptional candidates based in New York City will also be considered.

Since its founding in 1907, MacDowell has provided crucial time and space to more than 9,500 artists working across seven creative disciplines and has hosted a veritable who’s who in arts and letters, including James Baldwin, Celine Song, Meredith Monk, Isabel Sandoval, Michael Chabon, Bebe Miller, Paula Vogel, and Faith Ringgold. Through the admissions process, MacDowell brings together artists whose chance encounters may forever influence one another’s work. No function of the program is more important than identifying the most compelling talent. This work provides the foundation upon which the entire organization can succeed and continue to attract future artists of the highest caliber.

MacDowell’s incoming Admissions Director (AD) will steward each step of the admissions process, providing a user-friendly experience for artist applicants, managing discipline-specific artist selection panels, and welcoming incoming Fellows before their arrival on campus. The AD oversees a small Admissions team that centers respect for artists, confidentiality, diplomacy, consistency, and clarity in their daily work.

The ideal candidate will combine a deep understanding of and passion for the arts with a rigorous approach to administration and the ability to communicate effectively across a diverse set of stakeholders, including Board members and donors. We are looking for a compassionate and collaborative leader who will provide steady, structured guidance to Admissions staff and a rotating roster of selection panelists.

Responsibilities:

Application Management

In partnership with Board and Staff leadership, ensure that MacDowell’s admissions process aligns with the organization’s strategic goals and priorities
Oversee the artist application experience
Research new trends in artists’ work and update application guidelines to support new formats and concepts; remain responsive to artists’ needs by staying on top of best practices for artist applications and trends in the field and in the world at large
Oversee external communications with artists related to their application, acceptance or rejection, and pre-arrival onboarding, coordinating with Communications staff to ensure that information is accurate and uses MacDowell’s institutional voice
Continuously evaluate the application process with an eye to improving the artist experience and increasing accessibility
Generate admissions-related statistics and reports as requested

Admissions Panel Management

MacDowell Fellows are selected by admissions panels, which are comprised of a revolving group of distinguished professionals in each artistic discipline who serve anonymously for up to three years.

Working with the Executive Director (ED), recruit, onboard, and steward ~80 panelists across 7 disciplines, collaborating with panel chairs to identify and evaluate potential panelists
Schedule, oversee, and actively manage 7 panel meetings for each application cycle
Oversee administrative work related to panels, including honorariums, travel arrangements, and confidentiality agreements
Conduct regular panel reviews of each artistic discipline to assess the effectives of MacDowell’s admissions process

Outreach

In partnership with staff leadership, increase awareness of MacDowell’s program through outreach to diverse artistic communities
Ensure residency listings and deadlines up to date on arts-related websites and platforms
Serve as a key ambassador for MacDowell by participating in outreach events, conferences, panel discussions and other art world convenings
Support Fundraising Staff on communications to fellowship funders and partners

Organizational

Manage a 2-3 person Admissions staff team
Set departmental priorities and work schedules; facilitate smooth cross-departmental collaboration as needed
Collaborate with IT Staff to oversee application software, data management, and reporting; identify and evaluate new technological tools to improve departmental processes
Coordinate with Finance Staff and the ED to create and oversee the department’s annual budget and expense reports
Attend Department Head and All-Staff Meetings
Manage the Board’s Admissions Committee; report to the Executive Committee and full Board as needed

Qualifications & Skills:

5+ years of professional experience leading projects and/or teams of similar size and scope
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities with changing priorities and accomplish objectives in a fast-paced environment
Strong organizational, project management, and proofreading skills
In depth knowledge of and passion for the arts and the artistic disciplines represented at MacDowell
Strong connections within diverse artistic communities
Ability to tactfully and diplomatically handle sensitive and confidential information
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to effectively steward relationships with artists, board members, donors, and program partners
Computer skills proficiency with MS Office suite required; Salesforce CRM preferred
Prior experience with admissions processes preferred
Familiarity with or willingness to learn software and systems tools for non-profit management
Enthusiastic, positive attitude and the ability to work both independently and in a team setting

