Officially week #1…yes, I know we had week “0” last week (LOL). While we haven’t learned a ton yet, we do know the Pac-12 should start getting ready for basketball because their football is BAD. Really Bad.

Wisconsin @ South Florida   (Friday Night Special)

By Wisconsin standards the Badgers had a disappointing year in 2018. Now they travel to Tampa to take on USF. After starting (7-0) last year the Bulls lost their last six games and were terrible against the run—uh oh can you say a heavy dose of Jonathan Taylor & Wisconsin offensive line! Last time I checked USF still had Charlie Strong as their coach? All I need to know. Close for a while but Wisky too strong as they continue to pound the undersized Bulls…Badgers-35 Bulls- 17

Middle Tennessee @ Mi##igan

2017 experts…”Mi##igan is back, they are going to be in the CFP playoffs and beat Ohio State…2018 experts…”Mi##igan is back, they are going to be in the CFP and beat Ohio State…This Year (2019)…”Mi##igan is back and they 100% will beat Ohio State this year” Well that game is three months away so we will see later. Miami of Ohio @ Iowa

Every year it seems like Kirk Ferentz and Iowa struggle against a non-conference opponent. This year they replace seven starters on defense and the Redskins (oops Red Hawks) bring in a talented offense. Miami plays both Iowa and Ohio State during their non-conference schedule- brutal. I have a feeling this game is going to be close for a long time but in the end the Hawkeyes pull it out…closer than the experts think Iowa- 30 Miami- 23

Notre Dame @ Louisville       (Monday Night Special)

The Irish travel to Louisville on Monday night to finish up the first weekend of football. And,  they come in (of course) with high expectations. Louisville is bad, their defense is absolutely terrible, and their coach only wants to ride motorcycles with co-eds. The Irish have Ian Book returning as one of the top QBs in the country. New Irish team…New expectations…A new Butch prediction…NAH, upset…Louisville- 31 Notre Dame- 27

Look for Alabama to open defensive of their National title…oops sorry the “Tide got ROLLED last year by Clemson for the title (LOL), but Bama rolls Duke (55-10)…also Oklahoma opens the season at home and blasts Houston…Sooners- 52 Cougars- 24

Upset Special of the Week    Northwestern @ Stanford

Yes, I know this game is at Stanford…but three points I would like to make. First, (See above) the Pac-12 is bad, 2^nd Stanford’s head coach always gets conservative in big games & 3^rd Northwestern has some pretty good skill people- Northwestern- 27 Stanford- 23

Game of the Day 1- Oregon vs Auburn (Dallas)

I was actually leaning Oregon in this game earlier in the week, great QB in Justin Herbert- experienced offensive line. Then I remembered Washington traveled to play Auburn last year in Atlanta and lost (Pac 12 vs SEC). Auburn’s defensive line also is really really good. The Ducks need to make a statement and let the college football world know they are back. This should be a good game but Auburn wins with a late FG…Tigers- 30 Ducks-27

REAL Game of the “Day” FAU @ Ohio State

Lane Kiffin brings his Owls into the ‘Shoe for the opening game. I love to make fun of Lane, but not sure I can this weekend- as I feel sorry for him.

The Buckeyes are looking to make s statement in the first game of the post Urban Meyer era. The defense wants to show that last year was not the norm and with new techniques they can play fast.

Justin Fields wants to prove to  EVERYONE he is the real deal and you know Day is going to want to be creative in his first game.

