Raw Material for Printing Ink In the printing house, many types of raw materials are used. Some of them are listed here:
In printing inks manufacturing, mineral oils are needed that have the ability to absorb oxygen along with fast drying properties. Chemically, these have more than 120 iodine value and carry a higher fat ratio.
Linseed Oil
This is a famous oil for printing inks, paint coating, lacquer, and varnish manufacturing. It is prepared by oil mill machines. In ink making, it is purified before use.
Lithographic Varnish
This is a well-concentrated type of linseed oil.
China Wood Oil
Also called tung oil, it is frequently used in ink making due to its property of drying in a shorter period. It is resistant to water and alkali.
Soybean Oil
Heavily used in printing ink formulations, it is an alternative to linseed oil. The iodine value of this oil is 125. It is classified under oils that have a long drying period.
Pryela Oil
Among all oils, it has the highest iodine value and dries very quickly. It brings shine and smoothness to the ink.
Heavy Mineral Oil
A petroleum product used in printing inks. These oils are heavy mineral oils used in cheap ink formulations.
Rapeseed Oil
In its raw form, it exists in brown color. By adding 1% sulfuric acid, it purifies by this process. This oil is using n special types of inks now a days.
Otesia Oil
Similar to China wood oil, it is using in particular types of inks such as metallic foil and soap wrapper inks. Other oils used include rosin oil, pitch varnish, synthetic oil, castor oil, fatty acid oil, and resin emulsion in printing ink production.
Solvent is a chemical that dissolves other chemicals to make a homogeneous mixture of all contents. Chemically, these solvents include acetones, ethers, esters, alcohols, ether alcohols, hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and nitro paraffin.
Ketones
Acetone is a leading solvent of the ketone group. In printing ink formulation, acetone is significant. It is highly flammable but fully dissolves in water, and has a boiling point of 56.1°C. It dissolves gums, binders, esters, and cellulose rapidly, drying ink very quickly.
Ether
In lacquers and ink products, ether is the second most frequently choice as solvent after acetone.
Esters
Prepared by organic acids, chemicals in this group include ethyl acetate, iso propyl acetate, ethyl lactate, amyl acetate, and butyl acetate.
Alcohols
Methyl and ethyl alcohol, also called wood alcohol, play a very important role in ink making. Mostly used in fountain pen ink and aniline inks, they bring smoothness, shine, and cleanliness to the ink.
Types of Printing Inks and Their Specific Raw Materials
Despite these chemicals, many other Raw Material for Printing Ink is used in ink production, such as chlorinated compounds, hydrocarbons, ethers, and binders.
