Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire from the Spanish Grand Prix after a sudden brake failure turned a promising Ferrari run into an early exit.

Lewis Hamilton’s Spanish Grand Prix ended in the most unexpected way after a sudden brake problem forced him to retire within the opening laps. The Ferrari driver had started aggressively and was immediately involved in the fight near the front before the issue transformed his race.

The seven-time world champion said the first warning came while braking for Turn 5. At first, the car still slowed down, but the brake pedal suddenly behaved differently and Hamilton entered the corner at much higher speed than expected.

The problem then appeared to disappear briefly. That gave Hamilton some hope that the issue was only temporary.

Hamilton Thought the Problem Had Gone Away

During the following corner, the brakes returned to normal operation. Hamilton therefore believed he could continue without major consequences.

However, that situation changed only moments later. The braking system failed again, this time in a much more serious way.

“The pedal went completely to the floor,” Hamilton explained after the retirement.

At that point, there was little he could do. Without reliable braking performance, continuing to push was impossible, so Hamilton focused on bringing the Ferrari back to the pits.

Lewis Hamilton attacks during the opening laps of the Spanish Grand Prix before his Ferrari suffers a sudden brake failure.

Hamilton admitted that simply making it back to the garage was a relief.

“I was lucky to get back,” he said.

The comment underlined how quickly the situation had escalated. What had started as a strange pedal response became a complete loss of confidence in the brakes within only a few corners.

A Promising Start Turned Into an Early Retirement

The retirement was even more frustrating because Hamilton had looked competitive from the moment the race started. He immediately entered a battle involving Max Verstappen and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Hamilton also found himself alongside Verstappen approaching the first corner. The Ferrari driver said he had the advantage on the inside while Verstappen tried to remain around the outside.

“I beat him off the start into Turn 1,” Hamilton explained.

Verstappen ultimately ran wide and returned to the track ahead. Red Bull then instructed the Dutchman to give the position back, adding another dramatic moment to an already intense opening.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen fight for position through the opening sequence of corners in Madrid.

Despite that promising start, Hamilton never had the opportunity to discover how competitive the Ferrari could have been over a full race distance.

Instead, the brake issue brought everything to an abrupt end.

Ferrari’s Reliability Problem Came at the Worst Moment

The timing made the retirement particularly painful for Hamilton and Ferrari. The team had entered the weekend with confidence in the car’s reliability, yet a sudden and serious braking problem appeared almost immediately once the race began.

Moreover, this was not a gradual loss of performance that Hamilton could manage with different driving techniques. The problem progressed from an unusual pedal sensation to a complete drop to the floor.

That left Hamilton with no realistic way to continue competing.

Lewis Hamilton’s Spanish GP Ends With More Questions

The Lewis Hamilton brake failure turned a potentially strong Spanish Grand Prix into an early retirement. His comments also showed that the problem developed rapidly, giving him almost no opportunity to react before the brakes became unusable.

Hamilton had been right in the middle of the battle at the front during the opening moments. Instead, he spent the rest of his race simply trying to get the Ferrari back safely.

For Ferrari, the incident will now raise important questions about what caused the failure and how it can be prevented from happening again. For Hamilton, it was another frustrating example of how quickly a promising Formula 1 weekend can change when reliability becomes the decisive factor.

Oscar Piastri finished eighth at the Spanish Grand Prix and admitted that extracting the full potential from a very fast McLaren has been harder for him this season.

Oscar Piastri left the Spanish Grand Prix frustrated after finishing eighth. While McLaren teammate Lando Norris fought at the front, Piastri spent much of the race recovering from a difficult opening and traffic. After the race, the Australian was unusually self-critical. He believes the McLaren has plenty of speed, but getting all of that performance out of it has become harder for him this season.

A Difficult Race From the Start

Piastri’s afternoon was compromised almost immediately after an incident with George Russell. The contact cost him positions and also caused damage to the McLaren.

He said being trapped between another car and the wall left him with nowhere to go. From there, both track position and the damage made his recovery much harder.

Oscar Piastri’s race was compromised early after contact with George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix.

The Tires Made Things Worse

McLaren tried to recover by extending Piastri’s first stint. He completed 42 laps on the hard tires before making his pit stop.

The strategy worked reasonably well in clean air, where Piastri said the McLaren had strong pace. However, he became stuck behind Liam Lawson and lost valuable time in traffic.

Piastri struggled to make progress once he became trapped in traffic during his long first stint.

