We are always looking to provide current, compelling and successful programming. Partnerships can offer a framework for opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach for each to achieve. A public / private school partnership can also highlight differences, provide a view into the unique systems and approaches that can deepen the collaboration, facilitate compromise, develop the sharing of best practices, and provide stakeholders an opportunity to achieve greater institutional resilience.

Lenke Sifko has been a Program Coordinator at Langara College CS for over 5 years, overseeing several programs, including the current co-delivery partnership for our new full-time 2D and 3D animation diploma programs.

From 2018-2023 the Federal government will invest $2 billion investment in Indigenous Skills and Employment Training. This presents tremendous potential to partner with Indigenous Peoples at the college, in Community, or with urban Indigenous organizations to meet Community-defined goals.

This session will focus on lessons learned over the past decade working with Indigenous Communities and includes opportunity for discussion and exchange of ideas. Olaf Nielsen is the Chair of Camosun’s Trades Training & Special Projects Department. He is also Chair of Camosun’s Coastal Skills Initiative which is geared towards meeting the needs of coastal communities and establishing a gateway for under-represented groups including women in the trades and Indigneous students seeking education and opportunity. He has over 30 years of experience in working with Indigenous Communities and other partners in the Province of British Columbia.

Susan Wilson is Coast Salish from the Cowichan Tribes and an Indigenous Peoples Trades Training Coordinator at Camosun College. She has an extensive background working in the areas of career employment and education, working with Indigenous Communities and youth.

Larry Underwood is Coast Salish and an Indigenous Peoples Trades Training Coordinator at Camosun College. He has extensive experience working directly with Communities to provide information and guidance on training, employment and education needs.

Indigenizing curriculum is in its infancy stage, and Langara College has just begun to explore how to develop and nurture this process. Creating a conversation around this topic is a step in the right direction. This is unknown territory and fears of being disrespectful are great. It is my desire to share with you my personal experience and the experiences had by my fellow Indigenous peers when encountering learning opportunities on this subject. I will also share with you the steps that Langara has taken so far to support the Indigenization of the institution and how they have affected those involved.

You may have noticed that the students we are working with are different than they were even five years ago. In this jam packed, overview session that will cite specific research, information and legislation, we will explore how current trends around student mental health, accessibility, freedom of expression, sexualized violence, threats to the learning environment, service expectations, communication styles and more, are complicating our work, classrooms and offices. Please bring questions and a sense of humour, you’ll need it.

Kyle Baillie is the Director of Student Life & Development at the University of the Fraser Valley. He has worked in post-secondary since 2002 in a variety of roles, at a variety of institutional types, in the US and Canada, and on both coasts. He holds a Master’s Degree in Leadership and Public Administration from Centenary University (Hackettstown, NJ) and a Bachelor’s degree from the same institution in Political Science (International Relations). Away from the office, Kyle is an avid cyclist, lover of old vehicles, and whisperer of French bulldogs.

A Panel of CE professionals from Vancouver Community College, Langara College, and Selkirk College will share their learnings and successes about marketing in their respective urban or rural contexts. Participants are also encouraged to share their experiences.

Helen is the Coordinator of Community Education and Workplace Training for the Grand Forks Campus at Selkirk College. Before joining Selkirk, Helen spent 7 years working in the field of executive education for the UBC Sauder School of Business and the London Business School. She has had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of individuals and organizations from small local businesses and non-profit groups to some of the world’s largest companies. Addressing their unique challenges has been a rewarding experience that has allowed Helen to broaden her understanding of the elements required to create successful and impactful learning interventions.

Sarah Murray is the Continuing Studies Marketing Liaison at VCC. Her background spans both the journalism and media relations industries. Her career began at small town community newspaper where she was employed as a reporter, photographer and darkroom technician. From there she headed to the bright lights of Toronto where she worked her way through job titles such as event coordinator and beauty editor. Since relocating to Vancouver over 17 years ago her experiences have grown to include west coast correspondent, fashion show coordinator, community relations manager, and publicist. Her role at VCC allows her to support the various programs in VCC CS and expand her marketing knowledge.

Pablo Vargas, MHA. A trilingual business professional with over 7 years’ experience in administrative leadership, including financial and budget management, quality assurance and resource management, strategic business planning, operations management and systems implementation in the education and healthcare fields. Our three government experts will share information on key policy initiatives from their Ministries’, each of which will have significant impact on the social and economic health of communities and citizens across the Province.

Catherine Poole, Executive Director of the BC Labour Market Programs Branch will present on the new Workforce Development Agreement and BC’s new WDA program framework. The presentation will highlight opportunities for post-secondary institutions to support program delivery.

