やった！The Final Project Is Done!

Finally, after months of learning essential scripting language programming from Mr Bahana, and weeks of “careful” group work planning, my team (Jason & Alex) and I showed Mr Bahana our final (not really) draft of the website for Pusaka Beruang Batik.

The Website is basically a simple e commerce website that focuses on selling the ever so wonderful Pusaka Beruang Batik Lasem. Mr Bahana gave us the assignment after the mid term exam, and appointed groups for the class. My group did pretty okay because i had my boss (Jason) running the “important” php programming while i focused on visual appearance as well as visual data representations from the mysql database (too technical ey?). Our last guy (Alex) helped out with structuring the mysql database, content management, and he did the cool video up top too

There are some screenshots that I want to post, but for some reason wordpress is not letting me upload files correctly?. Anyway, the website is split into 3 parts, a dynamic store which contains the php files, a static “culture” page that I cut up from the long introductions the designer wrote in the initial web “template” for our group, and an admin page for the admin to manage the store items, manage transactions, as well as view customer or username datas. Quite the undertaking achievement if you ask me

Finally, a scripting language assignment done.

Earlier this week during the lab session on Monday, my teaching assistant Ieuan, assigned a homework to the class where we are tasked to improve our form helper CodeIgniter exercise to be able to work in conjunction with a database. He did not state specifics, but I think he wants us to make the form validate with data stored in a database.

So connecting the CI application with the database is not that hard, all you need to do is tweak the autoload file to load the database library, then state the database credentials in the database.php file, create a model containing the query for the database, and then load them puppies to the viewer file. Oh, did I mention create a FUNCTIONAL model for the queries?

So I created some queries but I followed the class example, and the method to load it to the viewer is by using an associated array for each object like “$object->emailAddress”, so i tweaked the whole setup in order for the code to run without a hitch, but I dont know if that is how Ieuan wants me to do it.

But, what is done is done. The task is finished, effectively, just like my favorite catchphrase when I describe myself to potential employers:

In order to improve, one must be able to take new risk, take deep plunges, and venture out into unknown territories.

That was an excerpt that I quoted from myself a couple of minutes ago. But sometimes, some of the things I say makes sense, you cant outgrow your shell if you just keep stagnant. Therefore, in order for me to grow my web development empire, I created Kepoinc , my newest web development brand, a brand which is an extension of Keanu, or just a one of my silly mad side projects (but silly side projects have proved to grow into insanely big unicorns). But before I do anymore tweaking, i must first finish Ieuan’s scripting language assignment…

Scripting Language Homework – Ieuan’s chalange

Today marks the checkpoint session of the scripting language lab sessions. Throughout the past month my teaching assistant Ieuan has been teaching me and my class the basics of using the ever popular CodeIgniter php framework. As you may now, I’ve written my past major php project in pure php, and I must say it is quite an eye opening (& watering) experience. However, using CodeIgniter has its pros and cons.

CodeIgniter is relatively straightforward once you know what you are doing, but there is quite the learning curve for you to reach that “knowing what you are doing” level. Codeigniter’s numerous folders containing controller files, views for the frontend, as well as other mumbo jumbo that I’ve never even put my hands on (but seems rather important). The combination of those herculean number of folders is what makes code igniter what it is, on the plus side, it makes collaboration a tat bit easier if you are working in a small or large team of programmers.

Today, Ieuan finally wants to see what we can do on our own with codeIgniter. He tasked us to improve an exercise that we worked on in class earlier today concerning “forms and form handling”, but to expand it and incorporate a database functionality. He did not specify what, but he mentioned “:connecting”, so I will do my best and try to make it seem rather adequate for Ieuan’s standard…

Batik Lasem Ber(uang)(?)- A Scripting Language project

Collaboration between numerous different fields of study or work is not a new phenomena. As such, I’ve learnt that in a previous course called project hatchery, where 5 complete strangers with different study majors collaborate on a project to solve certain problems. Of course, I passed the course and so did my group mates. However, this is not project hatchery, yet it is scripting language related.

In the wonderful world of web design, designers often work together with programmers to produce beautiful web sites, with powerful web programming running in the background, this is not always the case. Sometimes the programmer lacks tenacity in coding (like I did a couple of months ago), or in this case… the web front end is just poorly made.

My lecturer Mister Bahana divided my class into groups and assigned us some wonderful html front-end designed by some art or Information systems student, to produce an “e-commerce” themed website for Batik Lasem. the front-end is probably from another multimedia systems course where the main focus is html. Luckily, my group has been assigned an html design with beautiful and minimalist design cues (just what the doctor ordered).

My group consists of Jason, Alex, and myself, all from the same class and all computer scientists (to be..). We’ve not divided any group work yet because the lecturer has not yet invited us to a dropbox folder that contains the said html assets for use. In future posts, expect updates on the progress of redesigning the UI (if any) and addition of some php server side scripting programming to turn a boring html file that redirects pages, into a startup unicorn worthy of fighting toe-to-toe with the likes of tokopedia and bukalapak .

Binus Elaborated Events (B.E.E)

BEE is an early prototype of what an event CMS web application would look like of Keanu and his mates get together and just code horribly. What started as a family and student friendly Sindhen clone for Binus International campus events, ended in a wonderful group set of incoherently written lines of code that manages to execute properly into a web based application for adding, viewing, and managing Non academic Binus events.

Originally built to fulfill a software
engineering assignment tasked by the
legendary Satrio Pradono , BEE has grown into a green and yellow Chimera (totally unrelated to Bina Nusantara colors purple) thanks to the assistance of one of our designer friend who blatantly thought that green and yellow would be a good choice for a Binus International Web App. Since we were too stressed to meet a UI presentation deadline, we didn’t bother with it anyway and just started coding the webApp.

To meet with “industry standards”, BEE is written in php, a popular server side programming language that powers a large number of websites such as facebook and the campus newbinusmaya website. None of the members in the group have code in php let alone a program that is as big as this. Fortunately, thanks to the tenacity of us motivating each other, we managed to pull off this herculean task that nearly cost us our sanity…