The situation did not improve after the pit stop. Piastri rejoined in a train of four cars, limiting the benefit of the fresh medium tires.

He also found the medium compound difficult to manage. According to Piastri, it worked well for only one lap before its performance dropped significantly.

Piastri’s Biggest Concern Is Himself

Despite the result, Piastri continues to believe strongly in the McLaren’s underlying performance.

He said the Spanish weekend showed that the car can produce excellent pace. The bigger challenge is finding a reliable way to access that performance consistently.

Piastri says McLaren has strong underlying speed, but extracting it consistently remains difficult.

That has become one of the Australian’s main objectives for the rest of the season. Piastri admitted that he has personally struggled more this year to extract the car’s full potential compared with some of the drivers around him.

McLaren will now look toward Baku, where Piastri expects the team to remain competitive. The speed appears to be there. The challenge is turning that potential into consistent performance every weekend.

Max Verstappen says Madring offers almost no overtaking opportunities, while both he and Lando Norris have questioned the layout and the unusually long pit lane.

The new Madring circuit may be entertaining over a single lap, but Formula 1 drivers are already questioning whether it can deliver a good race. Max Verstappen was particularly critical after qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, arguing that the track offers very few opportunities to overtake. He also believes several braking zones could have been designed differently to create more side-by-side racing.

Verstappen Wants Better Overtaking Zones

Verstappen said he has yet to find a corner at Madring where overtaking feels straightforward. In his view, many braking zones force drivers to turn while braking, leaving only one effective racing line and making it much easier for the car ahead to defend.

The Red Bull driver joked that he could redesign the track himself if given the circuit plan, but he also said he would be willing to share his ideas with the FIA and circuit designers.

Max Verstappen says Madring’s braking zones leave little room for side-by-side battles.

Verstappen pointed to Austin as an example of a circuit that allows more opportunities to fight. Its wider corners give drivers the chance to attack and continue battling even when an initial overtaking attempt fails.

The Pit Lane Is Another Problem

The drivers also have concerns about Madring’s unusually long pit lane. The pit complex is split into separate sections because of an IFEMA exhibition hall, creating a layout that Verstappen says is not particularly practical.

Lando Norris had already raised the issue, and Verstappen agreed that the FIA understands the concern.

Madring’s unusually long pit lane could influence strategy and discourage additional pit stops.

That could become especially important during Sunday’s race. Tire degradation has been higher than expected, which would normally encourage more pit stops. However, the time lost in Madring’s pit lane could make teams reluctant to stop unless the benefit is substantial.

Battery Management Is Still Frustrating

Verstappen also highlighted another problem that has followed the 2026 regulations to Madrid: energy management.

The Red Bull driver said that pushing too hard through some sections can leave the car without enough battery energy for the following straight. Drivers therefore have to lift off the throttle in certain corners to recharge the battery and recover performance later in the lap.

Verstappen says battery management is forcing drivers to sacrifice speed in some corners at Madring.

That has taken away some of the excitement from driving the new track. Verstappen still sees potential in Madring, however, and believes modifications to certain sections could make the circuit significantly better.

For Max Verstappen Madring, the verdict so far is mixed. The circuit can be demanding and enjoyable over one lap, but its limited overtaking opportunities, long pit lane, and energy-management challenges could produce a less exciting race than the drivers and fans are hoping for.

Oscar Piastri was left frustrated after qualifying seventh at Madring, while McLaren teammate Lando Norris took pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Oscar Piastri described his Madring qualifying session as a major disappointment after finishing seventh on the grid. The McLaren driver struggled to find a consistent rhythm throughout the weekend and could not match teammate Lando Norris, who produced a spectacular final lap to take pole position. Piastri admitted that his session never really came together and that he simply needs to reset before Sunday’s race.

Piastri Never Found the Rhythm

Piastri had struggled for consistency from the start of the weekend. Aside from FP3, he failed to finish inside the top six in any practice session or qualifying segment.

He was 0.360 seconds behind Norris in Q1 and 0.331 seconds slower in Q2. His first Q3 attempt briefly put him close to his teammate, but the final run went badly.

Oscar Piastri struggled to find a consistent rhythm during qualifying at Madring.

Piastri improved by just 0.248 seconds on his second Q3 attempt. Norris, meanwhile, found seven tenths despite losing around three tenths at the final corner.

“It Was Pretty Messy”

The Australian said his second Q3 lap was particularly poor. He believes the problems were not caused by one specific issue, but by a series of small mistakes that disrupted his rhythm.

