EVERETT, WASH. – The Port of Everett partnered with Sound Experience and Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County to provide a full day of hands-on career exploration for 45 elementary school-aged students that culminated in an afternoon sailing aboard historic tall ship, Adventuress, on Friday, Aug. 7.

The innovative partnership between nonprofit Sound Experience, the Port of Everett and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County gave elementary-aged students the opportunity to explore the region’s maritime industry, meet professionals working in the field and gain firsthand experience aboard the 133-foot National Historic Landmark schooner, Adventuress.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County is proud to announce Lake Stevens residents Rhonda and Rich Mietzneras chairs of the 2026 Reach for the Stars Grand Gala.

For more than two decades, Rhonda and Rich have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to creating opportunities for young people in their community. Their involvement with the Lake Stevens Boys & Girls Club began in 2002, driven by a shared desire to give back and help create a safe, welcoming and fun environment where local kids could learn, grow and develop critical life skills. Rhonda deepened that commitment in 2007 when she joined the Club’s Board of Directors.

For Rich, the Boys & Girls Club mission has always been deeply personal. Growing up as a “Club kid” in Seattle, he spent much of his youth in his neighborhood Club’s gymnasium. That firsthand experience inspired him to join the steering committee charged with transforming the former Lake Stevens Senior Center into a permanent Boys & Girls Club.

At the committee’s very first meeting, Rich recognized that the proposed plans were missing something essential: a gymnasium. He immediately partnered with a designer friend to create a gym layout and add it to the official site plan before the committee’s next meeting. The group embraced the vision, moving forward with the remodel of the Senior Center while setting aside funding for the gymnasium as Phase II of the project.

Years later, Rhonda and Rich stepped forward once again, helping design the Dan Pratt Memorial Teen Center and continuing their work to ensure Lake Stevens youth have spaces designed specifically for them.

Their leadership, creativity and willingness to take action have helped shape the Lake Stevens Club into the important community resource it is today.

“We have always found tremendous joy in being deeply connected to our community and supporting its young people,” Rhonda and Rich said. “We are honored to chair the 2026 Grand Gala and help create even more opportunities for Club kids throughout Snohomish County.”

As Grand Gala chairs, Rhonda and Rich will help bring together community leaders, businesses and supporters for an unforgettable evening benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County.

The 2026 Reach for the Stars Grand Gala will be held Saturday, October 17, at Tulalip Resort Casino. Guests will enjoy an inspiring evening featuring dinner, an exciting auction and powerful stories of the impact Boys & Girls Clubs make in the lives of local youth.

CHELAN — The Lake Chelan Valley Boys & Girls Club’s second annual UW/WSU Celebrity Golf Tournament raised a record amount of support for youth programs during an event held June 25 at Bear Mountain Ranch Golf Course.

The tournament brought together former University of Washington and Washington State University athletes, community members, local businesses and volunteers for a four-person scramble competition benefiting the Boys & Girls Club.

Proceeds from the event will provide scholarships for children and families who otherwise could not afford Boys & Girls Club memberships, summer camps, after-school programs, youth sports, transportation and enrichment opportunities.

“This tournament demonstrates what can happen when a community comes together for a common purpose,” said Angela Collins, unit director of the Lake Chelan Valley Boys & Girls Club. “Whether participants wore purple or crimson didn’t matter. Everyone was here to invest in the future of our local kids.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County invites community members, donors, local leaders, families and alumni to join a ceremonial demolition of the former Edmonds Boys & Girls Club building from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, June 18 at 310 6th Ave. N. in Edmonds.

The gathering will take place outside the Club building, rain or shine, and will mark the conclusion of an important chapter in the Edmonds Club’s history while celebrating the beginning of a new facility designed to serve youth and families for generations to come, the club said in a news release.

“Honoring the past and celebrating the future is what this moment is all about,” said Marci Volmer, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County. “The former Club building holds generations of memories for Edmonds families. Now, because of the vision and generosity of this community, we are taking a major step toward building what’s next for local youth.”

Graduation season has arrived, and more than 100 seniors across the Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County are preparing to take the next step toward their futures. Among them is Samuel Evans of the Cascade Boys & Girls Club.

Sam has grown up in our Club community. He started as Club kid, became a counselor-in-training, participated in Teen Camp, and now serves as one of the Club’s Youth Development Professionals on staff.

The moment Sam walks into the Club, kids rush to greet him with high fives, fist bumps, questions about his day, and invitations to play in the gym. His positive energy and genuine connections make him someone kids naturally look up to and love being around.