This one isn’t even close…Butch & Paul’s tailgate re-opens early and the Buckeyes take NO prisoners in this one. In the end Ohio State has too much…Buckeye’s- 60 FAU-17

Okay…Having a little fun but you wonder why no one watches the news anymore…yes I know I work at a TV station but we laugh at ourselves as well…but, since we try and stay current here at the Buzz–this “important” story had NBC Nationally doing a 4 minute piece this week on whether Bert & Ernie are gay?…REALLY?…BULLETIN NBC they are PUPPETS!! Nebraska @ Michigan

Obviously, the start of the season and the start of the Scott Frost era has NOT gone the way the Cornhusker faithful thought it would. Last weekends loss to Troy- ouch. After losing in the opener Mr. Khaki has the Wolverines playing better- but let’s be honest the competition has not been great. With games these next three weekends against (Nebraska-Northwestern & Maryland) the Wolverines should be (5-1) when the schedule gets tougher (Wisconsin-MSU & Penn State). Mi##igan’s defense sets the tone in this one as they win going away. Wolverines-38 Cornhuskers- 17   

TCU @ Texas

No time to be down on yourself if you are TCU after their hard-fought loss to the Buckeyes. Right back into a big-time game with Texas. The Longhorns are coming off a convincing win over USC (No biggie-the Trojans aren’t any good). The Longhorn faithful are getting a little restless with Tom Herman and a big win here could help take off the pressure. Honestly, the Buzz just thinks TCU…not Texas has the better athletes. That TCU win for the Buckeyes is going to look good come end of the season. TCU goes to Texas and gets it done…Horned Frogs-30 Longhorns- 24   

ND @ Wake Forest

Yes, I know we keep picking against the Irish…and somehow the little leprechauns keep winning. The Irish have more tradition than Wake…They have more 4- & 5-star players…. Don’t look now but the Wildcats are 3-0…NO I’m not talking about basketball I’m talking about football. RB Benny Snell (Westerville Grad) has been great and a 10-point underdog @ home? A night game and they aren’t even racing at Keeneland!…Hey I’m no dummy I’m married to a UK Wildcat…Kentucky- 35 Miss State- 31

Also look for Auburn to bounce back and crush Arkansas (Where is BERT?) by the way? Tigers- 48 Razorbacks-13…. Your Friday night special this week as the Nittany Lions travel to Illinois before their match-up with Ohio State…Penn State- 45 Illinois- 20

Wisconsin @ Iowa

Can I pick this final score as (6-3) with three FGs? I mean both offenses are boring. Both run the football and have (at best) mediocre quarterbacks. These two rivals usually just pound away with the home team winning. At (3-0) Iowa could position themselves as the leader to get to Indy and represent the SAD West division. Wisky wins and they are clearly in the driver’s seat but how much will anyone care if Wisconsin gets back to Indy with one loss? Which was a bad loss last week against BYU. Tough, hard nose game but I look for Wisconsin to bounce back in a close one…Wisconsin- 24 Iowa-21

Game of the West Coast…Stanford @ Oregon

Finally, back in a “big” game the Ducks come in (3-0) …although their wins are against Bowling Green- Portland State and San Jose State- not exactly a murderer’s row. Winner here trying to boost the national perception of the Pac-12. after Washington’s loss to Auburn in Week #1. The Ducks offense is rolling but Stanford will try and control the ball with Bryce Love. Like the Cardinal in this one close…Stanford-31 Oregon-30

REAL Game of the Day… Tulane @ OSU

OK…yes Bosa is gone for a while. It stings but time to move forward. With Urban being back on the sideline there should be a little extra juice in the ‘Shoe.

Tulane runs the triple-option so looks for it to take a little while to adjust to what the Green Wave is doing. Big game last week in DALLAS…HUGE game next week in State College. So, it seems natural that Ohio State would have a little let down with this game in between.

The offense is humming let’s be honest #2 in the nation in scoring

Ok…trying to make this sound dramatic but come on its Tulane!…The only prediction I’ll make this week- Butch & Paul’s Tailgate will be open by halftime

A good Monday afternoon to you from rainy CBUS….but don’t fret, all is good after our weekend in Texas!

That’s right…first real test of the season, “road game” (Okay it really wasn’t a road game when you have more than half the crowd) Top #15 team, a team with speed, and a QB getting his first real start…we pass with flying colors.

AND…speaking of flying colors…the Buzz going a sparkling (6-1) on the weekend. YES I know my only loss was the Vandy trying to upset ND…but you know the story there. We said OSU would win 45-23…and it ended 40-28…so not bad.

