CAHN-ACHN – Vera Roberts’ Research Award/Bourse de recherche
Call for Applications/ Appel à Candidatures
The Canadian Association for the History of Nursing (CAHN-ACHN) invites applications for the Vera Roberts’ Endowment (VRE). The VRE provides funding to qualified investigators for historical research and publication of topics related to outpost nursing or nursing in remote areas with priority given to circumpolar regions (defined as “North of 60 degrees parallel” for Canada). Eligible applicants include graduate and post-doctoral students, established researchers in nursing history, and persons with informal experience in historical research.

L’Association canadienne pour l’histoire du nursing (CAHN-ACHN) sollicite des candidatures pour Le Fonds Vera Roberts (FVR). Le FVR fournit des subventions à des enquêteures qualifiées* pour leurs recherches et publications en histoire du nursing en régions éloignées au Canada. Une priorité est accordée aux régions circumpolaires canadiennes (c’est à dire celle au nord du 60ième parallèle). Les enquêteures admissibles comprennent: les graduées et celles qui font des études postdoctorales, les chercheures reconnues en histoire du nursing, ainsi que les personnes possédant de l’expérience non-professionelle en recherche de type historique.

The Vicky Bach Fonds are now available at the McMaster Health Sciences Library. Vicky Bach was a clinical nurse specialist with expertise in gerontology, medicine, and palliative care. Each year at the CAHN conference the Vicky Bach Award is awarded to the best student paper.
The Vicky Bach collection features records documenting Vicky Bach’s nursing career. Fonds is arranged into the following series: Master of science records; Nursing employment records; Presentations and related material; Oral history interview recordings and related material; and Project records. Fonds also contains the following files: Profile of and internal memorandum about CRNBC Nursing Excellence Award recipient Vicky Bach; and Memorial records and obituary. Each year at the CAHN conference the Vicky Bach Memorial Prize is awarded to the best student paper.

Congratulations to Letitia B. Johnson (PhD Candidate at the University of Saskatchewan) this year’s winner of the Vicky Bach Memorial Prize!
Letitia’s paper, Worthy of Providing Care: Japanese-Canadian Health Care Providers during Internment, was presented at the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine and the Canadian Association for the History of Nursing joint conference, held virtually June 1-2, 2021.
Paper abstract:
While Japanese-Canadian internment during the Second World War is well studied by historians, attention to the effect of internment on the community’s health care has not received much attention from scholars. More significantly, the role of Japanese-Canadian health care professionals, who were themselves internees, in providing care to their own segregated ethnic community has not been addressed by historians. This paper begins an important contribution to segregated health care history in Canada by focusing on the essential labour of Japanese-Canadians in the provisioning of health care within the internment scheme.
More specifically, this paper considers the construct of “white” health care providers and how this racialized construct influenced the work Japanese-Canadian physicians, nurses, and others did during internment. It asks, how did White notions of medical professionalism, in parallel with efforts to prove themselves “Canadian”, influence how Japanese-Canadian health care providers approached and framed their work.