Sam is the kind of staff member who always jumps in alongside the kids — whether it’s dancing during “Just Dance” parties, playing UNO, running around during tag in the gym, or simply joining whatever activity the kids are excited about. He creates an environment where every child feels seen, included, and valued.

When Sam isn’t working at the Club, you can usually find him on the track field. One thing everyone knows about Sam—he’s fast! Whether he’s racing down the track or sprinting across the gym during a game of tag, Sam brings the same energy, passion, and heart to everything he does. As he prepares for graduation from Cascade High School, the Club staff say they are excited to see what comes next for Sam and confident he will continue making a positive impact in the future.

According to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, 92% of Club youth are expected to graduate from high school, and 69% of juniors and seniors participate in career exploration programs that help prepare them for successful futures.

We are incredibly proud of the Class of 2026 across all our Clubs. We are also deeply grateful to everyone who helps make their success possible.

For thousands of young athletes across our Clubs, sports are about much more than wins and losses. They are about learning teamwork, building confidence, developing leadership skills, and creating lasting memories. At the center of these experiences are the dedicated volunteer coaches of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County.

Each year, more than 1,600 volunteer coaches make it possible for over 1,100 sports teams to participate in athletics across our Clubs. These coaches donate countless hours mentoring young athletes, teaching the fundamentals of the game, and helping youth grow both on and off the field.

While every volunteer coach across our organization plays an important role, Coach Josh Peterson is one example of the dedication and spirit of service that makes our athletic programs so meaningful.

Coach Peterson has coached flag football at the Alderwood Boys & Girls Club for the past decade. He first began coaching when his oldest son, Noah — now a high school senior — was young. Alongside Noah, his younger son Jordan also grew up participating in Club sports. What started as a way to support his own children quickly became something much bigger, as Coach Peterson went on to mentor athletes of all ages, from youth teams through high school players.

The Peterson family’s commitment to the Club continues today, with both Noah and Jordan now serving as referees for Club sports programs and giving back to the same community that helped shape them.

Every season, there is a waiting list for Coach Peterson’s team — a reflection of the positive impact he has on players and families alike. His philosophy is simple:

“You cannot make the game about you; it is always about the kids.”

A veteran of the United States Navy, Coach Peterson brings discipline and consistency to every practice, and abides by the military adage, “Early is on time, and on time is late”. He always arrives an hour early to the field to prepare for his players. More importantly, he understands that every child comes to the field carrying different experiences and challenges.

“You don’t always know where kids are coming from, and the challenges they face off the field. I always want to be that person they can look up to and count on. By the end of every season, they’re my kids too.”

The impact of volunteers like Coach Peterson, combined with the support of our sports sponsors and generous community of donors, helps ensure youth throughout all our Clubs have access to affordable sports opportunities, equipment, and scholarships.

As we continue to grow our sports programming, volunteer coaches remain at the heart of every season — shaping not only athletes, but future leaders in the community.

Summer camp season is quickly approaching, and we are gearing up to welcome thousands of youth across our 29 Club sites throughout Snohomish County and beyond for a season full of fun, learning, and adventure. Campers will enjoy exciting theme-based weeks, engaging field trips, arts & crafts, STEM activities, outdoor play, and so much more.

Summer’s more relaxed routines can be refreshing, but for some children, the longer and less structured days can feel overwhelming. In 2020, thanks to the generous philanthropic support of our community partners, we added Behavioral Support Specialists to the Boys & Girls Club of Snohomish County team. These specialists work alongside youth and Club staff to provide guidance, training, consistency, and care for the young people who need it most. In recent years, the need for these services has continued to grow — especially during the summer months, when changes in routine can be particularly challenging for many children and families.

This summer, with the guidance and support of our Behavior Specialists, we are excited to integrate a Sensory Camp program for select youth at our Club locations in Everett, Lake Stevens, and Marysville. Specifically designed to create a calm and supportive environment, this camp program will help youth with sensory and emotional needs feel safe, understood, and empowered to thrive.

Participation in Sensory Camp doesn’t replace the joy and energy of our traditional summer camp, it enhances it.

Sensory Camp is an added layer of support within the traditional summer camp experience to help ensure that every child, including those who struggle with the less structured days of summer, can fully participate, connect, and thrive. With the small group settings and the guidance and support from specially trained staff, youth will build skills in managing big feelings, developing coping strategies, and strengthening friendships. Just as importantly, they’ll gain confidence they can carry back into their daily activities and beyond.

We are grateful for the strong community support that helps enable us to meet kids where they are—especially during the moments they need us most.
