I wish there was a more friction less way of tracking my time. I’m going to try stopping tracking right now at 12:04pm. It could just be that I’m drained by my sub optimal biometrics today.*

Problems With Manually Time Tracking:

The data isn’t organized so I’m not really reviewing the data.

Tracking my time helps me focus. However, there is an unintended consequence. Focused time is easy to track. But because of my tracking, I’m avoiding doing activities that are difficult to track. For example, it’s draining to keep mental note of all the activities I’m doing during explorative, unfocused session of time.

These explorative blocks of time are important. It’s when our lateral creative thinking happens.

To improve the time tracking, I need to allow for explorative unfocused time. If the tracking process was more automatic, that would help.

I also need to DO something with the data. I’m not going to review it if it’s just a list of items. And I’m not going to be excited about tracking if I’m not looking forward to reviewing it.

When I track my food intake, I’m always excited to see perfect micro nutrient scores. I look forward to reviewing the data. Which keeps me motivated to track my food consumption.

Solutions:

Using an automated service like RescueTime might help me.

A blog post with more ideas on time tracking: Time Tracking Tutorial with suggestions on how to connect other app to RescueTime

I’d also like to always have a widget on my website that says what I’m doing right now. I have no respect for my own privacy.

Time Tracking

8:17-11:09: breakfast, walk to post office and back to mail eBay stuff

11:09-11:29: meal plan for the day

11:29-11:40: Bathroom and read about period and nutrition, get ready to work

11:40-11:56: blog and post to linked in

I stoped tracking my time here.

*Turns out I had a low grade fever, which I didn’t realize at the time of writing. My biology probably played a bigger role in the mental drain than I thought.

My body hasn’t recovered from poor sleep Friday night. I’m having eye twitches and my heart rate and heart rate variability aren’t optimal.

In spite of my body’s stress, I still have work to do. So I need to reduce as much stress as I can through mindset. I can’t change my circumstance, but I can control my mindset. That may be enough.

I’m glad it was just one sale, because everything that could go wrong did. In response, I reacted with elevated anxiety. But Eureka! I realized all this “going wrong” is just the norm. Being calm in the face of blunders. Executing. It’s a game! Or even meditation.

Yesterday, I finished posting 5 items on Ebay. My goal was to finish that by Saturday, but I already finished it by Thursday. Unfortunately, I have a funeral to go to, so I probably won’t have much time today anyways. And tonight is Shabbas and I always help my mom and dad cook for Shabbas.

I’m going to research a few things I own that I can post on Ebay that I want to sell.

Next day thoughts 1-18-20:

Yesterday was the first day in 381 days that I missed a day of coding!

It hurts!!

Alas, my goal for this year is to shift my focus away from taking action for the sake of streaks. Instead, I’m focusing on prioritizing my actions day-by-day. Yesterday, I wanted to code, but coding wasn’t the most important action I needed to take.

RIP code streak. Long live massive action.

This would keep me so accountable. Could you imagine if I had to publicly admit to googling the dumb things I waste time on?

Time Tracking App Idea

Would be interesting if the app could all be automated based on phone and computer use. If the app detects no activity, it asks what you were doing during that time.

Of course this could be overwhelming. Maybe I should just create a public log of time spent on different sites and what I searched. I bet I could do this with shell scripting.

Manual Time Tracking

Or I could start by doing it the old fashion manual way!

Analog Time Tracking:

Starting at 11:38am

11:38-12:07: Listed An Item on Ebay

12:07-12:48: Cleaned a can and ruined it 🙁 . Listed it anyways as a set with another can

12:48-1:03: started to clean another can. responded to linked in comments. Family text about my birthday

1:03-1:15: listed another can on Ebay

1:16-1:20: put can away. Used the can (toilet). Is this getting too granular?

1:20-1:26: jog around block

1:27-1:45: prepped lunch

1:45-2:02: ate lunch and watched the office

2:02-2:18: Social media- replied to some people. All good stuff.