The GOOD

• This new QB can throw the ball (LOL)…11 TD’s, 1 INT on the year so far. And WOW he throws a nice ball
• Ryan Day…come on let’s be real here- do you really think he’s going to be around much longer in Columbus? But great job of play calling
• The Offense…Look this team can score. Dobbins & Weber on the ground and at least 6 WRS who can take it to the house—now let’s not get conservative once Urban is back
• BUCKEYE NATION…makes no difference where we play- you bring it
• Scoring offense…#2 in the nation

The BAD

• While the D-Line is DEEP, the loss of the best defensive player in the nation in Nick Bosa is going to hurt & my sources tell me this may be worse than we think- keep your fingers crossed
• DB’s…Guys you have to start judging the deep pass better- come on let’s get that fixed
• Outside of that not much to complain about- although we were down in the 2^nd half you could see we were still moving the ball so we were fine

What we learned this weekend

• (See last week)…The Florida schools still suck
• Looks like Scott Frost’s rebuilding job is gonna’ take longer than people think and Big Ten– get your act together
• LSU vs. OSU in one National Semi-Final game?—LOL—Long way to go

I find it funny all “the experts” -(Sarcasm)…all summer had OSU #1 in the Big Ten…but now its “not cool” to pick them to win the Big Ten because of what happened off the field…That’s COOL…as a matter of fact it’s AWESOME…as senior captain Parris Campbell said “This team has some anger built up”

Friday Night Special…

Colorado State @ Colorado

A shout out to the only Colorado grad/fan I know Randy Schoedinger…who celebrated a significant birthday this summer…and for that reason I am starting the season off by picking this game. The Rams of CSU couldn’t stop Hawaii last week and with tough road games coming up in the next two weeks they NEED this win badly. The Buffs have won the last three in this series and Colorado in the last couple years have started to rebound into a solid team. Their defense will be too tough in this one—take the Buffs—Colorado- 37 CSU-20

Appy State @ Penn State

It has been 11 years since Appy State shocked Mi##igan in the “Little House”—and you ask, “What significance does that have to do with this game?”—actually NOTHING (LOL)…I just like reminding Wolverine fans! Many “experts” are picking the Nittany Lions to win the Big Ten East—humm guess we will see later. Appy State is actually a solid football team, winning 30 games over the past three years. Penn State lost a lot last year not only on offense but eight starters on Defense. Closer than Vegas thinks…Penn State- 40 Appy State- 21

Texas @ Maryland

Last year in Austin Maryland pulled off the stunner as they lost two quarterbacks in this game. Maryland with their off-field problems is a mess right now. Texas Tommy…or should I say Tommy Strip Club? Okay the Buzz originally had this as my UPSET special of the week and if Texas loses here Austin will not be a happy place. Look for an offensive shoot out. In the end though Texas makes more plays on offense… Longhorns- 42 Maryland- 37

Washington @ Auburn

What an opening game in “Hot-Lanta”. Most people think if Washington loses here the Pac-12 might not have a team that can make the playoffs. Washington’s Jake Browning is as good as there is in the country, but he will be challenged by a tough Auburn defense. Washington will struggle running and it will be Browning having a big game if they are to win. Big game…Chris Peterson Washington’s coach always seems to have a trick play at the right time. Tight game, Huskies will be ready… Washington- 30 Auburn- 27

The Buzz also likes….usually in this area we pick the blowouts but with so many teams playing teams they shouldn’t be playing, well there will be many…Couple games to watch UC @ UCLA in Chip Kelly debut…at least Fickell gets to coach in THE Rose Bowl but take the Bruins- 45 UC- 27….Oklahoma without Baker Mayfield rolls Florida Atlantic (Who still has Lane Kiffin so that will be fun to watch)—Oklahoma- 48 FAU- 20