Piastri also pointed to an aborted Q1 lap as something that made the rest of the session more difficult. On a demanding new circuit such as Madring, losing that sequence can quickly become costly.

Piastri said his qualifying session became difficult after losing his rhythm early in Q1.

Despite the disappointing result, Piastri said he felt more comfortable with the behavior of the McLaren than he had in previous weekends.

That leaves him hopeful that the race could be a different story.

Norris Shows the Pace Piastri Could Not Find

Piastri admitted that pole position probably never looked realistic from his side of the garage. He believed a strong lap could have moved him further forward, but Norris produced something special when it mattered most.

The Briton’s final effort was enough to overcome a large gap and secure the top spot.

Lando Norris found seven tenths on his final run to take pole while Piastri remained seventh.

For Oscar Piastri Madring, qualifying seventh is far from the result McLaren wanted from its second car. Still, Piastri believes the underlying behavior of the MCL40 is better than the final classification suggests. He now has one more chance to turn a difficult qualifying into a stronger result when the Spanish Grand Prix begins.

Charles Leclerc will start fifth at Madring after Ferrari missed out on pole, but the Monegasque believes he extracted almost everything from the SF-26.

Charles Leclerc will start the Spanish Grand Prix in fifth place after another extremely tight qualifying session at Madring. Ferrari finished fourth and fifth, but Leclerc was satisfied with his performance. The Monegasque believes he pushed the car close to its limit and may even have gone slightly too far in some corners. He also lost a few hundredths on the straights by running the older specification.

Ferrari Was Close to the Front

The gap between the top five cars was less than two tenths, making every small mistake important. Leclerc said his Q3 lap was strong overall, even though he believes he exceeded the limit in a few corners.

He also pointed to the older specification as another source of lost time. Despite that, he felt Ferrari did a good job extracting the maximum from the SF-26.

Charles Leclerc qualified fifth at Madring and will start Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix from the third row.

Leclerc was only around a tenth and a half from pole. In such a close session, that could have been enough to gain several positions.

Every Hundredth Matters at Madring

Leclerc knows that all drivers can usually find something extra on a circuit this demanding. The tiny margins in qualifying therefore become especially important at Madring.

Ferrari’s SF-26 has also shown stronger race pace than qualifying performance this season, giving Leclerc some reason to remain optimistic about Sunday.

Ferrari was within striking distance of pole, but tiny margins separated Leclerc from the front row.

The biggest concern is overtaking. Drivers have already indicated that passing could be extremely difficult on the new Madrid circuit.

That makes the start and tire management particularly important.

Tire Wear Could Decide the Race

Leclerc expects the opening lap to be crucial, but tire degradation could have an even bigger impact over the full race distance.

Free practice revealed issues with the front tires, and Ferrari still does not know exactly how the compounds will behave over a long stint.

Leclerc expects tire management to play a major role in the Spanish Grand Prix at Madring.

For Charles Leclerc Madring, fifth place is not necessarily a bad starting position. Ferrari may have missed a chance to qualify higher, but the race could look very different once tire wear becomes a factor. With overtaking expected to be difficult, every strategic decision and every position gained at the start could prove decisive.

Lewis Hamilton admits Ferrari was never truly in pole contention at Madring, although he believes a stronger final lap could have put him ahead of Max Verstappen.

Hamilton Never Felt Close to Pole

Hamilton briefly appeared at the top after his first Q3 attempt, but the other drivers improved significantly on their final runs.

The Ferrari driver said he does not know exactly how his rivals found so much extra performance, but believes they have something Ferrari currently does not.

Lewis Hamilton qualified fourth at Madring and will start from the second row of the grid.

Hamilton also admitted that Ferrari’s tire preparation was not perfect. He noticed understeer through the final corner and felt the front tires were not initially in the ideal operating window.

Ferrari Missed a Chance at Third

Although pole was out of reach, Hamilton believes Ferrari had a realistic opportunity to beat Verstappen.

He was less than two tenths away from pole and only a few hundredths behind the Red Bull, making third place a much more realistic target than the top spot.

Hamilton believes a stronger final Q3 attempt could have moved him ahead of Max Verstappen.

The problem was not simply one corner. Hamilton said the car had more understeer throughout the lap, while the rear also felt more active than during his previous attempt.

That small loss of balance proved costly in an extremely tight qualifying session.

Tire Degradation Could Change Everything

Ferrari now turns its attention to Sunday’s race, where tire degradation could completely alter the competitive order.