Physical Requirements:

Ability to regularly commute to the New Hampshire office preferred
Ability to sit or stand in front of a computer workstation for 40 hours/week

Spend two to six weeks in The Crich Photography Studio — your own private studio with a black-and-white darkroom, digital photography setup, and mountain views. Designed for self-directed projects, this competitive program gives creative professionals the time, space, and focus to advance their work in analogue, digital, or select alternative processes. Whether pursuing research creation, exploration, or project development, participants can work in focused solitude or engage with Banff Centre’s vibrant artistic community, all within an inspiring mountain setting.

Description

This self-directed residency is unique in offering private use of The Crich Photography Studio which best supports projects involving:

• Black and white analogue photography (Film development, processing, and printing)
• Digital photography
• Some alternative processes including cyanotype

The residency is designed for independent work and does not include production support, technical assistance, or access to additional specialized facilities (i.e, colour darkroom, or digital printing access is not available). Residents are responsible for bringing all materials, equipment, and supplies required for their project.

Please note: The Crich Photography Studio is located in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed building, separate from the other Leighton Studios. The studio is wheelchair accessible, however the darkroom facilities are not. If you require wheelchair-accessible accommodation, please contact us to discuss available options.

Founded in 1993 by Darren O’Donnell, Mammalian Diving Reflex has created dozens of award-winning performances that tour internationally including Haircuts by Children, All the Sex I've Ever Had, Nightwalks with Teenagers, The Last Minutes Before Mars, Everything Has Disappeared, and Teentalitarianism.

Through theory, fieldwork, interviews, and collaborative creation, participants will learn transcript-based techniques, engage with the Banff community, and create a small internal presentation inspired by stories gathered through real-life encounters.

This workshop is presented by Theatre Alberta, Azimuth Theatre and Thou Art Here Theatre as part of the Workshops by Request: The Bow Valley Series.

Description

This workshop examines how art can bridge divides, facilitate understanding, and catalyze social change through face-to-face encounters in real life. Participants will:

Examine case studies from Mammalian's work to explore approaches to documentary theatre creation.
Learn interview and transcript-based techniques.
Venture into the community of Banff to prove that everyone is interesting.
Collaborate with fellow participants to create a small internal presentation from material gathered through interviews within the group

Leighton Studios are purpose-built, private workspaces designed to support a range of creative disciplines. For collaborative residencies, three Leighton Studios can accommodate groups or duos working together. For groups of two to eight people working collaboratively, the Painter House studio will accommodate your creative brainstorming and discussions. This large residence-style studio allows for collaboration and development of ideas in a comfortable environment.
For duos, you may also consider the Thom or Gerin-Lajoie studios.

This residency invites visual artists to apply with projects that consider how places sing, how memory persists in vibration and how listening to the land can re-orient ethical and political relations.

Drawing on concepts inherent to acoustic ecology and taking the mountains of Banff as inspiration, participants are invited to explore how sound activates multiple temporalities – shaped by land use, migration, ecological disruption, colonial infrastructures, and so on. The Earth can be thought of as a field of relations in which biological, geological and social processes co-create one another. Participants will reflect on ecological and ethical listening and sounding as it informs thinking, art-making and presentation.

Visual Arts residencies at Banff Centre are structured programs of faculty-led activity and mentorship, supporting project-based studio practice.

This program supports:

the development of theoretical concepts and artistic ideas through independent research alongside a structured program of faculty-led activities and workshops
one-to-one faculty mentorship through studio visits and faculty meetings
the development of technical skills through experimentation and skill-based learning assisted by staff technicians
peer-to-peer informal learning related to studio and professional practice
the development of a professional community towards developing and sustaining an artistic career.

Artists are assigned individual studios with access to shared production facilities. Knowledgeable staff are available to provide technical assistance.