WVU @ Tennessee

Everyone is on the WVU bandwagon, and more importantly on Will Grier for the Heisman. This might be the most talented WVU team since…wait for it…Rich Rod! I do think WVU is going to be good—but they have been reading all the hype all summer. A little over confident? I like the Vols…Tennessee- 35 Mounties- 28

LMAO…Okay you guys got me. I know you have been waiting on this pick since all week. You know how much I LOVE both teams (LMAO). After a 4-year hiatus these teams meet again. Pressure on Jim Harbaugh? Can’t beat Ohio State, Can’t beat his little sister (MSU) and if he loses to ND?—OUCH. Brian Kelly who built his reputation on spread offense and high scoring has a team that can’t score and plays tough defense.

Real Game of the Day

Oregon State @ Ohio State

At 12N…all Distractions will be gone…off field problems gone…time to play some football.

Pent up frustration? You bet…New QB? Yep…Young team?…Here’s one for you. Ohio State released their 2-deep on defense and they have ZERO…that’s right ZERO Seniors. This is a young BUT talented defense especially the D-line.

Offensively, the bar has been set (in my opinion) a little high for Haskins…I mean former QB Stanley Jackson is talking Heisman—RELAX STAN. We don’t need that type of pressure.

Ryan Day (without Urban and JT Barrett)—lets open up the offense. We have weapons AND speed everywhere. NO MORE QB runs…well unless Tate Martell is in the game. Look for a ton of young players to step up, again this team is young but…well it’s gonna be a fun year.

GREAT to have Football back…The Buzz is excited for what it to come this season…lets buckle in and enjoy my sources tell me you are going to like this team.

In the end Ohio State gets all their frustration out on the Beavers…

Not a ton of big games this weekend (until we get into the conference full force) but there are some of interest so here we go…

Air Force @ Michigan

Just like Ohio State on Saturday, Mi##igan will also face a triple option running team in Air Force. While that type of offense is hard to adjust to, Mi##igan’s run defense is their strength. The Wolverines are still a little upset, and I believe have used as motivation, the fact that everyone said they were over rated at the start of the season. You know from past Buzz’s some of my cousins attended the Air Force Academy and I love the Falcons toughness- but sorry guys Mi##igan has too much…Wolverines- 42 Falcons- 17

ND @ Boston College

The battle of two big Catholic schools takes place in Chestnut Hill. Did you know that Chestnut Hill was developed by the same person who developed central park in New York?—Fredrick Olmsted…. See the Buzz not only gives you great sports analysis but we educate you as well! Both teams enter (1-1) and both teams will be fired up to play in this traditional battle. Again the odds makers say Irish big- but the Buzz has a sneaky feeling that the Eagles play well…Boston College- 27 ND- 24

Tennessee @ Florida

You remember this game used to be played at a neutral site (Jacksonville) but it will be played @ Florida this weekend. The Gators, after being crushed by Mi##igan, had last week’s game cancelled due to the Hurricane. I watched Tennessee against Georgia Tech on opening night and honestly they should have lost. BOTH…and yes I said BOTH offenses are bad. This shapes up to be a low scoring defensive affair. I look for Florida to come up with a late defensive play to be the difference- Gators- 18 Tennessee-14

Oklahoma… is this the year that they don’t have their normal bad game or two and run the table?…we won’t know for a few weeks but they will crush Tulane…(Oklahoma- 50 Tulane- 13)…also look for Alabama and their complaining head coach Nick Saban to blast Colorado State- (Bama- 47 Colorado State-10)

Upset Special of the Day…

That’s right…Kentucky travels to over South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks. Both teams unbeaten (2-0) but UK has looked better. CATS go on the road for this one Kentucky- 24 South Carolina- 21

Clemson @ Louisville

Okay it should be a fun night in the city know for the Kentucky Derby since there are some thoroughbreds in this one as well.

Louisville has the current Heisman winner in Jackson. They owe Clemson one for last year loss and this game is at home. The Cardinals offense has been rolling and with a month of easy games coming up, a win here and they take control of the ACC

Yes, we know Clemson is the defending National Champions– and I actually think their defense has improved from a year ago. Clemson has recruited well and like Ohio State they have players waiting to get in the line-up.