The team arrived in Madrid expecting the tires to last well, but Friday’s running showed considerably more degradation than anticipated. Track evolution has improved grip, but Hamilton still does not know what to expect over a full race distance.

Ferrari hopes the tire behavior at Madring will create an opportunity during Sunday’s race.

For Lewis Hamilton Ferrari, the challenge is now to turn fourth on the grid into a stronger race result. Hamilton knows Ferrari lacks the outright qualifying pace of some rivals, but the uncertain tire behavior could give the Scuderia an opportunity once the race begins.

Hyundai wants XRT to become a broader rugged sub-brand, with more SUVs and future XRT Pro models aimed at buyers who want a tougher look and greater off-road capability.

Hyundai is preparing to take its XRT formula much further. The brand is considering factory-built XRT and XRT Pro versions across a much larger portion of its lineup. Australia could become an important market for the expansion, with Hyundai product planning chief Jonathan Lam saying the company is evaluating rugged versions across several models. The strategy would let Hyundai capitalize on demand for SUVs with tougher styling, all-terrain tires, and a more adventurous image.

XRT Could Become a Bigger Sub-Brand

Hyundai doesn’t need to create an entirely new vehicle for every XRT model. The company can share much of the visual treatment across different nameplates. More serious XRT Pro versions could then receive additional hardware where improved off-road capability makes sense.

That approach gives Hyundai a relatively efficient way to expand the family. The brand already has a large SUV lineup, giving XRT plenty of potential candidates.

Hyundai is considering expanding the XRT and XRT Pro formula across more models and markets.

Dedicated Off-Roaders Could Be Next

Hyundai’s plans could eventually go beyond upgraded versions of existing SUVs. The Crater concept has already explored the idea of a dedicated rugged vehicle designed to challenge models such as the Jeep Wrangler. The larger Boulder concept takes the idea further with a body-on-frame architecture.

These concepts suggest Hyundai may eventually build vehicles designed from the ground up for serious off-road use rather than simply adding tougher styling to existing models.

The Hyundai Crater concept points toward a possible dedicated off-road model for the future.

The XRT Family Is Already Growing

Hyundai currently offers XRT versions of models including the Santa Fe, Palisade, Santa Cruz, and Ioniq 5. The new Tucson is also joining the family, while the larger Ioniq 9 is expected to receive an XRT version.

There is a clear reason for the strategy. Many buyers like the appearance of rugged SUVs even when most of their driving happens on paved roads. A standard XRT package can provide that look without the compromises that come with serious off-road hardware.

Hyundai already offers XRT models across several SUVs and is preparing to expand the lineup further.

That’s the balance Hyundai is trying to find with Hyundai XRT. The visual changes can attract adventure-minded customers without sacrificing everyday comfort, efficiency, or refinement. XRT Pro can then go further for buyers who actually plan to leave the pavement. And if the Crater and Boulder concepts become production vehicles, Hyundai could eventually have a much more complete off-road family at the top of the range.

A rare 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S with 24,000 miles is heading to auction, and its Guards Red specification closely resembles Michael Jordan’s famous car.

One of the Rarest Air-Cooled 911s

The car belongs to the final generation of air-cooled 911s, making it especially desirable among Porsche collectors. Fewer than 200 examples of the 993 Turbo S reached the United States, and surviving cars in excellent condition have become increasingly valuable.

This particular example comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and received a major mechanical refresh in 2023. The work included replacing various belts and seals, helping prepare the car for regular driving despite its low mileage.

This 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S wears Guards Red paint over a black leather interior.

424 Horsepower and a Six-Speed Manual

The Turbo S received larger turbochargers than the standard Turbo, along with upgraded cooling and engine-management systems designed to handle the additional boost.

The result was 424 horsepower, sent through a six-speed manual transmission to all four wheels.

That combination made the Turbo S a formidable performance car, but its appeal today goes beyond acceleration. The all-wheel-drive system and substantial power also gave it the character of a high-performance grand tourer that could be enjoyed in a wide range of conditions.

The air-cooled Turbo S produces 424 horsepower and sends power to all four wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Auction Is Already Expensive

The collector-car market has pushed rare air-cooled Porsche values dramatically higher, and this Turbo S is no exception. At the time of writing, bidding had already reached $650,000.

That figure is enough to buy two modern 911 Turbo S models, but it also highlights why collectors are willing to pay so much for the final air-cooled Turbo S models.