Sarah Fraser, Executive Director of the BC Regional Development in the Ministry of Forest, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development will share recent findings regarding rural engagement and rural development.

Whitney Borowko, Director of Policy in the Strategic Policy Branch of the BC Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction is currently working on and will share the development of BC’s first poverty reduction strategy.

Sarah Fraser is the Executive Director - Rural Development, Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. Sarah has over 27 years of progressively senior experience working in the public service. Most of her career in government has focused on leading regional and community economic development programs throughout British Columbia.

Sarah leads three branches in the Ministry:

Rural Policy and Programs Branch with responsibility for the BC Rural Dividend which provides $25 million a year to assist rural communities to reinvigorate and diversify their local economies. The branch is also responsible for the development of rural policy and legislation.

Innovation, Bioeconomy and Indigenous Opportunities Branch which provides leadership in the development of forest sector innovation; leadership and support in wood innovation and the value-added sector; and leadership in the development of indigenous economic opportunities in B.C.

Regional Economic Operations Branch which delivers on-the-ground economic development support to communities throughout BC and leads the provincial government’s response to communities facing industry downsizing and closure, ensuring appropriate actions are taken to support workers and communities.

Prior to Sarah’s career as a public servant she worked for community newspapers and an international accounting firm.

Sarah lives in the Cowichan Valley on a small hobby farm with her husband Bruce and has four children and two grandchildren. Sarah holds a Master of Business Administration degree and enjoys woodworking and cycling.

Catherine Poole is the Executive Director, Labour Market Programs Branch, Labour Market and Information Division, Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. Catherine holds a Master’s degree in Social/Cultural Anthropology from U of T and has worked in government for over 25 years, in the areas of planning, policy, programming, data, evaluation, and intergovernmental relations. Catherine is passionate about the public service and is particularly keen on finding ways to be innovative and creative in program design and administration, with a focus on achieving results for British Columbians.

Whitney Borowko is a Director of Policy in the Strategic Policy Branch of B.C.’s Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. She is currently the lead Director working on the development of B.C.’s first poverty reduction strategy. Whitney’s key areas of expertise include strategic policy development, organizational leadership and social innovation. Before joining the B.C. Government, she worked as a manager and senior policy analyst for the federal government, leading files related to income security, disability policy, newcomer integration and social innovation. She has a Masters degree in Public Policy from Simon Fraser University and a Graduate Diploma in Social Innovation from Waterloo.

We’ll look at International Education - a non-traditional program area in Continuing Studies and examine the similarities, differences, challenges, and rewards of creating programs for international students. The importance of a partnership with International Education is imperative to succeed in this rapidly expanding market. We’ll address developing a relationship with IEd regarding recruitment, program interest and more.

Eleanor has been with Langara since 2010 but she took some odd twists to get there. Eleanor was a dental assistant for 25 years and discovered a love of teaching when she taught dental radiology to second year dental students at UBC Dental School. After completing her BA in Art History, and a Diploma in Adult Education, she said goodbye to UBC and embarked on a new career path. Eleanor worked in Job Clubs, at UBC in Training and Development, and did a stint in ladies’ fashion, before landing the role of Program Coordinator, Government Contracts at Langara (thanks Lynn and Gemma!). As her enthusiasm in adult learning took wing, with the end of her role in government contracts, and support of managers and the dean, Eleanor started creating programs for CS such as the Dental Reception Certificate Program, built the Summer Camps for Teens programs from the ground up, and is now launching a 2-year PDD program in Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance. She finds it remarkable that at this stage of her working life she is involved in such important, creative, and rewarding work. She thanks her CS team at Langara for all the help and hugs along the way.

In this collaborative and interactive workshop we’ll discuss the business case in an educational context. Drawing from our collective experience we’ll share some tips, tricks, and best practices for creating concise, effective, well-researched, and convincing business cases for all occasions...

Michael Yue is a Senior Project Coordinator at Vancouver Community College. For over 18 years he has been involved with nearly 100 program development projects of varying scales, working with multiple stakeholder groups to bring projects from conception to completion. He has produced many proposals and concept papers, successfully convincing decision makers and funders to support important projects.

Claire Sauvé has been working in education for nearly two decades, initially in the Math Departments at the University of Calgary and York University, later as the Education Coordinator and Curriculum Developer for the Physician Health Program of BC. Claire is the Sr. Program Coordinator of Continuing Education at VCC, where she oversees and supports all the new program development, evaluation, revision, and renewal.