I know the experts are leaning Louisville…but I believe Clemson is really good…I’m taking the Tigers. Clemson- 38 Louisville- 21

Real Game of the Day  (Army @ Ohio State)

Like Air Force earlier I have nothing but RESPECT for Army. What they do OUTSIDE of a football game cannot be appreciated more by the Buzz.

But, this game is NOT about Army—this is about Ohio State fixing things and getting things right. The score on Saturday makes NO difference. With a relatively soft schedule for the next month of games it is time for the Buckeyes to get back the swagger and get on a roll.

It starts one game at a time.  Don’t worry about moving up in the polls right now just get better.

It is almost that time…the college football season is upon us…the Buzz is back. We are primed and ready for what I believe will be an awesome season of college football.

Heading over with my Buckeye Booster group this evening to watch the final scrimmage (In the ‘Shoe) before Urban and the boys turn their attention towards Indiana one week from tonight in Bloomington.

So here we are…on the cusp of Meyer’s 6th season as head coach.

I know, I know, we lost nine players in the first couple rounds of the NFL draft- but with 16 starters returning the cupboard is NOT BARE—this team, with a new look offense and possibly the best defensive line in the country is ready once again to make a run @ the CFP Playoffs and eliminate the terrible taste from a year ago in the Fiesta Bowl.

Pre-Season “Bits”

This year’s slogan from the team and Urban is “OWN IT”—like in the past when he has used “The Grind” or “The Chase”—it’s time to stop pointing fingers, blaming others and OWN everything you do in life…that’s actually a good message for all of us.

Offense Will Improve…Yes many pointed fingers @ JT Barrett at the end of the season last year and especially against Clemson, but come on. JT has been solid and give me a 5th year senior who understands HOW to win big games and I’ll take that every time. Let’s also be honest the offense needed a jolt—and with Kevin Wilson & Ryan Day now in charge—look for a return to the output from the 2014-2015 season.

Defensive Line…Look for seven/eight maybe nine players to see significant playing time as D-Line coach Larry Johnson feels this is the best and deepest line he has ever coached. They will pressure the QB more than they have in the past.

So, Who’s Needs to Improve?…the Buzz believes OSU must improve in two areas. Both on the offensive side of the ball. O-Line has got to get better and according to Meyer they have. And at receiver. We have been hearing for some time that it is time for this unit to step up—we shall see.

Yes, the OFFICIAL polls were released on Tuesday (No I’m not talking about Political polls)…and the Buckeyes being ranked sixth should come as no surprise. Maryland @ Mi##igan

We told you before…we need Mi##igan to keep winning. Next week is their BIG test as they travel to Iowa City for a night game against the Hawkeyes. This one however is in Ann Arbor. When Maryland visited two years ago and won at the big house- Brady Hoke, remember him?…was on his way out the door. Different story in 2016. Wolverines get to (9-0) and thump the Terps. Navy @ Notre Dame

For many years the Irish dominated this series winning I think (40 out of 41) but not anymore. The Irish will need a strong finish just to become Bowl eligible…how funny does that sound? You know Navy and the triple-option is tough to defend when you have good defenders…and that’s not a description for the Notre Dame defense. This game is being played in Jacksonville…Take the Midshipmen…Navy- 35 Notre Dame- 27

Florida @ Arkansas

Here’s a stat for you. The Gators gave up 38 points to Tennessee in their only loss this season. In their six wins they have given up 44 points combined! They Gators have the inside track to represent the SEC East in Atlanta. On the road in Fayetteville you say…Going against “Bert” you say…you know we love to cheer against the Razorbacks…Gators- 23 Arkansas- 20

No, we are not picking an upset here…but the Bears can score points so if they get into a shoot-out who knows. It’s worth watching and the Buckeyes could benefit…Huskies- 48 Bears- 40

The Buzz also likes WVU as the roll the hapless Kansas Jayhawks…(when does basketball season start in Lawrence?…Mountaineers- 47 Jayhawks- 17…Looks for Washington State to keep rolling when Arizona comes to town… Cougars- 43 Wildcats- 27

Honestly can’t understand this line as I actually think Kentucky is the BETTER team. Playing at home, a chance to get to (5-2) in the conference…Take the Wildcats..Kentucky- 31 Georgia-27.