The 993 Turbo S is one of the rarest versions of the final air-cooled 911 generation.

The Porsche 911 Turbo S auction ends September 18. Whether this example reaches a new record remains to be seen, but its rarity, low mileage, original specification, and resemblance to Michael Jordan’s famous Guards Red Porsche make it an especially intriguing collector car.

The new Mini special edition borrows the JCW’s suspension and brakes while keeping the 161-hp Cooper engine and a $38,225 starting price.

Mini is adding another performance-focused special edition to its lineup. The 2027 Mini 1998 GT takes the suspension and brake hardware from the hotter John Cooper Works models but keeps the standard Cooper’s 161-hp engine. The result is a less powerful alternative to the JCW with a lower starting price of $38,225.

JCW Hardware Without the Extra Power

The 1998 GT uses the same brake and suspension setup as the Mini Cooper JCW. That should give the special edition sharper handling and stronger stopping performance, even though its engine is much less powerful.

Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 161 horsepower. Mini’s goal is to create a middle ground between the regular Cooper and the full JCW.

The 2027 Mini 1998 GT combines the Cooper’s 161-hp engine with suspension and brakes from the JCW.

The Price Is Complicated

At $38,225, the 1998 GT stays below $40,000. However, the pricing makes its position in the Mini lineup somewhat difficult.

The Cooper S costs less than $35,000 while producing 201 horsepower. Meanwhile, the JCW starts at $40,075 and delivers 228 horsepower.

That means the 1998 GT is paying a premium for its upgraded chassis rather than outright engine performance.

The Mini 1998 GT costs $38,225, positioning it between the Cooper S and John Cooper Works.

Reservations Are Open

Mini is already accepting reservations for the 1998 GT. The special edition is part of the brand’s “Icon drop” series, which will include two additional models.

The next special edition is scheduled to be revealed in October.

The 1998 GT is the latest special edition in Mini’s Icon drop series.

For the Mini 1998 GT, the appeal is clear: it brings some of the most important performance hardware from the JCW into a less powerful and slightly more affordable package. Whether buyers see that as the ideal balance will depend on how much they value handling upgrades over additional horsepower.

Toyota is exploring a system that could use a driver’s gaze and the vehicle’s exterior cameras to capture images of roadside objects without requiring a phone.

Modern vehicles already have cameras covering almost every angle, and Toyota has found a potential new use for them. A recently published U.S. patent application describes a system that could identify where the driver is looking and then use exterior vehicle cameras to capture an image of whatever has caught their attention. The idea would let drivers document roadside sights without reaching for a phone while driving.

The Car Watches Where You Look

Toyota’s patent, “Systems and Methods for Capturing Driver-Relevant Road Scene Information,” describes using an interior camera to monitor the driver’s line of sight. The vehicle could then select one or more exterior cameras and capture images of the relevant scene.

The driver could start the process with a voice command or a button. The patent also describes standing instructions, such as asking the car to photograph classic cars it spots nearby.

Toyota’s patent could use an interior camera to determine where the driver is looking and exterior cameras to capture the scene.

The system could also photograph specific roadside objects, such as billboards. Images could include location information, allowing users to revisit the exact place later.

It Could Work Like Google Lens on Wheels

The technology goes beyond simply taking pictures. Toyota describes a system that could let drivers review the captured images later on a smartphone or another personal device.

The images could also be analyzed to identify objects and provide information such as their source or price. Multiple cameras could even work together to create a three-dimensional view of an object.

Multiple vehicle cameras could capture different angles of an object and potentially create a 3D representation.

Toyota also imagines the system recognizing a driver’s inferred interests. In that scenario, the vehicle could automatically capture images of objects it believes the driver might find interesting.

That could make the feature useful, but it also raises obvious questions about privacy and how much the vehicle should monitor its occupants.

The Patent Goes Beyond Photography

One of the more unusual ideas in the filing involves using information about a user’s health to make suggestions during a trip.

Toyota gives an example in which the system could recommend a walking break and analyze pedestrian activity along the route. It could then suggest places where the user might prefer to walk based on whether they want a busier or quieter environment.

Toyota’s concept could eventually combine vehicle cameras, location data, and other information to provide personalized recommendations.

For Toyota hands-free camera, the technology remains only a patent application, so there is no guarantee it will ever reach a production vehicle. Still, it shows how automakers are looking beyond traditional driver assistance and using the growing number of cameras inside and outside modern vehicles for entirely new tasks.