Now it’s 2:20 and I’m not sure what to do next. What would be most beneficial? Some Ideas:

  • Post/Create Content
  • Shower
  • Journal

2:2?-2-30: Paid for 750words.com membership

2:30-2:57: Journaled on 750words.com

2:57-3:15: took a Tik Tok video. Having trouble editing. Might need to update

3:15-3:18: send condolence text

3:25-3:40: nap

3:40-3:54: social media and get ready to shower

3:54-4:18: shower and get dressed

4:25-4:34: prepped dinner

4:34-4:45: dinner

4:50-6:00: travel to coding meetup, talked on social media

6-8: coding meetup

8-10: travel home, and grocery store, then bed

  • Listed one item on Ebay
  • Sorted through my vintage soda cans. Researched can sales on Ebay. Determining what to list.
  • Researched vintage can features and value
  • Edited my dev.to post. Asked a friend on twitter to review it
  • Asked a friend on twitter for advice with ebay sales
  • Worked on React native Weight Watchers app

It would be great to get a better sense of my time use. Yesterday, I wasted time on social media. I wasted time today too and it’s only 10am.

My biggest time-waster is when I go to the bathroom and I think, “Might as well go on my phone and multi task.” But this turns a 1-5 minutes bathroom break into an extended phone break.

Being tired yesterday didn’t help. Tiredness leads to laziness. But, after returning to my early dinner routine, I got a good nights sleep. My Oura ring has been showing me that later meals interact with my resting heart rate while sleeping.

Wrapping Up

I spent the first half of the day working on Ebay. Then I worked on my two meetups. After dinner, I worked on coding.

Other uses of my time:

  • Meal prep
  • Social media- Both Good and Bad
  • Exercise
  • Journaling
  • Eating
  • And probably later I will hang out with my spouse before bed.

On social media I spent too much time reading stupid things I disliked. This is a bad use of my time.

I also conversed with some fellow peers about goals. This was a good use of my time on social.

What Could I Have Done Better?

Stop searching out stupid content. I have a bad habit of searching out posts I disagree with and then silently go over every reason the poster is stupid for their opinion. This is a shameful habit. What kind of person finds pleasure in the logical blunders of others? An ego maniac.

I need figurative blinders. Blinders to everything that isn’t useful. A wise person finds smart content on posts they disagree with.

Stop going on my phone when I’m on the toilet. It wastes time.

Do something nice for my parents. Maybe clean something or make them healthy food. Or hug them more.

Blogging did three things:

  1. Kept me accountable
  2. Organized my reference material, findings, and thoughts
  3. Shared said information with others who also want to learn

I want to do the same with my entrepreneurial journey. Maybe it will help others learn. Though, I’m not committing to blogging everyday.

Getting Priorities Straight

Normally, I go immediately into coding after my morning routine. But I wanted to get my priorities straightened out. To help with prioritization, I journaled for a bit on 750words.com before starting work.

After reflecting and brainstorming, I settled on this half fleshed out 30 day goal:

  1. Start selling on Ebay
  2. Use the money I make to test business ideas through fake ads
  3. Once I settle on an idea, continue to use Ebay to fund the business

I want to go with a small business idea that’s easy to start. Like one-on-one services or group events. Then scale the business up. The business ideas I came up with all revolve around my passions: food, fitness, health, or lucid dreaming. And of course I can utilize my new found tech skills.

Ebay

For the next 5 days, I plan to work on Ebay. Made my first listing today. I reached out to an experienced Ebay-er for advice.

#Helpmecode

I worked on my helpmecode project by writing an article on how to use the #helpmecode hashtag.

What Could I Have Done Better?

I felt tired today. Because I felt tired, laziness ensued and I went on social media more than necessary. But, I was also productive on social media, so it wasn’t all that bad.

I think I was tired because I ate late meals the last few nights. Late meals raise my heart rate while sleeping. I’m back to fasting after 5pm. With this adjustment, hopefully, my sleep will improve.