Alabama @ LSU

I was going to say…home game in Death Valley @ Night…The Mad Hatter…but check that. No Mad Hatter give me Ed Orgeron?…WHO??? BUT, since Ed took over LSU has opened up the playbook and have rolled to three straight wins. Last year Leonard Fournette was the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy and the ‘Bama defense held him to 31 yards!—He will want revenge. Alabama on the other hand has just cruised along week after week and honestly even if they lose the Buzz feels they would remain in the Top 4. Hoping for a good one…although I won’t be watching. Bama- 30 LSU- 23

I know it sounds like a broken record…but once again the Buckeyes are in PRIME TIME. It marks the 4^th time. Throw in the fact this is the 3^rd Top-10 team the Buckeyes have faced this season….ABC/ESPN just loves it. NOW you see why Ohio State has NOTHING to worry about if they run the table.

Big weekend for Week #9…. Will it produce some upsets that benefit the Buckeyes?

Mi##igan @ Michigan State

Go WOLVERINES!…That’s right. IF Mi##igan loses before our game and then we defeat them they will have two conference losses. And POTENTIALLY if Penn State runs the table we would finish tied in the East with PSU with one conference loss. The tie-breaker when there are only two teams is head-to-head. HOWEVER if Mi##igan remains unbeaten and we beat them on 11/26–and it’s a (3-way tie)– it goes to best record and the Buckeyes are off to Indy. Add in the fact that Sparty just sucks this year. Mi##igan remembers the fluke punt last year that cost them the game- Mi##igan- 48 Michigan State- 17

Nebraska @ Wisconsin

A very interesting game for control of the WEST division in the BT. Since both of these teams (Nebraska next week) are on OSU’s schedule—whoever finishes higher makes no difference. Four Big Ten teams now reside in the Top-10—BUT, we will start to beat up each other so that will be tough to continue. All I will say is since Nebraska has not lost yet the only way the Badgers remain in the Top-10 is to not lose again. We are going to find out what Nebraska is made of this week…Buzz still likes the Badgers in a close one…Wisconsin- 21 Nebraska-17

Miami @ Notre Dame

LMAO…Two programs that have ZERO relevance anymore in college football. Hurricanes vs. Fighting Irish…It used to be “Convicts vs. Catholics”…yes I’m dating myself. Great weather in South Bend, so the Floridians will not have any trouble with the cold. I think a win should put Notre Dame in the mix for the Final 4?…Buzz like Miami …Miami- 34 ND- 24

If the two upsets mentioned above don’t happen– this one also has potential. Saturday night, on the road, revenge for the Seminoles. Throw in the fact that Clemson has been up and down this year including a “lucky” win last week at home against NC State. Is FSU ready for the upset which could change next week’s rankings?…I think so…FSU- 35 Tigers- 27

Northwestern @ Ohio State

Bounce back?…Re-Focus?…

Young team loses for the first time and realizes it’s not that easy to win every game. You think the coaches had everyone’s attention this week? It is time for the leaders of this team to step up.

REMEMBER…as Urban said after the game… “EVERYTHING- EVERY GOAL is still alive”. Forget last Saturday and move on.

After struggling early in the season Northwestern has bounced back to win three Big Ten games in a row. Their offense has been clicking. BUT remember, you can’t really pin the loss last week on OSU’s defense. Take away the last drive of the first half for PSU and the defense played well enough to win.

Back home in the ‘Shoe…Weather forecast is for unseasonably warm and in the mid-70’s.
